community relations. As we assembled this issue, viewing hundreds of images and selecting which furnishings, textiles and accessories to cover, I considered our remarkable design community, which we are fortunate to report on in the pages of this magazine. The scope of talent, craftsmanship, ideas and influence—from architects and builders, to decorators, manufacturers and showrooms—is pretty astonishing and exceedingly inspiring. We shine a spotlight on these creative forces in the community, and discover what turns them on when it comes to design and lifestyle in our new Insider department. Check it out, and then expand beyond our pages by heading to luxedaily.com where we cover the design community at large.

Clockwise from top left: P.E. Guerin: I toured this foundry and was blown away by the handcrafted workmanship and attention to detail. Schumacher: When I previewed Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s new collection for Schumacher…well, let’s just say my head is still swimming with notions of how I’d decorate with this cut velvet gem. Neil Denari: Architect Neil Denari’s influence reaches sky high, particularly in West Chelsea where his firm’s HL23 condo is firmly planted. Hutton Wilkinson: What’s more impressive: The stellar art direction of Hutton Wilkinson’s latest tome, or the jewelry itself? You decide, because I still can’t!

ECCENTRIC EDGE Mondo Cane, on Duane Street in Tribeca, is one of the quirkier shops in the city. The focus is midcentury and primarily European—the inventory leans toward the unusual and unpredictable. In addition to major names, they feature many lesser known artisans and designers. Look for the exquisite little brass pieces by Viennese designer Carl Auböck—paperweights, corkscrews, bottle stoppers and candleholders. mondocane.com

DRIVER’S SEAT My ideal car is the one I have on order: number 415 of 600 Porsche GT3 RS 4.0. Mine is Paint To Sample Chartreuse—a 1973 Carrera RS color. This model has the last of the famous Metzger engines. Last fall, I completed the Peking to Paris Endurance Rally in a 1964 Porsche 356. porsche.com 3

VROOM, VROOM As a vintage car aficionado, my favorite fall event would have to be the Fairfield Concours d’Elegance, up in Westport. The show is run by terrific people, including Bill Scheffler, and emcee Donald Osborne is a good friend. The cars are simply beautiful. The event is great because it’s a kinder and gentler Concours, and not so fiercely competitive. fairfieldcountyconcours.com 2

DOWNTOWN SHRINE I love Brushstroke on Hudson Street, the new David Bouley Japanese restaurant. Cool interiors, high ceilings and a spare and woodsy design scheme give it an airy and contemplative feel, much like a Shinto shrine. Head chef Isao Yamada’s tasting menu is influenced by the Japanese school of cooking called kaiseki, which originated in the imperial courts of Kyoto. The dishes are excellent as is the extensive selection of sakes. davidbouley.com

EUROPEAN TOUCH One of my favorite shops is Pimlico in New Canaan. Co-owners Melissa Lindsay and Jill Saunders have created a delightful atmosphere where vintage meets modern and traditional is tempered by the unexpected. Given that my family lived in Belgium for 15 years, it’s a bit of a home-away-from-home with its eclectic sensibility and European style. I love the mix of furniture by Oly and Julian Chichester, and accessories like Ankasa pillows and Trowbridge art. pimlicohome.com 2

Daily deliveries of seafood—picked at their own fish market next door—mean the menu changes often, so you never know what delicacies Executive Chef Chris North will offer. One thing in particular has remained since Hutton Wilkinson took over the late Tony Duquette's legacy: the jewelry is still fearless, as evidenced in Wilkinson’s new book Tony Duquette/Hutton Wilkinson Jewelry, due out this November. The lavish, unapologetic designs can be seen in all their extravagant glory in the gorgeous pages of Wilkinson’s third book. “Tony always said that the difference between animals and humans is adornment,” says the charismatic designer. “We each have to eat and procreate to survive, but how we choose to clothe ourselves is the true difference. That’s magic.” Magic, indeed. Organized by color and material, Wilkinson’s latest oeuvre showcases the captivating explosion of gems—all one-of-a-kind pieces—that is synonymous with the Tony Duquette brand. “This book was written to inspire individuality and creativity in others,” says Wilkinson. “It’s for anyone who aspires to pretty things.” abramsbooks.com

The sleek exterior is a perfect fit for the modern, clean interiors by Danish designer Thomas Juul-Hansen. Adding to the narrative of the building, HL23 collaborated with April Magen, of Magen H. Mustique is most definitely a destination where dreams are built (both metaphorically and architecturally). DECORATIVE HARDWARE

Martin Grubman, P.E. Guerin

Luxe sat down with longtime p.e. guerin fixture martin grubman for an intimate look at the history, philosophy and artistry behind the brand, started by master craftsman pierre emmanuel guerin when he left France for new york city in 1857, a cache of tiny chisels and hammers in hand. over 150 years later, p.e. guerin still stands in a four-story building on jane street whose simple façade belies the exquisite custom fixtures and hardware the company creates for clients around the world. the process remains much as it was when guerin himself first established his shop, and a visit to the foundry—the only one in existence in new york city—is akin to a trip back in time.

