community relations. As we assembled this issue, viewing hundreds of images and selecting which furnishings, textiles and accessories to cover, I considered our remarkable design community, which we are fortunate to report on in the pages of this magazine. The scope of talent, craftsmanship, ideas and influence—from architects and builders, to decorators, manufacturers and showrooms—is pretty astonishing and exceedingly inspiring. We shine a spotlight on these creative forces throughout the pages of this issue. I hope it turns you on enough that you want to see even more. Ready? Then head to luxedaily.com where we cover the design community at large every single day.

Clockwise from top left: P.E. Guerin: I toured this foundry and was blown away by the handcrafted workmanship and attention to detail. Schumacher: When I previewed Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s new collection for Schumacher…well, let’s just say my head is still swimming with notions of how I’d decorate with this cut velvet gem. Neil Denari: Architect Neil Denari’s influence reaches sky high, particularly in West Chelsea where his firm’s HL23 condo is firmly planted. Hutton Wilkinson: What’s more impressive: The stellar art direction of Hutton Wilkinson’s latest tome, or the jewelry itself? You decide, because I still can’t!

One thing in particular has remained since Hutton Wilkinson took over the late Tony Duquette's legacy: the jewelry is still fearless, as evidenced in Wilkinson’s new book Tony Duquette/Hutton Wilkinson Jewelry, due out this November. The lavish, unapologetic designs can be seen in all their extravagant glory in the gorgeous pages of Wilkinson’s third book. “Tony always said that the difference between animals and humans is adornment,” says the charismatic designer. “We each have to eat and procreate to survive, but how we choose to clothe ourselves is the true difference. That’s magic.” Magic, indeed. Organized by color and material, Wilkinson’s latest oeuvre showcases the captivating explosion of gems—all one-of-a-kind pieces—that is synonymous with the Tony Duquette brand. “This book was written to inspire individuality and creativity in others,” says Wilkinson. “It’s for anyone who aspires to pretty things.” abramsbooks.com

MUSEUM QUALITY When an artist is revered as one of the most significant painters of his time, there’s only one natural course of action: build a comprehensive museum dedicated to preserving his legacy. On November 18, the Clyfford Still Museum opens in Denver within a cantilevered structure designed by Allied Works Architecture, shedding natural and metaphorical light on an oeuvre that has largely never before been on public display. clyffordstillmuseum.org

CANADIAN FLAVOR Just a stone’s throw over Lake Ontario in Toronto’s business district lies the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company’s first Canadian outpost to date—and the newest location from the luxury hotel brand. Unveiled this past spring, the 53-story Ritz-Carlton, Toronto consists of a hotel, residences, spa and world-class restaurant, all laden with Canadian insignia, including works by local artists and engraved replicas of the country’s symbolic maple leaf. The 23,000-square-foot spa’s co-ed sun room, shown, is awash with natural light and serene hues. ritzcarlton.com

MODERN MARVEL HL23, the new landmark building by acclaimed Los Angeles architect Neil Denari, welcomed its first residents this past summer in Manhattan's reinvigorated West Chelsea neighborhood. The 14-story structure houses 11 full-floor residences—including two duplexes—with sweeping views of the High Line park, thanks to floor-to-ceiling, low-iron windows. The sleek exterior is a perfect fit for the modern, clean interiors by Danish designer Thomas Juul-Hansen. Adding to the narrative of the building, HL23 collaborated with April Magen, of Magen H. Gallery, and Nicholas Kilner, of Sebastian + Barquet, on selecting midcentury modern furnishings to adorn some spaces. hl23.com

SKIN DEEP Maker of sumptuous leather goods, Moore & Giles has introduced a lust-worthy material line by modern-meets-traditional interior designer Kara Mann. From rich French nubuck suede and buttery aniline leather to polished German calfskin, the new collection features three distinct styles—Crave It, Need It, Want It—each with a different inspiration and finish. The new skins have roots in fashion, borrowing inspiration from iconic pieces like the Gucci moto jacket, Hermès Birkin bag and rockerchic leather pants, just like the designer herself, who was recently named to “The Vogue 100,” a group of influential leaders in the industry known for their distinctive taste. mooreandgiles.com

Helmed by architects Steve Johnson and Jim Favaro, the 32,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art library boasts stunning architectural touches, such as a carved ceiling, and LEED Silver certification. weho.org

Tony Duquette’s sunburst fixtures cast a twinkling glow on gray hues and silver metallic walls at the recently opened 2,200-square-foot private event space adjacent to Chicago’s Michelin star-rated Sepia. Gary Lee Partners, who designed the restaurant, was tasked with creating a sophisticated complement to the eatery’s sexy-cool interiors. The design team added stylish details, like a vintage 1910 walnut and pewter bar and an oversized antiqued gilded frame mirror that spans the back wall, which add a dramatic milieu to the versatile event space. sepiachicago.com

BIRD’S EYE VIEW Dallas-based luxury home manufacturer Allan Knight is known for its inventive mix of materials, like the natureinspired Eda Tori Chandelier, shown, that pairs hand-carved wood in a platinum gilt finish, with aged iron and delicate rose quartz. The latest from the brand includes additions to their heralded Palm Beach furniture line that marry glitzy silver leaf with modern acrylic. allan-knight.com

