AN ESSENTIAL PART OF YOUR FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM Today’s warehouse fire protection systems include more than just pipes and sprinklers. When the products being stored include highly flammable items such as plastics, aerosols, liquors or oils, fire barriers may be required inside the racking structure. Solid steel rack decking and flat sheet accessories from DACS make effective fire or heat barriers in warehouse environments. They can be used on storage racks horizontally or vertically to block the spread of fire, or to capture heat for in-rack sprinkler activation.

Forklift Field Modifications Dos and Don’ts make the change. If you’re ever unsure if a modification will require approval, make sure to work with your local, authorized Toyota dealer to confirm. They can also assist with ordering and installing new data plates as necessary. Some of the common modifications that require approval per this regulation include: 1. Drilling or cutting into the overhead guard or hood 2. Changing attachments, forks, masts, or tire types 3. Swapping counterweights 4. Modifications that affect visibility

Between scratches, dents, and replaced parts, a forklift can undergo a lot of changes and repairs throughout its lifetime. It’s also common for customers to want to add additional features to a forklift after it arrives. How do you know for sure if the modification is acceptable or how it will ultimately affect your forklift’s safe operation? Here are a few helpful tips based on common misconceptions to help guide you down the right path. ANSI B56.1 Regulations One common misconception is that you don’t need permission to make changes to a forklift. While it’s true that not all modifications require approval, per ANSI B56.1 Section 4.2.1, there are some that do: “Except as provided in para. 4.2.2, no modifications or alterations to a powered industrial truck that may affect the capacity, stability, or safe operation of the truck shall be made without the prior written approval of the original truck manufacturer or its successor thereof. When the truck manufacturer or its successor approves a modification or alteration, appropriate changes shall be made to capacity plates, labels, tags, and operation and maintenance manuals.” To put this paragraph in simpler terms, it is stating that if the modification could affect the truck’s lifting capacity, stability, or safe operation, then you should seek prior written approval from the truck manufacturer to 8

UL Rating Many forklifts conform to or are certified for a certain Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) rating. There are also options available that modify a forklift to meet other UL rating standards so that they can be safely operated in certain types of environments. The UL rating certification verifies that the forklift and its configuration have been approved by UL to comply with these standards. What many people don’t know is that any change to a forklift’s electrical, exhaust, or fuel system (among others) can void the UL rating of the truck. Changes as simple as swapping a wiring harness or installing a new strobe light can actually cause the forklift to no longer meet UL’s set standards. Fortunately, many items can be installed in the field by a Toyota technician without affecting UL classification. If you need to replace an existing part, replacing it with the same manufacturer’s part as instructed by the manufacturer will typically not void the UL rating. For parts being added that aren’t replacing existing ones, it is important that the parts be approved by UL as a field installable option. Manufacturers of approved field installable options for forklifts can be found on UL’s website. These pre-approved parts are specific when it comes to the brand/model of the part and the forklift, so it’s important to pay attention to this prior to making any changes. Just because a part is “UL approved” or “UL listed” does not mean that installing it will not void the UL rating of your forklift. Finally, if a part is being installed or a modification is being made that isn’t pre-approved, UL can send out

a field representative to observe the modification being performed. They may also need to test the truck afterwards to determine if it meets their requirements and, if it passes, they can grant their approval for it to maintain the UL rating. For general UL related questions or to schedule a UL visit, you can contact them on their support line at 877-UL HELPS. When in doubt, it’s best to verify with a professional who is knowledgeable on the subject prior to making any changes to your forklifts. Regardless of the change you are wanting to make, be sure to contact your local, authorized Toyota dealer for professional advice and support throughout the entire process.

