Tech Talk What’s that engine noise? Have you ever had an engine with a noise that you just couldn’t diagnose? Different engine designs have different characteristics that can cause an engine noise that is not necessarily an indication of a pending failure. The following is a quick guide that will cover the majority of engine noises and their causes.

Knock occurring at half engine RPM or camshaft speed: Hydraulic valve lifters are a common source of engine noise. New lifters may take a few minutes to pump up with oil and will be noisy until they are pressurized. A bad lifter can stick or simply be defective from the manufacturer. A faulty lifter can be isolated by listening to each rocker pivot point with a stethoscope while the engine is at idle. Also, a similar noise can occur if you have a damaged valve spring, pushrod, rocker arm or even excess valve lash. Even mechanical fuel pumps can make a similar noise at valve train speed.

Deep metallic knock: This noise is caused by excessive main bearing clearance. The noise is most audible when the engine is under load, accelerating or when it is just started. Low oil pressure always accompanies excess main bearing clearance because naturally as clearance increases oil pressure decreases. This noise must be addressed quickly because failure to address the issue early can result in a spun main bearing. If this occurs the engine block will need to be align bored and this is an additional charge at any engine remanufacturer.

If crankshaft endplay is beyond the factory specifications this is the noise you will hear. This can be diagnosed by placing a dial indicator at either end of the crankshaft. Carefully pry the crankshaft from one side to another recording the total limits of travel. It’s as simple as comparing that number to the factory specification and if it exceeds then there is a problem with the thrust of the crankshaft. Metallic rap when the engine is running under a light load: This is caused by excessive connecting rod clearance. The noise will become louder and will increase in frequency as the engine speed increases. You can isolate the defective connecting rod bearing by removing spark from one cylinder at a time. When spark is removed from the defective cylinder the metallic rapping will noticeably decrease. The combustion is what thrusts the piston and rod downward causing this engine noise.

Dull metallic rattle heard at idle and under light engine load: Piston slap is the noise associated with excess piston-to-cylinder wall clearance. On some engines the noise can disappear when the piston expands during warm-up. In this case the noise will not affect the engine’s reliability. However, if the slap remains after warm-up, piston or ring failures are possible. In this case, grounding a spark plug will not affect the noise.

This type of noise is caused by excessive piston pin clearance. Similar to excessive rod clearance noisy piston pins are isolated by grounding spark plugs. However, the affect is different than too much rod clearance. Noise from a loose piston pin will actually increase in frequency with the spark grounded. This noise typically occurs after piston rings are replaced due to the additional drag on the loose pin. While these are some of the most common noise sources, remember that noises can come from areas other than internal engine parts. Drive belts, alternators, compressors, air pumps, and fuel pumps all make noise. This is why it is good practice to first disconnect the accessories and run the engine to determine if the noise disappears. To prevent overheating be sure to only run the engine for a short period of time. Material covered in this article came from various engine manuals and handbooks. All Industrial Engine Service is not responsible for any damage or failure caused by the techniques mentioned in this article. Creamers Corner Sweeper VS. Scrubber VS. Sweeper-Scrubber It’s Sweeper vs. Scrubber vs. Sweeper-Scrubber. For cleaner contractors it can be a problem and very confusing. If not tough altogether, it can be a very costly error. For cleaner contractors that maintain facilities indoors, as well as outdoors, some would agree that a multi-task machine would make the most sense, while others would disagree with that assessment and insist on a single function machine. As for me, I think every situation is somewhat different from each other and to bunch all situations would be a mistake. So, let’s say you are a contractor who offers services to clean many different surfaces, such as the following: #1. Food Warehouse #2. Maintain Small City Streets #3. Shopping Mall In this example, the Food Warehouse has to be scrubbed so that is a no brainer. A rider scrubber is to be used for the environment. For sweeping the street, some people may want to use a sweeper-scrubber. This would not be practical as far as scrubbing. I would use strictly a sweeper. Depending on the size of the city, one could use a large industrial sweeper such as a Tennant 800 Sweeper. If you were a contractor that strictly cleans city streets, a large street sweeper may be your choice, but if you are diverse, the Tennant sweeper should suffice.

