ne of the most symbiotic relationships in your dealership is the one between your parts and service department. The cooperation between these groups is crucial and communication is key for the two to work effectively to service your customers. Yet there are still times where it seems like the parts and service departments are more in a battle against one another. We’re going to look at some things each department can do to work together rather than against one another. The Service Department Undoubtedly there are members of the service department both technicians and support staff that have had something negative to say about parts. Those might include “I can’t believe they got that wrong I told them exactly what I needed.” Or “I gave them that quote 2 days ago why can’t they get it back to me.” There are a couple things to keep in mind when it comes to these negative comments, one

it makes the entire dealership look bad, two maybe there is a root cause that contributed to the issue. Here’s one key thing when dealing with your parts department, information is king! We all know by now that the single best thing you can provide is Model and Serial number of the lift you are working on, but there is more to it than that. Are you working on the mast, a cylinder in the mast, an attachment, or the engine? If so did your technician get the information not only off the unit that they are servicing but also the information off the corresponding piece they are working on? Mast numbers and cylinder numbers are increasingly important to make sure that the proper parts are located, some brands don’t manufacture their own masts so getting these numbers are crucial to getting the right part. In the case of attachments, most manufactures note that an attachment is on the unit but ...

parts and service support come from the manufacture of the attachment not the manufacture of the lift truck. The more information you provide to your parts department the more accurate they can be. From the service management side are you training your technicians to capture this information? Do your technicians have to go back and get this information in order to get the right part? Training the technicians to get the right information the first time will be key to not only getting the right parts but also to better serve your customer. In regards to quoting jobs a lot of the same things apply as above communication and information is king. Keep in mind though just as your technicians can not be masters of every brand of lift out there your parts department has its strength and weaknesses as well. If you’re working on competitive equipment it may be tougher for your parts department to get the information they need from their sources. Also establish an expectation for quoting, your service and parts manger should come together and agree on a reasonable time frame on quoting parts for service jobs, one suggestion might be one fixed time for equipment you represent and another time frame on competitive equipment. The Parts Department Just as above there are also some negative grumblings about the service department that come from parts personnel. Just as above it creates a negative view not only inside but also outside of the organization. There are a couple things that parts needs to keep in mind, one your service department is your best customer, they are also your most captive customer. The other thing is, above all have some empathy. It is easy in parts to forget that the technicians that are calling in or in front of them at the counter are also the ones that are in front of the customer more than anyone. They are really the first line of defense for the dealership and see and get more grief at times especially when something goes wrong. So how can parts help the service department and foster a positive relationship. First off be transparent, if the technician you are working with doesn’t provide you the info you need make sure to ask for it. Make sure that when you’re pulling parts either for a job or for van replenishment that all those parts are marked with part numbers, this will make billing easier. Help the technician communicate info to the customer, this is especially crucial when it comes to recovery costs like freight. Make sure that you communicate to the technician what the options are to bring parts in and how much those options will cost. Don’t hesitate to offer add on parts for

the technician, if they are ordering brake shoes as about associated parts like spring kits, wheel cylinders, and seals. Parts can also help in the training process for new and senior technicians by explaining, not telling, why certain pieces of information are so important. Management Everything above has been looked at mostly from a front line view, technicians and parts counter people. Management first and foremost has to set the standard for cooperation and understanding. If your parts and service managers are at odds then chances are the departments overall are going to be at odds. It is important for parts and service managers to work together to build a strong aftermarket effort for the dealership. First find some common ground, Parts gets about $.25 per dollar of labor billed which is great for the dealership and the parts revenue and profit number. For service having a parts department means that management of inventory and tracking down of parts is handled for you keep your technicians out there doing what they do best. Both Parts and Service Management should understand how important inventory on the vans is and how crucial billing out parts accurately is key to making sure items get returned to the technicians and keeping track of the inventory. Most importantly work together, it’s easy to remember you’re a profit center but a little give and take should be common place. Service will screw up but Parts will also screw up, work together to solve issues and when issues do come up don’t just point the finger at one another. Remember that Parts and Service Rework affect your dealership while you might be recovering your revenue you’re really just billing yourself. It’s easy for both parts and service to forget that you’re working together to service your customer better. It’s important to keep in mind that attitude on both sides will make a big difference, technicians and counter people should not berate each other, and management should step in when big issues between personnel occur. Fostering that great relationship starts at the top your management needs to be the one championing the relationship between the two departments. Your goal should be to have the best dealership, not just the best Parts Department or Service Department.

