Floor marking for fire extinguishers All facilities require fire extinguishers to be on site, charged and easy to access at all times. They also need to be inspected regularly to ensure they will work should a fire occur. Of all the different rules and regulations that employers need to follow, those related to fire safety in general, and fire extinguishers specifically, are among the best documented. When fire extinguisher safety standards are followed, it can help to minimize the risk of a disastrous fire. Once the location of a fire extinguisher is chosen, it is important to make sure that they are easy to find. This is typically done by using a number of different types of visual communication tools. Wall signs, lights, and other things are very commonly used, but one thing that many people overlook is the use of floor markings for fire extinguishers. Advantages of floor markings Using floor markings for fire extinguishers brings with it many different advantages. Understanding all the benefits is a great way to help decide whether this type of floor markings are the best option in a given facility. The benefits for these markings including the following: • Visible from above - When someone is coming through on a high-low or other vehicle, they will be able to easily see the

floor markings. • Durable - Floor marking signs, including those for fire extinguishers, are made to be very durable, even in high traffic areas. • Easy to install - Installing fire extinguisher floor markings is quick and easy, only requiring a clean surface to complete. • Directional - Facilities often use floor markings with arrows to point toward the fire extinguisher location. This can help guide those who need them to the extinguisher itself. • Affordable - Floor markings signs for fire extinguishers are very affordable, especially when considering how long they last. Facilities can put markings everywhere that they are needed with very little cost. Types of fire extinguisher floor markings There are many options when it comes to floor markings for fire extinguishers. Each of them will have its own purpose, and in virtually every case, multiple different types can be used together. Analyzing several options can illustrate how they can properly be used in a typical facility. Fire extinguisher - Do Not Block Placing this type of floor marking near the extinguisher, with the arrow pointing toward where the extinguisher is mounted, is an excellent way to alert people to its location. The added ‘Do Not Block' text will remind employees or others in the area not to stack inventory or other items in the area so that the fire extinguisher is always accessible. Spanish fire extinguisher floor sign In facilities where there are people who don't speak English as their native language, having this floor sign can be essential. The Spanish language fire extinguisher floor signs can be used on their own, or alongside the English versions to help ensure everyone is able to understand where a fire extinguisher is located at all times. Fire extinguisher floor sign This is a basic fire extinguisher floor sign that sends a clear message about where the extinguisher is located. This can be placed either directly under the extinguisher, or in some other area nearby. The arrow can guide employees, emergency responders, or others directly to the extinguisher so that they can respond to a fire should one occur. Other marking options There are other floor marking options that a company can consider as well. Some companies will use stencils and floor marking paint in order to convey the necessary message. This does give some additional flexibility on exactly what the floor markings say. Of course, good floor markings signs can also be customized to meet the needs of any situation. No matter what type of floor marking is used, the most important thing is to ensure the markings convey a very clear

message. No markings should increase confusion by making people think that the sign is leading them to a fire exit, for example. Having a well-thought out floor marking strategy for everything in the facility is critical, especially when working to incorporate new markings such as those for fire extinguishers. Proper markings are required Whether a facility uses wall signs, floor markings, or other visiual communications options, it is important to remember that it is necessary to use some type of signage. OSHA requires that facilities make fire extinguishers visible and easy to access at all times. Signs hanging up throughout the facility can help to further ensure the company is in line with the OSHA regulations at all times. OSHA is regularly looking into fire safety issues, and issuing regulations on how a facility should be labeling their fire safety equipment, including extinguishers. All safety managers and others working for a facility need to make sure to keep up to date with the latest news and information from OSHA and other regulatory bodies to avoid getting any type of penalty or citation that could cause significant issues. Updating markings when extinguishers Move Facilities sometimes have to rearrange machinery or other items to improve workflow, or for other reasons. When this happens, it may become necessary to move a fire extinguisher as well. If this is done, it needs to be a priority to add new floor markings that will direct people to the new location of the fire extinguisher. Ideally, this should be done at the same time that the extinguisher was moved so that there is no point where the people in the facility wouldn't be able to find it if needed. Equally important is going to be removing the old floor markings that are now pointing toward an area that doesn't actually have a fire extinguisher (if applicable). Using heavy duty floor scrapers, it is possible to have even larger floor marking signs removed quickly. Removing old markings is essential because of the fact that they could lead people into danger. If someone follows an old sign expecting a fire extinguisher, and one is not there, they could get seriously injured. This would also prevent or delay them from being able to put a fire out, which puts the entire facility at risk. Cleaning fire extinguisher floor markings Once any type of floor marking is put in place, it needs to be properly maintained at all times. This means keeping it cleaned so that the sign is visible, and easily legible to everyone in the area. Facilities that purchase heavy duty floor markings will find that they are able to clean them using most any common floor cleaning products that are used in the facility. The maintenance team can use mops or even large floor cleaning equipment and go right over the floor markings to keep them clean. This will remove grease, dust, and other debris that could otherwise obstruct the view of the sign for those in the area. Training As with any type of safety effort in a facility, training must

