SAFETY CORNER

How Data Insight Can Help Avoid Warehouse Injuries and Accidents Ideally, data should to tell you exactly what is going wrong and why. Telematic data can serve this purpose, identifying potential risks and preventative action that can be taken to minimize those risks. About 20,000 workers are injured in forklift accidents each year, and 25 percent of those accidents happen when a forklift overturns. Balance is a huge factor in lift-truck stability, but so is speed. A portion of forklift injuries could be avoided if warehouse speed limits were strictly enforced. But, this is challenging for supervisors juggling multiple tasks and responsibilities, unless there is a warning system in place. Telematic software serves as that warning system in two important ways: • Telematic Optical Location allows speed limits to be set for each type of forklift in the warehouse. If speed is exceeded, an alarm sounds, and an email is sent to the driver’s supervisor. This infraction is also recorded and becomes part of the driver’s operator report card, a compilation of telematic data about each driver’s performance that is accessed through an easy to read report. Remanufactured Transmissions, Engines, Torque Converters, Steer Axles, Overhaul Kits and Aftermarket Parts for: • Material Handling • Construction • Agricultural Equipment

• Operator Report Cards are a valuable data tool when trying to evaluate driver performance and safety over the course of a shift or an extended period. Managers can quickly address risk by determining which operators break the rules, require more training, or need safety reminders. Use data to support safety Safety requires staying one step ahead of potential risks with insight and a leaner approach to the problem. Using the right telematics software provides this insight through: • Maintenance Report Cards provide a history for each vehicle, highlighting severe impacts, whether the truck passed its safety checks, and any repairs that were completed or are scheduled. • Safety Report Cards provide a history and associated KPIs for each operator, highlighting severe impacts, impact warnings, driving activity, severe speed, and restricted area violations. • Detailed Utilization Reports provide a history of utilization, including key information for operators, login duration, travel time, travel miles, and travel with load. • Advanced Location data identifies better warehouse traffic patterns, reduces pedestrian injuries, and facilitates more productive work schedules. Warehouse technology connects all the pieces of your warehouse — drivers, managers, forklifts, pallets, etc. — collecting real-time information that you can use to determine where safety protocol is ignored. Not that long ago, data was a word that made some warehouse managers cringe. But with the latest telematic software advancements, data is no longer a pile of confusing information that takes hours to digest. In fact, with the latest developments in reporting, you can choose exactly what information you wish to see to improve daily operations — including customized reports that determine how to avoid injuries and accidents in your warehouse. CREAMER'S CORNER

What's the Life Expectancy of your Machine? I was having a discussion about sweepers and scrubbers life expectancy with one of my colleagues when low and behold we get a request for parts on a Tennant Model 265. Wow, is this Deja vu or what? So, I thought we need to subjectively discuss this topic. How many machine owners really know how long their machine should last? If you were to ask a group of owners, I would doubt many would know the answer and there isn’t just one answer. Going back to the Tennant Model 265 and a little history. The 265 was developed and made available in 1975. It was a mid-size sweeper with a 42” long main broom and a 13” side broom. So, the way the brooms were situated it swept roughly a 50” path. It had a hopper with a capacity of roughly ½ ton “1,000 pounds”, a good capacity at that time. However, two things made this the popular sweeper for the times: (1) it had a four-cylinder Ford engine which produced more than enough power for this size machine and (2) the machine was fully hydrostatic. Before this machine, Tennant installed two-cylinder engines in their previous sweeper “The model 240”. The engines were made by Wisconsin, Kohler and Briggs & Stratton and very much underpowered. So, the 4-cylinder was a big jump forward. Now, before being fully hydrostatic, the main and side broom were belt driven. The efficiency just wasn’t there, and as you can imagine, I sold a lot of belts. So much so, I knew the part numbers by heart. Looking now, I see this machine being better than many machines of today. It was so simplistic in its design and not the electrical nightmare machines of today. The main and side brooms were level activated as well as the hopper. If the design were to be reintroduced, I have no doubt of its popularity. Of course, I may be a little bias because I grew up with this model. To conclude, this model was marketed between 1975 through 1985. I was very sorry to see it go. So how long will your sweeper or scrubber last? There are many variables. First of all, the sweeper will last longer than a scrubber. It is just common sense. Any time you introduce water and detergents to a machine that has contact to metal, the results aren’t pretty. Over time, a scrubber’s underneath will rust and decay. I should say a sweeper/scrubber will also rust over time. The sweeper general is associated with a dry environment, hence no long-term rusting. But this is just one reason. There are many reasons a sweeper, scrubber or sweeper/ scrubber bites the dust. The number one reason is the lack of proper maintenance. With the purchase of every machine the OEM manufacturer will provide a chart of maintenance to be performed within a scheduled amount of time. You will have a: (1) daily chart; (2) 50 hour maintenance chart; (3) 100 hour chart; (4) 250 hour; (5) 500 hour chart, and so on. These instructions must be followed by the letter of the law. You must be diligent. You must make time to do this even through there 10