Narrow Aisle to Introduce a New AC Powered Flexi Articulating VNA Forklifts

arrow Aisle, Inc. announced that it will introduce an AC powered, broader range, of its Flexi articulating VNA forklifts at the upcoming MODEX Show in Atlanta, GA, March 17-20, 2014. Narrow Aisle owns the exclusive manufacturing and marketing rights to the Flexi in the Americas, North, Central & South.

The current Flexi G4 series will be re-introduced with AC power and marketed as the Flexi AC. Seven new models will be introduced ranging from a smaller capacity unit, the Flexi VNA AC, which will work in aisles as narrow as 6’, to a larger capacity HiMax AC 1350 with maximum fork heights

Electri-Flex Retrofits Facility with Acuity Brands Daylighting to Enhance Quality of Light, Achieve Energy Savings

ewly installed Acuity Brands, Inc. Signature Series prismatic skylights from Sunoptics® helped Electri-Flex Company, a leader in electrical conduit design and manufacturing, retrofit an existing 53,000 square-foot industrial building for its new Roselle, Ill. manufacturing plant. The company installed 56 Signature Series skylights that cover approximately 3 percent of the roof area, and project quality daylighting from ceiling heights of approximately 40 feet. The skylights significantly enhance the quality of light by increasing the lightlevels from 30 to 40 footcandles to 55 to 62 footcandles. Additionally, the skylights help Electri-Flex save on energy attributed to both HVAC and electric lighting. With the reduction of electric lighting, Electri-Flex’s building achieved a 30-degree reduction in temperature. “We were going for the ‘wow!’ factor with the skylights and resulting interior light,” said Ed Berbeka, project manager for

Electri-Flex. “We were just amazed at how much light comes into the building, even after we turned all of the electric lights off.” Signature Series prismatic skylights from Sunoptics are designed to provide the maximum amount of light transmission into a building while still maintaining 100% diffusion. Signature Series skylights are available in single, double and triple glazed to meet thermal requirements, and are American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) and National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) approved. The prismatic skylights feature an insulated thermal break, condensation gutter and exterior weeping gutter, foam curb seal and integral-frame weather sweep. Yesterday my wife received an email from a friend of ours from Scotland. She asked Barabra to do a favor for a friend of hers. It involved buying a particular boot which if purchased in the States would save $100. The boot cost nearly $500 before the savings. Barbara did as she was asked and everybody seemed happy. Then, we came across another boot that appeared to offer the same style … which was selling for less than $100 … without any special discount. My point is simple. People buy what they perceive as value and that which satisfies their particular wants and desires. Some people, (many people) purchase products and services based on their own criteria. $100 vs $500. Same style. Same feel. Same look. But are they the same? For an extra 300 geeters I would

Can You Distinguish Between the Different Variations of Nissan H20 Engines?

t is often a problem for parts and service personnel to distinguish between the different variations of Nissan H20 engines. The Nissan H20 engine is used in Komatsu, Kalmar AC, Nissan/Datsun, TCM forklifts and others. The following are differences helpful for proper engine identification. NISSAN H20 The Nissan H20 is the oldest variation and appears in several forms. The engine serial number begins with “S” and the thermostat housing mounts directly on top of the cylinder head. There are also two different oil pan depths. The shallow pan is 4 1/2” from the pan rail to bottom of pan and the deep pan is 6”.

There are two types of cylinder heads, “two-bolt thermostat” and “three-bolt thermostat.” When looking at the bare head with the housing removed, there is either two bolt holes directly across from each other or three bolt holes evenly spaced around the thermostat opening. This is where there is always confusion. The thermostat housing must be removed to see the bolt holes. Both styles have three bolts in the actual housing. Finally, the oil filter spins onto an aluminum oil filter housing bolted to the side of the block. Features • Engine serial number begins with “S” • Two-bolt or three-bolt thermostat