This leads me into the shopping mall. The parking areas, the Tennant should be fine as well. The indoors a small rider scrubber should be fine as well. The sweeper-scrubber in all these instances in my mind is not necessary. A sweeper-scrubber could be used in a large warehouse, airplane hangars and auto manufacturers. One environment I would never recommend a sweeper-scrubber is a paper mill, paper printer. I rented a sweeper-scrubber to such a place. The operator, not being familiar with the equipment, left the solution valve on after use. He then walked away. The cleaning solution ran all over the floor. The large paper rolls being about 5 feet in diameter and 4 feet tall absorbed this liquid like a sponge. I immediately received a call to remove this machine. It had ruined two rolls. From my understanding, it cost approximately $5,000.00 per roll. From that point on, they rented only sweepers. So, if you have a situation that you are not sure about, perhaps I could help figure out what’s best for you. As usual, thank you for reading Creamers Corner. Industry News Vanderlande wins 100th site-based service contract Vanderlande has been awarded its 100th sitebased service contract following an agreement with the Airlines Committee of Hawaii, Inc. (ACH). The threeyear contract started on March 1, 2015 and involves a site-based team of more than 50 employees. They will provide operations and maintenance for all inbound/outbound baggage handling at Honolulu International Airport and Kahului Airport. The team will also be responsible for all maintenance of the inbound systems at Lihue Airport, Kona International Airport and Hilo International Airport. Vanderlande was one of six potential bidders in the comprehensive and highly competitive procurement process with the ACH, which included blind scoring. Following this recent win, which reflects the company’s growth in services, Vanderlande now has 100 site-based service teams worldwide. The order intake for services will amount to a new record of 250 million euros in the current financial year, which ends on March 31, 2015. Over the last few years, Vanderlande has experienced a consistent growth in services sales of around 15% per year. To celebrate its 100th site-based service contract, an official ceremony was held in Hawaii. A commemorative plaque showing a map of the world was presented to ACH Co-Chairperson Matt Shelby by Tjarko Bouman, Director Services Development at Vanderlande. “The ACH recently took responsibility for the operation and maintenance of baggage handling systems at certain major airports within the Hawaii airport system,” said Mr. Shelby. “We knew of Vanderlande’s excellent global reputation within the market and we needed an industry leader to work closely with us for this imp ortant project. Although the procurement process was highly competitive with compelling proposals from multiple bidders, we are confident that we have found a real partner that can bring the operations and maintenance of the baggage handling system to a whole new level. The collaboration Vanderlande has shown on virtually every aspect of this start-up has been excellent and we are convinced that Vanderlande is the right partner for us.” Mr. Bouman commented: “We are very happy with our 100th site-based service contract, which we consider an important milestone in our services growth over the last few years. Our services for the ACH baggage handling systems will ensure high performance, and further improvement with the implementation of innovative service solutions such as EYE4U and Maximo® EAM. We look forward to working with the ACH to help them ensure the success of their business.”

Industry News Consolidating frozen storage to optimize growth and logistics Drive-in rack helps Coloma Frozen Foods expand, cut cost, and improve safety. Coloma Frozen Foods needed to consolidate its frozen storage capacity. As a food industry provider of quality frozen fruits, vegetables, juices, and cherry juice concentrates, the company had previously outsourced or leased its frozen storage to four commercial facilities spread out over a 20-mile radius in southwest Michigan. “Transferring product between four inter-company locations for production, frozen storage, and repacking was costly and inefficient,” says Brad Wendzel, President of Coloma Frozen Foods. “One of the leased freezer facilities had aged beyond its useful life, and much of the racking was too low, requiring inefficient pallet unstacking and restacking before shipping.” To optimize its growth and logistics, Coloma Frozen Foods chose to build 90,000 sq. ft. of new freezer space, including 75,000 sq. ft. of racked freezer space in a new centralized campus facility. Looking to maximize frozen storage efficiency and repacking capability, Wendzel turned to Southwest Docking and Handling, a material handling and automated systems distributor, and Steel King Industries, a storage system and pallet rack manufacturer. The companies suggested drive-in rack for its cost-effective, high-density storage capacity that requires fewer aisles and provides better cube utilization than selective rack. Drive-in rack enables storing up to 75% more pallets than selective racking and is ideal for high-traffic and cooler/freezer installations.

