TVH Executives accept the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

VH in the Americas (TVH) has recently participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that has taken social media by storm this summer. TVH joined the cause to raise awareness and funds for the ALS Association. Many employees had already taken the plunge for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, and nominated the TVH Executive team to participate as well: the challenge was accepted!

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge dares nominees to be filmed while having a bucket of ice water poured on their heads. The participants must, in turn, nominate other people to take the challenge. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is raising awareness and research funds for ALS. Until a replacement can be found for Schemerhorn’s previous position, the Marketing department will report to Chuck Pascarelli, president, Sales and Marketing Americas for NMHG.

“Not only are big trucks emblematic of our brands, but given their high lifting capacity needs and complex operating environments, big trucks can also present the most challenging Brett Schemerhorn set of lift truck applications in the materials handling industry,” said Schemerhorn. “This new group is evidence of our company’s knowledge of and commitment to driving value and reducing operating costs for these critical market segments, and I welcome the opportunity this new role presents.”

“NMHG is certainly not new to the challenges of big truck applications, and everything we do, including the creation of this group, is designed to leverage our expertise to a greater degree for the benefit of our dealers and customers,” said Pascarelli. “Given his background, Brett knows not only the industry but is keenly aware of the needs and challenges customers face. He will make an excellent leader for this team, and we look forward to the positive impact he will have in creating a more focused, customer-centric approach to providing durable and trusted lift trucks.”

A driven leader and team-builder, Schemerhorn has nearly 20 years of experience in the materials handling industry. 4 Essentials Your Financial Advisor Should Have The Client-Advisor Relationship Must NOT Be Overlooked, Says Industry Veteran

S

hocking stats continue to make news regarding America’s preparedness for retirement, including the fact that one of five citizens near retirement age have zero money put away for the golden years, according to statistics recently released from the Federal Reserve. About 20 percent of pre-retirees have nothing stocked away, and 31 percent of the total population also has no money for retirement. “This issue is making news regularly, and financial planning for retirement advertisements have spiked in recent years, in case you haven’t noticed,” says Rodger Alan Friedman, author of “Forging Bonds of Steel,” (www.forgingbondsofsteel.com). “If nothing else, I hope the increased focus is lighting a fire under those who are near retirement, and I hope future generations are taking notes.”

Just as the average person needs to get real with their own finances, advisors also need to get real with their clients. That means having several traits, says Friedman, who reviews them. • Competence: When advisors are unsure of themselves, it comes through. When presented with a set of facts, new advisors may not recognize what they are dealing with, or its importance. A seasoned advisor, on the other hand, has dealt with many clients with numerous problems several times over and knows what it takes to solve a problem. That’s why I feel that an experienced financial advisor is the best answer for someone in need of retirement income and financial planning. • Empathy: What is a client going through? Advisors must have their antennae up. Tears, anger, regrets and frustration are often bound with a person’s finances, and “I have met very few 22-year-olds who can fully understand the struggles, worries and dreams most people experience throughout a lifetime,” he says. Advisors have to develop an approach that helps clients feel comfortable in discussing difficult matters. The client needs to understand that the advisor truly cares and is not there merely for a transaction. • Ability to listen: “ ‘You have to have two ears and one mouth,’ my mother used to say; she made it clear that I should be listening twice as much as I was talking, and that advice has served me well in my life and career,” Friedman says. Clients come to an advisor for professional expertise, but they don’t want to be lectured. Advisors have to first listen to clients – their problems, needs and hopes – before offering a professional response. The conversation should flow easily both ways as an advisor and client get to the heart of matters in an atmosphere of mutual respect. • Perspective & insight: Perspective and insight are like twins: wherever there is one, the other is not far behind. Planners gain perspective and insight through thousands of hours of listening, collaborating, advising and acting as a steward of the financial assets and dreams of the families they serve. You know when you’re in the presence of these “twins;” it is

often said that people with both see with their intellect – they possess vision. Clients should keep their antennae up for these traits when meeting a prospective advisor. Pay attention to how he or she may, as if without effort, intelligently guide the two-way conversation.