be a key component. While fire extinguisher floor markings are typically self-explanatory, it is still a good idea to provide information to employees about what each one means. This can be done in any normal safety training class that the facility provides. Some companies also put up ‘keys' that display what different symbols mean, which can provide good reminders to employees about what everything means in regards to the floor markings throughout the facility. BUSINESS PROFILE

Combilift sets benchmark for mass customization with new production plant Combilift has set the benchmark for mass production of customized innovative products according to Martin McVicar, managing director. Mr. McVicar was speaking at the official opening of the new Combilift global headquarters. Built at a cost of €50 million the new 500,000 sq.ft (46,500 sq. m) global headquarters and new manufacturing facility will allow Combilift to double production. Established in 1998, Combilift currently exports 98% of its products to 85 countries through its 250-strong international dealer network. Combilift is celebrating its 20th year anniversary of lifting innovation. Mass customization McVicar attributes the company’s impressive growth to mass customization. “Mass customization is the new frontier for both the customer and the manufacturer. Increasingly customers are expecting products to be tailored to meet their needs. Forklift producers that offer customized products generally produce low volume, but Combilift is setting the benchmark by offering the mass production of tailored products, resulting in a strategic advantage for our customers. Traditional forklift manufacturers focus on high volume mass production of the same products. We evolve with our clients, producing new products each year.” Since 1998 Combilift has been manufacturing customized products tailored to suit client requirements. “The flexibility in our new facility means that Combilift can continue to accommodate any customer request for a customized material handling solution,” says McVicar “Customer requirements are our standard. The new factory enables us to double production and remain focused on the needs of our customers and dealers. We have become much more than a forklift manufacturer and are transforming the transport and logistics sector with our innovative, space-spacing products.” Combilift offers a free logistic and warehouse design service. Combi-Connect allows the customer to see the benefit a Combilift product will bring to their business. “Our engineers proactively design, plan and produce solutions in collaboration with our customers by offering material flow analysis and 3D animations. We work with customers to produce warehouse designs to visualise the capacity potential as well as the optimum flow of materials on their site.” says McVicar. The Combilift approach is one of listening to its global network of customers. “We work closely with our customers and dealers to identify solutions that best match their individual specific needs. Combilift invests 7% of its annual turnover (revenue) in Research and Development (R & D) to enhance its customization capability. We are intensifying the collaboration with our customers in the warehouse and material handling 10

sectors. The intention is to maximize return on revenue (ROI).” Growth of Combilift Established by Martin McVicar and Robert Moffett, technical director, in 1998, Combilift is a privately held and fully capitalized company. It developed the world’s first multidirectional all-wheel drive IC engine powered forklift in 1998. In its first year of operation, Combilift produced 18 units, 17 of which were exported. The company has more than doubled in the last five years and now has 40,000 units in operation in over 85 countries. Combilift’s product portfolio has expanded way beyond its first multidirectional Combilift, with innovative product development and customization being a cornerstone of the company’s ethos according to McVicar. “As a company, Combilift has always focused on a number of niche market segments and has a proven track record of launching one to two new products annually. In the first 10 years Combilift concentrated on the long load material handling sector. The Combilift multi-directional forklift revolutionized the handling of long materials as it allowed customers to handle long products in less space more safely. Between 2008 and 2018 Combilift diversified its product ranged by developing a number of innovative space saving warehouse and heavy load handling products; the Aisle Master articulated truck and the Straddle Carrier (Combi-SC) respectively. Combilift entered the pedestrian forklift market with the introduction a number of unique products (Combi-WR and Combi-CS) in the last five years, which benefit from its patented multi-positional operator tiller arm technology. Combilift sees a growing demand for pedestrian trucks, driven by safety concerns where customers and/or employees are in the vicinity of operating forklifts according to McVicar. “It is Combilift’s intention to significantly expand its pedestrian forklift range as can be seen with the launch of the high lift capacity Combilift Powered Pallet Truck (Combi-PPT).” Increase in jobs Combilift is also investing in its workforce, adding a considerable number of high-level employment opportunities, for skilled technicians, design engineers, logistics and supply chain specialists and those with mechanical and electrical mechatronics skills. “The investment in people will enable Combilift to meet its ambitious growth plans,” says McVicar. We have employed an additional 230 people since we announced our plans for this factory in 2015. The combination of this state of the art production plant and a skilled workforce will allow us to double production within the next five years.”

