Konecranes offers rigging fundamentals course Konecranes Training Institute aims to reduce crane accidents through education. Konecranes is the USA’s overhead crane industry leader with a complete range of lifting equipment, and the country’s largest team of industrial crane service professionals. Konecranes Training Institute in New Berlin WI is a key element in the portfolio of equipment and expertise with which Konecranes supports its customers. “Many crane accidents are caused by poor or improper rigging practices,” says Jim Lang, general manager of the Konecranes Training Institute. “One of the key items we learned from our Crane Accident study covering 10 years’ worth of overhead crane accidents was that 59 percent of the time when a load dropped this was due to a rigging issue. This very common deficiency is what we address in our Rigging Fundamentals course.” Details revealed by the study are available in a short video produced by Konecranes Training Institute. It can be estimated that up to 70 percent of the overhead crane accidents may have been prevented by proper training. According to Lang, the Rigging Fundamentals course from the Konecranes Training Institute teaches workers how to safely rig loads for different lifting conditions. For example, a 5,000-pound load rigged for a low headroom lift close to the ceiling could potentially require chains rated at 25,000 pounds or greater rather than 5,000 pounds depending on the angle between the hook and the load. Acute angles may multiply lifting stresses by more than five times the actual weight of the load. Nucor Steel Gallatin in Ghent, KY has hosted the Rigging Fundamentals and Signalling courses more than 20 times, covering more than 300 employees over in 2014. According to Nucor Steel Gallatin’s Electrical Engineer Joe Rachford, the course has been invaluable since OSHA regulations changed to differentiate between operational and construction lifts. “We could be picking up a motor, and if it is an in-kind motor, that is a maintenance lift and qualifies as operational. However, if it is an upgraded energy-efficient motor, it becomes a construction lift as it is new equipment,” says Rachford. “To cover ourselves, we now train everyone to the more stringent standards for construction lifts.” Rachford says that while Konecranes training overlaps much of what Nucor had already established with their normal maintenance procedures, the Konecranes course is more technical and contains much more detail. “We received very positive critiques coming back from the individual associates who completed the classes. I looked at every one and for the most part, all were very complimentary,” says Rachford. Nucor Steel’s Gallatin campus is now working with Jim Lang to put four individuals through Konecranes “train the trainer” course to ensure that there is a trainer available on-site when needed. Instructors must complete training every two years to remain certified, and the training materials are licensed from Konecranes. “Since all of our new hires must complete the course before they can perform construction lift work, this program gives us the ability to go to our training room and immediately provide the same oneon-one instruction that Konecranes conducts on site,” Rachford said. “It is a great time-saver for us.” Konecranes Training Institute lists all available courses and its popular regional seminars on its website at www.cranetrainingu.com. Safety Corner Pedestrian Safety is No Accident Barry Lauterwasser, President, Symbion Marketing. Symbion Marketing

When it comes to forklift safety, a lot of emphasis is placed upon safe forklift operation—as it should be. What we see quite frequently, though, is a lack of training for employees working in a warehouse situation but who do not operate forklifts but merely work around them all day, every day. Working around them without knowledge pertaining to their potential hazards creates a dangerous scenario f or catastrophe. We recommend formal classroom training for all of your facility employees who could encounter a forklift in the course of their responsibilities. This training should cover the following: How forklifts and similar equipment operate: While operator training is not required, it is nevertheless important for employees to know the limitations of forklifts and their operators in a warehouse setting. • Visibility: The operator’s vision is severely limited, especially when carrying a load. There are many other pitfalls of assuming that the operator is aware of the employee’s presence. • Eye contact: Employees should try to make eye contact with an operator. This ensures that the operator is fully aware of the employee’s presence. Busy operators may or may not be aware of the pedestrian, and any sudden move could result in a collision. • Stopping: A 7,000-lb. forklift carrying a 5,000-lb. load cannot stop as quickly as a car, and if the operator slams on the brakes to avoid an employee, the employee could find 5,000 pounds of product hurtling in his direction. • Keeping your distance: Never approach a forklift from the rear. Keep beyond three feet of the side, and never stand in front of a forklift or on the forks. This keeps the pedestrian safe should any sudden movement of the forklift occur. • Forklifts cannot be heard: Electric forklifts are completely silent, and even internal combustion units can approach without being heard in a busy, noisy facility. Be certain that all pedestrians understand this and are diligently LOOKING for lift trucks and equipment at all times, particularly at intersections. The potential dangers of working around this equipment: Rear ends swing wide, loads can spill, toes can be run over, and many other dangers exist if the employee is not cognizant of how to behave around a forklift. Lift trucks present a number of dangers. The operators are aware of these hazards, but pedestrians often consider forklifts benign pieces of equipment. • Falling loads: When walking near a lift truck depositing or retrieving a load at various heights, a pedestrian should know that loads can tumble down. The pedestrian should avoid the area at all costs. • Wide swings: The rear of the forklift can swing quickly to one side or the other, resulting in collision with a pedestrian or running over feet. • Weight: People rarely understand that forklifts are very heavy machines that cannot stop quickly. A collision often results in serious injury and sometimes death. Pedestrians need to understand this and respect the potential dangers.

