COMPREHENSION

Earthquakes are one of the most powerful natural disasters on the earth. When large sections of underground rock break and move suddenly, the ground begins to rock and an earthquake is felt. Small earthquakes do not cause much damage, but large ones are disastrous. They have caused buildings and bridges to fall and rivers to change their paths. Earthquakes near mountains and cliffs can cause landslides that cover up the houses and roads below. If a large earthquake occurs under the

ocean, it can cause giant waves called tsunamis which can destroy entire towns. When large earthquakes occur in a city, there is danger of fire caused by broken gas lines and electric lines. It becomes difficult to assist people in need of help or who are

trapped because of damaged telephone lines and broken roadways. Broken telephone lines and damaged roads make it difficult for rescue workers to help people who are in need. Scientists are trying to find ways to predict when an earthquake will happen so that people can be warned ahead of time. The following questions are based on the passage which you have just read. One Stormy Day

Yesterday was the worst day of my life. I do not think I am a coward really, but I was terrified. I hope never again to have such an experience. The day began as usual. We got ready for school and Peter, strange to say, was late for once. The sky was rather cloudy and Mummy said, “Better take your raincoats.” I picked up mine, but Peter hates any sort of coat. He says they look “sissy” and keep him too hot. ADJECTIVES Look at this sentence.

He drives a car.

This sentence gives very little information Now look at this one.

This sentence tells us that he drives a car. It also tells us that it is i) new

The words new, shiny and blue paint a more vivid picture of what the car looks like. We can picture it more easily. These words used to describe the car are called ADJECTIVES.

An adjective is a word used to describe a noun or pronoun.

We say that it modifies the noun or pronoun since it adds more meaning; it gives more details about the noun or pronoun. Take note that when we use more than one adjective to describe a noun or pronoun, we use commas to separate them. COMPARING ADJECTIVES Here are three pencils

When these three pencils are compared we would say The first one is long.

The second one is longer.

The third one is the longest.

The size of the pencils shown above was compared.

Long, longer, longest show three degrees of comparison. long is used when one pencil is being considered. It is not being compared with any other. A quality of the pencil is just being stated.. This is known as the positive degree.

longer is used when two pencils, the first and the second, are compared. This is the comparative degree and is used to state a higher degree of the quality of the pencil. longest is used when the three pencils are compared. It states the highest degree of the particular quality of the pencil. It is used when three or more things are compared Some rules must be followed when forming the comparative and superlative degree of most adjectives. 1. For adjectives which have one or two syllables

To the positive, add -er to form the comparative and –est to form the superlative.

Subject and Verb Agreement Subjects and verbs must agree in number. It is very important to know whether the subject is singular or plural and also to recognize singular and plural verbs. Be knowledgeable of the rules which apply to the particular sentence. Let us get some practice.

A. The pronouns I and you take plural verbs. I travel

However, if the sentence begins with ‘if’ and expresses a degree of uncertainty, use the plural form of the verb. For example: If I were you, I would not go without Dad’s permission..

B. When sentences start with there or here the subject will be placed after the verb. In such a case, always identify the subject correctly and make sure it agrees with the verb. For example:

A collective noun which is singular in number takes a singular verb. But if the collective noun is plural then a plural verb must be used. To make it easier, isolate the collective noun from the items by placing brackets

THE NEGATIVE FORM OF VERBS The affirmative states that an action does take place, has taken place or even will take place. It can also express a state of being. Examples:

The word negative implies NO or NOT.

Sentences using the negative form of the verb indicate that the action stated does not take place, has not taken place or even will not take place. Examples:

They do not walk to school.

The employees are not happy.

(state of being)

When we want to express some verbs in their negative form, NOT is added to the affirmative.

Raymond does not drive carefully.

The negative form of the past tense of the verb is formed by adding DID and NOT to the affirmative. EXAMPLE:
