o you say there is dust coming out from the rear of your sweeper. And, it’s pretty bad. The definition of “pretty bad” is different from person-toperson. Let’s reiterate or redefine how badly. A cloud of dust is bad, yes, by any definition. These sorts of things build up over time and just do not occur overnight. Now, the question is this cloud of dust: i.e. is it coming out of the bottom rear near ground level of the sweeper or is it more the engine grill of the sweeper? You say both areas. Yes, both are bad (not good). You have a lot of work in front of you. However, do not fret, this can be resolved. By your description I know it is going to be all sweeper related and not the engine. Let’s get to work and help him get his sweeper back to protocol: First, the dust that is coming underneath the sweeper is all main broom chamber related. Let me explain. The main sweeping broom is attached to the machine width wise and surrounded by a chamber of skirts. These skirts create a vacuum around the broom allowing the broom to sweep large and small debris without creating a lot of external dust. Without these skirts there would be no vacuum and a constant dust plume. As you can now understand, it is obvious the skirts need to be replaced. Usually, this is not a difficult task. There will be usually two skirts behind the main broom. These generally are held on with metal retainers. Remove these retainers and install the new skirts. You then reinstall the retainers. In some instances, the retainers need to be replaced so check this item before the skirts are ordered. You may need the retainers as well. The side skirts are usually replaced in the same manner. Just refer to your manual.

I am going to wait to tell you what sweeper we are working on. It could be a Power Boss SW90 or it could be an Advance 6250. It also could be an American Lincoln 3366XP. But, it’s not. We are now at the point to start addressing the dust cloud coming out of the engine grill. As I stated earlier it is not a problem with the engine. It’s the dust control vacuum system. A number of items could be affecting the ability to hold the dust in the hopper. Let’s go with a check list: 1. Make sure that the hopper is emptied on a regular basis. When the hopper is full the dust has to go somewhere. Just think about it. 2. Clean or replace the hopper filter. This filter works on the same principle as a furnace filter, so keep it replaced at least every 100 hours. 3. Lastly, check your vacuum motor fan assembly. This apparatus does all of the sucking and always at the top, or near the top, of the hopper. If this goes bad, it can create all kinds of problems. Dust control is one of those problems. This fan assembly could be belt driven or hydraulic driven. Again, refer to your owner’s manual. Finally, the machine that we are having a dust control problem is the Tennant 6650 rider sweeper. But it could have been every one of the sweepers mentioned earlier in this article.

t’s easy to come to the conclusion that the loading dock area can be one of the most hazardous areas of your operations. Maybe that has something to do with the fact that 25% of all accidents occur at the loading dock. The majority of these accidents result in the dreaded back injury that, according to OHSA, ultimately ends up costing U.S. companies upwards of $80 billion dollars annually. And with staggering numbers like these, not even the largest and safest companies have any doubt that the loading dock is potentially dangerous, but with adequate safety measures to address these top areas of concern, it can be a safer place to venture.

1.) Loading dock door drop offs. With a height above the driveway of more than four feet, open and unprotected

dock doorways have the potential to be an accident waiting to happen. Equipment and signage that warns employees of danger ahead to avoid driving off the dock in a forklift or stepping too far and falling are critical safety measures. In the past, chains or thin weak metal were used to ‘prevent’ falls. Hardly an effective means of stopping a speeding fork lift. Of course the best way to prevent driving or falling off the dock is to keep the door closed. However, in situations where the door needs to be open, ventilation in warmer climates for example, there are a couple options that are effective safety measures. You can take dock leveler safety to a new level by installing hydraulic dock levelers equipped with a barrier lip. This safety feature is designed to prevent accidental roll-off and is far stronger than conventional dock leveler lips. When your dock leveler is in a stored position, the lip extends above the floor by 5 inches. This solid steel barrier stops forklifts or other traffic and avoids the all too common ‘drop offs’ before they occur. There is no bumpy transition when the dock leveler is in its extended position, the lip acts as a smooth bridge for forklift traffic. Not only smart, also strong, this barrier lip can withstand impact from a 10,000 lb. forklift at four miles per hour. Now that’s safekeeping at its best. Another great solution is a steel or fiberglass impact barrier. A dock impact barrier is a lower impact barrier

