Sponsors Needed: Below are ways you can help the ND FFA Foundation and the members we serve. Thank you for considering this investment in tomorrow’s leaders.

Washington Leadership Conference (WLC) scholarships ($350 each)

Annually, FFA members from all over the United States travel to Washington, D.C., to attend the Washington Leadership Conference (WLC). During the five-day event, attendees learn how to become effective leaders by learning their purpose, how to value people, how to take action and how to serve others. FFA members leave WLC with the knowledge and the confidence to act in ways that help their schools, community, and their country. To read about the experiences of past WLC participants and to learn more visit: https://www.ffa.org/participate/conferences/washington-leadership-conference.

American Degree travel stipends ($250 each)

Each year several of ND’s FFA members travel to National FFA Convention to accept the highest degree any FFA member can earn, the American FFA Degree. Annually less than one-third of ND’s recipients attend this important event. You can help provide funds to help these college students attend.

College scholarships ($1,050 each)

The ND FFA Foundation is always accepting funds to be used toward academic scholarships to help our members succeed in their higher education. Please email the foundation at ndffafoundation@ndffa.org. Contributions can also be made to the ND FFA Foundation Endowment fund for scholarships.

Staff:

Tamra Maddock, Executive Director Andrew Young Assistant Director Beth Allen, CTSO Fiscal Manager

Seven members are selected by the ND FFA membership at the annual ND State FFA Convention to advocate for FFA, agricultural education, and the ag industry. They donate their time and energy to accomplish the FFA mission for an entire year and often do so while enrolled as a college freshman.

Thank You, Beth For fourteen and a half years the ND FFA Foundation was fortunate to have the guidance of Beth Bakke Stenehjem as our Executive Director. Beth is a former member of the Divide County FFA Chapter. Her advisor was Butch Hauglund. Beth has always been a ground breaker and leader, serving as the first female chapter president for the Divide County FFA. Under Beth’s direction the foundation transformed from funding only physical awards like trophies, plaques, and ribbons to administering programming. This program has forever changed our mission and grown the foundation for the benefit of all members throughout the state in ways that could have never been imagined. One of the most successful of these projects was the establishment of the ND FFA Foundation Blue Jackets Bright Futures program. Annually new members are invited to complete an essay for the chance to be selected to receive their very own FFA jacket. The program saw its start in 2004 with 47 jackets awarded and to date is credited with awarding more than 2,100 jackets to beginning FFA members! Thank you, Beth! In addition to the jacket program, Beth helped to advance the FFA motto “Living to Serve” by encouraging funding for community service and safety project grants for FFA chapters. Following her call to serve others, Beth recently left the foundation to work for ND Assistive a non-profit organization whose work pairs individuals with disabilities with technology to improve their daily lives. We wish Beth all the best in her new position and THANK her for the tremendous impact and friendships she has forged for the advancement of the ND FFA.

ND FFA Foundation Introduces New Leadership Tam Maddock, Executive Director Meet Tam Maddock. Tam is alumni of the Towner FFA Chapter. She currently resides outside Davenport, ND with her family. Tam is in her sixth year with the ND FFA Foundation, previously serving as the Assistant Director. She has a long history with the ND FFA serving terms as the State FFA President and State FFA Sweetheart (yup, she’s pretty old). She is a graduate of NDSU with degrees in animal science and agricultural education. She has held positions with the NDSU Research Foundation and SES, formerly MidWest Seed Services (SD). In her “down time” she enjoys running, spending time with family, home improvement projects, and sitting next to the open water with a good book.

Andrew Young, Assistant Director Welcome, Andrew Young! Andrew is a North Dakota native and current Fargo resident. He was a member of the Napoleon FFA Chapter in high school and served as a ND State FFA Officer in 2008. He’s lived and worked across the world in places from Fargo to New York City and from Los Angeles to New Zealand. His experiences include interning for ABC Network News and working for World News with Diane Sawyer and as a producer for the Academy of Country Music Awards Show. Andrew was a graduate of North Dakota State University in 2012. He worked with Scheels helping launch their internal media production department and while in New Zealand worked to organize TEDxQueenstown. Andrew’s talents range from marketing and advertising to production and photography. In his spare time he loves anything to do with a Minnesota lake, karaoke, and traveling. The foundation is excited to have Andrew and his talents working for the ND FFA.

Blue Jackets Provide Bright Futures

Thirty-two ND FFA Members Receive Grants, Totaling More Than $30,000

More than 200 donors contributed to the ND FFA Foundation’s Blue Jackets, Bright Futures Program. For just $65 per jacket, these donors are responsible for awarding 280 members one of the most important jackets they’ll ever wear. Private donors and corporate sponsors from across ND provided the funds that will start FFA Greenhand members on the path to success to develop their personal leadership skills and strengthen the agricultural industry. Donors included former state FFA officers, current FFA members, businesses, and individuals who chose to give jackets in memory and honor of FFA members and loved ones.