CREAMER'S CORNER

Seats: Make that Operator Happy! When I was a younger man, many years ago, I received a call from one of my good customers. He was the plant manager of this large manufacturer facility. He said “Mike, I need some seats. Send me about a dozen. I need them quick. The union threatened to walk out if we don’t put some new seats on some of our equipment.” I said “of course, I just need the models of the equipment you want new seats for." We are going way back, so at that time we would have been talking about a Clark C500-45’s and a Tennant Model 92. I think he had some Yale’s G82C’s as well. But my point here is that sometimes that is what it took to get a new seat on equipment. The union had to threaten to walk out. Of course, the business was good for me because it helped sales. And so, it goes with the age-old question: when do you replace the seat? That’s a question for each individual equipment owner. But I am sure you don’t want to wait for people to walk out. Here is a technique to help outside sales people sell more seats. I always carried a brand new seat in the trunk of my car. If I was making a cold call and felt I wasn’t getting through to the prospect, I would always use the "monthly seat special" as a last ditch effort to get in the door. Many times it worked. I would not only sell the seat I had, but many times I'd sell multiples and had my delivery guy send the rest. Again, what is that saying about us as a people. We let the seat go to hell and don’t replaced it until we are forced. When I was the used equipment manager, it always struck me how bad the seats always were on mostly all equipment. Every once in a while I would see a lift truck or sweeper with a nice seat. I always immediately went over to it knowing that the vehicle was probably taken better care of. So I would always look deeper into the piece of equipment for condition. I would say 80% of the time, little had to be done to get it ready to sell. It usually was in good shape. I am not saying to buy used equipment on this basis, but there is something to it. Within this article, I just gave you three examples of seat conditions on equipment. And it isn’t looking pretty. Why do we wait so long to replace the seat? Do we want to simply get our money’s worth out of a seat? I think not. It maybe that we are just too cheap and want to hold off until the last minute. Or we just let it go until the operator starts to complain about the condition of 10

March 2019

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

the seat. Any way you look at it, seats should be inspected as other parts of equipment are on a regular basis. These operators in an eight-hour shift may sit on the equipment for 7 hours. That is day after day after day. I would think you would want to keep your operators happy. Seats in poor shape are irritating and distract the attention of the operator. You want your operator always focused on the task at hand. And you could even make a case for a safety hazard. So, all of you out there, check your equipment for seat damage. Extreme tears or rips should NOT be allowed. If your seat has more repair tape than original seat covering, replace it. Or, have you ever seen the inside stuffing coming out? That would be extreme, and yes that seat needs replacing. Check not only your Tennant M30 Sweeper/Scrubber, Nilfisk-Advance SW8000 Sweeper, PowerBoss Commander 90 Sweeper/Scrubber, Minuteman SCV28/32 Scrubber or your Karcher B300R Sweeper/Scrubber, but all your other equipment as well. I am talking about your lift trucks, your personal carriers, your Bobcats, your telehandlers and your construction equipment as well as your sweeper/scrubbers. So, make that operator happy! You’ll be glad you did and your operator will thank you. If you have any questions regarding this article, please do not hesitate to e-mail. Thank you as always for reading. Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advice, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/ scrubber. INDUSTRY NEWS

Equipment rental revenue growth continues to outpace economy The latest five-year forecast from the American Rental Association (ARA) calls for equipment and event rental revenues in North America to surpass $61.5 billion in 2019, including $55.8 billion in the United States and $5.7 billion in Canada, up 5.3 percent compared to 2018. Similar steady growth is expected in each of the successive years of the forecast to reach nearly $70.9 billion in revenue by 2022. The current figures, which are updated quarterly, project slightly less growth than what was forecast in October, reflecting different factors that have slightly slowed the projected growth of the U.S. economy. “This remains a strong forecast for a growing industry that continues to expand faster than the overall economy,” says John McClelland, Ph.D., ARA vice president for government affairs and chief economist. In the U.S., equipment and event rental revenue is expected to grow another 4.8 percent in 2020, 5 percent in 2021 and 4.8 percent in 2022 to reach $64.4 billion. Rental penetration — the percentage of total construction equipment in use in the United States that is owned by equipment rental companies — increased to 53.5 percent in 2018, up from 53.0 percent in 2017. “Rental operators are anticipating another good year but have remained disciplined around adding inventory. The effect of better fleet management is that minor fluctuations in the business cycle will not be overly disruptive to the rental industry,” McClelland says. Scott Hazelton, managing director, IHS Markit, the forecasting firm that compiles data and analysis for the ARA Rentalytics subscription service as part of a partnership with ARA, says real gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the U.S. is expected to be 2.5 percent in 2019 compared to 2.9 percent in 2018, resulting in the mild softening of the near-term growth outlook. “The slightly lower increases projected in the new forecast are the result of slightly lower economic expectations. IHS Markit has lowered its GDP outlook marginally for 2019 and 2020, but this is not due to worries about a dramatic decline in the economy, but a recognition that trade policy has had some negative consequences, particularly in the manufacturing sector, and that the stimulus from tax 14