bar, generally constructed of 9/16”-thick steel cable inside a flexible fiberglass rail, capable of stopping a 10,000 pound fork lift moving at four miles per hour. These highly visible barriers can also prevent pedestrian traffic from getting too close to the edge of the dock. When it comes to preventing accidents, it is always worth your while to ensure that each loading dock has the proper protection. Wall openings such as dock doorways should be protected as advised in the OSHA regulation 1910.23(b). Remember, a chain doesn’t cut it! 2.) The all too familiar slips, trips and falls. One of the many frustrating things when it comes to slips, trips and falls, is that many times these occurrences are easy to prevent. In 2008 and 2009, 10,000 employees suffered an injury as a result of slipping, tripping or falling in one way or another. One way to increase the probability of accidents caused by slips, trips or falls is slick, wet floors. Add forklift traffic and moving product, and you have quite the recipe for disaster on your hands. Keeping floors dry has got to be a top priority at the loading dock, no matter what the elements suggest you must ensure that your floors are dry and safe for workers. Thankfully, products are readily available to help you achieve this objective. Here are a few product solutions that can be installed at your loading dock to help keep slips at bay. Dock Seals & Shelters are fabric structures mounted on the exterior of the building around the top and sides of the loading dock door opening and are designed to seal out the elements and prevent energy loss. Snow, sleet, rain and condensation build up can prove challenging to prevent, however, by providing an effective barrier against the elements you can keep your dock drier and safer. Some manufacturers have gone as far as creating a rain sealing system specifically designed to keep external moisture out of the loading/unloading area. This system mounts over a dock seal or shelter and literally wipes the water off the top of the trailer as it backs into position with its unique “wiper” pad design.

High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) fans are all about the efficient movement of air to keep employees comfortable in large spaces. The light weight blades of these large fans produce a massive column of air that the flows down toward the floor and outward in all directions before drawing it back vertically toward the blades, creating

what is known as the horizontal floor jet. The floor jet produces improved circulation but also helps minimize floor condensation, keeping areas drier and safer. 3.) Trailer creep. While a moving trailer is a good thing, indicative of demand and a fully functioning supply chain, trailer creep is not. OSHA requires the use of preventative measures such as restraints while using trailers during loading and offloading. The problem you will find is some of the methods used to restrain a vehicle, such as rubber wheel chocks, are just not as effective at preventing a massive semi from moving when it is not supposed to. In the event that a truck should creep away from the dock or prematurely depart from the loading dock, it is possible that the forklift will plunge onto the ground below from the gap created, causing serious -sometimes fatal- accidents. To ensure safety measures are in place at all times, try equipping your dock with reliable powered vehicle restraints equipped with LED communication lights that keep the trailer as tight against the building as possible while clearly communicating the status of the trailer to dock attendants and drivers. Powered Vehicle Restraints: The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulation 29CFR 910.178(k)(1) stipulates that all trucks must be restrained throughout loading and unloading operations. The safest solution is to make the trailer an extension of the facility by effectively anchoring or restraining the trailer in place with a mechanical or powered vehicle restraining system that engages the rear impact guard or the rear wheels of the trailer.

LED communication light systems provide visual confirmation of dock status for dock workers and truck drivers using green/amber/red flashing lights on the interior control panel and on the exterior building wall. These communication lights can make all the difference in preventing trucks from pulling away from the loading dock prematurely and causing a forklift to drive off the dock, resulting in serious injury. Placing a priority on implementing safety measures on the loading dock is important, not only because of the frequency of which dock accidents occur, but also the severity of many of them. Properly Diagnose Your Customer’s Engine Problems By: John Gelsimino Jr. of All Industrial Engine Service

ngine Diagnosis Methods. Several techniques can be used to properly diagnose your customer’s engine problems. This month’s article will cover the engine diagnosis methods including: compression tests (dry & wet) and the leak down test. These tests are straightforward yet provide valuable information useful for diagnosis.

Compression Test This test measures the dynamic pumping pressure of the cylinder when the crankshaft is rotated. This test should be performed when the engine is warm – not cold and not hot. Dry Test – Install the compression gauge into the spark plug hole and crank engine over 5-10 revolutions. For consistency, crank the engine over the same number of revolutions for each cylinder. If one cylinder has a lower reading this indicates the problematic cylinder. The dry test should yield readings within 10% of manufacturer’s specifications. If no compression information is available, use 100 psi as a reference test pressure. However, it does not indicate whether the cylinder or piston rings are the cause. The wet compression test is effective at determining the source of the problem. Wet Test - With the spark plug removed, squirt about one teaspoon of 30-weight motor oil into the spark plug hole. Take a compression reading and observe the difference between the wet and dry tests. • Readings from the wet test should not increase by more than 10 percent, cylinder to cylinder. • If the compression increases with the wet test, the results identify the problem as the piston rings and/or cylinder walls. The theory behind this test is that the oil is providing a wet seal for the rings. If they are not sealing on their own they will when the oil creates a seal and an increase in compression will be observed. • If the compression stays the same, the results point to the valve train. The theory is that when the rings are sealing, the oil will have no effect on compression and therefore the valves are most likely the cause of the problem. Leak Down Test This test pinpoints specific leakage. This test uses a set of pressure gauges with a regulating device and can quantify the percentage of leakage. This is a static test that takes more time to perform compared to a regular compression test. The ignition system should be disabled and/or grounded to prevent shock or fire.