Adept Technology Introduces New Mobile Robot Localization Technology “Acuity” Feature Enables “Lynx” Mobile Vehicle Navigation in Extremely Dynamic Environments

A

dept Technology, Inc., a leading provider of intelligent robots, autonomous mobile robot solutions, and services, today announced that it has launched “Acuity,” a new patented, proprietary technology for its “Lynx” intelligent, autonomous mobile robots. Acuity is a breakthrough localization feature that allows Adept Lynx mobile robots to navigate in environments where the surroundings are extremely dynamic. “Adept’s Acuity technology takes Lynx mobile robot autonomous navigation to a new level,” said Terry Hannon, chief business development and strategy officer at Adept. “Acuity enables a Lynx vehicle to effectively operate in areas where features change dramatically. This is especially important in applications such as materials transport in busy, hightraffic warehouses where an autonomous robot’s navigation must allow for

half_pg_ad_outlines.indd 1

constant movement of people, pallets, carts and forklifts, and shelves being emptied and refilled.” Acuity is available to customers as a Lynx system option for use in the most demanding settings. Standard Lynx systems can already operate in environments where the surrounding features change up 80 percent. Acuity uses overhead static cues to pinpoint the robot’s location, allowing operation where the horizontal environment is even more dynamic. Applications range from work-inprogress (WIP) transport in busy manufacturing settings to materials handing in dynamic warehouses and operation in facilities with wide open spaces. “Adept Lynx mobile robots are providing customers with state-of-the-art performance in autonomous materials movement, encouraging faster, more dependable goods delivery and more

efficient facility operations,” said Hannon. “Adept’s Acuity feature boosts Lynx robots’ already exceptional navigational capabilities to an extraordinary level, broadening the opportunity for system deployment into an even greater number of settings. It’s yet another testament to Adept’s leadership in intelligent autonomous mobile vehicle technology.” Developed for rapid, reliable materials transport in a variety of industries, Lynx mobile robots feature the on-board intelligence to choose the best path to complete a task. Lynx systems require no facility modifications to deploy and simply run in conjunction with the user’s existing enterprise software. Lynx mobile robots work safely alongside personnel and are ideal for use in large manufacturing facilities, warehouses and distribution centers, and for “clean” wafer pod handling in the semiconductor industry.

Adept is a global, leading provider of intelligent robots, autonomous mobile robot solutions, and services that enable customers to achieve precision, speed, quality and productivity in their assembly, handling, packaging, testing, and logistical processes. With a comprehensive portfolio of high-performance motion controllers, application development software, vision-guidance technology and high-reliability robot mechanisms with autonomous capabilities, Adept provides specialized, cost-effective robotics systems and services to high-growth markets including medical, electronics, food and semiconductor; as well as to traditional industrial markets including machine tool automation and automotive components. New Brochure from Hänel Storage Systems Highlights Storage Options for the Disabled

H

änel Storage Systems has recently released a brochure entitled Hänel Office and Industrial Storage Carousels Adapted for use by the Disabled. This all-new brochure details how Hänel products can be used to make a more accessible and inclusive workplace. Hänel vertical carousels and vertical lift modules work on the “goods to the user” principal, eliminating the need to walk through shelves or climb ladders. This makes them a popular choice for users with physical limitations. Hänel offers a variety of options and modifications to extend accessibility to wheelchair users, the visually impaired and other unique requirements. Hänel Office and Industrial Storage Carousels Adapted for use by the Disabled outlines the options and modifications that are available from Hänel, and highlights several customer applications.

