DELEGATE COMMITTEE REPORTS 2014

State Officer Campaign Committee: Claire Endres (Carrington) and Casey Ricker (Kindred) Committee Members: 26 members and one advisor Members present: Brooke Plorin (Towner), Breann Oritsch (Belfield), Tanner Berger (Center), Chase Jacobson (Divide County), Billy Zottnick (Edgeley/Kulm), Dylan Rudolph (Gackle/Streeter), Samantha Lies (Garrison), Mathew Emter (Glen Ullin), Brian Richardson (Hebron), Megan Whetham (Jamestown) Tayler Mau (Kenmare), Greg Lahlum (LaMoure), Chasely Houser (McClusky), Madeline Solemsaas (Mohall), Dylan Rue (New Rockford), John Mayer (Nothern Cass), Brittany Roney (Oakes/SC), Ellie Krupich (Richland 44), Mariah Portra (TL-M), Conner Lynch (Williston), and Emily Lothspeich (Wyndmere) Advisor Present: Mr. Schneider (Napoleon) Date and location of meeting: June 3 convened in the north eastern delegate chairs in Bentson Bunker field house at 10:00 and concluded at 10:51 Report: The committee discussed the raising state officers Campaign budget and if donations should be counted towards that amount. The Campaign Committee discussed the importance of having at least one past state FFA officer in attendance to help the Selection Committee understand the duties and dedications of a state FFA office. The committee discussed setting up a designated time for the candidates to meet and talk to the delegates. The campaign committee discussed the clarification, use of bolding and italicizing, and bulleting the State FFA Officer Handbook section pertaining to the election process. The committee discussed the use of wrist bands to identify the delegate from the other FFA members. The committee discussed the use of an identifying marker to distinguish the state officer candidates. The delegation deliberated on the screening committee speeches, their clarification, their purpose, and their presentation. The committee discussed that the state officer candidates share a short response about themselves after their introduction. Action Recommended: Whereas there was confusion on if donations counted towards a state officer’s campaign budget, therefore be it resolved that the amount a state officer can contribute to his or her budget be set at 100 dollars and that donations do not count towards the 100 dollar limit. Whereas there has been an absence of past state officers on the state officer screening committee, therefore be it resolved that the state push for past state officers 5 years out of the position and with no relations to any one running to be a member of the screening committee. Whereas there is no appointed time for the candidates to meet with the delegates, therefore be it resolved that a time be set aside after the screening committee has made its nominations for the state officer candidates to allow the delegates to speak with the candidates. Whereas there is some confusion in the formatting of the section of the ND State FFA officer handbook titled Officer Elections, therefore be it resolved that the section be clarified by the use of bolding, underlining, or italicizing important parts. Whereas there is confusion on what the rules for campaigning are, therefore let it be resolved that a bulleted list be added outlining the rules, restrictions, methods, and locations that the campaigning can take place. Whereas there is confusion on what is meant in the State Officer Handbook pertaining to speeches, therefore be it resolved that the 3 minute speech given to the officer screening committee be on the topic of FFA to a service organization and the second speech be a 2 minute nomination speech given during a general convention session if the candidate is nominated by the committee.

