“We’re growing a movement as we share knowledge, celebrate healing success stories, provide access to evidence-based resources and create meaningful connections while helping today’s consumers, whole-health providers, mission-aligned nonprofits, businesses and advertisers prosper,” says Whittle. “Together, we’re addressing global, local and personal issues—the nexus for consumer consciousness, healing and hope.”

Dr. Tim Frank Joins Transformational Medicine

Tucson’s

Transformational Medicine is happy to introduce Dr. Tim Frank to the practice. Frank’s Integrative Medical Practice focuses on balancing and empowering the individual’s physical, psycho/emotional and spiritual being. The integration of Naturopathic and Western medicine in his practice provides patients the opportunity to benefit from strong suits of each medical approach. His goal is to identify and treat the underlying cause of illness.

“Every person can touch their ‘inner physician’ to unlock and harmonize their entire being, restoring balance to the body. The goal is to awaken the healing power from within,” says Frank. Godson to a Cherokee medicine man, Frank spent years apprenticing with Native American shamans. His powerful ceremonies and healing journeys have received international recognition. Frank provides a unique offering of acupuncture, massage, spinal alignment, holographic memory resolution and Shamanic drumming and chanting.

For more than two decades, Frank has been offering Holographic Memory Resolution (HMR), which allows for rapid release of past trauma and unresolved feelings in the unconscious mind that hold you back from growing into your full potential. This body-mind approach is a non-traumatizing therapeutic technique that teaches selfhealing, allowing you to resolve painful emotions that are often at the root of chronic disease. Through HMR, it is possible to relieve or eliminate post-traumatic stress, chronic pain, depression and anxiety.

A Day of Transformation with Don Jose Ruiz

Exciting

events featuring Native American Indian arts are coming to Tucson this month.

From January 29 through February 12, see the American Indian Arts Exposition, an official event of the Tucson Rock & Gem Show. Then, the Southwest American Indian Collector’s Expo will take place on February 24, 25 and 26. Both events will feature turquoise, seed beads in 60 colors and various sizes and authentic Indian crafts from 60 tribal nations.

The co-operative sponsors various events such as powwows, cultural festivals and information services, and publishes the Native American Directory for Canada, Alaska and the U.S.

The co-operative focuses on traditional and contemporary Native American techniques in arts and crafts including jewelry, basketry, wood and stone carving, weaving, pottery, beadwork, quill-work, rug-making, tanning and leather work, dance regalia, cookery, music and more.

Come awaken your spirit with Don Jose Ruiz, co-author of The Fifth Agreement: A Practical Guide to Self-Mastery, where he will offer his Toltec traditions combined with his brilliant modern expression to show you how to apply the Agreements for a better life, on February 10, at 7pm, at Solar Culture Gallery. Ruiz will share the experiences that helped him transform his life, including the teachings from his grandmother, father and some of the stories that inspired his first book.

Like his father, Don Miguel Ruiz (author of The Four Agreements), Don Jose is dedicating his life to sharing the ancient Toltec wisdom by translating it into practical, everyday life concepts that promote transformation through truth, love and common sense. If your world is full of suffering and drama, you can change it, because you are the one who created it. The Fifth Agreement prepares us to return to our innate wisdom, and live our lives based on truth.

Learn how to: become aware of how you confuse who you are with what you know; gain awareness of how your agreements have created your reality; let go of the fear of what you are without your beliefs; create a happier and more rewarding story for yourself; and make new agreements that are more in line with your true Authentic Self.

Cost: $45 in advance, $50 at the door. Location: Solar Culture Gallery, 31 E Toole Ave, Tucson. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit DonJoseRuiz.brownpapertickets.com, MiguelRuiz.com/don-jose-ruiz or SolarCulture.org.

Local cover artist Lisa “LaLa” Agababian, born and raised in New York City, is mostly a self-taught ceramic artist currently creating purposeful art full-time in Tucson. Although her fascination with clay started at a very early age, it was decades later that this medium proved to be a lifesaver for her as well. Her ”Ceramic heART Wall Sculptures" are colorful expressions of her authentic, raw, naked, vulnerable… strength, as she experiences this fabulous, wondrous, and sometimes very scary, and painful, precious, human life. Although she continues to create fine, functional, whimsical wares, her Ceramic Heart Wall Sculptures give a true voice to the whole spectrum of being human and shines with more than a modicum of timelessness and humor as well.

Fleeting moments of intimacy in nature; her experience with the depths of her own being; as well as her great love, compassion, and connection with other sentient beings   is what inspires her art today. She states, "The mysterious kiln gods always have a hand in my work which undoubtedly adds to the  magic of every piece", although all are designed, hand-formed, and painted by her, with low fire colorful glazes, crystal glazes, under-glazes, metallic/luster overgrazes, and anything else she can embellish a piece with, to add to the depth, beauty, and uniqueness desiring to be expressed. Her hearts have taken on a life of their own and also draw attention to concerns affecting the greater whole, as well as inspire, uplift, and awaken others to the magnificence within and all around us.