cuts is wearing off for both consumers and businesses,” Hazelton says. “The global economy, with a few exceptions, also continues to slow. Yet, domestic employment gains in the U.S. remain strong and while purchasing manager indexes have retreated, they remain in expansion territory. The outlook still is positive,” he says. In Canada, rental revenue is forecast to grow 4.6 percent in 2019 to total nearly $5.7 billion and then continue to expand with revenue increases of 5.8 percent in 2020, 4.8 percent in 2021, and 2.8 percent in 2022 to total nearly $6.5 billion. About ARA: (www.ARArental.org) The American Rental Association, Moline, Ill., is an international trade association for owners of equipment and event rental businesses and the manufacturers and suppliers of construction/ industrial, general tool and party/event rental equipment. ARA members, which include more than 10,500 rental businesses and more than 1,000 manufacturers and suppliers, are located in every U.S. state, every Canadian province and more than 30 countries worldwide. FEATURE STORY

Are You Ready for ProMat?

In April, Chicago will be home to ProMat 2019, the premier expo for material handling and supply chain professionals in North and South America. As the top movers and shakers in the industry gather in the Windy City, this show is a great opportunity for you to source valuable new ideas, learn about new products and strengthen valuable partnerships. To get the most from your ProMat experience, it’s important to start planning now. With more than 1,000 exhibitors spread across 400,000 square feet of show floor, it can be easy to get overwhelmed with the sheer amount of exhibits to explore. With so many options, it’s important to set clear goals as to what you want to achieve by attending the show. Do you want to learn about new products, meet new vendors or strengthen relationships with companies you already work with? Take some time before the show and think about where you’ll find the most value. Once you set your show goals, the next step is to research the vendors exhibiting at ProMat using the online Exhibitor Directory. First, look for companies you routinely work with to find their booth numbers and if they are introducing any new products. Are there any new products or services you would like to know more about?

16

March 2019

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

You can also search for vendors by industry or product category to help give you an idea of what will be available at the show. Material Handling Network also provides a handy ProMat insert (in this issue) that contains a floor map, complete dealer listings and featured exhibitors at the show. Before you leave for the show, take a look at the show floor map and make note of all of the vendors you want to see. If you’re short on time, be sure to visit the companies that have the most impact on your business first. It’s also a great idea to come up with a list of questions beforehand so you get the most out of your time when speaking with vendors. In addition to the show floor, the ProMat show will also include a variety of learning opportunities including educational seminars, keynote speakers and networking events. With so many to choose from, it’s impossible to go to everything. Be sure to pick the seminars and events that will mean the most to you and your business. The night before the show begins be sure to plan your day. Familiarize yourself with the show floor and make sure you have a copy of the schedule to take with you. You will be doing a lot of walking and standing throughout the day so don’t forget to pack a pair of comfortable shoes. Large tradeshows like ProMat can be overwhelming, but they can also be a great learning and networking opportunity. And not to mention a lot of fun. Take your time and be sure to stop by booth #S5138 to say hi to TVH.

