Love your work

A

fter a Happy New Year, we slide right into St. Valentine’s Day. A day for love, happiness, and kindness – at work. Plenty of research shows, if an employee feels valued and appreciated, they’ll be more satisfied with their job, and generally be more productive, engaged and loyal. But what may not be so evident is simply offering raises won’t make a happy workforce. Positive feedback, on a personal level, can be much more gratifying, especially for the long-term. Of course, good benefits are an important to employees, but don’t necessarily lead to happy employees. For managers and companies, it’s definitely worthwhile to make an enjoyable workplace. Besides helping the bottom line, no one wants to work in a negative environment. Below are some ideas for encouraging happiness at work. Be transparent Employees want to know the truth about the state of the company. and be informed about issues that affect it. According to a 2013 employee engagement survey, by TINYpulse, a company that monitors employee satisfaction, the number one contributor to employee happiness is transparency.

The good news is that the cost of improving transparency is almost zero. It just involves an ongoing dialogue between leaders and employees. At TVH, a yearly “State of the Business” address is presented to all employees. It covers all aspects of the business highlighting market trends, achievement on goals, and areas of future focus. Also, during the year, there are many opportunities to meet with the executives to ask pointed questions about the business. A bi-monthly newsletter is also published to inform employees of company happenings. Make employees part of the big picture Employees want to make a difference through their work and be assured it has meaning. Having the opportunity to make a contribution and help the company to its goals makes for more engaged employees. Clear and open communications on company happenings, department direction, and individual expectations can make a big difference in how an employee approaches the workload. Being part of the “big picture” helps employees to put more meaning into their work and not just go through the motions.

Each year, clear goals are laid out for TVH as a company and for the individual departments – each contributing to the overall success of the business. The goals are monitored monthly and reported to the Executives who track progress and report back to employees. The goals and progress are publically posted so employees can see them at any time. Recognize and reward employees Studies from several different employment research groups concluded that recognition is a high motivator for employees, and that even small rewards add up to happier employees. Employees like to know if they take a risk and work outside the box, their efforts and hard work will be recognized. TVH recognizes and rewards employees in a variety of ways such as service awards for tenure, attendance awards, and achievement rewards. Birthday cards and thank you notes are routinely given and several departments even have their own systems of recognition.

Gaining insight from the workforce can create a more positive and productive work environment. In the past, TVH used suggestion boxes for employees. Now TVH is implementing an exciting “Idea Program”. “In the Idea Program, employees will submit their ideas, track their ideas through a review and testing process, be involved in implementation, and be recognized for their contributions to TVH,” explains Dmitri Kekos, 2-year employee and member of the Idea Program. TVH also conducts formal surveys and then uses the results to shape the employee experience. Knowing input is taken seriously shows employees that their ideas and comments are important. These are just a few ways to help spread the company love during the month of hearts. If you’d like to learn more about these programs, or any other wellness programs, at your workplace, contact Bonnie at bonnie.steer@tvh.com for more information.

Ask employees for their input As simple as it sounds, some companies just assume employees will voice ideas and suggestions. But often employees don’t have an outlet for their thoughts or they don’t think their boss has time for them.

Textron Specialized Vehicles acquires Douglas Equipment

T

he Textron Specialized Vehicles group of Textron Inc., through Textron Ground Support Equipment UK Limited, has acquired the Douglas Equipment business from Curtiss-Wright Flow Control (UK) Limited, a subsidiary of Curtiss-Wright Corporation. Douglas Equipment is a manufacturer of ground support equipment (GSE) in the aviation industry, based in Cheltenham, England, UK. Going forward, Douglas Equipment will operate as part of Textron Specialized Vehicles’ companies’ GSE business, which also includes TUG Technologies Corp., a leading manufacturer of ground support equipment based in Kennesaw, Ga. Douglas Equipment is a strong fit for the Textron Specialized Vehicles group, as Douglas’ specialization in towbarless and conventional aircraft tractors and runway friction measurement systems complements TUG Technologies’ leadership in baggage and tow tractors, pushbacks, belt loaders, ground power units, airstarts, and mobile HVAC units. Douglas will continue to operate from its UK facilities in Cheltenham and Poyle, United Kingdom with its workforce of