Developed in cooperation with the German association for self-help for the physically handicapped, the Hänel Rotomat ® Carousel can be equipped with a recess in the lower portion of the unit and a repositioned controller below the access opening. This allows full access for wheelchair users. The operating parameters of the Rotomat ® can also be customized to ensure full access. For instance, the resting position of the storage shelves can be tailored to accommodate the range of motion of different operators. The height of the access opening on any Hänel storage system can be customized as well, allowing for a lower point of entry. Hänel’s standard microprocessor control unit provides integrated inventory management and easy integration with various types of IT systems. This allows users with severe visual impairments to accurately manage inventory. Using a

Barbara did as she was asked and everybody seemed happy. Then, we came across another boot that appeared to offer the same style … which was selling for less than $100 … without any special discount. My point is simple. People buy what they perceive as value and that which satisfies their particular wants and desires. Some people, (many people) purchase products and services based on their own criteria. $100 vs $500. Same style. Same feel. Same look. But are they the same? For an extra 300 geeters I would like to believe that there actually is a difference between these two boots. (I am

Proper Diesel Engine Installation

O

ne of the largest challenges of the engine remanufacturing business is often associated with improper engine installation. We all know that everyone reads all of the literature that comes with each reman engine – right? Even after reading all of the paperwork technicians still seem to find creative ways to damage the engines performance and longevity. Enough humor – this article will discuss basic diesel engine installation and how you can prevent premature engine failures. Imagine the most beautiful remanufactured diesel engine that you have ever seen arrive at your dock in a crate that is packaged to perfection. A technician unwraps the engine and sets it on the ground that is covered in oil dry. He takes the gasket box and sets it on an oily workbench where he was just machining a steer axle. So much excitement – he gets the intake manifold that was laying next to the glass bead machine and gets ready to prep the engine for install. The old oil and fuel filters were just replaced on a PM fifteen hours before the engine failed so the technician decides to re-use them. It’s a shame to throw them away they still have life left in them. All that’s left is the can of dirty offroad diesel that will be poured into the fuel tank with a funnel that was laying on the floor covered with oil dry. She’s ready to fire! Hopefully you understand the shop humor - but sometimes this is not far from the truth. Here is a list of critical installation points. Remember that this is a list of basics and intended to be used as a guide.

get setup in a clean area with the engine specifications supplied by your remanufacturer. 3C heck to ensure that the engine’s application is correct prior to bolting on accessories. Bolt patterns on the block and crankshaft flange, crank shaft snout, PTO setup, oil galley and freeze plugs, oil pan configuration, etc. 3C lean both manifolds and check for cracks and warpage when applicable. Do not overtorque. Do not glass bead! 3C lean and flush the fuel filer housing and lines. Dirty fuel/components can instantly clog the fuel injectors and cause black smoke on startup. 3C heck fuel lines from tank to pump for cracks or crimps. 3C heck transfer or lift pump for proper pressure if not supplied by your remanufacturer. 3R eplace all air, fuel, oil and crankcase filters. 3C lean the air filter housing and hoses. Check for cracks and for proper sealing of the air filter.

3 F lush or replace the oil cooler if applicable. Ideally you should replace the oil cooler because it is difficult to be sure that all oil contaminates are removed. 3R ecore or replace the radiator and test. 3R eplace the oil pressure sending unit. 3 A djust the clutch to the proper free pedal before starting. 3C heck the crankshaft end play before and after installing the transmission. It is up to the technician to prevent thrust bearing failures. Excessive main bearing thrust wear can be caused by the following: • Clutch not adjusted properly • Pilot shaft or torque converter interference with the crankshaft • Blockage and/or restriction of the transmission oil cooler • Replace the belts, hoses and motor mounts. • Service and inspect the starter, alternator, etc.

