ver the past two years, this column has delved into the realm of Software-as-a-Software (SaaS) technology and how these applications can improve supply chain logistics. From delivery scheduling applications to yard management systems, these online programs can play a huge role in automating and streamlining operational processes, resulting in betterrun and more profitably businesses. Oftentimes, the primary focus of these columns was the actual functionality and features that make these applications so appealing to material handling operations. However, another consideration exists that every facility operator must take into account when selecting a SaaS transportation provider: customer support. A NECESSARY REQUIREMENT One of the key benefits of implementing a SaaS application is ease-of-use. Most, if not all, SaaS applications are accessible from the Internet. This means that no program installations or downloads are required. It also means that your facility’s in-house or contracted IT department does not need to play a role in its implementation (unless a custom integration with existing systems is required). In essence, SaaS can be viewed as a “stand-alone” software application supported by the provider. This characteristic makes provider-supplied customer support a necessity. The provider is who you contact when you’re experiencing technical issues. They’re the ones you reach out to with questions or comments about the system. They’re the ones you message when trying to reconfigure settings or inquiring about billing issues. Any questions about the system are directed at them, not your IT department. However, not all SaaS providers are created equally when it comes to great customer support. And this fact makes due diligence when researching SaaS providers all the more important. CUSTOMER SUPPORT NOT EQUAL AMONG SAAS PROVIDERS While customer support should be a cornerstone of any SaaS provider, this isn’t always the case.
According to a report released by The Enterprise Strategy Group earlier this year, businesses increasingly value the benefits of SaaS applications, but many face significant customer support challenges. Among those highlighted in the survey were slow response times, the lack of dedicated customer support representatives and inconsistent customer communication. Given the pivotal role SaaS can play in your material handling operations, these are issues that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Not being able to reach a live person when technical issues arise or not receiving timely notice of system updates could have a significant impact on your operational processes. With this in mind, facility operators should place customer support high on their ‘must-have’ list when seeking out SaaS providers. WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN SAAS CUSTOMER SUPPORT No business will tell prospective customers they have bad customer support. On the contrary, they’ll tell you they have dynamic customer support. You can either take them for their word or do a little prodding of your own. Here are questions you should ask every SaaS provider before selecting them: 1. Do you offer live customer support? True, live customer support is not as common as it seems. While some questions may not need an immediate response, others certainly do. The ability to immediately reach a customer service representative is paramount to successful operations. Additionally, if you’re company operates around-the-clock or may need assistance at any hour of the day, inquire on the hours live support is available. Established SaaS providers with large national and international client bases typically offer this benefit. Continued on page 32

“Save”ty Yellow Products – Celebrating 10 Years
W
ith every order that leaves “Save”ty Yellow Products, Dan Gentile sends a letter that asks for a rating on the product and delivery, everything from the attitude of the driver to the condition of the packaging on arrival.
The company makes guardrails, overhead door track protection, end of aisle and rack protection, handrails and gates and driveway gates, among other products. It is a broad line, Gentile said. For example, instead of one style of guardrail, “Save”ty offers three.
If the rating is not a 9 or 10 in each category, Gentile asks that he be called personally.
He is always looking for new products, sometimes prompted by a customer need. The most recent is Collision Awareness, for which “Save”ty is the exclusive distributor and which has motion sensors and warnings for both a forklift operator and pedestrian.
“I get two or three calls a year,” said Gentile, the founder, owner and president of “Save”ty Yellow Products. The company, with offices in West Chicago and its factory in Rockford, Ill., makes and sells “safety products to protect employees, facility, products and machinery from impact by forklifts,” its website said. The products prevent injury and damage, Gentile said. The best thing is that the products can save not only money and lost time due to injury, but even lives. “I wanted a feel-good company,” he said.
“I can put guardrails up, but I can’t put a guardrail around a person,” Gentile said. With warehouses larger and forklifts faster, avoiding collisions becomes increasingly important. In the Chicago area, the company installs its products. But they are easy to install, and some buyers do the installation themselves, or have a dealer do it. The company has 55 employees in its plant, five in the office and 18 field reps.
He is a hands-on owner, answering the phone and doing quotes every day. He founded the company in 2003 after working in the industry for 12 years. “Save”ty Yellow is a specialist in safety products, he said, setting it apart from mezzanine companies that make safety products as a sideline. The company sells to distributors. With $250,000 in inventory, products ship quickly. And orders are growing. A new dealer will try out a single product for a job, and then the next time order two or three products after “they see how we do,” he said. Despite the recession, sales were 17 percent ahead of the year before, and he expects further growth. “We see an additional 25 percent growth this year. We actually see that coming in orders for the first quarter,” he said. “Slowly but surely we’re moving across the United States with the distributors we have. The number of distributors grew last year by 21 percent.”