Deciphering Egg Carton Labels

There are many egg choices in the grocery store with different labels— cage-free, free-range, pasture-raised, organic. Here is what these terms mean.

CAGE-FREE

Cage-free eggs are defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as eggs laid by hens that are able to roam vertically and horizontally in indoor spaces while having access to fresh food and water. Although this method of egg production is considered to be more humane than the longtime standard of battery cages, some cage-free farms may restrict outdoor grazing, and their hens’ nutrition may not be as good as that of hens allowed outside.

FREE-RANGE

Free-range hens follow the same rules as cage-free, with the added requirement of having access to the outdoors during their laying cycle. How much time the hens are permitted to spend outside is open to interpretation, although some animal welfare groups define it as at least six hours per day of outdoor access with at least two square feet of outdoor space per bird.

PASTURE-RAISED

This term isn’t defined by the USDA, but if eggs come with a third-party animal welfare certification seal, more robust standards of care have been applied. Certified Humane and American Humane Certified both expect pasture-raised, egg-laying hens to have at least 108 square feet of pasture with live vegetation, and for those fields to be rotated so that fresh vegetation is always available. Having access to the outdoors year-round means they must also have access to a barn for protection from predators. Pasture-raised (and organic eggs described below) often have darker, yellower yolks and contain less cholesterol, which may be due to the continuous access to live vegetation and because they have more omega-3 fatty acids.

ORGANIC

Organic egg-laying hens must be provided with 100 percent organic feed without the use of pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. They must also be able to graze outside for at least 120 days per year and are given antibiotics only in the event of an infection.

ADDITIONAL TERMS

Local or locally produced eggs must originate less than 400 miles from the processing facility or within the state the eggs originated from and were processed in.

Vegetarian fed ensures that no animal byproducts were used to feed the hens. Grass fed is not defined by the USDA.

No hormones is a misleading term, as the USDA has banned the use of hormones, and all eggs are hormone-free.

Reforestation Is More Than Planting Trees

The United Nations designated 2021 to 2030 the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration to prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and in every ocean. To that end, the European Union and 26 nations, along with donor support, recently pledged $16 billion to protect, restore and sustainably manage forests. A significant portion of the monies will be spent on reforestation.

Many reforestation projects focus on the number of trees planted, with less attention to how well they survive, how diverse the resulting forests are or how much carbon they store. A study of data from 176 reforestation sites found that on average only 44 percent of newly planted trees last more than five years, with some sites reporting a sapling survival rate of less than 20 percent.

Several studies have explored ways to improve survival rates. Promising measures include planting near mature trees, fencing out cattle, improving soil conditions, planting native species first to pave the way for other tree species and involving local people to support reforestation efforts.

2023 ANNUAL HEALTH & WELLNESS GUIDE

Medical Thermography for Heart Health

Medical Thermography is used as a preventative test that can see both hyperthermia and hypothermia (hot is red and cold is blue) and “dysfunctional” asymmetrical blood flow patterns. A reduction of blood flow to the heart causes temperatures to be cold. Hypothermia (too cold) pattern is normally seen in the left lower upper back, and left chest front view for heart concerns in females. Heart concerns for males are evaluated as hypothermia (too cold) pattern seen in the left chest front view.

Early-stage disease detection is another area in which thermography excels. For instance, take heart disease prevention. Thermography screenings can assess heart function and detect inflammation and “dysfunctional” asymmetrical blood flow in the carotid arteries (which may be a precursor for stroke and blood clots). When “dysfunctional” asymmetrical blood flow and inflammation of the carotid is visible, a doctor may order additional testing. Earlier detection of a heart problem could save lives.

Most heart attacks are caused by blockages in the large arteries of the heart. But in up to 15 percent of cases in which people experience symptoms such as chest pain and shortness of breath, there are no significant blockages. These little-understood heart attacks, known as myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCAs), can still cause heart damage and are also three times more likely to occur in women.

Sometimes women visit a hospital with heart attack symptoms and, after they get tested, they’re told they didn’t have a heart attack. That’s because an angiogram — the test normally used to evaluate patients with heart attack symptoms— may not reveal the underlying cause. Without knowing what’s causing patients’ symptoms, doctors aren’t able to treat them without further diagnostics.

Medical Thermography may be able to reveal critical physiological changes and “dysfunctional” asymmetry blood flow patterns long before they can progress and form into a structure or disease within the body. Thermography is the only medical test which allows one to see the root cause of their pain and current health safely, with no radiation, no body contact and no pain.