3 I nstall and properly torque flywheel bolts. Over torquing can distort the crankshaft flange on one piece rear main seal designs. Do not use an impact. 3U pon startup NEVER use engine starting fluid. Check oil pressure and coolant flow in the radiator. If oil pressure is not found in ten seconds of startup stop the engine and inspect the oiling system. 3 P rior to starting the engine - follow the procedures outlined in the engine’s service manual to prime the fuel system. Operating the injection pump dry can cause pump failure. 3B leed all of the air out of the fuel system by cracking the injector lines. 3R un the engine at throttle and at no load until it reaches operating temperature. 3 V erify that no leaks are present and that the cooling system is working properly. 3R unaround and load test the unit. 3 A fter the engine has heat cycled check the valve lash and re-torque the cylinder head bolts if practical. 3 F inish assembly of the truck and it’s ready to ship Don’t ruin that ReMaN. Follow these simple steps and you will have quicker and more profitable diesel engine installations. Health Nudge

The Rewards of Giving: TVH Ice Bucket Challenge

P

eople are usually generous by nature, and having passion and fun behind a charitable cause can snowball into something great. Hence, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. There are several reports on how the challenge got started, you can google that yourself, but this feel-good campaign has surpassed any expectations of its humble beginnings. According to the ALS web page, as of August 29, a month after the challenge began, The ALS

Association has topped $100 million in donations. Last year at this time their donations were at $2.8 million. They’ve also added more than 450,000 new donors. ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is an awful, debilitating disease. It essentially triggers a slow paralysis by causing the nerve cells to stop working. From the time of diagnosis, most people live only two to five years. There’s no cure, and, more than 70 years after baseball star Lou Gehrig drew attention to the disease, scientists still don’t know what brings it on. The TVH executives, Els Thermote, Pat McLaughlin, Frank Carter and Dirk von Holt, accepted this challenge and got the employees excited and involved. TVH raffled off chances to dump the bucket of ice water on their favorite executive and all employees were invited to watch the activities on the front lawn. With TVH’s matching donation, more than $2,300 was donated to The ALS Association and four lucky employees had the honor of dumping the buckets on the executives.

TVH CEO, Els Thermote, accepting the ALS Ice Bucket challenge. All four TVH executives accepted the challenge.

During the raffle sales, employees were excited to help the cause and enjoyed the possibility to win a chance to dump a

bucket. There was much talk about who was going to win and how exactly they should dump the buckets. AJ Sidhu, 2-year employee, knew exactly who he wanted to dump the bucket on. “I wanted my executive boss, Pat McLaughlin,” he said. “Every time I heard someone bought a ticket for the chance to dump the bucket on Pat, I ended up buying two more tickets.” “I really wanted to win,” he continues. “I didn’t win, but it was really fun trash talking and planning out my victory. In the end, I was happy to donate to such a great cause and the few days leading up the actual drawing were a lot fun. “It’s great to know that all the TVH executives are willing to devote their time and money to such a worthy cause.” The concept of “charitable giving makes you feel good” is not revolutionary and studies have shown that charitable activities triggers a release of the feel good chemical, dopamine, in the brain. Giving can also improve your sense of wellbeing, increase your knowledge about a cause, and bring about sense of contentment.

Understanding Dimensional-Weight Pricing Written by: Leona Leslie, marketing manager for Mettler Toledo CargoScan

B

eginning in 2015, the United Parcel Service (UPS) will join its rival FedEx, in using dimensionalweight pricing for invoicing all domestically shipped parcels. Now, the industry is asking what this means for their businesses. Here, we explore the reasons behind the change, how it will be enforced and what transport companies can do to stay on top of the trend. Why Dimensional-Weight Pricing?

For the unfamiliar, parcel shipping and pricing can be perplexing. As dimensional-weight pricing continues to become the industry standard, it is more important than ever for parcel companies, distribution centers and even consumers to understand how it works. Dimensional-weight pricing sets the shipping price based on package volume rather than its actual weight. Dimensional-weight is a calculation of a theoretical weight of a package. This pricing scheme means fair billing for lightweight, low-density parcels that were traditionally unprofitable for carriers. It also allows shippers to stay in control of costs by declaring accurate dimension information for their shipments. Dimensional-weight pricing was first introduced by international air carriers to make efficient use of cargo space. The objective of such a pricing structure is to ensure that items are invoiced based on the space they occupy, not just their weight. The dimensional weight of an object is calculated by determining its cubic size and dividing this number by a dimensional factor. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) established a standard dimensional factor, however

