share the expenses, and at the end of harvest, would share the profits. Every year since then, Aaron has added to his business and SAE by renting additional acres and planting new or different crops. Aaron has both enjoyed the last 4 years of working on his family farm, and has learned many important lessons, including the many different facets of farming.
Moving on through hard times is often better than clinging to the good times. Don’t get too caught up in the fading beauty of a sunset; rather, remember it will soon rise and bring new light, and a new day.

“There are a lot of people out there, including people in the FFA, that aren’t informed on what it takes to farm. They tell me, ‘Oh, you have auto-steer and so much technology that your job is easy!’” says Aaron. “There’s a lot more to it from the accounting, grain marketing, working on equipment, maintenance and everything else that comes along with it.”
STAR FARMER
AARON JOHNSON, GARRISON “Most of my first memories are riding with my dad in the tractor, combine, semi or sprayer,” says Aaron Johnson (Garrison FFA Chapter), as he reflects on the SAE he started in 2016. “It’s always been my goal to - one day - take over the family farm.” Aaron began his SAE by renting land with his sisters. Each of the siblings would
STAR IN AG. PLACEMENT TYLER LEE, CARRINGTON
Sponsored by CNHI Industrial Capital, Farmers Union Insurance
Aaron’s diligence and work ethic earned him the 2020 Star Farmer award, presented during the 91st Virtual State FFA Convention. As he reflected with us on receiving the award, we asked him: “What is your advice to someone who wants to know, and learn, what it takes to run a farm?”
Four years ago, Tyler Lee was given an offer to work with his dad at Zink Farms in Carrington, ND. He remembers, excitedly, taking the offer. “I just love running tractors and seeing how everything works,” says Tyler. “And I got to work with my dad!” He may not have known at the time, but his work throughout the next couple of years, along with learning many life lessons, would earn him the 2020 Star in Ag. Placement award.
“Get out on a farm and see what it’s like,” said Aaron. “Go to a few different ones, in fact. You’ll see that everybody does things a little differently. They each have their reasons, and you may not understand that reason, but it’s important to them and I bet you could learn something from it.”
When asked what lessons he takes away from his experiences at Zink Farms, Tyler shares his experience with time management as the most important. “You have to be able to manage your time, especially when you’re doing a job by yourself,” says Tyler. “You have to know how long it’s going to take
and when you should be done in order to move on to the next job that needs to be done.” Tyler’s work and experience didn’t only earn him a top award; it also helped paint his future. Tyler will attend Lake Region State College this fall and plans to major in Precision Agriculture. “I love the technology in farming,” says Tyler. “I hope to learn more about what we could use to make things even more efficient and accurate.” After he earns his degree, Tyler plans to continue working with Zink Farms. “I’m really glad I had the chance to work here and I want to go back,” said Tyler. “I’m just really thankful for the job and what it gave me.”
91ST VIRTUAL STATE CONVENTION Like many events, conferences, and conventions scheduled to happen during the COVID-19 pandemic, all in-person aspects of the 91st North Dakota State FFA Convention were canceled for the health of our members, staff, and volunteers. While we were not able to get together in-person, we decided to bring the spirit of state convention into our members’ homes. With the help of our generous sponsors, RDO and Dakota Access, the ND FFA Foundation sent the Convention-in-a-Box to 1,000 members from across the state!