If you prefer speaking to a customer support rep by phone over other methods, be sure to inquire on its availability. This includes whether 24-hour phone support is an option. 3. How do you communicate system updates, new features and other information to clients? No one wants to be kept in the dark when it comes to changes to news about their SaaS system. Reputable SaaS companies will communicate system updates, new features, notices and other pertinent information directly to their clients in a timely manner. Additionally, they’ll send advanced notice of impending updates that may require client action with detailed instructions. 4. Do you provide online resources, such as ‘how-to’ articles and manuals? Not all inquiries warrant a phone call or e-mail message to the customer support department. System-related questions can oftentimes be easily answered by reading a “how to” article or manual. Some SaaS provides maintain an online Knowledge Base that houses these for easy access. Ask what, if any, online resources are offered to clients. 5. Does your enterprise package offer dedicated support contacts?

A
lthough I am not a big fan of television, I found myself channelsurfing last night when I came across The Shark Tank. Hopeful entrepreneurs plead their case in front of four potenial investors in hope of gaining a little interest in the form of “cash” in return for giving up a percentage of ownership.
And so it goes my travel agency brethren and brethrenettes. With so much commonality in your business, you NEED to spend more time and effort in defining your TRUE competitive edge. You NEED to arrive at a positioning statement that makes your audience say, “I get it. I want to work with these guys (guyettes.)
One fellow approached the panel and suggested that his new idea would (could) compete with FedEx. Politely, but with a certain degree of alacrity this fellow was dismissed, sans monetary contribution. He thought he offered something different, but what he was really doing was saying, “Me-too, me-too.”
Play a game. Pretend that you will be a contestant on the show and will soon be seeking funds from interested investors. What would you tell them to capture their attention? What can you say to position you and your company as something different, special, new, refreshing, and one which is worth backing? What could you say to get strangers interested in investing in your company? Think about it.
The send-off phrase that caught my attention, (and made me think of you) was the following: “I don’t see any real differentiation. You don’t have a tightly focused positioning statement that CLEARLY infers that you would be better off if you use me.” I agreed.

A Sweeper’s Friend: “The Side Brush” By: Micheal Creamer
H
ave you ever walked past a sweeper and noticed the side brushes were mashed to the floor and you think to yourself “that doesn’t look
right!”
Well, that’s because it isn’t. I recently had a conversation with a sales representative on this very topic. He was told that the side brush was mashed to the ground because the brush bristles were not strong enough and needed a stiffer bristle side brush. They were using a poly and needed nylon to stand up straight. In our conversation I explained that even a stiffer bristle brush would do this as well, that in fact, the problem is in the adjustments of the side brush. Keep in mind, the task of the side brush is to move the debris in front of the sweeper, whereas the main broom will deposit into the hopper. Of course, the other function of the side broom is to get up close to the edge of the aisle. For the outdoor sweeper, another function of the side brush is to get right up to the gutters. Hence, another name for the brush is a “gutter broom” or “curb broom.” A good side brush has a “wear life” depending on three points: 1. The correct side broom angle adjustment The angle adjustment is controlled with a stop bolt.
This stop bolt is located at the top front of the side broom arm (under the spring). To increase the angle of the side broom, loosen the jam nut and turn the stop bolt counter-clockwise. Be sure to retighten the jam nut back down once the adjustment is made. Adjust this so that half of the bristles are making contact with the surface. 2. The side broom height “wear” adjustment The height of the side broom is adjusted with the use of a stop bolt located at the lower rear of the curb broom arm. As the side broom wears it will be necessary to lower the arm. To lower the side broom loosen the jam nut on the stop bolt. Turn the stop bolt in a counter-clockwise direction. Check the side broom for proper contact and retighten the jam nut. 3. The proper side broom lift cable adjustment This adjustment is made at the cable clevis attached to the side broom assembly. It controls the height of the side broom in the “Raised” position. This adjustment must be made with the hopper fully lowered.
c. Turn the threaded rod in or out to set the side broom in the maximum raised position. d. Secure the cable adjustment by tightening the locknut. e. Remember, when that sweeper is not in use, raise the side broom along with the main broom to maintain the integrity of these brooms. Finally, when the day comes to replace that broom, the bristle should be approximately 3” (7.62 cm) or less. Any longer than that you still have some lift left. The twin-belt turning device represents an alternative to the existing clamp-type turning device.
