Service Challenge

By Phillip Wanner (State Secretary)

On the days of September 14 & 15, the North Dakota Sate FFA Officer Team issued a service challenge to all FFA chapters across the state! These were the kickoff days, and we were very impressed with the results! Chapters around North Dakota found some sort of community service to do in their community, emphasizing the FFA motto: Living to Serve. The purpose of this challenge was to get chapters more involved in their communities, and we saw nothing but results! The State Officer Team split up around the state for these events, visiting different chapters, and helping them serve in their respective communities. SW Region VP Andrew Kreidt and I had the privilege of traveling to the FFA chapter in Maddock, North Dakota, where a lot was going on that weekend! We arrived in Maddock on Sunday, September 16th. (Maddock went above and beyond and added a third day to our kickoff weekend!) When we got there, the Maddock chapter was beginning to set up a benefit for one of their school’s employees, who had recently been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. A great meal of ham, potatoes, and coleslaw was prepared in her honor. The whole chapter did an excellent job of preparing for the benefit, serving throughout the meal, and tearing down afterwards. You could tell by just looking at all of the people attending the luncheon they were impressed with the FFA members. The community of Maddock appreciates its FFA chapter greatly, and the benefit raised much money for a great cause! Go Maddock! As if that wasn’t enough, Maddock wasn’t done. Earlier that weekend, the chapter helped to clean out a corn maze and prepare another maze with square bales in preparation for their community’s “Renaissance Festival” later in October. They also delivered Meals on Wheels to residents throughout their community! It was a great weekend for community service throughout the state! FFA chapters really impressed us throughout the weekend, performing all kinds of service in their home towns. I was wowed with my visit to Maddock and it was a fun experience for all that attended! Remember FFA members, even though we had a “weekend of service”, our organization encourages us to serve at all times! Let’s answer that call, and continue to serve throughout the upcoming year! Farm Credit Services Celebrates 36 Years of Giving to the FFA

2012 marks the 36th year Farm Credit Services of Mandan, AgCountry Farm Credit Services, and Farm Credit Services of North Dakota have donated FFA handbooks to agriculture students in area high schools. Approximately 80 high school agricultural education programs in North Dakota and northwest Minnesota received over 2,600 student handbooks. Official FFA Student Handbooks are presented to first year FFA Greenhands for use throughout their FFA career. “The FFA Handbook is a resource I rely on every year and thanks to Farm Credit Services, it shows up every year ready to use,” states FFA advisor and ag education instructor Tim Aichele of Beulah. Jordan Robert, a member of the Rolla FFA chapter, said, “It’s like a Bible for the FFA.” Farm Credit Services has provided funding for the FFA Handbook since its inception in 1977, promoting the mission of the National FFA Organization. Welcome to ND’s Newest FFA Chapter Edgeley—Kulm, Advisor Cameron Young

As the end of the year draws near, many pause to review, reflect and plan for the future; thoughtfully addressing how FFA and agriculture education has changed their life, their son or daughter, or maybe the life of a grandchild. FFA offers unique leadership training for all facets of life. Has FFA touched your life? If so, why not help the FFA foundation provide programs and services to reach and inspire thousands of youth you may never know. Now is the time to begin taking stock of your 2012 financial situation. Many people find that a gift to the FFA can play an important role in reducing their tax bill. Taxpayers who itemize all allowed deductions such as home mortgage interest and medical expenses may also deduct all gifts of cash and certain other property up to 50% of their adjusted gross income. The most common form of charitable gift is cash. However, gifts of stock, life insurance policies, real estate, overstocked inventories, and many other items of value can ease your tax burden. We trust your thoughts are with the FFA when you make the best financial and philanthropic choices for 2012. Should you want to contribute, please call us at 701-224-8390 or drop us a note at PO Box 6022, Bismarck, ND 58506. If you are interested in making a substantial contribution in the form of life insurance, establishing a trust or including FFA in your will; please consult with your attorney or tax advisor.

As the newest Star Partners! Thank you for making an investment in agricultural education!!! Should your company be a Star Partner? The Star Partner Program allows companies to partner with Team Ag Ed. Members of Team Ag Ed include ND FFA Alumni, NDSU Ag Education, ND Farm Business Management, ND Post Secondary Agricultural Students (PAS), North Dakota Association of Agricultural Educators (NDAAE), and the ND FFA. Star Partners gain exposure through all of these great organizations simply by partnering with the ND FFA Foundation. If your company would like to become a Star Partner, contact Beth or Tamra today at the foundation.