From historical reproductions to whimsical Flights oF Fancy, Fine decorative hardware Firm p.e. guerin FaithFully creates its handcraFted masterpieces just as its Founder did beFore the turn oF the last century.

bespoke

HOW DO YOU PRESERVE THE gUERin HERiTAgE? it’s a family business, and always has been. guerin’s great grandnephew, andrew ward, runs the company, and we maintain a staff of about 60. many come to us as apprentices. the process is the same as when guerin was creating his own pieces. we still use his original tools—some are even older than the company—and when one breaks, we repair or recreate it ourselves. it’s not like we can go to the hardware store and replace it. the molds are handmade using patterns from our archive; we have an entire room full of them, stacked in boxes and on shelves from floor to ceiling. there are probably 100,000 different designs.

WAlk US THROUgH THE AcTUAl PROcESS. every piece in the shop is created, start-to-finish, by hand. we cast exclusively in sand—we go through about six tons a year—and each mold can only be used once. an impression is made in the sand using a pattern, or an actual model, and the metal is poured into the sand. that produces a raw casting, which gets hand filed and braised before going to a finish filer who smooths and refines it. after that it goes to a chaser, or chiseler, who uses chisels and hammers to re-delineate the design. the piece is polished and sent back to the chaser for more detail and texture—that’s what gives it its life-like nature—before it’s polished again, plated and patinated.

HOW MUcH cUSTOM WORk iS DOnE? a lot. one time someone came in and said, “i love hippos. can you make me a hippo faucet?” and i said, “sure!” someone else came in and said, “can you make me an elephant doorknob?” it happens all the time and no matter the request, we find a way to do it. every goofy thing you’ve ever heard of, we’ve made it. we collaborate with designers, architects and historians. guerin’s original work can still be seen in the hall of records and the villard houses in new york city, and in many historically significant buildings across the country. more current work can be found in the new york city public library—that was a restoration commission—tom Ford’s store on madison avenue and in museums.

DiScUSS YOUR cOMMiTMEnT TO cRAFT. there’s a character inherent in metal that can only be achieved by hand. you cannot accomplish it through other means. i analogize it this way: a machine-made sweater is perfect and looks just like all the other machine-made sweaters. but a handmade sweater—while not perfect—has a quality that draws you to it. it’s the same with metalwork. a hand-chased fixture possesses detail and personality and breaks up the light in a way that’s incredibly appealing. you just want to touch it. it’s a tactile aspect you get from something created by hand that you just don’t get when it’s made by a machine.

Finnish architect Alvar Aalto blended sleek, contemporary lines with tongue-in-cheek ingenuity when concepting his classic Paimio chair. For designer Eduardo Garza, there’s more to art than simply fashioning together creative ideas: Only after ethically sourcing and personally selecting all the materials that encompass each one of his pieces does the design process begin. Precious metals, stones and other natural elements of the highest quality are then manipulated into striking objet d’arts, such as this vibrant amethyst accented in white gold leaf and cradled by a gilt base.

05 DESIGN DIALOGUE HELLMAN - CHANG

Inspiration: For us, emotion has always been the big motivator—we want to be moved by a particular piece, or drawn in to touch its lines and surfaces.

Since founding their Brooklyn studio just five years ago, furniture designers Daniel Hellman and Eric Chang have quickly gained a following in the luxury design market. Here, the duo discuss their unlikely start:

Recognition: Shortly after we won the Best of Year award in 2006, we received an order from the Four Seasons—our first order, in fact. It was overwhelming, exciting and definitely marked our first big achievement as designers.

Beginnings: We actually began designing furniture together out of Daniel’s garage when we were kids. We went separate ways in college, but came back together because of our passion for designing and building furniture.

Movie Debut: A few years back, we received calls from the teams working on Sex and the City 2 and Gossip Girl wanting to use our pieces on their sets, which indicated we had been quietly getting recognition from the fashion and design elite.

Process: Our process is extremely organic. Everything is designed and manufacturered by hand, using carving techniques from hundreds of years ago to make contemporary design details that haven’t been done before.

06

Surprising Fact: Daniel actually majored in classical guitar performance, and Eric went to NYU to study business and finance. Interestingly, Daniel is better with numbers, and Eric is more at home putting pencil to paper! hellman-chang.com

Growing up with sketchbooks and canvases, Matthew Fairbank always figured he’d become a painter. But, when he offered to jumpstart a classmate’s car while attending RISD and spied the pieces she was crafting for her furniture design concentration, he inadvertently jumpstarted his career as well: “I begged the department to let me in.” Since debuting his first collec-

Fairbank’s inventory includes pieces crafted from domestic woods and satin brass, such as the angular Osiris chandelier, shown.

tion at the BKLYN Designs show in 2009, Fairbank has established himself as a designer and manufacturer of elegant, minimalist furniture with subtle nods to decorative periods. Fairbank’s fine-art sensibility is ever present in his pieces (think mortise-and-tenon joinery, textured domestic woods and satin brass hardware he fabricates himself), encouraged perhaps by a ‘no machines’ first semester in school. “Working with hand tools made me appreciate not how quickly you get to the end goal, but which route you choose to get there,” says Fairbank, who, in addition to working on pieces to show at ICFF, plays in a band called Small Devices. “I’ve taken the scenic route.” matthewfairbankdesign.com; 917.414.1419

artisanal calling

Matthew Fairbank Work approach: I try to distill the forms of the past through a current lens, creating stark minimalist pieces accented with restrained historical details.