ONE KIND WORD

Practicing Heart-Centered

Kindness

Being “heart-centered” is trending these days. The meaning of this seems obvious, or does it? Being heart-centered can be elusive, so how can we bypass the superficiality of it and act from its wisdom?

You. Yes, you who are reading this right now: rub your hands together, up and down to create friction. Once your hands are warm, place them over your heart center—not the spot over your anatomical heart, but the center of your chest. Close your eyes and, for just three of the deepest breaths you’ve taken all day, notice how you feel.

To come from a place of feeling versus thinking takes the awareness of our bodies. In our modern, fast-paced climate, it is so easy to overlook this, when our minds seem to move faster than our body’s ability to adapt to our surroundings and to the people that we encounter. In Eastern traditions, the heart is not considered separate from the mind, but is considered another type of mind: the “heart-mind”.

Kindness and being heart-centered might come hand-in-hand. To feel what’s going on is to provide compassion and empathy for others and ourselves, even if the feeling is uncomfortable. In this

space, we are connected to ourselves and with everyone else, as none of our feelings are so unique that we feel them alone. Sharing these emotions with others, verbally or non-verbally, allows us to feel connected and give others an opportunity to provide support when we need it most.

So, what is kindness? Kind shares the root of the word “kin”, meaning family, and is also connected with the meanings of “natural, native and innate”. So many of us are walking around feeling like we aren’t enough, that we are inherently bad. But if we stopped to really look at why we feel that way—is it not true that at the center of that feeling is a sense of discon-

nection, to us, our communities, nature, a sense of transcendence? To feel our truth is to be connected with everyone throughout time. And to feel seen and heard in our truth takes it to another level.

When we don’t feel connected to others, it can feel like a life-or-death situation. As social beings, being left out or abandoned can feel like psychological death, as our bodies remember a time that not being connected to our kin meant certain death. On a physiological level, our nervous systems sense the danger and spend all of their energy communicating to us that we need to fight or run for our lives.

If one kind word could mean life or death to someone, might you consider participating in that act more often? Might it be worth it to offer yourself a little bit of kindness? And if you find that you’re moving so fast that it’s impossible to just be with yourself as you are, take one moment to connect. We’re all in this together.

Heading to the Dentist with Heart-Related Health Problems

It is important to tell the dentist about any heart-related health issues. Your mouth and heart are linked in more ways than you might expect—and failing to inform your dentist about cardiovascular problems could spell serious trouble. For your health and safety, be sure to let your dentist know if any of the below heart conditions apply to you.

Born or Developed Heart Ailments

Any heart ailment—whether past or present—should be discussed with the dentist. Many heart conditions, especially those involving the valves, come with a higher risk for a heart infection, or endocarditis. To prevent harmful oral bacteria from entering the bloodstream, speak with your heart doctor to verify if you need antibiotics prior to any dental treatment.

High Blood Pressure or High Cholesterol

Hypertension may cause faintness in the dentist’s chair while seated in a reclined position, and could also exclude you from certain procedures. If dentists are aware of this, they can make adjustments to

minimize issues. To ensure that dental work isn’t causing any negative effects, blood pressure may be monitored before and during treatment.

Heart Attack or Stroke

All dental work must be held off for six months after a heart attack, and future treatment will require your physician’s authorization if needing medication prior to dental visits. Anti-coagulants, a common medication for those who have suffered a heart attack, can prevent blood from clotting, and certain procedures or surgeries may require you to stop using the medicine beforehand. Paralysis is a common outcome of a stroke; dental professionals may also recommend more frequent visits and different dental products and techniques to maintain proper hygiene.

Angina

Often characterized as intense pain in the chest, attacks can be triggered both by dental anxiety and certain dental procedures. Dentists may call for nitroglycerin and oxygen during treatment, as well as blood pressure monitoring. If you take calcium channel blockers to combat

angina, more frequent checkups may be advised to monitor for gum overgrowth.

Use of a Pacemaker

Dental work should be avoided for a few weeks after the implantation of a pacemaker. Afterward, treatment can proceed, but it is critical to check with the doctor and even the pacemaker manufacturer for any potential electromagnetic interference that could be caused by common dental devices.

Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)

In minor cases, CHF patients may experience dry mouth due to their heart medications, and a dentist may prescribe an oral rinse and suggest certain habit modifications to combat the problem. In severe cases, CHF patients may experience serious complications if seated in a reclined position. Depending on the severity of the condition, it may be necessary for dental work to be completed in a hospital setting.

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)

While CABG may not have oral health implications, and antibiotics are usually not necessary before dental work is conducted, severe pain due to this surgery may be experienced when seated in a reclined position. Unless it is an emergency, wait six months before proceeding with any serious dental treatment.

