T

his one’s going to be a big year: sports enthusiasts excitedly anticipate all the World Cups taking place across the globe – exuberant events even the most casual followers get fanatically swept up in the buzz of, and March 29th marks a momentous day in the UK’s history.

Meanwhile, here at MF Freeman, we plan to break ground, literally, in several locations, to deliver projects we’ve been putting significant planning into. These include a housing development in the Gloucestershire village of Newnham on Severn, and a retirement development in Swindon’s Wichelstowe, to name but a few.

any will remember Keynsham’s iconic red-brick buildings, which were for many years occupied by the Fry’s and Cadbury’s Chocolate Factory. the car parking was located under a podium level, in order to retain more of the factory buildings. This was important from a heritage perspective and there was a lot of local support for this.

Having purchased the site and changed the concept of the overall masterplan for the wider scheme, Freeman Retirement Living were preparing to develop it when St Monica Trust expressed an interest.

“We happily facilitated it for them so that they could go on to develop it and be the operator and end owner of the scheme,” says Luke Freeman. “Our relationship with the St Monica Trust is based upon a shared vision of delivering a high quality mixed-use scheme, which preserves more

AGREEMENT SIGNED FOR EXCLUSIVE RETIREMENT VILLAGE AT WICHELSTOWE Freeman Retirement Living and Swindon Borough Council have signed an agreement to include specialist age-exclusive housing in the Wichelstowe development in Swindon.

The Wichelstowe project will bring quality new homes and improved facilities to the Swindon area. The Canalside section of the development will be the heart of this diverse and distinctive community. Stylish, bursting with character and set amongst beautiful landscaping and greenways, it will feature easilyaccessible amenities including being a short, canal-side walk to Waitrose.

Commenting on this project, Luke Freeman says, “We invest a huge amount of effort into ensuring that our over-55 developments will provide not only a comfortable and secure home for our residents, but will also look after their wellbeing. The Wichelstowe project is a great opportunity for us to provide high quality housing in an ideal environment for later life.”

The full planning application has now been submitted. Should the application be granted, works will commence on the site in 2019.

Moving day can be a chaotic one, if it’s not well planned out in advance. The Move It! Transport team share their top tips.

If they’re old enough, get them involved in packing their own things for the move.

If they’re too young to be helpful, consider additional support from friends and family to keep them occupied on moving day, and don’t forget to make arrangements for your pets as well.

espite it being the first space your guests step into when you welcome them into your home, the entrance hall is often the last space in the house homeowners plan. The interior design of living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms take precedence, and the entrance hall often just becomes filled with whatever items remain, without any planning or much consideration.

Firstly, let us consider light, colour and space. When it comes to painting your hallway or entranceway, a popular choice is to use dark colours, mainly as it camouflages the wear and tear of everyday use. This can be a practical choice, however, bear in mind that darker colours will generally make your walls seem closer - great if you’re aiming for that cosy feel. Using lighter paint colours gives the illusion the walls are further from each other, which is perfect if you are wanting your entrance hall to feel grander. If you have a narrow hallway, painting just one colour on all the walls can risk it feeling quite tunnel-like, whereas painting the end wall in a darker colour than the other walls, can give the room a sense of width and make it feel more spacious. To create the impression of more height in your hallway, paint the walls, any woodwork and ceiling in one uniform colour, making it less obvious where the walls end and where the ceiling starts.

Once appropriate paint colours have been chosen based on the effect they have on our sense of space, it’s then time to carefully choose the items to fill the space with. Deciding on furniture for your entrance hallway can be tricky, especially when you’re unsure what will be complimentary to the space. The right piece of furniture will add character to the room, whether that’s a console or server, a cupboard or a lamp table. Practicality must be considered, after all any well-designed room must be functional if you are to enjoy living there. Consoles and servers tend to be most useful in hallways due to their length and narrow width. They can help create a grander look, while being efficient with space and offering a table top to stand a lamp or vase of flowers upon.

Many consoles and servers have drawers which prove very useful in the entrance hall for storage or a safe place for keys, often also providing space underneath for neatly storing boots and shoes. The addition of a large mirror above a console or server allows for a reflection to make the room feel larger and disperses the available light, creating a more spacious atmosphere.

