Forklift Inspections & Pre-operation Checklist
Forklifts are a common sight in many industries. Whether used in warehouses, manufacturing plants, retail applications or elsewhere, forklifts are crucial tools in the daily operations and supply chains of most businesses. Because of this frequent level of use, many operators and nearby pedestrians can become complacent regarding safety protocols. This complacency can have many ill effects, including asset damage, employee discipline, fines, injury, and even death. According to the Operational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), an average of 100 employees are killed each year in forklift accidents, and as many as 95,000 total forklift accidents occur on an annual basis. In many cases, these accidents are avoidable. While Toyota forklifts are carefully manufactured with safety top-of-mind, safety protocols must be followed correctly for operators and pedestrians to be protected. The Importance of Inspection Beyond behavioral causation, injuries and fatalities also stem from detectable equipment failure when employees do not properly inspect and assess equipment before use. Safety regulators, forklift manufacturers, and many companies encourage that forklifts be inspected before operating, but these inspections are often neglected or poorly documented. Safety is an obvious reason that these inspections should be conducted regularly, and so is compliance—thousands of dollars in fines could be levied based on failure to determine forklift safety prior to operation. Protecting company reputation, finances, property, and lives against this sort of failure and related accidents typically requires only one measure be taken—preoperation forklift inspections carried out according to a thorough checklist. In addition to the safety and compliance related aspects of regular forklift inspections, there is also a cost-savings component related to the 6

proactive discovery of issues and predictive maintenance. Discovering problems, or festering problems, sooner helps limit and plan downtime and can be an easier, less expensive repair than a full-blown issue. Creating and adhering to a pre-operation inspection regiment is not inherently difficult, but it does take continuous corporate support and a high level of operator discipline. Forklift Inspection: What Must You Do? In its 29 CFR 1910.178 standard language, OSHA states that forklifts must be inspected either daily, or after each shift in cases where vehicles are in roundthe-clock use. If problems are discovered, they must be reported and the forklift must be removed from service immediately. While there are no mandates in the standard as to precisely how the inspections must be conducted, there are suggested best practices readily available. What Should Go Into a Forklift Daily Checklist? If you do not have a pre-operational checklist for your forklifts established, do not worry—they are fairly intuitive. Manufacturers often provide sample checklists that are updated and customized as necessary. Referencing these directions are your best bet. If you wish to create your own checklist, though, the following are examples of checkpoints that should always be included in your daily forklift inspection: • Check fluid levels (oil, water, and hydraulic fluid, for example) • Check for leaks, cracks and visible defects everywhere on the forklift • Check mast chains visually; avoid the use of hands • Test mast chain tension by lifting the load backrest to eye level—the mast chains should be level and any tilting may signify stretching or broken rollers • Check tire condition, pressure, and look for any cuts or gouges • Determine fork condition, remembering to check the top clip retaining pin and heel • Ensure load backrest extension functions properly • Check functionality of finger guards • Ensure safety decals and nameplates are legible and match the forklift model • Check that the operators’ manual and log book are present and legible

Risk Management Recommendations for Distributors/Dealers
There are several aspects of Commercial insurance and Risk Management to be aware of whether you are a distributor of products or a dealership providing pallet jacks, lifts, etc. to warehouses. The Material Handling distributors have several exposures including what is referred to as Products and Completed Operations. For example, by selling a racking or shelving system you have established an implied warrant that the product is safe and meets Industry, OSHA, and ANSI standards (Product Liability). You may want to confirm that the Manufacturer of the product has adequate USA-based Liability insurance and ask if Broad Form Vendors protection is afforded to their distributors/reps. A certificate of insurance confirming these items from them is a good idea and to keep on file. The Completed Operations exposure starts when a project is completed and is referred to in the insurance world as having a long tail. The installation aspect of Material Handling distributors range from installing their own products to
subcontracting this operation to a third party. In the event that the installation is subcontracted, the distributor should: 1. Have a signed subcontractor agreement with State specific hold harmless -indemnification wording and clearly outline the insurance requirements. This should be reviewed with legal counsel. A certificate of insurance should be obtained from the Sub contractor confirming that the distributor is named as an additional insured for General liability. This is referred to as contractual risk transfer. 2. An installation floater may also be needed depending on the situation. The lift truck dealers have similar exposures; however, many dealers also lease or rent equipment to the warehouse. Again, the rental agreement should have State specific wording and clearly transfer both the General liability and Physical Damage exposure onto the renter (the warehouse). The dealerships should be named as additional insured and loss payee with a certificate of insurance (or copy of the actual endorsement) obtained to confirm coverage. No piece of equipment should ever be rented without a signed rental agreement! The Sales, PM, or Service agreements should have legal review as well. The Real Reason Why Change Initiatives Fail
Many of the major problems that we see which impact the success of organizational change efforts are coordination failures. In short, any organizational problems are only solvable if everyone can agree to do the same thing at the same time. When a team is tasked with implementing change, oftentimes, individuals will not necessarily choose what’s best for the group, but for themselves. People frequently choose what makes sense given existing incentives, which often discourage them from
challenging the status quo. It often makes the most sense to do what everyone else is doing, whether that’s driving on the right side of the road, wearing a suit to a job interview, or keeping your country’s nuclear arsenal stocked up. Take the case of academic publishing. Academic journals publish research within a given field and typically charge for access to it. In order to earn prestige within a field, researchers need to publish in the most respected journals. However, by charging high prices, journals limit the flow of knowledge and slow overall scientific progress. Although it would be better for science as a whole if everyone stopped publishing in journals that charge for access, it isn’t in the interest of any individual scientist to do so. If they did, their career could suffer. We all act out of self-interest, so expecting individuals to risk the costs of going against convention is usually unreasonable. Yet it only takes a small proportion of people to change their mindset to reach a tipping point, where it becomes an incentive for everyone to change