HOW TO

How to Quote Pallet Flow Rack Pallet flow, commonly known as “gravity flow” racking, is a popular FIFO (first in first out) pallet storage system. In a pallet flow system, pallets are placed on wheel tracks or rollers that are set on an inclined rack. A pallet is loaded onto the system from one end and moves at a controlled pace until it reaches the other end. When the front pallet is unloaded from the system, the next pallet moves forward. All of this happens in a single pallet flow “lane,” or wheeled track. Pallet flow systems are well-suited for applications with a high volume of inventory turnover and products that are time-sensitive. The depth of pallet positions varies by pallet flow system, but most hold between two and twenty pallets per lane. Pallet Flow Advantages What makes pallet flow such a popular storage system? One major advantage is that it helps utilize warehouse floor space more efficiently. By storing pallets back-to-back, pallet flow effectively minimizes the need for additional aisles. Also, pallet flow offers a smooth, FIFO inventory rotation. Pallets can be loaded into the back of the system and unloaded from the front at the same time, meaning inventory is always moving and always accessible. Quoting Pallet Flow/Gravity Flow Racking: What You Need to Know Pallet flow systems should meet the needs and specifications of the end user. If you’re the person quoting the system, this often comes down to asking right questions. It may sound obvious, but asking questions is how we come to understand the application, the end user’s goals, and any other relevant information we’ll need when

drafting a quote. Below we’ve listed some of the standard questions we ask when we quote pallet flow systems. This list is by no means exhaustive but is meant as a basic list with which to start and build upon. Standard Questions We Ask our Customers when Quoting Pallet Flow “What will the layout of the system look like? How many pallets deep by how many pallets wide by how many pallets high?” “What will the minimum and maximum pallet weights be? What will the standard pallet dimensions be (depth x width x height) and what will they be after adding in any overhanging product?” The pallet height should always include the load and the pallet. “What type of pallets is the customer using and are they in good condition?” We ask this because there are many different pallet styles. The preferred pallet for a pallet flow rack system is the standard 48” deep x 40” wide GMA (Grocery Manufacturers Association) pallet. “What is the building clear height?” “What type of warehouse environment will this be used in? Freezer, cooler or ambient temperature? Will it be outdoors or in a wet area?” This will tell us if we need to quote galvanized material or standard painted material. Need Help Quoting a Pallet Flow System? At WPRP our goal is to help you, and that includes quoting engineered pallet rack systems. If you’re interested in quoting a pallet rack system for your customers, please contact us at 888-578-1579 and we’ll help you every step of the way.

Improve safety and reduce lost time accidents

Gehl unveils its most compact telescopic handler

The RiderLift™ RML is NOT a VRC (Vertical Reciprocating Conveyor). It introduces an entirely new “RML” (Rideable Material Lift) product category to the material handling industry. VRCs are regulated by the ASME B20.1 Safety Standard for Conveyors and they do not permit riders. Wildeck’s new RiderLift™ RML Type B Material Lift is regulated under the ASME A17.1/CSA B44 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators and allows one rider to accompany their material to the next level. However, it is not a public elevator and can only be operated by authorized personnel. www.wildeck.com

Although compact, the Gehl RS4-14 telescopic handler has a full size operators cab for ultimate comfort. The machine is easy to operate, and the two-speed hydrostatic transmission with gear change on the JSM (Joystick Switch and Move) provides flexibility and precision. The JSM joysticks allows the operator to control all hydraulic and directional functions with one hand, so the other hand can remain on the steering wheel at all times for added safety. A wide selection of attachments are available for maximum versatility, and customers have the option to select the universal skid attach system or Manitou quick attach system. www.manitou-group.com

