Devin Riley, a senior at Johansen High, born with Muscular Dystrophy, has never allowed his condition slow him down. He is a whiz at computer designs and programing, which has saved my tech life on more than one occasion, said Maria Guerrero. Devin is amazing at the computer and has helped me with my computer problems. He is a joy to have in the classroom, said Teri Cornwell. “When my projector suddenly did not work, of course I had a big presentation and my trouble-shooting skills did not suffice. In fact, my efforts only worsened the situation!

He uses his skills to teach other young people how to fix computers.” Maria, said, “Thanks to Devin and his idea of the hands-on approach of ‘each-one-teach-one to better use technology,’ there are more young people in our community with real marketable skills and plenty of adults with thankful hearts.”

Photo use etiquette Adding visual component and using the correct image can take a presentation from drab to fab very quickly. Images help tell a story that words alone can’t. It is easy to find images on the Internet, you just right click on an image to download it, or use online search engine such as http://images.google.com to find them. Make sure to follow photo use etiquette before using it in a presentation. If you are using a photo off the internet, it is best to get permission from the creator before using it even if you are using the photo under fair use. Here are some terms to assist in your photo use etiquette: Copyright: get permission from the creator before using it. Nearly every photo taken gives the author or the one who takes the photo a protectable right to prevent others from using or reproducing the image. Royalty Free: copyright license to an image without many restrictions based on one-time payment. Right to use copyrighted image without needing to pay each time used. Creative Commons: right to use an image under certain circumstances. Stock photo: services require you to pay for a license. Licensing can vary from copyright, royalty free, or creative common. Fair Use: you are allowed to use a copyright photo for educational purposes only in your classroom. You may not re-post without the holder’s permission. Public Domain: are not subject to copyright in the first place.

Online Resource of the Week Our avatars at the bottom of the page were made with ToonDoo.com character making tool. A neat way for students and teachers to create cartoon caricatures of themselves for projects.

Make Belief Comix

www.makebeliefscomix.com Students can learn how to create characters and practice language skills by making cartoons. With a little imagination, they can turn stories into comic strips. Because they are able to create multi-panel strips, students can gain experience telling stories using both words and pictures: structuring the plot, identifying characters, and writing dialogue. Make Beliefs Comix is also a fun way for students and teachers to create a summary of a lesson or topic in a comic book strip. > 21 ways to use makebeliefscomix.com in the classroom > Additional Comic strip site: Pixton.com For Schools