ARTISTIC STREAK Set a colorful table with whimsical textile designer Lulu de Kwiatkowski’s latest playful creation: a fun and flirty dinnerware and tabletop collection designed exclusively for Neiman Marcus. The line of plates, mugs, bowls and chargers is imbued with striking water-colored patterns and lively hues, hand-drawn by Lulu and riffing off the artist’s book of mixed collages, Lulu. Bursting with flora and fauna, the collection is inspired by de Kwiatkowski’s constant muse—none other than Mother Nature herself. neimanmarcus.com

FOREIGN AFFAIRS It’s the private playground for jet setters—a legendary island where infinity pools proliferate and villa staff are at the ready. Mustique is most definitely a destination where dreams are built (both metaphorically and architecturally). The island’s 74 private villas are diverse in design style: there’s the über-modern Taliesin by Canadian architect Jack Diamond; Manolo Mestre’s Mexican-influenced Sheherezade, and Japanese-styled Shogun by Arne Hasselquist. The Moorishinspired Toucan Hill, shown, took the owner 10 years to complete, from its mosaicked fountains down to its eight-star-motifs throughout. mustique-island.com

CASUAL ELEGANCE Nestled on a residential street, a few blocks off Santa Monica Boulevard, you’ll find the intimate showroom of designer Rachel Horn. Known for her effortless bohemian style, Horn’s Los Angeles shop carries her inspired line of home décor and antiques. Set up in a quaint bungalow, the space is chock-full of hand-carved case goods and intricate furnishings that hold dear spots in the designer’s heart. “My showroom is a wonderful mix of all the things that I love,” says Horn. Case in point, the one-of-a-kind starburst mirror, shown, is from an artisan in the designer’s childhood home of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. rachelhorn.com

DECORATIVE HARDWARE

Martin Grubman, P.E. Guerin

Luxe sat down with longtime p.e. guerin fixture martin grubman for an intimate look at the history, philosophy and artistry behind the brand, started by master craftsman pierre emmanuel guerin when he left France for new york city in 1857, a cache of tiny chisels and hammers in hand. over 150 years later, p.e. guerin still stands in a four-story building on jane street whose simple façade belies the exquisite custom fixtures and hardware the company creates for clients around the world. the process remains much as it was when guerin himself first established his shop, and a visit to the foundry—the only one in existence in new york city—is akin to a trip back in time.

From historical reproductions to whimsical Flights oF Fancy, Fine decorative hardware Firm p.e. guerin FaithFully creates its handcraFted masterpieces just as its Founder did beFore the turn oF the last century.

bespoke

HOW DO YOU PRESERVE THE gUERin HERiTAgE? it’s a family business, and always has been. guerin’s great grandnephew, andrew ward, runs the company, and we maintain a staff of about 60. many come to us as apprentices. the process is the same as when guerin was creating his own pieces. we still use his original tools—some are even older than the company—and when one breaks, we repair or recreate it ourselves. it’s not like we can go to the hardware store and replace it. the molds are handmade using patterns from our archive; we have an entire room full of them, stacked in boxes and on shelves from floor to ceiling. there are probably 100,000 different designs.

WAlk US THROUgH THE AcTUAl PROcESS. every piece in the shop is created, start-to-finish, by hand. we cast exclusively in sand—we go through about six tons a year—and each mold can only be used once. an impression is made in the sand using a pattern, or an actual model, and the metal is poured into the sand. that produces a raw casting, which gets hand filed and braised before going to a finish filer who smooths and refines it. after that it goes to a chaser, or chiseler, who uses chisels and hammers to re-delineate the design. the piece is polished and sent back to the chaser for more detail and texture—that’s what gives it its life-like nature—before it’s polished again, plated and patinated.

HOW MUcH cUSTOM WORk iS DOnE? a lot. one time someone came in and said, “i love hippos. can you make me a hippo faucet?” and i said, “sure!” someone else came in and said, “can you make me an elephant doorknob?” it happens all the time and no matter the request, we find a way to do it. every goofy thing you’ve ever heard of, we’ve made it. we collaborate with designers, architects and historians. guerin’s original work can still be seen in the hall of records and the villard houses in new york city, and in many historically significant buildings across the country. more current work can be found in the new york city public library—that was a restoration commission—tom Ford’s store on madison avenue and in museums.

DiScUSS YOUR cOMMiTMEnT TO cRAFT. there’s a character inherent in metal that can only be achieved by hand. you cannot accomplish it through other means. i analogize it this way: a machine-made sweater is perfect and looks just like all the other machine-made sweaters. but a handmade sweater—while not perfect—has a quality that draws you to it. it’s the same with metalwork. a hand-chased fixture possesses detail and personality and breaks up the light in a way that’s incredibly appealing. you just want to touch it. it’s a tactile aspect you get from something created by hand that you just don’t get when it’s made by a machine.

For designer Eduardo Garza, there’s more to art than simply fashioning together creative ideas: Only after ethically sourcing and personally selecting all the materials that encompass each one of his pieces does the design process begin. Miami Beach’s Avant Gallery provides the backdrop for industrial artist, furniture and yacht designer Lukasz Opalinski and his sculptural chair, Indulgence, which was created in collaboration with Oneofone. Opposite: The Design Museum Holon in Israel showcases the work of Ron Arad, one of Opalinski’s design icons.

