More than 570 ND FFA members attended National Convention.

The following pages are a recap of events from national and district competitions. This year the National FFA Convention set an all-time record for attendance with more than 63,000 in attendance! With so many FFA members in Louisville, KY it comes as no surprise to North Dakotans that our members ranked among the very best with a 14 gold metals and numerous top 10 rankings. Thank you, parents, advisors, and sponsors for your invaluable support. Our members’ success is YOUR success!

Zacharias Named National Star Farmer Finalist Vance Zacharias of the Enderlin FFA chapter represented ND in fantastic fashion as a finalist for the National Star Farmer. Zacharias earned this honor with a accumulation of work in production and marketing. His supervised agricultural experience included growing corn and soybeans near Kathryn, ND while learning the management and marketing skills vital to a successful farming operation. His parents are Vaughn and Dorinda. He is a member of the Enderlin FFA chapter, Bob Moller advisor.

85th Anniversary

North Dakota FFA FFA in North Dakota turns 85 in 2014! Eighty-five years ago North Dakota embarked on a mission to develop agricultural leaders and promote the agricultural industry for the betterment of all. We have quite a story to tell! The ND FFA Association and ND FFA Foundation are preparing a celebration for the 85th State FFA Convention and we’d like you to join us!

Tentative Schedule of Events

Thursday, June 5th, 2014 Bentson Bunker Building NDSU

A detailed schedule of events will follow as the date approaches.

Join us at 7pm for “A Living History of ND FFA” and be part of the celebration. Chapters will be recognized individually and alumni are asked to participate. A reception is also being planned. Stay-tuned for more details by watching the newsletter and checking our website and Facebook pages. Www.ndffafoundation.com or “ND FFA Foundation” on Facebook.

We Need Your Help!

In preparation for the anniversary, a commemorative book is being created, but we need your help! Due to school consolidations and other events in our history, several FFA chapters are now inactive. We’d like to include these inactive chapters in the history. If you have any information regarding a chapter that no longer exists, please contact Tam Maddock at tamra.maddock@btinet.net. These chapters are an important part of our history and we’d like to include them. We are also in need of pictures of the following ND State FFA Officer Teams: 1929-55, 1957,1959-67, and 1976 Never Doubt the Impact FFA has on its Members… Posted to Facebook by past ND FFA member and former state officer Brian Anderson of Harvey,

"I realize that I’m a little late in saying this but, I would like to give a huge shoutout to the members of North Dakota FFA. The more I hear about National Convention, its impact on members, and how well North Dakota's competing members did, the more my pride increases. This year, our FFA members proved that not only are they the best students that North Dakota has to offer, but even the best students that our nation has to offer. I am honored more and more every time I am reminded that I had the opportunity to be a member and state officer for such a talented group of students who will rise to all the occasions that are presented to them, and show our state, our nation, and our world the true meaning of effective leadership. Congratulations, all you teams. You make me and all of my fellow PSO's very proud."

Do you feel about ND FFA like Brian does? Then share those memories at the 85th Anniversary celebration. June 2014.

ISSUE

Four new ND Ag Teachers have accepted the words of the Ag Teacher's Creed as their oath to hold themselves to the highest standards of their profession for the betterment of their students.

The Ag Teachers’ Creed

I am an agricultural educator by choice and not by chance. I believe in American agriculture; I dedicate my life to its development and the advancement of its people. I will strive to set before my students by my deeds and actions the highest standards of citizenship for the community, state and nation. I will endeavor to develop professionally through study, travel and exploration. I will not knowingly wrong my fellow teachers. I will defend them as far as honesty will permit. I will work for the advancement of agricultural education and I will defend it in my community, state and nation. I realize that I am a part of the school system. I will work in harmony with school authorities and other teachers of the school. My love for youth will spur me on to impart something from my life that will help make for each of my students a full and happy future. Growing for Good A generous grant from the ND Department of Ag through the Hunger Free ND program made available funds to help five chapters with their chapter gardens. These gardens produced more than 14,000 pounds of fresh produce that was donated to several food programs throughout the state. FFA chapters utilize The Kidder County FFA gardens as part of their agricultural garden. Students donated food education curriculum, teaching valuable from their garden and operated lessons in biology, pest management, a farmers market. plant, and soil science, not to mention philanthropy. Every year thousands of pounds of fresh produce are provided to school hot lunch programs, food pantries, and retirement homes from gardens like these.