• Oil filter spins onto housing • Shallow or deep oil pan NISSAN H20-II The Nissan H20-II is the newest variation. The engine serial number begins with “K” and the thermostat housing does not bolt directly onto the cylinder head. Instead a coolant tube that is pressed into the side of the head connects to the radiator. The oil filter spins directly onto the block. Features • Engine serial number begins with “K” • Coolant tube pressed in side of cylinder head • Oil filter spins directly onto block NISSAN H20-K The Nissan H20-K is the middle variation used for only a short period of time. This variation is a combination of the H20 and H20-II. The engine serial number begins with “K” but the cylinder head is the same as the H20 twobolt. The difference in the shortblock is that the oil filter spins directly onto the block instead of an oil filter housing. Features • Engine serial number begins with “K” • Two-bolt thermostat housing on cylinder head • Oil filter spins directly onto block In summary, the way to identify the H20 engine is by combining the first letter of the serial number, the cylinder

head style, and if the oil filter spins directly onto the block or housing. Using this criteria will result in parts and service representatives ordering the correct remanufactured Nissan H20 engine the first time. This is always a good idea because your tires will get flat spots on them. If you are running just air tires this may not be a problem but if you have foam-filled tires flat sport can be a big problem. A problem that will not go away. Once you get flat spots, that’s it. You’ll always be going down the road going “bump, bump bump…” 1. Empty the hopper before packing up the machine. 2. Jack Up the machine at the designated location. Use a hoist or jack capable of supporting the weight of the machine. Use Jack stands to support the machine. The rear jack location is the center of the rear bumper behind the back tire.

For those not familiar with Tennant S20 Sweeper. Here’s a little history. This machine was introduced in 2011. It is Tennant’s Mid-Sized Sweeper with a hopper/debris capacity of 750 lbs. 6. Some people drain the radiator but I think it is not absolutely necessary. At this point I believe you are done preparing your machine for storage. The only other item would be the hydraulic system. As long as you have maintained the hydraulic system (i.e. regularly change the fluid and filters) on a schedule recommended by your OEM, you will be good to go. I have seen some technicians even remove the spark plugs and cover the holes with masking tape. I do not feel this is necessary, however, you will want to replace them in the opening of Spring. I think there’s no harm with this exception.

The Pulse of the Third Industrial Revolution By: Chu Jiwang

he tide of the third industrial revolution characterized by I.T. is sweeping across the globe. I, an entrepreneur, cannot simply watch as a spectator. This past January, I attended Automate 2013 in Chicago to experience a piece of the third industrial revolution. The revolution in I.T. application has brought earthshaking changes around the globe — I know from my own experience. Thirty years ago, when I installed a telephone at home, my neighbors were all envious. Later, I founded my business, Ningbo Ruyi, and all my products were sold through Zhejiang Machinery & Equipment Import & Export Co., Ltd. (ZMEC). One day, I called a salesman and asked him to mail a contract to me. To my surprise, he replied, “Mail? Don’t you have a fax?” I was in the dark and asked my translator, “What’s a ‘fax’?” I soon bought a fax machine, and began sending contracts with my signature to Hangzhou, where the headquarters of ZMEC is stationed. It only took seconds: never so fast! After a few years, my company began to conduct business via instant messaging and email, but I remained enamored by the fax. “Dad, people use cloud computing today,” my son once asserted. “Huh?” I muttered. I.T. has developed so fast that I’m too old to catch up.

My mind raced back 20 years to when I first visited Chicago and walked around in McCormick Place. My business was still small. To save money, I helped three coworkers move a hand hydraulic carrier to the elevator to exhibit it in an area of only nine square meters. Today, my products are displayed in a 200-square-meter space in the center of the exhibition hall, and my trademark glitters in the bright lights. Nevertheless, I convinced myself not to rest on my laurels. I saw a large space for improvements in the details of my products. “How did you make it so fine?” I asked my foreign counterparts and found that they use robots instead of manual labor, both improving craftsmanship and minimizing costs. The second industrial revolution in Europe and America took place a hundred years earlier than in China, laying a solid economic foundation for the rapid development in industry and economy. These regions are still leading the third industrial revolution. China has seen great progress in its economy thanks to the implementation of economic reform and opening up policies, now chasing the pace of developed countries. However, there is still a long way to go due to its foundation in many aspects. China’s industrial pattern needs to be improved because most of the sectors are still extensive and labor-intensive.

What shall we do then in the third industrial revolution? Different companies should formulate different plans for future development. Big labor-intensive companies should try more innovative ways to transform, while hi-tech enterprises should waste no time participating in the third industrial revolution so they can catch up and lead the world in economics and technology. “One of the best features of the third industrial revolution is robotic production,” my son asserted, which I saw with my own eyes at Automate 2013 in Chicago. A special area of the exhibition showcased robotic workers welding, assembling and dissembling, delivering coke and beer, and even helping a doctor with a test tube operation. My eyes confused: I was wandering an unmanned world, a better place created by the third industrial revolution.