New factory The new 500,000 sq.ft (46,500 sq. m) purpose–built factory is set on a 100-acre site with room for expansion. With 11 acres of roof space, it is one of the largest manufacturing operations under one single roof in the Republic of Ireland. Incorporating the latest manufacturing processes with a focus on sustainability, the new factory will enable Combilift to double its output in a single shift across all production lines. Four 90 meter moving assembly lines produce a finished truck every 15 minutes. 30% of its roof space is covered in skylights enabling staff to work in natural daylight without the assistance of artificial lighting. Lighting is provided through 1100 LED light with individual PIR sensors. Solar panels supply 185 kW of energy with a 1 MW Biomass plant fueled by recycled wood (pallets etc.) to heat the spraying boots and assembly area. 110,000 liters of rain water is harvested for use throughout the facility. More than 50 truckloads of finished products are dispatched to 85 countries each week. Spare parts are also shipped across the world from Monaghan to the dealer network. Certified to international quality and safety management standards, the new headquarters and manufacturing facility has been awarded ISO 9001 international quality management system, ISO 14001 Environment Management and OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series.

CREAMER'S CORNER

Welcome to my nightmare CONFIDENCE is what you are looking for in a supplier when parts are ordered for your machine. So when you have that Tennant 5700XP scrubber and new brushes are needed, you want a company that knows what to ask to get you the correct brushes. A little background in the Tennant 5700XP is that it is a walk-behind scrubber. This machine was available in three sizes - 28”/700mm, 32”/800mm and the 36”/900mm scrub path width. As well as the different widths, there are two types of brushes - rotary or cylindrical. One cannot replace the other. In this example, brushes were ordered by material and left at that. There were no questions by the vendor other than customer number and purchase order number. When the tech went to install the brushes, they were not only the wrong size, but they were cylindrical. “Not even close” was the response the general manager got when asked the problem. We need rotary brushes for a 32” machine. I need this machine up and running today! Welcome to my nightmare! When this company called us, the conversation went like this. “Okay, you have a Tennant 5700XP scrubber. What is the width of the machine? Is it the 700mm, 800mm or 900mm machine?” In a professional manner, his problem was address and corrected. He had his parts the next day. KNOWLEDGE is another attribute one is looking for when dealing with a vendor. When you have that Nilfisk – Advance Model CS7000 and need squeegees, you want parts people with the ability to recognize the information needed to make that purchase successful. When ordering you say I need the inside and outside squeegee blades for my machine, but don’t have the part number. If you are calling a fly-by-night company, anticipate a problem. So, be careful. The internet is full of these guys. Well, you received the order. So far so good. The squeegees are the inside and outside but are for the side frame, not the rear squeegee frame. This example was at a rental house that the machine was going to be rented that day. Welcome to my nightmare! When I got that call, the first thing I asked “you are talking about the rear squeegees aren’t you?” The lesson here is to be proactive with your vendor. Invite questions by your vendor. Give precise answers, not half answers. FORSIGHT to see a potential problem when your ordering parts and supplies is another attribute you are wanting in a good vendor. A gentleman called in asking questions about our company. The questions were general and what you would expect from someone looking for a new supplier. What kind of parts do you supply? For which machines? What are the warranties? And so forth. And then he said “Do you supply brushes for a Tennant 515E Scrubber?” I replied “Yes, of course” and then I asked him “Does your 515E have two brush or three brush arrangement? He quickly replied “three brush” and then continued, “How did you know to ask that?” Well, we have 12

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

forsight. And then he said, “that happened to me. We ordered brushes for my 515E and the company just shipped me two brushes (which were the wrong size) and created a terrible situation for me. I was having guests at my factory and had to have it cleaned. I had to rent a machine because the brushes were wrong. So much for saving money. Welcome to my nightmare! And then I explained that when the Tennant 515E was built, Tennant offered two setups - two – 20” rotary brushes or three – 16” rotary brushes. Your supplier has to step up and give you the facts. In closing, you must have confidence in your supplier that he/she will supply the correct parts or supplies and of course at the best price. But price is not everything. Time also costs money so keep that in mind. Your vendor must also have the knowledge and foresight to what your needs are. Next time you communicate with your vendor, ask questions. To keep them honest, ask questions to which you already know the answer. See what their response is. Thanks for reading. I appreciate it. The EHS profession continues to grow. Managers can use this easy-to-download guide to jump-start their facility’s safety program or re-establish professional goals with quality results in several ways. www.graphicproducts.com

