North Dakota Members, A Force at 89th National FFA Convention More than 500 ND FFA members ascended on the streets of Indianapolis, IN on October 19 for the start of the 89th National FFA Convention. ND members joined more than 64,000 of their peers and supporters of the FFA to celebrate the opportunities FFA provides. Members represented their states in various career development events from Agricultural Sales to Veterinary Science. Others made the trek to Indy to don their jackets for the final time to accept their American FFA Degree. If you have ever doubted the power of this blue jacket, you haven’t witnessed the National FFA Convention. FFA’s membership has now grown to an astounding 649,335 members in 7,859 chapters! But do not worry, ND members are not lost in these numbers. Each year on the national stage our career development teams, leadership development individuals, and degree earners make others sit up and take notice. This year ND boasts a National American Star Farmer Finalist in Tysen Rosenau of Carrington and is home to the National Champion Agricultural Sales Team from Napoleon. ND has celebrates ten gold teams and four silver teams as well as several top ten individuals. Congratulations, members and advisors, on a great 89th National FFA Convention!

Rosenau National American Star Farmer Finalist Tysen Rosenau of the Carrington FFA Chapter was named a finalist for one of the most prestigious awards recognized by the National FFA Organization, the American Star Farmer. The American Star Awards represent the best of the best among thousands of American FFA Degree recipients. Recognized are FFA members who have developed outstanding agricultural skills and competencies through supervised agricultural experience (SAE) programs; earned an American FFA Degree, the highest level of achievement the organization bestows upon a member; and met agricultural education, leadership, and scholarship requirements. Rosenau began his SAE program by working on his family’s farm. He started his own crop production enterprise with 138 acres of soybeans in 2011. He has expanded his operation over the past five years to now include 1,200 acres of soybeans, 200 acres of corn, and 3,100 acres of custom spraying. Rosenau has also been actively involved in the Carrington FFA Chapter by participating on the farm business management team and attending the Washington Leadership Conference and was the 2014 National Proficiency Winner in the area of Grain Production. Rosenau is a graduate of Bismarck State College and lives in Carrington with his wife, Markie. Other finalists included Tony Phillip Lopes of the Gustine FFA Chapter in California, Evan Schaefer of the Miami Trace FFA Chapter in Ohio, and winner Tyler Jacob Schnaithman of the Garber FFA Chapter in Oklahoma.

More than $23,000 was raised at the annual FFA auction held at the ND State Fair in Minot, thanks to the generosity of the donors listed below. The foundation also hosted a reception for advisors, past and present, following the auction. This year’s auction also showcased the 3rd Annual State Officer Auction Basket Challenge. More than eight past ND state officer teams competed for the title and “baby bison”, crowning them the highest earning team. It was a close competition, but for the second year in a row the title and traveling trophy went to the 1991-92 team. Daryl Lies and Bridgette (Hoffmeyer) Readel were in the audience to accept the baby bison on the team’s behalf. Each year funds generated from the auction support travel to National FFA Convention for deserving ND FFA members who have earned their way by winning career development events (CDEs) and proficiencies based on success in their supervised agricultural experiences (SAEs). Funds also support scholarships to Washington Leadership Conference presented by the ND FFA Alumni.

Thank you for your support!

100th Anniversary of the Smith-Hughes Act of 1917 By The National Council for Agricultural Education

In the early 1900s schooling in America was out of touch with the real world in which the students’ lived. Education was characterized by “book learning”, there was a zealous emphasis on classical subjects such as Latin and Greek, and rote memorization was the mode of instruction. Few students stayed in school past the eighth grade. In 1908-09 of all the students in school, 93% were in elementary school, 4% were in high school, and 3% were in college. The editors of Wallace’s Farmer magazine declared in 1905 that we need to abandon “the cut-anddried formula of a period when a man was ‘educated’ only when he knew Greek and Latin” . An editorial in Hoard’s Dairyman stated that education was “as it was 60 years ago in our boyhood, so it is today in 99 out of 100 schools. Not a grain of progress that will help the country boy to a better understanding of the problem of agriculture.” In 1904 a school superintendent in Illinois asked “Why not a course of training in the country school for the country boy which shall teach him more about the country life about him? Along with his study of the kangaroo, the bamboo and cockatoo, why not study the animals of the farm…” There were similar sentiments in the city. Schools were not meeting the needs of boys and girls in the city either. did.