“My work is conceived from a part of me that has no limitation or ego,” says industrial artist, furniture and yacht designer Lukasz Opalinski. And with muses like Mother Nature, the universe and the Miami coastline, there’s a world of inspiration to draw from. Focusing on fundamentals like harmony, composition and cause and effect, Opalinski—who originally hails from Kluczbork, Poland—creates fluidity between each of his talents, approaching all with a mixture of balance and unity. Whether he’s collaborating on industrial art,

In conjunction with UK-based Oneofone, Opalinski created Liquidity, a limited-edition stool made from cast aluminum inspired by a photograph of chocolate being poured out of a bowl.

developing furniture or revisiting his childhood passion—yacht design—he adheres to the principles of form and function. “I always wanted to design yachts,” he admits, “but it wasn’t until I moved to Miami that I drew my first boat.” That design showcased a new yachting experience based on the unification of his ideals. Of course for Opalinski, what matters most isn’t the applause, but rather the finale. “I’d like my style to be described as one that touches people’s hearts and drives their emotions.” lukaszopalinski.com; 786.953.4127

elemental expression

Lukasz OpaLinski What’s inspiring you now? My inspiration always refers to nature, but I’m also driven by speed, dynamics, asymmetry, breaking the rules of gravity, the forces of the universe, structural rigidity and visual aggressiveness balanced by elegance and feminine touch.

Design icons: I really appreciate the works and philosophies of a few designers I’ve learned from, like Ron Arad, Ross Lovegrove and Ken Freivokh.

Dream collaboration: I’d love to work with Ferrari/Pininfarina, Sunseeker and Norman Foster.

Favorite decorating sources: The Business Design Center and the Surface Design Show, both in London, and Avant Gallery in Miami Beach.

Trend you’re excited by: Color wise, I’ve noticed indigos and maroons. Both can be successfully applied in detailing decorative elements, and when well distributed, are capable of triggering certain positive, warm emotions.

Picasso or van Gogh? Picasso, because I enjoy the playfulness behind the colors he used, as well as his geometry. luxe interiors

For interior designer Suzanne Lovell, creating exceptional, personal spaces comes down to one important thing: using your imagination. “What we’re doing is orchestrating a visual experience,” explains Lovell, whose eponymous

Lovell’s book, Artistic Interiors: Designing with Fine Art Collections, takes readers through a dozen beautifully photographed and presented homes, from a grand Victorianstyle residence in Chicago to a glittery Beaux Arts pied-à-terre in Manhattan.

Chicago- and New York-based firms oversee renovations, custom furniture design and fabrication, millwork and art sourcing. “It’s not about the rooms, it’s about the individual space where you sit, feel and dream.” Working in tandem with a variety of artisans and craftspeople, Lovell and her team produce one-of-a-kind interior masterpieces, influenced not by trends and styles but by their clients’ own unique personas and the history of each place. “You create a language of architecture first,” says Lovell, who has worked for renowned firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, “then you bring in architectural materials, textiles and imagery.” This method, she says, is unique, and has prompted the launch of her first book, Artistic Interiors: Designing with Fine Art Collections, which debuts this fall. Says Lovell: “I love that I can share the process with others.” suzannelovellinc.com; 312.595.1980

IMAGINARY LANGUAGE

SUZANNE LOVELL Design period you find most engaging: The Bauhaus Movement, for its honest expression of materials.

Dream dinner party guests: Dries Van Noten, Marina Abramović, Olafur Eliasson, Chicago artist David Hartt and Madeleine Grynsztejn, the Pritzker director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

Favorite decorating sources: Bernd Goeckler Antiques and Studium in New York, and also Twill Textiles.

Coveted items: Pieces of Boston & Sandwich glass from my great uncle’s collection, which was the foundation of the Sandwich Glass Museum in Massachusetts, and a John Blunt portrait of my paternal great-great-great grandfather as a young boy, along with a photograph of him 90 years later.

Joseph Carini stands atop a mountain of hand-dyed and hand-woven carpets he conceptualizes into functional art forms in his New York City studio. Opposite: Carini counts Todd Merrill Antiques among his favorite spots for treasure hunting. Shown here is a vignette in the company’s 4,000-square-foot Manhattan showroom.

If you asked Joseph Carini to define the essence of a good carpet, he’d respond with three simple necessities: “Materials, craftsmanship and inspired design.” Prior to founding his New York City-based studio Carini

A silk and wool hand-knotted carpet from Carini Lang, titled Penelope, features a neutral palette and updated damask design.

Lang in 1999, the designer studied painting at New York’s National Academy and worked briefly as a dealer of 19th-century French paintings and antiques, eventually cultivating a passion for antique Asian carpets. “I was drawn to the mystery and ancient language contained in them,” he says. Since then, he’s earned a reputation among top designers and architects for producing the finest carpets using hand-spun mohair, cashmere, wool or silk, handmade vegetable and mineral dyes, and a dwindling supply of Nepalese weavers versed in artisanal crafts. His emphasis on artistry over commerce applies to his newest forays, too, which include a collection of cashmere blankets and limited edition bronze furnishings, available spring 2012. “I try to remain true to the art form I’m working in,” says Carini, “because, ultimately, I feel I’m competing with the masters of the past.” carinilang.com; 646.613.0497

MAGIC CARPET RIDE

JOSEPH CARINI Dream collaboration: I’d love to work with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards to create a carpet that captures the visual interpretation of their music and style. Of course, it would be on stage for an entire Rolling Stones tour!

Favorite decorating sources: Todd Merrill Antiques, Chelsea Guitars in the Chelsea Hotel, Westsider Rare & Used Books and Double Knot, all in New York City.

Design icon: Tom Ford, because he seems to share my interest in recapturing lost glamour from periods past.

Collection: My biggest is vintage guitars from the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s—quintessential American ones like Gibsons and Martins.

Dream dinner party guests: I’d want to create a slightly uncomfortable mix with, say, Elvis, Hunter S. Thompson, Steve McQueen, Madonna, Jackie Onassis and Muhammad Ali.

WHOLE GRAINS It’s sometimes easy to get lost in the sleek, minimalist lines of contemporary design; there’s something inherently soothing and appealing about a blank, uninterrupted surface. The drawback, however, is that there’s a very thin line between clean and sterile, and the team at Ornare had to tread it carefully. So, they paired the super modern cabinetry of their new Satyrium series with reclaimed wood on the walls and table and carefully sourced antique light pendants from Brazil to bring a warm, lived-in feel to this contemporary-meets-organic kitchen. “The idea was to give the space a real human element,” says Claudio Faria, director of Ornare Miami. “All of the natural woods make the straight, sharp shapes of the cabinetry more comfortable and homey.” A custom-made range hood and plenty of wine storage courtesy of GE Monogram coolers work to introduce a bit of stainless steel to the otherwise matte finishes used throughout, while illuminated shelves pop against their wooden backdrop for an unexpected touch.

“It’s important that every kitchen be highly personalized, from the layout and the location of the appliances to the accessories that line each drawer.” Claudio Faria, Ornare Miami Miami, FL

CLEAN WASH Nature calls—literally—in this bathroom by Dion McCarthy, Mark Kirkhart and Andrew Alper, of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara-based DesignARC. Pocketing glass doors slide away to create a seamless transition between indoors and out, offering a stunning view of the reservoir in the distance from the cozy contours of the Agape bathtub. “Absolutely every part of the room has a view of and a strong relationship to the outdoors,” says McCarthy. “We let the site dictate the texture and color palette, which brings a nice organic quality to the space.” It’s a quality that is carried through to the knotty wood bench and chair and the interesting metallic-inspired finish of the glazed, porcelain shower tiles by Tau Ceramica from Stone Source. While the bathroom is purposely spare to keep the focus on the unique materials and panoramic vistas, the designer is careful to point out how much the space accomplishes with its less-is-more credo. “It’s not the kind of minimalism you see in a museum,” says McCarthy. “There’s an effortless accessibility to it that speaks unabashedly to and about the human body.”

“I try to include a small piece of nature in all of my designs. It’s crucial to create some kind of refuge, especially in the midst of the din of city living.” Dion McCarthy, DesignARC, Inc. Los Angeles, CA

While the historic structure’s stone façade and elegant lobby evoked the grandeur of a Renaissance palazzo, the condo unit bought by his clients—a couple with two school-age children—was newly carved out of a former commercial space and “basically a box,” the designer recalls. “It had vast hallways, well-proportioned rooms and high ceilings—the way we would all live in an ideal world.” Yet, there was not a shred of original architectural detail. Gorrivan’s first challenge: to create new interior architecture that would hold its own in a building with such grand bones. “I wanted the apartment to feel classic and European, like the building itself,” he says. To that end, Gorrivan, working with contractor and interior renovation specialist Stephen Fanuka, created custom plaster crown moldings, baseboards and millwork based on early-20th-century French designs, including arched mahogany doors with custom silver-finished hardware that was designed to tarnish. “I want people to walk in and feel as if the interiors have always been there,” says Gorrivan. Besides adding architectural detail, Gorrivan optimized the space, borrowing square footage from an oversize entry gallery to create a home office and laundry room, and reconfiguring closets in the master

bedroom to allow for a separate dressing room. The kitchen, which initially “wasn’t going to get touched at all,” ended up completely re-done, with new cabinets stretching to the ceiling to maximize storage space. Likewise, the master bath, which was rather too glitzy for the couple, was entirely re-thought. Now donning a black-and-white palette with Art Deco sconces and floors made of solid slabs of Thassos marble, it harks back to the building’s pre-war origins. Unlike typical pre-war apartments, which were, as Gorrivan puts it, “chopped up into small rooms,” this one has no formal dining room, but instead features an enormous main living space—about 40 feet long and 20 feet wide with 12-foot ceilings. Gorrivan calls it a “salon” rather

than a living room, and it epitomizes another important goal of the redesign: to create comfortable, relaxed quarters for family living as well as stylish space for entertaining. “It’s a living room, family room and dining room all in one. On a school night, the children could be working on computers or watching TV. The whole family can be in that room doing different things at the same time. The salon serves spectacularly for large cocktail events; a contemporary round table tucked in a corner, with classic chairs by Robsjohn-Gibbings, seats eight for intimate dinner parties.