Blue Jackets Bright Futures

All you have to do is look around at an FFA event to realize how important it is to own an FFA jacket. Jackets cost money, and some students aren’t able to come up with the funds to buy one. This led to a program called Blue Jackets Bright Futures. This program collects donations from past members, individuals, and supporters of the FFA to provide students with FFA jackets that they can keep. A donation of $61 will supply one student with a jacket with his/ her name on the jacket and his/her chapter name on the back of the jacket. Last year, over 250 FFA members applied for these jackets and funds were raised to provide 230 members with jackets. It is the goal of the ND FFA Foundation to again supply 200 students with jackets this year. Please help by donating $61, so that a student will have that same pride of wearing the FFA jacket that you had as a student. Jackets will be given out at the Winter Leadership Conference in January. Please call Beth at 701-224-8390 if you are interested or send a check to ND FFA Foundation, PO Box 6002, Bismarck, ND 58506 with a note indicating that the donation be used for the Blue Jacket Bright Futures program. Donations are due Dec. 10.

Consider an End of the Year Gift for the FFA As the end of the year draws near, many pause to review, reflect and plan for the future; thoughtfully addressing how FFA and agriculture education has changed their life, their son or daughter, or maybe the life of a grandchild. FFA offers unique leadership training for all facets of life. Has FFA touched your life? If so, why not help the FFA foundation provide programs and services to reach and inspire thousands of youth you may never know. Now is the time to begin taking stock of your 2013 financial situation. Many people find that a gift to the FFA can play an important role in reducing their tax bill. Taxpayers who itemize all allowed deductions such as home mortgage interest and medical expenses may also deduct all gifts of cash and certain other property up to 50% of their adjusted gross income. The most common form of charitable gift is cash. However, gifts of stock, life insurance policies, real estate, overstocked inventories, and many other items of value can ease your tax burden. We trust your thoughts are with the FFA when you make the best financial and philanthropic choices for 2013. Should you want to contribute, please call us at 701-224-8390 or drop us a note at PO Box 6022, Bismarck, ND 58506. If you are interested in making a substantial contribution in the form of life insurance, establishing a trust or including FFA in your will; please consult with your attorney or tax advisor.

You Never Really Outgrow It!

The FFA is not an organization that you can forget about once you’ve left high school! It is always there - the memories, the friends, the leadership skills you’ve learned, the wood projects. We want you to share that pride with others around you and are asking you to “Bring your jacket to work” during the National FFA Week from February 15-22, 2014. Display your jacket on the back of your work chair, hang it in your car for all to see, put it on your coat rack at work. We know that it may take some time to find your jacket — but it’s still there; maybe in the attic, in that back closet, or in that box of high school memories. Show everyone you know that you support the FFA and that you are

FOREVER BLUE!

A Note from Foundation President Bruce Bachmeier On behalf of the ND FFA Foundation board of directors, I would like thank all sponsors and supporters of the ND FFA Foundation. Your generous donations allow us to make many programs available. A special thank you goes out to all the new and existing Star Partners. The funds received by the foundation allow many students financial assistance to enhance their education through the FFA. This year I had the opportunity to attend the National FFA Convention. It was amazing to see all the blue jackets and the excitement and passion the members and guests had for the FFA organization. Congratulations to all members, advisors, and staff representing the ND FFA Association at National Convention. North Dakota FFA was well represented in many different CDE areas, Talent competition, science fair, star program and other areas. FFA members, thanks for believing in the FFA organization and for competing to the best of your ability. I hope all the goals you set for yourself and team were achieved at the National FFA Convention. FFA members, please take time to fill out one of the many grant and scholarship applications available through the ND FFA Foundation. Please contact Beth or Tam if you have questions about any of the great programs. I look forward to seeing many of you at the winter leadership conferences and throughout the winter at CDE events. Please feel to contact me if you have any suggestions, questions or concerns about the ND FFA Foundation. -Bruce
