SAFETY CORNER

Increasing Awareness for Open Dock Door Safety

Warehouse receiving areas are some of the busiest places in a supply chain. Because of the variables involved with receiving such as unknown personnel (truck drivers) in your warehouse, the irregularity of goods received, and changing storage needs after product is received, this area in any operation can be very difficult to standardize. Amidst the controlled chaos of a receiving area, open dock doors that are not actively being used to unload a truck pose particular hazards for forklift operators and pedestrians. A lack of awareness of open dock doors can lead to dangerous situations that were more than likely preventable. Remembering a few important points about dock door safety might help increase safety while also maintaining as much efficiency as possible. Reminders for Dock Door Safety As an Operator, You Might Easily Back Off of One if You’re Not Paying Attention. Even if you don’t see them in front of you, open dock doors are still there. It’s a major disaster if, in the middle of operating a forklift to handle material in the receiving area, an operator backs out an open door. Remember that awareness of what is behind you is key in maintaining dock door safety. Some dock levelers can be upgraded to automatically fold up into a protective barrier to help prevent the possibility of back off. As a Pedestrian, You Might Easily Fall Off of One if Proper Precautions Are Not Taken. OSHA standards require that wall openings with a drop of more than 4 feet must be chained off, roped off, or otherwise blocked off. If this precaution is not taken, distracted pedestrians might walk off open docks, poten8

tially being harmed in the fall and being left vulnerable in a busy receiving area where trucks are moving in and out. While ropes or chains meet the OSHA requirement for block off, heavy duty safety barriers can also be purchased (many times from certified Toyota dealers). As a Pedestrian and Operator, You Might Easily Forget that Trucks Will Eventually Fill the Door. Dock doors are places where product is moved in quickly. Not every worker in an environment will know exactly when a truck will arrive. When working around a dock door, you must remember that semis are going to be pulling into those spaces, and drivers won’t always have the best visibility when backing in. Therefore, it is the responsibility of forklift operators and pedestrians to stand clear when a semi is arriving. Article by Jake Stewart Digital Content Copywriter, Toyota Material Handling, USA

FEATURE STORY

Your Most Important Business Success Metric – Customer Loyalty Business is besieged with metrics. Return on Investment (ROI), website visits, website return visits, shopping cart abandonment rates, and average customer spend are all important and well used metrics to evaluate the success of a business. As with all business problems, everyone agrees that metrics are vitally important. What no one can agree on is which metrics are the most important. Until now. The most important marketing metric is customer loyalty. Customer loyalty is the ongoing instance of a customer that continues to repurchase from a business when they have competitor and substitute offers available. Every morning you go to the same coffee shop which is slightly out of your way when there are several other coffee shops closer to your route. You pass by a tea shop and a doughnut shop, so you can get your same small coffee day after day. On most Friday’s, you treat yourself to a scone. On an individual customer basis, the one customer that

buys one item a day is practically invisible. Yet, it is the collection of loyal customers that are at a business every day and purchase every instance when they have a need that are the most valuable to a business. This collection of loyal customers is what sustains a business, allows it to grow, allows it to outlast competitors, and allows it to innovate and create new products and services. Customer loyalty works well in Business-2-Consumer (B2C), Business-2-Business (B2B), and in every industry. Customer loyalty is your number one success metric to maintain and to grow. How Many Loyal Customers Do You Have. The first step in growing customer loyalty is to determine what percentage of your customers and what percentage of your revenue comes from loyal customers. You may be able to use data from existing loyalty programs, credit card information, or other data sources to determine the number of loyal customers. Most importantly, your organization, from a small coffeeshop to a multi-billion international enterprise, must agree on a definition of a loyal customer. Loyalty could be weekly for a restaurant or gas station or it could be once every three months for an auto dealer service department. The central issue is to have a proven definition of what loyalty is for every employee. Use A Net Promoter Survey (NPS) Of Your Customers. What keeps the loyal customers loyal? The Net Promoter Process (NPS) is one of the simplest and most telling tools of evaluating customer loyalty and helping a business grow loyal customers. The NPS is based upon the question, “Would you recommend this product or service?” The customer can then respond based on a low score (number = 0) or a high score (number = 10) scale. Only a score of a 9 or a 10 makes a customer a Promoter. Customers that have scores from 0 to 6 are Detractors, most likely un-loyal customers. When you subtract the Detractors from the Promoters, you have a Net Promoter Score. NPS surveys should also tell you what Promoters like and what Detractors want to see improved. Innovate & Test to Meet Emerging Loyal Customer Needs. Business results, survey results, industry trends, customer focus groups, and employee ideas are the dataset for creating and innovating ideas to grow more

