WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT Michael Axt

We’re using this fall newsletter to not only give an update on what’s been happening in the North Dakota FFA but also to thank some of our incredible 2018 sponsors and supporters. The funds received by the Foundation allow many students the financial assistance to enhance their education, attend conferences and gain new experiences. A major event we’re recapping in this issue: National FFA Convention. North Dakota’s members competing gave topnotch performances, Garth Brooks hosted a private concert, 51 ND FFA Members received their American Degree and the President of the United States stopped for a visit. As we look forward, 2019 has a bright future with a lot in store. In January, we’ll be awarding more than 260 jackets from generous donors who gave to the Blue Jackets Bright Futures program, February will usher in college scholarship applications for both National FFA and the ND FFA Foundation. Funding for foundation scholarships was made available in 2006 when the ND FFA Foundation was gifted farmland from a trust by Fridjov Bakk. This farmland and trust make many programs we fund possible, including: Beginning and Expansion SAE Grants, college scholarships for deserving ND FFA members and tuition grants for clients in the ND Farm Business Program. Finally, a large event on our radar is Giving Hearts Day which will be hosted on Valentine’s Day this year (February 14th). Mark your calendars; we’re putting together some fun surprises and we can’t wait to engage with you on this day.

CENTER FFA CHAPTER CHOSEN AS FINALISTS FOR TWO NATIONAL AWARDS The Center FFA Chapter was chosen as a finalist in two areas of the 2018 National Premier Chapter Awards. Their categories of qualification included: 1. Building Communities award; and 2. Growing Leaders award. To be eligible for the Premier Chapter Awards, a chapter must first apply for and receive their National Chapter Award, a distinction in 2018 given to only eight chapters in North Dakota. Chapters are then evaluated by two separate sets of judges and given a one, two or three star rating. In order to apply for a Premier Chapter award, a chapter must receive a three-star rating. Of the eight National Chapters from ND, Center and Rolla were the only to receive a three-star rating. Each of the award categories receive over 2,000 chapter applicants before being narrowed to ten finalists in each area. The Center FFA Chapter facilitated two programs in the 2017-2018 school year which qualified them as candidates for these prestigious awards: Their Adopt a Texas Classroom project and their Wildcats Wandering the World project.

ADOPT A TEXAS CLASSROOM The Program of Activities (POA) submitted for the 2018 National Premier Chapter: Building Communities award, Adopt a Texas Classroom, focused on gathering and delivering necessary supplies for a Texas class affected by 2017’s Hurricane Harvey. “After seeing an online post from a Texas teacher saying she was accepting applications for people to adopt a classroom, I approached our thenpresident Abby Hintz to see if this is something our chapter wanted to do,” says Nikki Doll, Advisor of the Center FFA Chapter. “It didn’t take her long to decide we should focus on this service activity for the year.” The classroom adopted by Center was a class with special needs within the Cy Ridge High School in Houston, Texas. In order to spread awareness and gather donated supplies, members of

the chapter created posters, fliers and sent out letters to students and members of the Center community. “Donations began to pour in from members of the community and people we didn’t even know,” explains Doll. “We packaged the supplies and sent them with a group from Garrison High School that was heading to Texas for their own service project, and they hand delivered them to the classroom in need,” she continues. “The whole experience was incredibly rewarding and I am so proud of our members and our community.”

WILDCATS WANDERING THE WORLD The POA submitted by the Center FFA Chapter for their second area of nomination, the Growing Leaders award, Wildcats Wandering the World, focused (and continues to focus through its successful implementation) on bringing virtual career fairs to the students of Center-Stanton High School. “We had been holding traditional career days, but they were limited only to businesses and industries in our surrounding area,” says Doll. “Kathryn Doll, the school counselor, and I pitched the idea of holding a virtual career fair to our students, who agreed it would be a great project, and together we started brainstorming on how it would work.” After gathering information on the students’ interests and the careers they would like to learn about, the result was a bi-monthly virtual visit from professionals from a variety of industries and in different locations around the country.

“We allowed our students to see more, and to me, it brought to life the concept of classrooms without limitations.” The project started in the second half of the 2017-2018 school year and quickly grew into an opportunity the students cherished. This year, the project is being run by students with the goal of continuing to grow the program. “They have been working hard to gather a list of guests and are still aiming for two every month,” says Doll. “With all the incredible guests we have, it’s becoming normal for our students to see people just like them doing extraordinary things.”

PRESENTING AT NATIONAL CONVENTION While the efforts of these projects were chapter-wide, two members from the chapter were selected to present their work on the national stage alongside the other nine finalists from around the country. Abby Hintz and Caden Albers presented Adopt A Texas Classroom, while Shelby Meckle and Teegan Henke presented Wildcats Wandering the World. The presentations took place on October 24th at the 2018 National FFA Convention in Indianapolis.

Join the Blue Jackets Bright Futures Movement In January we plan to give over 260 corduroy jackets to new members across the state. The members who earn a jacket must do so by providing an application that highlights their goals and passion for the FFA. Incredible friends like you have donated 260+ jackets for this year’s program. If you would like to donate a jacket for the 2020 Blue Jackets Bright Futures program

Gift of Grain In lieu of their usual gift, the Vaughn & Dorinda Zacharias Family donated grain through their local elevator to the ND FFA Foundation this past year. Due to federal tax laws, farmers are able to gift production to non-profit organizations, which allows the organization to benefit from the sale of the grain and the producer to benefit from less taxable income. Consider backing the Blue with a Gift of Grain this season.