companies regularly choose their own factor based on the average density of their shipments. Dimensional-weight is compared to actual weight and the greater of the two is used as billable weight. The recent move toward 100% dimensional-weight pricing for ground freight has come in response to rising fuel costs and an increased number of shipments thanks to online shopping trends, which have seen a decrease in package density in comparison to the package weight. That means that cost-per-package is more for carriers and they need to ensure they get paid properly for their service. According to a June 17, 2014 press release from UPS, “(dimensional-weight pricing) will reduce excess packaging materials and overall package sizes, leading to related reductions in fuel use, vehicle emissions and transportation costs.” UPS makes a good point. With these changes, it’s likely that shippers will condense their packaging as much as possible as well as reducing package sizes. That is good both for cost savings and also for the environment. On that note, fuel costs will also likely decline. The icing on the cake is accurate and fair billing and invoicing for the carrier. Impact on Shippers Warehouse logistics are also impacted by the dimensional-weight pricing changes. Because the declining density of shipments is increasing, vehicle-space requirements and the proportions of loads “cubing out rather than weighing out,” a growing number of carriers are

adopting billing practices that are based on the size of goods shipped and not just weight. In turn, package and pallet volume is becoming the new basis for calculating shipping costs. For warehouses that provide inaccurate measurements, this will result in increased and incorrect shipping costs.

as all data is captured in one process. The system can also provide sorting and tracking data that instructs the sorter to send the parcel to a specific destination. DWS solutions can be integrated into any sorting environment, no matter how complex, and offer maximum control throughout the entire process.

Warehouses are under increasing pressure to keep up with fast-changing customer demands. Not only has this amplified the need to reduce order-fulfillment times, but also the ability to effectively balance existing storage capacity against throughput, productivity and costs. Capturing dimension information by hand is labor-intensive, error-prone and expensive. In addition, fast-paced warehouses do not have the time to measure every item by hand.

Smaller operations won’t have a fully automated line or advanced sorting system but productivity can still be improved significantly with automatic measuring. Typically, stand-alone, static measuring solutions are used. Triggered by an operator using a hand held reader, the systems capture dimensions, weight and ID. Data is then sent to the IT system and an invoice is automatically generated. These systems can be easily integrated with label printers.

Technology to Determine Dimensional Weight

Specific to Carriers

The concept of dimensional-weight pricing always made sense to parcel carriers, but now technology has made it easier than ever to obtain quick, reliable and accurate measurements of large and small items. Gone are the days of manual measurements, thanks to advanced dimensioning technology ranging from hand-held dimensioners to automatic high-speed dimensioners. This technology can accurately measure a parcel and send those measurements directly to a host database. Studies have shown it takes 15-30 seconds to manually measure a parcel and record those measurements on paper, compared automated dimensioning technology that requires no additional manual measurements or efforts. This data is used for accurate billing without the chance for human errors. There is not a one-size-fits-all solution for automatic dimensioning as the processes themselves are often as unique as the businesses that use them. Determining the right solution starts with evaluating your throughput. Consider how many parcels are processed, volume during peak hours and potential volume if productivity were increased. For optimal productivity and lean operation on an automated conveyor line, a dynamic weighing, dimensioning and scanning (DWS) system is ideal. Automatic dimensioning can save companies time and money by ensuring accurate data is transmitted quickly and reliably every time. The system captures the dimensions, weight and ID of each parcel as it moves along a conveyor. This eliminates the need for additional handling,

This type of equipment is required to bill their customers properly and is essential for revenue recovery. Not only will they determine the billable weight by weighing and dimensioning shipments automatically, but they also will discover any discrepancies in measurements provided by the customer. If the customer who delivered the package in the example miscalculated the length, width and height by 1 millimeter, the billable weight could increase by another 14 percent after discovering the error with an automatic system. Extra revenue gained through this extra quality check is money that would otherwise have been lost. Specific to Shippers Companies need to make sure they are charging customers properly and protecting their revenue, while ensuring they are getting billed correctly. Shippers often don’t have the time or capability to provide accurate data and under-reporting of numbers is common. Measurements are typically done manually and are therefore prone to mistakes. Global Dimensioning Leaders METTLER TOLEDO Cargoscan developed the first dimensioning technology for the transport and logistics industry and introduced it to the market. With its global sales and service network, the world’s major carriers and shippers both trust METTLER TOLEDO for their automatic dimensioning needs. METTLER TOLEDO supports the entire marketplace with years of technology development and a breadth of market expertise.