What’s inspiring you now? When I look to the past, old things seem new again. Currently, I’m loving Art Deco furniture and the Wiener Werkstätte era.

I’m reading… The Craftsman, by Richard Sennett. It explores the importance of craftsmanship, which Sennett defines as “the desire to do a job well for its own sake.”

Design icons: Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec and Rich Brilliant Willing are some of my favorites. I am very inspired by artisans who take a hands-on approach to design.

Inside tip: In Buddhist meditation, there’s an emphasis on staying in the present and focusing on one task at a time. This wisdom helps me throughout the day.

Up-and-coming interior designer Tyler Taylor poses in The Summer House in New Canaan, Connecticut, the shop she opened six years ago. Opposite: Taylor’s newest venture will be focusing full time on translating her sophisticated, eclectic style to homes across the country. Here, she reimagines a dining room with a table and chandelier from The Summer House and Benjamin Moore’s New York State of Mind on the walls.

“I’ve been some sort of artist forever,” laughs Tyler Taylor, a jack-of-all-trades in the creative world who worked as an actress before finding her place in interior design. “I’ve always been surrounded by creative people.” Influenced early on by her collector grandparents (who, at one point, owned the largest

private collection of American flags in the country), Taylor first forayed into decorating with The Summer House, the dual home furnishings/antiques shop and fine art gallery she opened in New Canaan, Connecticut, nearly six years ago. Recognition immediately ensued for Taylor’s keen eye for pairing European antiques with contemporary furnishings and the handful of up-and-coming artists she represents in the store. Most recently, Taylor parlayed her collecting pedigree into a full-fledged interior design business, hoping to extend the reach of her self-proclaimed, “California sexy” style to residences across the country. “I’m looking at what’s emerging,” she says. “It’s not about owning one Warhol, but about the 15 artists you’ve never heard of that are coming up in the world.” tylertaylorinteriors.com; 917.447.3135

ENDLESS SUMMER

TYLER TAYLOR What’s inspiring you now? I’ve been perusing European design magazines lately. They have a wonderful ability to put fine art into modern homes in a way that’s beautiful and funky.

Coveted item: A painting by Joe Concra of wings on a black background that’s very mysterious, haunting and whimsical. It was the first thing I was able to buy after I’d had my store for a year and made a bit of money.

Greatest influence: Coco Chanel is my favorite woman. I love her style and her tenacity.

Trends you’re excited by: Last Christmas, I was obsessed with canary yellow. It’s only coming out now. It’s such a fabulous color. I also love fur, faux fur and leather—anything that’s textural.

Work approach: Elegant, with a little California sexy. I love the idea of a contemporary sofa paired with a tiger maple chest.

If you asked Joseph Carini to define the essence of a good carpet, he’d respond with three simple necessities: “Materials, craftsmanship and inspired design.” Prior to founding his New York City-based studio Carini

A silk and wool hand-knotted carpet from Carini Lang, titled Penelope, features a neutral palette and updated damask design.

Lang in 1999, the designer studied painting at New York’s National Academy and worked briefly as a dealer of 19th-century French paintings and antiques, eventually cultivating a passion for antique Asian carpets. “I was drawn to the mystery and ancient language contained in them,” he says. Since then, he’s earned a reputation among top designers and architects for producing the finest carpets using hand-spun mohair, cashmere, wool or silk, handmade vegetable and mineral dyes, and a dwindling supply of Nepalese weavers versed in artisanal crafts. His emphasis on artistry over commerce applies to his newest forays, too, which include a collection of cashmere blankets and limited edition bronze furnishings, available spring 2012. “I try to remain true to the art form I’m working in,” says Carini, “because, ultimately, I feel I’m competing with the masters of the past.” carinilang.com; 646.613.0497

MAGIC CARPET RIDE

JOSEPH CARINI Dream collaboration: I’d love to work with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards to create a carpet that captures the visual interpretation of their music and style. Of course, it would be on stage for an entire Rolling Stones tour!

Favorite decorating sources: Todd Merrill Antiques, Chelsea Guitars in the Chelsea Hotel, Westsider Rare & Used Books and Double Knot, all in New York City.

Design icon: Tom Ford, because he seems to share my interest in recapturing lost glamour from periods past.

Collection: My biggest is vintage guitars from the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s—quintessential American ones like Gibsons and Martins.

Dream dinner party guests: I’d want to create a slightly uncomfortable mix with, say, Elvis, Hunter S. Thompson, Steve McQueen, Madonna, Jackie Onassis and Muhammad Ali.

Center44 While national design publications continue to sing the praises of Center44, it’s the customer for whom Manhattan’s most inspired antique and interior marketplace consistently hits all the right notes. Since opening the doors to Center44 in 2006, Jim Tindell and Paul Plumadore have wowed discerning shoppers in the heart of Midtown with an eclectic array of furnishings, lighting, fine art and accessories spread out over a single 25,000-square-foot showroom. Approximately 75 diverse boutiques offer items that cover a myriad of styles and periods—from 18th and 19th century antiques to swank Art Deco to savvy mid-century Modernism. “We feel our biggest success has been the fact that we have created a friendly salon atmosphere where communication is free-flowing and every effort is made to fulfill the needs of any given project,” the founders of Center44 agree. “To that end, we not only offer items for sale and search for items to meet special needs, but we also introduce clients to various craftsman and professionals. Our motto is ‘That’s what we’re here for!’” With the help of Tindell and Plumadore, whose hands-on approach personalizes and enhances the experience at Center44, shoppers begin to see possibilities of design they never knew existed. “In our showroom they see antiques juxtaposed with vintage material in a wide range of styles that offer insights into creative expression.”