more than 90 employees intact. The Douglas brand will join the Textron Specialized Vehicles companies’ stable of brands alongside TUG™, E-Z-GO®, Cushman®, and Bad Boy® Buggies. “We are excited to welcome Douglas to the Textron Specialized Vehicles family and to our ground support equipment business,” said Kevin Holleran, president of the Textron Specialized Vehicles group of Textron Inc. “The acquisition of Douglas and its unique brand and products, only a few months after our acquisition of TUG last spring, demonstrates our commitment to the GSE industry and our many customers.” “Douglas brings to the Textron Specialized Vehicles group a strong European base, pioneering product lines, and a proven track record in the GSE industry,” said Stefaan Ver Eecke, vice president and general manager, GSE for Textron Specialized Vehicles. “Those advantages, combined with Textron’s resources and operational expertise, make for an exciting future to help accelerate our growth and expansion in the GSE sector.” www.textron.com

Foam Speed Ahead!

A

ll machinery or equipment requires proper maintenance to ensure its reliability to perform properly. With all mobile equipment there is a certain group of items that coincide with one another. A prime example would be IC engines, whether it be GM, Ford, Caterpillar, it matters not, they all require maintenance and all are in different types of equipment. With sweepers and scrubbers, the maintenance line items are nothing like other equipment. With a sweeper, a typical list of maintenance would be as follows: 1. Of course the engine (we talk about that) 2. Hopper skirts and rubber seals 3. Hopper panel filters 4. Hydraulic vacuum fan motor 5. Main and side brushes 6. Vacuum hoses 7. Multi-environmental tires.

With a scrubber, many items in addition to the sweeper also applied except let’s add: 1. Squeegees 2. Recovery and Solution system tanks 3. Multi-environmental tires (such as nonskid ”WET” tires. I really want to pick-up on the specialty tire theme for this article. Because recently I received an e-mail in regards to tires performance and general maintenance / replacement of said tires. Especially the drive tire, I am experience many problems and expense. The e-mail goes on to detail that his Nilfisk/Advance Model 2060 sweeper is having a lot of problems with flat tires. He continues that the tire assembly even though is costly, the maintenance and down-time is killing him too. Of course my first question is what. What flat tire? Why a flat tire? Why are

you using air /pneumatic tires? Yes, you experience the occasional flat tire. Does this problem go deeper I ask? Yes, this is or has become a difficult problem. My people will only use an air tire. I heard of a solid rubber tire, but the tire does not give as an air tire. The Sweeper they tell me doesn’t sweep as well, missing spots. This is costing me a fortune. Can you help me please? Yes, of course, I will try to help. My first response to you is “Have you ever heard of foam-fil tires? His answer was no, I haven’t. This is what I can do for you. Let’s order a pneumatic tire assembly for your sweeper. When it comes in, I will have it foam filled. This is a process by which foam is compress into the tire through the valve stem. The foam expands in the tire and becomes “solid like”. Three to five days is usually required for this foam to completely

solidify. You can actually drive a nail into the tire without worries; ie; no flat tire. The advantage here is that you maintain the cushion effect of an air tire. So in the end all parties will be satisfied. Your people get that cushion feel. The sweeper should sweep more consistently over rough surfaces. And your expenses go away. No worries. Foam Speed ahead! Thanks for reading. If you have a sweeper / scrubber issue that needs to be rectified, e-mail me: creamerscorner@ hi-gear.com and I’ll try to help.

Schneider Packaging exhibits Robox palletizer and case sealer

S

chneider Packaging Equipment Co., Inc. will exhibit two of its most portable solutions, the Robox palletizer and the SR5000WAT case sealer, at Automate 2015, McCormick Place, Chicago, Booth #626.

Schneider’s portable robotic palletizer, the Robox, features FANUC’s new M-20ia/35, a light payload handling robot with a cable-integrated arm for a simple, economical and portable robotic palletizing solution for fluctuating production demands. Capable of picking and packing, assembling, and loading, the robotic palletizer¹s long arm can pack pallets up to 70². It easily fits into small hand palletizing spaces, making palletizing portable to where you need it. The highly rigid arm and advanced servo technology enable increased acceleration performance. This decreases cycle time; leading to higher productivity. Flexibility is built in to simplify the handling of multiple SKUs, often without the need for mechanical changeover. The SR5000WAT brings the benefits of water activated tape to case sealing using a servo driven sensing head to measure box heights and dramatically increase case throughput. Water activated tape is tamper evident, stronger sealing and recyclable. The water activated sealant actually penetrates the cardboard substrate and bonds to paper fibers making the most secure seal available on the market today. The SR5000WAT automatically indexes random size cases from a powered infeed conveyor, folds all top flaps and applies recyclable, pilfer resistant water activated tape to the top and bottom of the case. Designed for 24 hour/7 day duty, the SR5000WAT seals up to 25 cases per minute with perfect application, adhesion and cut every time, no operator required. Safety features include complete interlocked safety guarding and low tape roll supply detectors for quick, easy changes. Built in modular steel construction with heavy duty, corrosion resistant, aluminum components, it is light weight and allows for easy component changes.

