Bohemian Elegance: Eclectic Furniture and Art from the Estate of

Mario Villa

Featuring original and collected works from the home of highly acclaimed New Orleans artist, furniture maker, designer, and collector Mario Villa (1953-2021). Mario Villa was a Nicaraguan-born, New Orleans-based artist and designer who produced sleek Neoclassical-inspired furniture and jewelry with a modern flair. His distinctive designs were highly sought-after and acquired by high-profile clients such as Princess Caroline of Monaco, Kevin Costner, and Carol Burnett. Villa’s collection, from his historic home on Bayou St. John in New Orleans, is an eclectic array of stylish original Mario Villa furniture, fine European religious paintings, antique European furniture, and many works of art by his own contemporaries in New Orleans. The extravagant interior of his home was overflowing with objet d’arts, paintings, sculpture, furniture, decorative arts, and other wares that beautifully highlighted the artist’s own rich Latin American heritage.

Exhibition will be held at our 4038 Magazine Street Gallery, May 9, 10 am to 4 pm ~ May 10, 10 am to 7 pm.

Auction begins May 12 at 11 a.m. on all three bidding platforms.

M

ario Villa, acclaimed artist, designer, and beloved New Orleanian, passed away at the age of 68 on August 4, 2021. Renowned for his unparalleled furniture and jewelry designs and a sophisticated worldly style rooted in classical history, the New York Times spiritedly described him in 1991 as “an exuberant fellow who with a few dollars and some gold swags could probably transform a 7-Eleven into a nightclub.” Villa’s design career spanned nearly four decades, and he accrued an illustrious list of clients including European royalty and Hollywood veterans like Carol Burnett, Joanne Woodward, Princess Diane de Bourbon of Paris, and Princess Caroline of Monaco. In 1990, the Chicago Tribune reported that Princess Margaret was so taken by his distinctive style that she nudged editors at the prestigious London-based publication World of Interiors to check him out, which resulted in a four-page spread in their November 1987 issue. Villa’s furniture has been featured in many esteemed public interiors, such as Saks Fifth Avenue window displays, high-end restaurants in New York and Los Angeles, and VIP lounges for Delta Airlines. In 1989, Villa collaborated with the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who would later become creative director of Chanel, on the interior redesign of Bloomingdale’s flagship store in Manhattan. Villa was born in Managua, Nicaragua in 1953 surrounded by art. His father, architect Julio Villa, was a collector of Mexican masters, German Expressionism, and Pre-Columbian art, which undoubtedly contributed to his artistic oeuvre. From an early age, Villa began painting and sculpting—covering the walls of his bedroom with paintings inspired by his childhood fascination with archaeology and his own imagination. Villa and his family fled Nicaragua during the Sandinista revolution of the mid-1970s and resettled in the United States. As a young man, Villa traveled extensively throughout Europe and studied at the University of Bath in England. Having already fallen in love with New Orleans on a family vacation as a child, when Villa returned to the United States, he chose New Orleans as his homebase. He earned a degree in anthropology from the University of New Orleans in 1976 and subsequently a degree in architecture from Tulane University in 1981. During his studies, he opened a gallery in the French Quarter in a converted garage, showcasing his art alongside works by newcomer artists. One of the first contemporary art galleries in New Orleans, he eventually moved the gallery to Magazine Street, where it operated until 2004 and remained dedicated to exhibiting up-and-coming artists.

During the early days of his gallery, Villa began experimenting with furniture designs, driven by a desire to create something practical from his artistic sculptures. He soon began to receive commissions from local clients and businesses attracted to his uniquely modern and classical patinated metal pieces. ‘’I love patinas and anything with classical connotations. I love very much history, Greek, Roman, Egyptian feelings. We romantics want to make the past come alive,” he told the Chicago Tribune in 1990. Villa used classical motifs derived from ancient forms, along with inspiration drawn from artists like Matisse and Picasso, applied to his streamlined metal furniture and home wares. He treated metals with muriatic acid to achieve color and patina variation and utilized old-world techniques like sgraffito to enhance material textures. Among his works that display this exceptional blend of ancient and modern design and craftsmanship are the exterior lighting sconces decorated with metal palm fronds that flank the entrance to the Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans, where he was recently honored in memoriam at their 2022 annual fundraiser. Described by many of his contemporaries as a true New Orleans bohemian, Mario Villa embraced artistic sensibility not only in his work, but in his everyday life. Every nook and cranny of his historic Faubourg St. John home, built in 1801, was creatively adorned with one of his creations or a carefully collected piece of art or antique furniture. In the 1990 Chicago Tribune profile, Villa poignantly explained: “Art should be part of everyday life, like brushing your teeth,’’ he said. “Some ask, is this a table or a piece of sculpture?

It is a piece of sculpture you can eat on. I make furniture with a human scale. I try to keep it small. I am very much against mass-produced.

Everything I do is handmade-with all the human errors-and it’s signed. I want to reach the public in a very personal way.’’