State Officers Retiring Address’s ‘Rolling with the Punches’ Charles Steinberger, State President What has more lives than a cat, a frog, because it croaks ever night. Now that I have your attention, I will begin. While I was growing up, my brothers and I grew up on stories of boxing that my Grandpa Larry told us. When our Grandpa wasn’t around and we had free time, we would watch Rocky. Rocky Bal Boa was our idol at the time. He would take a beating but still continue the match. He was so awesome, just running around yelling stuff and punching meat. But during his matches he would sometimes win and sometimes he would lose. The thing that he always did was to roll with the punches. One punch that Apollo Creed landed on Rocky quite a bit was a jab. Everyday we face jabs in our lives. Every one who has an incredibly unique last name faces this challenge everyday. I know that in High school I was rarely called by my last name. I remember at one FFA judging event my sophomore year that I was called Charles Steinberg. It was a minuscule issue that I faced, but it was frustrating. I can recall several mispronunciations that I have heard: Steinbergen, Steinbacher, and Steenberg are the most common. These are just nothing. That is what a jab is. A punch that is just a frustrating blow. Nothing more then a pointless punch, because it wont let you get into a rhythm. If you let these jabs continue to disrupt your rhythm you can’t be who you really are; a champion. Rocky probably had the fight of his life against Clubber Lang. Rocky wasn’t prepared for this fight. He was too preoccupied with the past, in which he learned that he fought second-rate boxers. Spoiler alert: He lost the first match with Lang. This situation sort of happened to me this year. I was at the Capitol in Washington D.C. Mikayla, Representative Cramer, and I were talking about the FFA and the benefits of this great organization when he asked for a photo to tweet. We take the photo, cause lets face it I am extremely good looking. After the photo he asked for our twitter handles. I put my head in my hands. I was so embarrassed that I had to tell him my twitter handle. I did what anyone who wanted to save face does; say it really fast. Chucknasty 164. He didn’t hear it, but his aides sure did hear it and laughed. So Representative Cramer asked again, I had to repeat it, chucknasty 164. I was so embarrassed. I could hardly believe what I had just said to our Representative in halls that Abraham Lincoln and other have walked. What was I thinking when I made my twitter account. The moral of this story is that what you do in the past can bite you in the butt, if it is a twitter handle or learning that you were set up to box poor boxers like Rocky did. Throughout my travels this year I have met quite a few students from across the nation. These students have become my friends, and I think of them every day. One student sticks out the most to me; he is what I believe what FFA truly means. He was shy when I first met him. He didn’t come from a farming background, but he gave the FFA a shot. It was the best thing he has ever done. He has grown through the FFA by attending leadership conferences. By grown, I mean he was able to talk in front of the 101 group without hesitation. A little background on him, last year I could barely get him to say his name so I could talk to him. This confidence boost, I believe is from when a random stranger bought him a jacket. It gave him a feeling that he belonged to something that is over 580,000 members strong and is growing every day. This student went round for round and landed a huge victory with the FFA. His journey from the kid around the corner to the heavy Champion of the Kenmare FFA Chapter is so similar to Balboa’s that its not funny. In all the movies, Rocky seems to be knocked down. The punch that does it is always a haymaker or a south paw. In life we get these punches. We may see it coming or it could straight up blindside you. I was blindsided on May 20th, 2008. I received a punch that literally froze time and changed my life. It’s suspended in my mind as I see myself walking into the kitchen seeing a note on the fridge. The note had three words that would deflate a perfect day of seeding. The three words that changed my life were Invasive Inductal Carcinoma. That is moment I learned that my mother had breast cancer. I was done, I felt like life had started the ten count on me and that I wasn’t going to get up. But like Rocky, I was able to roll with the punches and stand back up. I wasn’t going to let this beat my mom or my family. Throughout that year, my family grew closer as the cancer grew weaker. We had bad times and we had good times. This made ever moment so special to the seven of us. The cancer had left my mom and I was just about ready to start my freshman year when another haymaker came from the back. This time my father was diagnosed