Call to Convention!

by Jodie Boe, State President

Fellow FFA members, it’s time. It’s time for the biggest and best week of the year, NORTH DAKOTA STATE FFA CONVENTION! This year’s convention promises to be a week full of opportunities, fun, friendship, and most importantly, leadership. Our theme this year is “I Believe”, and I truly believe that the best and brightest will be at NDSU to compete in the numerous State CDEs. I also believe that there will be a great deal of fun to be had throughout the week, during performances like Deuces Wild, Music on Wheels and 32 Below! We will have a special guest in attendance National Eastern Region Vice President Ken Quick, a fundraiser for Farm Rescue, and the election of your 2012-2013 State FFA Officer team! We hope that all of you are able to join us during this exciting week and wish the best of luck to everyone, no matter if you’re competing or just participating. I challenge all of you to take full advantage of this action packed week and hope that some of the excitement from the convention will be taken back to your home chapters and communities. This is your time to shine, North Dakota FFA. Make the most of it! I believe, we believe, we are ND FFA!

Farm Chores are Allowed

How would you like to be told that you can’t help your parents on the farm? That it would be illegal for you to operate a grain truck, tractor, combine, or other farm machinery, even though you have a driver’s license? How about that you couldn’t feed or take care of your farm’s animals? That is what these proposed child labor laws would have done. Starting in the fall of 2011, the Department of Labor had introduced new child labor regulations that would have restricted what children could do on the farm. The provisions would have restricted any child under the age of 18 from doing any work “in the storing, marketing, and transporting of farm product raw materials.” That would mean children would not have been able to operate any power- driven equipment. The rules would have prohibited work in “country grain elevators, grain bins, silos, feed lots, stockyards, livestock exchanges and livestock auctions.” These rules would have gotten rid of the exceptions for family farms, FFA, and 4-H. This would mean children under the age of 16 and would not have be able to perform such tasks for their Supervised Agricultural Experience program or for 4-H projects. Another provision for those under 16 was working above six feet from the ground. That would eliminate most ladders. In the situations of animals, children would not have been able to “inflict pain on an animal.” This would include putting a halter on an animal to show it at a fair.

After much disagreement from agricultural organizations, such as the American Farm Bureau Federation, the Department of Labor revised the rules to include the exception of children on their parents’ farm. This still limited a majority of children to help out on the farm. Kids would still not have been allowed to help on neighboring farms or a farm where the parents do not own the entire farm. (i.e., if a grandparent was to partially own the farm with the parent). These regulations would have been the downfall of family farming. Working on the farm as a child develops great work ethic, appreciation for the land, and understanding of where our food and clothing come from. The agricultural community firmly disapproved these laws; and after thousands of letters, emails, and conversations with the United States government, the proposed laws were withdrawn from consideration. This is why we need advocates of agriculture. Government needs to realize that we, as members of the agricultural community, will stand up for our beliefs, morals, and rights to continue our duties as providers of agricultural products to the nation and the world. Let’s take this example as motivation to make a difference in our state and national government. Remind them how important family farming is to you and how working on a farm affected your outlook on life.

Banquet Review by Cody Folden, NW Region VP The 2011-12 state officer team went from Lakota down to Bowman County, up to Divide County and down to Wahpeton. With each officer going to 7 to 10 banquets, we saw many degrees, proficiencies, and awards handed out along the way. I, personally, shed some tears and I barely know some of you. It is great to see every chapter that has a banquet, have their town and sponsors supporting them for the last time in this academic year. I absolutely love the food at every banquet I have been to. We have good times at banquets, but let’s not forget about the hard work of your advisors, the members, and anyone else who helps put the banquet on. Without you this wouldn’t be possible. We wouldn’t get to come to towns and represent the state office if it wasn’t for you. Thank you FFA members, advisors, and guests, for making this banquet season very special.