• Proper use: Pedestrians should know that they are not allowed to operate this equipment without proper training, even if it is to hop on a quickly moving lift truck to find the product they are seeking. • Reporting: Any unsafe conditions should be reported by pedestrians immediately to a supervisor. These include unsafe operation or conditions in the facility that create a potential for accident. What you can do to minimize these potential dangers: As a manager or supervisor, you must ensure that each person entering your facility, whether he is another employee or a guest, understands these potential hazards and is alert for them when in your facility. • Training and briefing: Training pedestrians or employees who regularly enter your facility should be a requirement, whether the person is an employee, vendor, or other guest who is a regular visitor. If you have an occasional visitor, this guest should be briefed on what type of equipment you operate, how it operates, your safety procedures, and the need to be alert at all times. • Install lanes and pedestrian islands: Simple pedestrian lanes painted on the floor and training on how to use them are the ultimate scenario to protect pedestrians. Having protected islands for pedestrians to pack or perform other duties keeps them safe when working among forklifts. • Lighting: Provide adequate lighting in aisles and other areas to ensure maximum visibility. • Set speed limits: Finding the balance between maximizing productivity and creating a safe environment for employees is key. Aisle speeds and intersection speeds will vary and are different for each facility. • Install mirrors at intersections: Then, train employees and operators alike to use them to see what’s coming around the corner. • Ensure that all safety devices on all of your lift trucks are operational: Items like back-up alarms, horns, and lights should be checked daily to ensure operational effectiveness. It takes only a few seconds of inattentiveness for an accident to occur. Training, informing, and monitoring produce a safe work environment and minimize your bottom line exposure, should an accident occur. Safety is no accident, and if we can be of any service to you in creating a safe work environment, we are here to help. Barry Lauterwasser, President, Symbion Marketing. Industry News Stertil ALM purchases land to grow production of vehicle lifts Heavy duty vehicle lift leader, Stertil-Koni, a brand of the Stertil Group, announced that its U.S. production facility, Stertil ALM, has purchased a 4.5 acre parcel adjacent to its current manufacturing plant in Streator, Illinois. The acquisition will enable Stertil ALM to remain in Streator, make an investment for future growth and further expand production of Stertil-Koni’s award-winning heavy duty vehicle lifts. Commenting on the announcement, Streator Mayor Jimmie Lansford stated, “Stertil ALM is a major employer in Streator and the anticipated expansion is positive for the community.” Stertil ALM intends to begin construction on the new parcel in the spring of 2015 and complete the expansion later in the year. Allan Pavlick, Vice President of Stertil ALM stated, “The increased acreage and production space allows the company to keep all the operations under one roof. The expansion will allow Stertil ALM to increase efficiency and productivity. In addition to the growth in the North American market, Stertil ALM is exporting in-ground lift products worldwide.” The additional manufacturing space will primarily be dedicated to the fabrication and assembly of the Stertil-Koni DIAMOND LIFT, a full rise telescopic piston lift setting new standards in precision heavy duty lifting, and SKYLIFT—an “open floor” concept, true vertical-rise platform lift with no crossbeams, no overhang and no base frame. Stertil ALM, already a major employer in Streator, anticipates that the expansion will further contribute to job creation in the area.

The expansion also comes on the heels of several recent enhancements to the existing facility, including an additional 14,000 square feet of production space added in 2011, including a new training center. In addition, it represents the next phase of a major capital investment at the facility and in the production of Stertil-Koni vehicle lifts. Last year, Stertil ALM purchased and brought online a new, world-class cutting machine that utilizes a combination of plasma and oxy-fuel torches coupled with a state-of-the-art PC-based, touch screen controller for extremely fast, high-precision manufacturing -a major milestone in ALM’s strategic migration towards in-sourcing. Stertil-ALM also purchased and installed an additional CNC machining center and a high capacity overhead crane to its facility in 2014. Stertil-Koni www.stertil-koni.com

When is the best time to grow a tree?

Become The Exception

Mike Marchev

The answer to the question is “20 years ago.” Not spring. Not fall. Not winter. Not summer. If you planted a tree twenty years ago you would be enjoying a little shade today. “Duh! Is that all you got Mike?” Stay tuned. I love to receive incoming phone calls. I love to receive email from the people I care about. I love to hear how well people are doing. I love to hear success stories. What I DO NOT like is when people call me with the “call of doom.” These usually come near the end of the week, and sound something like this: “Mike, I have invested so much time and money in building my business and nothing seems to be working. I attended the seminars, conferences and workshops. I bought the books. I am frustrated and at a complete loss as to what to do next. I am even willing to try your Inner Circle to see if you can help me.” I “hate” these calls. And although I try to shed a little hope on the situation, more often than not there is little I, or anybody else can do. Waiting until the 12th hour to seek help just makes everybody sad. And the truth is, it doesn’t have to be like that. Listen to the words of Casey Stengel, and think about what the old geezer was saying: “If my pitcher would pitch at the beginning of the game, the same way he pitches at the end of the game once he realizes he is losing, he wouldn’t be losing in the first place.” As much as I would like to flatter myself, my job is not to “get you out of a jam.” My job is to make sure you never get into a jam. Some wise old farmer put it another way, “You will reap what you sow.” Now

