Grip... Grab... & Go!

High Traction When Rubber isn’t quite right, and Polyurethane isn’t right, Tmax is just right. Tmax has a higher load capacity than rubber and will provide better traction in cold, damp environments than a stanstan dard polyurethane tire. Indoor and outdoor application tough will not pick up debris and is non-marking.

appy 2015! And isn’t happiness the key? It’s no secret that happy people are more productive and just plain better to be around. Even being close to someone that’s happy, makes us feel better. In fact, Professor Nicholas Christakis from Harvard Medical School and Professor James Fowler from the University of California, San Diego, studied more than 5,000 people and found that happiness is partly dependent on the mood of those near to you – the attitude of those in close proximity does have an effect on you. We spend a good part of our day at work and work can be stressful. Being happier requires controlling those stress levels and creating a healthy work environment. As we spend so much time with our work friends, it’s important to be happy to help the balance our lives. You can spread happiness at work in a lot of ways. It might take a little practice, but remember, happiness is infectious and it might as well start with you. During the year at TVH, we have several opportunities to grow as leaders and people. Below are a few of the concepts learned throughout the year that helps us be happier and healthier. Focus on the Motivations for Your Actions

you. This is called active listening and takes some time to master. Create a Winning Attitude Champions aren’t the ones who always win they are the ones who learn how to come back faster when they fall down. It’s easier to be negative than positive. Keeping a positive, glass-half-full outlook can do wonders. Although negative people may find this annoying, there is really no point in lamenting over each speed bump. Address the problem, fix it, and then shake it off. Respect and Trust Whether you’re talking to your customers, employees or the CEO of a multimillion-dollar company, treat all with dignity and respect. The happiest businesses are able to make each person feel unique and trusted, regardless of their status. Engage in Daily Tasks Live and work in the present. Engage with your work, co-workers and customers. Take part in the daily activities around your business. Focus on your daily tasks and set attainable daily goals for yourself.

Stop ‘going through the motions’ and put some feeling behind what you do. Keep in mind that your work and the work of those around you does matter. By placing a sense of weight and importance on your actions, the outcomes are much more satisfying and rewarding. Focus on the ‘why’; not the ‘what’.

Over winter storage

A

re you ready for another winter? With that being said, for those with outdoor sweepers I hope you have prepared them properly for the winter. What is that you say? Just drive to a garage and park it; don’t think so! You are doing this for a living this sweeper is your investment so let’s take care of it. First of all store it in an area that is dry and out of the way of being bothered. Secondly let’s jack this baby up and off of the ground. This is always a good idea because your tires will get flat spots on them. If you are running just air tires this may not be a problem but if you have foam-filled tires flat sport can be a big problem. A problem that will not go away. Once you get flat spots, that’s it. You’ll always be going down the road going “bump, bump bump…” 1. E mpty the hopper before packing up the machine. 2. J ack Up the machine at the designated location. Use a hoist or jack capable of supporting the weight of the machine. Use Jack stands to support the machine. The rear jack location is the center of the rear bumper behind the back tire. 3. Remove the battery completely. 4. I f your sweeper is gas open the garage door and run the machine. Run the machine until it is out of gasoline. You do not want to leave fuel in your system for an extended length of time. What happens, especially, with the new fuel additives they tend to eat away at seals and gaskets in your engine. And all of a sudden you

• ALSO SPECIALIZING IN BOBCAT WHEELS

5. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter. 6. Some people drain the radiator but I think it is not absolutely necessary. At this point I believe you are done preparing your machine for storage. The only other item would be the hydraulic system. As long as you have maintained the hydraulic system (i.e. regularly change the fluid and filters) on a schedule recommended by your OEM, you will be good to go. I have seen some technicians even remove the spark plugs and cover the holes with masking tape. I do not feel this is necessary, however, you will want to replace them in the opening of Spring. I think there’s no harm with this exception. For those not familiar with Tennant S20 Sweeper. Here’s a little history. This machine was introduced in 2011. It is Tennant’s Mid-Sized Sweeper with a hopper/ debris capacity of 750 lbs. The sweeping path is a total width of 62”. This includes the 50” Main broom. Reducing costs and downtime for vehicle scales

W

eighing problems can strike suddenly or persist over time. Either way, they are expensive. Faced with both types of problems, Littlejohn Grain found a simple solution to reduce maintenance costs and downtime for its vehicle scales. Littlejohn Grain is an agribusiness company that deals in corn, soybeans, and wheat. A family-owned business for four generations, it operates six grain-storage facilities throughout eastern Illinois. During the peak season, the scales at those facilities weigh about 500 trucks of grain per day.

Grain from local farms is delivered by truck to the storage facilities. At each facility, inbound trucks are weighed on a truck scale. After being unloaded, the trucks are weighed again to determine the net weight of the material they delivered. Ultimately, the grain will be shipped by rail to end users. The railroad scale at the Littlejohn Grain facility in Martinsville, Illinois, weighs as many as 30 trains annually. High maintenance Over the years, the railroad scale experienced frequent problems. Rodents gnawed through the load-cell cables, causing damage that shut down the scale. Each time a cable was damaged, the company had to replace both the cable and the load cell that was permanently connected to it. Combined with periodic lightning damage, the problem was so persistent that the facility began stocking replacement parts to minimize downtime. The cost of keeping the railroad scale operating was significant. In addition to repairs, the railroad charged the company demurrage fees of $10,000 per day for each train when the scale was out of service.

