Chemisier: | Jupe: Nakuin Chaussures: Ted Baker Instagram: @wardrobe237

THE OF

INVASION THE

WAX

PRINT The “Ankara” wax print fabric was until a while a distinct hallmark of the African culture. Basically, it was worn during major traditional ceremonies as daily in the form of loose fitted dresses we call in Cameroon “kabas” (very loose dresses that completely cover the body), or as commonly referred, the gan tunic. Today there is a profound expansion of the print fabric in fashion worldwide. The wax to name but this, is one of the most popular African fabric used in making clothes and accessories. Fabricated largely in Holland and in some African countries such as Ghana, Niger, or the Ivory Coast; the wax print is characterised by warm colours, shimmering typical African graphics that carries messages referring to everyday life, popular culture or even a landmark. Gone is the time when the Ankara cloth was deemed impossible to adapt to Western fashion! Today the wax has become a 'must' in the fashion scene, perfectly defining and rebranding the Afro chic trend of the last five years. Many international designers such as Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, Kenzo, DVF, Stella Jean, to name but a few have fallen for its charm and have been inspired to use the fabric in their collection. The invasion of the wax print is such that it is no longer confined only to the field of fashion, but also in interior design. It is clear that the reinvention of the Ankara fabric has not finished surprising us... Jupe: WardRobe Haut: WardRobe Collier: Sandrine Toua Chaussures: Ted Baker ModeMaisonPR | Page 7

2) How have you both managed to still maintain a private everyday life with your children? Is there a secret to achieving this? Alex: It is very simple to do; we just live a normal life. We don't go to big events but if we have to , we just keep a low profile so we don't cause a commotion. We do cherish our privacy as it is very important for our kids’ stability. Of course we are on social networks but at least we control what we put on. My wife Olivia is so down to earth that she's always laughing at me when someone is a bit too excited to see me! She just sees me like me as Alex, her husband, and I think it's very important for the family stability that we remain as simple as we can with our feet on the ground, you know!

3) What is the best piece of advice you were given when you were single? Alex: Be the type of man you want your sister to get married to. Olivia: My dad told me "Never ever let a man pay for anything for you."

4) What is the best advice you would give to a couple preparing for marriage? Alex: From the beginning, couples usually have a lot of pride and don't realise a relationship is not about forcing it in one direction. The effort need to come from both sides so communication is the key in marriage. If you put pride first, you will forget to communicate and you will then allow the problems to get worse.

1) How do you deal with the We made sure they didn't take it spotlight as a celebrity couple? seriously, that they didn't realise I Alex: Our boys are the main concern for us as we are adults and we already know how to deal with our life. At the very beginning it was easier as we didn't have the kids so we were just living as any other couple. But now that the kids are aware about what is going on around them it is becoming a bit more difficult.

Olivia: Few days before our religious wedding, Alex and I were a little tense. I received a phone call from his uncle Rigobert and this is what he told me "you must never let a problem between Alex and yourself last more than 48 hours. Otherwise it gets worse and at some point both of you will even forget what you were fighting about and you will create an irretrievable distance between you." And you know what? He was absolutely right because it confirms what Alex said, communication is the key!

was taking pictures and signing autographs with random people. Olivia would take them to the side to distract them while I was doing it. Then they started asking questions, they heard remarks from their classmates, they realised that not all the dads were inside football video games like they first thought. So it got complicated lol! But we just deal with this life every day, and we make sure the kids do not take everything for granted.

5) What has love go to do with Valentine's Day? Should there be a specific day of love? Alex: I think yes. There is a day for fathers, mothers, women...So definitely yes but it shouldn't be the only day you treat your partner!

6) What does a day in the Song household look like? What do you do, who does what etc Alex: In the morning my wife gets the kids ready. Then depending on our program, one of us drops them at school. I go to football training and she does a million things which can be very tricky at times for me to understand! She then picks the kids up from school and takes them to their extracurricular activities. In the evening we're all home, having dinner at 7pm roughly then we watch TV while playing with the kids until they go to bed at 8.30pm. We will then watch a movie or one of the crazy girly program Olivia likes to watch. This is simply a day in our house!

7) How do you both deal with moments of disagreement or argument? Alex: We just speak about it and we agree to disagree. We don't force each other to understand each other’s own point of view but we both give our reasons and then find a solution suitable for both of us !