counter culture The builder’s kitchen was completely revamped with custom cabinetry, black absolute honed slab countertops sourced by builder Stephen Fanuka and grass-cloth walls. “I take a maximalist approach to decorating, without going over the top,” says Gorrivan. “Every surface has some sort of treatment or texture, even if it’s subtle.”

c o n t i n u e d f r o m p a g e 130

In selecting furnishings, Gorrivan balanced comfort and elegance. A showstopping borne in the entry foyer, covered in metallic linen, is reminiscent of the early 20th century, setting the tone for the apartment. Two antique French pieces—a Louis XVI-style console and an 18th-century commode—stand against walls covered in a subtle checkerboard grass cloth, which brings their formality down a notch. In the salon, floor-to-ceiling drapes and tailored sofas covered in uncut velvet are supplemented by striking accent pieces, like Holly Hunt’s mirrored console, that capture the spirit of New York in the Art Deco era.

window dressing The only existing architectural interest in the apartment comes from steel-framed multi-paned windows. Twelve-foot-long floor-to-ceiling drapes manufactured from Bergamo taffeta enhance the drama. The round table is Ironies from Jerry Pair, and the chairs are Robsjohn-Gibbings.

blue print Luxurious textures in the master bedroom—a silk carpet, a headboard upholstered in Highland Court cut velvet, Holly Hunt chairs upholstered in Rogers & Goffigon linen, and Highland Court satin draperies—establish an atmosphere of serenity and comfort. The artwork is by Teo González.

The salon’s walls have a subtly mottled Venetian plaster finish by Jonas Everets Design in New York City; the kitchen and master bedroom walls are grass cloth, elephant gray and aqua respectively, for “quiet texture.” Punches of red, from the Jimmy Ernst painting in the salon and a pair of Christian Liaigre chairs with cut-out backs to the crimson banquette in the kitchen, where the family takes most of its meals, make the apartment feel friendly, Gorrivan says. “Red is a very powerful color. Unlike orange or acid green, which are also strong colors that make a statement, red is very classic and not a trendy color at all.” Like all the design decisions in the apartment, Gorrivan adds, “It’s a reflection of the homeowners—sophisticated but not overly formal or grand.” L

The designer and his team quickly embarked on what would be a yearlong project, taking stock of the homeowner’s existing furnishings and determining what to acquire and what to edit out, ultimately combining vintage and contemporary furniture pieces, several significant pieces of art and sculpture, a variety of textured wallcoverings and a few pieces of Jeffers’ own design.

Draperies, several pieces of contemporary art, industrial metal shelving, and a wall color here and there stayed put. On Jeffers’ extensive shopping list went a pair of 1940s Grosfeld House wing chairs with scrolled arms, a pair of curved reproduction benches from Coup d’Etat, additional pieces of art such as a large canvas by Tom Lieber, and a contemporary walnut console by Hudson Furniture with a large oval cutout that became the centerpiece of the main foyer.

Throughout the process, Jeffers says he tried to remain true to one of his signatures: blending a mixture of objects and furniture that together suggest they’ve been collected over time, a technique he says “gives a home soul.” Case in point: the unique and dramatic chord Jeffers struck in the dining room, a square space into which he introduced curved forms including the wing chairs and curved benches, as well as a contemporary round table with bronze legs by Therien Studio Workshops.

Several rooms, including the dining room and living room, are visible from the foyer on the main floor, where Jeffers says it was important to unite the décor under a single color scheme. Drawing on his client’s tastes, he chose a neutral palette of gray, taupe and brown and selected upholstery and fabrics from Rogers and Goffigon, Holland & Sherry and Osborne & Little. Shots of color—a pair of coral-colored lamps, a persimmon-colored trim detail sewn onto draperies—were then added. In a tiny alcove off the main foyer, Jeffers paired reupholstered tufted chairs with a table made of petrified wood, a metal sculpture of a satchel by Topher Delaney, and an eye-catching painting of a barn by Michael Gregory, which appears to float in the air above the seating.

“in love, as in gluttony,” said the writer italo calvino wryly,

“pleasure is a matter of precision.”

Had he been alive to witness the erecting of this Los Angeles-area estate, he might have added architecture and design to the list. “At a glance it looks like a simple design,” observes Marc Welch, project architect for the Landry Design Group, which designed the buildings. “But the attention to detail that went into it to make everything line up perfectly is of the highest quality.”

The home alternates stucco-clad block forms with pitched roof-topped glass spaces—basically “a rhythm of solid and void relationships,” Welch explains. Another major conceptual element punctuating the structures is “a modern interpretation of remnants of old stone walls,” much like those one passes through in ancient cities, where fragments of ramparts are poignant reminders of the structures that once encircled them. These impart a mysterious, timeless quality to the setting. The clients, says the firm’s principal Richard Landry, are a couple with homes all over the world. “Here, they wanted a very transparent, open floor plan that took advantage of the California weather,” he adds. That’s one reason the home is long and not terribly deep from front to back; rear-facing rooms open completely to the outdoors, providing

The home is so pristine that floor levels could not vary more than one-quarter inch throughout. Interior designer James Magni even prevailed upon CaesarStone— manufacturer of the monumental slabs of quartz surfacing that run underfoot—to minimize grout lines, an entirely new installation technique for that company. vertical interior and exterior accents was hand-chiseled by more than 100 workmen in China to appear “raked,” says builder John Finton. “It was incredibly complicated and would have been economically impossible in Europe,” he concedes. Ditto with miles of tempered glass banisters, the compound radii of which were so hard to achieve that they kept breaking during the firing process. “The freestanding main staircase, which is clad in CaesarStone with a steel substructure,” adds Finton, “was one of the more difficult staircases we’ve ever built.”