that I think of it, I think it was the Big Guy who reminded us of that truth. Regardless of who said it, you can take that advice to the bank. Good people, all you can do is all you can do. Just make sure that you are doing all you can do … today. Okay. You were waiting for it, so here it comes: “If you find yourself up against the proverbial wall and looking down the barrell of a travel business gone south, do not call me. Call your shrink … call your priest … call your bartender … call your ex-spouse who got you into this mess in the first place … but do not call me. Not because I don’t like you, but because you waited too long. You needed to plant your tree long before today. I may be a lot of things, but I am not a miracle worker. On the other hand, if you want to continue doing your happy dance for the rest of your dancing days, and perhaps polish up a few new steps, call me. If you want to stay away from trouble, call me. If you want to remove the word “procrastinate” from your working vocabulary, call me. If you want to laugh more, help more, and count more take-home pay, call me. CALL ME to become a card-carrying, certified member of a happening group of travel professionals who are making it their business never to play their “doom card.” EVER! As cliche-ish as it may sound, “Your future does lie in your hands.” You alone, along with a little prodding from an outsider perhaps, (and a gentle whack-in-the-head when warranted) can insure a bright future. Join The Inner Circle: Where winners come to play. Contact Mike at 848-702-1009 or email Mike@MikeMarchev.com

Industry News Load-Cell Upgrade Saves Money, Halts Downtime The cost required to replace a truck scale or rail scale can leave businesses shuddering. However, disruptions from an unreliable scale, including downtime and high repair costs, may leave a company with few choices to keep operations running smoothly. That was the case for a large American manufacturer of steel stock, wire and rebar. The Oregon-based company keeps its two truck scales and one 70-foot rail/truck combo scale going 24/7. Those scales receive more than 12,000 trucks every year while sending out about 10,000 annual shipments from the facilities, including steel scrap delivered by large rail shipments each month.

Monthly Repairs Add Up The steel company had three non-METTLER TOLEDO scales at its facilities that had been maintained by a third-party service company for the past 12 years. The scale service technicians replaced load cells on the rail/truck combo scale at the rate of one per month, costing an estimated $18,000 annually. The steel company also was hit with additional costs because this was the only rail scale at the facility. Repairs were adding up—along with demurrage charges from the railroad. Something needed to be done.

Scales are Critical For most manufacturers, truck scales and rail scales are critical to the overall operation and profitability of their business. The steel company was no exception. Their scales weigh inbound shipments to determine their value based on weight. Outbound shipments are checked for accuracy, including correct product and quantity, also based on weight. The analog load cells in the steel company’s scales were causing multiple issues. Their high failure rate resulted in inaccurate weights, increased repair costs and longer downtime. In a one-way traffic area with multiple crossings, rail-scale repairs meant major backups and tedious rerouting of trains to working scales. That disrupted normal operations and could cause unsafe conditions. Furthermore, even when the scale was operational, its accuracy was questioned. Analog load cells require frequent manual calibrations due to their tendency to “drift” outside of legal accuracy tolerances. With large transactions based on material weight, measurement errors directly affected profitability.

Warning Signs The scale company that was servicing the steel company’s scales generated a large portion of their revenue from service calls. On the surface, the cost of repair bills can appear small in comparison to the cost of a new scale. However, the unexpected costs of parts, labor and downtime combine to erode the scale owner’s bottom line. In most cases, those “break/fix” costs can be avoided with an improved weighing system. A long-term service relationship can be beneficial if it includes a high standard of work and concern for the customer’s best interests. That should include efforts to reduce the scale owner’s maintenance costs. Unfortunately, scales are specialized equipment, and most scale owners trust what they are told by their service provider. Some scale owners accept high maintenance and repair costs as part of owning a vehicle scale. As the steel company grew frustrated with their repair costs, they agreed to review a competing assessment from METTLER TOLEDO Service. When the METTLER TOLEDO service technician

inspected the scale, he noted several problems, including wires lying in mud, broken and missing check rods and damaged approaches. The wires should not be lying in mud or water because a small crack in the wire insulation is enough to cause a weighing error on an analog scale. It was clear that poor workmanship contributed to the large repair bills and regular load-cell failures.