I will not knowingly wrong my fellow teachers. I will defend them as far as honesty will permit. I will work for the advancement of agricultural education and I will defend it in my community, state and nation. I realize that I am a part of the school system. I will work in harmony with school authorities and other teachers of the school. TWO NORTH DAKOTA AG. TEACHERS SELECTED AS
The program, designed to equip its participants with knowledge to take advantage of opportunities, curriculum and resources within the National FFA Organization, consists of multiple different online training seminars, meetings and events. Although the two ND teachers will be learning and experiencing this program together, it was separate motivations that sparked them to apply.
NATIONAL TEACHER
AMBASSADORS
Take what you have learned from your FFA experience, and do something amazing with it. When you look at it like this, you will realize there is really no end to FFA.
Madeliene Nichols Retiring Address 2019-20 ND FFA State Sentinel
In 2016, the National FFA Organization saw an incredible opportunity to help develop and advance agricultural education teachers across the country. They recognized their ability to accomplish this with a professional development opportunity that strategically chose teachers in the USA who came from different backgrounds; who represented different experiences; those who were teaching interesting and/or advanced curriculum in their classrooms; and those who had a desire to pass their knowledge and experiences onto their peers. This opportunity was used to create the National Teacher Ambassador program.
Since the program was launched, less than 150 ag. teachers from across the country have been selected to participate in the program. In the program’s inaugural year, Brent Arendt, ag. teacher at the Park River FFA Chapter, was the first North Dakota educator to be selected for the program, and has been the only one since, until this year. In April of 2020 the National FFA Organization released the names of those selected as a 2020-21 National Teacher Ambassador. Within the group of 59 teachers selected, two are educators representing the great state of North Dakota. Nikki Doll (Center FFA) and Breanna Bregel (Wahpeton FFA) will both take part in this incredible opportunity.
The focus on networking and the proper implementation of new ideas are what encouraged Breanna Bregel to apply. “Nikki and I are both young in the profession and we want to try new things,” says Bregel. “We’re young enough to not be ‘set in our ways’ in anything yet. We’re open, willing and want to try everything we can.”
The students throughout North Dakota classrooms deserve to have a good teacher... with an education that comes alive. USE YOUR PHONE CAMERA

- Nikki Doll
I really hope both young and more experienced teachers in ND use us as a resource. It’s a gift to our students to not stay stagnant. - Breanna Bregel
Nikki Doll is looking forward to using this experience and opportunity to further develop the creativity she brings to her classroom. “One of my favorite things is getting creative to create different learning environments for students that are fun, immersive and create inquiry-based learning,” says Doll. “I want to learn how I can show fellow ND ag. teachers how to adapt resources that might not fit what we need, or how to make their own.” The two teachers will use their position as a 2020-21 Teacher Ambassador throughout the school year by serving as a resource for fellow ND teachers. They will be able to answer questions about National FFA programs and applications as well as help direct them to resources for their classroom. This year of service, for them, is viewed as an opportunity to help create innovation, change and new ideas across North Dakota classrooms. “I really hope both young and more experienced teachers in ND use us as a resource,” says Breanna Bregel. “It’s a gift to our students to not stay stagnant.” “The students throughout North Dakota classrooms deserve to have a good teacher,” says Doll. “We need to give them that with an education that comes alive.”
We’re proud supporters of the North Dakota FFA.

WORDS FROM THE
PRESIDENT Greetings to FFA members, advisors, and supporters.
I hope this letter finds you and your families healthy and in good spirits, considering all the disruptions and changes in our lives. With this set of unusual circumstances ND FFA has experienced many cancellations of events and opportunites: Career Development Events, State FFA Convention, the North Dakota State Fair and more. While this year has been different, it is not necessarily a bad thing. Learning to adapt and thrive in new, unpredictable situations is a great opportunity to express personal growth as a leader, and I have no doubt that our FFA members continue to be up for the task! I would like to congratulate our new State FFA Officer team for 2020-2021. These young men and women will do an outstanding job this coming year. Congratulations are also in order for Mr. Tommy Winders who was appointed Executive Director of the North Dakota FFA Foundation. Furthermore, Andrew Young, Tommy Winders and others are to be congratulated for their hard work in getting sponsorship and their involvement in the 2020 State FFA Convention In-A-Box that was shipped out to some 1,000 ND FFA members. I hope that those of you who received a box enjoyed the gift and are excited by these new, innovative ways to be connected with ND FFA. As the summer progresses I hope that you will continue to become even more active in your FFA chapter and state FFA activities. Try new activities including leadership positions, Career Development Events, SAE projects as well as continue to set the example for your peers to be the best ND FFA member you can be. Do not be afraid to go outside your comfort zone. I hope that when schools are allowed to reopen that FFA leadership activities, Career Development Events, Conventions, scholarships and other opportunities that FFA has to offer will continue again and will result in the joy that so many find from learning how to become young leaders. Enjoy the rest of the summer and I look forward to the energy and fun that you will bring to ND FFA in the upcoming year! Thank you to all our FFA sponsors. Without your continued support our programs, curriculum and events that so many members participate in, learn from, and look forward to would not be possible without your continued friendship. Stay safe and take care,
Jeff Hagel
ND FFA Foundation President