Heart conditions—even those that have been corrected—can have a lasting impact on dental care, so stepping up efforts to prevent dental problems from happening in the first place is even more critical to maintaining good oral health. Consult with your dentist about necessary changes to your checkup schedule to help keep dental issues at bay.

Natural Virus Killer Copper can stop a virus

before it starts

Scientists have discovered a natural way to kill germs fast.

Now thousands of people are using it against viruses and bacteria that cause illness.

Colds and many other illnesses start when viruses get in your nose and multiply. If you don’t stop them early, they spread and cause misery.

Hundreds of studies confirm copper kills viruses and bacteria almost instantly just by touch.

That’s why ancient Greeks and Egyptians used copper to purify water and heal wounds. They didn’t know about viruses and bacteria, but now we do.

“The antimicrobial activity of copper is well established.” National Institutes of Health.

Scientists say copper’s high conductance disrupts the electrical balance in a microbe cell and destroys it in seconds.

The EPA recommended hospitals use copper for touch surfaces like faucets and doorknobs. This cut the spread of MRSA and other illnesses by over half, and saved lives.

The strong scientific evidence gave inventor Doug Cornell an idea. He made a smooth copper probe

with a tip to fit in the bottom of the nostril, where viruses collect.

When he felt a tickle in his nose like a cold about to start, he rubbed the copper gently in his nose for 60 seconds.

“It worked!” he exclaimed.

“The cold never happened. I used to get 2-3 bad colds every year. Now I use my device whenever I feel a sign I am about to get sick.”

He hasn’t had a cold in 10 years.

Users say:

“It works! I love it!”

“I can’t believe how good my nose feels.”

“Is it supposed to work that fast?”

“One of the best presents ever.”

“Sixteen flights, not a sniffle!”

“Cold sores gone!”

“It saved me last holidays. The kids all got sick, but not me.”

“I am shocked! My sinus cleared, no more headache, no more congestion.”

“Best sleep I’ve had in years!”

After his first success with it, he asked relatives and friends to try it. They all said it worked, so he patented CopperZap® and put it on the market.

Soon hundreds of people had tried it. 99% said copper worked if they used it right away at the first sign of germs, like a tickle in the nose or a scratchy throat.

Longtime users say they haven’t been sick in years. They have less stress, less medical costs, and more time to enjoy life.

Soon people found other things they could use it against.

The handle is curved and textured to increase contact. Copper can kill germs picked up on fingers and hands after you touch things other people have touched.

The EPA says copper works just as well when tarnished.

Dr. Bill Keevil led one of the science teams. He placed millions of viruses on a copper surface. “They started to die literally as soon as they touched it.”

Four Ways to Use Creative Thought Forms to Transform Life

Receiving a greater creative power and control of one’s mind would be an asset. Individuals use vision boards to make a picture to help them realize projects and goals. Thoughtforms can be used to expand one’s mind to imagine, to heal, to reach goals and to positively control emotions.

Here are four keys that work together to expand an individual’s lower and higher consciousness using thoughtforms. This practice develops increased sensitivity in analyses of conditions, things and people. One’s inner guide becomes more prominent in personal awareness. Step four mentions the inner guide.

• Use thoughtforms that relate to geometry. The object or shape must be based in reality, such as a circle, trapezoid, square or chalice. Begin with a small shape such as a cylinder, the size of an oatmeal box or smaller, and then expand it to envelop the whole body. The mind has the power of expansion. It takes practice as co-creator with God.

• Work with color. Embellish the thoughtform with beautiful color drawn mentally within the object. See examples at SummitUniversityPress.com/creative-thought-forms

• Give the visualization a tone. Endow the thought creation with a musical tone (high C) and picture now a solid object.

• First, purify personal consciousness with the violet flame, a spiritual light brought here by Saint Germain. Practice begins with prayer and using Violet Flame mantras (VioletFlame.com). The violet flame is a Holy Spirit energy. Each person has a direct connection to Christ, one’s inner guide (middle figure) in the chart of the divine self—the highest thoughtform; it shows your own relationship to God (top figure).

Mark Prophet recommends doing this only for five minutes, twice a day. Prepare for a larger alchemy. More tips can be found in the book Creative Thought Forms by E.C Prophet. A free workshop will be held February 26 (see calendar, page 31).

Broken Heart Syndrome

ur hearts have been through so much these last few years. Many hearts have been broken or torn apart with tragedy or grief. There actually is a disorder called Takotsubo, or Broken Heart Syndrome. Broken heart syndrome is described as a heart condition which can be brought on by stressful situations and extreme emotions, including serious physical illness or surgery. People with this condition may experience sudden chest pain or feel like they are having a heart attack. Broken heart syndrome can be temporary or last long after the heart has healed.

