IT IS A HUGE JOY TO BE ABLE TO FINALLY ANNOUNCE OUR FIRST SEASON AS JOINT CHIEF EXECUTIVES AT LIVE THEATRE. THERE IS SO MUCH THAT NEEDS TO BE SAID, SO MANY WHO NEED TO BE HEARD. THERE COULD BE NO MORE URGENT TIME TO COME TOGETHER, PHYSICALLY AND OTHERWISE, TO REINSTATE OUR SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND FIGHT AGAINST THE ISOLATION TOO MANY HAVE FACED. People have had a lot to deal with, so our response with this season is to go the other way. To give more. More for our audiences, more for our artists and more for the children and young people who will shape our future. This is not a time to hold back or keep quiet. Everyone deserves a gift, and ours to you is a place where everyone counts and anything is possible.

Each show has been selected with the express purpose of rewarding the audience. To offer a feast for the senses, the mind, the emotions. We open with a joyous burst of energy with We Are The Best! This dryly comic slice of anarchy about three school kids who find their voice in the world of punk and politics of 1980s Sweden began life as a smash hit film. Now, penned for the stage by rising star Rebecca Glendenning, it will be a live experience you will not want to miss. We are an unashamedly political theatre and our mini-festival of radical ideas Make Hope Possible explores how we can reshape society to be better, kinder and brighter.

the audience. Three Acts of Love is a brand-new musical odyssey in which three leading playwrights, Laura Lindow, Vici WrefordSinnott and Naomi Obeng explore and explode this very deepest of human emotions, in a show of passion and politics told through glorious drama and song. November marks the arrival of a truly major premiere. After five years in Durham prison, Ric Renton wrote a play One Off about his experiences, and how he was saved by creativity. The result is a jaw-dropping piece of new writing performed with Ric himself in the cast. This is a voice that needs to be heard.

Groundbreaking artist Selina Thompson will be in residence alongside performances by local legends The Lawnmowers, readings of society-bending manifestos, a panel talk with North of Tyne Mayor, Jamie Driscoll and some very special guests.

This Christmas we are very excited to begin producing work on our stages for children. Wintry Tales builds on the exceptional work of our Live Tales creative writing programme to put young people at the heart of the creative process. Bring your little ones along for a show that delights and excites with the richness of the best new writing.

Our first in-house production in the autumn is a true gesture of love for

We are proud to be based in the North East, one of the most exciting places for

the creation of new theatre in the UK. We are a home for writers and companies and will constantly be developing talent through new playwrighting courses, festivals for emerging and established talent as well as a new year-round programme of recovery to help alleviate the strains and challenges of recent years. We are also thrilled to be welcoming some truly inspiring visiting theatre from our old friends Paines Plough through to our new friends Forced Entertainment with their Live Theatre debut! Next year we hit the big 5-0. That is half a decade of championing the new, the unheard, the unique spirit of our region. We believe that every voice must be heard, that creativity is within each one of us, and that authentic, live experiences offer an immediacy and sense of empathy that can only make our society happier and kinder. There is still so much to be done, so many voices to discover, so many evenings to be shared. In the meantime, here’s to a proper Live night out! Jack McNamara and Jacqui Kell

A LIVE THEATRE production Stockholm 1982. Three friends decide to change the world. Or at least change their world. And their hair. Bobo doesn’t quite fit in. Luckily, neither does her friend Klara. With classmates, parents and teachers that oppress them on all sides, the two misfits decide to start a band. Joined by the shiest pupil in school, Hedwig, they begin to play. They don’t know how to play but that doesn’t matter. They are doing it. And they are the best! Lukas Moodysson’s cult film, based on his wife Coco’s acclaimed comic book, was an international sensation. Rewritten by upcoming talent Rebecca Glendenning We are the Best! is a glorious punk story for here and now. Charged with the anarchic spirit of the North East, this is a high energy ensemble comedy about finding your voice, the power of friendship and the joy of sticking two fingers up at a society that tries to define you. Note: This production is made for adults but also offers a rare opportunity to cross generations. A WAY HOME