FEATURE STORY CONTINUED their behavior. This is magnified even more if those people have a high degree of influence (I›m talking to you, organizational leaders). The more power those who enact change have, the faster everyone else can do the same. To overcome coordination failures, leaders need to be able to trust that when they act, the rest of the organization will act too. Leaders also need to think beyond the impact of their own actions and actively communicate what will happen when everyone acts as part of a group. And most importantly, leaders need to focus on consistent and broad communication to the entire organization. Successful communication sometimes is not simply a matter of whether a given message is received. It also depends on whether people are aware that other people also received it. For leaders to effectively communicate change, critical information must be “common knowledge,” meaning, “everyone knows about the change and everyone knows that everyone knows it”. The more public and visible the change is, the better. Leaders can prevent coordination failures in the first place by visible guarantees that those who take a different course of action will not suffer negative consequences. In closing, leaders need to understand not only why it can be difficult for people to work together in the best possible way, and how they can create better outcomes through better communication. Why Do Pallet Racks Need to be Plumb?
There are many safety considerations when choosing, installing, and implementing new or used pallet racking to your storage area. While there are many obvious standards to meet, one of the more simple issues, (whether or not your pallet rack is plumb) can create complicated problems for your business. Finished and installed pallet racking is almost always bolted or welded together. Because of this, columns that are leaning or bowed beyond a certain point will have a much lower capacity. This also compromises the safety of your system and increases the risk of collapse. RMI STANDARDS The Rack Manufacturer’s Institute (RMI) has two different ratios regarding this issue with your pallet rack frames or columns. The higher these ratios are, the more likely your racking is to fail. Those ratios are Out-of-Plumb and Out-ofStraight ratios. Out-of-Plumb Ratio RMI defines Out-of-Plumb ratio as follows: “The maximum horizontal distance (inches or millimeters) from the centerline of the column at the floor to a plumb line that extends downward from the centerline of the column at the top shelf elevation divided by the vertical distance (feet or meters) from the floor to the top shelf elevation.” The maximum Out-of-Plumb ratio for filled pallet racking is 1/2 inch per 10 feet of height. When the ratio exceeds this number, the racking must be unloaded and re-plumbed to avoid damage or failure.