with Colon Cancer. My Family didn’t know what to do, especially my brother Scott and I. This go around was going to be harder. We had the entire crop left in the fields and my dad was going into surgery. I didn’t know what to expect, but I do know that I was going to enjoy spaghetti for the next six months. This time was again Like Rocky, we all stood up before ten count. Our Neighbors came by the droves to help us finish the fight, be it with my father’s cancer or with the last acres of wheat. These huge punches that life throws at us can hurt for a long time, but if you hold on to the pain you can’t be who you are. I know that this affected myself for along time, which didn’t let me be myself. Yea Rocky suffered serious injuries in his bout as a boxer. But everyday he woke up and did what he did best, trained to be ready for whatever life or Ivan Drago could throw at him. Life will throw some nasty punches our way. Know that all we have to do is stand up after we get hit and Roll with the Punches. ‘Make it Yours’ Mikayla Young, State Secretary Five years, four months, and three days ago, “I made it mine!” This specific “count-up” I have for myself dates back to my very first Winter CDE FFA Competition. The day before my competition, I spent the entire day studying, practicing, and packing up anything and everything I would need for the early FFA morning that was about to come. Believe it or not, I even set my alarm for 4:00 am because I believed I needed two extra hours to practice. Of course, the next morning didn’t go as planned… AT ALL! I say this because I ended up waking up half an hour later than when the bus was supposed to take off. The only reason I woke up was to my house phone ringing and on the other end was the voice of my advisor, Mr. Schneider furiously asking me where I am and why I am so late. I never woke up to my alarm! It was my entire fault. I 39

had two choices: #1 To go, or #2 not to go. It would have been a whole lot easier to just say I wasn’t feeling very well and spend my Saturday lying in bed because trust me… I knew there would be other competitions and many more early sleepless Saturdays because of FFA. I also knew, “In the end we regret the chances we don’t take.” I decided that I needed to go. I may have also decided since I was going to make the whole chapter late and my advisor would be very upset with me to walk on the bus with tears. Let me tell you, it works every time… “I am the author of my life, unfortunately I am writing in pen, and can’t erase my mistakes.” WE are the authors of our own lives and WE are writing in pen. Since we are writing in pen we can’t erase our mistakes. We can’t change what has already happened in the past. We can only cross out and scribble over our mistakes in an attempt to fix them but in the fragments will always remain. Every author will have a different story to tell. We are in charge of our own paths. Unfortunately, we can be stopped from writing our story.” Harry Crews once said, “There is something beautiful about scars, whatever nature. A scar means the hurt is over, the wound is closed and healed, done with.” Often when we hear the word scars we think about the physical ones. You have scars, I have scars, whether it is the one on my knee from my ACL Reconstruction Surgery or the one under my chin from believing I was capable of doing a back flip at the age of eight. The truth is., It’s the emotional scars that keep us from continuing to write our story and stop us from “making it ours.” Emotional scars are the scars that cause the most pain and take the longest to heal. “These scars come from our own regrets or fears we may have. Also, the people around us can cause these emotional scars from any type of hurt we have suffered.” Scars only make our story more interesting. We need these physical and emotional scars to teach us important life lessons. We learn to accept. We learn to forgive. We learn to be “diligent in labor, just in our dealings, courteous to everyone, and above all honest and fair in the game of life.” Most importantly… We should learn to “Make it Yours.” Always remember to, “Make it Your” 2014 State FFA Convention because you don’t have to be here …you get to be here! “Make it Your” Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) because you don’t have to do it… you get to do it! “Make it Your” role to be the best chapter officer as you can be because you don’t have to be an officer…you get to be an officer! “Make it Your” FFA Experience because you don’t have to be in FFA… you get to be in FFA. You are the author of your own life. Remember as time goes by you will create many physical and emotional scars, don’t let them prevent you from writing your story. Their only purpose is to tell a more unique story. I have been “Making it Mine” everyday since five years, four months, and three days ago! North Dakota FFA, now it’s time to… “Make it yours!”