“For the best antiquing under one roof, I always hit Center44. It should be called the ‘Grand Bazaar’ of New York, as 75 dealers make the ‘Art of the Deal’ spicy!” —Amy Lau, interior designer

& windows RaydooR A funny thing happened to Luke Siegel on his way out of the International Contemporary Furniture Fair a little more than a decade ago. The then-furniture designer entered with a custom-made chair that earned an ICFF award. He left with scores of business cards from interior designers interested in the handcrafted sliding door that he had brought as a background piece. “That was my epiphany,” Siegel says. “No one was paying attention to artistry and level of detail when it came to interior division.” Since launching Raydoor in 2000, Siegel has not only given the product its just due, he’s revolutionized the way that individuals view, appreciate and utilize room dividers. The key is a patented marriage of wood and acrylic that produces a strong yet lightweight door system; the edge literally glows when light hits just right. “Take a Japanese Shoji screen concept and fuse it with modern architecture and interactive art,” Siegel says. “In its highest state, that’s what we do.” That’s not all that distinguishes Raydoor. Siegel invests in engineering and hardware that enhance his systems in ways customers never thought possible. “We consider the space, how you want it to flow, how often the doors are going to be used,” he says. “We offer a myriad of transmissions systems for how the panel can be moved and perform. The doors, in essence, can become a kinetic sculpture or simply an efficient space management tool.”

Which projects have brought you the most satisfaction?

What are the key influences in your work today?

What are you working on next?

Projects where a Raydoor can turn a spatial limitation into an asset, or where it can transform a single space into more than the sum of its parts.

We always pursue the art and technology of interior division. Influences include trends from furniture, fashion and auto industries that emphasize style and functional details.

Product refinement— like an edge gasket that permits greater design flexibility; and a soft-close track that prevents doors from slamming.

FEATURES: The opal-frosted sliding wing wall system for this condo in Miami accentuates Raydoor’s ability to transform a single space into more than the sum of its parts without compromising, in this case, the minimalist vibe in the room.

builder Shoreline PoolS, inc. Established in 1969, Shoreline Pools was built on the premise that a swimming pool should be an expression of style that extends and complements the natural boundaries of a home. For more than 40 years, the Stamford, Connecticut-based company has delivered custom, in-ground swimming pools with exceptional attention to workmanship, materials and service. “Every project is completely unique—we don’t use templates,” says Shoreline president David Lionetti. “If you have a certain vision or specific need, we can find a way to meet it.” The Shoreline team is comprised of the most experienced and well-trained tradesmen and artisans in the industry. WHOLE GRAINS It’s sometimes easy to get lost in the sleek, minimalist lines of contemporary design; there’s something inherently soothing and appealing about a blank, uninterrupted surface. The drawback, however, is that there’s a very thin line between clean and sterile, and the team at Ornare had to tread it carefully. So, they paired the super modern cabinetry of their new Satyrium series with reclaimed wood on the walls and table and carefully sourced antique light pendants from Brazil to bring a warm, lived-in feel to this contemporary-meets-organic kitchen. “The idea was to give the space a real human element,” says Claudio Faria, director of Ornare Miami. “All of the natural woods make the straight, sharp shapes of the cabinetry more comfortable and homey.” A custom-made range hood and plenty of wine storage courtesy of GE Monogram coolers work to introduce a bit of stainless steel to the otherwise matte finishes used throughout, while illuminated shelves pop against their wooden backdrop for an unexpected touch.

“It’s important that every kitchen be highly personalized, from the layout and the location of the appliances to the accessories that line each drawer.” Claudio Faria, Ornare Miami Miami, FL

CLEAN WASH Nature calls—literally—in this bathroom by Dion McCarthy, Mark Kirkhart and Andrew Alper, of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara-based DesignARC. Pocketing glass doors slide away to create a seamless transition between indoors and out, offering a stunning view of the reservoir in the distance from the cozy contours of the Agape bathtub. “Absolutely every part of the room has a view of and a strong relationship to the outdoors,” says McCarthy. “We let the site dictate the texture and color palette, which brings a nice organic quality to the space.” It’s a quality that is carried through to the knotty wood bench and chair and the interesting metallic-inspired finish of the glazed, porcelain shower tiles by Tau Ceramica from Stone Source. While the bathroom is purposely spare to keep the focus on the unique materials and panoramic vistas, the designer is careful to point out how much the space accomplishes with its less-is-more credo. “It’s not the kind of minimalism you see in a museum,” says McCarthy. “There’s an effortless accessibility to it that speaks unabashedly to and about the human body.”

“I try to include a small piece of nature in all of my designs. It’s crucial to create some kind of refuge, especially in the midst of the din of city living.” Dion McCarthy, DesignARC, Inc. Los Angeles, CA

At least that’s how architect Stuart L. Disston

envisioned it when a New York couple, wanting to ensure that their empty nest would be brimming with family on weekends, asked him to transform the 1980s wood-clad beach house they purchased into an ultra-modern, über-fun gathering place. “When you are in it, you are at sea,” says the owner.