T

Unlike loose fork extensions, the MANUAL KOOI-REACHFORKS® are always available when needed. This means no time is wasted locating and fitting the forks. The operator simply releases a fingertip locking mechanism and slides them out to the extended length. The outer fork sleeve moves easily with minimal physical effort. Since no manual lifting is involved, there is reduced risk of employee injury and costly workers compensation claims. The innovative Manual Extendable KOOI-REACHFORKS® complement forklift trucks by adding increased operational flexibility for the end user. They’re also ideal for rental fleets as a single set of forks can cover various fork length requirements. MSE-Forks also produces the world renown hydraulic telescopic KOOI-REACHFORKS® and is ranked as the global market leader telescopic forks. MSE-Forks also produces a wide range of pallet-less handling solutions as well as various other innovative forklift attachments.

ProAdjust automatically adjusts changeovers

P

roAdjust®, an innovative add-on solution that automatically adjusts the change-over points of most machines, will be on display at Automate 2015, Booth #1182. ProAdjust makes changeovers fast, accurate and repeatable on virtually any machine that requires changeovers. Developed and supported by ProAdjust Engineers, ProAdjust improves a machine’s overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) lowers costs, and is compatible with most machinery in every industry that requires parts to be changed over. ProAdjust is a self-contained system consisting of a controller and integrated Power Packs that provide the motion. The system is specifically designed to meet the requirements of an automatic adjustment system while being easy to install. The system is scalable from one to hundreds of adjustment points. Wiring is plug-andgo, and most importantly, no programming is required. ProAdjust uses a simple point and click touch screen interface for one-time machine setup and features an easy setup for creating and editing Œrecipes. The ProAdjust integration is completed on-site and requires no middleware or manual adjustments to achieve consistent, precisely aligned, automatic adjustments of machine change-over points. This results in increased throughput, while eliminating excessive changeover time, resulting in wasted production time and product. For example, a secondary packaging machine designed with 14 points of adjustment will take on average 28 minutes to changeover to accommodate a new case size. ProAdjust is able to cut changeover time to less than three minutes, resulting in a payback of just four months for the end user.

FB Chain to demonstrate wear gauge at ProMat 2015

T

hroughout its 30-year history, British chain manufacturer and supplier FB Chain has been a key driver for quality and safety in the industry – its product specialists helping to review and set new ISO standards as representatives on the BSI (British Standards Institute) technical committee. And this dedication to excellence does not end when each length of material handling chain leaves the warehouse – it continues throughout the chain’s service life. FB Chain’s loyal customers have come to see the company not just as a supplier

but as a source of valuable advice on the correct specification, tension and lubrication for each individual application. One of the most frequent enquiries the company receives is the best way to measure wear – an essential part of any lifting equipment inspection. If a chain has elongated by as little as 3% due to wear, it is neither safe nor legal and could break at any time. Yet many service technicians struggle to carry out this safety-critical task with a sufficient level of accuracy. The steel or tape rules traditionally used to measure wear are difficult to line up and hold steady. And seeing as the measurements involved are so small – 0.25% wear is only 1/32nd of an inch over 12 inches – even a slight misalignment can have a significant impact on the result. Moreover, once a technician has managed to take an accurate reading, he or she still needs to perform some arithmetic to convert the increase in length into percentage wear. “The more complicated the process, the more room for error – which is why we designed our own wear measurement tool that can be used by anyone, quickly

and confidently,” says Bradley Pyne, leaf chain aftermarket specialist at FB Chain. “Our patented wear gauge is the only tool of its kind available and is now widely considered the industry standard for leaf chain wear measurement.” Fool-proof solution To use the FB Professional Chain Wear Gauge, a service technician simply needs to set the nominal pitch of the chain and measure over the number of pins displayed on the front of the tool. The V-jaws ensure the tool is correctly positioned (similar to a vernier calliper but without the weight), allowing it to accurately compare the chain’s actual length to the nominal pitch length and calculate the percentage wear. This figure is shown in 0.25% wear increments from 0 to 4% worn with a red warning box appearing at 2%. The FB Professional Wear Gauge – which is now used by service technicians around the world – will be the star of the company’s booth at the upcoming ProMat show in Chicago, where visitors will be able to test its speed and simplicity for themselves.

