Tips from the editors

Between Christmas and December 21 (which has never been as important as it is this year), the design world has massively decided that it is a better idea to stop on the second date. Out of habit, anxiety, laziness, renovation specialists have refused to make an historic turn. We may regret this choice, tinged with a venal attitude since there was so much to think about, reflect, imagine, and design about a possible End of Days: ephemeral design, (ultra) trendy products, and so many things that we would never expect to brighten the "day after". Since advice is cheap, no one on the McommeMaison editorial staff was more willing than any other to bet on this legend from the past, meaning that if information tends to become more commonplace, but in doubt we decided to create a double December 2012/ January 2013 issue. Thus, come what may in these uncertain times, there will be Design content for those left behind on December 21. That had to be said, and written, but now let's get back to basics. For Christmas, manufacturers of High Tech products offer us a range of new products, each more elegant than the last, monumental wine cellars that climb the walls and are becoming the must-have room in the house, Decoration and Design websites are releasing their finest products, enough to make your head spin when it comes time to buy presents. The race has already started. The moral of the story is: Christmas mobilizes so much energy in December that it is pointless worrying about the apocalypse. Change dimensions… Today, designers are letting their imagination run wild, creating high tech objects with designer lines that beautify our interiors. Playing with the appearance of objects, they transport us to another dimension where design and technology are closely linked. In this world, our minds travel to a place where imagination has no limits. The Wave Chaise below is a good example of this. Comfortably nestled on the builtin chaise longue, you can relax in front of a good film or listening to your favourite CD, surf the web, or take a little nap.

It's practical and even includes spaces for storing CDs and DVDs. This very complete piece of furniture contains an office space behind the partition for working or browsing while seated. It is getting easier for devices to find their place in our interior design. Designers, who traditionally used to offer black or metallic grey, are now switching to colour. In bright, well-lit environment, colourful equipment in a lively hue (red, orange, green, blue...) integrates harmoniously and provides warmth.

High tech for all‌ As you can see below, high tech is also aimed at children. You can even say they are very fond of it! are well-protected to survive their abuse and will be sure to make the little ones happy this Christmas! So, does high tech design appeal to you? Don't forget to maintain a simple, pure style, and above all avoid overloading. Focus on the space, brightness, a minimalist environment warmed by the colours selected and in harmony with the rest. In terms of materials, you can't lose with aluminium, metal, corian, plexiglass, and glass. Elegant and sophisticated, they will give a real high tech style to your interior. For accessories, opt for originality. The dressing room is much more than just a storage space. It is a highly symbolic place, charge with the intimacy of its owner and his or her living habits. 20 The dressing room...

A space suited to your interior‌ Regarding the space used for your dressing room, you have many options available. You can dedicate a whole room to it, particularly if it adjoins the bedroom. Closed off with a glass door, it will let you admire the carefully organized space. If the room is small, you should make sure you can still stand up and easily access all of the storage solutions. Otherwise, it would be better to use part of the bedroom. A wall recess would be an ideal location to build a dressing area, which can offer infinite

possibilities these days. A whole wall section can also be used for storage. It will reduce the size of the room, but the optimized storage will benefit the final look and comfort of the room. Mirrored doors can, if necessary, give a feeling of increased space in the room. The dressing room can also act as a partition and thus modify the use of the space, for example to separate a bedroom from an office or from a bathroom.

22 The dressing room...

A place for organization and creation‌ The dressing room should be customized to suit the dressing habits of its users. Before going out to buy shelving or storage accessories, it is better to develop a plan, taking into account everything that will be stored there.. What will be folded, hung, or placed in a drawer? Long garments will be hung. Shirts can be stored folded or on a hanger, depending on their quality and the

storage habits of the dressing room's user. Small items (underwear, accessories, and jewelry) find their place in the drawers. Plan for space, particularly on shelves. Once your storage organization is planned, you can design your dressing room, with proportions so as to optimize space and design a space that is pleasant to look at.