are often many other machines also needing your attention. And therein lies the problem. The priority is to take care of your forklifts first because their importance is higher up the rung of the ladder, resulting in the cleaning machines going longer without proper maintenance. Another reason I haven’t discussed is cleaning environment. Again, if you are trying to scrub floors in a foundry, typically an awful dirty environment, your machine is not going to last. If you can get three years life out of a scrubber in a foundry, you are doing good. But on the other hand, you may get 10-12 years out of your scrubber in a relatively clean dry warehouse. And finally, the amount of time you put on a machine directly affects the life of a machine. If the machine is used 100 hours annually vs 500 hours a year, of course the 100-hour machine will last longer as the years go by. So, the true measure of life expectancy is in the number of hours. And if you are going to buy a used machine, I would always want a low hour machine rather than a high hour one. A machine with 400 hours on it is always better than one with 2500 hours. So, to put it in a nut shell, you have three things that effect life expectancy. 1. The Cleaning Environment 2. Proper Maintenance. 3. Overall Hourly Usage. At the end of the day, a reasonable life expectancy should be at least 2,500 hours. I have seen as much as 7,000 hours on a machine. And of course, a sweeper theoretically should last longer than a scrubber, and both last longer than a sweeper/ scrubber. On a sweeper/scrubber there is just a whole lot more to maintain and more potential problems that could arise. The best way to measure life of a machine is to equate hours vs miles. My rule of thumb is “1 hour = 61 miles “So “2,500 hours x 61 = 152,500 miles. That’s pretty good life out of a machine. And getting back to the Tennant Model 265 - the owner just bought it at an auction. It is an original 800-hour machine which came out of a government facility. So, 800 hour equates to 48,800 miles. That’s considered pretty low. I talked to him about this machine and told him it was a good machine. The problem he will find now is that many of the parts are no longer available, such as the hydraulic motors. So, look to have these parts rebuilt in the future when they go bad. It was a workhorse in its day and now being around 35-40 years old, it’s a museum piece. Look at your machine and see how many hours it has. Determine the life of your machine. Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advice, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/ scrubber. TVH HEALTH NUDGE

The Benefits of Donating Blood

Health and wellness often focuses on food or exercise. Expanding the view to wellbeing covers more than the physical body, it includes gratitude and generosity. Some of the greatest joy can be found in giving to others. By giving blood, you can give the gift of life. Only 37 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood and less than 10 percent do annually, which means supply can’t always meet demand. At TVH, our Nudge Program hosts three annual on-site Blood Drives at our Olathe and Grayslake facilities where employees can give the gift of life. Each unit, or one pint, can save up to three lives. In 2018, we collected 222 units thus