“We expect to save about $150,000 to $200,000 a year in reduced labor, management, transportation, energy, and maintenance costs using the drive-in rack at our campus facility,” says Wendzel. “Our growth potential is substantial, and we expect ROI in under two years.” With drive-in rack, forklifts drive directly into the rack to allow storage of two or more pallets deep. But because forklifts drive directly into the rack, they tend to take more abuse than other rack structures. “In freezer applications, the rack is susceptible to forklift impact because reaction time is slower in a cold environment, and peripheral vision can be restricted when operators are bundled up against the cold,” says Wendzel. “So rack durability, longevity, ease-of-use and safety were vital to us.” Wendzel was concerned that the industry’s typical, light gauge, roll-formed rack he had previously reviewed would be prone to forklift damage and costly replacement. As a solution, Southwest Docking and Handling recommended and Coloma Frozen Foods chose SK3000® pallet rack, a rugged bolted rack with structural channel columns, by Steel King. A number of rack features helped the company meet its strength, durability, and maintenance goals. Compared to typical racking, the pallet rack constructed of hotrolled structural channel column with full horizontal and diagonal bracing offers greater frame strength, durability and cross-sectional area. All Grade-5 hardware provides greater shear strength, and a heavy 7-gauge wrap-around connector plate ensures a square and plumb installation with a tighter connection and greater moment resistance. “Over 23,000,000 lbs. of frozen product are stored in Coloma Frozen Foods’ freezer and rack space, including 9,000 pallet positions of 4" structural c-channel drive-in rack, says Wendzel. The rack is five levels high including a floor level, and arrayed from two to five pallet positions deep for both storage efficiency and an ability to accommodate a range of SKUs.” “With the drive-in rack’s efficient frozen storage, we’ve consolidated our operations on one campus and aim to double our re-pack capability,” says Wendzel. “The interest and amortization of our new facility is less than what we paid for commercial storage.” Compared to typical rack, the drive-in rack includes a number of features that enhance ease-of-use and safety. According to Southwest Docking and Handling’s President Jim Nowicki, the drive-in load rail construction includes: flared rail entry ends to allow easy bay access; space-saver low profile arms that increase clearance and decrease possible product damage; structural angle rails that “guide” pallets for ease of use; welded aisle-side load arms that eliminate hazardous load projections into aisles; and welded rail stops that prevent loads from being pushed off and increase safety. For added protection against forklift impact, a forklift tire rub rail was mounted near the floor to guide the vehicle safely into the rack. All uprights and columns also have oversized baseplates for greater rack stability. According to Wendzel, 2" vertical adjustability of the bolted drivein rack also allows for a variety of configurations for current or future products. “The efficient frozen storage of our drive-in rack has been key in helping us to expand, cut cost, and improve safety while consolidating our facilities,” concludes Wendzel. Industry News UniCarriers Americas Announces Second Factory-Owned Dealership UniCarriers Americas Corporation, a leading manufacturer of material handling equipment, continues its diversification in the material handling retail market with the acquisition of Capital Equipment & Handling Inc., headquartered in Hartland, Wis. Since 1984, Capital Equipment & Handling has served southern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with a complete selection of material handling and floor maintenance equipment. The company, which has approximately 85 employees, has been an authorized dealer of UniCarriers Americas for more than 30 years. The acquisition was finalized on March 2, 2015. Terms of the transaction are not disclosed. UniCarriers’ entrance into the U.S. material handling retail market began in 2014 as a key growth strategy, when UniCarriers acquired its first factory-owned dealership, New England Industrial Truck, in Woburn, Mass. The growth strategy is designed to augment its high-performing dealer network by providing the broadest sales coverage and highest quality aftermarket support. “With the acquisition of our second retail business, we continue our plans to use factory owned stores as one of several tools to strengthen our distribution network and complement our existing independent dealer partners,” said Anthony Salgado, president, UniCarriers Americas. “Through future investments like these, we intend to promote the value of the UniCarriers brand, while providing UCA’s growing multi-location customer base with consistent and value-driven national service and support.” After twelve years in forklift sales, Richard (Dick) Muenster founded Capital Equipment & Handling in 1984. Over the next three decades, Dick and his team would turn their small Brookfield, Wis. office into a successful business of four thriving locations, serving the material handling needs of companies throughout Wisconsin. Dick will retire in March 2015. In 2004, Jerry Ziglinski joined Capital Equipment & Handling’s partnership team. Jerry will continue as branch manager for CEH’s Fox Valley location. All four factory-owned dealership sites will operate under the management of Gary Hansen, who has been with CEH since 1985, managing sales and operations for 30 years. Hansen was honored with UniCarriers’ Pinnacle Lifetime Sales Achievement Award in 1996. He will report to James J. Radous III, executive vice president, sales, UniCarriers Americas, who, in August 2014, took on the added responsibility for leadership of UCA’s new Retail Operations channel. “Capital Equipment & Handling has consistently grown its sales by double-digit increases each of the past five years, positioning the dealership in the top 10 percent. We are pleased to have a dealership whose reputation in this Midwest region is as strong as Capital Equipment & Handling’s,” said Radous III. “By leveraging UniCarriers’ superior products with Capital’s experienced customer sales and support team, the potential for growth in this region is practically limitless.” UniCarriers Americas and Capital Equipment & Handling have a long, successful relationship, beginning in 1985, when Capital Equipment & Handling became an authorized Nissan Forklift dealership. Since then, the company earned various honors, including recognition as a Nissan Forklift Nine winner the past five consecutive years, and seven times overall. And as of 2007, Capital Equipment & Handling has also been a member of the OEM’s dealer advisory group. “The strong working relationship between UniCarriers and Capital Equipment over the years, and a strategic alignment of values, make

