Exploring the Potential of Medical Thermal Imaging for Detecting Oral Root Canal and Dental Infections by Lisa Holliday

C

ould thermal imaging technology revolutionize the screening process for individuals concerned about infected root canals, cavitations or chronic dental infections? This article delves into the intriguing possibility of utilizing thermal imaging as a screening tool and its potential applications in dentistry. A recurring source of frustration has been the absence of a reliable tool to help individuals identify problematic root canals. While the

While X-rays are effective at detecting structural abnormalities like fractures or dental issues, thermography is better suited to identify areas of increased heat/cold and inflammation within the entire body. Thermography has the ability to see abnormal blood flow from infected root canals that can travel to various organs of the body and create more disease, if not properly detected. Thermography became medically approved and FDA-registered in 1982 without the use of radiation or compression. Thermography in medicine has diverse applications, offering a safe and non-invasive means of assessing temperature patterns and abnormal blood flow within the whole body, associated with physiological and pathological conditions. Early preventative detection of potential areas of concern seen within the thermogram can provide the client an opportunity to look at lifestyle and necessary dietary changes with their doctor or practitioner before it turns into a disease. In collaboration with thermographer Lisa Holliday, known for her work in preventative screening for inflammation and abnormal blood flow within the body, which is the precursor for disease and breast issues, Inflammation Imaging of Tucson explored the potential of thermal imaging to identify areas of chronic heat in the face. This breakthrough offered a promising solution for individuals who faced the challenge of determining the problematic root canals among multiple treatments.

Your facilitators, Kim Green, Author and writing coach Marcia Williams, LPC

Thermal imaging emerges as a functional screening tool for dentistry, potentially aiding in the identification of root canals with chronic inflammation, cavitations and early-stage abscesses. In comparison to traditional X-rays, thermal imaging can detect subtle signs of chronic heat and inflammation in the mouth before they escalate into full-blown abscesses.

Inspiration struck when considering the application of existing thermal imaging technology in a new context. Thermography— a technology initially developed by the military and adopted by NASA—could serve as a valuable tool for identifying chronic heat or inflammation in the mouth, with a baseline image of the face before and after the root canal procedure to determine if the infection had been abated.

ucson artist Ralph Prata will be exhibiting his unique sculptural concrete carvings and recycled assemblage pieces at the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun Little Gallery, in Tucson, from December 31 until January 12. An opening reception will be held December 31 from noon to 3pm. Making Oral Care Part of Your Self-Care Routine

Relax and Refresh

A professional dental cleaning is like a spa day for your teeth. Try something new, like an electric toothbrush, new mouthwash or a special toothpaste with benefits like whitening like CloSYS, which naturally whitens teeth and helps to balance pH in the mouth, reducing the risk of caries. Or try sensitivity battling ingredients like Tom’s Sensitive toothpaste, which does not have fluoride.

Promote Happiness and Confidence By Kaspars Grinvalds on AdobeStock

Your smile is important for many reasons. Smiling has been shown to boost your mood and confidence. Smiling can make somebody else’s day as well. It’s also the first thing people notice when you meet them for the first time.

Dental Self-Care Practices

Form good daily habits. Dentists recommend brushing and using a water flosser. Water flossers help remove microbial biofilm from between your teeth and below the gumlines, and they’re also gentle and easy to use.

S

elf-care is important because our physical and mental health is important. Dental care isn’t often thought of as self-care, but it’s an important part of caring for our health and well-being.

Maintain Health and Well-Being

A clean, healthy and strong smile is crucial to your overall health and well-being. One of the most important ways in which dental care is self-care is that it can help to keep your whole body healthy and strong as shown by research time and time again. Poor dental health has been shown to impact cardiovascular health, blood pressure, risk of stroke and other serious conditions.

Stay hydrated. Did you know that when you drink water, you’re also taking care of your teeth? A hydrated mouth is a healthy mouth. Drinking water washes away food debris and harmful bacteria, fights dry mouth and helps prevent acid attacks. Schedule regular check-ups. Regular check-ups help detect problems before they start, and professional cleanings get rid of plaque in all the places that regular brushing and flossing may not be as effective. E Dental Solutions specializes in providing a stress-free dental visit. They offer many non-invasive treatments, including Biolase Laser for gum health and air-abrasion for superficial cavities. They also give you tools to help maintain proper home care. Connect at 520-745-5496 or EDentalSolutions.net. See ad, back cover.

Breathing into a New You Unlock Your Potential with Breathwork

By Pixel-Shot on AdobeStock

by Jonathan Schecter

W

Regulating the Nervous System: Our modern lifestyles often leave our nervous systems in overdrive. Breathwork is the antidote. It teaches your body to switch from stress to relaxation, balancing your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The result? A calmer, more composed you—among a slew of other benefits like being calmer, handling stress better, sleeping well and experiencing less anxiety and depression.

