Safeguarding Higher Education as an Engine for California’s Prosperity The California Coalition for Public Higher Education is a bipartisan movement of concerned citizens who have joined forces to safeguard the state’s public higher education system. With alumni, business and civic leaders, parents, students, educators, doctors, and public officials working together, the Coalition is dedicated to a common cause: to protect and advance our community and state colleges and research universities as a driver of the state’s economy and quality of life. We Need to Invest in the State’s Future

The Need for Additional Funding

Since 1960, when the State of California adopted its Master Plan for Higher Education, California has been the envy of the world for its visionary commitment to a high-quality, affordable and

• California is expected to be about 1 million college graduates short of what state employers will need over the next decade. • Tuition has increased by 300% at University of California and California State University campuses over the past two decades.

accessible educational system for all. That will all change unless we step up to protect our schools.

Already, California invests less per student at its public universities than it did 30 years ago.

The lower funding has driven up tuition, reduced course offerings, caused faculty to leave and increased time to graduation. The COVID-19 pandemic and other state emergencies will further

• California Community Colleges credential more than 80% of the state’s firefighters, law enforcement officers and emergency management technicians and serve as the state’s largest workforce training provider. • One in every 10 employees in California is a graduate of the California State University system, with more than half of alumni staying in California and contributing to the state’s economy. • The University of California system serves as the state’s third-largest employer and is responsible for sparking statewide innovation, with an average of 5 inventions per day.

Public Higher Education Must Be a Top Priority The Coalition’s political committees have helped elect public officials and enact measures that protect the University of California, California State University and California Community Colleges as a system of higher education that provides the workforce, healthcare, mobility and ideas that inspire our state’s innovation and make California the world’s fifth largest economy.

It is time to say yes to affordability and opportunity! It is time to say yes to jobs and industry!

Together, the University of California and California State systems contribute over $60 billion to the state’s economy every year.

We have been encouraged by the progress we have made to secure needed funding for Cali-

fornia’s public higher education system. But we must do more. California’s system of public higher education must, once again, be a top priority for our state. With your help, the California Coalition for Public Higher Education is making this happen.
