Weltstars geben sich die Klinke in die Hand, internationale Großproduktionen entstehen vor Babelsberger Kulissen und begeistern weltweit das Publikum.

Doch auch außerhalb des Studios wird Hochkarätiges produziert. Berlin-Brandenburg bietet eine hervorragende Infrastruktur, vielseitige Talente sowie spezielle Förder- und Finanzierungsmöglichkeiten – und bleibt Filmstandort #1 in Deutschland! 16 Medienboard-geförderte Filme feiern insgesamt Premiere auf der Berlinale, davon drei im Wettbewerb um den goldenen Bären! Wir drücken die Daumen – auch für die drei Oscar®-Anwärter „Pina“, „Anonymus“ und „In Darkness“. Neben dem Filmstandort Berlin-Brandenburg entwickelt sich auch der Digital standort prächtig: Investoren aus aller Welt haben die Hauptstadtregion entdeckt, der Begriff „Sillicon Valley Europas“ ist zur geläufigen Wendung geworden. Deutsche Gamestage und Berlin Web Week sorgen für einen Aufschlag der internationalen Digitalszene im Frühjahr – in beiden Fällen rechnen wir mit deutlich steigenden Besucherzahlen. Today, Babelsberg is experiencing a resurgence of the success and glamour of its early days, with a constant flow of world-class movie stars and major international productions that delight audiences worldwide. For films made outside the sound studio, Berlin-Brandenburg offers an outstanding infrastructure, a huge talent pool and special funding and financing opportunities that make it Germany’s undisputed film capital! A total of 16 Medienboard-funded films will premiere at the 2012 Berlinale, three of which are in competition for the Golden Bear and for an Oscar®, as well: “Pina,” “Anonymus” and “In Darkness.” The capital region is now also a digital industry hub, with investors from all over the world increasingly interested in “Europe’s Sillicon Valley” and popular events like the German Games Days and Berlin Web Week.

as am 12. Februar 1912 mit der ersten Klappe zu dem Stummfilm „Der Totentanz“ mit Asta Nielsen in der Hauptrolle begann, rundet sich am 12. Februar diesen Jahres zu einer einzigartigen Erfolgsgeschichte: Studio Babelsberg ist das weltweit älteste Groß-Atelier Filmstudio und produziert seit einem Jahrhundert Filme, die (Film)geschichte schreiben. In über 3.000 Filmen aller Genres haben hier unzählige namhafte Filmemacher ihre Visionen umgesetzt: „Die Nibelungen“, „Der letzte Mann“, „Faust“, „Metropolis“, „Der Blaue Engel“, „Die Drei von der Tankstelle“, „Münchhausen“, „Die Feuerzangenbowle“, „Die Geschichte vom kleinen Muck“, „Die Legende von Paul und Paula“, „Der Pianist“, „V für Vendetta“, „Die Bourne Verschwörung“ und und und.

Ob Klassiker, Publikumsliebling seiner Zeit oder filmisches Experiment – stets hat das Filmstudio die internationale Entwicklung des Kinos mitbestimmt und war wegweisend in filmtechnischen Innovationen. Daran hat sich nichts geändert. Kaiserreich, Weimarer Republik, Nationalsozialismus, DDR, Bundesrepublik – politische Systeme gingen und kamen – das Studio blieb „State-of-theArt“. Auch heute entstehen hier internationale Produktionen wie „Der Vorleser“, „Inglourious Basterds“, „Der Ghostwriter“, „Anonymus“ oder „Die drei Musketiere“. Und Stars wie Kate Winslet, Matt Damon, Natalie Portman, Tom Cruise und Brad Pitt geben sich die Klinke in die Hand. Erst letztes Jahr wurde mit einem Budget von 100 Millionen Euro der bislang teuerste deutsche Film „Cloud Atlas“ in den Babelsberger Studios gedreht. Die Großproduktion, die

