Winter Leadership Conference Recap

ND’s unpredictable winter weather may have postponed the start of the 2014 Winter Leadership Conference but it didn’t dampen members’ spirits for leadership and service. Traditionally held the first weekend in January annually, weather forced the conference to be held February 8-9. Students rallied attending 101, 212, and 360 conferences to develop their leadership skills. In addition to skill development and networking with other ND members students gave of their time to benefit two great causes. Read on to learn how ND FFA members again prove their commitment to their motto, “Learning to do, Doing to learn, Earning to live, Living to serve”. Special Thanks to the Tom & Frances Leach Foundation and Northland Ford and the numerous volunteers who make this event possible each year!

ND FFA Partners with Organizations, Enabling Members to Give Back

Hundreds of FFA members attending the 2014 Winter Leadership Conferences in Bismarck helped make more than 250 fleece blankets for the ND chapter of Project Linus. Project Linus donates blankets to organizations that assist children and teens in crisis situations.

The state’s only active Project Linus chapter is in Fargo. This chapter receives requests for an average of 200 blankets per month. Students listened to music and visited with other members from around the state while assembling blankets. For more information about Project Linus and how you or your organization can help, go to www.orgsites.com/nd/ projectlinusfargo/. In addition to making blankets, members assembled over 500 sack lunches for Churches United for the Homeless in Fargo/Moorhead and The Ruth Meier’s Hospitality House in Bismarck. This project was made possible thanks to generous donations of food from the Great Plains Food Bank and supplies from Cashwise Foods.

Students Receive SAE Grants Thirty-three ND FFA members from across the state were awarded grants of $750 to $1000 to put toward the establishment or expansion of their supervised agricultural experience projects (SAEs). SAE grants were awarded by funds from the ND FFA Foundation and $1,000 from the ND Crop Improvement and Seed Association. Funding for these grants was made available in 2006 when the ND FFA Foundation was gifted farmland from a trust set up by Fridjov Bakk over 20 years ago. Funds generated from the farmland make possible the following awards: Beginning and Expansion SAE Grants, college scholarships for those going into production agriculture or agriculture education, and tuition grants for clients starting the ND Farm Business Management program. Beginning SAE grant winners are Brooke Getz and Kylee Hendrickson (Bowman County), Chase Pederson (Carrington), Nathan Ball (Des Lacs – Burlington), Job Bachmeier (Granville), Shaina Rasmusson & Dalton Reinke (Lisbon), Akala Knatterud (Maddock), Cierra Dockter and Dalton Dockter (Medina), Shannon Asheim (Mohall), Andrew Gross and Devin Weigel (Napoleon), Garrett Magill (Oakes/Sargent Central), Kade Leier &

Jazlyn Brossart (Rugby), and Abbigale Steeke (Scranton). These grants are funded by the Bakk Farm and $1000 from ND Crop Improvement & Seed Association for Jazlyn Brossart. Expansion Grant Winners from the ND FFA Foundation are Alfred Schwalbe (Beulah), LauraEllen Brandjord (Bottineau), LeAnn VanBerkom (Des Lacs – Burlington), Colter Ellingson & Joshua Geinert (Edgeley-Kulm), Matthew Stroh (Killdeer), Jacob Birklid (Lisbon), Jaydin Risovi (Maddock), Dylan Finken & Casey Kramer (Max), Alex Paul Irlmeier & Brooke Krapp (Medina), Katelyn Horner & Mariah Weigel (Napoleon), Dylan Enger (Stanley), Melaree Sondroll (Turtle Lake – Mercer)

Blue Jackets Provide Bright Futures Two hundred and thirty students received their very own FFA jacket through generous donations to the ND FFA Foundation’s “Blue Jackets, Bright Futures” program. For just $61 each, 100 plus donors and corporate sponsors from across ND provided the funds that will start FFA Greenhand members on the path to success to develop their personal leadership skills and strengthen the agricultural industry. Donors included former state FFA officers, current FFA members, businesses, and individuals who chose to give jackets in memory FFA members and loved ones who’ve passed. FFA chapters receiving jackets included Belfield, Beulah, Bismarck, Bowman County, Carrington, Center, Central Cass, Des Lacs/Burlington, Dickinson, Divide County, Drake/Anamoose, Edgeley-Kulm, Enderlin, Fessenden/Bowdon, Finley/Sharon, Gackle/Steeter, Garrison, Glen Ullin, Grant County, Jamestown, Kenmare, Kindred, Lakota, Larimore, Lidgerwood, Lisbon, Minot members with their jackets. Maddock, Max, McClusky, Medina, Mohall, Napoleon, New Salem, Northern Cass, Oakes/Sargent Central, Park River, Parshall, Powers Lake, Ray, Richland 44, Rolla, Rolette, Rugby, Scranton, South Heart, St. John, Stanley, Tioga, Turtle Lake/Mercer, Wahpeton, Washburn, Watford City, Williston, Wishek, and Wyndmere.

Bowman Co. members sporting their new jackets.