Written by CHRISTINA CASTLING / Directed by JONLUKE MCKIE ‘ This house isn’t unfit for habitation. We’re inhabiting it. It’s been inhabited for 100 years!’ It’s 1951 and a third of County Durham’s villages have been classified as ‘D’. No longer deemed worthy of investment, they’re expected to die quietly. But they refuse to go without a fight. A Way Home is a new play rooted in the stories and memories of the people who called those D villages

home. A county wide fight lasting over 25 years becomes a 12 month journey at Bet’s kitchen table as she and her family grapple with what identity, loss and belonging really look like. With humour, tenderness and not a small amount of grit, A Way Home tells a story just as relevant today as it was 71 years ago. It's fighting to be heard when no one’s listening, of grappling to hold onto the past and of finding a place to belong.

A RICH SEAM Passions run high and memories do

not fade on the subject of County Durham’s Category D villages – a panel discussion on the facts and fictionalisation of their story.

VAGABAND MUSIC, SONG AND POETRY IN A RARE AND INTIMATE EVENING ABOUT A LEGENDARY NORTH EAST OUTCAST

In 1803, at the age of 70, after busking in pubs on the Quayside, Jamie Allen crossed the river, stole a horse and was sentenced to death. It was the last of many crimes.

The North East’s truly legendary poet Tom Pickard collaborates with acclaimed musician Ben Murray (War Horse) on a poetic and musical evening celebrating the life of the musician-outlaw and border piper Jamie Allan, based on Pickard’s own The Ballad of Jamie Allan, finalist of the National Book Critics Circle Awards. Featuring live original music infused with the spirit of the region, plus guest musicians, this unique collaboration of poetry and song is directed by Anthony Biggs from the Playground Theatre.

LOVE ME Written and performed by AMY TRIGG Directed by CHARLOTTE BENNETT

For a long time I didn’t know how it’d work. Or what I’d be able to feel. People would ask me if I could have sex and I’d feign shock and act wildly offended whilst secretly wanting to grab them by the shoulders and be like 'I don’t know, Janet!' Juno was born with spina bifida and is now clumsily navigating her twenties amidst street healers, love, loneliness – and the feeling of being an unfinished project. Winner of The Women’s Prize for Playwriting 2020, Amy Trigg’s remarkable debut play Reasons You Should(n’t) Love Me is a hilarious, heart-warming tale about how shit our wonderful lives can be.

ONE OFF

Written by RIC RENTON

The most astonishing new voice you will hear this year. ‘One Off was all the dignity afforded to those who could take no more. No names. Not even their number. One off. I AM DV7786 And I write this for all the dead boys, and for night watchman Jock, who, without his invisible, persistent presence, unseen in the corridors of HMP Durham, I too may have just been another One Off.’ RIC RENTON Born in Denton Burn, Ric Renton had a troubled upbringing that led to him spending his young adulthood in prison. Whilst in HMP Durham he learned to read and crucially to write. This is his story. Relived and performed by him. Three young men Knox, Brown and Shepherd pass their time in their respective cells. Energised by their friendship but with the walls around them getting smaller, haunted by the repeated pronouncements of another life lost, the arrival of a nightwatchman, Jock, offers Shepherd an unexpected way through the darkness.

S E L A T E LIV LIVE TALES STORY & PLAYWRITING WORKSHOPS FOR KEY STAGE 2 & KEY STAGE 3

Live Tales is a programme of free, fun, workshops which unlock the incredible imagination of pupils. They can embrace their creativity as worlds are built, characters come to life and ideas spark excitement and confidence. Pupils can explore original thinking and discover their voice as they craft their own stories and explore playwriting. Even the most reluctant of writers will be inspired! In the KS2 session the class create a brand new story and characters that are illustrated live as the children create them. The in person sessions take place at our studios at Live Theatre and at the Fire Station Sunderland. Our fantastic online workshop for KS2, Live

Tales Play Makers, explores plays and scripts through games designed around character, storytelling and dialogue.

