Floor Marking Ideas for Warehouses The floor isn’t just for walking on anymore! In warehouses, the floor offers great opportunities for improving visual communications through the use of floor markings. While floor markings have been used for many years, companies are now using them in new and innovative ways that are far more thought out than in the past. When done properly, floor markings can be useful for people at every level of a company. It is important, however, to really think through how floor markings should be used in a facility. If they are applied without a good strategy, they can actually cause more problems than they fix. With this in mind, all facility managers should look at floor marking ideas for warehouses and determine which ones will work best for their needs. What Are Floor Markings? Floor markings are any type of marking that goes on the floor. In warehouses, they are commonly used to improve safety, efficiency, organization, and more. The first step in any good floor marking strategy is learning about the different types of floor markings available and what they are good for. Types of Floor Markings There is a variety of floor marking options to choose from. Each option is generally used in different areas or to accomplish different goals. Knowing all the available options for use in a warehouse is a great place to start for any floor marking strategy. In most cases, a facility will use more than one type of floor marking to accomplish its specific goals. Different types of floor markings are best for use in different areas. Having a properly considered strategy for what to use and where it can help ensure the floor markings will provide the needed results. Floor Marking Tape Floor marking tape is one of the most popular options on the market today. Unlike traditional tape, this type is made using very strong materials such as vinyl and a strong adhesive to hold it to the ground. It can be used in high traffic areas and even run over with vehicles without any problems. Heavy-duty floor marking tape can last for years without having to be replaced. Another thing many companies like about floor marking tape is its affordability. Companies can use this type of floor marking throughout the warehouse without breaking their budget. It is easy to install and can even be removed without much trouble if needed. All these perks have helped make floor marking tape an extremely popular option in warehouses around the world. 8

Many types of floor marking tape are available: • Normal Floor Marking Tape - This tape comes in a large roll that can be applied in straight lines. It can be put down by hand or using an applicator to speed up the process. This is a great option for aisle ways and other long, straight lines. • Floor Marking Shapes – Floor marking shapes come in a variety of types including dots, footprints, and arrows. Having a large circle, for example, can be used to indicate where a trash bin should be placed. Arrows and footprints can direct people during an evacuation or instruct them to travel one way down a particular aisle. • Colored Floor Markings – A tapes color can change its meaning. An aisle with red tape, for example, could indicate the items found there are flammable. There are many ways different colors of floor tape can be used, depending on a warehouse’s needs. • Reflective – Reflective floor marking tape reflects light back at its source. This is a great option for use in areas where indoor vehicles with headlights are used. It can also be used outside at night to improve visibility. • Glow-in-the-Dark Tape – For areas where lights are bright sometimes and dim other times, glow-in-thedark tape is a great option. This tape absorbs light energy while it is bright out and then emits a visible glow when it is dark. This is an excellent option for use during power outages or other potentially dangerous events. Floor Marking Paint Floor marking paint can be applied directly to the floor of a facility. This type of paint has been used in warehouses for years and is often ineffective. It is more time consuming to apply than tape since it needs to dry, and the installation process in general is somewhat more difficult. It can also be difficult to apply when custom shapes or designs are needed. Unlike floor marking tape, floor marking paint can be very costly. One of the common problems with floor marking paint is it chips and peels easily when vehicles ride over it, and then it needs to be reapplied. Floor Marking Lights A technologically advanced type of floor marking actually uses special lighting systems that project the desired marking onto the floor. This is a great option for temporary markings since they can be removed by simply turning off the projector. Floor marking lights are more expensive than tape or

SAFETY CORNER CONTINUED paint, and the ongoing expenses are somewhat higher because the light bulbs in the projector need to be replaced periodically. This type of marking, however, can be projected into any area and is ideal for dark places. Advanced floor marking light systems can be set up to display any image, including words, signs, and shapes. This makes this floor marking method one of the most flexible options available. Many facilities have one or two floor marking light systems to compliment the rest of their permanent floor marking strategy. Floor Markings for Safety One of the most important ways to use floor markings in a warehouse is for improving safety. Floor markings are intended to be highly visible, so they can get people’s attention when other options aren’t effective. Using floor marking arrows, for example, can help ensure that all the indoor vehicle traffic travels in the same direction down an aisle. This can minimize the risk of accidents between vehicles and can also alert pedestrians to the fact that vehicles may be traveling through. Facilities can use different colors or patterns for their floor markings to improve safety as well. As long as the strategy for improving safety using floor markings is well thought out and documented, it can be extremely effective. Even companies that have been using floor markings for years find the safety benefits continue to exist long after employees have gotten used to seeing the markings. People see the markings and somewhat subconsciously understand the safety message. Evacuation Routes One of the most important ways floor markings can be used to improve safety is by identifying evacuation routes. Having floor marking arrows of a specific color always pointing in the direction of the nearest emergency exit can be very helpful. Some facilities even use glow-inthe-dark tape so that if the power goes out during a fire or other emergency, employees will be able to more easily find their way out of the facility. When using floor markings to identify evacuation routes, it is important to ensure that the markings