Thirty-two ND FFA members from across the state were awarded grants of $500 to $1000 to put toward the establishment or expansion of their supervised agricultural experience projects (SAEs).

The Blue Jackets Bright Futures Program began in 2004 when 47 jackets were awarded. Since then the program has grown by leaps and bounds and more than 2,100 jackets have been given away. Thank you to our sponsors for donating to this worthwhile program.

A Note from President—Dorinda Zacharias

On behalf of the ND FFA Foundation Board of Directors, I would like to thank all of our sponsors and supporters. I also extend a special thank you to all of our new and existing Star Partners. The funds the foundation receives allow many students financial assistance to enhance their FFA experience and education. Winter CDEs have quickly gone by. Congratulations to our winners who will be advancing to national competition. With the recent completion of the state competition in Minot, it is now time to share our thanks and appreciation for all of the help from our sponsors and judges. Annually we rely on hundreds of volunteer judges to enable us to provide quality contests. We could never accomplish what we do without your time and talents. We encourage everyone to “register” as a volunteer or judge for any number of different FFA events throughout the year by going to www.ndffafoundation.com and click the About Us Volunteer Opportunities link. The Winter Leadership Conferences in Bismarck were also a huge success. The Blue Jackets Bright Futures Program provided more than 270 jackets to deserving members. For the fifth year in a row, members showed their dedication to service by tying blankets. The ND FFA Foundation granted Supervised Ag Experience Grants to 32 students totaling more than $30,000. February saw the success of Giving Hearts Day. A tremendous thank you to everyone who donated and made this day a success. Growth of these programs assists our students by keeping the cost of participation in FFA activities low. Remember to mark your calendars for an exciting State Convention June 5– 9, 2017. Sponsors, please mark your calendars for the parent and state convention sponsor dinner on June 7 at 5pm at the NDSU Memorial Union. State convention sponsors will receive an invitation to the dinner from the foundation. Again Thank you for your continued support of the ND FFA and ND FFA Foundation!!! - Dorinda Zacharias

Looks like FUN, Right? Are you an FFA member, or do you know one who should consider serving the ND FFA as a State Officer?

See what former State Officer Nicollette Bitz’s mom, Danita, had to say about this amazing opportunity… Dear Parents of North Dakota FFA members, Two years ago, our daughter was talking to us about running for state office. We had reservations! I had six main concerns: 1) What if she doesn’t get elected? 2) How will she handle being so busy during the summer? 3) Will she be able to handle college along with state officer duties? 4) How will she handle traveling all across the state by herself? 5) Can she handle the stress? 6) Will she be successful as an officer? Reflecting on my daughter’s year of service now, I can thankfully say that all of these issues were not major barriers during her year, nor were they comparable to the incredible opportunities she was able to experience.

We talked about how much time and effort she would put into her application and the interviewing process, etc., with no guarantee of being an officer. We realized this was like applying and preparing for any job interview in her future. As many other things in FFA it would be a learning experience – including learning to win or lose gracefully. She was gone a lot during the summer. However, the time she spent away was time spent growing as a person and leader. The training sessions were very good and she met many wonderful people throughout the state. Mr. Anderson and Ms. Free prepared them well and were always there for them. Her summer as a state officer was filled with great memories and experiences she will have for the rest of her life. College started and my daughter visited with each of her professors to explain when she would be gone. She completed her first year with good grades. I was very proud that she learned to juggle her responsibilities for college and for North Dakota FFA. She learned to communicate with her professors and to seek out help and support when she needed them from classmates, the staff, and friends. When telling her that I was worried about how she would balance college, she told me that being a state officer allowed her to develop relationships with her teachers that she otherwise would not have had. The team members traveled together when possible. It is incredible how much North Dakota FFA tries to help out the state officers. She was never left without a place to stay, and always had people checking on her to make sure she arrived at her destinations safely. Our daughter was very committed to her duties and sometimes it did get stressful but with the support of friends, family, and the staff of North Dakota FFA, she learned to cope. I have seen a remarkable difference in how she manages stress and carries herself in those situations. The training sessions were very thorough. Mr. Anderson and Ms. Free made sure that the officers were prepared for their duties. If your child has a desire to run, they already have what is needed to be successful: the attitude. The year is centered on serving, and if they realize that, they will be successful in their position.

My daughter considers this to have been a very enriching experience. The connections she made with students, advisors, and other professionals around the state and nation will not be matched by any other opportunity. She has grown so much as a person, and her desire to lead and serve others has only increased since she has retired. I am so grateful she had this experience. I truly believe it has changed her in many positive ways. As a parent, it is so hard to give your child up for a year, but if I could give you a piece of advice, I would tell you to let you child have this opportunity. You will be so impressed with the organization, but also with the leader your child will develop into. Sincerely, Danita Bitz
