FFA Members Give Back Hundreds of FFA members attending the 2013 winter leadership conferences in Bismarck helped make more than 180 fleece blankets for the ND chapter of Project Linus. Project Linus donates blankets to organizations that assist children and teens in crisis situations. The state’s only active Project Linus chapter is in Fargo. This chapter receives requests for an average of 200 blankets per month. Students listened to music and visited with other members from around the state while assembling blankets. For more information about Project Linus and how you or your organization can help, go to www.orgsites.com/nd/projectlinusfargo/. Special thanks to the ND FFA Association, Richland 44 FFA, Beulah FFA, Minot FFA Alumni, and the ND FFA Foundation for donating funds for materials and funds to ship these blankets.

The label attached by Project Linus volunteers to blankets made by the ND FFA.

Students Receive SAE Grants Thirty-one ND FFA members from across the state were awarded grants of $500 to $1000 to put toward the establishment or expansion of their supervised agricultural experience projects (SAEs). SAE grants were awarded through funds from the ND FFA Foundation to these students during the state’s Winter Leadership Conferences in Bismarck on January 5-6. Funding for these grants was made available in 2006 when the ND FFA Foundation was gifted farmland from a trust set up by Fridjov Bakk over 20 years ago. Funds generated from the farmland make possible the following awards: Beginning and Expansion SAE Grants, college scholarships for those going into production agriculture or agriculture education, and tuition grants for clients starting the ND Farm Business Management program. Grant funds will help students like Cole Gevetzky from Rugby expand his small flock of chickens and provide feed and other necessities and Kaleb Westad from Maddock who has a small swine operation. Kaleb plans to buy a scale to weigh his animals and get his auctioneering license to help with the family’s auctioneering business. Beginning SAE grant winners were Tim Fischer (Bowman County), Joshua Geinert (Edgeley/Kulm), Deserae Welinger (Fessenden/Bowdon), Tayla Hoherz (Grant County), Lane Bachmeier (Granville), Caleb Cross (Granville), Sheyenne Freitag (Kindred), Emma Maddock (Kindred), Nathan Steffan (Lakota), Haley Anderson (Lisbon), Kylee Myers

(Lisbon), Kyler Westad (Maddock), Cheyenne Jacobson (Max), Katelyn Long (Napoleon), and Mariah Weigel (Napoleon). Expansion SAE grant winners included Jason Brandvold (Bottineau), Haley Koenig (Carrington), Audra Montgomery (Carrington), Brock Hagemeister (Fessenden/Bowdon), Paula Worthey (Grant County), Kamron Matejcek (Lakota), Kacy Smith (Lisbon), Kaleb Westad (Maddock), Jessica Fleck (Mandan), Gwen Scheresky (Max), Logan Hoffmann (Medina), Madeline Solemsaas ( Mohall), Bailey Bitz (Napoleon), Angela Rose Leier (Napoleon), Nicole Atkinson (Rugby), and Cole Genetzky (Rugby). (Scranton), Tyrel Johnson & Fancy Reynolds (Stanley), Clay Jorgenson (Watford City).

ND FFA Foundation Awards $2,000 in Tuition Scholarships for Farm Business Management Program The Bakk Trust has enabled the ND FFA Foundation to expand its programs to include helping new farmers or ranchers attain farm business education. This year’s recipients of the $500 tuition scholarships for Farm Business Management Programs were: Andrew Holle from Mandan Justin Smith from Monango Jacob Breker from Havana Paul E Just from West Fargo Elizabeth Grudowski from Mott

A Note from the President—Bruce Bachmeier On behalf of the ND FFA Foundation board of directors, I would like to thank our newest star partners, BNSF Railway, Nodak Mutual Insurance, Summers, Wheat Growers and RDO. I would also like to thank the many other new and existing donors who allow the FFA Foundation to sponsor the many activities of our current FFA members. Hopefully spring comes soon as our March weather has reminded us of January. We living in North Dakota really appreciate the longer warmer days as spring nears. One thing that I especially look forward to in the spring is the upcoming FFA banquets. The local FFA banquets offer our parents and sponsors an excellent summary of all of great accomplishments the FFA members achieved throughout the past year. I would also like to encourage the younger FFA members to attend the local FFA banquets to learn of all the opportunities available to them. Congratulations to all of the individuals and teams that have been competing these last three months in the Agronomy, Ag Sales and Livestock Career Development Events. I also would like to send a huge thank you to all the FFA advisors and chaperones; you made it possible to get the members to all of these events. It has been a pleasure to see such great

participation in all the different contests that I have attended this year. To all of the upcoming graduating FFA members: I know all of you have the dedication and skills needed to become the future leaders in our communities, state and nation. The leadership and practical skills you have developed in the past years will provide many successes for future students, families, farms and businesses. Seeing the FFA members always gives me great hope for the future of agriculture. I always enjoy reading and hearing about the many accomplishments of the FFA members throughout the year. Keep up the good work. FFA members, please remember to thank everyone who has helped you achieve your goals. I look forward to seeing many of you at state convention in June. Please contact the foundation office or me with any ideas or concerns about the ND FFA Foundation. Bruce Cutting blankets for Project Linus.

Special thanks to:

Lincoln Electric Company who has pledged to supply the 2013 winning Ag Mechanics Team with a new welder. Randi Moore & Amanda Buynak-Huettl

Ram Trucks for their “So God Made a Farmer” Superbowl ad that raised awareness of agriculture and the FFA. Online voting for the ad led to Ram donating $1 million to the National FFA hunger initiative “Feeding the World– Starting at Home.” Congratulations to the 2013 FFA Alumni Raffle Winners