“The high degree of accuracy removes the risk of chain remaining in service when dangerously worn – or being replaced prematurely, leading to unnecessary costs,” Pyne says. “What’s more, its simplicity encourages routine service checks to be completed without fail, while the ‘how much worn’ feature allows for accurate scheduling of servicing and replacements. All these benefits help increase the overall uptime of lifting equipment.” The FB Professional Chain Wear Gauge is suitable for measuring wear on all leaf chains from 3/8 to 3 inch pitch. It comes with a protective case and a set of comprehensive instructions detailing how to determine the nominal pitch of a chain and the correct measurement procedure. “This innovative and well-designed service tool has enabled customers worldwide to improve the safety and uptime of their lifting equipment. This is the message we will be bringing to ProMat 2015,” Pyne concludes. FB Chain’s representatives will also be available to discuss the company’s wide range of leaf, roller and conveyor chains, each with quality, consistency and traceability guaranteed.

Marathon Data Systems announces new Reloading and Time-Windowed Traffic

M

arathon Data Systems, a leading provider of Software-as-a Service (SaaS) solutions for the field service and transportation and logistics industries, today announced the addition of the Reload and Time-Windowed Traffic features to Viamente Route Planner. The new features enable Marathon to provide additional solutions for users in the transportation and logistics industry, eliminating issues that plague their service routes and businesses. The Viamente Reload feature enables resource optimization by calculating load capacities and incorporating return reload trips into their routes. Users can include up to three types of load capacities: weight, volume and cost. Viamente Route Planner will automatically utilize each truck, loading it to full capacity while respecting and maintaining set limits. This feature significantly improves the routing process for the wholesale distribution, large appliance delivery, manufacturing industries, and others that

I

must reload trucks throughout the day. Time-Windowed Traffic assists the Viamente Route Planner in providing more accurate arrival times by setting up time-dependent traffic profiles. Previously, users set up traffic profiles for specific regions without designated times for peak traffic volume; with this new feature, users can now create two time windows, that will allow for variable traffic volume within a region into consideration while building routes. “Marathon Data Systems designs every feature of Viamente Route Planner with the specific needs of our customers in mind, addressing the pain points they deal with daily,” said Chris Sullens, CEO and president of Marathon Data Systems. “The additions of the Reload and Time-Windowed Traffic features will help reduce unnecessary bottlenecks for our transportation and logistics customers, creating an overall more efficient operation and daily productivity.” www.marathondata.com

am in need for some legal assistance. No, Not bail money. A little “Final Will” tweaking.

Like many such services, the yellow pages and a simple Google Search doesn’t cut it. I was looking for a personal referral from a friend I could trust. I got it. I called this referred” lawyer, who was very well respected, admired and highly respected. And then it happened. “Lawyer’s Office.” Lawyer’s Office? Now that made me feel both welcome and comfortable right from the giddy-up. “Lawyer’s Office?” Give me a break. I thought of two rebuttals: (1) Hey lady, you need some professional work when it comes to greeting your next pay check. (2) Is this an answering service? I chose option two, and was totally caught off guard when she said, “No, this is the lawyer’s actual office.” (Nuts. I knew I should have gone with option #1.) Well, instead of having a field day with this person I politely asked that her boss

give me a return phone call since I do have a need to legalize this document. Today’s Message: 1. Train your people to answer the phone properly. 2. Make sure that you are doing it right. 3. Remember that the person answering the phone has total control of the call. Don’t screw it up like this lady tried to do without even knowing it. (She is busy, over-worked and I imagine under-paid.) Join the club. A day does not pass when I am reminded of how good, honest, well-intentioned people just don’t get it. By what definition you might ask. By my definition. I can’t cite the quoter, but never a truer phrase has ever ben muttered; “Defend your weaknesses … and they are yours.” Ladies and gentlemen, answer the phone with a little personality … like you are actually glad that somebody thought enough of you to take the time to call you.