S

o you say there is dust coming out from the rear of your sweeper. And, it’s pretty bad. The definition of “pretty bad” is different from personto-person. Let’s reiterate or redefine how badly. A cloud of dust is bad, yes, by any definition. These sorts of things build up over time and just do not occur overnight. Now, the question is this cloud of dust: i.e. is it coming out of the bottom rear near ground level of the sweeper or is it more the engine grill of the sweeper? You say both areas. Yes, both are bad (not good). You have a lot of work in front of you. However, do not fret, this can be resolved. By your description I know it is going to be all sweeper related and not the engine. Let’s get to work and help him get his sweeper back to protocol: First, the dust that is coming underneath the sweeper is all main broom chamber related. Let me explain. The main sweeping broom is attached to the machine width wise

and surrounded by a chamber of skirts. These skirts create a vacuum around the broom allowing the broom to sweep large and small debris without creating a lot of external dust. Without these skirts there would be no vacuum and a constant dust plume. As you can now understand, it is obvious the skirts need to be replaced. Usually, this is not a difficult task. There will be usually two skirts behind the main broom. These generally are held on with metal retainers. Remove these retainers and install the new skirts. You then reinstall the retainers. In some instances, the retainers need to be replaced so check this item before the skirts are ordered. You may need the retainers as well. The side skirts are usually replaced in the same manner. Just refer to your manual. I am going to wait to tell you what sweeper we are working on. It could be a Power Boss SW90 or it could be an Advance 6250. It also could be an American Lincoln 3366XP. But, it’s not.

We are now at the point to start addressing the dust cloud coming out of the engine grill. As I stated earlier it is not a problem with the engine. It’s the dust control vacuum system. A number of items could be affecting the ability to hold the dust in the hopper. Let’s go with a check list: 1. Make sure that the hopper is emptied on a regular basis. When the hopper is full the dust has to go somewhere. Just think about it. 2. Clean or replace the hopper filter. This filter works on the same principle as a furnace filter, so keep it replaced at least every 100 hours. 3. Lastly, check your vacuum motor fan assembly. This apparatus does all of the sucking and always at the top, or near the top, of the hopper. If this goes bad, it can create all kinds of problems. Dust control is one of those problems. This fan assembly could be belt driven or hydraulic driven. Again, refer to your owner’s manual.

Finally, the machine that we are having a dust control problem is the Tennant 6650 rider sweeper. But it could have been every one of the sweepers mentioned earlier in this article.

T

ransportation Insight has solidified its position as one of the nation’s fastest-growing and largest Enterprise Logistics Providers with its seventh consecutive appearance on the exclusive Inc. 500|5000 list of fastest-growing privately held companies in the United States. By appearing on the prestigious Inc. 500|5000 list seven straight years, Transportation Insight has been recognized as part of the Inc. 5000 Honor Roll, a designation for a select few companies who have been honored on the Inc. list for at least five years in a row. Only 388 of the 5000 companies on the 2014 Inc. list have been honorees among this elite group of prominent brands for seven years or more. Inc. Magazine ranked the Inc. 500|5000 according to percentage revenue growth when comparing 2010 to 2013. By achieving 149% sales growth since 2010, Transportation Insight is the largest Enterprise Logistics service provider, by gross revenue, on the list of highly successful companies. As an Enterprise Logistics Provider, Transportation Insight offers a robust portfolio of services including consultative and transactional end-to-end supply chain solutions encompassing domestic

