Short Cuts: The Final Cut Short Cuts is ten years old. After 21 editions we’ve decided it’s time to bring the curtain down on Short Cuts to make way for new exciting events in our Live Lab programme. However we couldn’t say goodbye without giving it a good send off so, to celebrate ten glorious years, some previous Short Cuts writers have been invited back to present extracts of brand new plays they’re developing. Writers include Alison Carr (The Girls From Poppyfield Close), Paddy Campbell (Girls on the Verge – Home Help) and Chloe Daykin. And of course, we’re also putting out one last call for brilliant new short plays and the best four pieces will be read on the night. The rules are simple: the play must be no more than 10 minutes in length to be performed by a maximum of four actors. The theme is COUP DE THEATRE so be daring, be tangential and above all, surprise us!

Lead singer Emma Beaton has an intimate style but with startling power. Matthew Arcara is a 2006 Winfield National Flatpicking Guitar Champion; Wesley Corbett is a Fleck-inflected banjoist with killer chops; and Jacob Jolliff on mandolin creates the appropriate rhythm groove and adds distinct, lyrical fills. The Caffs Summer Bash Mention The Caffreys to any discerning north east music lover, and it’s likely they’ll need no introduction. This is a band that has earned a formidable reputation based on heartfelt and uplifting original songs, incredible musicianship, dynamic live performances and – at the core of The Caffreys sound - astonishing close harmonies unique to three brothers who have, for most of their lives, sang as one. The Caffreys create a sound which is variously rocky, rootsy, folky... and always engaging.

A Bush Theatre production In association with Live Theatre By Lee Mattinson Directed by Madani Younis Design by Leslie Travers Dramaturg Ché Walker Sound Design Tom Gibbons Lighting Design Tim Mascall Costume Supervisor Amy Cook

LOCATION: Main Theatre

“Some women long their whole lives to be asked that, to be asked how they are, if just by a complete stranger” Butlins Skegness, Chalet Number 12, where the Walker women have been holidaying since 1961. This year it’s Nana Barbara’s seventieth and everyone’s airing their dirty laundry. Loretta’s had too many camp cocktails, Jolene’s fallen tits over teeth for a Redcoat and Abigail’s harbouring more than knickers and hairspray in her suitcase. A shockingly funny journey through five decades of birthdays, weddings and hen dos, which asks can we ever really cut the apron string that ties us to our parents? Chalet Lines was performed for the first time in March 2010 as a script-in-hand performance at Live Theatre as part of the Different Stages New Writing Festival. When the play returned to the stage in December 2010 audiences said “it says important things about women... and above all else it’s flipping hilarious!!!”

Support Live: Making plays for 40 years Next year Live Theatre will celebrate its 40th birthday. Over those 40 years the company has touched many thousands of lives with plays and projects at the theatre and beyond. The roll call of playwrights and actors who have learnt their craft at Live Theatre’s quayside theatre is lengthy. In the 1970s CP Taylor, arguably Live Theatre’s first writer in residence, encouraged Tom Hadaway to write for the stage. Sid Chaplin was joined by Alan Plater who in his turn brought Sid’s son Michael into the company; initially to help adapt some of his Dad’s short stories. Phil Woods, Steve Chambers and Karin Young followed in the 80s, with Lee Hall and recent Bafta winner Peter Straughan taking their respective turns as writer in residence during the late 1990s. The new decade brought the sadly missed Julia Darling to Live Theatre when she worked alongside another poet turned playwright Sean O’Brien …and the work continues.

Corporate Partners Membership of the Corporate Partners Scheme allows companies to support all aspects of Live Theatre’s work both at the Theatre and in the community. Current Corporate Partners are: Level 2

Level 1

This year will see premieres of two plays written by graduates of the theatre’s Introduction to Playwriting Course; Geordie Sinatra by Fiona Evans and Chalet Lines by Lee Mattinson. Each year the company spends over £200,000 on its development work with emerging writers, money which is becoming increasingly difficult to find. In the autumn we will be launching a new supporters’ scheme which we hope, with your help, will make sure writers continue to find a home at Live Theatre for the next 40 years. We hope you can help.