Bring light to your dressing room. Bright, even lighting will bring the final touch of comfort and esthetics to your storage area. Fixed or pivoting spotlights, light bars and lighted wardrobe tubes can light up as if by magic, thanks to a central switch or motion sensor. You an also choose pretty, traditional lamps, with the only two restrictions being: use white-light bulbs, which give a more realistic representation of colors, and make sure there are no shadowy areas in the dressing room.

Meticulous finishes… Storage accessories are essential for finalizing your ideal dressing room.

They will make sure that your clothes, accessories, and jewelry are impeccably stored and presented. Here is a list of accessories not to be missed: storage boxes, baskets, sliding tie and belt holders, side hook racks, sliding pants holders, removable hanger elevator, pivoting hanger holder, sliding baskets, sliding drawers, compartments for drawers, wallmounted or sliding shoe organizers,... ...Don't forget the hangers. Although the trend is toward recycling, your dressing room will look great and your shirts will be impeccably aligned if your hangers are all of the same model and quality.

A born colourist, Sarah Lavoine imagines sunlight in a space where colors and materials resonate like a drum. For ten years, Sarah Lavoine has been producing unique dÊcors, between sobriety and warmth, silence and energy, shadow and light. An interior designer, she puts as much care into designing the curve of a lamp as on the colour scheme of a hotel, or on the soul of a private home. Founded in 2002, her agency handles construction sites from A to Z, in public or private places. In order to keep up with orders and work on her more personal projects, Sarah has surrounded herself with a team of collaborators gifted with complementary talents.. Trained in attention to detail in the Sabine Marchal nursery design firm, Sarah Lavoine then joined the firm of interior architect François Schmidt. The experience rooted in her the taste for contemporary aesthetics. Today, far from any academicism, she is an experienced professional with a singular voice in the world of design, tracing the contours of a tightrope walker's act, which favours luxury craftsmanship. François Champsaur

MCOMMEMAISON INTERACTIVE - No. 6

François Champsaur is an interior architect and designer who has been working in Paris since the late 1980s. Born in Marseille, he was steeped in the Mediterranean culture and very early on decided to apply to the Ecole supérieure des beaux-arts. He continued his education at the Ecole nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs de Paris (ENSAD) and in 1996, he opened his own interior architecture firm. Since his first creations (Maison Troisgros in Roanne, Café de l'Alma in Paris) he envisions each project as a whole, from the architecture to the smallest details. He redesigns space and volumes, works with light and contrast, designs custom furniture and textile pieces, in order to reinvent contemporary interiors tinged with elegance. His creations mimic the history and specificities of each publisher: for the furniture brand HC28, based in Beijing, François Champsaur imagined new products in the tradition of Chinese furniture (lacquer, rounded angles, geometric shapes and entrelacs). He proposes a sensual, poetic design, and resumes the brands artistic direction with a concern for consistency. The brand's development has been dazzling: twenty-two stores have been opened throughout Asia since 2008. For Pouenat Edition, he worked on geometry applied to metal: his furniture and lamps oscillate between, folds, fluid or angular lines, sets of lacquer ware and brushed metals for a sophisticated, precise effect. MCOMMEMAISON INTERACTIVE - No. 6

MaĂŤva Longvert, born in 1986, wears several hats. After a introduction to applied arts in Lyon, an associate's degree in fashion design, and a DSAA higher applied arts diploma in textile design from Roubaix, she is currently working in Toulouse where she is developing a multidisciplinary business where the common thread is her passion for repurposing. A textile designer one day, the next a graphic designer, visual artist, or participant, at 26 she has worked with many audiences: seniors, the disabled, young blind people, and children, through elementary and nursery schools. Her visual work is inspired by organic forms, motifs derived from nature to question the essence of creation. This concept takes form through materials that are considered trash which she collects in the street in order to transform them and give them a new existence. The close relationship between the "useless" material which merges and joins together with this life-creating nature is the source of her artwork. Through her projects, she champions the questioning of objects and the place they hold in our society. The idea that you can change your relationship with the world, with nature, and consumption never ceases to drive her in every form of her activity. Didier Muller Designer Educated as an architect, his work and aspirations have always been oriented toward design. In 1999, he founded the House Work -culture design- collective, in which he and his collaborators became involved in interior architecture, in designing stores, stage design, event planning, and furniture design. He makes custom pieces, limited editions or unique pieces for stores and private customers‌

