THE MILL RACE

F lavours

May/June 2015

Bringing you everything you need to know about The Mill Race and what this season has to offer.

A Hedgehog’s Tale The hedgehog holds a significant place in the heart of Ross. It’s embedded in the towns emblem and is now celebrated annually in the Hedgehog Festival. We decided to dig a little deeper and find out why this spikey little creature plays such a key role in our community. Around 1500 years ago, the Celtics invaded Ross and named it ‘Ergyng’ - Celtic for ‘Land of the Hedgehog’. Since then the humble creature has featured on various shields and crests throughout the town including the Mayoral Chain. The Shield of Markye Chapel features nine in its design! Many talks and events take place throughout the year where you can learn more about the significance of the hedgehog - keep your eyes peeled on the tourist websites to find out when the next event is taking place.

ask the wine stig is France the only country that makes sparkling wine? Sparkling wine comes in various forms from all over the worlds wine regions, you’ll even find a sparkling wine in Wales. The only form of which that is solely made in France is Champagne, in the Champagne region. Spain is famed for its Cava, which is made using similar methods to Champagne, while Italy is responsible for the phenomenon that is Prosecco, which, in 2013, edged ahead of Champagne in terms of bottles sold around the world.