8) Olivia, after 2 adorable kids and life as a wife and businesswoman, you still manage to remain oh so fabulous!! What is the secret? Please spill oh! Olivia: It's not easy oh! I'm not gonna pretend I don't do anything lol! It's permanent work. I exercise a lot; I eat as healthy as possible. I don't refrain myself when I want some good fatty food but I just know that the next day will be a strict one. Women are curvy in my family so I know it's in me too but I'm just fighting it. Of course when I get older, I'll let myself go a bit more – a grandma has to be a bit chubby no?!

9) Alex, you have now left Barca to permanently become a Hammer, how are you coping with life in the East London club and how does it differ to Barcelona? Alex: We were living in London before going to Barcelona and the kids were born here in London so it just feels like home. As long as we're together, we're happy!

10) You are both engaged in running your own businesses; Alex with his clothing brand and Olivia with your boutique and restaurant; would you say you both have always been business minded? Olivia: I've always wanted to work, to have my own business so doing something I love is fulfilling for me as a woman. Alex: I started my brand as a hobby and now that it's growing, I put myself more into it business wise and I am really pleased with how it is going including my other projects which will be launched soon.

11) Style is certainly both your thing ( *inserts thumbs up here lol!* ), what makes a stylish person in your opinion? Style is personal. Some might like your style some might not. The most important is to be confident in what you're wearing and owning it!

12) Finally, what is a signature Olivia style? What is a signature Alex style? Olivia: These days I'm very much into mid length skirts and over the knee boots. Alex: The weirdest things the better!

Here she talks about styling and her new venture Vane polish. 1) Where would you say you got your entrepreneurial streak from? And was it from an early age? Yes, I've always been driven. I remember I would have lemonade stands when I was younger to make a profit and would constantly set up new businesses along the way as I grew up.

3) You have made a huge mark on embellishing the entertainment scene in Nigeria, would you say you have a Veronica Odeka signature in your styling work? I love working with print, colour and layering. So those are part of my aesthetic. 4) Opening your showroom was a great step, is it purely for showroom purposes or do you also sell and which designers do you carry? The showroom is purely for styling purposes and it bridges the gap between designers and buyers and editors.

2) How did you break into styling and were you professionally trained beforehand? I began modelling at the age of 17 and gradually styled as I grew older. I did take classes on the business of fashion at London College of Fashion but my styling skills are in born.

5) The serial entrepreneur that you are, you launched Vane Polish last year, tell us how this idea came about and how you worked to make it a reality. I don't consider myself a serial entrepreneur as my line of work has remained in fashion and beauty however the idea was truly from God as I wanted to expand on my brand with a product and I researched for 2 years before It became a reality.

10) Where is Vane Polish currently sold and do you have any plans to take it around Africa? Cameroon?! Currently we have a flagship store at Wollys mall 27 Fola Osibo lekki and also at 7 House of Tara locations nationwide. Vane polishes are also in 34 different salons nationwide, we would love to expand of course across Africa and Europe as well as America should the right distribution and partnership opportunities arise.

6) How did you decide on the choice of colours and packaging for the bottle? I worked on my sample colour chart for months to develop colours complimentary to brown skin types and alongside the bottle. I knew I wanted the final product to be eye catching and I feel I've achieved that.

11) Finally, what advice would you give to a young entrepreneur who is about to embark on business? Write out a blue print and then go for it, never give up and stay focused no matter what.

7) What are your bestselling colours so far? All 30 colours are selling really well, however my nudes and pastels seem to be favourites. 8) What tips would you give our readers about how to maintain their polish for longer lasting effects? I always advice people to make sure when nails have been painted to dry them properly to ensure 4-5 days’ wear. 9) How to keep healthy looking nails? Get manicures regularly, like every 2 weeks. PETAL PUSHERS

SOLID STRIPES

QUE LINDA

The floral story for spring rings in somewhere between demure, ultra-feminine and even ironic. Think ladylike frocks with English garden patterns and Victorian ruffles, sheer black florals and edgy grunge prints.

The stripe story for spring is all about coloring between the lines, indeed. Bold, layered shades lend even more interest to this graphic tale.

Perhaps the book on designer shelves going into the season was "The Sun Also Rises," because the Euro country of favor is decidedly Spain. Flamenco ruffles, off-theshoulder details and shocks of red have us dreaming of Barcelona in the spring.

6 EMERGING ARTISTS TO WATCH OUT FOR... Get to know these six captivating artists who will capture our musical hearts

stohS citsilaeR

by Aboki

Trying to guess which artist will blow up in any given year is an impossible task. In addition to hard work and talent, there's an almost mind-blowingly complex web of fate, behind-the-scenes players and outright luck behind any seeming overnight success. No one would have guessed that Franko would rule 2015. Some of the names on this list will be more familiar than others, but all artists have the potential to have huge come-ups in 2016. They may not instantly become household names, but they will definitely make their presence known and further solidify their spot in the game. Keep an eye on these guys, and more importantly, check out the incredible work they've already done.