And so began a major two-year renovation. Disston, partner at Austin Patterson Disston Architects in Quogue, New York, drew up plans for the design, taking inspiration from the wife, who has general affinities for stone over wood, New York City lofts and rooftop nightclubs. What resulted was uncharted territory for the architect. “We’re known for more traditional work,” says Disston, who helmed the renovation with project manager Josh Rosensweig. “The owners introduced us to some modern exterior skin systems. They were the perfect clients for this.” To clad the structure, the owner specified the use of stucco and terra cotta: “I wanted to use materials that were impervious to the elements,” the husband says. Restricted by building codes to keep the envelope of the original structure, Disston created volume by gutting the middle and installing 16-foot-high glass structural fin walls on either side of the two-story living room, affording views of both bodies of water simultaneously—ergo the “at sea” feeling. “Because of the huge windows, you can stand on the north deck and see the ocean, or you can stand on the south deck and see the bay,” the architect says. Furthermore, Disston deliberately obscured views of the neighboring beach village by installing semi-opaque alabaster material and clerestory windows on the north end, providing the sensation when inside of traveling by boat in a southerly direction.

Inside, pops of color are the exception in the primarily neutral color scheme. The couple have been long-time friends and clients of New York City-based designers Stephen B. Jacobs and Andi Pepper, so they called on them to keep things ultra-minimalist but inviting. “There’s a softness that contrasts the rectilinear qualities; it isn’t minimalism in its traditional sense,” Jacobs says. In the living area, the severity of the cube-like space is softened with a fireplace wall upholstered in cream-colored Ultrasuede. “It counteracts the noise and hardness,” says design principal Pepper, who, along with project manager Vaishali Singh, directed the interior design for the project. The S-shaped Vladimir Kagan sofa further softens the room, and takes its color cue from the Mondrian-esque tri-color floor pattern designed by Pepper, who is also a trained artist. To add warmth in the dining area, a large walnut table from Hudson brings an organic element to the pivotal space. The fun continues upstairs, with a backlit onyx bar leading to a cozy lounge area off to the ocean side, where the wife, who’s learning to be a DJ, entertains on the turntables. “We added more gold upstairs,” says Pepper of the lounge’s gilded shades that reflect the living areas downstairs. Opposite the lounge and overlooking the bay side is a spacious deck outfitted with white Dedon furnishings from Janus et Cie that are easily—and often—moved to create a rooftop dance floor; the full moon its perfect disco ball. While the historic structure’s stone façade and elegant lobby evoked the grandeur of a Renaissance palazzo, the condo unit bought by his clients—a couple with two school-age children—was newly carved out of a former commercial space and “basically a box,” the designer recalls. “It had vast hallways, well-proportioned rooms and high ceilings—the way we would all live in an ideal world.” Yet, there was not a shred of original architectural detail. Gorrivan’s first challenge: to create new interior architecture that would hold its own in a building with such grand bones. “I wanted the apartment to feel classic and European, like the building itself,” he says. To that end, Gorrivan, working with contractor and interior renovation specialist Stephen Fanuka, created custom plaster crown moldings, baseboards and millwork based on early-20th-century French designs, including arched mahogany doors with custom silver-finished hardware that was designed to tarnish. “I want people to walk in and feel as if the interiors have always been there,” says Gorrivan. Besides adding architectural detail, Gorrivan optimized the space, borrowing square footage from an oversize entry gallery to create a home office and laundry room, and reconfiguring closets in the master

bedroom to allow for a separate dressing room. The kitchen, which initially “wasn’t going to get touched at all,” ended up completely re-done, with new cabinets stretching to the ceiling to maximize storage space. Likewise, the master bath, which was rather too glitzy for the couple, was entirely re-thought. Now donning a black-and-white palette with Art Deco sconces and floors made of solid slabs of Thassos marble, it harks back to the building’s pre-war origins. Unlike typical pre-war apartments, which were, as Gorrivan puts it, “chopped up into small rooms,” this one has no formal dining room, but instead features an enormous main living space—about 40 feet long and 20 feet wide with 12-foot ceilings. Gorrivan calls it a “salon” rather

than a living room, and it epitomizes another important goal of the redesign: to create comfortable, relaxed quarters for family living as well as stylish space for entertaining. “It’s a living room, family room and dining room all in one. On a school night, the children could be working on computers or watching TV. The whole family can be in that room doing different things at the same time. The salon serves spectacularly for large cocktail events; a contemporary round table tucked in a corner, with classic chairs by Robsjohn-Gibbings, seats eight for intimate dinner parties.

counter culture The builder’s kitchen was completely revamped with custom cabinetry, black absolute honed slab countertops sourced by builder Stephen Fanuka and grass-cloth walls. “I take a maximalist approach to decorating, without going over the top,” says Gorrivan. “Every surface has some sort of treatment or texture, even if it’s subtle.”

c o n t i n u e d f r o m p a g e 214

In selecting furnishings, Gorrivan balanced comfort and elegance. A showstopping borne in the entry foyer, covered in metallic linen, is reminiscent of the early 20th century, setting the tone for the apartment. Two antique French pieces—a Louis XVI-style console and an 18th-century commode—stand against walls covered in a subtle checkerboard grass cloth, which brings their formality down a notch. In the salon, floor-to-ceiling drapes and tailored sofas covered in uncut velvet are supplemented by striking accent pieces, like Holly Hunt’s mirrored console, that capture the spirit of New York in the Art Deco era.

blue print Luxurious textures in the master bedroom—a silk carpet, a headboard upholstered in Highland Court cut velvet, Holly Hunt chairs upholstered in Rogers & Goffigon linen, and Highland Court satin draperies—establish an atmosphere of serenity and comfort. The artwork is by Teo González.