When one realizes that 72% of the population lived in rural America in 1910, it should be apparent that education needed to change. And it

Between 1900 and 1915 many schools across the country started teaching agriculture. But it was a sporadic, disjointed effort. It was often “book agriculture”, had no hands-on learning component, and was taught by ill-prepared teachers. However, the situation changed for the better when Congress passed the Smith-Hughes Act of 1917. This act provided federal funds to support the teaching of agriculture, home economics, and the trades in the public schools of America. There were provisions for the training of teachers and for supervision of this new type of education. The legislation called for hands-on learning. As a result of this act a cohesive, sound national system of education in career and technical education was developed. When one looks back over the 100 years of progress in agricultural education (and career and technical education) stimulated by the SmithHughes Act, the results are dramatic. Literally millions of young people and adults have had their lives changed forever for the better as a result of their involvement in agricultural and career education. Not only have individuals benefited in numerous ways from this act, society as a whole has benefited. American agriculture clothes and feeds the world.

It is appropriate that we celebrate the Smith-Hughes Act on its 100th Anniversary in 2017. Who Were Smith and Hughes? Hoke Smith was born in North Carolina in 1855 and was educated by his father who was a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. When Hoke was 16, the family moved to Atlanta. He read for the law and passed the bar exam at the age of 17. Hoke Smith had an illustrious career in public service. He was the U.S. Secretary of the Interior (1893-1896), Governor of Georgia (1907-1909, 1911), and a United States Senator (1911-1920). He was also a skilled personal injury lawyer and newspaper owner (Atlanta Journal). He used the newspaper as a political platform. As president of the Atlanta Board of Education, he introduced vocational training into the public schools. While governor he increased public school funding by 30%, established the juvenile court system, improved child labor conditions, and established the State Board of Education. Not only is Smith known for his support of the Smith-Hughes Act, he was also involved in passage of the Smith-Lever Act which established the Cooperative Extension Service. He died in 1931. Mr. Hughes was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1909 to 1917. He attended the University of Georgia and later served as a trustee. He was a farmer and railroad executive. His ties to agriculture were numerous. He served as President of the Georgia State Agricultural Society and of the Georgia Fruit Growers Association. He was the owner of the Magnolia Orchard and the Georgia Fruit Land Company. He was also one of the founders of the Macon, Dublin & Savannah Railroad. His home, Magnolia Plantation, is located on Highway 80 in Danville, GA. In 1977, Dudley Hughes was named to the National Agricultural Hall of Fame along with Eli Whitney as the sixth and seventh members of the most honored agriculturalists in American history, joining George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington Carver, Cyrus McCormick, and Justin Morrill. He was born in Jeffersonville, Twiggs County, GA on October 10, 1848. He died January 20, 1927.

FFA Serve Third Annual Banquet in a Field ND State officers and members from Wyndmere, Kindred, Enderlin and Bismarck chapters advocated for agriculture by helping serve the third annual Banquet in a Field hosted by Common Ground in cooperation with Peterson Farms Seed in August at Peterson Farms Seed near Prosper, N.D. More than 100 people enjoyed a five-course meal prepared by Sarello's & The Lost Italian and the NDSU BBQ Bootcamp. Banquet in a Field allowed consumers to connect with North Dakota agriculture by touring crop plots, tasting appetizers featuring these crops, engaging in conversations with farmers who grow the crops, and asking questions about food production. The crop plots, planted by Peterson Farms Seeds, included potatoes, flax, canola, sugarbeets, pinto beans, soybeans, corn, sunflowers, durum, spring wheat, and barley.