“ We’ve had an amazing morning – a whole term’s worth in 90 minutes! The children had a great time!”

Live Tales KS3 focuses on playwriting through games that playfully explore change and conflict in drama, giving the pupils the freedom to write without constraints, and create an original short script by the end of the workshop.

M rs Howe, St Alban’s Primary School, Gateshead.

Teachers said:

“ The children loved the session and asked if they could carry on with another ‘Yes And’ story. They then set themselves a challenge to create a whole class version. They had to go round everyone before lunch to complete the tale. They were still talking about it well into the afternoon. Thanks again for the session it was excellent.” M r Boyle, Y5 teacher,

This is what the children had to say:

“ It was extremely, extremely fun and amazing! Thank you for the lovely lesson!” “Brilliant! Interesting! Hilarious!” FREE, Booking essential For information on times available and to book, go to www.live.org.uk/livetales and why not sign up to the teachers e-newsletter to receive regular updates.

SUPPORT US SUPPORT US VOLUNTEER

Live Theatre’s volunteers are an incredible group of people who give a wealth of energy and enthusiasm to the work of the theatre. Volunteer roles are varied and available in Live Tales, our children and young people’s writing centre, and in other areas of Live Theatre’s work. They include supporting and encouraging children and young people to write, illustrating their stories, or leading tours of the buildings.

All volunteers receive ongoing training and support, a programme of social events and some discounts at Live Theatre. There are opportunities in Live Theatre itself and in Live Tales in both Newcastle and Sunderland.

‘ It’s so exciting to see the children’s ideas flourish in this environment, and the way they work together to create brilliantly original stories.’ Live Tales Volunteer.

LIVE GIVING Help Live Theatre to continue its inspiring creative programme and play a vital role in supporting theatre in the North East. LIVE CORPORATE PARTNERSHIPS Our Corporate Partnership scheme develops mutually beneficial relationships between business and Live Theatre. Your company can become involved as a Corporate Partner, a sponsor of a production or a performance or by supporting one of our writing programmes, education or community initiatives. Our spaces are available to use for training or events and for corporate entertaining. PAY IT FORWARD – SHARE A SHOW At Live Theatre we believe that cost should never be a barrier to participation, and we want to share the life changing experiences that live theatre can create with our communities. We are pleased to launch a Pay It Forward scheme so that our audiences and supporters can buy a higher priced ticket, for just £10 more, which goes towards the cost of an extra ticket to be gifted to a member of one of the community groups we are working with in the North East.

BUT IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT US... The entire performing arts sector has been devastated by recent events. Even though our doors are open and new work is being produced, the damage done to our finances, our stability, our artists and our abilities to plan is huge. Live Theatre is only one part of that picture. Our many peers and colleagues across the region need your support and help as much as we do. We are so proud to be part of such a dynamic, varied and exceptional artistic scene here in Newcastle. It is worth fighting for and hugely urgent now that we each do what we can to ensure that everyone can enjoy a creatively thriving city. We have so many brilliant performing arts organisations doing so many brilliant

things including: Alphabetti, Curious Arts, Dance City, GIFT, Gosforth Civic Theatre, Northern Stage, People’s Theatre, Sage Gateshead, Theatre Royal, Tyne Theatre and Opera House, Sunderland Empire, The Fire Station and many more. Plus the huge amount of local theatre companies doing phenomenal work from Curious Monkey to Open Clasp via The Six Twenty, from Unfolding Theatre to the Lawnmowers via Blowin' a Hooley. Every ticket you buy to their shows, every donation you make, every coffee in their café or pint at their bar; these are all a direct investment into the art they produce and the artists and crews they can then employ. Nothing beats the thrill of live performance and you would get to have both a great night out and know that you are supporting a sector that needs your help to survive. Play Your Part in Making Live Performance in the North East thrive!