The salon’s walls have a subtly mottled Venetian plaster finish by Jonas Everets Design in New York City; the kitchen and master bedroom walls are grass cloth, elephant gray and aqua respectively, for “quiet texture.” Punches of red, from the Jimmy Ernst painting in the salon and a pair of Christian Liaigre chairs with cut-out backs to the crimson banquette in the kitchen, where the family takes most of its meals, make the apartment feel friendly, Gorrivan says. “Red is a very powerful color. Unlike orange or acid green, which are also strong colors that make a statement, red is very classic and not a trendy color at all.” Like all the design decisions in the apartment, Gorrivan adds, “It’s a reflection of the homeowners—sophisticated but not overly formal or grand.” L

some designers might have been taken aback by the unusual request, but shawn henderson didn’t b l i n k a n e y e.

What the couple wanted for their circa-1700s

clapboard farmhouse was the “overall feel” of their favorite hotel —a serene beauty high above the Pacific Ocean in New Zealand. The project was right up Henderson’s alley, known as he is for sophisticated, comfortably refined interiors. So, armed only with the suggestion to “have a look at the hotel’s website,” he began planning a light, airy design that would honor the property’s architectural heritage.

setting the stage Edgy yet familiar, the entry teams an industrial steel interpretation of Dutch designer Gerrit Rietveld’s Zig Zag chair and Gregory Crewdson’s photograph Untitled (Dead Cow Discovery) from the couple’s collection with a soft-to-the-touch braided rug. c o n t i n u e d f r o m p a g e 221

Situated on 23 lush acres in tony Litchfield County, Connecticut, the L-shaped home unites three components: the original two-story main building, a former barn (now the living room) and the connecting passageway Henderson transformed into a super-simple dining room. The latter two, along with a wing in the main structure containing the kitchen, family room and master bedroom suite, were added on about 20 years ago. “The previous owner did a fantastic job on renovations,” says Henderson. “My clients, who were moving back to New York after seven years abroad, loved everything about it. I only had to create a homey interior that they and their baby boy, now joined by a brother, would enjoy as a weekend retreat and place to entertain friends and family.” And they made it even easier for Henderson by bringing only two items and an extensive art collection to be incorporated into the mix. 222 l u x e i n t e r i o r s

With the homeowners still in London, everything was communicated via e-mail and FedEx, save for one face-to-face meeting where Henderson presented his plan. Six months later, with the help of Millbrook, New Yorkbased general contractor Robert P. Campbell on minor alterations such as the addition of a tub in one of the bathrooms, the home was finished just in time for their arrival. And while the furnishings chosen lean toward contemporary, the house’s original elements, from the nine stone fireplaces to the rustic pine flooring and paneling, were left exactly as found, inspiring nearly everything Henderson did. Exemplifying this on a lofty scale is the 30-foot-high living room sheathed in pine and crowned with an arc of carved beams. “Too much of any one thing won’t work,” the designer advises. “There must be luxe interiors

balance between every element, from color to texture to silhouette.” Henderson proves this mantra here. Even the unusual Pierre Abadie chair sits easy among the straight lines. “It’s very mod,” he observes, “but the folded steel it’s crafted from reflects the beams’ metal brackets, and its curves the room’s shape.” Originality is an undisputed “must” for the pro, top to bottom. The master bedroom, for instance, where a tufted headboard stretches the length of what could have been a problematic 10-foot-long rectangular window, features lamps with bases formed of chain links that are “probably old machine parts,” Henderson says. “They’re like bits of jewelry for a room.” Always a realist, he chose them not only because of their offbeat nature, but because they don’t block the light. Another example of the designer’s expertise in combining form with function is the oversize ottoman in the living room. Serving dual purposes, it bridges the two seating areas and allows guests to converse freely between both sides.

harmonious haven The light-filled master bedroom is outfitted in a serene palette, as evident in pieces such as a cotton carpet from Beauvais Carpets, a custom tufted upholstered headboard and an antique turned-leg chair.

fill ’er up The enormous master bathroom—it measures approximately 15 feet by 20 feet—required proportionately large furnishings. Among designer Shawn Henderson’s finds is the 6-foot-long antique dining table taking the place of a traditional vanity.

c o n t i n u e d f r o m p a g e 228

Pragmatic about furnishings—“otherwise there’s the risk they’ll end up in my house,” says the designer with a laugh—Henderson shops the Internet as frequently as he does high-end dealers in France. And, when he can’t find what he’s looking for, he reupholsters or manufactures it. In the office, for example, Henderson re-covered an antique butterflylike Paul McCobb desk chair in burnt orange Holly Hunt leather and, in a sitting area off the master bedroom, he custom-designed a 10-footlong sofa, inspired by vintage club chairs he found for the space. “This was the first house my clients have ever bought,” Henderson says. “I wanted to make it perfect.” If the owners’ words are any indication, he succeeded: “The wife told me when it was completed, ‘It feels like every piece belongs here.’ ” L

houses necessarily morph to accommodate the needs of growing families.

