VERNACULAR & OUTSIDER ART Neal Auction is pleased to present its inaugural dedicated Vernacular & Outsider Art Auction. This sale brings together a wide range of art by Self-Taught, Outsider and Visionary artists, many of them from the American South, who created or continue to create bodies of work beyond the boundaries of the academic art world. These artists transcend genres through vernacular visual expressions uniquely tied to their state of mind, culture and environment. The items offered in this sale are each part of original bodies of work inspired by the artists’ personal and emotional experiences, and yet they also convey universal themes of life with universal appeal. While many of the artists included in the auction have ties to Louisiana and the South, their common connection is one of form, vivid palette and narrative. From Clementine Hunter’s depictions of life on Melrose Plantation to Jimmy Lee Sudduth’s imaginative figures to Hart McNee’s rare works delivering a social commentary on New Orleans, the artwork captivates through its unconventional media, subject matter and creative expression. Widely considered the foremost auctioneer in the sale of 19th and 20th century southern regional art and material culture, Neal Auction has a long history of record-breaking results for Vernacular and Outsider artists. By bringing these works together in a curated annual sale, we look forward to further highlighting these artists and providing an opportunity for established and new collectors to explore this flourishing market.

All lots are available for preview in our New Orleans Magazine Street gallery beginning January 3, 2022.

Note: John William “Uncle Jack” Dey was born in Phoebus, Virginia in 1912 and spent his childhood in the state before traveling to Maine in 1932 to work as a trapper and logger for several years. He returned to Richmond, where he eventually joined the police force around 1942. Dey served on the force for almost thirteen years and earned the affectionate nickname “Uncle Jack” from the neighborhood children, whose toys and bicycles he often repaired. He started to paint after retiring from the police in 1955, using model airplane paint to create images inspired by his own life adventures, religion and imagined exotic landscapes. Dey’s ability to convey a story, his strong sense of color and composition and flair for the dramatic are clearly displayed in his body of work. He did not hesitate to punish people or animals he did not like in his creations by portraying them as subjects of his own unique acupuncture - pitchfork style. He imbued some of his compositions with a sense of foreboding by including hovering black crows, often counter-balanced by a row of equally sweet bunnies. The work offered here has all of these traits and more, as three generously proportioned nude Amazons stab bewildered bleeding bears in a forest, under the watchful gaze of crows and bunnies. 33

Note: “When I paint fish, it’s about Uncle Bud. When I paint cotton, it’s about my papa, who was a sharecropper in Wilmer. When I paint about the school bus, that’s my Mom. I paint about family, and I have a lot of stories to tell about my family.” -Ruth Robinson Ruth Robinson grew up in Grand Bay, Alabama, where early in life she discovered a talent for painting. Unfortunately, a house fire in the 1960s destroyed her creations which led to her giving up painting for several decades before her passion was revived in the early 2000s. While initially a personal and private endeavor, Robinson was encouraged by her mother on her deathbed to start selling her works. Since then, Robinson’s paintings have been exhibited throughout the country and can be found in the American Folk Art Gallery in Asheville, the Kentuck Art Center in Northport, Alabama and in other private and public collections. Robinson’s works are deeply personal and often showcase daily scenes of her family life, much like the work on offer here entitled “Dinner Under the Big Tree” which features figures partaking in various scenes of leisure - conveying a world of harmony and familial contentment. Note: Daniel Pressley created wood reliefs, sculptures and paintings that address the breadth and complexities of the urban African American experience. Born in South Carolina where his family had a farm, Pressley’s father was shot and killed by a white neighbor when he was young. Shortly afterwards, his mother also died, and he moved with his siblings to Ohio. Pressley later lived in New York City during the 1960s, where he started to carve and paint images that dealt with his experiences from his youth and as a Black man in Harlem. Even though he experienced firsthand the effects of racism, drug abuse and poverty, Pressley’s powerful carvings, such as the one on offer here, often display spontaneous moments of joy, particularly through music, singing and dancing.