Upgrade solution To solve the problems, Littlejohn turned to Koenig Scale, the local METTLER TOLEDO distributor. Instead of continuing to replace damaged equipment, Koenig recommended upgrading the railroad scale with POWERCELL PDX load cells. These load cells use heavy-duty cables covered with braided stainless steel to resist rodent damage. For added protection, Koenig routed the cables through flexible metal conduit. If a cable is damaged, quick-locking connectors allow it to be replaced without the expense of purchasing a new load cell. Mechanical failure Shortly after the railroad scale was upgraded, disaster struck the Martinsville facility’s truck scale. This older mechanical scale had seemed to be working well until it collapsed into the scale pit when its extension lever broke. An inspection revealed cracks in the main lever and stands, making it apparent that trouble had been brewing for some time. The need to repair the scale was urgent. While the scale was down, trucks had to be rerouted to another facility to be

weighed and unloaded. Then the grain was shipped back to the Martinsville facility at additional cost. Saving time and money Again, Koenig Scale recommended POWERCELL PDX load cells. Converting the scale to POWERCELL PDX technology promised to save both time and money. Installing the new load cells was a quicker and less expensive job than repairing the broken lever system. Because a certificate of conformity already existed for the conversion kit, the facility was able to start weighing without the delay of requesting a variance from the State of Illinois. The new technology allows the facility to install a wireless remote display and proceed with plans to interface the scale to a personal computer for more efficient processing of weight data. The upgraded scales have performed well with no maintenance problems. “I’m guessing we’ll save $10,000 to $15,000 a year just from these two installations,” said Doug Littlejohn. “Of course, we have five other scales besides these that we may change over time.”

WIX® Filters installs automated shuttle storage and picking system at master distribution center

W

IX® Filters, a global manufacturer of filtration products, has implemented a “goods-to-person” picking strategy for its master distribution center (MDC) in Gastonia, N.C., based on a newly installed automated shuttle storage and picking system. The new system is an expandable, twoaisle Stingray Shuttle System that uses robotic shuttles to pick p roducts and fulfill orders for WIX’s automotive, agricultural, industrial and specialty filter customers. TGW Logistics Group, a global supplier of highly dynamic automated logistics solutions for warehousing, production, order picking and distribution, installed the system last summer. “The new system replaces a manual, labor intensive process that involved someone physically touching every single order,” said Robert Foy, operations manager for WIX’s master distribution center. “With this new technology, we have improved our on-time delivery, reduced fill errors and added fulfillment capacity to respond to new growth opportunities.”

A warehouse management system (WMS) controls the movement and storage of inventory at WIX’s master distribution center. Once the WMS determines an order has been placed for a quantity less than a case, it releases the order to the Stingray shuttle and picking system for fulfillment. The system includes two aisles of Stingray shuttles with Twister load handlers storing nearly 18,000 cartons and totes. In addition to the new shuttle system, WIX also installed an automated conveyor sortation system that connects the shuttle system to four ergonomically designed picking work stations that includes replenishment and pack stations. Greg Dillman, Senior Vice President for North American Operations for Affinia Group Inc., the parent company for WIX, said, “the new system is part of a global strategy to increase WIX’s product offerings.” “Capacity is the hallmark of the system,” said Dillman, who began his career at Affinia as distribution manager for WIX’s MDC. “We are already producing more

than 12,000 different product numbers and the automated shuttles will allow WIX to increase its product range in the years ahead. The new system also allows us to respond to changes in how the industry is placing orders. As a result, we are more efficient in fulfilling smaller, more frequent orders to better meet the needs of our customers.” The automated storage and retrieval system increases warehouse efficiency by reducing or eliminating manual warehouse operations, which enhances labor productivity, improves worker and product safety,

and achieves high inventory and order accuracy. Since installation, WIX has tripled productivity efficiency, optimized space utilization in the packaging of parts and improved customer satisfaction on orderfill efficiency. “These efficiencies are especially important for a distribution center that moves tens of millions pieces of inventory annually,” Foy said. “From national retailers to small business owners, customers prefer to reduce the amount of inventory they carry,” he added. “If they sell one filter, they want to reorder only the filter that was sold. The Stingray Shuttle System allows WIX to respond to customers’ inventory replacement needs, however small.”

Fact #3: Your marketplace has limitless boundaries. There is 7 billion people in the world (and counting) from which to target. If you don’t think people are moving around these days I want you to ask yourself a few questions:

Forklifts For Sale!

The good doctor said after passing the rolls at the dinner table,

1. Why are smart people continuing to build huge ocean-going hotels and more River Cruise ships?

“If you can’t make it in America, you can’t make it.”

2. Why are airlines cramming more seats into less real estate?

Those words stuck with me ever since.

3. Why can’t you find a parking space in Newark Airport’s Long Term Parking Lot?

That was over 20 years ago and I think of that sentence every time I present to a room full of travel professionals. With a little poetic license I now put a different spin on the same belief.

Become the Exception

“If you can’t make it in the travel business, you can’t make it in business.”

Fact #4: People today are fed up with the BS. They are looking for somebody who knows what they are talking about and who they can trust. The window of “opportunity” is wide open while your competition is whining and boring the marketplace to tears.

Now that I have your attention I will substantiate my thought process. How can I say this with the competition being what it is? Whether home-based or not, travel agents grow on trees — they are everywhere. The Internet makes it easy to book trips on one’s own. Suppliers are contacting travelers directly and doing end-runs. The Big Box Stores are cutting prices. Nobody wants to pay fees and commissions are going the way of a New York Mets win. And you are telling me if I can’t make it in this business there is something wrong with “me?” Explain!

My fellow entrepreneurs, both young and old, your problem is not the Internet, or the market, or the price of gas. Your problem is that you have not decided to “make it” yet. Your problem is that you are not comfortable with the rules of the game and you are not skilled yet at your position. You are not doing enough of what needs doing and in all probability, you are starting to pretend that your business is supposed to be easier than it is. In some cases, you may not even know what you need to do to become successful in the travel business.

Calm down and try to stay with me. First of all, try to forget all that mumbo-jumbo about big boxes, Internets, suppliers and charging for your labor. Focus on a few facts that will get you thinking straight. By “straight” I mean productively.