loyal customers and to maintain existing loyal customers. Once you have ideas then start performing small tests to see how your ideas grow loyal customers. Vital to these tests are to have a separate group for evaluation that are not involved in the pilot. These “control groups” are essential to ensure that your test results are directly attributable to your new ideas and not the result of another unintended consequences. Forget long and indepth product development cycles. Instead, innovate, test, and implement fast. Watch & Respect Your Competitors. As you grow loyal customers, your competitors will be watching, innovating, and acting themselves. The first tool of desperate and motivated competitor is often price decreases, a danger in any business or industry. Think about how to use loyalty programs, special events, unique products, and meaningful rewards to maintain and grow loyalty in the face of competitor activity. When you respect a competitor, you analyze, anticipate, and design around a competitor offering instead of dismissing the competitor with a wave of the hand. Businesses that care about customer loyalty respect their competitors. Adopt a Leadership Style of Humility with A Passion for Customer Experience. The most important aspect of growing customer loyalty is a leadership style that combines humility with a passion for great customer experience. A leadership style of humility represents that you never take customer loyalty for granted. A passion for Customer Experience recognizes that customer loyalty is and always will be an ongoing initiative and never completed. When leadership humility and a passion for Customer Experience come together you get a team that is driven, motivated, and passionate for meeting customer and business needs together. Customer loyalty is how businesses succeed over the long term. A business and customer relationship that is based on humility, respect, innovation, great customer experience, and solid products and services is great for both the business and the customer. Finally, and most importantly, growing customer loyalty is a journey and never a destination so the businesses passion to perform and to improve must be non-stop. The Importance of Battery Maintenance Batteries are an essential component in your forklift and your business. They need to be powerful enough to provide your equipment with enough energy to complete the demands of the workday. If your batteries are not working properly, than neither is your equipment. Proper maintenance of your forklift batteries is an important part of keeping your operation running smoothly. With a little planning and preparation, you can increase the lifespan and effectiveness of your batteries. Keep Your Battery Charged It is important that a forklift battery have enough charge at the start of the shift to meet the demands of your busy workday. In order to accomplish this, it’s important to Remanufactured Transmissions, Engines, Torque Converters, Steer Axles, Overhaul Kits and Aftermarket Parts for: • Material Handling • Construction • Agricultural Equipment