Westfalia Technologies launches Savanna.NET® WES

Brady releases new catalog

estfalia Technologies, Inc. announces the launch of its Savanna.NET® Warehouse Execution System (WES). A unique warehousing software solution, Savanna.NET®, combines a tightly integrated warehouse management system (WMS) and warehouse control system (WCS) into a single application to help manufacturers and distributors direct, control and optimize internal material flow and order picking.

ger emphasis on using software applications to more efficiently run warehouse operations. Yet, the use of interdependent WMS and WCS applications has actually proven less efficient, as it increases the complexity of transaction processing and requires complicated integrations. A WES is a key to overcome these challenges by helping users streamline all warehousing activities through a single application and position themselves for future growth.”

With the flexibility to operate as a standalone software solution or with any automated storage and retrieval system (AS/ RS) – not only Westfalia’s own AS/RS – the Savanna.NET® WES simplifies and controls the entire warehousing process, while reducing the complexity of using several different “function-specific” applications. As a result, users can more efficiently utilize warehouse space and equipment, increase order accuracy, improve customer service, reduce the risk of lost or damaged product, and raise throughput and productivity.

Savanna.NET® offers users the functionality necessary to efficiently receive, store and track product, as well as optimally marry inventory to customer orders using the solution’s integrated order fulfillment processing capabilities. When an order is to be fulfilled, Savanna.NET® processes that order into units of work. Using the Savanna.NET® solution’s integrated WCS functionality, the application directs either automated material handling equipment or manual labor to execute the work. Inventory tracking also occurs seamlessly utilizing the software’s WMS components. In addition, Savanna.NET® has the flexibility for a variety of deployment options, ensuring that users receive the WES solution that best meets their needs. www.WestfaliaUSA.com

ne of the largest challenges of the engine remanufacturing business is often associated with improper engine installation. We all know that everyone reads all of the literature that comes with each reman engine – right? Even after reading all of the paperwork technicians still seem to find creative ways to damage the engines performance and longevity. Enough humor – this article will discuss basic diesel engine installation and how you can prevent premature engine failures.

P Clean the air filter housing and hoses. Check for cracks and for proper sealing of the air filter. P Flush or replace the oil cooler if applicable. Ideally you should replace the oil cooler because it is difficult to be sure that all oil contaminates are removed. P Recore or replace the radiator & test. P Replace the oil pressure sending unit. P Adjust the clutch to the proper free pedal before starting. P Check the crankshaft end play before and after installing the transmission.

Proper Diesel Engine Installation

Imagine the most beautiful remanufactured diesel engine that you have ever seen arrive at your dock in a crate that is packaged to perfection. A technician unwraps the engine and sets it on the ground that is covered in oil dry. He takes the gasket box and sets it on an oily workbench where he was just machining a steer axle. So much excitement – he gets the intake manifold that was laying next to the glass bead machine and gets ready to prep the engine for install. The old oil and fuel filters were just replaced on a PM fifteen hours before the engine failed so the technician decides to re-use them. It’s a shame to throw them away they still have life left in them. All that’s left is the can of dirty offroad diesel that will be poured into the fuel tank with a funnel that was laying on the floor covered with oil dry. She’s ready to fire! Hopefully you understand the shop humor - but sometimes this is not far from the truth. Here is a list of critical installation points. Remember that this is a list of basics and intended to be used as a guide.

Tech Talk

P Check to ensure that the engine’s application is correct prior to bolting on accessories. Bolt patterns on the block and crankshaft flange, crank shaft snout, PTO setup, oil galley and freeze plugs, oil pan configuration, etc. P Clean both manifolds and check for cracks and warpage when applicable. Do not overtorque. Do not glass bead! P Clean and flush the fuel filer housing and lines. Dirty fuel/components can instantly clog the fuel injectors and cause black smoke on startup. P Check fuel lines from tank to pump for cracks or crimps. P Check transfer or lift pump for proper pressure if not supplied by your remanufacturer. P Replace all air, fuel, oil and crankcase filters.