But the heart can be healed and strengthened with love, time and the proper support. This could include connecting to those who love you and are willing to listen, staying off junk food and alcohol, exercising, staying well hydrated and giving the heart the proper supplementation like Hawthorn Root (a gentle heart muscle strengthener).

Check with a doctor if you have pain, palpitations or a flutter that makes you feel uncomfortable. A cardiologist can do a full heart work-up, including a comprehensive listen to the heart and check of the blood pressure and heart rate. A simple test called HsCRP and an NMR lipid profile can help assess cardiovascular risk. Listen to how you feel, and honor what your heart is telling you. Now is the time to take good care of yourself and your heart.

STRESS, SCIENCE AND SOUND

How can we live in heart-centered awareness when our lives are filled with stress?

Do you know that you can relieve stress just by listening? Unfortunately, stress may also be exacerbated by listening. If we choose what we take in with our senses as carefully as we choose what we eat (assuming we are choosing foods with discretion), we create the possibility of lessening the stress in our lives, along with many other positive factors.

Sound/music is capable of calming our brain, soothing our nervous system, clearing our energy field, serving as a nat-

ural painkiller and can facilitate physical, emotional, mental and spiritual transformation. Sound and vibration have been scientifically proven through a number of studies to be effective in treating stress, depression, insomnia, ADHD and more.

The rate of change and stress in our world today is over-the-top—more than at any other time in recorded human history. Stress creates an internal environment in the body that raises blood pressure, contributes to fear and anxiety,

taxes all autonomic functions (breathing, heartbeat, circulation, digestion) and blocks “happy” hormones. Unfortunately, about 66 percent or more of all doctor visits in the U.S. are stress-related.

Research shows that sound therapy is an effective treatment for stress, primarily as a relaxation therapy, which then contributes to heart health, better moods and more. Studies have proven that music/ sound can relieve anxiety (stress) in cancer patients and pre- and post-operative patients. Certain types of sound—especially sound with overtones such as those emitted by singing bowls and gongs— soothe the vagus nerve and, through this action, the autonomic nervous system. Modern medicine can now measure, and thus confirm, the practice of sound as a means to heal. Mitchell Gaynor, MD, a clinical professor at Weill Cornell Medical College and founder of Gaynor integrative Oncology, has described that vibrational sound containing multiple overtones has such proven results. As reported in the August 2003 edition of Spirituality and Health magazine, Gaynor has had success in treating victims of lifethreatening disease, and those undergoing chemotherapy and its side effects, through sound therapy, including Tibetan bowls, crystal bowls and chanting.

Danielle Dvorak is a certified practitioner of Tibetan Sound Healing, lifelong classical musician, Reiki Master Teacher, Intuitive Energy Worker and more. Heeding Your Heart’s Desires

“Idon’t even know what I want anymore,” a brilliant, weary woman said recently. “I seem to have lost my capacity for wanting.” A lot of women have shared this sentiment in different ways.

What do you want? What are your heart’s desires? Do you know?

We are, of course, trained to tame our wants and desires. Women are wired to care for others. We tend to look out for people, consider their feelings and needs, and have as a high priority that people around us are taken care of one way or another. This strong caregiving pull is there whether we happen to have given birth or not. It’s the mother energy and life force, and it’s a beautiful thing. But as with all things, balance and integration are key.

We can get a bit out of whack. Or, said another way, the frequency of our energy dips below the line into the shadow zone. Science and spirituality agree on this one—when we get all lackluster and dull, we literally vibrate at a lower frequency.

That can show up as feeling dried up and joyless, vaguely disappointed by life, overwhelmed and underappreciated or bogged down in a confusing swirl of ideas with no clear direction. Because we’re pretty good at functioning at a high level on top of all that, however, we can plunk along in life for quite a while before we say, “Enough is enough. I want to live a big, juicy, custombuilt-for-me life.”

Where do you go for help with that “Vague Sense of Something Missing”? It’s not even tangible enough to complain about without feeling like a whiny, ungrateful twit. But no, you are absolutely not a whiny, ungrateful twit. Banish that thought from your head this minute, my friend. You are someone with a fierce, fun-loving, beautiful spirit in you that wants to come out

and play. And part of you knows, deep down, that it’s been a bit neglected for a while. Maybe a long while.

Never mind, we are evolving beings, and let’s consider this the perfect time for you to give voice to aspects of you and your heart that have not been heard for a while. Here are three ways to tune into those deep desires.

Focus on feeling good. Feeling good is an excellent access to the higher energy bandwidths, which means it’s a great way to get in that light and happy zone where your inner being feels welcome to express itself. The better you feel, and the more you get conscious control and awareness of what you are vibrationally broadcasting, the more connected you become with your Self, your Soul, with others, with life force.

Let your heart and Soul know you’re listening now.