equating to over 660 lives. The need for blood is crucial and every day, donors help patients of all ages. About one in seven people entering a hospital need blood. Earlier this year, TVH’s CEO Els Thermote gave birth to twin girls. Upon the delivery of her second daughter a rare medical situation known as placenta accrete was discovered. Placenta accreta is a potentially life-threatening obstetric condition that may cause serious bleeding due to the placentas attachment to the uterus. Els received eleven units of blood and spent a day in ICU. “The thought that my donation could help a co-worker, friend or even a complete stranger is enough incentive for me,” said TVH employee Don Holman about why he donates blood. Don is one of many individuals who donate regularly and is part of a special group called the Gallon Club. Along with the regular donors, there were 25 first time donors in 2018 Blood Drives. First time donor Brad Thompson shared, “I’ve always wanted to donate. When I learned TVH had on-site blood drives as part of the Nudge Program, this provided the perfect opportunity for me to contribute. Hosting annual blood drives is another way TVH shows they truly care and support the community.” In 2017, TVH was recognized by the American Red Cross as a Premier Blood Program Partner, which is based on prior year donations collected and average drive size. Employees are given the opportunity to donate during their workday and the main reason many donate is because they simply want to help others. The comradery among employees during the blood drives is very positive and uplifting. Consider hosting a worksite Blood Drive to bring your organization together for a great cause and help save lives.

High-speed door with washdown capabilities The PVC vinyl curtain of the LiteSpeed Washdown operates on a stainless-steel frame designed without a header and motor shrouds, which are two areas notorious for harboring bacteria. The completely heat-sealed vinyl and optional urethane curtains stand up to caustic cleaning chemicals used in a typical washdown application. The roll-up design translates into a smaller physical footprint and peak operating speeds of 65 inches/second with its powerful, yet quiet, 1 HP motor. The motor is coated to withstand the harshest regular cleanings. A 7-inch LCD touchscreen graphic user interface allows simple trouble shooting at the door opening. www.ritehite.com

A common-sense solution to a widespread safety problem Protect your feet, and reduce liability. On most manual pallet jacks, the back wheels are exposed, presenting a real danger of injury to the feet of operators or bystanders. By encasing the wheels of the manual pallet jack, this patented safety guard minimizes the exposure associated with foot rollover injuries and large debris from its path. Mounting a specially designed collar clamp to the steering mechanism provides improved protection. The FootGuardian® device significantly reduces the number of foot rollover injuries caused by manual pallet jacks. www.footguardian.com

Reinventing Fire Detection in Industrial Warehouses

Advanced fire detection technology detects smoke at the earliest possible stage, while reducing false alarms and maintenance in large industrial warehouses The cost of a fire in a warehouse goes far beyond the loss of the building and goods. The consequential loss caused by downtime, operation interruption, business reputation and goodwill can be significant. Modern goods also tend to have increased flammability, in addition to the presence of large amounts of packing materials such as plastics, cardboard, wooden crates and pallets. There are various possible ignition sources in warehouses including smoking, lighting, electrical equipment and heaters. Although sprinklers are typically installed in warehouses, the lack of an appropriate early warning smoke detection system can not only compromise the safety of the facility but also that of adjacent buildings. Fortunately, protecting life and inventory is much easier for even the largest warehouses as aspirating smoke detection (ASD) technology becomes more widely adopted. The process draws in air samples through durable piping to detectors and

tests it using sophisticated laser-based technology, imaging, and photodiodes. Far from new, the core technology has been used for decades in sensitive applications such as cleanrooms and data centers where early smoke detection is critical. Compared to traditional spot smoke detectors and other technologies, this approach dramatically improves warehouse facility safety by detecting smoke at the earliest possible stage via numerous sampling points, while reducing false alarms and maintenance. Industrial-Sized Smoke Detection Challenges Warehouses come in a wide range of sizes and contain a wider range of goods. Most large warehouses have high ceilings of over 40 ft. (12 m), with some modern automated high rack storage facilities having ceiling heights over 130 ft. (40 m). The problem is that in these conditions any smoke is heavily diluted. This makes detection difficult for conventional detection technologies where smoke must build up to certain levels before the alarm sounds. Furthermore, before sprinklers are triggered, sufficient heat needs to be generated by the fire – by which time, it is well underway. Because of these concerns, traditional spot smoke detectors are usually considered unsuitable for warehouses with high ceilings. The installation, wiring, testing, and maintenance of such spot detectors make them inconvenient and costly. For instance, regularly testing the smoke detectors requires having an inspector introduce smoke into the devices. This requires safely lifting the inspector to the level of the detector on a scissor lift, cherry picker, or other access equipment, which adds to inspection costs. Maintaining and repairing the smoke detectors is similarly costly. The situation is even more challenging in facilities that operate 24/7, where maintenance is only allowed during a planned maintenance period. Linear heat cables and flame detectors are sometimes suggested offered as a solution and might be tempting from a maintenance point of view. However, their detection point (i.e. the flaming stage of fire) is too late to be truly considered as early warning or adequate detection. Optimizing Warehouse Smoke Detection Instead, as an alternative, ASD technology is a more effective, early detection option that does not require physical maintenance to access warehouse ceiling areas above high bay racks.