This applied not only to German productions, including “Barbara” by Christian Petzold, which will be in competition at this year’s Berlinale, Helmut Dietl’s “Zettl,” Doris Dörrie’s “Bliss” and the children’s classic “Huck Finn” by Hermine Huntgeburth, but also to major international productions, such as “Cloud Atlas” from the Wachowski siblings together with Tom Tykwer and starring Tom Hanks and Halle Berry. All of these leading films carry the label “Made in Berlin-Brandenburg.” Each of these productions also received funding from the Medienboard, as did four of 2011’s top eight biggest German hit. Millionen Zuschauer sahen sich 2011 Medienboard-geförderte Filme im Kino an – das sind 3 Millionen mehr Kinobesucher als im Vorjahr! Im Verhältnis zu den Gesamtzuschauerzahlen deutscher Filme bedeutet dies einen überproportionalen Anstieg! Die Zahl der Anträge ist auf 454 gestiegen: davon wurden insgesamt 217 Filmprojekte (89 Langfilme) mit einer Gesamtfördersumme von 23,3 Mio. Euro gefördert. Die 2010 begonnene Kinodigitalisierung wurde erfolgreich weitergeführt: 46 Kinosäle wurden mit Medienboard-Fördermitteln in Höhe von 940.343 Euro auf digitalen Stand gebracht – zukunfts weisende Investitionen, die die Kinovielfalt der Region sichern und den Film- und Medienstandort wirtschaftlich und kulturell stärken. Film Funding – Investment in Business and Culture | 13 million people saw Medienboard-funded films in cinemas in 2011 – that’s roughly 3 million more than in the previous year! This marks a disproportionately strong increase in relation to the overall audience numbers for German films! The number of funding applications also rose to 454. Among the 217 film projects for which a total funding sum of € 23.3 million was handed out, 89 of the projects involved feature-length films. In 2011, cinema digitalization, which began in 2010, was continued effectively, and 46 cinemas were digitalized with the help of Medienboard funds totaling €940,343. This funding represents a future-oriented investment that ensures the region’s cinema diversity and strengthens the location economically and culturally.

ie Hauptstadtregion bietet nationalen und internationalen Filmproduzenten ein großes Spektrum an attraktiven Förder – und Finanzierungsalternativen: Neben dem Filmförderprogramm des Medienboard gibt es den Deutschen Filmförderfonds (DFFF), die Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA), die Investitionsbank Berlin (IBB) und die Investitionsbank des Landes Brandenburg (ILB) mit dem neu aufgelegten Programm GAP (siehe Kasten).

Neue Gap-Finanzierung Die ILB bietet jetzt auch Gap-Finanzierungen an. Mit den Gap-Darlehen wird eine verbleibende Lücke in der Gesamtfinanzierung eines Filmes geschlossen. Die Filme müssen ein überdurchschnittliches Erlöspotential aufweisen. Internationale Koproduktionen können eine GapFinanzierung erhalten, wenn ein deutscher Produzent beteiligt ist und der Film teilweise in der Hauptstadtregion Berlin-Brandenburg hergestellt wird. Daneben vergibt die ILB Zwischenfinanzierungen für Filmproduktionen. In den letzten sechs Jahren wurden über 100 Filme finanziert. Dazu gehören auch „Pina“ und „In Darkness“, die für die diesjährige Oscar®Verleihung nominiert wurden. www.ilb.de The Brandenburg State Investment Bank (ILB) now offers gap financing services. These interim loans allow producers to close remaining gaps in the overall financing of a film. In order to qualify, each film must demonstrate above-average revenue potential. International co-productions are eligible to receive gap financing if a German producer is involved and the film is partially produced in the Berlin-Brandenburg capital region. The ILB also provides intermediate financing for film productions. In the past six years, over 100 films received financing, including “Pina” and “In Darkness,” both of which have been nominated for an Oscar® in 2012. www.ilb.de 

At the center of this success story once again is the renowned Studio Babelsberg, which will be celebrating 100 years of cinema history this year. In 2011, among the international co-production shot here were “Cloud Atlas” starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant and Susan Sarandon. The film featured two parallel film teams under the direction of Tom Tykwer and Lana and Andy Wachowski respectively. Other films made last year in Brandenburg’s countryside included Andreas Dresen’s award-winning drama “Stopped on Track,” the Berlinale submissions “Barbara” and “Herr Wichmann aus der dritten Reihe,” the made-for-TV version of Ferdinand von Schirach’s “Crime“ and many other series productions.