Trusted Experts The transportation manager called his local METTLER TOLEDO representative for a bid on a new rail scale. Although a new METTLER TOLEDO rail/truck scale is an excellent choice to replace older worn out scales, the local representative asked if he could look into a simpler, less expensive solution— by repairing the existing structure and upgrading the scale’s load cells to a POWERCELL® PDX® weighing system. After a team of experienced METTLER TOLEDO service technicians inspected the scale for structural integrity, they presented a quote to replace the existing load-cell system with a new POWERCELL PDX system. That option was a fraction of the cost of an entirely new scale. The goal of the upgrade was to eliminate specific problem areas, such as failing junction boxes, and install new, advanced POWERCELL PDX load cells. The new load cells are built to handle the heavy traffic of thousands of trucks and rail cars, even in a scale pit that is often half full of water for six months out of the year. Keeping the existing scale structure meant that no foundation modifications were needed and downtime for the upgrade was less than it had been for some of the past repairs. The price included a five-year parts and labor replacement warranty on the POWERCELL PDX load cells and the new scale terminal, including protection from lighting strikes. The METTLER TOLEDO technician suggested that the performance of the new weighing system would reduce the need for calibration checks from four times a year to just twice per year. The preventative maintenance checks and calibrations would now take about an hour, compared to the four to six hours of downtime required for maintenance of analog load cells. The METTLER TOLEDO approach was to present long-term solutions to eliminate problems, while the previous scale service company simply kept charging the company for repeated short-term repairs.

POWERCELL® PDX® Load Cells METTLER TOLEDO manufactures POWERCELL PDX load cells for maximum reliability and accuracy under the harshest operating conditions. With a five-year parts and labor warranty, the transportation manager saw this as a no-risk proposal to fix his problems without major capital expenditure. The upgrade immediately proved to be the correct choice, and in three years, only one service call was made with no resulting cost to the customer. The steel company saw a return on its investment within two years. Now the company enjoys reduced downtime, eliminated repair costs, shortened time needed for preventative maintenance and confidence from increased accuracy. By finding the right solution that saved time, effort and money, the steel company has awarded METTLER TOLEDO additional business and has become a trusted long-term partner. Tech Talk The Importance of PCV Maintenance John Gelsimino

Have you ever maintained a truck on PM for several years and eventually pull the valve cover off in the shop and have the oil all gummed up and stuck to everything? Your first thought is usually – “that damn PM guy must have never changed the oil!” This may be true, but closer examination may surprise you. Neglect of an engine’s PCV valve is common and may be the reason for that gummy oil. Although PCV valves were around in the Continental engine days, they were not as critical as they are now. The overhead camshaft Mitsubishi and Mazda engines found in many different forklift brands are the most critical for PCV maintenance. Seasoned forklift technicians may not realize the importance of the PCV valve maintenance in today’s engines. The following article will explain the purpose of the PCV valve and why your service technicians should follow the routine maintenance intervals. Prior to the 1960s most engines vented directly into the atmosphere through a vent tube. A California professor revealed that one of the primary sources of smog were hydrocarbons from gasoline powered automobiles. The solution to the problem was the PCV valve which stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve. In typical fashion California was the first state to mandate the installation of the PCV in the early 1960s. This system slowly went nationwide by 1966. The PCV valve is a “one-way valve that ensures continual refreshment of the air inside a gasoline internal combustion engine’s crank-

case.” As an engine runs the crankcase begins to collect combustion chamber gases which leak past the piston rings. These gases contain compounds that are harmful to an engine. If these compounds are allowed to gather in the crankcase they become concentrated and form corrosive acids and sludge in the engines interior surfaces. This can harm the engine as it can clog small inner oil passages, causing engine overheating, poor lubrication, and high emission levels. A working PCV valve keeps the crankcase air as clean as possible which helps avoid engine failures. The PCV valve connects the crankcase to the intake manifold from a location opposite the breather. The Mitsubishi and Mazda’s are located on the valve cover opposite side of the breather. The valve is simple but performs a complicated function. An internal ball or cone style restrictor is held in the normal position with a light spring. The full size of the PCV opening is to the intake manifold with the restricted side towards the valve cover or crankcase. When the engine is running the tapered cone end is drawn towards the opening. By restricting the opening proportionate to the level of engine vacuum vs spring tension the valve changes with different throttle levels. At full throttle there is nearly zero vacuum. At this point the PCV valve is nearly useless and most combustion gases escape via the breather tube where they are drawn in to the engine’s intake manifold anyway. The objective is to redirect or recycle the engine’s blowby via sending it back into the intake. Since its functioning is very basic it is critical that the PCV valve system be kept clean and open. Incorrect air flow or a plugged or malfunctioning PCV system will eventually damage an engine. Isn’t it great when you do PM’s for $50 flat rate and then have the camshaft seize due to a lack of lubrication? Or when you lose an account because the customer has an in-house technician pull the valve cover and it’s full of sludge. Or just the minor customer complaint “the engine never used to tick that loud?” Both of these tend to look poorly on the quality of your dealership’s PM program. Much of this can be avoided if your road technicians stock the $5.00 - $15.00 PCV valves and remember to change them. PCV valve flow rates differ between engine models, the installation of an incorrect PCV valve may cause engine stalling, rough idle and other drivability complaints. Never install universal type PCV valves. Typical maintenance schedules for gasoline engines are to replace the PCV valve whenever spark plugs are replaced. The long life of the valve despite the harsh operating environment is due to the trace amounts of oil droplets suspended in the air that flows through the valve. These droplets keep the valve lubricated. I would bet that a majority of forklift dealerships do not change PCV valves on routine preventative maintenance and experience problems because of this. By following these simple steps your service department can avoid engine and customer relation problems. It is our job as forklift professionals to stay on top of maintenance related items for our customer’s equipment and this article should have helped. Smarter SenSor technology: HelpiNg iMprove Workplace Safety aNd efficieNcy Making manufacturing and warehousing environments safer and more efficient is a constant challenge. Novel, versatile sensor technologies providing reliable performance even in harsh conditions help tackle these critical issues effectively.