The retired ag educator and FFA advisor of 31 years in 2018 & 2019 Berthold explained setting up his recurring pledge was as simple as “selecting the option to make the payment monthly.” As a long-time FFA supporter, these automatic deposits have made his continued support easier than ever. When asked what prompted his pledge, he explained, “In my life and teaching I’ve seen all the good that comes from the FFA, and I got to the point in life where I could give back a little to ensure more young people have the same opportunities.” Thank you, Richard for your incredible support! Dylan Finken planned his initial SAE, with his dad, Bob. Together, they decided he could start haying the land they use to feed their goat herd. They began selling this production to other ranchers in ND. Dylan’s SAE quickly grew in acres and bale production and he has expanded his sales to the tri-state area. As Dylan matured, he began managing more of their farm’s crop production acreage to increase his knowledge of the farming operation. Soybean acreage and canola rotation became part of Dylan’s increased responsibilities.

Some years were good, and others were not as productive, allowing Dylan to see the ins and outs of the business and truly understand that agriculture is “pleasant as well as challenging.” Upon graduation from high school, Dylan continued to farm his acreage and help on the family farm while also attending college. Dylan graduated from Lake Region State College in the spring of 2017 with a degree in precision agriculture. Dylan has purchased a home in Douglas and continues to be involved as a partial owner in his family farm, Finken Farms and Seeds, LLP.

MICROSOFT AND NATIONAL FFA ANNOUNCE BLUE 365 The National FFA Organization and Microsoft Corp. announced a partnership to bring the convergence of innovative technology, science, research and entrepreneurship to classrooms in North Dakota and throughout the United States through a new program, Blue 365. Governor Doug Burgum (ND-R), National FFA CEO Mark Poeschl, Microsoft President Brad Smith, Vice President for

Microsoft Philanthropies Mary Snapp, North Dakota USDA Director Clare Carlson and North Dakota FFA State President Brianna Maddock made this announcement on July 26 in Downtown Fargo. “This is an exciting time for agriculture as technology - more than ever - connects with it,” says Brianna Maddock. “North Dakota, its students and its FFA members are going to have access to incredible pieces of technology and programming as a result of this partnership.”

North Dakota FFA State President

Brianna Maddock

addresses those in attendance at the Blue 365 press conference

Blue 365 is a comprehensive classroom initiative preparing today’s youth to become tomorrow’s leaders in agriculture. Through Microsoft’s sponsorship, Blue 365 will serve as a catalyst for evolving sustainability, innovative efficiencies and cultivating talent within the agricultural sector across the country. There are 84 FFA chapters in the state of North Dakota who may be impacted by this announcement and programming. “Having this announcement and these folks in North Dakota illustrates the impact and importance of the youth in our state and presence of ND agriculture in our country and in the world,” says Tamra Maddock, Executive Director of the ND FFA Foundation. “This is an exciting day for not only Microsoft and the members who will benefit from their partnership, but for North Dakota and the economy we proudly claim as number one; agriculture.”

IN HER OWN WORDS: THE MEANING OF FFA By Christina Bingham, Max FFA Chapter *The FFA or Future Farmers of America changed its name at the National FFA Convention in 1988 to the National FFA Organization. Delegates at this convention created this change to reflect the growing diversity in the agricultural industry.

Christina stands with her Grandfather, “Papa Fred,” wearing their blue jackets. Christina is currently a senior and a member of the Max FFA Chapter. Her parents are Mark and Peggy. Christina recently attended the National FFA Convention and placed 4th high individual in the Agriscience Fair.

8

As a seventh grader in 2013, I was given the opportunity to join the FFA. I’m not from an immediate agricultural background and neither of my parents were active members of the FFA. *At the time, I even thought the FFA still stood for “Future Farmers of America.” When I was pondering whether to join the FFA, my family took a trip to my grandparents’ home in Devils Lake, North Dakota. It was the day before I had to turn in my FFA dues and forms and my decision still wasn’t certain. Casual conversation about this choice sent my Papa, Fred Bingham, down the stairs to the basement. He returned carrying his 60-year-old national blue and corn gold corduroy FFA jacket. Across the front was his name - Fred Bingham - and an FFA emblem reading “Vocational Agriculture.” The back of his jacket read “North Dakota” just as we’re all used to seeing, and on the bottom, “Benson County.” I saw his eyes light up. I saw a passion in my Papa that day and the love he had

for this organization. At that moment, I decided I would be joining. As the years passed, I wanted to know more about his FFA story and home chapter. Papa had three FFA advisors over the course of his time in the A.S. Gibbens FFA Chapter: Oscar Pederson (1950-1953); Peter Konzak (1953-1954); and Gerald Wagner (1954-1970). Papa Fred, was awarded the honor of State Star Farmer 60 years ago at the 29th ND State FFA Convention on June 5, 1958, at the age of 21. His father, Fred Sr., was awarded the Honorary Chapter Farmer Degree of the A.S. Gibbens FFA Chapter on December 11, 1958. Today, as I write this, I’m a senior in high school and I often think about the decision our delegates made in 1988. Although the acronym for the FFA was eliminated in that year, those letters and their rich history still stand for something. For me, they stand for “Future Faces in Agriculture.” To read this article in full and for more photos, visit: ndffa.co/BinghamWords