Out-of-Straight Ratio RMI defines Out-of-Straight ratio as follows: “The maximum horizontal distance (inches or millimeters) from the centerline at any point on the column to a plumb line from any other point on the column divided by the vertical distance (feet or meters) between the two points.” The Out-of-Straight ratio uses the same formula as Out-Of-Plumb. The limit for any two points on a column cannot exceed 0.05 inches per foot of length, which equates to the 1/2 inch per 10 feet number. There are several factors that can cause Out-of-Plumb or Out-of-Straight issues in columns. Such issues as forklift impact, beam height adjustments, faulty connections, and pallet impact can all affect the structural integrity of your system. RACK INSPECTION Regular inspections are key to preventing more costly damage or failure when it comes to plumb and straight columns. Hiring a racking professional to inspect your systems is always a good idea. Four Things That Do Not Change for Recruiting and Hiring During A Crisis
Unfortunately, there will always be another “crisis” to deal with. Whether it’s a health concern, a business concern with vendors, customers and/or employees, or an economic concern– it looks like these crises may be here to stay for a while. While companies spend time in their ‘war rooms’ making important decision about customer, vendor and employee interactions, there is an important audience that requires your focus and planning as well. Job Candidates. The candidate experience has likely been mapped out and refined by your Human Resources or hiring manager team and is both an art and a science. Representing your brand from the very first interaction, through interviews and onboarding is all about the relationship. In the turbulent times you have ahead of you it becomes even more important to bring your candidate experience to life, even if it’s done from afar. As you think about your strategy to keep the hiring engines on and bring in the talent your organization needs for the future, here are four key elements of the experience that should not change during any crisis. 1. Communication. You will need to communicate in new ways and through different channels, but do not let your touchpoints or interaction with candidates go quiet! It’s even more important now to stay connected through phone, video, text, chat, or carrier pigeon – whatever you use as your remote tool. Consider doubling your efforts to reassure candidates your hiring engine is not going to be turned off during this period. 2. Set Clear Expectations. In your communication, one area to be clear, consistent, and sure about are expectations. If your company has suspended all travel and banned visitors to your office, that is a reasonable business move at this moment. Not telling candidates 18

that you’ve made this move is not! If you had shared with a candidate that they will eventually be invited in for an in-person interview and that can’t happen anymore, be clear about the contingency plan, if the hiring will be paused based on the nature of the role, and when you will take a next step. 3. Keep Interviewing. Video interviewing is not new – but not every company is using it. You don’t need a fancy tool; it can be any two-way video chat that you use to establish a visual connection to your candidates. If you do have a video interviewing tool in place, you can continue to scale your hiring efforts and build a talent pipeline – but make sure you keep #1 and #2 at the forefront of your efforts. If you are not entering a hiring freeze, talent acquisition teams should continue as much of their usual operation as possible. 4. Be Ready. Recruiters are the face of your company for most candidates. Arming them with the latest updates, decisions, business impacts, and positive steps your company is taking during this crisis is very important. Much like you would share a new product release, award, or new executives named at the company, updates about your safety and productivity efforts should be available for Recruiters to share with candidates who will likely have questions about how your organization is protecting employees, the financial impact that might change the company’s outlook, or leading efforts to keep communities safe. It’s a daunting time to worry about your health and the health of those you care about. There are complexities from manufacturing and retail roles that are only done in person, to trying to work in new ways to get a sense for who someone is in more corporate roles without being able to meet them. Companies are asking candidates if they feel comfortable coming to a business location for interviews knowing there might be some risk and both sides trying to navigate the pros and cons in the effort of having the best matched talent in each role. Through all the uncertainty and differing opinions on what the best approach forward is, remember that the candidate experience must remain top of mind. It is your differentiator and how you treat candidates now will impact your ability to hire for the foreseeable future. If you don’t know the answer to timelines, travel guidance, or your office policies are in flux right now, that’s OK!

Lithium-ion Battery Materials And Why Their Chemistry Matters
Though “lithium-ion battery” is typically used as a general, all-encompassing term, there are actually at least a dozen different lithium-based chemistries that make up these rechargeable batteries. Some of the most common types include: • Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) • Lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) • Lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) • Lithium manganese oxide (LMO) • Lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA) • Lithium titanate (LTO) However, material handling equipment is typically powered by either lithium iron phosphate or lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide chemistries. Below we’ll explore these chemistries and how they play a role in making lithium-ion batteries one of the most popular choices of power for material handling equipment. Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) Lithium iron phosphate is more compact and energy dense, making it an excellent choice for us in material handling applications, such as powering equipment like electric forklifts, walkie pallet jacks, and end riders. When you plug a lithium-ion battery into a device or piece of equipment, the positively-charged ions move from the anode to the cathode. The anode stores the lithium and is typically made from carbon. The cathode also stores the lithium and is made from a chemical compound that is a metal oxide. In batteries with lithium iron phosphate chemistry, phosphate serves as the cathode material. As a result, the cathode becomes more positively charged than the anode. 20