The engine must be at top dead center where both intake and exhaust valves are closed (compression stroke). Before pressurizing the cylinder, be sure that you can prevent the piston from moving in the cylinder (engine from turning over). Pressurize the cylinder through the spark plug hole at around 100115psi. You will be able to measure the percentage of pressure leakage. • Leak from crankcase indicates the piston rings are not sealing or a burnt piston. • Leak from the air intake indicates a bent or burnt intake valve. • Exhaust leaks from the exhaust manifold or muffler indicates a bent or burnt exhaust valve. • Leak from the radiator indicates a leaking gasket or cracked cylinder head or block. • If air is leaking from the companion cylinder it indicates a blown head gasket. Properly functioning cylinders show a cylinder to cylinder leakage of less than 8%. A greater drop should prompt you to investigate further. Each test provides different diagnosis information and takes a different amount of time to perform. By using either method of diagnosis you will be able to provide your customers with accurate information and continue to provide the highest level of quality service available. quipment dealers across North America face more challenges than OEMs realize. Throughout my many years as an executive for a major OEM forklift manufacturer, I have had the opportunity and pleasure to visit dealerships across the globe. All of these visits provided me with the pleasure of having frank, candid discussions with owners, senior managers, middle managers, and the rank and file. These conversations, while not always pleasant, were always enlightening and have made me think about how we structure an OEM’s business model to effectively support and, more importantly, partner with the dealer network to achieve sustainable growth in “their” marketplace. As OEMs, we enjoy the conversations about market share, globalization, strategic planning, and “the next best product innovation”. By and large, it seems, while these are necessary in the grand scheme, not nearly enough focus is placed on supporting and partnering with our dealers. My experience with the dealer-partners has lead to some common themes that ring loud and clear. They say: 1. We know our markets! 2. We know our competition! 3. Quality is a given, price is king, but my profit drives my business! 4. Help me be successful! When OEMs ignore these four points, or take them for granted, we see far too many instances where dealers, trying to please the OEM, will cut their margins down to get equipment in the marketplace. This is done with a plan to earn the market share and gain the service and aftermarket parts business. The result, margins erode. The worse part is the supply chain is weakened each time. As I have begun my role in running XILIN-Americas, we have taken these principles and applied them to our approach with the dealers. There is quite a different approach in how we grow and will continue to grow our business. The premise is a simple one..”The supply chain must continually get stronger”. To accomplish this, we apply some basic principles of our own: 1. End-users should get the best possible value to fit their needs. 2. The dealer is the “face” of our company in their markets. 3. Dealers’ stocking inventory has to be what they can sell effectively. 4. Profit is NOT a dirty word. Every link in the chain has to make a reasonable profit. 5. The end-users need confidence that the dealers and the manufacturer will effectively support the product. 6. We partner with dealers, rely on our collective expertise, and determine the best course of action in expanding our product and service offerings. We have to be honest..... The dealers are the backbone of our industry. As OEMs, we have to provide them with top quality products, best possible pricing, and the best service and support we possibly can. As my company continues its expansion, we are creating partners that are our local market experts. Am I The Only Lazy Slug Out There? By: Mike Marchev

y phone rang last night. The display on the base of the phone read “Unidentified Caller.” I don’t usually answer the phone when I see this displayed … but last evening I did. The person asked for Mike Marchev. I said, “Speaking.” She then attempted to interest me in her Energy Company or Service. Being that it was dinner time, I politely interrupted her in the middle of her script and in a calm voice informed her that, “I am not in the market for a new Energy Company and in fact, you have called before and have told you the same thing.” I then bid her a sincere good-bye and gently hung up the phone. I soon found myself analyzing the situation. What if this woman’s company really was better? What if a new service could actually save me money while supplying a more reliable service? Why didn’t give this salesperson the time to deliver her message? She was probably a very nice, honest, hard-working woman who had nothing but good intentions … and who wanted to earn a living so her kids could eat regularly. What was wrong with me? (Sound like anybody you know?)

The only logical answer I could come up with was that “the devil I knew was better than the devil I did not know.” I did not invent this phrase. It just happens to be true as rain. That and the fact that I must be a lazy slug and an uncaring husband who did not have any interest whatsoever in investigating any potential money saving, service-improving opportunities without them being my idea. Shortly after giving this woman a second thought, I immediately erased her from my mind … until I elected to use her as an example in today’s blog post.

And so it is with you my good friends and fellow sales professionals. You are faced with the same conundrum while regularly experiencing the same outcome. Your prospects simply don’t care, or they are too lazy to think about anything that is not their idea. Change involves work. And nobody (nobody) enjoys taking on additional work until it is absolutely necessary. (This does not make them bad people.) Chances of your force-feeding yourself and your ideas onto unsuspecting “targets” are not good. Dare I even say impossible? Why? It involves work. The secret lies in being visible, reachable and available when your “target” wakes up with buying on their minds. (It must be their idea.) Until then, it is in your best interest to do, say, write and report non-threatening information that gets your “targets” to think about the possible missed opportunities they may be too lazy to recognize. I understand that I have not delivered a concrete solution today to anything. I think I just needed to hear myself think. I truly hope that I am not getting ripped-off by my current power supplier. But until some phone jockey manages to capture my attention long enough to blow in my ear with a few “what-if” scenarios, or until my power suddenly fails me at an inopportune time, I will never know.