Oh behalf of the ND FFA Foundation board of directors, I would like to thank all of our sponsors and supporters. Funds received by the foundation allow many students the financial assistance to enhance their education. Congratulations also to all members, advisors, and staff representing the ND FFA Association at the National FFA Convention including Tysen Rosenau who was a 2016 American Star Farmer Finalist. Also congratulations to the Napoleon FFA Chapter for being national champions in the Agricultural Sales CDE!!! Congratulations go out to our American Degree recipients. On a personal note, congratulations go to my two sons, Verlin and Donovan Zacharias, for receiving their American Degrees at Nationals; I wish I could have been there. Now on to business: the Supporting the Blue, Going for Gold virtual race is November 25– December 2. Sign up and have some fun! Go to http://www.ndffafoundation.com and register today. January sees the annual Winter Leadership Conference in Bismarck. At this conference, members will be awarded jackets from generous donors to the Blue Jackets Bright Futures program and receive SAE grants to start or expand their projects. In February, get your scholarship applications in. Funding for these scholarships was made available in 2006 when the ND FFA Foundation was gifted farmland from a trust set up by Fridjov Bakk over 20 years ago. Funds generated from the farmland make it possible for the following awards: Beginning and Expansion SAE Grants, college scholarships for those going into production agriculture, agriculture, and agriculture education, and tuition grants for clients starting the ND Farm Business Management program. Also in February help us celebrate Giving Hearts Day, February 9th, 2017. Please help us tell the ND FFA story and promote our mission by visiting impactgiveback.org on this day. We are looking for individuals and companies who would be willing to act as match fund donors at $1,000 or more for this great initiative. Other foundation activities have also been incredibly successful this past year. The Annual ND FFA Foundation & Alumni Auction held at the ND State Fair was a success again thanks to all of our donors and supporters. For the upcoming holiday season don’t forget to shop at Smile.Amazon.com. This is another easy way to pledge your support to the ND FFA Foundation (see page 10 for more details), and remember the ND FFA Endowment when planning your annual giving. The very best to all of you for a wonderful holiday season and thank you for your continued support!!

Saewert Addresses ND Petroleum Council Members of the ND Petroleum Council (NDPC) heard from Brock Sawert, the 201516 State FFA Secretary, at their annual meeting in Minot on September 20. Brock addressed the group and gave them a look into a day-in-the-life of a ND ag education instructor and FFA advisor to show what the ag education curriculum has to offer the oil and energy sector. He encouraged companies in the energy and oil sector to look to the ND FFA when seeking a quality workforce, reminding participants of the meeting just how diverse and rich in, not only agricultural skills, but trade skills like welding, plumbing, and electrical our agriculture education curriculum is.

While at the NDPC annual meeting Brock was also able to personally thank Terry Wolverton with TransCanda Corporation for their company’s investment in the ND FFA. TransCanada Corporation has invested $10,000 in the ND FFA Foundation’s Community Service Grant program, “FFA is Living to Serve“. This program provides chapters with up to $500 each to help with service projects in their communities fulfilling the FFA motto, “Living to serve”. Chapters who have been awarded these funds are: Finley-Sharon, Glen Ullin, Grafton, Hebron, Kindred, Larimore, Maddock, Max, Park River, Ray, Richland 44, Rolla, South Heart, Stanley, Northern Cass, Center, Flasher, and Garrison.

Five Receive the Honorary American FFA Degree FFA’s success relies on the support of exceptional teachers, individuals, and donors who provide life-changing experiences for FFA members. This year four individuals were nominated by the ND FFA Foundation and ND FFA Association for the role they play in shaping ND FFA and the National FFA Organization. This year’s recipients of the Honorary American FFA Degree were Gary Martens, Aaron Anderson, Bruce Bachmeier, Missy Hansen, and Shawn Feiring. Gary Martens ranches near Ross and is an independent contractor gauging oil. He donates his time and talents to coach 4-H and FFA meat evaluation teams and was instrumental in developing the state 4-H meats evaluation contest. Before becoming the State Executive Secretary for Agricultural Education, Aaron Anderson followed in his father’s footsteps as a successful ag education instructor and FFA advisor. Today Anderson is the State Supervisor for Agricultural Education and the ND State FFA Advisor. Shawn Feiring is the ag educator and FFA advisor at New Salem. Missy Hansen is the ag educator and FFA advisor at Carrington. Both Feiring and Hansen have dedicated their lives to advancing agricultural advocacy and leadership development among their students. In addition they have coached several state winning career development teams and have earned the respect of their students and communities through their tireless dedication to the ag industry. Bruce Bachmeier of Carrington is a long-time supporter and advocate for agricultural education, has served on and chaired the ND FFA Foundation Board of Directors, acted as a volunteer judge, and has been instrumental in aligning the state’s agronomy CDE to national’s CDE among countless other activities to 2016 Honorary American promote the ND FFA. FFA Degree recipients: Shawn Feiring, Gary We congratulate these Honorary American Degree Martens, Missy Hansen, inductees and thank them for their service to the ND FFA Bruce Bachmeier, & Aaron and agriculture education!