Jetzt feiern die fünf ausgewählten Kurzfilme während der BerlinaleTalent-Campus-Eröffnung Premiere. Eine international besetzte Jury bestehend aus Regisseur Guy Maddin (Keyhole), Regisseurin Jasmila Žbanic´ (Esmas Geheimnis – Grbavica) und Kamerafrau Judith Kaufmann (Wer wenn nicht wir) zeichnet den besten von ihnen im Rahmen des „Dine & Shine Talents Rendezvous“ im ewerk aus. Insgesamt reichten 160 Filmemacher aus 61 Ländern ihre Projekte ein. Die fünf Finalisten realisierten ihre Kurzfilme bis Ende 2011 mit Berliner Produzenten und mit Unterstützung vom Medienboard sowie Sachleistungen der Filmwirtschaft. Nun hoffen sie auf den BerlinToday Award, der im Rahmen des Berlinale Talent Campus vergeben wird.

The five finalists completed their short films with help from Berlin-based producers and added support from the Medienboard and various other film-industry service providers. Die Initiatoren Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Île de France Film Commission, Roma Lazio Film Commission und Madrid Film Commission bieten mit dem Netzwerktreffen eine Plattform, Partner für zukünftige Projekte zu finden. CRC Meets Brazil | Producers, distributors and investors representing the film capitals of Berlin, Paris, Rome and Madrid will meet at this year’s Berlinale for the latest co-production meeting of the CRC European Network! The network’s initiators, which include the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, the Île de France Film Commission, the Roma Lazio Film Commission and the Madrid Film Commission, will once again provide a platform that makes it possible to find partners for future projects. Februar Deutsch-Russische Vereinssitzung und East European Brunch | Der im Sommer 2009 gegründete Förderverein DeutschRussische Filmakademie trifft sich unter dem Vorsitz von Simone Baumann. Im Programm stehen u.a. eine Casestudy zur deutsch-russischen Koproduktion „Ausgerechnet Sibirien“ und eine Auswertung der Ergebnisse der ersten Förderentscheidung des deutsch-russischen Co-Development-Funds. Im Anschluss laden das FilmFestival Cottbus und Connecting Cottbus zum traditionellen East European Brunch. German-Russian Association Meeting and East European Brunch The German-Russian Film Academy Association was founded in summer 2009 and will meet during the Berlinale under the chairmanship of Simone Baumann. Among the program points to be discussed on February 15th are a case study of the German-Russian co-production “Ausgerechnet Sibirien” and an evaluation of the results of the first funding decisions made by the German-Russian Co-Development-Fund. 

Seit 2006 trägt auch das Förderprogramm „Innovative Audiovisuelle Inhalte“ zum Ausbau des Digitalstandortes bei: Mit 1 Mio. Euro im Jahr unterstützt das Medienboard die Entwicklung von innovativem Content für digitale Medien, von Games und Apps über Social Media und Transmediales bis hin zu interaktiven Dokus. ntrepreneurs looking to start a company in the digital sector are flocking to Berlin – and this positive trend picked up even more speed in the past twelve months. Until recently, the capital region was well-known as Germany’s creative hub, but now it’s also become the nation’s digital start-up capital. More new companies are founded here – in particular in the field of social and interactive media – than anywhere else in Germany. Entrepreneurs continue to be spurred on by the region’s creative climate and comparably affordable office space, and more and more national and international investors are interested in young Berlin-based firms. American actor Ashton Kutcher is only one of the many prominent personalities participating in Berlin-based start-ups, in his case the music service SoundCloud, the virtual opinion market Amen and Gidsy, a platform on which users can offer special events. A number of leading international digital events also enrich the capital’s digital landscape, such as the Berlin Web