If you are interested in busting a few moves in your own personal “happy dance” perhaps it is time to sing a few bars from Michael Jackson’s famous ditty, The Man In The Mirror. “If you want to make your business a better place, than look in the mirror and make a change.”

Fact #1: You don’t have to buy anything. Excessive overhead is why most start-up companies eventually go out of business. You have zero inventory. You have no product or raw material investment. Your overhead is (and should be) extremely low. This is a major benefit for you. You cash easily control your expenses. Fact #2:: You have immediate access to all of the products, destinations and modes of locomotion that every single one of your competitors has. The “world” is absolutely and unequivocally at your finger tips. It is an even game board.

If two Russian immigrants came to America not knowing our language, and managed to serve a fine meal to a stranger in a beautifully appointed home in Chicago, than you too can make a go of it in the most fun, rewarding, and interesting industry our country has to offer. If you want some help, (and I know you didn’t ask,) send me an email at mike@ mikemarchev.com and I will show you what I can do for you. Maybe it is time to make a change. Business Profile

Load monitoring specialist Straightpoint settles into new U.S. facility

S

traightpoint Inc. is poised to achieve its growth potential having moved to a new facility in Camarillo, California, representing a significant dawn for the U.S. subsidiary of the load monitoring technology specialist. Five years after introducing its force measurement, load monitoring and suspended weighing load cell portfolio to the North American market, Straightpoint has raised its profile significantly and has recently welcomed three new members of staff. This is the company’s second Camarillo base, having relocated from nearby Ventura three years ago. John Molidor, the general manager of the U.S. operation, said, while the new location was chosen largely due to the practicalities of square footage, price and proximity to the previous location for ease of relocating inventory, the move has energized a business that director David Ayling, who is based out of Hampshire headquarters in the U.K., had already slated for 20-30% annual growth over the next five years. Molidor explained: “We have spent five years positioning ourselves in the marketplace and conducting a thorough analysis of the North American rigging industry. I am having conversations with Professional Engineers on a daily basis and we have a clear sense that the business has evolved to a point where we are entering a new phase of development. It is the dawn of an exciting new era for us and the new facility is very symbolic.”

He added: “The Camarillo property is dedicated to sales, marketing and distribution of Straightpoint products to North, Central and South America. It serves our rapidly growing customer base very efficiently. The large inventory and skilled staff allow same day order processing and in most cases same day dispatch.” Meanwhile, Molidor has highlighted three areas of focus for his leadership of the Camarillo operation. The first is educational in that he hopes to capitalize on the growing understanding in end user markets that there are fundamental differences between weighing and dynamic load monitoring. “Weighing and load monitoring are often perceived as being the same but they are very different,” he explained. “We provide equipment to businesses who simply have a need to know the weight of a concrete casting but monitoring the pick points of dynamic loads that weigh 400t while they are being moved is a different process altogether. It is important that we continue to differentiate between those capabilities to drive our growth. We can provide that dynamic information 100% wirelessly, straight to a PC.” The second focus is related to the perception that Straightpoint products are increasingly being used in high profile environments. Landmark or photogenic applications will be a ripe source for the increased rate of promotional campaigns that the business hopes to implement and Molidor will continue to strive for

increased participation with high profile clients such as NASA and Rolls Royce, for example. Finally, Molidor acknowledged that the ongoing success of the business will be underscored by growing market share. He said: “Straightpoint currently holds only a small fraction of the North American load monitoring market despite the fact that our product is so widely acclaimed for its capabilities. Looking at the bigger picture it’s true to say we are still relatively unknown; there is only one way we can go from here.”

Straightpoint, with two offices in the U.K. and one in the U.S., has been providing load cells to companies around the world to ensure their loads are safe to lift, offload, pull or push for over 35 years. Straightpoint Inc. is now five years old. Straightpoint’s products are currently being used within a wide range of industries such as oil and gas, shipping, construction, renewable energies, lifting and cranes, mining, staging, test and inspection, and military applications. Products are available to buy or hire. www.straightpoint.com

Ayling and Molidor make no secret of the fact that they hope to expand the business further to a more central location. Molidor said: “Houston is the undisputed leader in domestic and international business. The city is also known as the ‘energy capital of the world’. Most of the industries we serve—oil and gas, shipping, wind energy and construction to name a few—are domestically headquartered in Houston. There is no better location to serve the North American load monitoring market.”

NMHG donates $55,000 to United Way of Pitt County NMHG Marks Fifth Year of Supporting the United Way through ECU Athletics

T

hrough an affiliation with East Carolina University (ECU) athletics, NACCO Materials Handling Group (NMHG) has donated $55,000 to the United Way of Pitt County based on the number of ECU touchdowns scored throughout the 2014 football season. “NMHG is honored to make a donation to the United Way of Pitt County for each ECU touchdown—and with a strong

offense, the Pirates certainly did their part in helping NMHG achieve another successful donation,” said Chuck Pascarelli, President of Sales and Marketing, Americas, NMHG. “Beyond a great football season, we also look forward to basketball and baseball seasons, which will provide NMHG additional opportunities to partner with ECU and support our community through the United Way.” At the final regular season ECU home football game against the University of Central Florida (UCF) on December 4, NMHG presented the United Way of Pitt County with a check for $55,000 based on the number of touchdowns scored up to that point. NMHG’s Chuck Pascarelli along with Tina Goodwin, Vice President of Account Identification and Customer Data Management, pre-

ECU scored four additional touchdowns during Thursday night’s game, bringing the total NMHG contribution to $59,000. Winning eight games this season, ECU is slated to play in the 2014 Birmingham Bowl on January 3, in Birmingham, Ala., against the University of Florida. NMHG will also donate based on the number of ECU touchdowns completed during the bowl game. NMHG is beginning its fifth year in collaboration with ECU athletics to benefit the United Way and has donated more than $415,000 through the program to date.