Understanding Breathwork

Inner Wisdom and Self-Development: Breathwork isn’t just about breathing; it is a journey toward self-awareness and wholeness. It’s about facing your inner challenges and releasing what doesn’t serve you to emerge stronger. This journey can be deeply personal

Mental Clarity: Imagine clearing the fog in your mind, just with your breath. Breathwork does that. It oxygenates your brain, sharpens your focus and sweeps away mental clutter. It’s like giving your brain a refreshing new start—something we all need in our busy lives.

Integrating Breathwork into Daily Life

How do you start? That’s where personal guidance comes in. Integrating breathwork into your life does not have to be complex. It can be tailored to fit your unique lifestyle and goals. The best part is that you can start seeing changes from even a small commitment of 10 minutes per day. Now, imagine having a guide that can help you start experiencing benefits as quickly as possible. Someone to tailor breathwork practices to your needs, to support you through challenges, and to celebrate your breakthroughs. A breathwork coach can offer that guidance.

elcome to a transformative journey in 2024. As we embrace a new year filled with possibilities, let’s explore an ancient practice with modern relevance: breathwork. This is not just about understanding breathwork. It is an invitation to experience a personal revolution that can literally change your life—not a goal that you’re going to forget about in six weeks.

Breathwork, the art of intentional and conscious breathing, is not new. It is rooted in ancient practices like yoga, but today, it’s gaining traction as a powerful tool for wellness and self-improvement. Breathwork isn’t just a practice; it is a pathway to unlocking your hidden potential. While I’d challenge you to find something in life that breathwork doesn’t improve, here are three things that breathwork coaching practice can help with.

and transformative, leading to profound insights and lasting change.

Breathwork is more than a practice. It is a key to unlocking your potential. As you step into 2024, remember that every breath you take can be a step toward a clearer, calmer and more self-aware you. Make this year a transformative one—one breath at a time. Jonathan Schecter is a Certified Breathwork Facilitator and Integration Coach at Blue Magic Alchemy. To explore how breathwork can transform your mental clarity, regulate your nervous system and catalyze your personal growth, contact Schecter for a free coaching session. Inspiration

Older and Bolder by Deb Beroset But, why are those things a problem? Maybe it’s because we think they’re a problem. Let’s set that aside for a moment, however, and think about caterpillars. Caterpillars start out all long and sleek, with legs for days. They’re young and firm. All those sexy stripes and dots. They can eat all day and not feel bloated or fat; they just keep on doing the same thing the next day. Ah, to be a caterpillar, right?

W

Deb Beroset

e speak of aging like it is a problem to be solved. The truth is, aging is a pretty good sign that you are winning. You are still here. We are here. And who knows? You might even be here for another day tomorrow. What are some of the things that come up for you about getting older? About aging? What are some of the thoughts that run through your mind on a regular basis? When asking women about this, there is quite a range of responses. Some women bemoan the signs of a body that’s been on the planet for a while: wrinkles, some saggy bits, curves and softness where there didn’t used to be curves and softness. Others speak of uncertainty and change ahead. Feeling like there’s less time. 14

Tucson Edition

At some point, of course, if it isn’t eaten by a bird, that caterpillar will begin the most dramatic change in the life cycle of a butterfly—the change referred to as metamorphosis. Inside the pupa or chrysalis, the caterpillar actually turns to liquid as it transforms into a butterfly, the adult stage. During metamorphosis, the body tissues of the caterpillar are completely reorganized to produce the adult butterfly that emerges. Any single individual of any species is going to have the same DNA throughout its entire lifespan. What changes in butterflies, particularly between a caterpillar and an adult butterfly, is they go through metamorphosis. A couple of days before the butterfly emerges, the chrysalis changes color, and the butterfly’s patterns and color can be seen through the chrysalis. The butterfly breaks out of the protective chrysalis and pumps blood into its newly formed wings. Then, it flies away. So, which do you find more beautiful? The caterpillar or the butterfly?

NaturalTucson.com

The answer to that is likely to be partly the result of cultural conditioning. We celebrate the beauty of the butterfly—all kinds of butterflies, in all kinds of shapes, sizes, colors and patterns. What if in the life cycle of a woman, we are either entering or are in our butterfly stage? We are so conditioned to think of butterflies as the beautiful culmination of a transformation. What if we were to see our own aging as a similar culmination of a transformation? What if we thought about aging as a shifting into a metamorphosis—in which we go in one way, and come out transformed and taking up new space and stretching our newly formed wings and taking flight? Ah, but I sense you have a question. How long does a caterpillar live before it turns into a butterfly? Wait until you hear this. Many species will spend less than a week undergoing metamorphosis, but most will emerge as a butterfly within about three weeks. Some butterflies, however, may wait as long as three years to leave the chrysalis, but this has less to do with the rigors of the metamorphosis and more to do with the environment around them. We can tend to the environment our own metamorphosis needs to have us emerge as our own form of butterflies. The most important environment to tend to is in our thoughts and the way we speak to ourselves. There are many aspects to this, but you can’t go wrong focusing on moving from a paradigm of self-rejection to self-reflection. When you think about it, much of what we have a problem with when it comes to getting older is about aesthetics. Consider, however, that how old we feel and seem is much more about a way of being. “Arguably, however, emulating the aesthetics of youth is to misunderstand and misinterpret the essence of youthfulness, which is so much more than a physical statement. It means being able to take new chances and try new things. It equals

optimism, positivity and vitality— traits that have nothing to do with appearance,” explained Kiran Sidhu. The most youthful people—the ones whose energy attracts—are engaged with life and are governed by curiosity. To what extent have you internalized the negative aging stereotypes you’ve been fed all your life? Do you lie about your age or feel self-conscious when Deb Beroset you “date yourself” in some way? Do you assume your age is going to be a problem when it comes to love and intimacy? Do you assume younger people will find you boring or irrelevant? Do you accept that it’s too late to do lots of things?

THE ESSENSE OF YOUR BEAUTY BODY CONTOUR INTUITIVE SKINCARE HAIR EXTENTIONS DETOX YOGA

What if what you’ve assumed is true about getting older is not necessarily so? Ageism manifests in so many ways, we want to be very vigilant and aware of what we allow in our own personal ecosystem. The ageist beliefs zap our energy. Do you want to live the life you’ve been told to expect, or do you want to be the storyteller? It’s in our later seasons that we have the deep roots and the strength to take new kinds of chances in life— the kinds of chances that stretch your spirit the way it wants to be stretched. This period of life could be all about ascension, dancing at the edge of what you think you know and giving yourself permission to speak and sing and soar. Take chances. Remember how willing you were in your teens and twenties to be open to things, to take risks. Consider that the older we get, the better prepared we are for risks. We’ve been around, we’ve had experiences and we know things. We’ve experienced failures and setbacks and lived to not only tell the tale, but write a whole new story.

Achieving Health and Wellness in 2024

I

t is only natural to start off every New Year with resolutions as to what we might want to change, pay more attention to or focus energy toward. In this first issue of 2024, Natural Awakenings has chosen to focus on the theme of Health and Wellness. To many, they might seem to be the same subject, but the reality of these often-linked headings is that they are quite different. The focus of “good health” is to be aware of and in tune with your body’s needs. After all, you live in your body, and if anyone knows the needs of your body, it should be you. Pay attention to the signals, signs and symptoms that your body is making you aware of. Do not ignore the aches, pains and stresses. Be diligent and honest with 16

yourself and take action before the symptoms become persistent. Be kind and compassionate to your body. The three keys areas that you must monitor are your diet, physical activity and the medicines you choose. Many books will list routines, foods and exercise regimens, but before you decide on any one, know what your body can tolerate, react to and benefit from. Pay attention to your family history or concerns that you might have. Whether choosing assistance from Western medicine, Eastern medicine or a Holistic approach, consult with professionals in those specialties to understand all implications which any of these approaches can cause, create or influence.

The focus of wellness is to achieve your maximum potential to live your best life. It is a philosophy which combines an active lifestyle coupled with the goal toward prevention of future problems. This path of wellness combines physical exercise; mental patterns in thinking, believing and feelings; a spiritual awareness of one’s self and one’s surroundings; a nutritional routine which provides the ingredients to maintain optimal health; instill sleep patterns to grow, heal and restore the energy needed for life’s functions; an environmental atmosphere which does not impede or adversely affect your everyday balance; and life skills which empower and creative revised thinking as you approach and deal with the positive and negative aspects of your everyday life. Changes are possible, but often fear keeps people from pursuing other options. Remember the life you have is the only one you will have, and the best way to achieve a balance of health and wellness is to be aware that this life is fragile, finite and yours. Be good to your body and yourself and they will be good to, and for, you. To be real asks that we face our fear, for fear diminishes awareness of our light so that our light is not seen. In hiding our light, we disconnect from our full presence, when all the while it is us and no one else who is limiting our brilliance— thus, reinforcing feelings of unsafety, perpetuating the fear. With practice, in time, we learn to trust and allow our light to be seen and shine, realizing that there is no one to fear but our own conditioned less conscious self.

