State sponsors of the Star Program are: Williston Chamber Dickinson Chamber Minot Chamber Jamestown Chamber Roger & Jeannette Kenner Erika Kenner ND Farmers Union Service Assn. The national sponsor is the DuPont Company.

Star in Agriscience Justin Zahradka, Park River Investigating economical ways to ready the land for crop production, Justin Zahradka discovered the Walsh County Soil Conservation District was seeking cooperators for cover crop trials. Virtually overnight, Justin’s beef and crop production SAEs united in the name of research, presenting him a fantastic research opportunity. Justin has since traveled the state, presenting research and establishing relationships with researchers and producers. “The success of my research project is a result of having a variety of agricultural experiences and using each to complement one another,” says Justin. He will attend NDSU, majoring in crop and weed science. Justin is the son of Jeff and Lori Zahradka of Lawton and a member of the Park River FFA Chapter, Brent Arndt, advisor.

Star in Ag. Placement Kent Schmaltz, Rugby

Star Farmer David Leier, Napoleon

Diversified is the best word to describe Kent Schmaltz’s SAE. From a retail food business to a seed business that raises numerous crops, to certified organic grass finished beef which Kent personally manages, one could say the Schmaltz Family Farm has ag covered. Kent works side by side with his parents Blaine and Susan, learning first-hand the business of managing and marketing a successful farm. FFA has provided many leadership opportunities for Kent where he served as a chapter officer under the guidance of his advisors Rick Vannett and Nikki Fideldy. Kent plans to further develop his management skills by studying farm and ranch management at NDSCS this fall.

E,I,E,I,Oh, what doesn’t David produce on the family farm owned by his parents Mitch and Doris Leier? David’s SAE includes the production of swine, sheep, poultry, and beef, and ag placement work for two neighboring farms. David also has a long list of school and FFA accomplishments which include membership on state winning parliamentary procedure and livestock evaluation teams. David currently serves as his chapter’s president and was a three time district Officer of the Day. Advisor Brian Schneider said, “He is an excellent student who will be very successful as he pursues his career in agricultural education.” FFA and agricultural education experiences have shaped his decision to attend NDSU, majoring in agricultural education.

Star in Agribusiness Matthew Knudson, Maddock A.S. Gibbens Matthew Knudson, son of Shawn and Candace Knudson of Esmond, started a small lawn care business with 8 clients in 2007; today he has over 60 clients. A keen businessman, Matthew continues to reinvest in his operation, purchasing equipment, building a work shop, and hosting customer appreciation events. He has managed to grow his business while volunteering over 80 hours and working for an electrical contractor. He plans to pursue an associate’s degree in electrical service this fall. Matthew’s advisor is Gary Wald.

Agricultural education is built on the three core areas of classroom/ laboratory instruction, supervised agricultural experience programs, and FFA student organization activities/ opportunities.

Beth’s 10th Anniversary The 2012 ND State FFA Convention marked the 10th anniversary for the ND FFA Foundation’s beloved Executive Director, Beth Bakke Stenehjem. Beth’s dedication and devotion to the FFA members and advisors is immeasurable! During the Kickoff session of state convention Beth was surprised when the opening act Deuces Wild called her up on stage and serenaded her. She was then honored with an FFA quilt that represents all the ND FFA chapters (designed and constructed by Pam & Kristi Tonnessen), a scrapbook of congratulatory letters from members, advisors, sponsors, and friends, and 2 checks totaling over $400 each to be given to ND Impact, and to the ND State School for the Blind. Both are groups that mean a great deal to Beth and to which she volunteers her time and talents extensively. She wishes to thank the ND FFA for this honor.

Mark Berge with President Jodi Boe

Alliance Pipeline again provides $25,000 for projects Since 2003, Alliance Pipeline has partnered with the ND FFA Foundation to provide funds towards several programs. These programs focus on leadership, safety, scholarship, and volunteerism. THANK YOU, Alliance Pipeline, for making a difference in the lives of our young people.

Baby Bison Herdsman, FFA Rock Star? Megan Jones has a lot of new titles lately after she earned her 3rd Baby Bison and 1st place finish of the year in a state contest at state convention. What’s her secret? Advisor Lane Moellenkamp of Fessenden/ Bowden said, “She is extremely competitive, with others but mostly with herself. There is no doubt, she works hard at all of her cdes and she understands concepts of those cdes really well.” Megan will be a junior this fall. She placed as high individual in Crops Judging, Food Science, & Floriculture. Congratulations, Megan, and good luck at nationals!

These Folks are Producing Futures! See the back page to see how you, too, can ensure ND FFA’s future.

AgriScience Fair at State Convention This was the first year the AgriScience Fair was held at the State FFA Convention. AgriScience Fair Winners include: Animal Systems: Jr. Division winner Colbey Steeke of Scranton, Sr. Division winner was Kristina Hotchkiss of Richland 44; Plant Systems: Jr. Division winner was Brenna Ketterling of Wishek, Sr. Division winner was Taylor Ketterling of Wishek; Power Structural and Technical Systems: Jr. Division winner was Hunter Pinke from Wishek; Environmental Services/Natural Resource Systems: Sr. Division winner Josey Huber of Wishek.

During State Convention, members were asked to share memories they had of their FFA advisors. Here are a few of those stories. Way to go Advisors, you make a difference everyday! Teach Ag! Be the Difference!!! I am thankful for my advisor because he understands us kids, but also because he has taught me more than any other advisor. He is determined to make us learn no matter how loud, or disrespectful we are. He also understood and helped us out when we didn’t know what the heck we were doing. And so because of him, I am going to stay in FFA and everything to do with FFA for as long as I can. Thank you Mr. Seidler! Katie Andros Advisor: Benjamin Seidler, Turtle Lake-Mercer

Mr. Moller, I love having you as not only my coach, but also my advisor. You always have an up beat attitude and when someone is down you know what to say, like when I was in elementary and lost my first wrestling match to a boy. You told me something about having heart was more important than winning the match and I chose to stand by those words you told me so long ago. I have so many great memories in my life that I have you to thank for. So many words of wisdom you have taught me. Thank you~ Rebecca Nord Advisor: Bob Moeller, Enderlin

Thank You On behalf of our family we would like to show our gratitude, thanks and appreciation for everything the community has done in honor of Calvin Steeke. We have been blessed with so much that we can not reach everyone individually. Calvin gave so much to everyone that he came in contact with throughout his 4 years of being here on earth with us. In honor of Calvin we have started a scholarship fund to keep his love of agriculture on going. Through Life Source and his scholarship we can A all Keep Calvin Close in our hearts. Thank you, Trevor, Misty, Colbey, Abbi and Lilli Steeke Jim, Sheryl and Nevada Turbiville