this endeavor a certain success,” said Gary Hansen, vice president, Capital Equipment & Handling. UniCarriers Americas Corporation was formed in 2013, when Nissan Forklift Corporation, North America joined forces with TCM America. UniCarriers Americas Corporation is a division of UniCarriers Corporation headquartered in Tokyo. The merger positioned UniCarriers Americas as the fifth largest material handling equipment manufacturer in the Americas market. During the past year, UniCarriers Americas made several additional investments to provide the groundwork for its growth goals. It expanded its Marengo headquarters campus with a 120,000-squarefoot manufacturing annex for additional manufacturing capacity, and grew its product development department by 46 percent. UniCarriers Americas Corporation’s parent company, UniCarriers Corporation, is investing $40 million in a global research and development facility to be completed this year, which will shorten product development cycles and increase product technology capabilities. “Capital Equipment & Handling is a well-respected material handling dealership with a proven track record of strong sales performance and customer-focused support that has historically delivered superior growth and customer retention. We are pleased with the opportunities this alliance offers for the future of our businesses,” said Salgado. UniCarriers Americas Corporation UniCarriersAmericas.com

TRUCKLOAD & L.T.L. SHIPMENTS (less than truckload)

I was reminded of this terrible disease again this morning from Jeff Walker. The few people who are not stricken with this malady can truly be considered “the exception.” Most people feel it is their God-given right to exercise the sure tell-tale sign that this disease is running rampant. Here are the two phrases: 1) “Yeah but …” 2) “The problem with that is.” Both suck the air right out of an otherwise, potentially good idea. You are probably not aware of the many times you utter these exact phrases after hearing an idea from one of your associates. A knee-jerk response is to poke holes in other people’s ideas. Once you focus on these two phrases you will see what an epidemic we have in this area. It is easy for me to tell you to remove these two phrases from your daily communications. It will take a concerted, focused effort on your part to respond with, “That sounds interesting. How are you planning to pull that off?” I hope you can see the difference. The lesson here is not to be an idea buster. Instead, become an idea stimulator. Ideas, in and of themselves are neither good not bad. They are ideas. And ideas need cultivation, not a life-ending introduction to an unnecessary disease. Practice saying this: “That sounds interesting. How are you planning to pull that off?” Become the Exception - Mike Marchev is a marketing humorist who has the skill to motivate. He shares his personal experiences and lessons in a fun, light and refreshing fashion through his monthly articles. Learn more about Mike at www.marchev.com.

10 Forklift Operator Training Requirements

Safety Corner

By: Jeff Ord of Forklift Safety Training Services, Inc.

The most frequent asked question that FORKLIFTSAFETY. COM receives in their office on a daily basis is, “What do we need to do to become OSHA compliant?” Contrary to the many confused interpretations that we hear, our answer is simple and by the book as defined by the OSHA Federal Regulation 29CFR1910.178, paragraph L, “Operator Training.” 1. It is THE employer’s responsibility to train, test, evaluate and authorize every one of their forklift operator’s. 2. Training and Evaluation(s) are the employer’s responsibility, regardless of previous experience or prior training. 3. All training must be site and equipment specific. 4. Driving evaluation tests must be completed and filed for each forklift operator for every forklift that they operate to include loaners, rentals or any new or used forklift’s acquired. 5. OSHA clearly states; “Certification. The EMPLOYER shall certify that each operator has been trained and evaluated as required by this paragraph L”. 6. The employer is certifying to OSHA that they are in compliance with OSHA’s training requirements and that every operator has been trained, tested, evaluated and authorized. 7. Forklift operators are not certified, they are authorized. 8. Daily Safety Inspection Report Forms must be filled out on every forklift at the beginning of every shift.

9. Training shall consist of a complete video review of the entire OSHA Federal Regulation 29CFR1910.178, Powered Industrial Trucks, Operator Workbook, pre-shift Safety Inspections, Written Test and Driving Evaluation Test(s). After each operator has successfully completed OSHA’s training requirements and for those forklift operator’s that can demonstrate safe driving skills and practices on a daily basis, Authorization Cards and Certificates of Completion can be issued by the employer to the forklift operator(s). 10. From a liability standpoint, we recommend that the employer takes two hours every year to re-certify their forklift operator’s by providing classroom instruction and driving evaluations. Forklift operator safety training does not need to be boring or lengthy. Our simple to present and easy to understand OSHA compliant training materials require a two hour classroom instruction which is video based instruction that is interactive with the operator’s handbook. A 15 minute safety meeting that OSHA refers to as a “Lunch Box” session does not qualify or meet the OSHA training standard for forklift operator training. Good record keeping of your training and testing materials is imperative in the event of an OSHA audit or demand is made in the event of a liability lawsuit. FORKLIFTSAFETY.COM is the “Nations Leader” with one of the most informative websites relating to forklift operator safety and training. Call or log on today: 800/494-3225 or www.forkliftsafety.com

