Preparing Docks for the Spring and Summer Seasons: What to Expect in 2019 The summer is nearly here, and now's a good time to start preparing docks and bays at busy distribution centers for the seasonal changes. In particular, warehouse operators should get ready for two trends that are right around the corner: Summer heat — especially at the docks — and a possible uptick in carrier traffic. Consider how freight moved in spring and early summer last year. Statistics bear out what you may have seen at warehouse docks: shipments rising as we move from winter into spring and summer. The trends of past seasons could give us some clues about what to expect this year. According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics' Transportation Services Index (TSI), for-hire freight shipments climbed by nearly 5 percent between January and June of 2018. Now, this figure alone doesn't perfectly portray what goes on at distribution center docks. It tracks the amount of freight moving within the for-hire transportation industry, but does not include parcel services, private trucking, or the U.S. Postal Service. Meanwhile, the figure does include railroad, inland waterways, pipelines, and air transportation, as well as trucking. To get a clearer picture of what to expect from trucking in particular, let's look at the Truck Tonnage Index, which measures the seasonally adjusted levels of tonnage trucks carry within the U.S. Those numbers tell a similar story. Between January and June of 2018, truck tonnage grew by more than 5 percent. If the trend holds for 2019, it might be time to pick up a Yard Ramp or two to prepare for sudden rushes at the dock. Weather Pattern Changes that Could Affect Warehouse Dock Productivity The boost in freight may coincide with increasing temperatures in some parts of the country, even above the typical summer sizzle. Heat can have a major impact on comfort, morale, and even productivity in the workforce. One study found that worker productivity diminishes on hot days. The researchers estimate that each day that reaches a 8

April 2019

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

WetBulb Globe Temperature of 80.6 degrees (27 degrees Celsius) is associated with a worker output decrease of 4 to 9 percent. And when those temperatures stick around for more than a day at a time, each extra day of heat is associated with an increase of 1 to 2 percent in absenteeism, at least in jobs that don't penalize a few missed days of work. Given that loading and unloading truckloads at the dock can be awfully hot work, even in the best of weather, it'd be helpful to know what to expect as the summer begins. And, as you may have guessed, current estimates suggest there could be more heat than we're used to for most of the U.S. The National Weather Service's' Climate Prediction Center (CPC) projects that Texas, Oklahoma, and other central Southern states will see temperatures of 33 percent higher than normal in May, June, and July 0f 2019. Along the East Coast, and down into Florida, as well as in the Pacific Northwest, temperatures could be as much as 50 percent higher than normal during those months. So, for warehouse operators, especially those in the East, this might be the time to invest in extra high-volume, low-speed fans, additional water stations, and dock-related labor-saving devices like Dockmaster Bin Tippers. Heat and extra freight may be on their way, and preparing docks for these ongoing challenges will help to keep DCs productive, no matter what the season has to offer. CREAMER'S CORNER

Brooms and Brushes = So Let’s Sweep and Scrub The Bristle The bristle, the brush pattern, and the style brush make up the ingredients for the perfect brush - be it for sweeping or scrubbing. So, let’s investigate this theory of mine and see if it works. Making the perfect brush for your machine starts when you purchase your machine. First of all, you need to identify the type of environment you need to clean; ie warehouse, manufacturing, etc. Now you need to determine if it requires sweeping, scrubbing or both. If you choose a sweeper, then the machine requires a main cylindrical broom and side brush. This is predetermined. But if you chose a scrubber or sweeper/scrubber, then the scrub brush style must be chosen. One can choose a cylindrical scrub brush or a rotary (disc) scrub brush. Once you have made your choice, the machine cannot be changed over, so in fact, that is what you’re going to be stuck with. Choose wisely, because this is one of the determining factors whether you have a very good scrubber versus just a good scrubber. Next, choosing the type of bristle is one of the most important decisions. If you have an oily slippery floor due to manufacturing that builds it up quickly, I would suggest an aggressive grit bristle for your brush. There are many different types of bristle that fit many different types of environment. Some of the common types are #1.Nylon #2. Polypropylene #3. Grit – “Scrubbing Only” #3. Proex and Union-Fiber. Let me give you an example definition of one of these bristle types. PROEX : This material is highly efficient as an allpurpose filament for indoor and outdoor sweeping applications , including damp or humid environments. Not recommended for high temperature sweeping applications. Proex is polypropylene and derives its name from the x-shape bristle. A mixture of Proex and Crimped Wire is the most versatile and widely used filament combination. The Pattern The pattern of the brush is just as important as the bristle type you are using to sweep or scrub. One of the 10