It is up to the technician to prevent thrust bearing failures. Excessive main bearing thrust wear can be caused by the following: • Clutch not adjusted properly • Pilot shaft or torque converter interference with the crankshaft • Blockage and/or restriction of the transmission oil cooler P Replace the belts, hoses and motor mounts. P Service and inspect the starter, alternator, etc. P Install and properly torque flywheel bolts. Over torquing can distort the crankshaft flange on one piece rear main seal designs. Do not use an impact. P Upon startup NEVER use engine starting fluid. Check oil pressure and coolant flow in the radiator. If oil pressure is not found in ten seconds of startup stop the engine and inspect the oiling system. P Prior to starting the engine - follow the procedures outlined in the engine’s service manual to prime the fuel system. Operating the injection pump dry can cause pump failure. P Bleed all of the air out of the fuel system by cracking the injector lines. P Run the engine at throttle and at no load until it reaches operating temperature. P Verify that no leaks are present and that the cooling system is working properly. P Runaround and load test the unit. P After the engine has heat cycled check the valve lash and re-torque the cylinder head bolts if practical. P Finish assembly of the truck and it’s ready to ship Don’t ruin that ReMaN. Follow these simple steps and you will have quicker and more profitable diesel engine installations. afety Supply Illinois, a national distributor of safety products, announces that it has completed its company name change to Emergent Safety Supply, effective immediately. This new name signifies another important milestone of the corporate reorganization strategy as the company looks to acquire new businesses for growth opportunity across the country. “We are focused on becoming a large national player and potentially going global with products. The name change was imminent because we distribute products beyond Illinois. We have a national footprint,” said Chief Executive Officer, Mary Porter. Emergent Safety Supply (ESS) is a leader in distributing safety and janitorial supplies, which include hand protection, hearing protection, eyewear, head protection, confined space, fall protection, signage and much more. Their mission is to help customers save lives, reduce liability risks and create a socially responsible reputation for putting employee safety as a corporate priority. When Porter purchased the company in 2012, she had a powerful vision and saw a market of opportunity. Despite the mountain of new challenges, she transformed the organization into a fast-growing multimillion-dollar company by streamlining business technology and tightening the supply chain. The streamlined approach reduced their carbon footprint and created a paperless system, identified and eliminated process bottlenecks, improved transparency with customers, shipped safety products to customers faster and implemented employee OSHA training and product knowledge programs. Porter and her team tripled warehouse space to stock more supplies and purchased multiple vans to provide same-day delivery on in-stock items. In addition, ESS reorganized the company’s customer relations division to concentrate on customer needs, which subsequently drove innovation and decision making of new products and services.

ESS sets itself apart from competitors because their learning culture embraces change, their team orientation values diversity of ideas and their commitment to excellence drives organizational passion. This type of culture allows ESS to actively listen to customer needs and suggestions, implement process improvement solutions and supports continuous training of sales/operations staff in product and industry knowledge. Furthermore, employees at ESS stay abreast of constantly changing rules and regulations provided by OSHA through their rigorous training and certification in fall protection, confined space and OSHA regulations. “It’s important for us to stay on top of OSHA rules and regulations, so we can pass information to our customers in terms of what’s coming down the regulatory pike and offer safety solutions to mitigate customer and employee exposure,” says Porter. CEO Mary Porter is seeking new acquisitions and increasing profits by building and maintaining strong relationships with customers. “We’re going to stay on course in terms of getting new customers and competing. Our next major drive is to complete an acquisition.” A pioneer in a male-dominated field, Mary Porter brings a true entrepreneurial passion to the industry. As a certified Women Business Enterprise, ESS places great importance on diversity and commitment to fostering partnerships and relationships with women in the workplace. “This certification really allows us to expand our customer base to companies and vendors that want to work with WBE certified businesses. Women working with women and other minorities, helping each other and encouraging each other, are very important to me,” said Porter.

WWL Vehicle Services Americas acquires Carlogistics

W

allenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL), the global shipping and logistics provider, has expanded its Mexico operations with the acquisition of integrated logistics provider Carlogistics. WWL Vehicle Services Americas (WWL VSA) is now the largest provider of vehicle processing for automotive manufacturers in Mexico. The expansion adds two facilities and nearly 100 employees to WWL’s vast auto logistics network in Mexico. Processing centers in Cuautitlan (just North of Mexico City) and near Veracruz (the largest auto port in North America) will cater to the integrated logistics needs of car manufacturers in preparation for export and domestic consumption. Key services at the facilities include vehicle processing, body shop work and storage, as well as supply chain and distribution management (including rail and

truck loading/unloading). “Expanding its scope of operations and continuing to invest in Mexico allows WWL Vehicle Services Americas to deliver top quality, reliable services to car manufacturers in an important high-demand, fast-growing market,” says John Felitto, President & CEO of WWL Vehicle Services Americas, Inc. WWL VSA’s network in Mexico now includes a total of nine vehicle processing centers based at both auto plants and standalone processing locations, and an ocean transportation service that connects auto manufacturers to the United States, Europe, Middle East and rest of the world. The network’s annual throughput in Mexico is 1.6 million cars and it maintains a workforce of approximately 1,100 employees. www.2wglobal.com