Magni and his senior designer, Christina Craemer, also forged an exacting precision of their own to conjure interior spaces meticulously tailored to their clients’ needs and desires. Part of this involved helping these avid collectors connect with local artists to assemble specially commissioned works for the home. “She went to all their studios and met with them for hours,” says Magni of the wife. This resulted in a highly personal collection. To wit: The 15-foot-long painting in the dining room, observes Craemer, is inspired by drifting dunes because the homeowners were raised in a desert climate. Though they love the casual California lifestyle, explains Craemer, the clients are very fashionable and “used to more formally designed spaces. So the interior is more high-style than what people think of as California design.” In contrast to the 1950s case study aesthetic of many LA-area residences, the living room here is a richly textured space,

filled with plush leathers, hides and high-polish woods. “You can’t get any more custom,” says Craemer. “Nothing here is off the shelf.” The all-white dining room has to host intimate lunches as well as large receptions. So the designers adapted Magni’s Jewel table dining surface that pulls apart or together as needed. It’s that kind of immaculate, impeccable precision that defines the house. No gluttony here, though there certainly is love (specifically for rigorous design). And of course, there are plenty of pleasures, too. L

“The bones of the home were amazing, and we were in awe of all of the details that were still in place from the original architecture,” says Jill, “but we really wanted to go in and refine it. Our main goal was to modernize it and make the living spaces about family and fun. We wanted it to feel sophisticated but not pretentious.” Luckily, though, the Schlenkers didn’t

have to look very far back into their own personal history to find just the right person for the job: Houston-based interior designer Laura Umansky had just put the finishing touches on the couple’s previous abode. “We had just completed a remodel on another home,” laughs Jill, “but it was a matter of finding the right house and the right feeling. When we saw the property, we knew it was the one. It had plenty of space for the children to play, gorgeous rows of trees and a sense of outdoor living that’s hard to find.” Umansky, however, was more concerned with what awaited her inside the stately residence. While she was smitten with the stunning parquet floors throughout, which are original to the home, she knew the dark, two-room kitchen was far from a perfect fit for her party-loving clients. “I wanted to be as true to the original layout and materials of the home as possible,

checkered past The pool pavilion is the Schlenker’s favorite place to entertain. holding court The serene grounds were one of the major factors for the homeowners when deciding to hunker down in the Houston estate. “We envisioned utilizing the whole lawn space, with its English rose gardens and fountains,” says Jill. “We could imagine our whole family out there, running around.”

but I also needed to create a fresh space for the young family,” says Umansky. “As I walked through the home with Calvin and Jill for the first time, I envisioned light, elegant rooms with a bit of whimsy.” So, down came the walls in the kitchen, giving way to a large, bright space with white lacquered cabinets and an adjoining breakfast room, whose fanciful rug and purple art glass chandelier bring an unexpected pop of color to morning meals. And out went the delicate antiques that had for so long kept the house rooted in the 1930s, in favor of a look that’s decidedly more Old Hollywood glamour, as opposed to just old. To accomplish this, Umansky mixed midcentury staples with pieces that were more traditional in shape and form, opting for unusual fabrics and textures to bring the latter up to date. Mixed metallic tones liven up the warm whites and pewter tones in

the formal living room, while graphic checkered floors in the pool pavilion are the perfect backdrop for bold upholstery choices. The result is a home that has all of the charm of Staub’s original design, with a healthy dose of the homeowners’ personalities injected in for good measure. “They are such a fun family,” says Umansky. “And I think we were definitely able to show that in the home.” It wasn’t all fun and games, though; John Calloway, of Houston-based Calloway Custom Builders, had his work cut out for him. The residence’s plaster walls had to be fastidiously opened up, patched and replaced to make way for the miles and miles of new electrical wiring brought in to power the flat-screen televisions and new age gadgets; the kitchen had to be completely restructured; and the handsome antique-finished

mirror tiles in the master bathroom kept cracking as they were fitted to the wall. But in the end, Calloway admits it was worth it: “Laura absolutely had a direction and a vision. She did a great job blending the old with the new, and that’s exactly what the house needed.” And he isn’t the only one enamored with the completed project (and the woman behind it). “It was beyond what I expected,” Jill explains. “Laura remembered every comment we made and every little thing was just right—from the doorknobs to the light fixtures. It was amazing to see it all come together. It’s our dream house.” L

At least that’s how architect Stuart L. Disston

envisioned it when a New York couple, wanting to ensure that their empty nest would be brimming with family on weekends, asked him to transform the 1980s wood-clad beach house they purchased into an ultra-modern, über-fun gathering place. “When you are in it, you are at sea,” says the owner.