transportation, international logistics and warehouse sourcing. Transportation Insight’s sustained rapid expansion is a particularly notable achievement for a company in its 15th year of doing business. Founded in 1999, Transportation Insight has been nationally recognized for its achievements in supply chain analytics, Insight Fusion ® Big Data solutions and Extended LEAN ® continuous improvement methodologies. The North Carolinabased company has thrived through several of the most challenging years in the American economy. Founder and Chairman Paul Thompson attributes the company’s continued expansion to client retention, new client acquisition and strategic investments. “Through sluggish economic conditions, we have maintained our investment strategy in human capital and innovative technology, and we are seeing the results of staying that course,” Thompson says. “We pride ourselves on our ability to help our clients to continuously improve their operations and grow faster than the economy.” Transportation Insight President and CEO Chris Baltz says the company’s

inclusion in the Inc. 5000 for a seventh straight year is a direct result of strategic partnerships with forward-thinking clients. “Given the complexity of the global marketplace, now more than ever companies are turning to Transportation Insight to gain the expertise, processes and systems necessary to compete across worldwide supply chains,” Baltz says. “A differentiator for Transportation Insight, and the key to our success, is our relentless commitment to help our clients sustain competitive advantage, create enterprise value and dominate their markets.” The lead logistics provider expects to further fortify its place on the Inc. Honor Roll, as it implements its growth strategy branded Vision 20/20. The plan outlines Transportation Insight’s goal to become a $3.5 to $5 billion company by January 1, 2020, through continued aggressive organic and acquisition-related expansion. Baltz adds, “We are honored to receive this recognition on the Inc. Honor Roll. Transportation Insight continues to succeed, because our people are executing better than the competition with a dedication to help our clients win.”

As a member of the Inc. 500|5000 list, Transportation Insight shares alumni status with innovative companies such as Microsoft, Oracle, OtterBox, Under Armour and Zappos to name a few. View Transportation Insight’s Inc. 5000 profile online at www.inc.com/profile/ transportation-insight.

Fall Protection Products

A

ll fall protection products fit into four functional categories.

Fall arrest, positioning, suspension and retrieval. Fall Arrest: A fall arrest system is required if any risk exists that a worker may fall from an elevated position, as a general rule, the fall arrest system should be used anytime a working height of six feet or more is reached. Working height is the distance from the walking/working surface to a grade or lower level. A fall arrest system will only come into service should a fall occur. A full-body harness with a shock-absorbing lanyard or a retractable lifeline is the only product recommended. A full-body harness distributes the forces throughout the body, and the shock-absorbing lanyard decreases the total fall arresting forces. Positioning: This system holds the worker in place while keeping his/her hands free to work. Whenever the worker leans back, the system is activated. However, the personal positioning system is not specifically designed for fall arrest purposes. Suspension: This equipment lowers and supports the worker while allowing a hands-free work environment, and is widely used in window washing and painting industries. This suspension system components are not designed to arrest a free fall, a backup fall arrest system should be used in conjunction with the suspension system. Retrieval: Preplanning for retrieval in the event of a fall should be taken into consideration when developing a proactive fall management program. Fall Protection Systems: Listed below are different types of fall safety equipment and their recommended usage.

Class 3 – Full body harnesses are designed to arrest the most severe free falls. Class 4 – Suspension belts are independent work supports used to suspend a worker, such as boatswain’s chairs or raising or lowering harnesses. Rope Lanyard- Offers some elastic properties for all arrest; used for restraint purpose. Web Lanyard – Ideal for restraint purposes where fall hazards are less than 2 feet. Cable Positioning Lanyards – Designed for corrosive or excess heat environments and must be used in conjunction with shock absorbing devices. Shock Absorbers – When used, the fall arresting force will be greatly reduced if a fall occurs. Rope Grabs – A deceleration device which travels on a lifeline, used to safely ascend or descend ladders or sloped surfaces and automatically, by friction, engages the lifeline and locks so as to arrest the fall of an employee. Retractable Lifeline Systems – Gives fall protection and mobility to the user when working at height or in areas where there is a danger of falling. Safety Nets – Can be used to lesson the fall exposure when working where temporary floors and scaffolds are not used and the fall distance exceeds 25 feet. Rail Systems – When climbing a ladder, rail systems can be used on any fixed ladder as well as curved surfaces as a reliable method of fall prevention.