The Blue Jackets Bright Futures Program began in 2006 when 47 jackets were awarded. Since then the program has grown by leaps and bounds and more than 1,300 jackets have been given away. Thank you to our sponsors for donating to this worthwhile program.

Basin Electric Cooperative Foundation & Dakota Gasification Feed North Dakota Basin Electric Cooperative and Dakota Gasification awarded the ND FFA Foundation with $5,000 to help fund garden grants to ND FFA chapters. At the Winter Leadership Conferences in January, ten chapters were awarded funds to help them expand or establish their school garden or greenhouse projects. Chapters have committed to donate harvested produce to food assistance programs throughout ND. In 2013, chapters made possible more than 12,000 pounds of fresh produce to shelters, senior centers, school hot lunch programs and several other agencies.

Foundation President Bruce Bachmeier presenting members of the Oakes/Sargent Central chapter with their garden grant.

Ten chapters were awarded grants to help their gardens thrive. These chapters were Kindred, Bismarck, Granville, Kidder County, Turtle Lake/ Mercer, Larimore, Oakes/Sargent Central, Mott/Regent, Northern Cass, and Rugby.

Alliance Pipeline Again Pledges $25,000 for ND FFA Grants Alliance Pipeline has again awarded the ND FFA Foundation with $25,000 to put toward safety and leadership programs. These funds support chapter grants to promote safety and the “Here to Live and Serve Grants” to help fund chapter community service projects. Additional funds also support student scholarships to the Washington Leadership Conference.

SAE Grant Doubles One Student’s FFA Success THANK YOU, BETH ALLEN

For three and a half years Beth Allen has aided the ND FFA Association and its members by working in the office of Ag Education in Bismarck. Beth has left this position to work for MDU. Congratulations on your new position, Beth. You are missed!

FFA members are often complimented for their ingenuity and ability to problem solve and that’s just what Nathan Ball of the Des Lacs-Burlington FFA chapter did. Nathan was looking for a product to “sell” for the 2014 Ag Sales season, and in a wise choice chose the tiller that he had purchased for his SAE project from funds he was awarded by the ND FFA Foundation’s SAE grant program. This allowed Nathan the opportunity to get to know his equipment better while gaining valuable sales experience. Good thinking Nathan!

A Note from the President—Bruce Bachmeier

On behalf of the ND FFA Foundation Board of Directors, I would like to thank our newest star partners: AT&T, International Certification Services, Lynnes Welding Training, and Monsanto. I would also like to thank the many other star partners and other donors who allow the FFA Foundation to sponsor the activities of our current FFA members. Congratulations to all of the individuals and teams who competed at the ND Winter CDEs in the Agronomy, Ag Sales and Livestock Evaluation competitions. I also would like to send a huge thank you to all the FFA advisors and chaperons who made it possible to get the members to all of these events. It has been a pleasure to see such great participation in all the different contests that I have attended this year. Hopefully spring comes soon as we all look forward to longer, warmer days. One thing that I especially look forward to in the spring is the upcoming FFA banquets. The local FFA banquets offer our parents and sponsors an excellent summary of all of great accomplishments the FFA members achieved throughout the past year. I would also like to encourage the younger FFA members to attend the local FFA banquets to learn of all the opportunities available to them. FFA members, keep up the hard work and dedication towards all the FFA activities that you are involved in. I know all of you have the dedication and skills needed to become the future leaders. Seeing the FFA members always gives me great hope for the future of agriculture. I always enjoy reading and hearing about the many accomplishments of the FFA members throughout the year. Keep up the good work. FFA members, please remember to thank everyone who has helped you achieve your goals. I look forward in seeing many of you at state convention in June. Please contact the foundation office or me with any ideas or concerns about the ND FFA Foundation.

Bruce Bachmeier

Good things come from the land. With FFA’s roots deep in ND agriculture, we’ve seen a great deal of growth. Generous donations from individuals like you can help us continue to provide and fund opportunities for our growing membership. ND boasts the highest percentage enrollment in agricultural education courses and FFA membership per populous of any other state. There is no better way to ensure this strong FFA tradition continues than to allow the land to continue to produce our future. Production-based donations to Producing Futures is helping the ND FFA Foundation better serve ND’s FFA members by providing quality programing that strives to fulfill the mission of the FFA which is to promote premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. Your gift gives every ND FFA member the opportunity to benefit from these outstanding programs, with $50 of each gift going directly to your local FFA chapter.

THANK You, donors, for your generous support during Giving Hearts Day 2014. Your gift made possible more than $16,000 to help continue and expand FFA programming throughout ND.

Congratulations, Gwen Scheresky! Gwen Scheresky of the Max chapter was recently awarded a National FFA SAE Grant. Gwen’s SAE is in beef entrepreneurship. Way to represent ND!

During National FFA Week in February TSC’s Growing Scholars program generated over $447,000 for National FFA scholarships. Donations generated for the program in ND made possible a $1,000 scholarship and a gift to the ND FFA Foundation of nearly $700. Thank you, TSC!