All of CECOR’s heavy-duty carts can be paired with CECOR’s dumping for elevated, rotational dumping of fully loaded carts. The dumping frame is secured to an overhead hook hoist or forklift truck. The frame is then secured to the CECOR cart by the cart’s trunnion pins (equipped standard), which can be adjusted to accommodate load weights from light and bulky to heavy and dense. When the loaded cart is ready to be emptied, the operator simply pulls on a lanyard, which triggers a spring on the frame that overturns and rotates the cart 360 degrees for thorough emptying. The now-empty cart easily returns to an upright position for return to the ground. CECOR www.cecor.net

Stellana US Inc. announces new polyurethane Tmax Press-on tires

Jervis B. Webb leads market in heavy-load automatic guided vehicle

Stellana US Inc. announces the addition of TMax™ to its family of polyurethane press on tires. In a significant number of material handling applications, there is a need for a multi-use drive tire for IC and electric lift trucks. The unique material formulation of TMax™ has a higher coefficient of friction with a lower durometer, all while increasing the load and speed capacity of the tire. “Consumers only have two material options for tires, rubber or polyurethane, and neither material provides an optimal solution for these multi-use situations”, said Michael Scoon, Director of Sales and Marketing for Stellana.

Jervis B. Webb Company leads the industry in custom-made heavy-load Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs) that are capable of automatically picking up and moving materials that weigh up to 250,000 pounds. Webb’s latest multi-independent steer drive design allows heavy-duty AGVs to effortlessly steer through a facility. Two to four axles are available to handle the heaviest of loads. The four independent all-electric steer drive option allows the vehicle to move in a sideways direction, referred to as “crab lateral travel”. Companies that handle loads of this magnitude often rely on AGVs to safely maneuver through manufacturing and warehousing facilities, and even outdoors. Webb offers a complete line-up of customized AGVs that move loads ranging from 20,000 – 250,000 pounds.

Good Friends = Good Work One-third of American workers have met a close friend at work. If you look at your friends, that’s probably not a big surprise. Belonging to a community is a basic human desire, and since we spend a lot of time at work it’s only natural we seek and find like-minded people. The good news is: working in a friendly community improves moral, happiness and your connection to your company. According to Gallup, the management consulting powerhouse, friendships at work are the strongest indicator of productivity. Their research shows “that employees with a best friend at work tend to be more focused, more passionate and more loyal to their organizations. They get sick less often, suffer fewer accidents and change jobs less frequently. They even have more satisfied customers.” TVH is committed to strengthening employee ties to each other and to the company. TVH wants to remind everyone that they are valued and that they are important. Recent initiatives include more department celebrations and more employee recognition from both managers and co-workers. For example, there are small “you’re awesome” tabs that you can leave on a co-workers desk to let them know their work is appreciated. You can leave it anonymously or attach your name to it. Krista Weiss, seven-year employee in SSI Sales, recently received one. “This was sitting on my desk when I came back from lunch... kinda cool!” she said. “It made my afternoon. It’s nice to know that others see how hard I’m working.” Seemingly small things can really lift someone’s spirit and make employees feel good about the organization they work for.

Industry News Prominent industry experts join Dearborn’s Material Handling Systems division The Material Handling Systems Division of Dearborn Mid-West Company (DMW) is poised for greater innovation and expansion with the recent addition of key design, engineering and operations personnel. Four new team members—together with existing senior management—bring more than 160 years of combined experience to the table, raising the bar for hands-on knowledge and expertise. DMW’s newest team members comprise some of the top conveyor systems talent in the country. All four gentlemen have known each other and worked together for years, most recently at S&S Systems. Stuart Tacy, Sr. has nearly 60 years of know-how in the design of material handling systems. He began his career in the industry in the late 1950s and is known today as a guru of distribution center design. His first positions were in the sales area for Alvey Conveyor and, later, Litton Unit Handling Systems (now Dematic). In 1972, Tacy, Sr. formed Boyson Conveyor Systems, a systems integrator primarily focused on the retail marketplace. In 1998, he co-founded S&S Systems with his son, Stuart, Jr. They grew the company from a two-man operation to a business that provided unique warehouse and distribuStuart Tacy, Sr. tion center solutions to some of the largest retailers in the country. “The former S&S team is excited about being part of Dearborn’s growth. We’ve worked hard over the years building innovative and cost-effective systems for our customers. Now, as part of the Dearborn organization, we will provide those benefits to a larger and more diverse customer base,” said Tacy, Sr. “Bringing personnel with tremendous experience in the warehouse Stuart Tacy, Jr. and distribution space together with the financial and human resources of Dearborn, we’re sure to create a win-win situation for our customers.” Stuart Tacy, Jr. joins DMW as Senior Systems Engineer. He was the other “S” in S&S Systems. Tacy, Jr.’s 25 years of material handling systems experience dates back to his first industry job with Reliance Equipment Company. In 1989, he joined the applicaMichael McGrath tions engineering department at Boyson and, eventually, moved into sales. Later, he worked for Key Handling Systems in a similar role. At S&S, he wore many hats—doing whatever necessary to close sales and manage projects from initial concept and design through final implementation. His varied roles included sales, estimating and proposal development, systems design, engineering and project management. Scott Yacono