W&H Systems client Southern Wine & Spirits opens new highly automated warehouse

W

&H Systems, Inc, a full-service integrator of material handling systems, announces the recent opening of Southern Wine & Spirits of America’s highly automated warehouse in Union City, CA. Developed in partnership with W&H Systems and Westfalia Technologies, the new facility houses four automated storage and retrieval (AS/RS) systems that refill pallets automatically. Southern Wine & Spirits of America president and CEO Wayne Chaplin said: “We’re always looking for innovative solutions to leverage world-class supply chain capabilities to reduce costs, deliver optimal fulfillments and provide tailored customer service. We tore down the existing Atlantic Street structure to invest in the development of this state-of-theart facility that will not only drive value for our trading partners, but also drive internal operational efficiencies that will allow Southern to remain competitive in this ever-changing and highly competitive wholesale environment.” “Southern Wine & Spirits of America chose to work with W&H Systems be-

cause of our extensive experience in the wine and spirits distribution market,” said Paul Laman, VP of W&H Systems. “We offer a comprehensive turnkey design and solution taking into account all of the operational factors. Our solutions include high-rate combiners and sorters, highspeed conveyors, our advanced WCS called Shiraz, AS/RS, pick modules and more. With 20 years of experience in the wine & spirits industry our solutions bring best practices and efficiencies to the distribution operations in order to improve fulfillment, throughput operations, and customer service levels.” At 334,000 square feet and 55 feet tall, the new facility can house more than 12,000 SKUs and 1.8 million cases. Atlantic Street is the first four-high in rack pick module the company has built. The AS/RS—built in collaboration with W&H Systems and Westfalia Technologies, Inc.—stores 24,750 pallets and is equipped for deep pallet storage—up to 10 pallets deep. Four storage and retrieval machines (SRM) refill pallets automatically and each SRM can process more than 80 pallets per hour each in and out. Additionally, Atlantic Street is

LEED Gold certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Dearborn Mid-West Co. launches material handling systems division

W

ith more than 65 years of conveyor systems expertise under its belt, Dearborn Mid-West Company (DMW) is expanding operations and capabilities with a new division in central New Jersey. The Material Handling Systems Division opened in April 2014. The new division is now fully operational, serving clients in a wide range of material handling applications, including the retail industry, where ecommerce and omni-channel distribution are the driving forces.

The leadership at DMW recognized and seized an opportunity to expand services beyond its conveyor systems manufacturing and integration capabilities in core markets like Automotive and Bulk Handling. With the acquisition of intellectual property—specifically, 24-Volt and GOH (GarmentOn-Hanger) Joe Colletti

conveyor systems—from an established material handling company in November 2013, DMW began to develop what would ultimately become its Material Handling Systems Division. The company began by testing the waters, surveying and assessing the existing market demands. DMW leadership engaged Joe Colletti as a business consultant, noting his 30 years of experience in the material handling industry. The company conducted extensive research to examine market needs, and then matched those requirements to its core competencies. This in-depth analysis and evaluation led the company to focus on turnkey material handling system solutions in three areas: Warehouses & Distribution Centers, Post & Parcel and Industrial. With Colletti’s expertise corresponding to these sectors perfectly, DMW tapped him to be president of the new division. The Material Handling Systems Division has the benefit of access to the talents and expertise of the engineers, project managers and installation technicians, as well as the manufacturing capabilities at DMW headquarters without being burdened by that overhead.

Eltex has operations in Sweden, Ireland and the U.S. The company will continue to invest in yarn supervision technology, whilst at the same time look to diversify its portfolio into new areas such as temperature measuring systems for food handling. This new partnership marks the conclusion of a competitive evaluation process that Eltex started two years ago, aiming to achieve one consolidated, global, integrated ERP system throughout the organization. Eltex will deploy IBS Enterprise and IBS Analytics across all businesses to address issues such as integration between different areas of the supply chain, reducing the amount of manual intervention and gaining transparency throughout enterprise-wide processes globally. IBS

will host the solution for Eltex in one of its dedicated data-centers, delivering a complete, reliable and robust solution on the IBS Cloud. Douglas Braun, CEO of IBS said, “We are delighted to announce this new partnership with Eltex of Sweden. 3 Tips for retiring out of state Financial Consultant Says a Little Planning Can Save Money

R

etirees flock to Florida and Arizona for year-round sunshine and golf, but all things considered, they’re not the best states for happy golden years, according to a new survey. Along with average number of sunny days, factor in cost of living, residents’ sense of well-being, quality of healthcare, crime and, yes, humidity, and the best destination is (surprise!) South Dakota, according to a 2014 Bankrate report. “As this report correctly suggests, preretirees need to consider a lot more than snow days and tradition,” says Rodger Friedman, founding partner and wealth manager at Steward Partners Global Advisory and author of “Forging Bonds of Steel,” (www.forgingbondsofsteel. com/), a guide to developing an excellent working relationship with your financial advisor. “Different states have different tax laws and other regulations that can have a major impact on your retirement funds.

You need to be aware of these as you plan for where you want to live and how you want to live.” Whether you’re considering one of the other top four “best states to retire” – Colorado, Utah, North Dakota and Wyoming, in that order – here are five tips for planning ahead: New state – new income tax rules. Get to know them! Familiarize yourself with the tax laws of the state you’re considering for your new home. Two of the top five on Bankrate’s list – South Dakota and Wyoming -- have no state income tax, along with five others: Nevada (No. 18 on the list), Texas (19), Washington (22), Florida (39), and Alaska (48.). Also, an itemized deduction in one state may not be an itemized deduction in another. If you use the long form (1040) to file federal income taxes, hire a reputable, experienced CPA for guidance. Look into how your new state taxes