“Accept It” Katie Vculek, State Vice President How many of you are afraid of something? Snakes, spiders, the dark? We have all heard that famous quote that “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. Although this is completely true. Fear is simply a mindset, something, that if we truly set out minds to ignore, we can. The fears we all have keep us from achieving our own success, making lifelong friendships, and putting ourselves out there. But how many of us have the ability to remember that fear is only fear itself, Like when we come face to face with the scary childhood clown or that strange creaking noise coming from down the hall. The FFA has given me a world of experiences and opportunities. But it has also forced me to face three of my biggest fears head on. It all started when I was an eighth grader. It was my first agricultural sale contest and I was terrified. As I stood in the hallway waiting for my judge to call me into my individual sale I was about to faint. Mr. Boehm, the Richland 44 advisor, walked by and tried to cheer me. However I was past the point of no return. My judge appeared and pulled me into the room. I did everything wrong. My voice shook. And I made a fool of myself. This was the day that I discovered my first big fear of public speaking. My sale was finally finished and I left the room in a hurry. I never wanted to compete in Ag sales again. I had made up my mind that I was done. When we got home that evening I informed my sister that I was never doing ag sales again. She looked me straight in the eye. Gave me one of her death glares and informed me that I at least had to compete three times before I quit. Although I hated listening to my older sister her gentle persuasion was something I could not ignore. I continued to compete in Ag Sales and it eventually became my favorite contest. I discovered my second fear when I became a freshmen, I was so excited to attend the Green hand conference (101). I climbed that bus to Bismarck with all of my friends. I had a blast on the bus ride and could not wait to get more involved in the FFA. When the conference started, I was placed in a group that I knew no one. I was a shy freshmen and at first I sat in the back by myself so I didn’t have to talk to anyone. After I had zero fun sitting by myself in the first workshop, I decided that I was going to make a friend! As we all filed into the second workshop ask a girl, who was also sitting by herself, if I could sit by her. She replied, “Yes, until my friends get here.” So, I awkwardly sat by her until we got to move to the third and final session where I reclaimed my place in the back of the room. I didn’t even enjoy the winter leadership dance. The entire weekend I was too concerned about what others would think of me to have any fun. I discovered my third fear right here in this room. I was a junior at State Convention and I was signed up to be a co-committee chair. I honestly had little knowledge of what a co-committee chair person did but hey how hard could it be right? Turns out. It requires some public speaking. It was the chairs job to lead discussion on your specific topic. As co-chairs we would ask questions and no one would answer. We would bring up points and still no one would answer. I was getting nervous. I became unsteady on my feet and was getting light headed. I became unsure of myself. I fell not once, but twice, before I finally fainted on the floor in front of an entire delegate committee. Once I came-to, I realized my third fear, of public speaking. That same year I had decided that I wanted to become a state officer but my fears were going to keep me from accomplishing that goal unless I remembered that fear is simply fear itself. Discovering fears is something FFA members do every day. I am positive I am not the only one in this field house that is or has ever been 40

afraid of speaking in front of others or afraid to “fail”. However, that is what I love about this organization. By taking a leap of faith and joining the FFA you have made yourself extremely vulnerable. You joined an organization 580,000 strong that you knew little to nothing about. After you joined, you were willing to talk to strangers at leadership conferences, take 50 question tests, and voluntarily present in front of people that are looking for everything you do wrong Yet, by doing those things, you allow yourself to make lasting friendships, gain real life knowledge, and learn speaking skills that will serve you for a lifetime. While in high school, I was afraid of public speaking and what people would think of me if I failed. But serving as a state officer this year has allowed me to see FFA members face their fear at every conference, convention, or contest. Fears come in all shapes and sizes and you are the only one who can honestly commit to overcoming them. So what fears are keeping you from accomplishing your goals? What opportunities are you missing out on because you’re afraid? Once you accept that fear is simply fear itself. There is nothing holding you back.