are easily distinguished from all other floor markings. Whether this is done using specific shapes, colors, or types of markings, choose one option and use it throughout the facility. Floor Markings for Efficiency Improving the efficiency of a facility is extremely important. A warehouse that runs efficiently is more profitable, which is the end goal of any business. When employees waste their time trying to get things done inefficiently, it costs the company money. Floor markings that identify the steps a particular item needs to go through can be helpful. When something enters the facility, it may need to be checked in by the receivables department. This could be marked with a number one on the floor of the area. The next area may label the item with a bar code or RFID tag, and that station can be marked with a two. This process can go on until the item is placed on the shelves or even shipped back out. Using floor markings to make sure all employees know exactly where things are coming from and where they need to go will help avoid wasted time. It can also make it easier for the floor supervisors to ensure employees are always productive and not just walking around looking busy. Floor Markings for Organization All warehouse owners know that using numbered aisle signs can be helpful for identifying where items are stored. Floor markings can really take that concept to the next level. To start with, many facilities will use floor markings to apply the aisle number at each end of an aisle so that it is easily visible. These markings can then be used to place letters or other symbols along each section of the aisle to break it up further and make it easier to locate items. Since the floor markings are applied directly to the floor, they are easy to see while still being completely out of the way. Hanging signs can either be hard to see or get in the way of the upper shelving. Using Floor Markings in Business Strategies There are many business strategies popular in manufacturing and warehouse facilities. Many of the strategies were created by the Toyota Motor Company and have grown or been adapted to use in many other facilities. One of the things many of these strategies have in common is the reliance on visual communication. There are few types of visual communication more effective than floor markings. The following are a few quick floor marking ideas for some of the most common warehouse improvement methodologies: Gemba Walks - Floor markings can help identify the different work areas within the warehouse. Knowing

SAFETY CORNER where to go on a gemba walk can ensure no areas are missed and that the person doing the walks accomplishes what they set out to do. 5S – The 5S methodology is all about improving organization and eliminating all types of waste from the facility. Floor markings can help accomplish this goal in many ways. Reducing wasted time by guiding people to where they need to go and improving safety are just two of the ways floor markings can be used for 5S. Lean – Lean is another effective waste elimination strategy used in warehouses and other facilities. Applying floor markings to identify work areas and provide insights about how to follow established procedures can be very effective. There are many other business improvement strategies out there, and just about all of them can benefit from proper use of floor markings. Any facility thinking of implementing this type of strategy should look at how floor markings can help accomplish those goals. FEATURE STORY

Tips for Equipment Theft Protection

In 2016, the National Equipment Register reported to law enforcement officials that over 11,000 pieces of capital equipment were stolen from various locations in the United States. Of that number, approximately 350 were forklifts. That number alone should get the attention of forklift operations. But we also know that forklifts likely aren’t the only capital equipment that you use. Mowers and riding tractors were the top category (approximately 4,750), and significant numbers of loaders (approximately 2,000), tractors (approximately 1,620), and utility vehicles (approximately 800) were also stolen. You may have these or other types of equipment in your operation, and protecting your investment by establishing security measures is something that all operations can get behind. While we can’t guarantee any one or combination of security measures will ensure equipment theft protection, there are some measures that you might take to help. Equipment Theft Protection: Routinely Inspect Locks and Fences Locks and fences are good first deterrents to help with equipment theft protection. But an equipment theft possibility might increase if your locks and fences fall into disrepair. Develop a security routine that includes a walk of the fenced perimeter on a reoccurring timeline. This will help to make sure you can identify any weaknesses and fix them before they allow criminal access. Equipment Theft Protection: Ensure Recording Equipment Functions Appropriately Any recording equipment such as surveillance cameras you have on the premises should be checked to ensure they have the correct angles. Law enforcement can better 14