When placing a mirror, try to ensure it’s on either one of the two side walls, as placing one at the far end of the room can cause a negative reflection, making your walls appear closer together.

I LOVE LIVING IN WEOBLEY

By Lola Martin I like living in Weobley because it stands out from all the other places I have lived in. It has a butchers which does amazing sausages, you should try them! There is all kinds of fun stuff to do and the shop provides you with everything you need for everyday life. It’s only a short walk to the park where there is a seesaw, some swings, climbing frames and an obstacle course.

Weobley is famous for its black and white houses which were made from trees which stood where the houses are now. It is a very safe village with not much litter on the floor. It’s got a good community so everyone is happy and smiling. It has pretty scenery and the roses by the shop smell amazing!

In Weobley there is the Castle Green which friendly people walk their dogs and bring their children to school

through. Long ago, there was a castle on one of the hills there. But after a while, it was knocked down or it fell down I’m not sure. Next to the Castle there is a field with sheep and their lambs in. in the field, there is a path and if you walk on it and climb over the stile you get very close to Weobley school.

The village’s primary school is very good and if you don’t already go there, you’re not a grown up and you are planning to move school, then I recommend it to you. It has a year 6 class, a year 5 class, a year 4 class, a year 3 class, a year 2 class, a year 1 class, a reception class and nursery. All the teachers are brilliant and understanding to all the children so everyone is obedient and kind.

Soon, there will be new houses and I am so exited! Guess how many are being built? 39! A lot of people wondered how many, like me, but when we figured it out we had an even more hard to answer question to figure out. Why couldn’t there be 40? I love living in Weobley!

reeman Homes has designed the new development coming soon to the Gloucestershire village of Newnham on Severn using Bristol-based planning and urban design consultancy, Origin3 Studio. The development will include a mix of one, two, three, four and five-bedroom homes, and they will be a combination of traditional and more contemporary houses. The three largest houses will each exhibit glass frontages to make the most of stunning views of the Severn. There will also be a selfcontained, gated area of properties dedicated to those over 55. These have been designed to incorporate additional security and services to help support later living.

The development will be situated on a gently rising section of land near the banks of the River Severn. It will have excellent commuter links to Gloucester to the north and Bristol to the south. The site will include landscaped and green infrastructure areas, with native tree retention and planting.

Newnham on Severn sits next to The Forest of Dean on the banks of the Severn, the river much of the town’s history is closely linked with. For an impressive view of the horseshoe bend in the snaking Severn, walk around the back of St Peter’s Church,

which stands at the top of the High Street.

From this vantage point you’ll sometimes see keen surfers paddling out to patiently wait for a wave to ride. The Severn Bore which they’re hoping to catch is one of the country’s eight bores - a natural phenomenon formed when the water funnels into the increasingly narrowing shape of the river as it reaches the Severn estuary, causing the tide to rise and creating a powerful wave. The bores vary in height throughout the year, with the larger ones reaching around 10 meters.

The historical St Peter’s Church recently underwent significant renovation to have its bell frame and bells restored, which have rung out over the village since 1603. The church exhibits original architecture and exquisite stained glass windows and is the venue for Newnham Live – a music festival that has become an annual affair, attracting both local and international performers. The festival’s profits go towards local charities and community initiatives.

PATHS TO PARADISE Country lifestyle photographer and Gloucestershire local Lowri Pendrell sheds light on some of the county’s prettiest family walking trails and picnic spots.

WINCHCOMBE Walk time: 1 hour 30 minutes Distance: 3 miles Where to eat & drink: The Lion Inn This circular route takes you below the historical site of Belas Knap and through some beautiful sweeping views of Winchcombe valley, carpeted in yellow rapeseed flowers in late spring, before returning past the grand Sudeley Castle.

Extend the walk up through the woods to reach Belas Knap if you want something more challenging.