An addition here, a renovation there, and pretty soon

you’re looking at a pastiche that feels cobbled together rather than cohesive. Of course, there’s a certain eccentric charm to this kind of structure. But, practically speaking, it doesn’t function too efficiently. Such was the case with this Weston, Connecticut, weekend retreat of a fiftysomething couple—he a movie producer, she a philanthropist—with four children ranging from 4 to 20 years old. “As our oldest son got taller, he couldn’t stand up in his shower because of the eaves,” recalls his mother. “Somehow, we went to renovate the bathroom and, before we knew it, we were taking off whole sides of the house.” Interior designer Elissa Cullman, who oversaw the decoration with her senior designer Lee Cavanaugh, recalls the husband joking, “The only thing I’m left with is my address and phone number.” But, a full-scale renovation was really

Translation? Lots of sleeping quarters, as well as all the modern amenities necessary to keep the younger residents entertained. But the wife worried: “In doing such a large project you often lose the intimacy. I didn’t want to sacrifice the feeling of charm the old house had, and I most definitely didn’t want it to be a showpiece.” To sensitively super-size the home’s country French maison atmosphere (square footage basically doubled), the owners brought in the late architect Elliott Rosenblum, who spearheaded the architectural design along with his partner, Izumi Shepard (currently with John B. Murray Architect) and project architect Jason J. Hwang (today head of his own namesake practice) under the now-extinct firm Rosenblum Architects. luxe interiors

“We used a lot of wood, a key element in country French homes,” explains Shepard. “We also brought in stone and wrought iron, and we distressed new beams to make them look old.” To humanize the newly taller interior spaces, she adds, the team designed white oak ceilings in various rooms, alternating their form—a diamond-shaped grid in the dining room, rectangles in the living room, imposing Gothic trusses in the family room—thereby imbuing each with unique character. Hwang slaved over the vast oval foyer (30 feet across at its longest and 35 feet high) to ensure the stairway did not mar its perfect elliptical swoop. He sought inspiration for the custom banister from photographs he’d taken of Parisian ironwork. Additionally, Hwang designed millwork with lots of furniture details to instill even more warmth in certain rooms.

Seeking a balance between comfort and sophistication, Cullman and Cavanaugh took the owners shopping in France, where they purchased mantels, chandeliers, antiques—even a 1920s zinc-topped bar from Marché Serpette for the billiards room. These were complemented with the modern comfort of oversize upholstered pieces. Also, remembers Cavanaugh, to sidestep a stuffy period aesthetic, “The clients embraced the idea of modern, large-scale photography, which is what gives the house a slight contemporary edge.” Collaborating with art consultant Lorinda Ash, the designers assembled works by Candida Höfer, Robert Polidori, Clifford Ross and other heavy hitters.

concedes jokingly. “She was willing to be more floppy in other rooms, but because the living room is the first room you see, it had to be elegant and perfect.” Still, grandiosity was clearly kept at bay. And with added amenities (such as a bowling alley, movie theater, arcade room, miniature playground with built-in trampoline, etc.) it’s easy to see that this home, no matter how immense, is about relaxing with beloved family and friends. “Basically,” says Cullman, “they never have to leave the house.” L

PRINCESS DIARIES

Gifted to Princess Margaret by English aristocrat Colin Tennant, Les Jolies Eaux is a neo-Georgian five-bedroom estate overlooking the southern tip of the island. The style is British Colonial, with casually chic furnishings and antiques. With French doors throughout, it’s best to keep them flung open to capture royal views.

These oversize sunglasses feature a multi-tone design reminiscent of the 1970s. Anemone, $640; louisvuitton.com

JUNGLE FEVER

Yemanjá is seven sprawling acres of tropical splendor with two boulderfringed pools surrounded by lush foliage. The warm, inviting interiors are inspired by Brazil and Africa. At the heart of the expansive estate is an opulent thatch-roofed palapa, with sweeping views and snug spots for reading or an apt afternoon nap.

Traditional materials meet fresh design with Custom Cool’s ikat rug. Ikat (Blue), price available upon request; customcoolrugs.com

ASIAN FLAIR

Perched 300 feet above the sea is the Japanese-style Shogun villa. Five pavilion-like guest suites are assembled around a central koi pond and lush tropical gardens abound. Interiors are Asian-hip with dark woods and Balinese styling. A nine-hole golf course on site isn’t bad either.

Bulgari’s travel bag boasts palladiumplated hardware and black leather. Bulgari Travel Bag, $2,600; us.bulgari.com

7: The natural beauty of Sheherezade; 8: Stairway to heaven at Toucan Hill; 9: The slip-covered chic life at Mimosa.

FANTASY ISLAND

The theatrical Toucan Hill is an opulent island fantasy. Moorish architecture with colonnades rendered in indigo blue and white, jewel-toned lanterns, and Saharan gold-colored interior walls add to the glamour. Virtually 360-degree ocean views can be seen from the property's many hilltop perches.