Material Handling Network

assist in the aftermath of a theft when views are not obstructed. Also, ensure that your recording equipment isn’t recording over any old footage as a default. You can lose important evidence. Equipment Theft Protection: Protecting Rental Fleets Protecting your property when it’s on your premises is one thing. Protecting a piece of rental equipment once it leaves your premises is another beast entirely. To help prevent the theft of rental equipment, it’s important that you have a detailed rental documentation process. Vet renters appropriately run credit checks that leave paper trails. Make photocopies of I.D’s. And make sure that all of your employees are appropriately trained on these procedures and that they follow the standards every time. Equipment Theft Protection: Register Equipment Databases like the NER allow you to register equipment VIN numbers and identifying characteristics in order to help law enforcement officials track equipment should it be stolen. Organizations like the American Rental Association have partnerships with databases that can help you protect your equipment. While these aren’t the only practices that can help you protect your equipment, and they aren’t a guaranteed deterrent to theft, they might help you secure assets. Getting into contact with local law enforcement to ask for advice and begin a relationship is also key to future protection. BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

Your Most Important Business Success Metric – Customer Loyalty Business is besieged with metrics. Return on Investment (ROI), website visits, website return visits, shopping cart abandonment rates, and average customer spend are all important and well-used metrics to evaluate the success of a business. As with all business problems, everyone agrees that metrics are vitally important. What no one can agree on is which metrics are the most important. Until now. The most important marketing metric is customer loyalty. Customer loyalty is the ongoing instance of a customer that continues to repurchase from a business when they have competitor and substitute offers available. Every morning you go to the same coffee shop which is slightly out of your way when there are several other coffee shops closer to your route. You pass by a tea shop and a doughnut shop, so you can get the same small coffee day after day. On most Fridays, you treat yourself to a scone. On an individual customer basis, the one customer that buys one item a day is practically invisible. Yet, it is the collection of loyal customers that are at a business every day and purchase every instance when they have a need that is the most valuable to a business. This collection of loyal customers is what sustains a business, allows it to grow, allows it to outlast competitors, and allows it to innovate and create new products and services. Customer loyalty works well in Business-2-Consumer (B2C), Business-2-Business (B2B), and in every industry. Customer loyalty is your number one success metric to maintain and to grow. How Many Loyal Customers Do You Have? The first step in growing customer loyalty is to determine what percentage of your customers and what percentage of your revenue comes from loyal customers. You may be able to use data from existing loyalty programs, credit card information, or other data sources to determine the number of loyal customers. Most importantly, your organization, from a small coffee shop to a multi-billion international enterprise, must agree on a definition of a loyal customer. Loyalty could be weekly for a restaurant or gas station or it could be once every three months for an auto dealer service department. The central issue is to have a proven definition of what loyalty is for every employee. Use A Net Promoter Survey (NPS) Of Your Customers. What keeps loyal customers loyal? The Net 16

March 2020

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

Promoter Process (NPS) is one of the simplest and most telling tools for evaluating customer loyalty and helping a business grow loyal customers. The NPS is based upon the question, “Would you recommend this product or service?” The customer can then respond based on a low score (number = 0) or a high score (number = 10) scale. Only a score of a 9 or a 10 makes a customer a Promoter. Customers that have scores from 0 to 6 are Detractors, most likely un-loyal customers. When you subtract the Detractors from the Promoters, you have a Net Promoter Score. NPS surveys should also tell you what Promoters like and what Detractors want to see improved. Innovate & Test to Meet Emerging Loyal Customer Needs. Business results, survey results, industry trends, customer focus groups, and employee ideas are the dataset for creating and innovating ideas to grow more loyal customers and to maintain existing loyal customers. Once you have ideas then start performing small tests to see how your ideas grow loyal customers. Vital to these tests is to have a separate group for evaluation that is not involved in the pilot. These “control groups” are essential to ensure that your test results are directly attributable to your new ideas and not the result of other unintended consequences. Forget long and in-depth product development cycles. Instead, innovate, test, and implement fast. Watch & Respect Your Competitors. As you grow loyal customers, your competitors will be watching, innovating, and acting themselves. The first tool of desperate and motivated competitor is often price decreases, a danger in any business or industry. Think about how to use loyalty programs, special events, unique products, and meaningful rewards to maintain and grow loyalty in the face of competitor activity. When you respect a competitor, you analyze, anticipate, and design around a competitor offering instead of dismissing the competitor with a wave of the hand. Businesses that care about customer loyalty respect their competitors. Adopt a Leadership Style of Humility with A Passion for Customer Experience. The most important aspect of growing customer loyalty is a leadership style that combines humility with a passion for great customer experience. A leadership style of humility represents that you never take customer loyalty for granted. A passion for Customer Experience recognizes that customer loyalty is and always will be an ongoing initiative and never