Christophe Pouget Designer Christopher Pouget uses photography as a means of expression in order to tell stories about the elusive passage of time. He takes hundreds of snapshots taken at the same place at different times, over time intervals ranging from several weeks to a few years, and assembles them without changing them. Then, like a cubist painter, he recomposes his images: a poetry reveals itself from these recreated worlds, the eye lingers, wanders, and is drawn away by a

36 Focus on vintage…

1972

By Eglantine Bremond

The year of the clean slate for design. Andrée Putman exhibits her own creations Andrée Putman, female design icon, is the embodiment of freedom of expression. She revolutionized creative codes in 1972. Her father was an Ecole normal superieure graduate, and her mother was a pianist, and she very quickly dedicated herself to a career as a pianist. At 15, she emptied her childhood bedroom, furnished it with just an iron bed and adorned the white walls with a single Miro reproduction. She diverged from the path laid out for her, to develop her own aspirations. Blessed with good taste, steeped in the world of art, she began her career in dress designing, and discovered some future big names: Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Issey Miyake, Ossie Clark, Claude Montana, and Thierry Mugler. In 1972 she organized the first showroom of her own creations, in Paris. She exhibited avant-garde compositions, made of steel,

concrete, and metal cables, and had her first personal success in the public eye. She then became a grande dame of design, and her modern creations still serve as a reference in interior design. Modern urban architectural constructions The vintage videos this month, "Les bâtiments de la région parisienne", "Ecole des beaux arts" or the "Nouveau parc des princes", show the enthusiasm of the era for modern, playful construction, which appear dedicated to embodying the joy of life. It is interesting to see the difference of vision from what we have

today about these buildings, which were major symbols of modernity and novelty. Destroying everything to rebuild everything: some contemporary architects are critical of this way of making new buildings and would like to bring back renovation. MCOMMEMAISON INTERACTIVE - No. 6

The birth of home staging In 1972 Barbara Schwarz, a real estate agent, staged a particularly difficult home to sell, for the first time. The undertaking was a success: the house sold and home staging, very much in vogue today, was born. Home staging is a very specific approach to design, aimed at achieving in an interior what is called PPDC (the lowest common design denominator). The idea developed by home staging is that a home can't be sold if it is imprinted with the lives of its former residents. The traces of people unknown to the new arrivals makes it uninhabitable by new people. There is design starting point, unable to create meaning, but able to satisfy everyone, or rather not to turn them

Marking years in real estate, most rental apartments are then repainted white and former tenants, even if they do so out of good will, are asked not to leave anything behind when they move out. Some revolutions last, such as the spontaneous expression of a woman who reveals her talent, and others' success seems more ephemeral. Even if home staging is all the rage today, it should be noted that personal spaces, such as B & B's are attracting more and more audience and apartments or homes that are selling at higher prices, in luxury, are those that have been carefully decorated and tell their story.

off. It is a matter of making a clean slate on which the new residents will be able to draw their own world. The main focuses of home staging are: clearing room and saving space, maximum lighting optimization, maximum design purification, particularly with the use of white and neutral colours, depersonalizing spaces and suppressing odours.

Toilets: A new definition By Eglantine Bremond

MCOMMEMAISON INTERACTIVE - No. 6

The 2013 design trends for bathrooms examined. Designers appear to have foreseen changes in how we use these intimate places. The sophisticated forms of the new toilets take a seat in a renewed space. Focus on the coming changes.

62 Bathrooms...

An ultramodern design ‌ Toilets made of raw ceramic, the pedestal mounted on the floor, are no longer current. In 2013, toilets are floating, clean. They are suspended on the wall and seem to be levitating. Simple, they take up less space but take on an aesthetic through forms or colours that almost elevate them to works of art. Suspended on a technical wall, with the pipes hidden, they are ultramodern and

have many comfort advantages (insulating moisture and flushing noises). They sometimes come in red, black, or colours to match the surrounding decor. Their shapes bring to mind contemporary chairs, that can be found in a salon, or blocks of sculptural stone. They are no longer hidden and they look different from what we have known for so many years.