retirement income. States differ on taxing interest income from tax-free municipal bonds. Some states give tax credits; treat public and private pensions differently; or offer federal, military or blanket exclusions. The following states are community property states: Idaho, New Mexico, Texas, California, Arizona, Wisconsin, Nevada, Louisiana, and Washington. Speaking with an estate planning attorney regarding how this issue may affect you may be money very well spent. If you’re married, are you moving to a community property state? There are nine community property states – those that divide all martiallyacquired assets and debt 50:50 in the event of divorce. (Exceptions include an inheritance or gift received by one spouse and maintained separately in that spouse’s name.) Community property states are Idaho, New Mexico, Texas, California, Arizona, Wisconsin, Nevada, Louisiana, and Washington. Speaking with an estate planning attorney regard-

ing how this issue may affect you may be money very well spent. Have a lawyer review your estate planning documents. Your existing estate planning documents should be reviewed by a lawyer in your new state of residence because statutes differ on the types of documents required and the powers bestowed upon each. For example, states are all over the map regarding the validity of a power of attorney document and the powers that may or may not be conveyed. “During their careers, their acquiring wealth years, many people live in places that have lots of jobs – and the higher cost of living that goes along with that,” Friedman says. “In retirement, many they want to move to a state where they can enjoy the same or an even better lifestyle with less money. “For that, it’s essential to consider not only the cost of living but the state laws that affect your accumulated wealth and income.”

Stertil-Koni names Robyn Collier warranty coordinator

Barcoding, Inc. offers open-architecture Key Management Solution

B

arcoding, Inc., a leader in enterprise-wide mobility solutions, is now offering an open-architecture Key Management Solution to provide users with greater flexibility and customization options for issuing and collecting keys more quickly and efficiently. Sold, deployed and supported by Barcoding, the CaptureTech Key Management Solution uses RFID (radio frequency identification) technology to provide businesses with greater organization, accountability, and security in their key management processes. The open-architecture Key Management Solution combines Gen2 compliant RFID seals, or KeyCops (which hold the keys), making it compatible with any standard reader. Therefore, the solution does not require a physical connection to the seal or an electronic cabinet. Now, users can

track keys in and out of buildings – not just in and out of cabinets – to extend the solution’s capabilities beyond the four walls. Plus, with the solution’s free, open-source software, users can further configure and customize their deployment and even add an electronic cabinet, if needed, later on down the road.

S

tertil-Koni, the leader in heavy duty vehicle lifting systems serving transit agencies, fleets, municipalities, public utilities and the U.S. Military, today announced that Robyn Collier has been named Warranty Coordinator, in addition to her current role as Receiving Manager.

Jay Steinmetz, president, Barcoding, Inc., said, “Typical key management systems require an electronic cabinet and leave little room for customization or expansion. This open-architecture Key Management Solution is the first of its kind, putting the power into the hands of the user to design a system that works best to make their business more efficient, accurate and connected.”

Collier, a nine-year veteran with StertilKoni, brings substantial hands-on product knowledge in addition to a dedicated customer focus to her expanded responsibilities with Stertil-Koni. Previously, she served with Stanley Black & Decker for more than 20 years, capping off her career there in a warehouse management position on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. In making today’s announcement, Stertil-Koni president, Dr. Jean DellAmore, stated, “Robyn has an extensive depth of experience working with Stertil-Koni products, distributors and customers. She is a true get-it-done professional and a very warm, customer-centric manager who consistently makes a significant contribution to our company’s growth and success.”

lug Power Inc. has restructured its’ brands, presenting the ReliOn division, a Plug Power company, under the larger powerhouse umbrella of Plug Power Inc. Plug Power acquired the Spokane, WA, corporation in April 2014, adding a talented employee base, valuable fuel cell stack technology and a stationary power fuel cell product offering to its portfolio. “Pulling the two groups together is a natural evolution for Plug Power as we grow and scale our business,” said Andy Marsh, CEO at Plug Power Inc. “We’ve operated as one company since April, and now it’s time we all share the same identity as Plug Power.” With this realignment, the ReliOn name will represent the product brand of Plug Power’s stationary power product line. Plug Power’s ReliOn fuel cell product is designed for the backup and grid-support power requirements of the telecom-

munications, transportation, utility and government sectors. For applications from under 50W to 20kW, Plug Power’s ReliOn solution replaces the majority of backup batteries and mitigates the need for backup generators. The ReliOn system is currently sold to customers in the United States, Europe, South America, Australia, Africa and Asia. Sales of the Plug Power ReliOn product will remain out of the Spokane, WA, office and will continue internationally. With the addition of the ReliOn product, the company can bring its turnkey GenKey solution to customers in the stationary fuel cell market, serving telecommunications, grid support, utility and government applications. GenKey combines the ReliOn fuel cells with GenFuel fueling and infrastructure and GenCare ongoing customer support.

Strength of supplier/distributor relationship key in solving customers’ protective packaging challenges

T

rust is an essential ingredient in building any successful business relationship. This is certainly true of the suppliers and distributors of protective packaging materials when trying to meet the needs of an end customer.

Gunter and Anglin also looked at Laminations VGuard® with adhesive but were concerned that the adhesive might damage the paint on the panels when it was removed. There was also added cost involved.

Laminations® has worked with Kyana Packaging & Industrial Supply in Louisville, Ky., for more than a decade. Kyana is a family-owned and operated business, known for its customer service and extensive stock of packaging and shipping supplies. The relationship between the two companies has grown and strengthened during this time as a result of Laminations’ ability to consistently deliver solid solutions. Trust is now a key part of what makes their relationship an ongoing success.

So Gunter contacted her Laminations account manager, Suzanne von Valtier, who provided her with a winning solution – Laminations UChannel®. Engineered to deliver precise three-sided edge protection, its single-piece construction can be formed into a wide variety of widths and lengths. It was the solution to WireCrafters’ problem. UChannel could be made to form fit around the width of the panels to protect the paint from scuffing. In addition, WireCrafters used offset leg 2x3 VBoard to help protect under the strapping and between the layers of wire panels.

