Alexandra Cabanilla possesses one of the most versatile, expressive and educated contemporary voices in Ecuador. She has recorded two albums as a solo artist and has worked on numerous performances in varied fields and styles. She was the lead singer at Cirque du Soleil’s “OVO” 2014-2015 season in Japan. Misquilla is honoured to have her performing live every night. Navijio Cevallos was invited to record his first album when he was seven years old and he has never stopped exploring Ecuadorian music. Today, he is one of the most respected instrumentalists and singers of the genre. He has won multiple awards, including a Latin Grammy nomination for folklore music. Navijio is the founder and director of the “Pambil Trio” and works currently as a solo artist, arranger and producer.

Eduardo “Chocolate” Morales is a living legend of the Ecuadorian requinto and is recognized for his extremely pure, traditional interpretation of this instrument. He has lent his talent to accompany practically all of our musical icons. This has earned him awards and recognitions from public and private entities during his 45 year musical career, in which he has contributed greatly to preserving our cultural heritage.

Matías Alvear, an Ecuadorian bass player, composer, and singer, has formed a part of some of the most emblematic new bands in Quito. His extraordinary talent has projected him as one of the most prominent and promising Ecuadorian musicians. Matias is the final piece of the quartet that ensures an unforgettable show every night at Misquilla.

ECUADORIAN MUSIC & FOOD MISQUILLA comes from the kichwa word mishquilla (“sweet”). It refers to the unique feeling involved in playing authentic, heartfelt Ecuadorian music. It’s that “little something” that distinguishes good music from great music. Misquilla came to life as a place to celebrate our music with the voices and instruments of iconic contemporary performers covering the rich musical universe of all of Ecuador’s regions. We have made every effort to ensure that your experience of Ecuador’s musical landscape is the best it can be. We complement the talent of our performers with top quality sound, delicious local dishes, traditional Andean drinks, and a warm, cozy environment. This is how we, as musicians and proud Ecuadorians, wanted to showcase the best of what our musical culture and local gastronomy has to offer. We’re so happy to be able to share it with you!

THE STORY OF THE PASILLO

The Pasillo (translated literally as a “little step”) is a South American genre of music extremely popular in the territories that comprised the 19th century commonwealth known as the Great Colombia (Gran Colombia). The genre spread throughout this territory, especially in Ecuador (where it is considered the national musical style), and to a lesser extent in the mountainous regions of Venezuela and Panama. As it moved through these lands, it absorbed the individual characteristics of isolated villages, giving it an eclectic feel, as the style, tone, and tempo of the music differs from village to village and country to country. The Ecuadorian pasillo incorporates the influence of the San Juanito, giving it a slow and melancholic tone. It became a national music icon, and since the beginning of the 20th century, it has gained in popularity. Melancholic texts referring to nostalgic and brokenhearted feelings combine with melodies that reflect the beauty of Ecuadorian landscapes and women, and the bravery of the men. In addition, there are songs which reflect admiration for a region or a city, and in some places these have become even more representative than their own city anthems. Such is the case for "Guayaquil de Mis Amores" by Nicasio Safadi and “El Aguacate” in Quito by Cesar Guerrero. Due to the music’s capacity to integrate different social, ethnic, and generational groups, the Ecuadorian pasillo has become the most symbolic representation of our music.
