from the editor’s desk PEEK INSIDE FOR THE BEST THE STATE HAS TO OFFER Welcome to the 2016 edition of Parenting New Hampshire’s Family Resource Guide, our annual compendium for Granite State parents and families. Every year when we put together the Family Resource Guide our goal is to produce a publication that you’ll reference time and time again. Whether you are a lifelong resident or have just moved into the state (welcome!) we know you will learn something new. In the 2016 edition, you’ll find articles on getting involved in your community, how to afford summer camp for your child, advice for parents going back to school, how to construct a backyard skating rink, and more. Also, check out our listings that cover everything from health and wellness providers to enrichment programs to special needs. Still can’t find what you are looking for? Go to www.parentingnh.com and click on the resources tab to access our online database that contains thousands of listings. Whether you are looking for a preschool, attraction or a pediatrician, you’ll find it there. In addition, as the seasons change our site is the place to go to find lists of the best sledding hills, swimming holes or hiking trails. We are always adding information, resources and events so you can find something fun to do with your family year-round.

Parenting New Hampshire Magazine is the state’s premier resource for parents in families statewide. More than 20,000 copies are distributed to hundreds of locations statewide each month. Check out our other publications: NH Next: Your Guide to Life After High School, Stepping Stones NH: A guidebook for people with disabilities, their families and the professionals who support them, and our brand new Summer Fun Guide, later this year. backyard ice rink

Build your own By Jacqueline Tourville

R

eady to put a different spin on winter fun? With some inexpensive building materials and a little help from Mother Nature you can turn your backyard into a skating rink.

Do-it-yourself ice rinks can be made to fit almost any yard — from a small skating patch squeezed behind the garage to a wide sheet of ice worthy of hosting a neighborhood hockey tournament. Once the temperatures drop, here’s how to give your yard a frozen makeover.

Step Choose the right location For the best rink location, scope out a relatively flat spot in your yard that is within reach of your garden hose. Ideally, this will also be a relatively shady spot, or at least one that doesn’t receive much direct sun during the day.

Step Measure your rink Use garden stakes and string to plot out your rink size; measure the dimensions. Buy enough PVC tubing and joints (both straight and corner joints) to create the desired size and shape. While you are at the home improvement store, pick up a piece of white vinyl tarp, cut large enough to overlap the rink by about a foot on each side. For example, if you are making a 20-feet x20-feet rink, have the tarp cut to at least 21-feet x21-feet. Important note: the tarp must be white. Blue or black tarps are more likely to absorb sunlight and heat up, which will put your rink at risk.

Pack the snow If there is snow on the ground, prep the rink area by shoveling until the snow depth is only a few inches. Use the lawn roller to flatten the remaining snow (or put your kids to work stamping down the snow in their boots).

Step

Lay out the rink

Put PVC tubing in place to follow the string you laid out. Connect pieces with joints to create a frame. Drape the tarp over this and push down into place to create a liner. The extra liner width should be wrapped around the PVC and tucked underneath. This helps the liner stay in place.

Step Flood the rink Hook up your garden hose and flood rink until the water level is approximately 2 to 3 inches deep. And then you wait. If New Hampshire happens to be in the grips of an arctic blast, your rink might be ready within 24 to 48 hours. Check the rink for cooling and freezing, but try not to go out for a test spin until you are certain the ice is completely frozen. Skating on ice that still has water or air bubbles trapped inside can make it crack and break.

Step Skate! Set up a wooden bench near the rink for lacing up, or pack the snowbanks around the rink into natural seats for changing skates. If you will play hockey on the rink, set up 24-foot wooden boards around the rink, wedged between the PVC pipe and snow bank (or held in place with wooden braces). The wooden barrier can stop pucks from disappearing into snowbanks and slowing down game play. Want to get really fancy? Rig up an outdoor flood light for night skating. Also, be prepared for an adjustment period. Because your backyard rink is subject to the elements, expect the ice surface to contain natural ripples or bumpiness in places. Kids (and adults) accustomed to skating indoors on a groomed rink may need to get used to the “wild ice in your backyard.

Step Maintain the ice Ready to become a human Zamboni? Once your ice is scratched and pitted after a day of fun, flood the rink with a thin coat of water and push the squeegee along the surface to work water into cracks and crevices and push away icy slush. Allow the surface to completely freeze before skating resumes. Once you see the wet sheen fade to what looks like a matte glaze, the ice is ready to go.

