State sponsors of the Star Program Roger & Jeanette Kenner, Erika Kenner, Farmers Union Insurance, Northland Ford, Wheat Growers The national sponsors are the DuPont Company, Case IH, Farm Credit, & Syngenta.

Star in Agriscience Abby Braaten, Wyndmere Growing up on the family farm in Barney, ND, Abby Braaten has always been involved in production agriculture. But participation in FFA and her acceptance to ND’s Governor’s School in the summer of 2012 have given her a whole new perspective on agriculture, from the laboratory side of the industry. Abby spent a good portion of last summer working with experts in plant pathology, concentrating on wheat rust resistance. “The total impact of wheat in ND is $6.4 billion annually. When severe infections (of wheat rust) occur before the wheat flowers, there can be yield losses of 30-40%. The most economical way to prevent rust is to grow resistant varieties,” says Abby. continued pg. 2 “Stars”.

Star in Ag. Placement Donovan Zacharias, Enderlin Future Vision Partnership couldn’t be a more fitting name for the farming partnership which Donovan Zacharias grew up in and is now a partner of near Kathryn, ND. Utilizing notill, minimum-till, and conventional-till practices to improve land and crop management, Donovan now rents land and equipment from his parents, Vaughn and Dorinda Zacharias, to farm his own corn and soybeans, while working as a mechanic for Future Vision. Donovan possesses an ingrained passion for agriculture according to advisor Bob Moller and, “brings a real-life, hands-on viewpoint to my classroom.” continued pg. 2 “Stars”.

Star Farmer Verlin Zacharias, Enderlin “Verlin’s friendliness and willingness to help and learn has made it enjoyable to have him as one of my students. The leadership qualities he possess has made it easy for other FFA members to follow his example and get involved,” is what advisor Robert Moller has to say about Verlin Zacharias. Verlin is one of three sons of Vaughn and Dorinda Zacharias of Kathryn. Verlin’s SAE includes work for Future Vision Partnership which his parents own and operate. Taking on greater responsibility, Verlin put the FFA motto into action, “Learning to do, Doing to Learn” by renting land from the partnership which he manages independently. continued pg. 2 “Stars”.

Star in Agribusiness—Jaden Kallenbach, Maddock A.S. Gibbens Diversified is the best way to describe Jaden Kallenbach’s SAE. Livestock, forages, small grains and beans are all components of Jaden’s agricultural experience. From an early age he could be found working in the shop and on the farm with his father and grandfather. Recognizing opportunities when he sees them, Jaden has become a savvy agribusiness man. Drought conditions in the southern states prompted him to advertise straw and hay which was immediately purchased by several out-of-state producers. Always looking for ways to improve and better manage his business, Jaden has conducted soil and fertilizer tests, using the results to make improvements that will maximize yields. He has expanded his business by renting additional land and has purchased multiperil crop insurance. Jaden is the son of Mark and Tracy Kallenbach of Maddock. They are a family rich in FFA history. Advisor Gary Wald taught both of Jaden’s parents in high school and had this to say about their son, —continued pg. 2 “Stars”.

Abby Braaten — “At this stage in my life I have been extremely blessed to have had the leadership opportunities in the FFA, the support of the wonderful school agriculture program, and the mentoring of my agriculture teacher (Desiree Severance).” Abby is the daughter of Teresa and Andrew Braaten. Abby has been a chapter officer, active on several CDE teams, and donates numerous volunteer hours to her community. Donovan Zacharias– Readily taking on leadership opportunities in his chapter as an officer and recruiting new members, Donovan gives of his time and talents in his school and community. North Dakota State College of Science’s Diesel Technology program is where Donovan will be found next fall. Upon graduation he will return to Future Vision as a mechanic in the partnership. Verlin Zacharias– Landlord satisfaction and maintaining a positive work environment are goals Verlin has adopted from Future Vision. Verlin plans to attend North Dakota State University majoring in agricultural economics. Upon graduation he will return to Future Vision where he will farm in partnership with his brothers. Jaden Kallenbach- “I have been impressed with the knowledge Jaden has in production agriculture, including modern technology. Jaden has increased his SAE in scope and various enterprises each year since seventh grade.” This dedication earned Jaden the National Forage Production Proficiency in 2012. In addition to a viable agribusiness, Jaden has been a very active member of his chapter, serving as a chapter officer and competing in numerous CDEs. Jaden plans to major in agribusiness management and agronomy.

Thank you, 2012-13 State Officer Team, for sharing your talents and your time this year!

You’re HistorY!

No really, you are history! Not in a “You’re Outta Here” kind of way, but you, your chapter, and all the members of your chapter that have come before you are what has made ND FFA GROW for the past 84 years!

Help us prepare a celebration of FFA in ND as we commemorate the 85th Anniversary of ND FFA with a special edition book.

American FFA Degree Nominees

The following 54 individuals have been nominated by the North Dakota FFA Association to receive their American FFA Degree. Nominees will receive an email later this summer confirming they’ve met the qualifications for this degree and information on National FFA Convention. Berthold Beulah Carrington

**SPECIAL HELP NEEDED** We’d like this history to include those chapters that are no longer in existence due to closures or consolidations. If you have information on a “closed” ND FFA chapter and can help provide some history, please call Tam or Beth at the Foundation.

Des Lacs Burlington Enderlin

Here’s how your chapter can help:  Write a brief history of your chapter (300 words maximum)  Include 2 to 3 photos  Submit to the ND FFA Foundation via email to tamra.maddock@btinet.net.. Please send pictures as attachments and text in a Word document.  Submissions are due January 10, 2014