Your Gift X 2? It’s easy to make your gift to the ND FFA Foundation worth twice as much. Simply ask your employer if they have a gift matching program for nonprofit organizations. Many companies have gone to an “Employee Matching” fund policy versus making donations to individual nonprofits. These companies have chosen to let you, their valued employee, decide where your company invests its charitable giving budget. Most employee matching programs work on the following premise: You choose to give to a nonprofit of your choice and your employer matches those funds up to a certain dollar amount. So ask your employer today about employee matching and how you can make your gift worth twice as much!

DuPont Pioneer Gives $20,000 Gift to ND Team Ag Ed! The North Dakota FFA Foundation and South Dakota FFA Foundation each received a $20,000 education grant from DuPont Pioneer, presented during the National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis. The grants are part of $80,000 in grants presented to state FFA foundations within the Pioneer Northern Business Unit, which includes Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. They will be used for leadership development and agricultural education activities. “We are extremely grateful to DuPont Pioneer for supporting the FFA and the agricultural education community in North Dakota,” said Beth Bakke Stenehjem, executive director of the North Dakota FFA Foundation. “This collaboration will allow for much needed programming and growth in all areas of agricultural education. It also will allow for increased educational opportunities in middle school and high school programs, post-secondary programs, and even aid to beginning farmers through the North Dakota Farm Business Management program.” “DuPont Pioneer is pleased to support the North Dakota FFA Foundation,” said Patrick Yockey, DuPont Pioneer business director for the Northern Business Unit. “We strongly believe that the development and education of FFA leaders is essential to our industry as we all strive to meet the growing global demand for food.”

Blue Jackets Bright Futures All you have to do is look around at an FFA event to realize how important it is to own an FFA jacket. Jackets cost money, and some students aren’t able to come up with the funds to buy one. This led to a program called Blue Jackets Bright Futures. This program collects donations from past members, individuals, and supporters of the FFA to provide students with FFA jackets that they can keep. A donation of $57 will supply one student with a jacket with his/her name on the jacket and his/her chapter name on the back of the jacket. Last year, over 250 FFA members applied for these jackets and funds were raised to provide 206 members with jackets. It is the goal of the ND FFA Foundation to again supply 200 students with jackets this year. Please help by donating $57, so that a student will have that same pride of wearing the FFA jacket that you had as a student. Jackets will be given out at the Winter Leadership Conference in January. Please call Beth at 701-224-8390 if you are interested or send a check to ND FFA Foundation, PO Box 6002, Bismarck, ND 58506 with a note indicating that the donation be used for the Blue Jacket Bright Futures program. Donations are due Dec. 1.

You Never Really Outgrow It! The FFA is not an organization that you can forget about once you’ve left high school! It is always there - the memories, the friends, the leadership skills you’ve learned, the wood projects. We want you to share that pride with others around you and are asking you to “Bring your jacket to work” during the National FFA Week from February 16-23, 2013. Display your jacket on the back of your work chair, hang it in your car for all to see, put it on your coat rack at work. I know that it may take some time to find your jacket — but it’s still there; maybe in the attic, in that back closet, or in that box of high school memories. Show everyone you know that you support the FFA and that you are

The Importance of Robert’s Rules of Order The Ward County Farm Bureau had a wonderful surprise for the top two teams, competing in the FFA District 2 Parliamentary Procedure competition in Minot in early October. Monte Bloms who presented the $500 and $750 checks to the top 2 teams said, “We recognize the importance of parliamentary procedure, not only on our board but on any board. From the county level down to township boards and church boards, we all use it on some level. Being a former president of my local FFA chapter and participant in the District Parliamentary Procedure competition, I know how much time and effort the officers and advisors put in to it. Our board felt this was a great way to encourage and support the leaders of tomorrow.” The first place team was from the Max FFA Chapter who received $750, and the second place $500 check went to Garrison. Amanda Huettl, Max advisor, said, “Receiving the $750 grant from Ward County Farm Bureau was such a great surprise! Parliamentary Procedure is such an important and useful tool for students to learn and use throughout their life. Hours of work and dedication go into learning parliamentary procedure and learning it to the level these students do. It is great to be able to reward them for their hard work . We used the funds to pay for all the expenses to compete at the State FFA Parliamentary Procedure event in Bismarck. Additional funds will be given to the Parliamentary Procedure team in the form of scholarships.” Max went on to win the State Parliamentary Procedure competition in Bismarck on October 10 and received a Silver Award at the National FFA Convention. Team members Jordan Tomlinson and Gwen Scheresky earned Accredited

Parliamentarian honors.