Step Spring cleanup Backyard ice rinks can withstand fairly warm daytime temperatures (40s, and even 50s) as long as temperatures overnight are below freezing. Once the spring warmup begins, your ice will start cracking and melting and will no longer be stable for skating. When you’re back to the puddle of water you started with, spring cleanup is a breeze. Unwrap the tarp from around the frame and lift the frame. Take the frame apart and lift tarp to help water run off. Take apart the frame and store. If possible, give your tarp a chance to completely dry before packing up so it doesn’t get moldy. The ground underneath will spring back as the weather warms. Having an ice rink on top of it all winter is really no different than being snow-covered for the season. Jacqueline Tourville is a longtime contributor to Parenting New Hampshire.

back to school Yes, you can go

O

ne of your goals might be going back to school, yet given your time away from the classroom, you’re not sure where to begin.

Whether you’ve been away for a couple of years — or a couple of decades — returning to school is easier than you might think. The hardest part is making the commitment to do it. Once you do, you may be surprised how quickly things can fall into place. Think of the obstacles you’ve been considering: lack of time, lack of money, and perhaps even lack of brainpower. Now, consider what pursuing higher education or finishing a degree started previously can help you achieve. What are your aspirations and can you attain them without that degree? Is your education the primary reason you haven’t been able to move from point A to point B or C? If so, it’s time to understand how you can indeed go back to school. You’ve got a family now, maybe a full-time job and a host of other responsibilities — so how can you possibly fit one more thing in? It may seem daunting, but like anything else worth attaining, once you set your mind on making it happen, you’ll see it’s something you can make time to do. Now, more than ever, it’s easier to pursue a degree, simply because of the many ways in which you can acquire it. For many parents, it’s hard to find child care. And with the kids already being in school or child care all day, the idea of being away from your family in the evening is not something you can do -- practically, emotionally or financially. Here’s where online education comes in. Many highly respected universities offer online degree programs that accommodate the busy lives of adult learners, who need the flexibility of accessing coursework from home. Whether it’s an associate, bachelor’s or master’s degree program you seek, there are opportunities to earn your degree anywhere you have Internet access. It’s important to thoroughly research any school you’re interested in, ensure its accreditation, its reputation and

the level of support available to you as a distance learner. While you may be most familiar with learning in a face-toface environment, you’ll be surprised by how comfortable and engaging an online degree program can be with a school that’s focused on your success and what’s best for you as an individual. You can easily learn about a school by speaking with its staff, exploring its social media presence and connecting with other students and alumni through those social platforms. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about faculty, course instruction and what’s involved in a typical course format. Ask about program outcomes and whether the school has solid career assistance in place. Staff should be interested in you – and how they can best meet your needs, not how quickly they can push you to enroll. The financial component of returning to school can be a big challenge. While you’re no doubt balancing a household budget and saving for much-desired family pursuits and needs, it can be hard to focus financially on something else that might seem like it’s just for you. It’s important to understand that it isn’t just an expenditure; it’s an investment in your future and your family’s future. Take a good look at the cost of the education you desire at many schools, and assess what you learn about each school. Determine which school will best suit your personal needs and interests, at a cost you can afford. Be sure to discuss financial aid options and explore scholarship opportunities. While you may not be eligible for the traditional scholarships given to those graduating high school, there are many available for those returning to school, regionally and locally. If you move forward and enroll in a degree program, whether in a face-to-face learning environment or online, ensure that you understand the time needed to accomplish coursework each week and plan for it. At the beginning of each term, carefully review your course syllabus and compare the busier weeks against your personal and family schedule so you can be proactive in meeting all of the needs in your life – and remember, nothing sets a better example for your kids than seeing you focused on succeeding in school, too. Sure, you think, easy to say if you’re energetic and outgoing and have no problem reaching out personably and offering your time and talents. What if you’re a quiet sort, with limited time and not quite sure of what you have to offer? The answer’s simple. Every community has needs and everyone has something they can do to help fill those needs – and what you have to offer is far more valuable than you know. First, consider your situation and what you enjoy doing. Perhaps you’re a parent working part- or full-time, and when the weekend comes, you finally have time to do something fun locally with the kids, but aren’t sure where to begin. Depending on the age and interests of your children, you can look to your town’s recreation department or community library. If you have very young children, there may well be library lap-sit programs to engage in with other families or story times for toddlers. Quite often, there are activities for families or for adults as well, such as book groups, film nights, craft activities and more. Once you get involved in such activities, you may find a way to contribute too, perhaps offering your skills in a craft area or through your knowledge of nature or something related to your professional life. Perhaps the library has a friends’ group, allowing you to focus on supporting the needs and activities of the library in a connected way with others. There are often opportunities to volunteer, helping out at an annual book sale, children’s reading programs and more. You may be surprised by how much