64 Bathrooms...

An open space‌ The toilets presented by designers are not isolated in a separate room, that you can close off to hide. A space-saving solution due to shrinking home sizes? Not likely, given new bathroom, vast and uncluttered, that designers have imagined for us. The toilets on display in the bathroom are simple, aesthetic. A chair sometimes can be found in this new living space, evoking the habits of court nobility at Versailles, who received visitors during their toilet. A new concept

of intimacy, unveiled, seems to be on the way. Partitions that give a glimpse between their panelling or interrupted walls seem to announce that we are no longer hiding to take care of our hygiene. Bidets, forgotten and deemed obsolete until now, are falling back into favour and regaining their privileged place in the bathroom. They too offer a high-end design. Cleanliness is on display, glorified in this new living space.

66 Bathrooms...

Cleanliness on stage‌ The bathroom is beautiful because it is impeccable. It is reminiscent of Japanese culture, where cleanliness and beauty are referred to using the same word. Japan, the country where women sometimes receive their friends, in complete intimacy, even when nature calls. In new bathrooms, each object is arranged harmoniously. Sink, toilet, and shower each have their place in a graphic composition of cleanliness. Natural hues, brown, beige, imitation wood, as well as white, symbol of purity, or red, designer and visual, are featured prominently in these new decors.

When tile is used, it often occupies entire walls, immaculate, artistic. Tiles are large and and show off their shine and cleanness, or, conversely, smaller tiles evoke Egyptian bathrooms. Walls are covered, smooth, painted, and neat. Glass partitions play with their transparency. Accessories, as practical as they are aesthetic, make the space more functional. Toilet paper is no longer stacked on the back of the toilet, but stored in a designer toiletpaper holder; coloured cylinders, or jars with plain forms. Imposing mirrors, traditional or contemporary, finish decorating the space and give it a bit of splendour.

68 Bathrooms...

A new way of living? We cannot bring up the subject of bathrooms without mentioning the tenth World Toilet Day, which was held in November. A surprising theme, which in reality is a global health issue. The lack of access to hygiene, which affects 2.5 billion people, kills. One of the main reasons for this scourge is that politi-

cal decision-makers consider this a taboo subject that belongs in the private sphere and did not become involved in this area earlier. Researchers have been solicited, in the form of a contest, to reinvent the toilets of tomorrow, in order to make them accessible and ecological in all living conditions.

Visit the site: www.livinghouse.fr

Focus‌ The concept of hygiene and the use of toilets is evolving. Modernity and revival include our own ways of living. Cleanliness, which is vital, is regaining value in our eyes. It is no longer hidden, but considered a precious commodity, as it should be.The bathroom of 2013 is attractive, studied, and functional.

Reconstituted stone An innovative material

Pool decking and coping made from reconstituted stone allow for construction that is both durable and particularly attractive, while limiting materials that are highly sought-after in design, like slate or pine decking.

MCOMMEMAISON INTERACTIVE - No. 6

Wood, slate, brick, metal, etc., are all raw, natural materials that are particularly trendy in interior and exterior design. Using a fully controlled industrial process, which enables the reconstitution and moulding of the stone, obtained from French quarries and optimizing agglomerates, French reconstituted stone manufacturers offer many interior and exterior construction products with unique and varied structures and appearances. These products are particularly easy to work with, have incomparable durability combined with ultra simple upkeep. Their exceptional durability, due to the high density of the reconstituted stone, ensures lasting constructions, including exterior applications. Frost-resistant, reconstitutedstone constructions just laugh at bad weather and maintain their original appearance. Through their very design, they offer uniform shapes and colors, ensuring perfect harmony of installation. Facing panels prove ideal for covering facades. Lighter and easier to use than natural stone elements, these facing panels provide excellent resistance against exterior weathering, while providing a highly decorative esthetic.