ROYAL TREATMENT Malaysian-born fashion designer Zang Toi is a household naMe aMong red-carpeT favoriTes,

HigH Style It’s fitting that Zang Toi’s fashion atelier is dubbed “House of Toi.” It is, after all, where the designer crafts his luxury couture collections that, unbeknownst to many, bear striking similarities to his Upper East Side pied-à-terre. “There’s an element of glamour that shows in both my home design and fashion line,” Toi says. Inspired by Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, Toi tested his creative prowess when he set out to revamp an early-20th-century apartment with preciously detailed antiques and opuFashion veteran Valentino created these peep-toe pumps with raised black embroidery atop cream leather to mimic a lace finish. lent textures. Much like his runway creations, it’s the well-articulated details—silver leaf, crystal accents, a two-tone palette that was implemented to mimic the appearance of a black and white photograph—that define Toi’s work. When asked what the fashion equivalent is to his home, Toi says, “I see it as a glamorous black and white gown with silver beading, worn by a modern-day Marie Antoinette.” houseoftoi.com

parisian persuasion Enamored with French styles, fashion designer Zang Toi transformed an early-20th-century New York City apartment into his personal Parisian-inspired retreat. Posh accents in the sitting room, such as a custom silver-fox rug, antique Baccarat chandelier and portraits of Marie Antoinette by artist Natasha Zupan, pop against high-gloss white walls. COLOR THEORY THE CREATIVE FORCE BEHIND REBEL-CHIC FASHION HOUSE LIBERTINE HAS A HIDDEN AFFINITY FOR INTERIORS, MADE EVIDENT IN THE MODERN TRANSFORMATION OF HIS RUSTIC LOS ANGELES BUNGALOW.

REFASHIONED APPROACH Fans of Johnson Hartig’s lauded eco-friendly fashion label Libertine revel in his ability to turn tired vintage clothing into couture ensembles. So, it comes as no surprise that Hartig’s eye for refashioning antiques seems to effortlessly translate to interiors, too. “I love collecting, being resourceful, mixing things up and surprising people,” Hartig says. Such was his method when he set out to design A solid piece of wood forms the band for this unique cuff, complete with a 14-karat gold accent with spinel and white coral charms. 14K YG Spinel & Coral Cuff, $6,950; devillefinejewelry.com

his Los Angeles home, incorporating a mix of vintage and modern pieces, vibrant Damien Hirst paintings and graphic black and white fabrics. Rules rarely apply to the self-taught designer, who often finds inspiration in the unexpected and pays little attention to trends, which explains, Hartig says, why the evolution of his interiors is as constant as his couture collections. “My home, like Libertine, is always a work in progress.” ilovelibertine.com

Design Tip: Go wild, edit and try as many combinations as you need until something jumps out.

Available in a number of coverings from Elite Leather, this soft angular swivel chair features a brushed aluminum base and unique upholstered body. Palos Verdes, price available upon request; eliteleather.com

Sneak Peek: I’m in a ’70s mood for spring 2012. It’s an era that made a big impression on me, even as a kid decorating my bedroom.

Interior Insight: I like to make sure every room has one great antique piece as an anchor, and then I work from there.

Part of ABC Carpet’s Color Reform collection, this antique, hand-woven rug was over-dyed in Turkey to give it a deep, saturated color. Purple Color Reform Vintage Rug, $2,999; abccarpet.com

Up Next: I was approached before to design a line for the home and wasn’t ready. Now, I think I am.

Johnson Hartig’s fall collection for Libertine is reminiscent of works of art, specifically, he says, “post-World War German expressionistic prints. We took a small area and blew it up to get the look we were going for.” 258 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

STAYING POWER FROM THE EARLY CREATION OF DIANE VON FURSTENBERG’S ICONIC WRAP DRESS TO THE INTRODUCTION OF HER ANTICIPATED LINE OF HOME DÉCOR, IT SEEMS THERE’S NOTHING THE RESPECTED STYLE ARBITER CAN’T TACKLE.

BRANCHING OUT It’s little known that Diane von Furstenberg’s passion for interior design stretches as far back as the 1980s, when, while lovers of the DVF brand were admiring her revival of figure-flattering dresses, she released a series of books on home décor. “I love the balance between color, texture, pattern and proportion that can exist in both fashion and the home,” she says. Often acclaimed Turkish jewelry designer Sevan Biçakçi crafted this ornate ring with 24-karat gold, white, yellow and cognac diamonds and pink tourmaline cabochons. R3028, $9,887; barneys.com

for her liberal use of pattern and color, it seemed a natural transition for von Furstenberg to later debut lines of homeware and textiles. Most recently, von Furstenberg channeled her expert sense of interior design in a series of suites for the venerable Claridge’s hotel in London. “My aim was to respect the legendary glamour of the hotel, while incorporating pieces that beautifully illustrate my passion for pattern, texture and travel.” dvf.com

Muse: I am always inspired by women, nature and the 20th century. For me, these sources are timeless.

An intricate hand-carved wood frame wraps a gilded inset frame on this luxurious statement-making mirror from Christopher Guy. 50-2926, price available upon request; christopherguy.com

Design Tip: Have fun with textures, large prints, florals and stripes in ways that make you feel beautiful, but comfortable.

Philosophy: I design clothes that I love and that I think women will feel beautiful wearing. The same applies to my home products.