Class 1 – Body belts (single or double D-ring) are designed to restrain a person in a hazardous work position and to reduce the possibility of falls. They should not be used when fall potential exists; positioning only.

The information contained within this document was obtained partially from the St. Paul-Tie or Die Fall Protection Program manual. For the full article visit www.forkliftsafety.com/osha.html

Class 2 – Chest harnesses are used when there are only limited fall hazards (no vertical free fall hazard), or for retrieving persons such as removal of persons from a tank or a bin.

Industry News

New IATA Rules For The Auto Industry

A

number of common auto parts and products are regulated as hazardous materials (hazmat) when shipped by ground, air, ocean, or rail. Businesses that ship hazmat by air must comply with international rules set by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), an agency of the United Nations. Each year, IATA publishes a revised edition of its regulation manual, known as the Dangerous Good Regulations, or DGR. Noncompliance with the air shipping regulations can lead to rejected shipments, incidents in transit, and US DOT fines as high as $75,000 per day per violation.

that ships auto parts by air. Compliance with the 56th Edition DGR is mandatory starting January 1, 2015.

This fall, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) will publish the 56th Edition of its Dangerous Goods Regulations. For auto parts and service operations, the 56th Edition DGR will change the way some common products are shipped, namely airbag- and seatbeltrelated products. The changes will affect OEMs, parts dealers, car dealerships, service operations, and any business

Until now, shippers were required to use one of three Proper Shipping Names (PSNs) to identify these auto products on hazmat shipping papers: “air bag inflators,” “air bag modules,” or “seatbelt pretensioners.” For 2015, IATA will replace these previously accepted shipping names with a new name for both explosive and electronically initiated auto safety devices.

1

Due to the hazards air bag inflators, air bag modules, and seatbelt pretensioners pose in transit, these products are regulated as hazardous materials (hazmat). The United Nations categorizes these products under two different UN ID numbers: UN 0503 and UN 3268. The UN ID number used for a shipment depends on how the device is initiated (i.e., by “explosive propellant” or electronically). New Names for Airbags and Seatbelt Pretensioners

Starting January 1, the following PSNs will apply to the products above: UN 0503 – “Safety devices, pyrotechnic” UN 3268 – “Safety devices electrically initiated” US DOT Proposed Changes On August 25, the US DOT’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) proposed a similar revision to its rules for naming certain shipments of automotive safety devices, found at 49 CFR 172.101. If and when the rule change is finalized, the new DOT standards will apply to all ground shipments. Massive Airbag Recall Leading Dealers to Ship More Hazmat These major changes come during a massive, ongoing recall by the world’s second largest airbag manufacturer. More than ten million airbags have now been recalled due to faulty inflators that can rupture and spray metal shrapnel inside the vehicle. The manufacturer’s recall has so far affected car models from

Honda, BMW, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, Fiat, Chrysler, Ford, and Subaru. Because the effects of the recall are so widespread, it is critical that businesses know the latest hazmat shipping rules in order to safely return these faulty products to the manufacturer. Failure to classify, name, package, mark, label, or document these shipments can result in incidents in transit, rejected shipments, and US DOT fines as high as $75,000 per day per violation. Pre-order the 56th Edition Dangerous Goods Regulations Now To help hazmat shippers comply with the new IATA rules when they go into effect on January 1, Lion now offers the 56th Edition DGR for pre-order. Shippers who pre-order the new regulation manual before October 15 benefit from free shipping within the US. Pre-order by calling 888-546-6511 or online atwww.lion.com/ Services/Bookstore/IATA-DangerousGoods-Regulations-Pre-Sale