ELFA announces top 10 equipment acquisition trends for 2015

T

he Equipment Leasing and Finance Association (ELFA) which represents the $903 billion equipment finance sector, today revealed its Top 10 Equipment Acquisition Trends for 2015. Given U.S. businesses, nonprofits and government agencies will spend nearly $1.5 trillion in capital goods or fixed business investment (including software) this year, financing a majority of those assets, these trends impact a significant portion of the U.S. economy. Businesses will find opportunities presented by a steadily improving economy and favorable credit conditions as they make their decisions for equipment replacement and expansion. ELFA President and CEO William G. Sutton, CAE, said, “Equipment financing is a critical source of funding for a majority of U.S. businesses, allowing them to acquire the equipment they need to operate and grow. It enables equipment acquisition, which plays a critical role in driving the supply chains across all U.S. manufacturing and service sectors. To assist businesses in planning their acquisition strategies, we have distilled recent research data, including the Equipment Leasing &

Finance Foundation’s 2015 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook Report, industry participants’ expertise and member input from ELFA meetings and conferences to provide our best insight for the Top 10 Equipment Acquisition Trends for 2015.” ELFA forecasts the following Top 10 Equipment Acquisition Trends for 2015: 1. I nvestment in equipment and software will reach an all-time high in 2015. As the U.S. economy continues to improve, business investment is forecast to reach a record $1.484 trillion in 2015. As business investment grows, demand for equipment financing will increase. 2. B usinesses will invest in equipment not just to replace aging assets, but also to aid in expansion. The pent-up replacement demand that has driven equipment investment in previous years may be supplemented by long-awaited expansion investment as capacity utilization rates in some industries reach or surpass levels

historically known to spur business investment. Industries poised for investment growth include oil and gas extraction and transportation equipment manufacturing. 3. While some equipment types will see strong growth, others will moderate. In 2014, equipment and software investment increased 9.6% in Q2 and 9.3% in Q3. Looking ahead, growth in equipment and software investment is expected to moderate somewhat, as it is unlikely to keep up the strong pace seen in Q2 and Q3. A still healthy growth rate of 6% is forecast for 2015. Aircraft, trucks and other industrial equipment are projected to be among the higher growth types, while agriculture, computers and software are expected to see slower growth. 4. Improving market conditions will continue to increase credit supply and demand for equipment acquisitions. As the economy steadily improves and business confidence continues to increase, credit standards should modestly loosen. The propensity to finance decreased in the wake of the financial crisis as businesses deleveraged and refrained from new business investment. Since bottoming out in 2010, the rate at which businesses finance their capital spending has grown consistently and will continue to increase in 2015 with steady economic recovery and shifts in Federal Reserve policy. 5. Eyes will be on short-term interest rate increases. Expectations for the Federal Reserve to raise short-term interest rates in 2015 should spur equipment investment as businesses seek to lock in equipment financing at lower rates. Despite rate increases, businesses will find that a highly competitive “buyer’s market” will continue to make financing an attractive option for acquiring equipment. 6. Businesses will use financing for a majority of their plant, equipment and software expenditures. In 2015, 62 percent or $922 billion of investment in plant, equipment and software in the United States is expected to be financed through loans, leases and lines of credit. A majority of businesses—seven out of 10—will use at least one form of financing to acquire equipment.