Graceful Aging

Living Longer, Healthier and More Fulfilled by Carrie Jackson

P

eople are living longer, and as we age, we increasingly become aware of a desire to remain healthy, vibrant and active for as long as possible. It’s about extending our health span as much as our lifespan. While genetics play a role in how we experience the aging process, advancements in science are helping us understand that how we manage our mindset, physical activity, stress levels and diet can have just as much of an impact. By redefining what it means to get older and finding deeper meaning, we can embrace aging with grace and gratitude, rather than resist it. Many factors are within our control, and it is possible to live a fulfilling and vibrant life well into our twilight years. At nearly 103 years young, Dr. Gladys McGarey wrote the book on graceful aging. As the author of The Well-Lived Life: A 102-Year-Old Doctor's Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age, she suggests that we reframe aging as an opportunity rather than a loss, thereby pioneering a

new way of thinking about disease and health. “At 102, I’m losing my eyesight, but my insight has improved,” says the cofounder of the American Holistic Medical Association. “I have trouble reading but can listen to audiobooks and have deep conversations with people. If we look for illness and pain at the end of life, that’s what our bodies will show us. But if we reach for health, joy, laughter and other realities of true humanity, that’s what we will find.” McGarey asserts that our medical community is trained to eliminate pain and illness rather than learn from their messages. “If we can lean into what understanding a disease shows us, we can discover true wisdom,” she explains. “You can hold onto the pain, or you can hold onto what you learn from the pain. When my son was training to be an orthopedic surgeon, he confided that he was afraid to have people’s lives in his hands. I responded that if he thinks he’s the one who does the healing, he has a right to be scared. Doctors provide the

technology to turn the healing over to the patient, and we have the core knowledge of what to do inside of us.” McGarey is a firm believer that forgiveness is essential to freeing up stuck energy. Life has to move, she says, and letting go of feelings that may be lingering in our subconscious allows us to move forward with grace. “If we hang on to the dark places in our lives, we will get stuck. Pay attention to your dreams, both during the day and night, because they hold the truth. We all came here for a reason and have our life’s purpose. If you find that, you will always be fulfilled and can embrace the aging process instead of fighting it,” she says. Renowned alternative medicine advocate Deepak Chopra, M.D., is an author, speaker and founder of the Chopra Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to research on wellbeing and humanitarianism. His latest book, Quantum Body: The New Science for Living a Longer, Healthier, More Vital Life, outlines how we can harness the power of the quantum body to significantly improve our physical and mental wellness, leading to a more fulfilling aging process. According to Chopra, our well-being depends entirely on the quantum field, which exists on a subatomic level and is the infinite source of everyday reality that affects our thoughts, feelings, sensations and biological responses. “Your quantum body is the central hub for every process that requires intelligence, just as a power plant is the central hub for everything that requires electricity. The prospect of having your quantum body fail you is far more serious than any single symptom of disease and aging. Well-being is weakened whenever there is a failure of intelligence and is strengthened when intelligence flows naturally,” he explains. Disease and aging are further downstream in the intelligence flow, Chopra notes, and when someone succumbs to a heart attack or cancer, intelligence has failed in either the

One vital aspect of healthy aging that we can control is our approach to stress management, which Chopra says most people don’t take seriously enough. Stress can come from myriad sources, including family and social relationships; workplace stresses; a poor-quality diet; deficient sleeping habits; lack of exercise and downtime; and constant distractions from texting, video games and around-the-clock news reports. That is why it is more important than ever to develop tools for self-care. “The frenetic pace of modern life has overwhelmed the autonomic nervous system, which is responsible for all the processes, from heartbeat to respiration and digestion, that run independently of your conscious actions,” Chopra advises. “Medical research validates how essential stress management is, but what needs to change are socially ingrained attitudes that persuade us to tolerate stress beyond what our bodies and psyches are designed for.” Chopra encourages prioritizing deep sleep, tuning into breath and awareness, and mindful exercises to return to our zero point—a state of rest from which activity springs. “Your awareness experiences the zero point as silent, calm, alert and pregnant with boundless possibilities, where you have access to your next thought,” he explains. Embracing instead of resisting our quantum body further helps the energy flow. “The most natural way to live is in your dharma, or your truth,” Chopra says. “The greatest gift of self-awareness is that you can prove this to yourself every day by living with love, truth, beauty and bliss as

your goal. Ultimate well-being requires no less, and living from your source reveals that the infinite is personal and within reach. Physical well-being exists if you are able to live a long life in good health; mental well-being exists if you retain clear, sharp thinking; psychological well-being exists if you are free of anxiety and depression; and spiritual well-being exists if your life has higher purpose and meaning.” With more than 40 years of experience as a functional medicine doctor, Tom O’Bryan, DC, DACBN, CIFM, is an internationally recognized speaker and writer on chronic disease and metabolic disorders. He defines graceful aging as a state of full body function, without limitations and with rational expectations for what the body can do. O’Bryan points to the so-called Blue Zones, with an extraordinarily high percentage of people living into their 90s and above, as examples of those gracefully aging. “The lifestyle of people living in these areas includes daily rituals that reduce stress and reverse the inflammation associated with stress. As a result, they are able to live long, fruitful, happy lives as contributing and engaged members of society,” he notes. O’Bryan believes that the greatest contribution to living a vital life is identifying and reducing the triggers of inflammation in our bodies, which can largely be accomplished with lifestyle modifications. “According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 14 of the top 15 causes of death are related to chronic inflammatory diseases. Many people address inflammation with medication, but they don’t realize that food is the best medicine,” he explains. “With diet being the largest source of inflammation activation in the body, it’s important to question what’s on the end of our fork and nourish the body with an anti-inflammatory diet, including berries, leafy greens, garlic, curcumin and plenty of pure water. Your body always wants to be healthier, and if we identify and reduce our exposure to the triggers of inflammation, the inflammation calms down.”