Get curious about what’s at your core, your essence, and start posing questions (to your Self) along the lines of, “What would feel really good to you?” or, “In what way do you want to grow?” or, “What would absolutely delight you?” Then be still and see what answers come. (Note: Your Soul often speaks in the form of a fresh new thought!)

Start a running list of desires. We’re so used to having lists of things to do (or feel bad about not having done), it can seem daunting to make a list of things you want in your life. But this is most definitely not a to-do list. This is more of a “to be” list, a menu of beautiful ideas and options you can choose from whenever you like.

You might feel slightly stuck at first when you do this. When you haven’t had any attention on your longings and yearnings, you must give them time to bubble up to the surface.

Here are some desires others have expressed that you can use to jumpstart your own list: an environment that nourishes, calms and inspires me; work that uses my talents and is fulfilling; being loved, cherished and adored; the courage to make a big change; clarity about my purpose and path; adventures and travel; dancing.

Make it a practice to have this be more of an ongoing journaling exercise than a once-and-done affair. The more you tune into and honor your heart’s desires and your Soul, the less you need to keep looking outside for answers.

Listen for those yearnings, take actions in alignment with who you are at your essence—and you’ve got yourself a luscious life.

A New Chapter— Nexus for Consciousness, Healing and Hope

In 1994, the same year Jeff Bezos founded Amazon and Deepak Chopra laid the first bricks on his path to enlightenment, Sharon Bruckman created Natural Awakenings magazine. Each a visionary. Each ahead of their time.

By the late 1990s Americans had developed a voracious appetite for well-researched, practical information about the latest natural approaches to nutrition, fitness, personal growth and sustainable living. The Natural Awakenings franchise was born, expanding into the largest franchise publishing network in the health and wellness industry.

As the magazine’s 25th anniversary issue, published in 2019, explained, Natural Awakenings was woven from the threads of grit, inspiration and serendipity, creating a tapestry of health, healing and mindfulness. In an interview appearing in that issue, Bruckman clarified her purpose, saying, “The why that has been keeping me ‘on purpose’ can be found in the same mission statement that inspired me to create Natural Awakenings: to inspire and empower people to awaken to their highest poten-

tial, so together we can create a world that works for all living things.”

The world’s delicate ecosystem, now in crisis, was also in need of help. “The critical issues we now address in Natural Awakenings—like genetically modified foods and climate change—were just emerging in serious public discourse then, but have since grown in urgency,” Bruckman said. “The good news is that in the past 25 years, viable solutions in renewable technologies, organic farming methods and holistic healthcare practices have made great strides; now they just have to be implemented on grander scale.”

Shortly after the 25th anniversary issue was published, Joe Dunne, Natural Awakenings’ COO, had a serendipitous meeting with Kimberly Whittle, founder and CEO of KnoWEwell. One conversation later, he was certain that Whittle

22 Tucson Edition NaturalTucson.coms

and Bruckman should meet, given their shared vision and mission. Dunne describes KnoWEwell’s online Regenerative Whole Health Hub as “WebMD, NEJM [New England Journal of Medicine], Match.com, Home Advisor, LinkedIn, Facebook, Amazon, Quora, Medium and Apple News all rolled into one for health.” A week later, Whittle was on a plane to Florida to visit Bruckman at her home. It was the start of a providential relationship between two visionaries determined to bring natural healing, health and hope to individuals and families.

A decade earlier, in 2009, Whittle was driven by a series of family health crises to embark on a search for solutions. Deep diving into evidence-based research, she traveled the country to multiple integrative and functional medicine practitioner conferences. “I was blessed to find tremendous success in the prevention and healing of chronic conditions through what today is defined as Regenerative Whole Health, a broad spectrum of global healing approaches and therapies that consider the whole person—mind, body and spirit—connecting the dots between soil, food, lifestyle choices, planet and personal health to help prevent and address the root causes of chronic diseases,” she explains. “I began as a mom on a mission. As I grew into my family’s healer, and then a health and well-being resource for my friends, I felt a deep yearning to go beyond my community and help more people.”

Combining her entrepreneurial spirit, professional experiences, passion and purpose, Whittle formed KnoWEwell as a force for good in the world, to pay it forward and make it easier for others facing their own health crises, and to pay it back to the professional organizations and providers that helped her family heal. Much like Natural Awakenings, KnoWEwell’s mission is to transform health care by inspiring and empowering individuals with the knowledge, resources and community to proactively prevent harm, address chronic diseases and create “WELLthier Living” for themselves, their families, humanity and the planet.

Last December, KnoWEwell acquired Natural Awakenings, creating an integrated ecosystem that is committed to community, spanning the information gaps, providing immersive multimedia educational experiences and fostering trusted connections locally and globally. Together, these two companies are set to be the solution for consciousness, healing and hope.