Vault NGOMA Despite being out of the game for two years and only having rapped for a little over a year, Ngoma not only manages to stay relevant online but also manages to pop back with a culturally approved rap single. Ngoma who is unapologetically Cameroonian is clearly ready to put in the work, and with his track like “EKIE” there’s a sense that the world is his for the taking. His music doesn’t scream top the charts, but people are gravitating toward his relatable lyrics and a style full of vigor and spirit. His voice has a way of skating on top of production, filling ears with blunt truth and hard-knock lyricism. He’s an artist with unlimited potential and 2016 will certainly see him evolve.

MIC MONSTA

PASCAL Pascal is young but his street-level observations show perceptiveness far beyond his age. He doesn’t just have great stories, though; his use of metaphors, his ear for melody and the stunning clarity of his voice makes him a master story teller. He often raps about the struggle of trying to be a better man. His reflections on this thirsty generation are as sharp as they come. Pascal makes everything look so simple especially in a time where a lot of rappers throw metaphors and lines in a bid to come off sophisticated, Pascal is more concerned with passing across the message in a way that everybody gets it. He has delivered outstanding guest verses on several songs with the most popular being his verse on Jovi’s “Check Sense”. An artist this motivated to achieve his dream is bound for success, and it’s likely to come sooner than later at this rate.

Buea hasn’t exactly had an easy seat on the throne over the last few years, and the last couple of year’s bickering over who is the most talented rapper hasn’t exactly helped matters. Saying that, Mic Monsta took hold of the Buea rap throne with his verse on King Kong isn’t farfetched. Let’s ignore the fact that the beat was snatched from Vector for a second and concentrate on its lyricism – it’s punchy, yeah, but manages to sidestep the usual 16 bars that fail to tell a story. Mic blew us away when he released the remix to Jovi’s Bwam and since then he’s kept up the momentum with the release of various covers and featuring on other artist’s tracks. He just recently got signed to Kreef Ent and with his EP on the way, 2016 is going to be an interesting year. @

Vault COOLKID BERKA

The young emcee comes out as a breath of fresh air which is much needed especially in this industry where rap seems too serious these days. The C.I.M signed artist has this ere about him that oozes confidence without the luxury of pride. His first single “seriously” made its rounds through the internet and was considerably well received; especially on TRACE URBAN TV where it made its way to the 3rd spot in the Hip Hop countdown. He is as cool as the name predicts and is very well loved within the industry. His determination to make it despite the odds plays a huge role in his career. Like the smart ones say “you cannot execute rightly if you don’t think rightly”.

KISS DANIEL

You can’t begin to talk about the last year in African music without giving a firm acknowledgement to G-Worldwide Entertainments artist Kiss Daniel. His song Woju blew right through the charts and the remix was even better with the assistance of Nigerian Heavyweights Davido and Tiwa Savage. The song spent eleven weeks on the MTV Base Official Naija Top Ten, including six weeks at the number one spot. Kiss Daniel embodies humility, hard work and talent. His latest single “Good time” has been making its rounds so muchso that Starboy WizKid decided to hop on it and create his own version. Kiss has been nominated for an impressive amount of awards and won his fair share but it’s only fair to say that the 21-yearold has only just begun. Kiss Daniel has our attention and we look forward to seeing his ascension as he debuts various projects he's working on.

EMTEE In 2015, the South African rapper shot to fame with the release of Roll up. The song which features AKA and WizKid has been doing very well on the charts; it went on to win him his first award and nomination for the Song of the Year at the 2015 South African Hip Hop Awards. The young MC has been making money from his talents since he was 17 years old and has no plans of stopping anytime soon. He equally released an album in 2015 “Avery” which was named after his son. South Africa has always been known for producing amazing rappers and I believe this parcel will go on to do amazing things this 2016 and beyond.

The most important thing about a Valentine look, is one that rises above all your other looks. While this look has to stop people dead in their tracks, it is important that you are comfortable enough to go to dinner, hit the dance floor, and even go on a romantic walk to end the night. But there is a secret, this outfit has to be an outwards portrayal of the love of self. The key elements may be a glamorous dress, a striking pair of shoes signed off with full glam hair and makeup. BUT, your best accessory is that radiance that comes from within that lets the passerby, and your valentine, know that this is a woman whose beauty comes from within. Valentine's day shouldn't only be about the love from another, but a celebration of the love of self. xoxo @hayet.rida | www.thathayetrida.com