Reducing inflammation also allows the central nervous system to settle into restand-digest mode, which can help the body age more gracefully. “Inflammation is the immune system’s response to harmful stimuli,” O’Bryan says. “An activated immune system is a life-saving, non-negotiable state that sets our sympathetic nervous system into fight-or-flight mode. When we are stressed or fighting for our lives, our heart rate is fast; our breathing is short, sharp and shallow; and our muscles are tight and ready for action. When inflammation decreases, our bodies are able to calm down and activate the parasympathetic nervous system. In that very relaxed state, your heart rate is slow; your breath is deep; your muscles are relaxed; and your brain is open, expansive and daydreaming of new possibilities in life. That’s when healing and regeneration occurs.” Carrie Jackson is a Chicago-based freelance writer. Connect at CarrieJacksonWrites.com.

cardiovascular system or a single malignant cell. “Instead of being anxious about cells, tissues, organs and systems, which aren’t under your control, you can live from the source where all controls are overseen by your quantum body. Here, all information is perfect, the flow of intelligence is never wrong or distorted, and the creative possibilities for the future are boundless,” Chopra contends.

There’s this growing notion that the canyon is for sale,” opines McBride. At 52 years old, McBride has the energy of a rockstar. He has spent two decades studying the world with a camera. A master photographer, filmmaker and public speaker, he has traveled on assignment to over 75 countries for National Geographic, Smithsonian, Google and the Nature Conservancy, and spoken on stages for TEDx, The World Economic Forum, USAID and more. McBride is a skilled storyteller. He will bring the grandeur of the Grand Canyon to life during his presentation with words and pictures. A graduate of Dartmouth and a Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford, McBride resides in Colorado.

What made you choose photography as your vocation?

I went to work at a newspaper after college as a writer. I photographed one story I was working on, and the editors loved the photography as much, if not more than, the words. I like the power of photography.

Your lecture at the Fox Theatre is part of the Changemaker speaker series. What are the qualities of a changemaker?

Changemakers are predominately people who work for National Geographic who are storytellers. I’m a visual storyteller. I focus on the untold stories, usually about the environment, the natural ecosystems that keep us all alive and a lot about water,

which most of us take for granted. We bring in-depth stories to people about places and wildlife that most people haven’t had a chance to see or experience.

of humility that the place teaches us—how small it makes us feel, in a good way.

Why should someone come to your presentation about the Grand Canyon?

Even though it’s a national park, it’s not protected as much as we think it is. There are a lot of people who want to turn its beauty into cash. There’s only one Grand Canyon on this planet. It requires each generation to realize how amazing it is, not just for us but for wildlife, biodiversity and water systems. The Colorado River is the source of water for 40 million people and it’s our job to protect it. Biodiversity is like the immune system for the planet and us. The Grand Canyon is a natural wonder of the planet.

They should come because they will get to see how stunningly beautiful, remarkably complicated and how extremely fragile the Grand Canyon is. The striking imagery and fun storytelling that’s full of valuable information about this iconic natural landmark, but also humorful storytelling—I use a lot of self-deprecating humor. People will also learn about the importance of native voices in and around the Grand Canyon. There are 11 Native American tribes that call the Grand Canyon home. People don’t realize how important their voices are to the national park system.

Will there be any other photos besides the ones of the Grand Canyon?

In addition to the behind-the-scenes photographs of the Grand Canyon, there will be a collection of exciting images from Mount Everest to Antarctica.

What was the most memorable aspect of hiking the Grand Canyon?

The most memorable aspect was obviously the beauty. Also, the power of the night sky, the power of the silence one can experience down there, the power of the native voices and history, and lastly the deep level

Individualized Alzheimer’s Treatments A New Frontier in Disease Reversal by Dana Thacker, BSN, RN

Cognitive testing after the nine-month treatments showed that 84 percent of the participants not only maintained neurological function, but also improved cognition. A follow-up MRI also showed an increase in gray matter volume. The researchers noted in their report that a larger, controlled trial is warranted. “Dementia is not a death sentence,” states Kat Toups, a functional medicine psychiatrist and co-contributor to the precision treatment research. In her own practice, she embraces a patient-centric, multimodal approach to treating Alzheimer’s that focuses on three components—infection, inflammation and immunity. By reducing inflammation and treating infections, she asserts, the body is ready to receive immune-building therapies.

ANSWERING THE SKEPTICS

A

ccording to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 6 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, and the numbers are expected to rise to nearly 13 million by 2050. In addition to the loss of cherished memories, more than 11 million unpaid caregivers provide an estimated 18 billion hours of care for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients annually. Given the costs and burdens of the disease, many people wonder whether Alzheimer’s is reversible. Recent discoveries indicate that may be possible.