stick to a battery-charging schedule. Batteries have a finite number of charging cycles and if you charge based on convenience instead of sticking to a schedule, you can potentially shorten the battery’s life and usefulness. It’s a good idea to recharge the battery after an eight-hour shift or when the battery is discharged more than 30%. Also, more isn’t always better. If you charge too frequently or when the battery is not more than 30% discharged, you could run the risk of shortening the battery's life. Here are some additional best practices to keep in mind: • Be sure to fully recharge your battery. Don’t stop the charging process mid charge. Cutting a charging cycle short can shorten the life of your battery. • Don’t let a discharged battery sit for too long before you recharge. • Don’t over discharge your battery. If you discharge it beyond 80%, you could do long term damage to the battery and significantly shorten the battery life. • Be aware of the battery’s temperature when charging. Excessive heat will shorten the battery life. Check and Maintain Fluid Levels For optimum performance, it’s recommended to check the fluid levels of your batteries every five charge cycles. To check the fluid levels, open up the battery. Start by checking two or three cells to ensure that there is enough fluid to cover the plastic battery element. If you are unsure, check all of the cells. If there is not enough fluid in the battery, you will need to add water. Typically, water will need to be added every 10 charges. Having the right amount of water in your battery is very important. It’s important not to overfill. Be sure to leave enough space to allow for expansion when the equipment is in use. The type of water you use is also very important. No ordinary tap water will do. Be sure to use distilled water or water that falls between 5 and 7 on the pH scale. Choosing the right battery charger and battery watering system is essential for maintaining a healthy battery. As the leading provider of quality replacement parts and accessories for the material handling and equipment industries, TVH offers a complete line of battery chargers and battery watering solutions for all makes and models to help keep your equipment on the move. Here NORD Grows Again!

Global gear motor manufacturer celebrates its 40th anniversary in the United States with its sixth expansion in Waunakee, Wis. With its headquarters in Waunakee, Wis., NORD Gear Corporation is celebrating its 40th anniversary in the United States this year with its sixth expansion - adding 86,000 square feet of office and manufacturing space. NORD´s main products include gear boxes, motors and frequency inverters as well as industrial gear units. Delivering double-digit sales growth for three consecutive years, NORD Gear Corporation is expanding for the sixth time since it built its North American headquarters in Waunakee, Wis. in 1983. This year, NORD is also celebrating its 40th anniversary in the United States. The global company began U.S. operations in 1979 in nearby Middleton, Wis., sharing a building with Fristam Pumps - a continuing long-time customer. NORD´s newest expansion will add 86,000 square feet of office and manufacturing space. This will help NORD increase the company´s capacity and ensure a continued short lead time delivery. The company currently delivers 22 percent of customer orders same day or next day, and 44 percent within five working days, including custom orders. NORD´s main products include gear boxes, motors and frequency inverters as well as industrial gear units. Expanding its U.S. production capabilities, NORD also added a $6.2 million building expansion and new paint line in Wisconsin last year. Torsten Schultz, NORD´s U.S. President, explained, »We continue to grow, so we almost tripled our capacity with our new paint line. On a daily basis, we currently assemble on average 650 gear units and 300 motors.» He added, »We´re also expanding our facility 16

on Charlotte, NC by 15,000 square feet this year. Schultz said one of the reasons for NORD´s success is its strong engineering support and customer service. The company employs about two dozen engineers that help customers create solutions for their power transmission challenges. »Our top business growth areas are in the warehouse logistics, airports, food and beverage industry, and the grain industry,» he explained. So whether customers are designing new baggage handling systems, conveyors for warehouses, or mixing tanks for food processing, NORD offers engineering support. In Waunakee, NORD employs 325 people. Across the United States, NORD employs nearly 425 people. With our continuing growth, we´re always looking for talented people to join our team.» He concluded, »Come grow with us. We offer a great work environment for customer service, administrative, sales, technical and production people.» Information about NORD and career opportunities are listed on www.nord.com. About NORD DRIVESYSTEMS® With more than 4,000 employees, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS has been developing, producing and selling drive technology for more than 50 years, and is one of the global leaders of full-service providers in the industry. Camso launches new MPT 732 tire

The Camso MPT 732 is the latest addition to the company’s multi-purpose tire line-up, which offers models to match a wide range of challenging applications. Camso is dedication to always improve its product offerings and remain one product cycle ahead of the competition in off-the-road tire and tracks solutions. “Newer tread compounds and features such as void guards, which increase puncture and impact resistance, have improved tire durability and tread life,” explains Lander Nijs, Product Manager Tires, EMEA – Construction, at Camso. “These features come as a result of a recent study we carried out which showed that most off-the-road tires on the market fail prematurely, so customers don’t get their full value.” https://mpt.camso.co/en/ 20