“Laminations has great customer service, consistent quality and dependability,” said Melissa Gunter, packaging specialist with Kyana. “I always know that I can count on them to help me solve even the most unique problems that my customers are experiencing.” Putting it to the test Several years ago, Kyana faced a challenge that demonstrated how its strong relationship with Laminations played a key role in helping solve a customer’s shipping issue. One of Kyana’s customers, WireCrafters, a quality manufacturer of woven and welded wire partitions also based in Louisville, was looking for a proactive way to protect their new product – painted framed wire panels (modular systems) that are used for safety, security and separation – from marring during shipping.

Because WireCrafters had prior success using Laminations standard VBoard® , which was designed to be a corner and edge protector but is now used to solve a wide range of packaging problems, Gunter and Chad Anglin, Shipping/Cage Work Leader with WireCrafters thought they’d try it with the framed wire panels. For this application, Gunter and Anglin planned to place it between the banding and layers of panels to protect the painted surface; however, the VBoard pieces would sometimes fall out as the loads of panels shifted during transportation. This would leave the panels without protection.

“I was determined to find a solution for Melissa and for WireCrafters,” said von Valtier. “Kyana does such a terrific job of meeting the needs of its customers and I wasn’t about to let them down. Melissa trusts me, and ultimately Laminations, so it was important that I help them find a solution. UChannel seemed like a costeffective option that would meet all their needs.” “Knowing Laminations diligence and ability to problem-solve, I was confident we would find a better solution to WireCrafters’ packaging needs,” said Gunter. “After seeing their UChannel product, I knew we had found it.” Anglin agrees. “The UChannel is custom fit to the width of the frame so when it is put in place and strapped, the load stays tight and the UChannel keeps the frames from touching, preventing damage to the paint, “ he said. “That, combined with the VBoard, made a winning combination. It was an immediate improvement. We love the product for this application.” von Valtier couldn’t be happier with the solution, and with the relationship that has developed between her and Gunter. “One of our goals at Laminations is to make sure our distributors are successful because that’s what builds solid relationships,” she said. “It’s very important for me to get to know my distributors and their industry so I understand who their customers are. This enables me to be a trusted resource, to bring new ideas to the table. “So despite having some initial challenges in meeting Wirecrafters’ needs, it’s great to have a relationship where we could take the time to look at other solutions. Melissa came back to us because she trusted us to come up with a successful and cost-effective solution,” summed up von Valtier.

Awana taps Wynright to support global nonprofit organization’s latest DC expansion

W

ynright Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Daifuku Webb and a leading U.S.-based provider of intelligent material handling systems, today announced that Awana® Clubs International, a global, nonprofit organization, has again turned to Wynright for its latest expansion project. To enhance its distribution center workflow, Awana has incorporated six custom-designed steel packing tables built by Wynright Structural Solutions into its material handling system. The award-winning Structural Solutions team specializes in designing and building mezzanines and other steel support structures. Besides the packing tables, the project also calls for hundreds of feet of conveyor to interface with Awana’s three production lines at its 60,000-sq. ft. warehouse in Schaumburg, Ill. This current initiative is the latest in a 30year relationship between Wynright and Awana. Over that time span, Wynright has assisted Awana in re-engineering its warehouse operations, successfully meet its order fulfillment challenges, and

improve its materials handling processes. “Wynright has played a major role in helping us manage our growth as we entered new markets,” said Steve Hale, Awana’s Director of Distribution. “The company has taken a keen interest in our development, ensuring that we improve efficiencies and maximize available warehouse space – which requires developing a solid long-term plan and dividing the project into stages. Wynright isn’t pushing products. It’s providing smart, engineered solutions as our trusted, experienced partner.” Awana creates and distributes more than 2,200 products, which include religious educational materials, such as print and video curricula, uniforms and apparel, children’s games, motivational items, and, as such, ships as much as 3.2 million pieces each year. Recently, the company effectively doubled its volume by providing order-fulfillment services to other Christian nonprofit organizations, thereby creating a third-party logistics business.

“We’re grateful for our long-standing partnership with Awana and for the opportunity to work with a terrific organization,” said Don DeSimone, Director of Warehouse Equipment Sales at Wynright. “The company has honed its expertise in third-party logistics and supply chain best practices over decades to offer something never done before – being the

leading nonprofit 3PL in the market.” Wynright’s Warehouse Equipment Store not only offers a broad array of industrial and commercial supplies and equipment but also a high level of engineering support, experience and expert advice to help address tough storage, workflow and other material handling and supply chain issues.

Exercise your crisis decision-making skills By: Lucien Canton

O

n July 19, 1989 United Flight 232 crash landed at the airport in Sioux City, Iowa killing 111 of the 296 people on board. Many of those who survived owe their lives to a coordinated interagency response by the county. The outcome might have been much different. The Sioux City airport was not rated to handle the large jumbo jets such as Flight 232’s DC 10 aircraft. However, the county’s emergency services manager, Gary Brown, understood the strategic implications of the many flight paths that crisscrossed Sioux City airspace and anticipated that there might one day be a need to respond to an emergency involving large aircraft. Against much opposition, he exercised local responders and hospitals in dealing with mass casualties. This strategic thinking meant that county agencies and hospitals were ready to respond on that fateful summer’s day.

the individuals engaged in the tactical response. These are the people that comprise your incident management team who attempt to get ahead of the crisis and anticipate the short-term needs of the tactical responders. Finally, there is a strategic level, which normally consists of senior executives whose emphasis should be on the long-term impact of the crisis.

In any crisis situation, there are three levels of activity taking place. The most obvious is that at the tactical level where people are actually dealing with the immediate effects of the crisis. The operational level provides support to

But there may be an even more subtle reason for failing to think strategically: organizations tend to build exercises around operational issues rather than strategic ones. It is a cardinal rule of emergency planning that no plan can

Unfortunately, this strategic level is often neglected. One reason is that it is easier to solve problems than to make decisions. The problems created by a crisis are fairly tangible and the solutions are often obvious. It is easy for senior executives to be drawn into the relatively easy work of solving these tactical and operational level problems than it is to take a step back from the crisis and try to see the big picture.

executives thinking beyond the immediate and obvious event to identify the true crisis.