S

tatistics show that there are over a million forklifts operating in the U.S. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), they account for roughly 90,000 injuries every year, killing up to 100 people annually. OSHA also estimates that up to 70% of all reported incidents could be avoided with proper safety measures. New sensor technologies can play a key role in preventing collisions and reducing such accidents. However, traditional solutions often face limitations in manufacturing settings. Pioneering Leddar detection and ranging is a light-based, time-of-flight technology that promises to meet these challenges head-on: Leddar sensors detect people and objects with a rugged, cost-effective, no-moving-parts design that provides reliable, consistent performance, in any environment.

Pub LEDDAR_Promat_fev2015_.indd 2

In fact, smart sensors that use a diffuse light beam can cover a wider area and detect multiple objects simultaneously. They can therefore help locate any unwanted presence in restricted areas and make the perimeter around dangerous equipment more secure. Such no-contact sensors also prove very useful to provide precise measurements and level controls in containers, silos, tanks, and reservoirs, or estimate volumes in bulk material storage and handling.

Make Your Application Smarter with Leddar Technology Stemming from 10 years of R&D, patented Leddar technology is unaffected by dust, vibrations, or large temperature variations. Robust Leddar sensors work just as well indoors or outdoors, regardless of lighting or extreme conditions, delivering flawless performance at an affordable price.

For example, Leddar is already being integrated into driver assistance applications and could soon become mainstream for forklifts and heavy machinery as well. Leddar sensors can also be used on unmanned vehicles or on conveyor systems, providing additional protection through automated distance measurements or perimeter scanning.

Other Benefits of Leddar Smart Sensors

Likewise, smart sensor capabilities can ensure safer vehicle circulation around the plant: controlling vehicle access at gates, measuring/ validating vehicle dimensions, or helping trucks position themselves around loading docks are all examples of such possibilities.

• Low maintenance, high durability,

• Versatile detection — all types of objects (liquid or solid), as well as people and vehicles

• Wide area coverage • Consistent performance, in any environment no calibration needed

Industry News Ace Supplies Stacker Crane for 24-Hour Operation at Aluminum Facility Ace World Companies is manufacturing a 35 ton capacity stacker crane with two lifting devices for handling coils and pallets during 24-hour operation at Logan Aluminum in Russellville, Kentucky. A forked attachment and a singular steel rod will be permanent fixtures on the crane, which also includes an independently-operated cabin on a separate mast to the lifting attachment to enhance visibility, safety and efficiency of lifting operations. The core function of the Russellville facility is to take aluminum ingots, melt them and produce coils. Logan Aluminum produces two main alloy sheet products. Ace’s Kevin Beavers, who oversaw the sales process, said: “We are hugely excited to be finalizing the manufacturing stage of this highly specialized crane. It is a modern, bespoke design with the independently-operated cabin a standout feature. On many cranes of this type the operator’s cabin is on the same mast as the lifting device but here the operator can control his position in relation to the load to improve visibility and safety.” The crane will replace an older stacker from another manufacturer

which has been in operation since the facility was built. It operates at a key stage of Logan’s production process and the end user was very specific about the functionality and durability required. The order was placed in April 2014 with installation slated for five days during a shutdown in April 2015. Beavers added: “The whole process has taken around two years, starting with site visits to take measurements and get a visual impression of the best possible crane we could provide. We are thrilled to be approaching installation of a crane that we know will provide a state-of-the-art material handling solution. I have been working with a great crane crew at Logan, led by supervisors who know their requirements and the demands placed upon their lifting equipment.” The final stages of the process will be testing and operator training. Beavers anticipates that this will include six representatives from Logan Aluminum and involve sessions both onsite and at Ace World Companies in Fort Worth, Texas where the manufacturer has a test tower enabling it to complete a full factory runout test on the crane. He said: “Logan visited our facility in the early stages of the process and were impressed by our manufacturing capabilities. We look forward to welcoming them back to complete what has been a rewarding and satisfying job for us and one that we can use to further advance our growing reputation in North America’s most demanding and specialized industries.” Ace World Companies www.aceworldcompanies.com