“Its Your Life” Breanna Bregel, State Treasurer When I was little I wanted to be a princess, a babysitter, and work at Toys R Us. I know I had pretty high aspirations. Walt Disney taught me as a kid that all of my dreams come true if I have the courage to pursue them. And like so many other children my age I had dreams and man were they big! From watching countless Disney movies I was also taught that laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, and dreams are forever. However, soon enough, the laughter stopped being so frequent, the days of imagining soon came to a close, and dreams were no longer meant to be followed. All too soon we grow up and all too common we forget about our dreams. We conform to society’s idea of perfection. When we are little we believe in everyone’s dreams, but when we grow up we put each other down for their dreams. We put on our blue jackets and get up in front of a group of people and declare that we “Believe in the Future of Agriculture”, but we walk by a sea of blue jackets without believing in the one thing that matters, the one thing that will help progress American Agriculture for years to come, each other. Even now at 19 I get put down for my dreams. If I had a dollar for every time every time someone told me that I should be doing more with my life than going to be an Ag. Teacher I would probably have as much money as the average Ag. Teacher makes in one year. However, being a teacher and inspiring students in the way that every Ag. Teacher does is more important and valuable to me than any amount of money is. You see, my dream is not only to be an Ag Teacher, its to inspire students for years to come. What if we spent less time living to please those people in our lives who are going to judge us no matter what we do and spent more time living to serve the people who really need us? What if we spent less time blending in and focused more of our time on standing out. What if we realized that it’s OUR life, and tried to do just that- make it OURS? Now I’m not saying we should all live selfishly and only care about ourselves, after all it is OUR life, right? Wrong. Rather I am talking about choosing who you want to live for. A quote from one of my favorite books goes like this- “Choose this day who you will serve, as for me and my household we will serve the Lord”. So then, whom do you want to serve? The popular kids? The less fortunate? God? The list goes on and on. But ultimately it is your choice to make. For those that know me you know I am a die hard Vikings fan and no matter how many times they lose or how many interceptions Ponder throws I will always support them and claim at the start of every season “this is their year, they’re going to make it to the super bowl”. When I know very well they will not be making the super bowl, heck they probably won’t even make the playoffs. Despite their not so good season after season, my sister and I make it our goal to attend at least one game a year. This past year was no different, my sister and I got to attend a Vikings game this year over Christmas vacation and at the game they recognized a young boy. Now, I don’t even remember his name, but that’s not what matters. He was about 10 years old and had a brain tumor and he received an award for his courage and strength. A quote that he said will stay with me forever. Instead of being upset about his situation he stated that he’s not giving up and chooses to fight every single day instead. What if we had just half the amount of courage of this little boy? I don’t know what anyone in this room is going through and we all have our own trials in our lives, but what if instead of letting every problem and trial get us down we made the decision to fight those trials every single day. Another one of my favorite quotes goes like this “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive”. So, ND FFA Members I challenge you to find what makes you come alive. Fuel Passion, Spark Action, and Ignite FFA. But most importantly never forget that It’s Your Life.

Dankeshchon States Reporter Lincoln Christensen Well, I honestly didn’t think that I’d get to here. Here, in front of all of you, who I’ve gotten to know, and love over the years. And that is exactly why I am up here. Because of all of you. I’m supposed to do a retiring address, but since this convention, we’re doing everything a bit differently, I thought why not? I’m going to do a thank you party. Sorry, I don’t believe in cake, or ice cream so we won’t be having any, that’s what the RDC is. Next, when I say your name, could you please stand up, and keep standing, I don’t like to be the only one. I think I’ll stick close to home, with Myles Odermann! You all know Myles, especially after he just introduced me. Myles and I 41

have been friends for a long time, we road bus when we were young, played football together, hurdles, crops judging, shot trap, and no matter what, Myles was always better than me! No matter what I did, Myles always got the upper hand, and I want to thank him for that. For the brotherly competition we always had, and helping me realize that no matter what, sometimes there will always be people that do better than you. And instead of quitting, you can learn from these mistakes, and leap at the chance to do better. Next, since she also introduced me, Angela Leier! Once again, if you don’t know who Angela is, I ask you to please pay attention; I’m only doing this speech once. Angela Leier was the person who really persuaded me to become a state officer. She practically broke my arm into it, and when I ran, she was my most helpful campaign manager. If you guys remember these fans (Bring