Consider the following example:

• What information will I need to make decisions? Understanding risk and the decisions that need to be taken generates a need for information. That information may be related to the organization or may require analysis of the operational environment and the local community. In some cases, the crisis management team can be used to collect this type of information.

A major fire has occurred at your principal manufacturing facility, severely limiting your ability to produce your key product. People working at the tactical level are busy clearing away debris and assessing the damage while the operational staff is considering options for regaining the capacity to produce product. In the typical exercise, senior executives are usually drawn into this operational level by being asked questions such as • What should we tell our customers? • Should we authorize over time? • Should we pay people who can’t work? • Should we ask a competitor for help? If we think about questions of this type, it soon becomes noticeable that many of them can be answered by asking for recommendations from the crisis management team or through existing company policies. In other words, they really do not require serious decisionmaking on the part of senior executives. In fact, they can lead to a mistrust of the ability of the crisis management team to deal with these issues. They also may fail to engage senior executives in the exercise.

be considered complete until it has been tested through exercise. Consequently, our exercises focus on solving operational problems using the organization’s emergency plan. This is completely appropriate but it does not truly prepare senior executives for crisis. Instead, these types of exercises focus the attention of senior executives on short-term issues that could, in most cases, be delegated to the crisis management team.

Visit www.jwwinco.com to see our line of these useful products.

To truly increase the ability of senior executives to make decisions in a crisis it is necessary to ask questions that truly challenge them. Using the same example, consider asking questions such as the following: • What is the true risk to the company that is posed by this crisis? In the example, the problem is not the loss of production capacity; the true crisis is what that loss of capacity represents. The true risk might be reputational; by failing to fulfill contracts the company develops a reputation as unreliable. The risk may be financial; failure to provide product on schedule could result in severe financial penalties. The reason for asking this question is to get senior

• What decisions will I need to make? With an understanding of the true crisis, it is now possible to identify strategic decisions that may need to be made. For example, does this crisis offer an opportunity to modernize production processes? Will the organization’s customer base or labor pool be affected and require changes to company strategies?

• How will I implement these decisions? There is an old saying that, “the devil is in the details”. Decisions that do not include some thought to implementation are doomed to failure. This is because thinking about implementation sometimes forces a re-examination of the decision. This is particularly true when resources are limited or information is not readily available. Thus, an important part of the decision-making process is to test decisions by making sure there are sufficient resources to implement them. Operational exercises are absolutely essential to good emergency planning and the participation of senior executives is critical. However, it is important to include senior executives not just as observers or by giving them work but by offering them opportunities to improve their crisis decision-making skills. A carefully crafted exercise will both engage them and help them understand their true role in crisis response.

Barcoding recognized on 2014 FL100+ List

arcoding, Inc., a leader in enterprise-wide mobility solutions, announces its inclusion on the 2014 FL100+ list, Food Logistics’ annual list of influential software and technology providers for the food and beverage industry. Food Logistics recognized Barcoding for excellence in designing, developing and implementing mobile and automated data capture technology that helps clients overcome food safety and traceability challenges while making their supply chains more efficient, accurate and connected. Shane Snyder, president, Barcoding, Inc., said, “With a growing number of industry and federal regulations, food and beverage companies are looking to automated data capture technology, like barcoding and RFID, to enable more efficient and accurate traceability throughout the supply chain. By creating a detailed chain of custody and reducing – if not eliminating – manual data entry along the way, these technologies are helping to mitigate recalls, maintain compliance, expedite product movement, and ultimately keep consumers healthy and safe.”

For more than a decade, the editors of Food Logistics have profiled software and technology providers that hold influential roles in the global food and beverage supply chain. Their products benefit the industry in multiple ways, from reducing food waste and extending shelf life, to facilitating safe and sanitary transportation of product while assuring regulatory compliance. “The impact of software and technology on the global food supply chain is truly profound,” said Lara L. Sowinski, editor-in-chief at Food Logistics. “Software solution providers, equipment manufacturers and numerous technology innovations are supporting growth in our industry while concurrently lowering operating costs, improving productivity and enhancing visibility from farm to fork.” The robust activity in the software and technology sector relative to the global food and beverage supply chain prompted Food Logistics to expand the list this year and rename it as the FL100+. Companies who earned a spot on the FL100+ list are featured in the November/December 2014 issue of Food Logistics, as well as online at www.foodlogistics.com.

Is it parts and service or parts vs. service?

O

ne of the most symbiotic relationships in your dealership is the one between your parts and service department. The cooperation between these groups is crucial and communication is key for the two to work effectively to service your customers. Yet there are still times where it seems like the parts and service departments are more in a battle against one another. We’re going to look at some things each department can do to work together rather than against one another.

brand of lift out there your parts department has its strength and weaknesses as well. If you’re working on competitive equipment it may be tougher for your parts department to get the information they need from their sources. Also establish an expectation for quoting, your service and parts manger should come together and agree on a reasonable time frame on quoting parts for service jobs, one suggestion might be one fixed time for equipment you represent and another time frame on competitive equipment.