Winter CDE’s

After hundreds of miles and a lot of early Saturday mornings, the winter judging season has come to a close. Thanks to a rather mild winter, the livestock judgers had a lot less frozen fingers, noses, and toes. I think many of the advisors and coordinators of local contests were also extremely grateful for the nice winter. For me, the season started out at one of the largest local contests in the state, and I am, of course, talking about the Little International at the NDSU Campus in Fargo. It is always nice to see teams from both North Dakota and Minnesota compete in these events. I would like to thank the Little “I” coordinators for hosting another great contest. After that, it was a blur of small, local contests. From Wyndmere to Beulah and Napoleon to Rugby, and everywhere in between, the state officers had somewhere to be every weekend.

Finally, a whole winter’s worth of preparation had to be put to use during the state contest at our new venue in Minot. From what I observed, members and advisors alike were pleased with the move to Minot. It showed that most were curious about the change as this year was one of ND FFA’s largest Winter CDE events ever. Here are some numbers to prove it. Ag Sales: had 182 individuals and 28 teams participating., Crops Judging had 208 individuals and 53 teams participating and Livestock Judging had 191 individuals and 52 teams competing.

led his team to a first place victory. Other high individuals in the Ag Sales contest were: 2nd, David Leier (Napoleon); 3rd, Bailey Bitz (Napoleon); 4th, Nicollette Bitz (Napoleon); and 5th, Kayla Grimm (Max). The High Individual for the Livestock Judging contest was Klay Oland from Lisbon and the High Team was Medina. The other high individuals were: 2nd, Garrett Becker (Minot); 3rd, Seth Obritsch (Belfield); 4th, Ceph Dockter (Medina); and 5th, Bailey Dockter (Medina). Finally, the High Individual for the Crops Judging Contest was Megan Jones from Fessenden-Bowdon and the As for the winners and those high team was from Carrington. Other teams who will represent our state at the high individuals were: 2nd, Ella WoroNational FFA Convention in Indianapolis niecki (Hebron); 3rd, Breanna Bregel next fall, a lot of participants had an appe- (Carrington); 4th, Peter Henson tite for Baby Bison, but only 3 were able (Carrington); and 5th, Taylor DeMers to take the prestigious trophies home. Winter Leadership Conferences Another year has gone by and another Winter Leadership Conference has been recorded into the books. The 360, 212, and the new and improved 101 conferences were held on January 7-8th at the Ramkota Hotel in Bismarck. Packed full of leadership workshops, great banquet food, and a little bit of booty shaking made these conferences a great experience for new and seasoned FFA members. The 101 conference was revamped with a new title to welcome members of any grade instead of just “Greendhands”. The 212 conference was open to those who have completed

their Greenhand Degree, seeking to improve their leadership skills, and was put on by past national FFA officers. The 360 conference was a great experience for the older members to broaden their horizons. The night of January 7th was full of great, clean fun. A kick off banquet was in session to award members for their efforts and also for the 101 attendees to put their newly learned table manners to use. After the banquet, a dance was held for members to unwind, meet new friends, and to show off some skills on the dance floor. The final day of conferences was to conclude sessions.

by Taylor Friesz, SW Region VP

All-in-all, the conferences were a great success and a good way for members to meet new friends and gain skills for their future expeditions. I hope to see all of you guys at state convention and remember, to stay safe! Funding for the Leadership Conferences was provided by :

Here is a look back at the 1959 ND State FFA Convention ******************************************************

Farm Rescue Fundraiser

by Wyatt Bachmeier, NE Region VP

This year at state convention, our North Dakota State FFA Association has decided to do a fundraiser for Farm Rescue. Farm Rescue is a non-profit organization that plants and harvests crops for family farmers that have been affected by an illness, injury, and/or a natural disaster (For more information about Farm Rescue check out http farmrescue.org/). These folks have been a big help to several North Dakota farmers who needed it to have a productive year, and Farm Rescue needs volunteers, sponsors, and individual donors to continue their efforts. Therefore, during the Thursday night dance, the North Dakota FFA State Officers will be putting on a dollar dance in which all proceeds will be used to support the Farm Rescue cause. Please make sure to bring some dollar bills to the dance on Thursday for the opportunity to dance with the State Officer team.