out fan) from last year, these were her idea, and she supplied the materials, which I still haven’t paid her back for yet, after this, please hunt me down so I can pay you back. How about some Max people? Cheer if you’re from Max! Well, I’d like to especially thank two people from Max, please rise Dylan Finken, and Jordan Tomlinson. Dylan, you always bring a ray of sunshine wherever you go. Jordan, thank you for the rock. I still have it in my jacket. Next up, are two interesting men, Ceph Dockter, and Alex Irlmeier. These guys were the first members I truly met while being a state officer, and I am so happy that I got to meet these two. Whenever I see Alex, It’s guaranteed that he’s going to koala bear hug me. And when I see Ceph, I’ll always get a hand shake, thanks Ceph. But these two always remind me about the 2 sides of FFA is. This fantastic, crazy organization that’s all over the place, literally, it’s national; and the association that strengthens us, immortalizes us, and shows us what our future can hold. I’ll let you decide who represents which. Now, even before these two, I had my grandfather, Raymond Edward Christenson. We share a name, and so much more than that. My grandpa taught me how to throw, while my own father, taught me how to catch. He taught me how a man should act, and live; with honor, love, and respect. And I see a couple of you looking around, wondering where he is, but trust me. I know where he is, he is standing proud. And finally, I’d like to thank you all. This is the part where all ya’ll stand, I know you can, you did it for me last year. I’d like to thank you all. You helped me realize what the FFA really is. The FFA is more than an organization, and more than a foundation, and association. The FFA is a family. A family with such a strong faith in agriculture that we all decided to wear matching blue jackets, just like those weird shirts that you sometimes get at family reunions. That’s why I’m not giving you all a retiring address. Because you never retire from family, true you may get tired of it, and just want some time by yourself, but you can never truly be done with FFA. So why say you’re retiring? My fire is just starting. So please, ladies and gentleman. Ignite! “Find Your Path” Bryce Lynne, State Sentinal Show of hands how many people here knew exactly what job they were going to have when they were 8 years old. I know I did, I was going to play baseball for the Minnesota twins and from how they have been playing lately that might still be a possibility. Even when we are kids we already think we know exactly where we are going in life, but life changes things happen that changes our minds and changes our plans. Throughout my life I have experienced a couple of these events that have changed by perspective on where I want to be. After 6th grade I changed schools. I didn’t know a lot of people at my new school and this made me very shy. But one thing was about to change all of that. I was lucky and I had one friend in my new class. My friends name was Tyler Fjehldahl, I was hanging out with Tyler after school one day when he asked me if I wanted to come with him to an FFA meeting later. I had no idea what happened at an FFA meeting or even what FFA was. I was hesitant and almost didn’t go but Tyler keptbugging me about it until I went. Now when I got to the meeting to say I was intimidated would be an understatement. They’re all these people there that I didn’t know and I had no idea what I was supposed to do. As the meeting started I was amazed by what I saw. These FFA members were saying these long speeches that they called opening ceremonies. I knew that I wanted to be able to get up and speak in front of an entire room just like these members were doing. That was the day that I joined the FFA and I can confidently say that it was the best decision of my life. I’d like to think that day I took an important step toward the path that I was meant to take. Fast forward on year to my first everstate convention, now I was not ready for what I was about to see. I didn’t know there were so many FFA members, they’re were blue jackets everywhere. The next day I went to a convention session and watched one of the current state officers give their retiring address. I didn’t know how they could stand up in front a thousand people and give a speech. I knew that I wanted to be that person, that was the moment that I realized I wanted to be a state officer one day. Fast forward to last year’s state convention, more specifically Thursday night, the voting started for the new state officer team. I’ll be honest with you I was a nervous wreck. I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown but right before I was about to snap my Ag teacher Mr. Bridges came to my room and told me something that may have changed my life. He told me that tomorrow is just a fork in the road. If I get state office I’ll go down one path and if I don’t I’ll go down the other. As you can see I was lucky enough to go down the state officer path and I can already see how that path has changed me. Before I got state office I was planning on majoring in wildlife Management and Now I’m Majoring In Ag education. Getting state office made me realize how much the FFA has helped me become the person I am today, so now I want to help other students become better through the FFA. I now realize that you can’t see exactly where your path is headed because you don’t know what things life is going to throw at you or what opportunities are going to be presented to you. So FFA members I challenge you to go out into the world take advantage of every opportunity that is available to you and find your path.