A World in Crisis Needs Our Collective Help

Individually and collectively, we are facing unprecedented challenges. Human and planetary health are in crisis, and they are inextricably linked. According to the World Health Organization, climate change is the biggest global health threat confronting humanity.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimates that 33 percent of the Earth’s soils are already degraded, and more than 90 percent could become degraded by 2050. Soil erosion decreases agriculture productivity and contributes to a host of environmental threats. It can take up to 1,000 years to produce just two to three centimeters of soil.

While gene-edited crops are being promoted by the world’s largest chemical companies as “giving mother nature a boost,” Jeffrey Smith, founder of the Institute for Responsible Technology, warns, “With gene editing techniques, such as CRISPR, nature could be permanently corrupted by countless GMOs, and our food supply—including organic—could be overrun.”

Meanwhile, six in 10 adults and more than half of all children have a chronic health condition. The problem, Whittle believes, is that while our conventional medical system excels at acute care for an injury or a heart attack, it was never designed to treat chronic conditions, focusing more on the symptoms than the root cause of disease. Studies show there is a roughly 17-year lag between new research and mainstream health and medicine practices.

Hope for People and Planet

Evidence-based research is proving that while our DNA may be our ancestry, it is not necessarily our destiny.

According to Dr. Jeffrey Bland, the father of functional medicine, “Our gene expression is altered by numerous influences including environment, lifestyle, diet, activity patterns, psycho-social-spiritual factors and stress. These lifestyle choices and environmental exposures can push us toward (or away from) disease by turning on—or off—certain genes.” Ninety percent of the risks of chronic disease are due to non-genetic factors,  and with the right knowledge and resources, individuals can change their lifestyle and environment to prevent and reverse chronic health conditions.

Rodale Institute, a leader in organic farming education and research, points to the importance of farming methods in addressing the health and planet crises. According to the organization,

“Hope is right below our feet. Healthier soil grows healthier plants, and healthier plants are more nutritious plants. In our work at Rodale Institute, we’re investigating the links between soil health and human health and proving that organic [farming] can feed the world.”

Research by Rodale Institute has confirmed that adoption of regenerative organic farming practices could capture more than 100 percent of current, humancaused emissions of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Rodale Institute researchers concluded, “We now know enough to have real hope, and with this hope comes the responsibility to journey down a new path.”

Millennials are leading the way on conscious living, flocking to integrative options and opting for more “natural” care, long advocated by Natural Awakenings. They now constitute the largest sector of the U.S. workforce with annual spending power of $600 billion. Close to 60 percent of millennials research information about health and nutrition online and on social media. This health-conscious generation believes good health is both a personal and social responsibility. They are early adopters of wearable technology and prefer organically grown, locally sourced and ethically raised foods. But consumers of all ages are overwhelmed by information and unverified online sources in the fragmented whole health market.

Looking Forward

The World Economic Forum reported in 2021 that health care is undergoing a digital revolution that requires multi-stakeholder collaboration and the bridging of information gaps by fusing the digital and analog worlds. The 2017 industry white paper “The Rise of Wellcare”, by PricewaterhouseCoopers, concluded that integrated ecosystems for the consumer in the healthcare industry are essential. This paradigm

Virinaflora/shutterstock.com

would include products, services, social media, community and environmental activism.

The good news is that the local Natural Awakenings print magazines, together with KnoWEwell's Regenerative Whole Health Hub, a global digital ecosystem, are forging the paradigm shift. Whittle is honored to be continuing Bruckman’s legacy. “We are kindred spirits; I have the same purpose and unwavering drive that Sharon had founding Natural Awakenings nearly 30 years ago. I am deeply committed to multi-stakeholder collaboration that benefits all—our families, communities and the planet. We will educate to bring consciousness of connections into daily practices and respect for Mother Earth so all can thrive and prosper. Together, we will inspire, empower and achieve a WELLthier Living World.”

One-on-One with Artist Robin Chlad

experiencing a resurgence since the pandemic, and Chlad’s classes fill up quickly, so consider the opportunity to make your own masterpiece.

Q & A WITH ROBIN CHLAD

Tell us a little about growing up and your attraction to art as a vocation.

I was born in New York State, raised in Hamilton, New York. Mostly farm country, but it was also a college town (Colgate). I was always attracted to art. I loved coloring in coloring books, drawing and doodling. I loved art class. But with six kids and an alcoholic father, my family struggled. I barely got any encouragement at home, so school was my resource. My art teacher was very supportive of my ideas and helped me cultivate my creative appetite.

When did you first start working with ceramics?

In 1983, I had a job in Germany at the Army base in a ceramic hobby shop. I learned how to make molds, paint and glaze, fire a kiln and also teach others how to as well. My boss had a potter’s wheel. I tried to make a bowl a couple times but failed miserably. I promised myself when I got back to the States I would take classes and learn how to do it. I did just that.