Week (including the digital conferences re:publica and NEXT), the German Games Days, the animago AWARDs for digital excellence and the medienwoche@IFA with its International Media Congress. The Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg initiates and supports many events outside the field of media business marketing and development. For example, the “Innovative Audiovisual Content” funding program has been encouraging digital expansion in the region since 2006. The program uses €1 million annually to support the development of innovative content for digital media, including games, apps, social media, transmedial projects and interactive documentaries. In this field, as well, the magnetism of the capital region continues to draw the digital creative scene, as evidenced by the considerable increase in both the number of applicants and the application volume this past year.

März 2012 Um die interaktive Szene der Hauptstadtregion bei der internationalen Vernetzung zu unterstützen, ermöglicht das Medienboard Unternehmen aus Berlin und Brandenburg erstmalig die Teilnahme an der South by Southwest – SXSW Interactive (09.–13.03.2012), der wichtigsten Branchenmesse für Interaktive Medien in Austin, Texas, USA. Das Programm bietet Berlin-Brandenburger Unternehmen aus der Content- und Digitalwirtschaft, insbesondere den Bereichen Web, Transmedia, Mobile und Games die Gelegenheit, Erfahrungen auf dem internationalen Messeparkett zu sammeln, sich mit anderen Branchen, wie Musik und Film zu vernetzen und wertvolle Branchenkontakte zu knüpfen. Auf dem Programm stehen u.a. der Zugang zur Interactive-Konferenz und Trade Show der SXSW 2012, sowie die Präsentation am Berlin-Brandenburger Gemeinschaftsstand. Zudem können die Unternehmen an weiteren Events, wie den offiziellen SXSW Interactive-Partys teilnehmen und werden in die Marketing- und Kommunikationsmaßnahmen für die Berlin-Brandenburg-Präsenz einbezogen. For example, the Medienboard’s “Innovative Audiovisual Content” program uses € 1 million in annual funds to support content production for digital media. Funding is given to new and marketable content for games, social media and mobile devices but also to interactive Web documentaries and crossmedia in the categories of development and production. Who is eligible for funding?

Producers and/or developers from the German federal states of Berlin or Brandenburg are eligible. You must provide a copy of your company’s official listing at the local commercial registry or tax office.

Alles neu in 2012 MEDIA DESK Hamburg Cornelia Hammelmann, seit 2000 Geschäftsführerin des MEDIA Desk in Hamburg, hat am 1. Februar 2012 die Projektleitung des Deutschen Filmförderfonds (DFFF) bei der FFA in Berlin übernommen. Die Leitung des Desk übernimmt kommissarisch Christiane Siemen, verstärkt wird das Team in Hamburg seit Mitte Januar durch Lisa Emer. Kreatives Europa Der neue Vorschlag für das Nachfolgeprogramm von MEDIA 2007 liegt nun auf dem Tisch. Ab 2014 werden die Aktivitäten der drei Programme MEDIA, MEDIA Mundus und Kultur 2007 unter dem Dach Creative Europe zusammengeführt. Dazu kommt ein neues Finanzierungsinstrument, ähnlich dem in 2011 eingeführten Production Guarantee Fund, das Kulturschaffenden aus allen Bereichen offen stehen wird. Starting in 2014, the activities of the three programs known as MEDIA, MEDIA Mundus and Kultur 2007, will be brought together under the “Creative Europe” umbrella. There will also be a new financing instrument similar to the Production Guarantee Fund introduced in 2011, which will be open to creative artists from all fields. A total of € 1.8 billion is scheduled to be made available, € 900 million of which will go towards the fields covered by the current MEDIA and MEDIA Mundus programs until 2020.