Michael McGrath has more than 30 years of experience under his ‘belt,’ moving from being a one-man conveyor division at Reliance in the 1980s to Partner at S&S in 1999. Along the way, he worked for Sandvik Process Systems, Boyson and Key Handling. His expertise encompasses all aspects of turnkey systems design: estimating and proposal preparation, system and component engineering, project management, purchasing, installation and start-up support. As Senior Systems Engineer, he will lead projects, perform overall systems design and system and equipment engineering, and play a key role in sales support. McGrath’s extensive experience with conveyor solutions and garment handling systems will serve DMW well. Scott Yacono has 17 years of experience in the industry. He joined S&S in 1998 as an AutoCAD operator, admittedly knowing very little about material handling systems. He grew into new roles, such as creating AutoCAD and 3D concept drawings, estimating and quoting projects, and providing detailed engineering and systems sales support. As Design Engineer at DMW, Yacono will be responsible for developing proposal drawings and estimates, engineered systems drawings and order processing. Dearborn Mid-West Company www.dmwcc.com

New enhanced Maxi-Duty casters ride low, haul 20-ton Hamilton’s new addition to its caster lineup handles up to 20 tons and keeps a low profile. The Enhanced Maxi-Duty (EMD2) Series features dual wheel forged steel wheels for heavy manufacturers who need to boost load capacities without increasing overall height. The forged steel wheels are precision CNC-machined with a slight crown for improved rollability and swiveling, then clear-coated for a beautiful pristine appearance. A hybrid of Hamilton’s Maxi-Duty and Ultra Maxi-Duty lines, the new EMD2 series packs a small mounting plate paired with a massive swivel construction. The common mounting plate size (8 1⁄2" by” 8 1⁄2") makes it easy to swap out existing casters with EMD2.

IMI introduces new WeighPlus™ crane scales Industrial Magnetics, Inc. recently introduced the WeighPlus™ crane scale, a programmable device that warns the operator if they are lifting an overload, thereby protecting them from an unsafe lifting situation. Prior to lifting, the weigh scale’s working load limit (WLL) is set to match the rating on the lifting device being used, such as a magnet, sling, or chain. During the lift operation, the weigh scale’s LED displays the weight being lifted and will warn the operator if they exceed the WLL of their lifting device with a flashing red display.

Product Preview New vehicle-scale conversion kits increase scale performance Scales that use outdated analog technology are prone to downtime and weighing errors that eat into profits. Now, there’s another option to bring scales back to top working order without having to replace the entire scale—vehicle-scale conversion kits from METTLER TOLEDO. Aging analog scales can be expensive to keep in working order. Their high-maintenance load cells have a tendency to need frequent repairs, causing downtime and costing companies money. METTLER TOLEDO now can replace existing load-cells in non-METTLER TOLEDO scales with POWERCELL® PDX® load cells. METTLER TOLEDO www.mt.com

Industry News Influence: The ultimate power tool By: Influence At Work

In business today, effective influence is essential. Want your ideas implemented? You must influence others to act on them. Want more clients? You must influence people to buy from you. Want more advancement or responsibility? You must influence executives to see the value you offer. In all respects, being able to influence others is the ultimate power tool. So, what makes people say “yes” to your requests? Researchers have been studying influence for over 60 years. While it’s nice to think that we are all logical beings who study facts and information to guide our thinking and decision making process, scientific research shows otherwise. Following are the six proven universal principles of persuasion, that when used ethically, can influence others to change their behavior.