Tool mover RUD India Chain Pvt Ltd introduces Tool Mover specially designed for turning and tilting of heavy tools. Handling and turning of heavy tools, dies and metal molding tools can be dangerous without the right equipment, causing risk to operators and damage to expensive tools if they are not turned effectively. The Tool-Mover offers many optimal safety features. It turns the load at the center of gravity, which means that the load is turned very smoothly and securely. It is equipped with a frequency-controlled drive that ensures an even and smooth drive from start to finish and it can be securely stopped in any position. www.rudindia.com

New mobile label printer and mobile app Brady announced the launch of a new mobile label printer and mobile label app designed specifically to make it easier and faster to print labels while on the job. New stainless straddle stacker from Interthor

Graphic Products offers valuable and active solutions

The flexible Logitrans stacker range now also lists a stainless straddle stacker. This means that also closed pallets can be handled in environments with severe hygienic requirements. Hygienic, practical, corrosion resistant. “We have had a stainless stacker in our product range for a long time. It is corrosion resistant and is especially designed for areas where the hygiene on the surface is essential, as it is in direct contact with the load”, Gitte Kirkegaard, CEO at Logitrans A/S, says. “With our new stainless straddle stacker also closed pallets, which are often used in the food industry, can be handled without problems!”. www.interthor.com

“Manufacturing and the supply chain have become more entwined,” said Nicole Noble, a product manager at Graphic Products. “Our products are made to simplify processes so production has one less thing to worry about. Facility managers can streamline logistics by using floor marking and labeling as part of 5S, Kanban, and other improvement systems.” Built with intuitive software, DuraLabel industrial labeling systems streamline facility labeling. With lean strategies like 5S, users can produce results on site and on demand. Durable supplies will adhere to tough surfaces in any environment, including cold storage. www.GraphicProducts.com

Protective guarding

New LED worklights with 140” light dispersion

Paul Barlow, CEO at A-Safe Inc., said: “Our philosophy is to put knowledge into customers’ hands to enable them to make informed decisions and take a more holistic approach to protective guarding within their workplaces. There’s more to this marketplace than many realize; what does it mean in real terms if a forklift truck represents a certain tonnage at a specific speed? We’re driving thought leadership about the impact of speed and weight, angle of impact, and the resulting kinetic energy that has to be dissipated by our products in an event. Ultimately it comes down to this: is your guardrail fit for purpose intended? Nobody wants to install a guardrail system that ultimately fails when it’s most needed.” www.asafe.us

Aftermarket communication devices make loading dock safer In keeping with its mission of enhancing industrial safety worldwide, Rite-Hite has now made key elements of its patented Rite-Vu Hazard Recognition System available as retrofit or standalone equipment for any loading dock. Previously, these multisensory safety alerts were only available with specific Rite-Hite products. Specific equipment now available for retrofit includes Approach-Vu, a drive approach visual and audible warning system; Pedestrian-Vu, an interior dock warning system; and Lok-Vu, an external camera that provides employees inside with a real-time view of vehicle restraint/RIG engagement. www.RiteHite.com

TVH in the Americas (TVH), a leading provider of quality replacement parts and accessories for the material handling and industrial equipment industries, has expanded their LED worklight selection to include the SY2X140S and SY3X140S. These worklights feature an impressive 140° light dispersion with spot lights on the front and flood lights on the sides for optimal visibility. These lights are great for a wide variety of applications such as construction machinery, forklifts, mining machinery, building projection lights, outdoor commercial lighting, farm equipment, emergency lighting, 4x4 off-road vehicles and other heavy equipment. www.tvh.com

More than a pallet. More than a dolly. Redefine supply chain efficiency with the ORBIS Pally®. The Pally combines the mobility of a dolly with the functionality of a static pallet to enable new and enhanced material handling capabilities. This unique performance results in greater endto-end supply chain versatility for increased efficiency. When mobile, the Pally quickly converts to static mode with a press of a pedal. When static, the rubber braking stabilizers ensure the Pally withstands lateral force, allowing it to be safely stored, displayed or transported. www.orbispally.com