This, in turn, attracts negatively-charged electrons to the cathode. A separator in the cell includes electrolytes that form a catalyst. This promotes ion movement from the cathode to the anode and back. As the electrons begin working their way toward the cathode, the battery system is designed to force them to go through the device and use that energy to generate power. Lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable. When recharging, the lithium ions go through the same process, but in the opposite direction. This restores the battery for additional use. A battery with lithium iron phosphate chemistry offers high performance and low resistance, and enjoys a longer life cycle, greater thermal stability and enhanced safety. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are also more tolerant to being fully charged and don’t experience as much stress as other types of lithium-ion chemistries when they endure prolonged high voltages. Enhanced Safety Because the battery pack in a lithium-ion battery is completely sealed in design, there is no risk of spills. Unlike lead-acid batteries, a lithium-ion battery’s design also does not require a “watering process” to keep fluid levels at a certain minimum. This watering process, necessary for lead-acid, can be a dangerous procedure if not performed correctly. Opportunity Charging A typical charge or use cycle for a lithium-ion battery is 7.2 hours of use, 1 to 2 hours to charge and another 7.2 hours of use. This allows crews to opportunity charge when on break or in between shifts. However, lead-acid batteries run only about 5.4 hours before requiring a charge, and then require another 8 hours to charge and 8 hours to cool down before the battery can be used again. Longer Lifespans Lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries offer different lifespans. Lithium-ion batteries last between 2,000 and 3,000 cycles, whereas lead-acid batteries typically only last between 1,000 and 1,500 cycles. Maintenance Free The design of a lithium-ion battery reduces the amount of time workers must dedicate for maintenance. In
FEATURE STORY CONTINUED addition to not requiring watering maintenance, lithiumion batteries also have battery management systems that perform cell balancing to keep the battery at a healthy state of charge. Safe Discharge A lithium-ion battery’s chemistry allows the battery to be safely discharged down to a 20% capacity. However, lead-acid batteries can only be safely discharged down to 30% to 50% capacity. Temperature Resiliency Lithium-ion batteries are extremely resilient to high and low temperatures. Lithium iron phosphate, the chemistry used by Flux Power, is especially resilient. Optional heaters also allow you to safely use these battery packs in cold temperatures. Bottom Line Lithium-ion batteries are rapidly becoming a go-to source of power for forklifts in many industries. In particular, material handling operations are utilizing lithium iron phosphate chemistries to improve
performance and enhance safety. Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NMC Lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide chemistries are very energy dense, which means they provide a higher level of performance, if the equipment is designed to support it. The high charge and discharge rates make it a more popular choice for electric vehicles, such as e-bikes, buses, cordless power tools and other electric power trains. But a high discharge rate is only beneficial if you plan to use the equipment for shorter periods of time. Since most material handling equipment is used for an entire 8 to 10-hour shift, or even multiple shifts, the improved performance does not offer a benefit. This type of battery chemistry uses a combination of nickel, manganese and cobalt for the cathode. Though the inclusion of nickel gives the cell high-specific energy, this also reduces its stability. The inclusion of manganese, on the other hand, offers low internal resistance, but also features low specific energy. Combined, however, the chemistries work together to make this type of battery a suitable choice for certain types of equipment. U.S. Great Lakes ports report mixed results, COVID-19 still impacting some cargoes U.S. Great Lakes ports reported mixed results in June with strong shipments of aluminum, road salt, and grain but continuing decreases in commodities related to steel production and manufacturing. The St. Lawrence Seaway also reported that from April 1 to June 30, nearly 11.7 million metric tons of cargo was shipped via the bi-national trade corridor. While these volumes were down 8 percent compared to the same time period in 2019, cargo shipments improved in June narrowing the year-over-year decline.
Monthly Confidence Index for Equipment Finance Industry Steady in July, COVID-19 Impact Survey Data Released The index reports a qualitative assessment of both the prevailing business conditions and expectations for the future as reported by key executives from the $900 billion equipment finance sector. Overall, confidence in the equipment finance market is 45.3, steady with the June index of 45.8. The Foundation also releases highlights of the COVID-19 Impact Survey of the Equipment Finance Industry, a monthly survey of industry leaders designed to track the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the equipment finance industry. From 77 survey responses collected from July 1-11, results show that 95% of equipment finance companies have offered payment deferrals. 77% of companies expect that the default rate will be greater in 2020 than in 2019. A majority (83%) of companies have not furloughed or laid off employees. 2020 Outlook Forecasts Improvement In Equipment, Software Investment After severe declines in equipment and software investment in Q1 and Q2 due to the effects of COVID-19 and the impact of social distancing measures on the U.S. economy, investment in equipment and software is projected to improve relative to the first half of the year as businesses reopen. With substantial uncertainty owing to the pandemic, equipment and software investment growth is forecast to between -5.6 and -9.6 percent. With GDP growth measured relative to the prior quarter unless Q3 involves an extended nationwide economic shutdown, positive growth for the U.S. economy is highly likely in the second half of the year, with an annual growth rate forecast to between -4.0 percent and -7.3 percent according to the Q3 update to the 2020 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook released today by the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation.