FEATURE ARTICLE Because of such flexibility, ASD smoke detection accommodates irregular ceiling structures. Moreover, the technology is not affected by forklifts, robotic gantries, and internal business operations. Finally, it can even provide detection within storage racks for the fastest possible response to a fire threat. As an example, one system by Xtralis, draws air samples in a continuous process through holes in long runs of durable industrial pipe mounted along the walls and ceiling. While some ASD products use an LED light source and one or more photo receivers, the VEU utilizes a flair detection chamber that uses a short wavelength laser, a CMOS imager, and multiple photodiodes. Direct imaging of the sampled particles using the CMOS camera allows data regarding its size, color and shape to be derived. Additional data from five photodiodes allows measurement of light scatter in different directions. With more detailed information to analyze, the unit is able to differentiate smoke from other factors that could cause disruptive false alarms. For warehouse environments where airborne dust particles may also be present, which can be confused as smoke by some systems, the unit’s dust rejection and data analytics minimize nuisance alarms by at least 3 times compared to similar technologies. Compared to even other aspirating technologies, the system significantly saves on maintenance costs by allowing long pipe runs up to 1,310 ft. (400 m) and branched pipe networks up to 2,625 ft. (800 m) to extend detector coverage. This reduces the number of detectors required to protect a single fire zone in a warehouse facility. Unique Warehouse Challenges Certain types of warehouses in difficult environments may still require a high level of fire protection, while posing unique challenges to smoke detection systems. Freezers & Refrigerated Storage While most warehouses with freezers or refrigerated storage have some form of automatic doors or plastic barrier curtains to limit warm air ingress, it is inevitable that warm air will enter the room. This often creates condensation within the room, which causes icing on ceiling-mounted equipment and structures close to the entry points. Even though ASD technology is generally accepted as the best solution for refrigerated storage facilities, there are some typical problems associated with its application in such situations. Over time, ASD sampling points and pipe within the sub-zero area can become blocked causing air flow issues and inoperative detection of smoke. In some instances, the only solution is to remove the iced up section of the ASD pipe network and fit a new pipe. To combat this issue, some providers offer a unique sampling 24

www.mhnetwork.com

arrangement that is specifically designed for refrigerated storage facilities. For example, Xtralis enables ASD air sampling pipe to be installed, inspected and maintained outside the refrigerated environment (i.e. within roof space). This makes it less prone to blockage due to icing, easier to inspect, and provides a more robust, longer lasting installation. Dusty Warehouses Certain warehouses are very dusty or highly contaminated environments such that the performance, longevity and maintenance of the detection equipment are a real concern. For these environments, ASD systems exist that are design to withstand the harsh environments in industrial applications, have superior dust filtration and are enclosed in NEMA 4 equivalent enclosures. Another Xtralis system, for example, comes in an International Protection Marking IP66 enclosure that provides total protection against the ingress of dust and strong water jets. The unit also is designed with a patented intelligent filter that significantly reduces the amount of contaminants entering the detector. An integral secondary filter and sub-sampling probe also rejects larger dust particles, which further safeguards against nuisance alarms and extends detector life. Protecting the Warehouse Bottom Line Some managers of warehouse facilities may be inclined to use spot smoke detectors or other traditional devices because of their familiarity with such systems. However, those who take advantage of the superior capabilities of ASD systems will protect lives and inventory to a degree not previously possible in warehouse settings. This level of protection will also prevent serious supply chain disruption as well as liability and litigation in worst case scenarios. For more information, contact Xtralis at 175 Bodwell Street, Avon, MA 02322, call: +1 (619) 252-2015; email: rsandler@ xtralis.com or visit: www.xtralis.com/vea.