MECHANISMS OF ALZHEIMER’S

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describe Alzheimer’s disease as a neurodegenerative condition that results in cognitive decline, memory loss and deficits in language and behavior. It is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States and the most common reason for dementia in older adults. During the early stages of the disease, neurons within the brain become damaged without apparent symptoms. This destruction can occur for a decade without recognition, resulting in delayed diagnosis and treatment. Protein buildup forces healthy neurons to stop functioning and sever connections, which likely provokes brain cell death and shrinkage.

BREAKTHROUGH IN TREATMENT

Research published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease offers new hope for patients. Twenty-five participants with preAlzheimer’s or early-stage dementia were evaluated to identify potential contributors to cognitive decline using brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), genetic testing and other biomarkers. The scientists then designed an individualized, precision medical protocol for each patient.

“Mainstream medicine has been going about [Alzheimer’s treatment] the wrong way. I was taught to make a diagnosis, then write a prescription for something that doesn’t work,” says Dr. Dale Bredesen, a co-contributor to the aforementioned study. Recent trials have suggested that current pharmaceutical treatments for Alzheimer’s, such as Donanemab, merely slow the rate of disease progression, rather than reverse its effects. With his personalized, precision-medicine approach, Bredesen aims to do better. He equates Alzheimer’s to COVID-19, noting, “When the pandemic hit, nations entered protection mode. Economies suffered and went into a recession. In the same way, receptors within our brain can also go into a recession or protection mode. However, when these same receptors receive adequate resources, they continue to grow and make connections. Neurons shift from protection mode to connection mode, reversing the effects of Alzheimer’s.”

THE BREDESEN PROTOCOL

Based on his research, Bredesen asserts that Alzheimer’s is the result of an imbalance in the brain’s neuroplasticity signaling. He has identified 36 factors that can trigger downsizing in the brain, including metabolic derangement, poor nutrient status, lack of trophic support [chemical signaling] and exposure to viruses. The Bredesen Protocol is designed to change a patient’s biochemistry to correct those imbalances by addressing patient-specific triggers. Apollo Health, where Bredesen is chief science officer, has developed a software algorithm that uses patient data from medical questionnaires, laboratory testing and cognitive assessments to offer an analysis of the patient’s cognitive risk factors and a personalized treatment plan designed to prevent and reverse cognitive decline. The patient works with practitioners and coaches trained in the protocol to implement the treatment plan, which covers seven areas: nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress, brain stimulation, detoxification and supplements. The individualized nature of Bredesen’s Protocol is foundational to the program’s success. To learn more or to find a practitioner or coach trained in the Bredesen Protocol visit ApolloHealthCo.com/bredesen-protocol. Conscious Eating

Processed Food Addiction by Sheila Shea

4. Ultra processed foods, such as soda, ice cream, breakfast cereal and prepackaged meals. The book Processed Food Addiction: Foundations, Assessment, and Recovery proposes a new approach of treating overeating as an addiction to processed foods, that could provide an answer to the epidemic of obesity and the metabolic syndrome.

Damage Incurred by Processed Food

The pandemics of obesity and metabolic syndrome continue to spread globally. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions that occurs together, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes, has been estimated at 93 percent of the public. The metabolic syndrome has grown to include central obesity (abdominal visceral fat), insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hypertension, prothrombotic state, proinflammatory state, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, reproductive disorders, cancer and cognitive decline. The addictive changes to the brain associated with both drug and processed food use may help clarify why overeaters cannot control their consumption of processed food products, just as drug addicts have lost control over drug use. Neuroimaging such as structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (s/fMRI) and positron tomography (PET) demonstrate specific neurological changes that are common to both drug abuse and overeating.

F

ood addiction can be defined as the compulsive consumption of food despite a lack of hunger or a desire to stop eating. Processed food addiction (PFA) is a disease that disrupts mental, emotional, behavioral and physical well-being.

UPFs make up three quarters of the U.S. food supply and about 60 percent of Americans’ daily caloric intake. A growing number of studies link them to poor brain health, including an increased risk of dementia, depression and anxiety.

The 11 diagnostic criteria found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th Ed (DSM 5) for substancerelated addiction disorders include: unintended use, failure to cut back, time spent, cravings, failure to fulfill roles, interpersonal problems, activities given up, physically hazardous use, use in spite of consequences, tolerance and withdrawal.

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey showed that from 1999 to 2018, highly processed foods accounted for the majority of energy intake in those aged 2 through 19 years. Individuals with the highest rates of UPF consumption reported higher levels of confusion, slowed thinking, unwanted or obsessive thoughts, irritability and feelings of sadness. Consumption of highly processed foods may also disrupt the gut microbiome.