The Service Department

The Parts Department

Undoubtedly there are members of the service department both technicians and support staff that have had something negative to say about parts. Those might include “I can’t believe they got that wrong I told them exactly what I needed.” Or “I gave them that quote 2 days ago why can’t they get it back to me.” There are a couple things to keep in mind when it comes to these negative comments, one it makes the entire dealership look bad, two maybe there is a root cause that contributed to the issue. Here’s one key thing when dealing with your parts department, information is king! We all know by now that the single best thing you can provide is Model and Serial number of the lift you are working on, but there is more to it than that. Are you working on the mast, a cylinder in the mast, an attachment, or the engine? If so did your technician get the information not only off the unit that they are servicing but also the information off the corresponding piece they are working on? Mast numbers and cylinder numbers are increasingly important to make sure that the proper parts are located, some brands don’t manufacture their own masts so getting these numbers are crucial to getting the right part. In the case of attachments most manufactures note that an attachment is on the unit but parts and service support come from the manufacture of the attachment not the manufacture of the lift truck. The more information you provide to your parts department the more accurate they can be. From the service management side are you training your technicians to capture this information? Do your technicians have to go back and get this information in order to get the right part? Training the technicians to get the right information the first time will be key to not only getting the right parts but also to better serve your customer. In regards to quoting jobs a lot of the same things apply as above communication and information is king. Keep in mind though just as your technicians can not be masters of every

Just as above there are also some negative grumblings about the service department that come from parts personnel. Just as above it creates a negative view not only inside but also outside of the organization. There are a couple things that parts needs to keep in mind, one your service department is your best customer, they are also your most captive customer. The other thing is, above all have some empathy. It is easy in parts to forget that the technicians that are calling in or in front of them at the counter are also the ones that are in front of the customer more than anyone. They are really the first line of defense for the dealership and see and get more grief at times especially when something goes wrong. So how can parts help the service department and foster a positive relationship. First off be transparent, if the technician you are working with doesn’t provide you the info you need make sure to ask for it. Make sure that when you’re pulling parts either for a job or for van replenishment that all those parts are marked with part numbers, this will make billing easier. Help the technician communicate info to the customer, this is especially crucial when it comes to recovery costs like freight. Make sure that you communicate to the technician what the options are to bring parts in and how much those options will cost. Don’t hesitate to offer add on parts for the technician, if they are ordering brake shoes as about associated parts like spring kits, wheel cylinders, and seals.Parts can also help in the training process for new and senior technicians by explaining, not telling, why certain pieces of information are so important.

odds then chances are the departments overall are going to be at odds. It is important for parts and service managers to work together to build a strong aftermarket effort for the dealership. First find some common ground, Parts gets about $.25 per dollar of labor billed which is great for the dealership and the parts revenue and profit number. For service having a parts department means that management of inventory and tracking down of parts is handled for you keep your technicians out there doing what they do best. Both Parts and Service Management should understand how important inventory on the vans is and how crucial billing out parts accurately is key to making sure items get returned to the technicians and keeping track of the inventory. Most importantly work together, it’s easy to remember you’re a profit center but a little give and take should be common place. Service will screw up but Parts will also screw up, work together to solve issues and when issues do come up don’t just point the finger at one another. Remember that Parts and Service Rework affect your dealership while you might be recovering your revenue you’re really just billing yourself.

It’s easy for both parts and service to forget that you’re working together to service your customer better. It’s important to keep in mind that attitude on both sides will make a big difference, technicians and counter people should not berate each other, and management should step in when big issues between personnel occur. Fostering that great relationship starts at the top your management needs to be the one championing the relationship between the two departments. Your goal should be to have the best dealership, not just the best Parts Department or Service Department.

Product Preview Introducing Colossus: Hamilton’s 200-ton toting casters

New large bore shaft collars J.W. WINCO revolving knobs for heavy-duty conveyors substitute for revolving from Stafford handles

Hamilton Caster is well known for making heavy duty industrial casters – and now, one of the biggest. Hamilton recently designed and built four 100,000-pound capacity casters for a federal contractor. Fully assembled, each caster towers 52 inches above the factory floor and weighs more than 8,000 pounds. Together, they represent Hamilton’s highest payload capacity ever: 200 tons. “Everything about this job was colossal,” said Ralph Stampfli, Hamilton Caster’s truck team leader. “From the springs to the ball bearings. We even had to use a 30-ton crane, 6,000-pound forklift and 3/8th-inch chain just to move it out of our factory.”

A line of large bore shaft collars and flange mounts for construction equipment, processing and mining conveyors, energy applications, and more are available from Stafford Manufacturing Corp. of Wilmington, Massachusetts. Stafford Large Bore Shaft Collars are designed for heavy-duty drive system applications and are offered in one- and two-piece clamp-type configurations with smooth round, square, hex, and threaded bores. Available in a variety of materials with bore sizes up to 12” I.D., these fully split collars can incorporate keyways and slots on the bore, tapped mounting holes, spanner wrench holes, and other features on the face or O.D.

J.W. Winco, Inc. announced it now offers GN 319.5 Revolving Ball Knobs, Long Shoulder Type, with Stainless Steel Tapped Shoulder, in inch and metric sizes. These RoHS-compliant revolving knobs can be utilized instead of revolving handles, i.e. with handwheels. The tapped shoulder allows the revolving ball knob to be mounted from the underside via a screw or bolt, which can then be easily mounted to sheet metal in a variety of thicknesses, flat bar, or castings, to create a quick cranking or turning mechanism.

All new Mustang 250Z compact excavator

Brady announces new GHS labels app for Brady Workstation

Powered walkie stacker has 3,000 capacity

The all-new Mustang 250Z compact excavator goes above and beyond the size class expectations with its groundbreaking performance features and technology. This new model incorporates innovative features that enhance productivity, operator comfort, efficiency and cost savings on the jobsite. This compact powerhouse brings 8 inches (203 mm) deeper dig depth and 8.3 inches (211 mm) additional reach at ground level compared to the previous model, the 270Z. The new 250Z is equipped with a 20.4 hp (15.2 kW) electronically-controlled Yanmar Tier IV emissionscertified diesel engine.

Brady released a new GHS Labels app as part of its Brady Workstation label-creation platform. This new app makes aligning with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) simpler by featuring easy uploading and storing of Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information, and label creation capabilities. The GHS Labels app was designed around SDS information. That means users can easily setup and maintain a chemical database by importing the SDS content for any chemical. Once this chemical information is setup, users simply pick a chemical, pick a size and print the needed labels.