April 2019

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

most popular sweeping pattern is 8 double row spiral wrap. Some of the most popular “brush fill patterns” are #1. A “Full Wrap“ Pattern #2 Double Row Spiral Wrap Pattern #3.Patrol Brush Pattern #4. Herringbone Pattern #5. Chevron Pattern and others. So when you are ordering your brush, remember these three things to decide whether you get a good scrub or an outstanding scrub. They are: #1.The Brush Bristle #2.The Brush Pattern #3. Whether you are using a rotary or cylindrical brush. You will be able to chose any brush for any machine using these three questions. Remember, the brush makes or breaks your machine ability. The brush does the cleaning. You can install the perfect brush for the application and your machine will perform perfect, or you can install the wrong application brush and your great machine will not perform. So, what I am finally saying is, that your brush makes-up your machine. A great sweeper or scrubber starts with a great sweeper or scrubber brush. If you need assistance in choosing the right brush application for you, shoot me an e-mail. I will get that right brush to you. It has been a pleasure writing to you today. Equipment Leasing and Finance Industry Confidence Increased Again in March

The Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation (the Foundation) releases the March 2019 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI) today. Designed to collect leadership data, the index reports a qualitative assessment of both the prevailing business conditions and expectations for the future as reported by key executives from the $1 trillion equipment finance sector. Overall, confidence in the equipment finance market increased in March for the second consecutive month to 60.4, up from the February index of 56.7. When asked about the outlook for the future, MCI-EFI survey respondent Harry Kaplun, President, Specialty Finance, Frost Bank, said, “This year will continue to be prosperous as economic indicators are predicting. Business growth is spurred by low interest rates, favorable tax rates and expansion-oriented investment.” March 2019 Survey Results: The overall MCI-EFI is 60.4, an increase from 56.7 in February. • When asked to assess their business conditions over the next four months, 20% of executives responding said they believe business conditions will improve over the next four months, up from 10% in February. 70% of respondents believe business conditions will remain the same over the next four months, a decrease from 83.3% the previous month. 10% believe business 14

The PMMI Foundation Partners with Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs to Support Summer Manufacturing Camps The PMMI Foundation is pleased to support twenty total summer manufacturing camps in 2020 and 2021 with a $100,000 grant to Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs® (NBT), the Foundation of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, Int’l. (FMA). In an effort to narrow the growing skills gap, the PMMI Foundation and NBT are partnering to develop summer camps that educate and inspire the future manufacturing workforce to explore career opportunities in packaging and processing. The grant will support and allow approximately 300 students, ages 12 to 16, to be introduced to the manufacturing process from design through production. “One of the most wide-spread challenges cited by our members is how to address the growing skills gap within the packaging and processing equipment manufacturing industry,” says Jim Pittas, president and CEO, PMMI. “The partnership between the PMMI Foundation and Nuts, Bolts and Thingamajigs is an exciting opportunity to reach and inspire young people to pursue careers in manufacturing.” One or two-week long summer camps have been a successful way of introducing middle and high school students to the fascinating, high-tech career choices available to them in today’s advanced manufacturing industry. Camps allow students to make something with their own hands, sparking their imagination and encouraging them to consider a career in manufacturing. This summer, NBT will support a record number of 133 camps across the U.S. To be eligible for camp grant funding, schools must be able to accommodate at least 12 students at their facility, direct an entrepreneurship camp curriculum, introduce manufacturing processes that allow hands-on experiences to build a take-home project, and provide opportunities to tour local manufacturing plants during the camp. “For most of the kids who attend these camps, it is their first introduction to how things are made and what skills are required for entry into the world of manufacturing,” said Edward Youdell, president and CEO of FMA and NBT. “The associated tours of manufacturing businesses 26

that these campers take part in, help to connect the skills they learn during camp to career opportunities available in their community. We can’t start too early in our effort to attract the best and brightest into manufacturing.” Since 1998, the PMMI Foundation has provided over $2 million in financial support to students studying packaging, food processing, engineering and mechatronics at over 40 partner schools throughout the U.S and Canada. For more information visit pmmi.org/workforcedevelopment/foundation. About PMMI and the PMMI Foundation The PMMI Foundation works to grow awareness of careers in packaging and processing and provide assistance to schools and programs that develop students to excel in the industry. It offers financial support to students studying packaging, food and beverage processing, engineering and mechatronics at partner schools throughout the U.S. and Canada. Since its establishment in 1998, the PMMI Foundation has awarded more than $2 million in academic scholarships and donations. The PMMI Foundation is a part of PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, which represents more than 850 North American manufacturers and suppliers of equipment, components and materials as well as providers of related equipment and services to the packaging and processing industry. About FMA and NBT The Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, International® (FMA) is a professional organization with more than 2,500 members working together to improve the metal processing, forming, and fabricating industry. Founded in 1970, FMA brings metal fabricators and equipment manufacturers together through technology councils, educational programs, networking events, and the FABTECH® trade show. The official publications of FMA include The FABRICATOR®, The Tube & Pipe Journal®, STAMPING Journal®, The WELDER®, The Fabricator® en Español, Canadian Metalworking®, and Canadian Fabricating & Welding. Learn more at fmanet.org. NBT awards scholarships and supports summer camp programs in efforts to engage, nurture and excite individuals of all ages in the pursuit of careers in manufacturing.