“Keep on Truckin’ ” State Parliamentarian – Macey Isaacs I learned to walk when I was 9 months old. My mom says I would craw over to the coffee table and reach my fat little hands up and latch on to the lip and use all the little muscles I had to pull myself up and then I would smile a huge toothless smile and giggle. But then, I would get caught up in the moment, let go of that table lip, and fall down on my diapered tooshie. I didn’t know it at 9 months, but I had two choices, I could reach back up, grab the lip and pull myself back up again, or I could sit there and stare at the table and cry. By my standing here today, you can tell I chose to pull myself back up. But everyone knows to get back up, but what do you when you get back up? Don’t worry, like a good college student, I Googled it! Google says, ‘when life knocks you down, get back up and say, ‘you hit like a girl.’ To which I exited my google page and did not refer to it anymore for the duration of writing this Retiring Address! But what do we do when we get back up? We keep on truckin’ by patiently and persistently persevering. So what happens when your first attempt to reach your goal fails? What do you do? We’ve all heard the saying that great things are in store for those who wait. Knowing this, you must first remain patient in all that you do. The key to being patient is being positive. If you are diligently patient, but you become negative and grow tired of waiting, chances are, your goal was right in front of you, and all you needed to do was wait one more day. Those who chose to quit are usually right in front of the finish line. But, if you are positive in your waiting and in your abilities, then you should be confident to wait for something to come your way. But I don’t want you to confuse patience with laziness. Laziness is the refusal to work or participate in an activity. Patience is quietly and steadily persevering, especially in misfortune, delay, hardship, or pain, and doing so calmly and without complaint or anger. If you are constant in your patience and continue to work at your goal, your success is just around the corner, so keep on truckin’ by patiently and persistently persevering. The difference between who you are and who you want to be is what you do, and although what you do to get where you want to be may not be easy, all it takes to get there is persistence. To persist is to remain steady in a course of action or pursuit. Remember the story of the tortious and hare? The hare ran as fast as he could and stopped to rest right before the finish line and fell asleep, whereas the tortious remained steady in his endeavors and ended up passing the sleeping hare and won the race. The tortious then turned to the hare and said a famous line that I’m sure you all know, ‘slow and steady wins the race.’ If you work slowly but constantly, you will succeed as opposed to if you work fast for a short while and do not continue, then you will in turn, be unsuccessful. If you stay dedicated to your goal and keep at it, your persistence will surely pay off. Set up a time line in which to follow and keep yourself on track so you can reach your goal. I challenge you to keep on truckin’ by patiently and persistently persevering. Persevere: to continue in a course of action, in spite of difficulty or opposition. Never quit. If you fall, get right back up because it doesn’t matter what happened yesterday, today is a new day. It’s up to you to get back on track. It’s up to you to move closer to your goals and dreams, so never quit. Life will throw many things your way, society will discourage you and tell you that you are wrong. You will encounter hardships and obstacles before you, but it is up to you to persevere. In today’s language, you may be able to grasp this concept if I were to say, keep calm and carry on. This is just a catch phrase to encourage you to keep on keeping on. We say it and add whatever we want to on the end, but it all means the same thing; persevere. Nothing will get done in your life without perseverance. Hardships will come your way, but those who will persevere will prosper in the end, because the difference between the successful and unsuccessful is not the absence of obstacles, but the presence of perseverance. So it’s quite simple, keep on truckin’ by patiently and persistently persevering. There will be many times in life when it seems easier to lay down for a bit, but that will only put you behind. I know there have been times in my own life when I think that I’ve had enough and I can’t take anymore, but then, I pick myself up, dust myself off, and every time, not long after I fall and chose to get back up, something miraculous happens. Even if you try and fall on your face, at least you moved forward. In conclusion, I want you to always know and remember that every morning for the rest of your life, as long as you wake up, God’s plan for you is not yet complete, there is something better coming your way; you just have to patiently and persistently persevere. So North Dakota FFA, always… KEEP ON TRUCKIN’!!!