THE WALK ✽ Park along Vineyard Street in Winchcombe, take the footpath through the field on your right (entrance is close to the bridge). ✽ Walk along this path until you get to a road. Turn left and walk on this road until it forks off to the right, carry on with the cricket pitch on your right. ✽ After the cricket pitch you’ll see a gate leading into the field straight ahead. Go through gate and walk up the hill,

following the faint path. There are lovely views at the top of the field which can be taken in when catching your breath. ✽ Go through the gate at the top and onto a road. Go straight across the road and follow it along past the pathway for Belas Knap (if you fancy a more challenging walk, head on up!). ✽ Continue along this road for another 5-10 minutes until you see a rough track that is signposted for ‘Humblebee Cottages’ on your left. Take this track down past the cottages, soaking up the views, and down to the farm. The path takes you to the right of the farm and around the side. ✽ Follow the path all the way down, over a stile and down through a field.

You’ll go over two little streams, at the second one walk straight across the field, and pretty much keep heading in that direction until you eventually get back to a road. Go left here and it will take you back to Vineyard Street.

ELKSTONE Walk time: 1 hour Distance: 1.8 miles Where to eat & drink: The Green Dragon Inn Starting by Sparrowthorn farm or Elkstone village, this is a beautiful spring walk taking you through fluorescent yellow rapeseed fields and a valley of wild flowers, making the perfect backdrop for a picnic.

THE WALK ✽ Park up on the side of the road where you can, making sure not to block the farm gates, and begin along the track to the right of the old barn house. Keep going until you get to a junction nearing Elkstone village. Note: You can also begin the route here. ✽ Take the left dirt track and continue down to the valley at the bottom. This is a nice place to stop for a picnic and soak up the pretty view, as pictured. ✽ Continue along this track until you see a signpost and the paths split off in different directions. Take a left up through the field, keeping the tree line to your left and the very small stream to your right. The footpath can be very overgrown and not always clear but keep going through the field until the path becomes clear again.

This will take you up the hill, through a woodland path until you eventually return to the main road and farm.

STANTON Walk time: 1 hour 15 minutes Distance: 2.4 miles Where to eat & drink: The Mount Inn If you’re after a bit of escapism, the village of Stanton is about as quaint as it gets.

After soaking up the village charm, head up the steep hill where you’ll be rewarded with the most beautiful views that stretch for miles.

COWLEY Walk time: 1 hour 30 minutes Distance: 3.3 miles Where to eat & drink: Cowley Manor A firm family favourite walk all year round. This takes you through rolling meadows and valleys and the charming Cotswold village of Cowley. It provides plenty of pretty spots to stop for a picnic, or put your feet up after the walk in one of Cowley Manor’s hammocks overlooking its lovely lake.

Look out for: Alpacas. You’ll be walking past lots of them and their young, always a big hit with the children.

THE WALK ✽ Starting with Cowley Manor on your right, keep walking down the road until you find the footpath sign to your left, follow this path and you will get to a gate and stile. ✽ Walking down through the fields, keep an eye out for the metal animal sculptures. Go through the kissing gate and continue across the field until you see the footpath sign and gate to your right. ✽ Walk down the narrow path on the right next to the alpaca field (hopefully they will be there!). The path leads through another gate, down through a woodland area and out into a field. ✽ Walk across the field until you reach a track. Follow the track up to the left until you get to the main road.

✽ Cross the road walking along it for a few yards until you see a gate and rough path in front of you. Keeping to the left of the track, walk along this route, through a gate and a wooded area. Continuing to keep left, follow a fenced path which eventually leads to a gate. ✽ At the gate, go down and sharp left, walk along this field and begin to walk up (it’s fairly steep), you will see a footpath sign half way up. ✽ At the top of the hill, walk through into the flat open field, keeping the central tree line to your left. Continue this way going slightly to the right and eventually starting to go downhill. ✽ Keep going down with the hedgerow to your right until you get to a gate, join the country lane and go straight across and up the slight hill. Carry on walking through the houses until you reach a path on your right. ✽ Follow this path around to the left, which will take you over the hill and eventually down to a road. Go left and walk along this road for a few yards until you get to a stile on your right.

Go over the stile and through the big open field, following the faint path that leads to another stile. You should be able to see Cowley Manor in front of you through the trees. Take a left at the road and this will take you back to the beginning.