Binder USA offers LED lights constructed with stainless steel for a durable shell that is IP69K rated when mated to a binder molded connector. A 120-degree angle of illumination is provided and 50,000 hours of reliable lighting ensures dependable results from the binder LED light bar. For simple and flexible installation, binder provides mounting brackets and power supplies. Power supplies can be hardwired with an inline power converter, or operators can use an optional 24V AC power converter overmolded to a binder M12 connector. www.binder-connector.us

Pop-up skate wheel system improves 90-degree conveyor transfers Omtec® Corporation introduced a new line of pop up skate wheels designed to move softer materials and pallets more precisely than standard pop-up ball or fixed ball transfer systems. Offering larger surface and point loading areas than pop-up ball or fixed ball systems, Omtec’s pneumatic skate wheel systems give operators more control of conveyed products. Such improved linear control lets operators move products accurately with one hand, particularly from one conveyor to another, without concern for drift. Providing the freedom to create work cells without the need for installing roller conveyors, the patent-pending Omtec skate wheel system offers cost advantages as well as ergonomic benefits. www.omtec.com

TVH HEALTH NUDGE

The POWER of habit We form our habits by our choices, which when repeated, develop into a lifestyle and shape who we are. What are your habits? Do you eat the same thing for lunch, go through the same exercise routine, and fall into bed at the same time each night? Or maybe you’ve made a habit out of eating something sweet before bed, avoiding the gym and staying up as late as possible. At TVH, our Nudge Program has a DCM mantra, DCM = Daily Choices Matter. The mantra reminder is placed on all Nudge information and employees are offered wristbands to wear daily as encouragement. Although there are many components to wellness, let’s focus on the two habits that are vital to your well-being: diet and exercise habits. Here’s how to adopt a habit: Decide on the ONE habit that you would like to develop. It’s tempting to pick up three or four healthy habits but choosing just one new habit is realistic and doable. Here are some healthy habit ideas: • Do not eat after 7pm each night. • Bring your lunch to work instead of eating fast food. • Exercise four times a week either before or after work for 30 minutes each time. • Only eat fruits and veggies as your afternoon snack. • Schedule daily stretch and walking breaks every day. Write your new habit down on paper. Include your “why” for developing this new habit, the obstacles you’ll face and your strategies for overcoming these obstacles. For example: • My new habit is to stretch every day to one song. A typical song is 3 to 4 minutes and by doing this daily for 365 days, you will have stretched for 24 hours each year! • My main motivation (my why) is to increase my energy which will improve my overall quality of life physically, psychologically and emotionally as well as my relationships. • The obstacles I will face are lack of focus and commitment to this new daily routine. • I will overcome these obstacles by 1) prioritizing “me” time 2) utilizing this time to clear my mind and declutter busyness which leaves me feeling exhausted and drained and 3) create accountability by tracking my commitment on my schedule and encouraging others to participate with me on a 30-day challenge together. 22

Commit fully to your new habit, in a public way. This could mean posting it on social media, or sharing with friends or co-workers. Be empowered and share your transformation brought about by the new habit. Keep track of your progress. You could keep a detailed journal or simply make a check mark on each calendar day for your new habit. Once your new habit becomes second nature, usually in about 30 days, feel free to add a second habit by going through the same steps. Five habits that sabotage your efforts for good health: 1. Not prioritizing sleep. Sleep experts agree the amount of sleep varies from person to person, but 7 to 8 hours are the recommended guidelines for adults. 2. Sweet deception. Sugar is highly addictive and is the culprit for many health issues and weight gain. Aim to reduce your sugar intake. 3. Stress is inevitable; how you react to it is what matters. Fifteen seconds of deep breathing is a simple anti-stress remedy. 4. Limiting your focus. Rather than seeing workouts as only a means to lose weight. Reframe your perspective: workout because you love your body, not because you hate it. 5. Burning the candle at both ends without any downtime. Constant motion and scheduling leads to burnout and exhaustion. Make time to just “be.” If you would like to know more about the TVH Nudge Health and Wellness programs, contact Lucy DelSarto, Health & Wellness Coach for TVH Americas. SUPERIOR ROLL HANDLER This modification allows the customer to handle large diameter reels or rolls without the fear of the unit rolling or damaging the product.

Modifications made to the truck include widening the forks to accept the roll or reel, adding the angles to the fork to cradle the load perfectly and reinforcing the linkage, battery compartment and the overall construction of the pallet truck.