Five Ways to Reduce Transportation Costs Efficiently in 2020

The turbulent economy has lately made it difficult for field service and transportation businesses to thrive. The industry is morphing into an intricate space, meaning that it has become critical to gain an in-depth understanding of your transportation costs and how you can mitigate the rising expenses to improve your profit margin and keep your head above water. There are many reasons why your transportation logistics costs are skyrocketing. For example, a lack of planning and transparency or bad decision making can lead to increased overall costs, failed delivery or appointment targets, unhappy customers, and ultimately a loss of business. So, what should you do instead to reduce transportation costs? Well, here are five important things you should consider doing. #1 Provide Your Drivers with Well-Optimized Routes A bad route can make all your route planning efforts be in vain and your entire route could be a mess if you’re planning routes using a pen and paper. Poor routes also mean that your drivers will spend more time on the road being stuck in traffic and traveling longer distances which will skyrocket the fuel usage and expenses. When you add the overtime costs of your drivers spending more time than estimated on the road, the transportation costs look even worse. So, instead, ensure you always provide 100% accurate and well-optimized routes to your drivers. You can do this with an advanced technology solution, such as a route planner, which will automate the route planning process and make logistics management seamless. Such software will plan accurate routes while factoring in traffic, weather conditions, sunrise/sunset times, one-ways, avoidance zones, weight and load capacity, and more, within a minute. In this way, your vehicles will never run empty and your drivers will have 28

Material Handling Network

balanced workloads and better routes. They’ll ultimately make more stops without you spending more on fuel. #2 Monitor Your Drivers Planning optimized routes may be the most important step, but it won’t have any impact on your costs if your field reps or drivers don’t follow it. They may make personal stops, idle vehicles for too long, brake frequently, or even accelerate harshly to make up for delayed deliveries or appointments. All such actions will inevitably lead to increased fuel expenses. Bad driving behavior can even lead to excessive fuel usage or cause road mishaps which means that the damage costs will also add up. Therefore, you should track your drivers and vehicles and see what the drivers do on the road. To do this, you can use a GPS tracker to monitor your vehicles in realtime and set up speed alerts to get notified as soon as a driver speeds. A tracker can even help you protect your vehicles from theft. Also, if you go for a route optimization software that comes with GPS tracking, you’ll get the best of both worlds: you’ll be able to plan routes and track the drivers’ progress. #3 Educate and Reward Your Field Reps Drivers and field reps are the most important stakeholders in transportation and you cannot reduce costs without their 100% involvement, even with the best process in place. So, let them know why it is important for the business to save on fuel costs as well as how they can contribute in keeping the expenses down. Then, reward them for fuel-efficient driving which will boost their morale and commitment to saving more. A route optimizer will go a long way in helping you with this. Its reporting and analytics feature will give you the data you need to identify every fuel expenditure which you can then use to provide feedback to your drivers about their performance. #4 Ensure Regular Vehicle Maintenance One vehicle breakdown can jeopardize your entire plan and the downtime costs can vary from $448 to $760 per vehicle per day. Can you afford that? Therefore, you should have a preventive maintenance program in place because regular vehicle inspections and maintenance will prevent breakdowns and keep your vehicles in optimal shape to provide better mileage and save you money. Also, you must change air filters, replace spark plugs, and change the oil and oil filters at regular

FEATURE STORY CONTINUED intervals. Here are six vehicle maintenance tips you should be following. The reporting and analytics feature of a route planner we discussed above will also be useful here. It provides critical data, such as the total distance traveled, total stops, and the fuel used, which will help you identify when vehicles require maintenance. For example, if a vehicle needs maintenance every 2,000 miles, you can easily predict how soon it may need maintenance again. #5 Focus on Reducing Failed Deliveries Every failed delivery will put a dent in your profits. Your drivers may show up on time but it will still be for naught if the customer is unavailable. Such a missed customer will not only jeopardize your other deliveries or appointments but will also cost you more as your drivers need to go to that stop again. One of the best ways to improve first-time delivery success is by allowing your customers to choose their preferred delivery windows. This will ensure that someone will indeed be available at the location when the driver shows up. You can also allow your customers to track their

package delivery statuses or notify them when their packages are nearby. For example, Route4Me offers customer notifications and alerts feature that does just that. It also comes with a customer portal feature that helps customers monitor their own package delivery progress. You can even set access restrictions, depending on how much information you want to reveal regarding the visit, including custom fields, driver identities, and estimated arrival times. So, what’s your strategy for reducing logistics costs? Do you have any other cost savings methods to add? By Route4Me – the nation’s #1 route planning software. Image credit: BraunS/iStockphoto.com
