IDA KOHLMEYER American/New Orleans, 1912-1997

Neal Auction has played an important role in developing the marketplace for works by beloved New Orleans artist Ida Kohlmeyer. Kohlmeyer graduated with a master’s degree in drawing and painting from Newcomb Art School in 1956 and studied in New York with the abstract expressionist painter Hans Hofmann. Hofmann had a significant impact on Kohlmeyer’s work, encouraging her to abandon figurative painting in favor of abstraction. The artist’s iconic abstract paintings are rooted in her own distinctive visual language of various shapes and symbols and characterized by exuberance of color and motion. Neal Auction holds the current record price for the artist of $110,250 achieved for “Cluster #1” in September of 2015. Photograph courtesy of the Estate of Ida Kohlmeyer

GEORGE RODRIGUE

A quintessentially Louisiana artist, George Rodrigue broke through the boundaries of regionalism with his iconic Blue Dog to become a great American artist with international renown. Born and raised in New Iberia, Louisiana, Rodrigue captured on his canvases what he feared was his fading Cajun heritage - including its land, people, traditions and mythology. In the early 1990s, his Blue Dog series, based on the French-Cajun loup-garou legend, catapulted Rodrigue to global fame while remaining rooted in the milieu of Louisiana. Neal Auction holds the current record price for Rodrigue for the monumental Blue Dog canvas “Chairman of the Board” sold in April of 2015 for $173,280. In April of 2019, Neal Auction also achieved the record price (third overall) for Rodrigue’s Cajun series with the sale of “The Class of Marie Courrege” for $152,500. Neal Auction continues to be the worldwide market leader for sales of George Rodrigue artwork.