And so began a major two-year renovation. Disston, partner at Austin Patterson Disston Architects in Quogue, New York, drew up plans for the design, taking inspiration from the wife, who has general affinities for stone over wood, New York City lofts and rooftop nightclubs. What resulted was uncharted territory for the architect. “We’re known for more traditional work,” says Disston, who helmed the renovation with project manager Josh Rosensweig. “The owners introduced us to some modern exterior skin systems. They were the perfect clients for this.” To clad the structure, the owner specified the use of stucco and terra cotta: “I wanted to use materials that were impervious to the elements,” the husband says. Restricted by building codes to keep the envelope of the original structure, Disston created volume by gutting the middle and installing 16-foot-high glass structural fin walls on either side of the two-story living room, affording views of both bodies of water simultaneously—ergo the “at sea” feeling. “Because of the huge windows, you can stand on the north deck and see the ocean, or you can stand on the south deck and see the bay,” the architect says. Furthermore, Disston deliberately obscured views of the neighboring beach village by installing semi-opaque alabaster material and clerestory windows on the north end, providing the sensation when inside of traveling by boat in a southerly direction.

Inside, pops of color are the exception in the primarily neutral color scheme. The couple have been long-time friends and clients of New York City-based designers Stephen B. Jacobs and Andi Pepper, so they called on them to keep things ultra-minimalist but inviting. “There’s a softness that contrasts the rectilinear qualities; it isn’t minimalism in its traditional sense,” Jacobs says. In the living area, the severity of the cube-like space is softened with a fireplace wall upholstered in cream-colored Ultrasuede. “It counteracts the noise and hardness,” says design principal Pepper, who, along with project manager Vaishali Singh, directed the interior design for the project. The S-shaped Vladimir Kagan sofa further softens the room, and takes its color cue from the Mondrian-esque tri-color floor pattern designed by Pepper, who is also a trained artist. The fun continues upstairs, with a backlit onyx bar leading to a cozy lounge area off to the ocean side, where the wife, who’s learning to be a DJ, entertains on the turntables. “We added more gold upstairs,” says Pepper of the lounge’s gilded shades that reflect the living areas downstairs. Opposite the lounge and overlooking the bay side is a spacious deck outfitted with white Dedon furnishings from Janus et Cie that are easily—and often—moved to create a rooftop dance floor; the full moon its perfect disco ball. wa r m t h : e v e r y h o m e o w n e r c r a v e s i t , but when your new place has floor-to-ceiling, steel-rimmed windows and your husband has a thing for edgy iron furnishings, the bar is set a little higher.

This Gold Coast home is set a little higher, too. The owners, a newly empty-nester couple, made two life-changing decisions at once. One: to swap their single-family Lincoln Park house for a three-bedroom apartment high up in a sophisticated new building designed by Booth Hansen. And two: to change their look from modernist, kid-friendly furnishings to something elegant and very grown-up. That necessitated a third decision—to call on longtime family friend Julia Edelmann to midwife the birth of their new life. It was a good thing Edelmann knew the family so well, because otherwise the couple’s divergence of opinion might have been a little daunting. “My husband loves an industrial look but I like a cozier feel,” says the wife, mother of two twenty-something children. “For me, even the architecture here had to be warmed up. When my husband said he really wanted to buy this modern apartment I worried that it would be a little too stark.” So why buy it? Because the solution was already on the family’s speed dial. Besides being a friend, Edelmann is also a nationally celebrated designer whose dazzling, high-end projects all have one

“The first challenge was the huge columns in the middle of the living space. They were raw concrete, and very cold,” says Edelmann. “I called in faux painter Patrick Rouillier to give them a subtle mottled treatment to create the illusion that they’re smaller than they really are.” She then sheathed the open plan living space’s walls in a luscious Donghia grass cloth, “because it has a three-dimensional quality. You get a lot of movement when you look at these walls. We needed something strong, but not distracting, to balance the fantastic city views.” One by one, Edelmann ticked off the rooms where the architectural mood needed a little firing up. The kitchen got a bigger island, more conducive to gathering family and friends, as well as a show-stopping wall of ceramic and glass tile in a whimsical modern pattern. Edelmann designed it to bring out the color of the new countertops and the Poggenpohl cabinets. And the master bath was completely gutted and refitted with sumptuous marble and rich silvery-gray tiles.

Astonishingly, the total redo took less than six months. As the homeowner admiringly puts it, “Julia is talented, agreeable—and fast!” The speed of decision-making was the more remarkable given that the owners reused only a handful of pieces from their previous home. “Here they wanted furniture that was a little dressier, more timeless,” Edelmann says. So in came a dining room table custom designed with a lacquered ebony finish, and an elegant Dennis & Leen dining room chandelier that Edelmann says she chose to juxtapose “modern sleek against formal decadence.” A self-confessed “fabric addict,” Edelmann says she also thought it was important to have lots of texture and pattern. She went so as far as to use two different fabrics (minimum!) on every upholstered piece in the

ROYAL TREATMENT Malaysian-born fashion designer Zang Toi is a household naMe aMong red-carpeT favoriTes,