Industry News Straightpoint Director Raises Profile of Mr Loadlink Blog Straightpoint will relaunch the Mr Loadlink blog later this month (January) as author and company director David Ayling positions the load cell manufacturer’s social media and other educational content at the forefront of its marketing strategy. The force measurement, load monitoring and suspended weighing load cell manufacturer continues to raise its profile across the globe with recent success stories emerging from North America, where it has a subsidiary set for 30% annual growth; Saudi Arabia, where local partner Al Najm Al Thaqib Est. is now among Straightpoint’s top 10 global distributors; and North Africa, where dealer EMH France reported unprecedented interest in the product range at a recent trade show. Ayling attributes much of this success to the industry’s growing trust in the product range and the company’s ability to engage on a personal level with the distributors and end users that consume the equipment. The Mr Loadlink blog captures that ethos. “It started when I was reading another blog by a peer in the industry and felt that I could be more informative and educational whilst striking a more discursive tone,” he said. “My goal was to communicate to our distributors and end users with a view to connecting them and promoting conversations through my experiences around the world.” Ayling is tireless in his mission to make Straightpoint synonymous with the safe and accurate measuring of loads. He believes safety-driven innovation and evolution requires a personal touch, typified by the tone of his blog, to which he will add monthly posts this year as he visits customers, job sites and trade shows all over the world. “People want to engage with people, especially when discussions are related to the sale and use of safety-critical equipment,” he said. “One of the key components of our success is getting our products in front of potential or existing distributors and end users so they can see and feel the equipment. They can look you in the eye and shake your hand. Obviously it isn’t possible to be in every corner of the world at once but the blog promotes that personal touch under a mantra of community.” Ayling explained: “I’ve always had a theory of, and belief in, abundance. I don’t buy into the concept that being secret and holding information is power. There is enough work for all of us and I’m not concerned about what our competitors are doing; we do have an eye on the competition but the blog in itself is very light-hearted and promotes the sharing of information and experiences.” Ayling is one of very few lifting equipment industry leaders who believes in the power and importance of social media. Many companies in the sector have a limited presence, while others add responsibility for posting to Twitter, for example, to someone already burdened with other tasks. At Straightpoint, Ayling blogs and posts himself giving the industry a unique window on his world. “I embrace the blog and social media whole-heartedly; I’m not going through the motions,” he said. “There is a difference between people who participate at this level and those who are less dedicated. When you go to an event, the social media community has a head start as we’re networking and promoting before the event has even begun. The blog is very much part of that ongoing engagement.” Ayling added: “The beauty of the blog and social media is that it’s a level playing field. It doesn’t matter how small you are as a company, you have access to the same scope of opportunity. We’re better at communicating and networking than companies much larger than us which is hugely rewarding and satisfying.” Straightpoint www.straightpoint.com

Industry News Texas Crane Service Company Utilizes Straightpoint Load Cells Texas-based lifting and rigging company Laguna Crane Services has used Straightpoint force measurement, load monitoring and suspended weighing load cells on a variety of projects from small industrial applications to those involving large mobile and crawler cranes with multiple chain falls. Laguna provides training, inspection, service and parts for many different lifting and moving technologies. Jerry Lopez, the owner of the business, has charted the development of load cells over the past decade and believes Straightpoint is at the pinnacle of technological advancement, which now gives customers the ability to monitor the pick points of dynamic loads while they are being moved and relay the information 100% wirelessly to a PC. Lopez said: “We started using load cells about 10 years ago; they were all hard-wired back then. The wireless capability has made it much safer, while data logging has made the process look very professional; it’s a massive improvement on the system which used to record information on a small paper roll. I especially like the capability of being able to capture a pull or load test on a graph as proof for the customers and their records.” Laguna Crane Services utilizes this dynamic capability to verify the weight of the components it uses for load tests and also employs load cells in proof testing. In many cases it is too expensive or logistically challenging to transport weights to a job site so a load cell is used in

conjunction with a crane to verify the weight of a component that a customer might have in their own yard. Other industries place different demands on Straightpoint’s portfolio; for example, drilling companies use an abundance of components, all of which need to be weighed and marked so it is clear when they are applied as part of an application. Lopez said: “On one standout application we rigged up the load cells on each corner of a drilling rig and used them to monitor the pull on each end while we skidded the rig over several feet. Using this method saved the driller a significant amount of money because they didn’t have to disassemble the rig—just disconnect it, move any obstacles safely out of the way and skid the whole rig derrick before hooking everything back up and drilling again.” Laguna Crane Services could soon have a local Straightpoint facility to support its work with John Molidor, the general manager of the U.S. operation, acknowledging that Houston is the undisputed leader in domestic and international business. He added: “The city is also known as the ‘energy capital of the world’. Most of the industries we serve—oil and gas, shipping, wind energy and construction to name a few—are domestically headquartered in Houston. Straightpoint www.straightpoint.com

interface with the pallet load, the truck offers an unobstructed view of the forks for simple pallet loading and unloading. This operator focused design helps the W45ZHD walkie pallet truck provide the greatest visibility in its class. Additionally, to improve productivity, the truck is available with Hyster Intelligent Lift™. This patented, innovative and industry exclusive feature allows operators to simultaneously transport and lift pallets, helping decrease cycle times by up to 25 percent. Trucks equipped with this technology can automatically lift the pallet to the maximum fork height without continually having to hold the lift button. Another industry exclusive feature unique to the walkie pallet truck is Hyster Intelligent Slow Down™. Utilizing a sensor, Intelligent Slow Down recognizes when the operator turns the truck during cornering and automatically reduces speed, assisting the operator through the corner. This feature gives the W45ZHD walkie pallet truck best-in-class stability, enabling the operator to maneuver with greater confidence. Hyster Company www.hyster.com