1. Reciprocity There’s a powerful rule that says that we should try to repay what others have done for us. If someone gives us a gift, we feel compelled to give a gift in return. If someone extends us an invitation, we should extend one to them. And if someone does us a favor, we owe them a favor in return. By virtue of the Reciprocity Principle, people feel obligated to the future repayment of items, actions, favors and gifts. You see Reciprocity initiated in business every day, even if you don’t immediately recognize it. From suppliers sending relevant industry specific information to clients, to managers providing personalized guidance, to co-workers helping each other meet a deadline, Reciprocity can be initiated in many ways. The key to effectively using Reciprocity is to be the first to give, give unconditionally, and be sure that your “gift” is personalized and unexpected.

2. Scarcity Have you ever noticed that people seem to want more of those things they can have less of? That’s the Scarcity Principle at work. Marketers know the power of this principle, which is why their ads often contain such phrases as “Limited Time Only” or “Limited Quantities Available.” When true, Scarcity affects the value of information too. In other words, information that is exclusive is more persuasive. So the next time you gain access to information that is not readily available and that supports an idea or initiative you would like the organization to adopt, gather the key players and say, “I just got this information today. It won’t be distributed until next week, but I want to give you an early look at what it entails.” Your listeners will lean forward and listen intently. The key to using Scarcity successfully, whether for a product, service, or information, is to not just honestly tell people the benefits they’ll gain, but also point out what’s unique and what they stand to lose if they don’t move in your direction.

3. Authority Research shows that people typically follow the lead of those they perceive as credible and knowledgeable experts. Surprisingly, people mistakenly assume that others recognize their experience. To ensure that they do, first determine what your relevant background, experience, and expertise are for the person you are trying to influence. If you don’t do this, you will be sabatoshing the power of your own message. For maximum impact, arrange to have a third party communicate this information. Another option is to

direct the person you want to influence to something in writing that highlights your credentials The key to using Authority successfully is to signal to others what makes you credible and knowledgeable before you make your influence attempt.

4. Consistency People feel compelled to be consistent with their prior behaviors or statements they have made. When someone makes a commitment actively, either by writing it down or speaking it out loud, it’s even more likely that they’ll follow through with that commitment. You can activate the Consistency Principle by looking for or asking for small initial commitments. The key to using Consistency successfully is to look for voluntary, active, and public commitments … and get them in writing.

5. Liking People prefer to say “yes” to those they know and like. But what makes someone like you? Science tells us there are three important factors that contribute to likeability: 1) we like people who like us (and tell us); 2) we like people who are similar to us; and 3) we like people who cooperate with us toward mutual goals. The key to using Liking successfully is to be honest in your praise, find genuine similarities, uncover opportunities to work together toward common goals, and get to know people more meaningfully before talking business.

6. Social Proof Humans are social creatures. And as such, we rely heavily on the people around us for cues on how to think, feel, and act. In other words, people look to the actions of others to determine their own. This is why using testimonials from happy and satisfied customers is so effective in marketing campaigns. You can use Social Proof when attempting to get your ideas implemented. Imagine that you’re trying to streamline your department’s work processes, but a member of your group is resisting. Rather than try to convince this group member yourself, ask a couple of veteran employees who support the initiative to speak up for it at a team meeting. The veterans’ testimony stands a much better chance of convincing the group member than yet another speech from the boss, as Social Proof is often better exerted horizontally rather than vertically. The key to using Social Proof successfully is to have similar others share their positive story to your target.

Exert Your Influence Today Influence is a very powerful tool. When you ethically implement these six scientifically validated principles of persuasion, you’ll be making small, practical, and often costless changes that can lead to big differences in your ability to change others’ behavior. In the end, you’ll not only achieve your objectives, but you’ll also guide the other party to the best decision for their needs. That’s when true success transpires for everyone involved. Influence At Work (IAW®) was founded by Robert Cialdini, Ph.D, Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Marketing and author of the New York Times bestseller, Influence. Dr. Cialdini is a highly sought after keynote presenter on the ethical business applications of the Science of Influence. Visit www.INFLUENCEATWORK.com. Follow us at @robertcialdini.

out there that are not utilizing this cost-effective technology.” He added: “The Topsides format provided direct exposure of the product without relying on dealer representation, allowing us to present features and benefits directly to key decision makers and upper management. These upper level managers are key to Straightpoint’s continued growth and participation in high level projects.” The Galveston, Texas location of the event added further value to Straightpoint’s participation in that much of the growth potential for the company in North America is generated by the state, where Ayling hopes to have a physical presence in the near future. Molidor reiterated the importance of that expansion. He said: “Myself and David came away from the event with an extremely positive outlook for the company’s future growth and are reassured that a Houston, Texas branch must be an integral part of our plans.” That said, PennWell Corporation drew a truly global audience to the event with attendees from China, Singapore, Australia, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, and Chile all stopping at the Straightpoint booth and making enquiries. The positivity generated served as further encouragement to Straightpoint’s global network of partners to continue to engage in select trade events. Ayling said: “We continually encourage and challenge our dealers to keep our brand and products in front of the target market and we will support them with whatever products and literature they need to do that successfully.” Straightpoint www.straightpoint.com