HigH Style It’s fitting that Zang Toi’s fashion atelier is dubbed “House of Toi.” It is, after all, where the designer crafts his luxury couture collections that, unbeknownst to many, bear striking similarities to his Upper East Side pied-à-terre. “There’s an element of glamour that shows in both my home design and fashion line,” Toi says. Inspired by Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, Toi tested his creative prowess when he set out to revamp an early-20th-century apartment with preciously detailed antiques and opuFashion veteran Valentino created these peep-toe pumps with raised black embroidery atop cream leather to mimic a lace finish. lent textures. Much like his runway creations, it’s the well-articulated details—silver leaf, crystal accents, a two-tone palette that was implemented to mimic the appearance of a black and white photograph—that define Toi’s work. When asked what the fashion equivalent is to his home, Toi says, “I see it as a glamorous black and white gown with silver beading, worn by a modern-day Marie Antoinette.” houseoftoi.com

parisian persuasion Enamored with French styles, fashion designer Zang Toi transformed an early-20th-century New York City apartment into his personal Parisian-inspired retreat. Posh accents in the sitting room, such as a custom silver-fox rug, antique Baccarat chandelier and portraits of Marie Antoinette by artist Natasha Zupan, pop against high-gloss white walls. More of Toi’s home can be seen in the book American Fashion Designers at Home, available through Assouline (assouline.com).

COLOR THEORY THE CREATIVE FORCE BEHIND REBEL-CHIC FASHION HOUSE LIBERTINE HAS A HIDDEN AFFINITY FOR INTERIORS, MADE EVIDENT IN THE MODERN TRANSFORMATION OF HIS RUSTIC LOS ANGELES BUNGALOW.

REFASHIONED APPROACH Fans of Johnson Hartig’s lauded eco-friendly fashion label Libertine revel in his ability to turn tired vintage clothing into couture ensembles. So, it comes as no surprise that Hartig’s eye for refashioning antiques seems to effortlessly translate to interiors, too. “I love collecting, being resourceful, mixing things up and surprising people,” Hartig says. Such was his method when he set out to design A solid piece of wood forms the band for this unique cuff, complete with a 14-karat gold accent with spinel and white coral charms. 14K YG Spinel & Coral Cuff, $6,950; devillefinejewelry.com

his Los Angeles home, incorporating a mix of vintage and modern pieces, vibrant Damien Hirst paintings and graphic black and white fabrics. Rules rarely apply to the self-taught designer, who often finds inspiration in the unexpected and pays little attention to trends, which explains, Hartig says, why the evolution of his interiors is as constant as his couture collections. “My home, like Libertine, is always a work in progress.” ilovelibertine.com

Design Tip: Go wild, edit and try as many combinations as you need until something jumps out.

Sneak Peek: I’m in a ’70s mood for spring 2012. It’s an era that made a big impression on me, even as a kid decorating my bedroom.

Interior Insight: I like to make sure every room has one great antique piece as an anchor, and then I work from there.

Part of ABC Carpet’s Color Reform collection, this antique, hand-woven rug was over-dyed in Turkey to give it a deep, saturated color. Purple Color Reform Vintage Rug, $2,999; abccarpet.com

Up Next: I was approached before to design a line for the home and wasn’t ready. Now, I think I am.

Johnson Hartig’s fall collection for Libertine is reminiscent of works of art, specifically, he says, “post-World War German expressionistic prints. We took a small area and blew it up to get the look we were going for.” 198 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

paint the town The living room of fashion designer Johnson Hartig’s 1920s Los Angeles bungalow boasts a smorgasbord of colors and styles, all set against a white-painted shell and rustic wooden roof. A color-saturated painting by Damien Hirst centers a wall of art, while an oversized Lucite table and graphic chairs add modernity. Hartig’s home was featured in the book American Fashion Designers at Home, available through Assouline (assouline.com).

STAYING POWER FROM THE EARLY CREATION OF DIANE VON FURSTENBERG’S ICONIC WRAP DRESS TO THE INTRODUCTION OF HER ANTICIPATED LINE OF HOME DÉCOR, IT SEEMS THERE’S NOTHING THE RESPECTED STYLE ARBITER CAN’T TACKLE.

BRANCHING OUT It’s little known that Diane von Furstenberg’s passion for interior design stretches as far back as the 1980s, when, while lovers of the DVF brand were admiring her revival of figure-flattering dresses, she released a series of books on home décor. “I love the balance between color, texture, pattern and proportion that can exist in both fashion and the home,” she says. Often acclaimed Turkish jewelry designer Sevan Biçakçi crafted this ornate ring with 24-karat gold, white, yellow and cognac diamonds and pink tourmaline cabochons. R3028, $9,887; barneys.com

for her liberal use of pattern and color, it seemed a natural transition for von Furstenberg to later debut lines of homeware and textiles. Most recently, von Furstenberg channeled her expert sense of interior design in a series of suites for the venerable Claridge’s hotel in London. “My aim was to respect the legendary glamour of the hotel, while incorporating pieces that beautifully illustrate my passion for pattern, texture and travel.” dvf.com

Muse: I am always inspired by women, nature and the 20th century. For me, these sources are timeless.

Design Tip: Have fun with textures, large prints, florals and stripes in ways that make you feel beautiful, but comfortable.

Philosophy: I design clothes that I love and that I think women will feel beautiful wearing. The same applies to my home products.

Interior Insight: Use boldly patterned wallpaper, bedding and rugs with calculated purpose. These should be focal points in a room.