THE WALK ✽ Starting from the village, walk up the road to the right, up the steep hill past The Mount Inn. Alternatively park up at The Mount Inn if you want to have a drink or some food on your return. ✽ Take the small path that leads straight up through the trees. This is very rough and steep, so be careful. Follow this path all the way up to the top of the hill. ✽ Soak up the views for a while and catch your breath, then continue along the path beside the hedgerow, still going up! ✽ At the top where the path meets a road, turn right and go over the cattle grid.

Follow this track until you reach the farmhouse on your left, then take the path leading down to your right. ✽ Follow this all the way down, through fields, until you get to a gate by some barns. Go through the gate and continue down the track back into Stanton village.

METHOD Heat the oven to 190C/375F/ gas mark 5.

Grease and line a 20cm round springform cake tin.

Put the flour in a bowl, add the butter and rub in with your fingertips until the mix resembles breadcrumbs (this can be done with a processor).

Stir in the sugar and sultanas.

Combine the cider and vinegar, pour into the dry ingredients and mix lightly but thoroughly Finally, fold in the slices of apple.

Spoon out and smooth down the cake mix into the prepared tin and sprinkle demerara sugar generously over the top.

Bake for 40-45 minutes, until golden brown and a skewer comes out clean.

Leave to cool before serving with a dusting of icing sugar.

along the cobbled streets. I stopped at Pritličje, a fashionable café and bar frequently displaying art exhibitions, where I enjoyed a cup of mint tea. From there, it was a short walk to the castle, which is easily one of the most picturesque destinations in the entire country. Several panoramas of the city, including the castle tower, offer amazing views of the city and its surroundings. The castle, too, displays exhibitions, as well as virtual historic tours, a museum of puppetry, and some of the best dining in town. Where I sated my appetite, though, was at Bazilika, a small bistro across the Cankar theatre on the other side of the city centre, where I ordered a delicious quinoa pie and salad.

There’s something for every type of foodie in Ljubljana; fantastic burger joints, traditional Slovenian cuisine, vegetarian restaurants, open-air food markets, and, of course, cake shops and bakeries galore. I topped off lunch at a favourite – an ice cream shop called Romantika, which serves exotic flavours selected according to the season, ranging from Matcha to Parmesan. They’re sure to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters.

From there, I made my way towards the greenest part of town, Tivoli Park. Beautiful avenues slowly dissolving into a dense forest cover an area of about three square miles, bordering many of the capital’s cultural and sightseeing hotspots such as the National Gallery, a handful of museums, the opera, a jazz club, even a zoo. I chose my usual path that took me down Jakopič Promenade, an outdoor gallery often displaying some form of nature photography in majestic large-format prints. Watching the sun set from the benches at Tivoli Pond was an ideal conclusion to my weekend trip. Though successful, I realised it had achieved the opposite of my desired effect; I would have to visit home again soon.

Taking a stroll around the lake is an activity as popular with tourists as it is with the locals, though certainly worth the visit even on the more crowded weekends. The lake is most notable for its small island, complete with a pilgrimage church and bell tower, which is accessible via a gondola-style wooden boat.

Despite it being autumn, the weather was just warm enough to take a chilly but refreshing dip in the water. Before leaving Bled, be sure to stop in at one of the many lake-side restaurants and pick up a local specialty, the Bled cream cake - a must-try for anyone with a sweet tooth.

On the way back to Ljubljana, I stopped at Radovljica, a small, charming medieval town. This hidden gem is packed with quaint little shops and museums, but the town truly comes alive during the annual two-day chocolate festival in April. During this period, every chocolate-related enterprise, from the largest Slovenian brand down to the smallest cake shop, Left, the annual two-day chocolate festival at Radovljica always draws a sells delectable confectioneries on stands crowd. The town square is surrounded by colourful houses, many of which feature well-preserved frescoes and architectural ornaments. Having taken in the scenery, it was time to head back to the capital.

I wanted to get an early start the following day, as Sunday mornings in Ljubljana can be just as rewarding as the bustling nightlife. This is the quietest time of the week here, and I had the Old Town almost to myself, taking a peaceful walk