Straightpoint introduces load cell range End users from the oil and gas industry took note of the myriad of safety advantages offered by Straightpoint’s force measurement, load monitoring and suspended weighing load cell range at the Topsides, Platforms & Hulls Conference & Exhibition in Galveston, Texas last month. Such was the level of interest generated in the dynamic load monitoring capability of load cells in particular, Straightpoint director David Ayling and John Molidor, the general manager of the stateside operation, who were both in attendance, made a swift decision to take exhibition space at the event next year. The Topsides show (named in part after the upper section of an offshore oil platform), organised by PennWell Corporation, gave Ayling and Molidor an opportunity to interact with end users who apply equipment to the design, engineering, construction, transportation, installation, and modification of topside structures, platforms and hulls. It was a priceless opportunity to submerge the business in an end user market, given that much of the company’s networking activity revolves around its ongoing campaign to partner with rigging companies and other distributors. Ayling said: “Given the demographic in attendance we had the privilege of educating delegates and offer a deep drill into the safety and other benefits of our load cell range as applicable to their lifting applications. It was refreshing to be able to introduce the product to professionals and help them formulate an idea or solution to a challenge that they face in their operations.” “A very large percentage of visitors to our booth didn’t even realize that digital dynamometers or tension load cells existed,” said Molidor. “Imagine how many oil and gas-related fabrication shops are

Industry Link Why you shouldn’t leave your social media to a niece or nephew or your son, daughter or even the kid down the street It’s true that millennials are massive users of social media, but does that mean any young friend or family member has the background to be enlisted to give your business’ social media campaign the attention it needs? Probably not. Let’s take a look at several good reasons to put your social media marketing in the hands of a pro.

• Experience and education Simply put, unless one of your family members has a background in marketing and – more specifically – digital marketing, they likely won’t have a real theoretical basis for their methods. Yes, we all know how to like, comment, share, tweet, etc., but a real social media expert will have a formal and professional background in their craft. This is vital for ensuring that your social media channels play a real role in the overall marketing strategy behind your brand or product. Real social media managers continually hone their knowledge and keep up to date with trends throughout the social space, marketing world, et al. All of this experience and focus are vital to ensuring your social media follow a thought out and effective….

• Strategy While most of your young family members may have seriously impressive strategies when it comes to Clash of Clans, they likely don’t have a clue about how to build and execute a proper social media strategy. Why is strategy so important? Stephen Covey points out that highly effective people must “Begin with the end in mind.” This is essentially the basis of all strategy – what are we trying to accomplish? Are we seeking more likes? Do we want to increase our sales? Do we seek to drive more traffic to our blog? These questions we answer with an outline of strategies and actions that we believe will help us accomplish our goals and objectives. A true social media manager will have a formal background in marketing, giving them insight that those without experience or knowledge would be blind to. Strategy is important for setting goals and outlining the actions you’ll take to achieve them.

• Tools

When you hire a social media strategist you aren’t simply paying for their time. A good social media manager will have a gang of tools procured through countless hours of research or through larger-thanyou’d-bet credit card transactions. Those beautiful analytics reports they create are the result of these costly tools and applications. They provide insight that would otherwise get lost in the day-to-day workings of your social real estate. This information is vital for doing testing that allows managers to finely tune their strategy to ensure the best possible outcomes.

• Time and attention

A lot of times when we ask others for a favor, they will enthusiastically accept. This enthusiasm will gradually and inevitably decay, leading to your social media presence – and possibly your business – taking a hit. When you hire a real social media expert, you gain a new member of your marketing team. Strategists live and breathe social media, but more importantly they love to get their clients results. Just like a chef wants to put out a great tasting meal, a social media strategist wants to have a positive impact on your brand. Their job is to provide you with the support you need to allow you to focus on the things you excel at. If you’re an author, you can focus on your writing. If you’re an organic food company, you can focus on your farmers and health of your production. If you’re a CEO, you can focus on the most important and timely aspects of your business. A real social media manager gives their time and attention to giving you back your focus.

• Because you love them

Yes, your young family members look up to you and want to help. Unfortunately, social media management is a lot more work than most assume. It takes wit, writing skills, formal training and education, strategizing, and expensive tools. It takes a lot of time, too. Time your niece or nephew could spend following their dreams, getting scholarships or studying for their finals. As the adage goes: “If you love something, set it free.” Your relatives will thank you – as will your business.