Industry News Overhead Lifting Equipment Case Studies to support end users’ buying decisions End users of lifting and moving technologies across North America’s industrial and manufacturing sectors will benefit from a range of case studies highlighting the advantages of choosing overhead lifting equipment for the material handling demands of their production processes. The case studies have been produced by the Overhead Alliance to promote the benefits of the overhead lifting solutions of three related industry groups of MHI (Material Handling Industry). These groups are the Hoist Manufacturers Institute (HMI), Monorail Manufacturers Association (MMA), and the Crane Manufacturers Association of America (CMAA). All three groups have become increasingly conscious that the information they produce is vital to end users and the Overhead Alliance serves as a vehicle that promotes that to industry through a variety of outreach campaigns. HMI members are the industry’s leading suppliers of hoisting equipment including hand chain hoists, ratchet lever hoists, trolleys, air chain hoists, air wire rope hoists, electric chain hoists, and electric wire hoists for the manufacturing and distribution sectors; MMA members produce the preponderance of patented and enclosed track underhung cranes and monorail systems; and CMAA members represent the industry leaders in the overhead crane industry. The products of their member companies represent a huge range of material handling solutions with benefits including a reduction of lifting related accidents; an overall improvement in workplace health and safety; less product damage; improved workflow; lower costs; and less impact on the environment. Rob Beightol, the chairperson of the Overhead Alliance’s marketing group, said: “Many times, users may not necessarily be considering overhead lifting as the primary solution to their particular problem. They

may be trying to ‘force’ an alternative product into action, but it may not be close to what is needed to do the job right. Case studies showcase the many ways that overhead lifting can solve issues at the user level. Once a user comes across a case study in their industry or close to the application that they are trying to address, they gain an understanding of the overall diversity of overhead lifting products.” The Overhead Alliance was formed in 2008 and will continue to inform and educate North America’s end users throughout 2015 with this range of case studies covering material handling in steel, aerospace, foundries and many more applications. The case study campaign will focus more on products and solutions than the brands behind them. Beightol explained: “The campaign is more about awareness. If the user sees the capabilities of the technology, then many times he or she will reach out to member companies for additional information. It is the job of the Overhead Alliance to keep the ‘solutions’ in front of the users, so that they take the next step in their search for systems or products that meet their needs.” He added that all member companies have micro-sites on the MHI website that users will visit once they are closing in on a solution for their particular application. “The many vehicles of the Overhead Alliance are aimed at promoting the technology of the industry. From there, a user or prospect visits the MHI website for more particulars. Finally, they click through to a members’ website and ideally find a match that satisfies their requirements,” he said. Creamers Corner

Sweep it right Michael R. Creamer

It is, of course, one of the most important contributions to the performance of the sweeper. Be it walk-behind, rider or large street sweeper, without it the sweeper does not perform. With the correct one it could sweep with astonishment. Give up? It is the main brush. There are many different materials used in the main broom. Manufacturers also use combinations that enhance performance, such as proex and wire instead of just proex or just wire. To further enhance performance, the rows of bristle are also very important. An example would be 8 DR (Double Row) of proex and wire combinations. Some manufacturers offer 16 DR (Double Row) or 5 TR (Triple Row). Every combination has its own application, which leads to my story of a client that I haven’t heard from in many years. After acquiring a management position, one of his responsibilities was the cleanliness of the entire corporation. Empowered with a Tennant 255 II Rider Sweeper, his task was to maintain the cleanliness of the building, an area of 150,000 square feet. The Tennant Model 255 II was built in approximately 1986 or 1987. This machine had some age on it; however, it was a very good sweeper in its day. Maintained properly and equipped with the proper brushes it could still perform very well indeed! I had some questions for Joe to answer to ensure the proper main broom was used for his application: How large of a building? Indoors only or outdoors also? Type of debris or combination of debris being picked up? Hours required to maintain the operation. In other words, how long do you sweep in a day or a week? What I faxed Joe was a list of the different materials of bristle for

Industry News New Order Processing System Introduced at Promat 2015 The new UltraBatch™ single and multiple line order processing work station allows organizations to increase operator throughput by up to 1/3, increasing accuracy and matching order profiles automatically. The UltraBatch work station can be integrated and configured to work with manual, semi-manual and fully automated goods-to-person inventory storage systems. In goods-to-person systems the work station is configured so SKUs/inventory is automatically presented to the operator at an ergonomic height (blue totes in the attached photo). Simultaneously totes or shipping containers are automatically staged at thigh height for filling of orders (red totes in the attached photo). Totes may be divided to support multiple orders or SKUs if cube allows. Integrated software presents the description, part number and photo of each item to be picked to assure accuracy. The screen also tells the operator how many items must be picked. The integrated pick to light displays tell the operator where