What inspired you to work with clay?

Robin Chlad is an artist who owns her own namesake business in Tucson, Robin Chlad Designs. Chlad makes inspirational pieces that will beautify your home, patio and garden. Her pottery style is bright and cheerful, not your typical clay pottery. She also creates ceramic wall tiles to spice up your walls.

If you’d prefer to exercise your own creativity, she offers workshops for beginners, in which participants can make their own mosaic wall hanging or a mosaic table. Mosaic art is

I was always amazed at how one could make an object out of mud. When I was little, I loved little knick-knacks that were so popular in the ‘50s. I loved how you can make clay look like anything you desire in ceramic and how you could transform a rough dry piece of clay or sculpture into a shiny new piece of art. I was not your typical ‘70s or ‘80s potter with subdued color glazes, but was entirely attracted to colors with high glassy surfaces. I like colors that pop.

Being in Tucson with the Mexican art culture, it was a natural thing to pursue. Inspirations from the desert, sunsets, tiny flowers and precious hummingbirds, the character of a coyote all play into my art. But what also inspires me is the teachings of Jesus and his amazing creations. I do many inspirational pieces of angels and altars within a garden setting that come from my spirit—it all comes from the spirit above, really.

Are you self-taught or have you studied with someone else?

I took classes at Pima College for pottery, but I wanted to do more than make pots. My creative spirit wanted to manipulate pottery with hand-building and sculpting. I would say most of my craft is self-taught.

Who are your biggest influences and/or mentors?

Peter King, an architectural ceramic artist, the late Tom Kerrigan, world renowned sculpture artist. I have taken painting classes at the Drawing Studio in the past.

What is the process of making your ceramic art?

I make many types of objects, so the processes vary. Simple tile making is rolling out a slab of clay, drawing and cutting shapes, drying. glazing and firing. A vase is made from a slab of clay but rolled into a cylinder and designed. A shadow box (small sculpture) has many steps of the process and it all has to be timely. It begins with a square, rectangle or arched structure and many small sculpted free forms are built into the box.

What motivates you to create art?

Sales, honestly. When I sell something, it is a confirmation I am doing the right thing. When I get a custom order, it motivates me to create art that is my own.

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

The classes are a huge hit. Most people want to learn and make something beautiful. I have made it easy for them to make and complete a mosaic table or wall piece in three hours. It’s a lot of preparation but the smiles and joy on my students’ faces says it all. They always leave amazed at their ability to create something they are proud of and beautiful. And I’m always so proud of the different designs everyone creates. It’s extremely rewarding.

Using light energy through distance healing, your healing process can move forward more smoothly.

“My knee was warm for about 3 full hours after I left. It seemed to heal further after I slept the first couple of nights. While my knee was not healed 100%, it was significantly better and I was able to go on my Montana ski trip the next week.

P.S. Another month after my ski trip my knee has continued to improve.”

Practicing by donation for nearly 10 years. Questions? Call Bill at 770-990-9191 or visit https://www.distancehealer.me

What is your dream project? A public art piece.

Do you make custom art pieces for homes?

Yes, most of my custom work is for homes.

What do you like most about being an artist?

I like the freedom of making my heart’s desire. I’ve always been a free spirit and I need the freedom to create. I truly believe God made me to be an artist. He put this gift in me and blessed me with a way to provide for myself. I love my life and am so grateful for being able to nurture and share my talents.

Where can people purchase your art?

Folks can purchase direct through my website or my Etsy site or through the galleries who represent my work, Wilde Meyer Gallery in Tucson and Scottsdale, and KNewby Gallery in Tubac.

Do you listen to music while you’re creating?

If yes, which genre of music?

Yes! I listen to a variety of music—old country, Alan Jackson, old rock, Van Morrison, Crooners, Bossa Nova, Contemporary Christian.

Can you share the details of your wall and table mosaic classes?

Offered once a month, you get to choose from so many beautiful handmade tiles designed and made by me. I have an assistant that helps keep my inventory up. The workshop is three hours, design, glue and grout. The students leave with their piece completed.

Do you offer clay classes?

During the summer, I offer building 3D tile or shadow box classes. The classes are a four-part series. It includes small sculpture and glaze application.

What types of shadow boxes do you make?

Donkey shadow box, quails, mostly desert critter scenes.

Describe yourself in three words. Imaginative, determined, faithful.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Always speak life, proclaim your future and do not wait on circumstances to be perfect, but keep persevering.

Do you have any favorite restaurants in Tucson?

Vivace, Truland Burgers and Greens, First Watch.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

I’m just so grateful for all those that have supported my visions and work throughout the years. I love what I do and can’t wait to share more of what I do.