The most widely used measure of an ultra processed food (UPF) was developed in 2009 by researchers in Brazil. The NOVA food classification system assigns food and beverages to one of four groups: 1. Unprocessed and minimally processed foods, such as fruits, vegetables, milk and meat. 2. Processed culinary ingredients, including white sugar, butter and oils derived from seeds, nuts and fruits. 3. Processed foods, such as tomato paste, bacon, canned tuna and wine. 24

Helpful Solutions and Considerations

Dr. Guido Gerardi Lavin, a pediatrician and former president of the Senate, led the nation of Chile in May 2012 to become the first nation to ban junk food marketing to children. Real food prevents metabolic syndrome. Processed food causes metabolic syndrome. The goal is to promote the availability and consumption of real food—the meat, the dairy, the produce. In “The Case for Taste Bud Rehab”, published by U.S. News in 2013, Dr. David Katz, MD, writes, “As you trade up your choices and cut out superfluous sugar, salt, trans fat and food chemicals,

you also put your taste buds through rehab. Shifting steadily to more wholesome foods means reducing the time taste buds spend each day bathing in sugar, salt and food chemicals. Greater taste sensitivity happens as a result. When people prefer better food, eating well is not a chore, it’s a preference. I believe we can all get there from here.” According to a 2019 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), sugary drink sales in Philadelphia have dropped by 38 percent since the city adopted a tax. Author of The Real Meal Revolution, Tim Noakes, MD, PhD, states, “In my opinion, it’s the sugar/processed food addiction. In other words, eating foods that are not satiating. To prevent obesity/type 2 diabetes one has to find the foods that are satiating and allow one to eat infrequently—i.e., intermittent fasting.” Vera Tarman, MD, an addictions doctor, wrote her book Food Junkies as a guide to cope with compulsive overeating problems by drawing on patients’ stories of recovery. The book contains the latest research on food addiction as well as practical recovery strategies for people facing the complicated challenges of comfort overeating, eating disorders and food addictions. Addiction requires clients to learn a new way of preparing food as they wean themselves off of convenience foods. Patience and pacing are offered as keys to success in managing recovery from the severe mental illness that is food addiction. Sheila Shea, MA is Director of Intestinal Health Institute, in Tucson. Electromagnetic Fields as Home Health Hazards Is it time for an EMF assessment?

radiation frequencies. Examples of sources are dimmer switches, compact florescent light bulbs and solar power inverters.

Why do an EMF assessment?

Despite the telecommunication industry’s efforts to inform the public otherwise, the science is abundantly clear that overexposure to EMFs puts stress on our bodies at the cellular level. It thus increases our risks of a wide range of diseases ranging from Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s to cancer and, additionally, to DNA damage and reproductive harm (see ehtrust.org/science). Common symptoms of exposure to unsafe levels of EMFs are headaches, sleep disturbances, skin rashes, heart palpitations, ringing in the ears, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, depression and anxiety. The symptoms are alleviated with distance or elimination of the source. As much as 30 percent of the U.S. population suffers from electromagnetic sensitivity (EMS), with 5 percent experiencing severe symptoms. These percentages will only increase as the amounts of EMF-emitting devices and infrastructure increase.

G

MOs, Red Dye #40, glyphosate, asbestos, mold—and now EMFs? Like these other environmental toxins, electromagnetic fields negatively affect our health if we are exposed to too much for too long. Levels of EMFs in our homes are rapidly rising, and protective laws and public policy will take time to catch up with the science, as they did for cigarette smoking. Meanwhile, it’s up to us to protect ourselves and our families. EMF assessments give you the essential information you need to do so. They entail measuring levels of EMFs, determining their source and helping you decide whether and how to mitigate them.

What are electromagnetic fields?

Here are some reasons why people have EMF assessments of their homes: • As a preventative measure: to maintain a toxin-free lifestyle for long-term health and longevity of family members. • They or a family member suffers from electromagnetic sensitivity (or associated environmental illnesses like mold sensitivity, Lyme disease or Multiple Chemical Sensitivity) and want to stop debilitating symptoms. • They have existing chronic illnesses that can be exacerbated by EMFs and need a healing environment.

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are waves of energy that radiate into the air around us. Unlike other toxins (for example, factory smoke-stack pollution), they are invisible and odorless, which is one reason why many people are not aware of them.

• To protect children, who are more vulnerable to EMFs than adults due to their smaller heads, thinner skulls, higher brain water content and far longer lifetime exposure.

We humans have lived in harmony with natural EMFs from the earth and sun for over 200,000 years. Artificial EMFs came into our lives 150 years ago following the invention of electricity. More recently, with the digital revolution has come an explosion of radio frequency (or “microwave”) radiation that has greatly increased with the 5G rollout. Along with our fellow plants and animals, we are now exposed to this radiation from hundreds of devices—from cell towers and smart meters outside of buildings to Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones and even baby diapers and “smart” toys within.

Home EMF assessments differ depending on the consultant. The lead assessor at EMF Wellness Tucson here in the Old Pueblo is Lisa Smith, a Building Biology certified Electromagnetic Radiation Specialist. Here’s how she conducts her “Whole Home” assessments.