to place the picked items and the quantity for each location. For operations with a high concentration of single line orders, a consolidation process is employed. One ‘Put’ location is dedicated to single line orders. Each product tote is evaluated for opportunity single line picks when presented for other picks. If required the system will direct the operator to pick any single line order items from each tote as it is at the station for other picks. When a single line order tote is complete it is automatically released and routed to a deconsolidation / packing station. In fact, the entire system inducts, releases and introduces new totes and shipping containers automatically. The operator simply pushes a task complete button after each transaction is complete and lets the system do the rest. Highly efficient UltraBatch work stations are designed and implemented to match the inbound flow of goods. The compact nature of the work station eliminates virtually all walk and search time. Depending on throughput requirements, one UltraBatch work station can have access to tens of thousands of SKUs eliminating tremendous amounts of labor. The UltraBatch system can be implemented in new and existing order picking systems. Integrated Systems Designs www.ISDDD.com

Associated receives MHEDA’s MVP status

Safety campaign launching for underground utilities

Associated has been awarded the prestigious MVP (Most Valuable Partner) Status for 2015 in a program from the industry’s trade association, MHEDA (Material Handling Equipment Distributors Association). To be among the less than 5% of the association’s membership earning the award, Associated successfully demonstrated a commitment to business excellence, professionalism and good stewardship. This is the fourth consecutive year that Associated has been awarded MVP status. In order to receive this status they were required to provide evidence of their commitment to key stakeholders including customers, employees and suppliers. In addition they were evaluated on the quality of their industry and customer relations, peer-to-peer networking involvement, dedication to training for all employees and implementation business best practices.

Follow utility excavation best practices to help save lives and avoid property damage. That’s the underlying message of a new industry safety awareness and education campaign. The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) initiated the campaign as an industrywide collaborative effort to: • Promote best practices for jobsite preparation and equipment operation • Demonstrate underground utility installation and repair as safe, efficient and effective

Associated Solutions www.associated-solutions.com

The Underground Utility Damage Prevention Campaign seeks to: • Dispel common myths and negative perceptions associated with underground utility installation • Provide tools for improved worker skills, knowledge, and awareness Machinery covered includes horizontal directional drills, vacuum excavators, trenchers and related underground equipment. Industry News Dot Foods Selects IBS Dynaman to reduce costs International Business Systems (IBS announced that Dot Foods, the largest foodservice redistribution company in the U.S., has selected IBS Dynaman yard management system tools to reduce costs in its food supply chain. Dot Foods, a $5.5 billion company headquartered in Mt. Sterling, Ill., offers 105,000 products from 650 food industry manufacturers and delivers them in less-than-truckload quantities to distributors in all 50 states. It selected IBS Dynaman and its customized yard management application to meet the growing needs of its nine distribution centers. Unlike other companies, Dot Foods possesses a fleet that carries dry goods, frozen and refrigerated foods on the same truck. It also consolidates products from many suppliers into single deliveries to distributors. These unique approaches give distributors the advantage of having to make just single deliveries to restaurants in a given day, thereby reducing traffic and congestion, especially in urban areas. “Our expertise lies in our work supplying distributors with lessthan-truckload quantities so they can reduce inventory and increase turns,” said Troy Schenk, Warehouse Systems Manager at Dot Foods. “IBS is helping us realize new efficiencies with yard management tools that give us additional visibility into our operations and also reduce costs.” International Business Systems (IBS) www.ibs.net

Industry News Deadline extended for lithium battery ground shippers The US Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) extended the deadline for manufacturers, suppliers, and shippers to comply with new lithium battery ground transport regulations. The new deadline for shippers is August 7, 2015—six months beyond the original, recently passed deadline. The deadline extension provides the critical time needed for US lithium battery shippers to comply with wide-sweeping changes to the domestic ground transport regulations. Based on comments received from the regulated community, PHMSA will allow additional time for shippers to modify their hazmat shipping procedures to comply with the new lithium battery shipping rules. Note: The compliance date for lithium battery air shipments has not changed; new rules for air shipments are mandatory as of February 6 this year. Under PHMSA’s new lithium battery shipping rules, many packages previously excluded from the Hazardous Materials Regulations are now subject to specific package marking and hazard communication documentation standards. For example, any shipment of lithium batteries not contained in equipment will now require hazard markings and shipping papers. In the past, shipments of up to 12 “small” batteries (or 24 cells) qualified for relief from these regulations. Expert Training on New Lithium Battery Rules The 24/7 online course Shipping Lithium Batteries will prepare shipping managers and personnel for compliance with the latest rules for ground (49 CFR), air (IATA), and ocean (IMDG) transport, including new DOT and IATA regulations. Available 24/7, the updated online course is a convenient way for shipping managers and employees to satisfy US DOT’s training requirement for hazmat employees involved in shipping lithium batteries. For live training presented by an expert instructor, Lion Technology will broadcast the Shipping Lithium Batteries Webinar on March 19. The two-hour webinar covers the latest rule changes for lithium battery shipments. Attendees get a copy of the presentation, expertly designed reference materials, and a Certificate of Achievement.