7. Advances in the use of technology will drive innovative financing options. Equipment finance providers are streamlining their business processes and improving customer self-service capabilities using digital technologies. At the same time, some end-users are moving away from traditional equipment consumption models and toward hosted or managed services based on usage rather than total ownership. To meet customer demand and address evolving technology equipment requirements, equipment finance companies will tailor innovative financial offerings. 8. Several “wild cards” could impact equipment acquisition decisions. In what could be a breakout year for the U.S. economy, positive and negative external risks could affect equipment investment. Potential political gridlock, global economic weakness and geopolitical risks could be a drag on investment decisions, but GDP growth from low oil prices, a potential surge in the housing sector and sufficient capacity utilization could have firms ramping up capital expenditures. 9. Nontraditional financing will continue to grow and play a larger role in the equipment finance industry. As regulatory scrutiny increases and some banks’ lending standards tighten for certain credits, nontraditional financing sources, such as investment bankers, venture capitalists, insurance companies, crowd funders and others, are exploring opportunities in the equipment finance sector. 10. A final lease accounting standard will be released. The Financial Accounting Standards Board and the International Accounting Standards Board continue to work on the lease accounting project, which will change how leases are accounted for on corporate balance sheets. A final standard is anticipated in 2015, with a possible effective date of 2018 or later. The good news is that the benefits of leasing equipment will remain intact despite the lease accounting proposal. www.elfaonline.org.

Safety Corner Ten forklift operator training requirements

T

he most frequently asked question that Forklift Safety Training Services receives in their office on a daily basis is, “What do we need to do to become OSHA compliant?” Contrary to the many confused interpretations that we hear, our answer is simple and by the book as defined by the OSHA Federal Regulation 29CFR1910.178, paragraph L, “Operator training.” 1. It is THE employer’s responsibility to train, test, evaluate and authorize every one of their forklift operator’s. 2. Training and evaluation(s) are the employer’s responsibility, regardless of previous experience or prior training. 3. All training must be site and equipment specific. 4. Driving evaluation tests must be completed and filed for each forklift operator for every forklift that they operate

to include loaners, rentals or any new or used forklift’s acquired. 5. OSHA clearly states; “Certification. The EMPLOYER shall certify that each operator has been trained and evaluated as required by this paragraph L.” 6. The employer is certifying to OSHA that they are in compliance with OSHA’s training requirements and that every operator has been trained, tested, evaluated and authorized. 7. Forklift operators are not certified, they are authorized. 8. Daily Safety Inspection Report forms must be filled out on every forklift at the beginning of every shift. 9. Training shall consist of a complete video review of the entire OSHA Federal Regulation 29CFR1910.178, powered industrial trucks, operator

workbook, pre-shift safety inspections, written test and driving evaluation test(s). After each operator has successfully completed OSHA’s training requirements and for those forklift operator’s that can demonstrate safe driving skills and practices on a daily basis, authorization cards and certificates of completion can be issued by the employer to the forklift operator(s). 10. From a liability standpoint, we recommend that the employer takes two hours every year to re-certify their forklift operators by providing classroom instruction and driving evaluations. Forklift operator safety training does not need to be boring or lengthy. Our simple to present and easy to understand OSHA compliant training materials require a two-hour classroom instruction which is video-based instruction that is interactive with the operator’s handbook. A 15-min-

ute safety meeting that OSHA refers to as a “lunch box” session does not qualify or meet the OSHA training standard for forklift operator training. Good record keeping of your training and testing materials is imperative in the event of an OSHA audit or demand is made in the event of a liability lawsuit. FORKLIFTSAFETY.COM is the “nation’s leader” with one of the most informative websites relating to forklift operator safety and training. Banner Engineering introduces new light series

Keypad graphics look embossed without the cost

Banner Engineering introduces its EZ-LIGHT® K90 Series multicolor indicator lights. Featuring a large, 90-mm indicator housing, the K90 Series delivers extremely bright and uniform illumination from all directions and at longer distances, while a highly visible illuminated dome ensures easy-to-see operator guidance. The K90 Series indicators provide enhanced flexibility with up to five colors—green, red, yellow, blue and white—available in one device. Available in two models, operators can select from the K90TL, which alternates between colors when multiple inputs are active, or the K90L, which has an auxiliary input line for flashing an active input.

Custom manufactured keypad graphics that feature imagery which looks like embossing to provide the clear, visual indication of active keys are being introduced by Nameplates For Industry, Inc. of New Bedford, Massachusetts. NFi Keypad Graphic Overlays feature detailed dimensional imagery that looks like real embossing and provides a clear, visual indication of active key areas without embossed keys and the cost of tooling. Ideally suited for a variety of applications, these keypads can be made from polycarbonate or polyester, laminated underneath to prevent machine induced abrasion, and can include spacer backings, zoned adhesives, and EMI/RFI shielding.