There are four types of artificial (human-made) EMFs: electric fields, magnetic fields, radio frequency (RF) radiation and Dirty Electricity. Electric and magnetic fields are emitted from wired sources such as power lines and electronic devices and appliances—anything that can be plugged into an outlet. In contrast, RF radiation is emitted from wireless sources of EMFs. The radiation is used to move information from one place to another through the air. Lastly, Dirty Electricity is electric fields contaminated with RF 26

Let’s get practical. How are they done?

Preliminaries. The assessment starts before she even gets to your house with an online search for nearby cell towers, including “5G” small cells that can be very close to homes. After greeting family members,

including pets, and getting a tour of the home, she gives a short education session. She goes over what EMFs are, their health effects and how the assessment will proceed. Since cell phones emit strong RF radiation, Smith makes sure everyone knows how to turn off the RF antennas on their phones and that these are off during the assessment. Exterior. Next comes measurement of EMFs to the exterior of the home. Smith conducts a thorough check for RF radiation on all sides of the house, measuring any radiation from cell towers and neighbor’s devices like routers. She carefully measures radiation emitted by your own and neighbors’ electric utility meters, which is becoming even more important as TEP pushes to install “smart” meters (which emit frequent pulses of radiation 24/7) across the Tucson area. She also checks for RF emissions from gas and water meters and from solar data monitoring systems. Finally, she assesses magnetic fields from nearby powerlines and home electrical equipment. All of these exterior readings help to understand the sources of EMFs you are exposed to on the interior of your home. Interior. Moving inside, Smith checks for RF radiation, magnetic fields and Dirty Electricity in all high-use rooms—rooms where people sit, stand or sleep for many hours a day. She starts with the bedrooms, the most important when it comes to EMF safety. EMF-free sleep is vital to peoples’ resilience to daily toxin exposures and thriving health-wise. Exposure to electric fields from live wiring in walls and nearby electronic devices like lamps, clocks and CPAP machines when sleeping disrupts melatonin production. She thus puts a strong emphasis on accurately measuring your bed Body Voltage (electricity on your body). Next, she turns to assessment of RF radiation and electric fields in home offices, a place where people often spend time in close proximity to EMF-emitting devices like computers, printers, wireless phones and lamps. The assessment rounds up with scans of your living and dining rooms, kitchen and laundry appliances. In each area, exterior or interior, Smith documents the levels of EMFs found and their sources, in some cases helping to mitigate them on the spot. After comparing the levels found with sciencebased Building Biology safety guidelines, she gives you recommendations for mitigating any unsafe EMFs, making every effort to meet you where you are regarding your use of electronic devices. Upon request, she writes a report detailing the findings and provides follow-up assistance. The cost of a Whole Home EMF assessment depends on the square footage of your home, the number of bedrooms and offices, the presence of solar power and other particulars of the home. The typical range is from $400 to $700. Shorter assessments focused on one room (bedroom, office) or EMF source (cell tower, smart meter, power lines, smart refrigerator) cost less, from $150 to $300. 30th Anniversary by Kimberly Whittle Humans are social creatures by nature, and leaning into community is key to a long and healthy life. Look no further than the five so-called Blue Zones in places around the planet where people regularly live to be 100 years old. While eating nutritious food and exercising regularly are important aspects to a healthy lifestyle, Dan Buettner, a Blue Zones expert, believes part of the secret to a long and healthy life is finding purpose and doing it with help from a meaningful community. Buettner’s observations are supported by research. An article published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine summarized the significant evidence that connection to a community helps people physically and mentally with improvements in weight control, blood sugar levels, cancer survival, cardiovascular health and overall mental health, as well as a notable mitigation of depression and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. In a Brigham Young University meta-analysis of 148 studies to determine the effect of social relationships on the risk of mortality, researchers reported that social connections with friends, family, neighbors or colleagues improved the odds of living longer by 50 percent. A Nexus for Consciousness, Healing and Hope Natural Awakenings, a pioneering magazine founded to educate and connect communities for healthy living on a healthy planet, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. In this digital era, Natural Awakenings continues to stand at the vanguard along with its parent company, KnoWEwell, and its Regenerative Whole Health Hub (Hub). ORTHODONTIC ALIGNMENT

he assumption that orthodontic treatment is mainly about appearance has been proven wrong with many studies. The correct alignment of the teeth is crucial for good dental health. Untreated orthodontic problems may contribute to tooth decay, gum disease, bone breakdown, jaw joint problems and loss of teeth. In addition, uncorrected problems can adversely affect one's speech, general health and self-esteem. Self-confidence almost always increases when a smile is improved. Some of the benefits of having orthodontic treatment: • Reduces the risk of gum disease and tooth decay by making it easier to clean your teeth properly. • Prevents your teeth from getting chipped or broken due to misalignment. • Prevents your teeth from being worn down prematurely or excessively.