your offer to help will be appreciated. Are your kids at the age where they’ll enjoy organized sports? Check out your town’s recreation programs, and see where family interests align with what’s offered. If you’re a sports enthusiast as well, these programs are always in need of dedicated volunteers to coach, to assist teams, work in snack bars and promote program activities and needs. Kids’ activities beyond sports, also offers parents an opportunity to meet and interact with many of their own children’s classmates, and connect with those kids’ families in a greater way. If your child has an interest in Scouting, dance, Lego League, 4-H, or any of the terrific activities available in most communities, consider taking on a volunteer role, leading or assisting a group. You’ll not only meet a lot of new people, but you’ll also create some wonderful memories with your own child and contribute to something pretty great, too. If your children are of school age, are there parent organizations, such as parent-teacher groups, you can get involved in? Maybe you aren’t quite interested in this sort of commitment, but would like to help more on a classroom level. There are often opportunities to assist with ongoing activities in the classroom, chances to lend your expertise or share interests in your child’s classroom as a guest reader, party assistant, speaker or in providing an in-class activity for students. Looking for something specifically for you? Local churches often have men’s and women’s groups that support the parish and allow you to meet others who share your beliefs and interests. See if your town has community service groups associated with larger organizations, such as the Lions Club or Kiwanis. Some communities have local service clubs or groups that gather around a specific area of interest. Your town or city hall may be the place to start when seeking information on groups in your community. Interested in politics? There’s no better way to become fully immersed in the activities of a town than by following political activities in town and becoming active through an elected position. You’ll not only contribute to the well-being of where you live, you’ll also develop a far deeper knowledge of the inner workings of your community and the ways that everyone can help. Soon, you’ll be the person people ask how they, too, can get involved in the community. Pamme Boutselis is the mom of four now-grown kids, a serial volunteer and writer. Bring order to the How to help your child with ADD/ADHD succeed in school • By Mary Ellen Hettinger

I

n families where a child’s brain works differently – one that feels bombarded by stimuli that he or she can’t filter out – the massive change involved in getting up and out early, managing homework and tight schedules, can be the stuff of nightmares.

“For children with ADD or ADHD, transitions can be very challenging,” Sue West of Organize NH said. Strategic planning and establishing a routine for the entire family is key. Diane Connell, EdD, a professor of special education at Rivier University, said children need to understand their brains work differently. Once they understand what this means, you can help them find ways to “self regulate.” “Most people with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder, leading to inattention) or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, which includes hyperactivity and impulsivity) are relieved to understand how their brain is different, especially when you talk about the brain strengths they have,” Connell said. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses; the weakness for a child with ADD/ADHD is paying attention when the teacher talks. “Children need to understand their brain first, so they can ‘buy in’ to finding ways for self-regulation,” Connell said.

VISUAL CUES HELP KIDS STAY ON TRACK

SPECIAL NEEDS

Children need to get used to the idea that schedules change, West said. Make it easier on everyone with visual reminders. Children who can read need a list or chart, something on a door or wall and bathroom mirror. Older kids with phones can set reminders there. Have lots of clocks, West adds, “because that helps wake up the brain. They can see that 15 minutes have gone by and I have 20 minutes left.” (Parents, expect to monitor time and tasks closely the first few weeks to see what’s working.)

28 www.parentingnh.com family resource book

“The more [clocks] you have, the more likely they will look and see them.” At difflearn.com, you can buy a clock that shows bright red when there are 10 minutes left. “The time left gets ‘skinnier’ and you see the red. Kids get a sense of time passing and that attention piece is critical. Plus they don’t have to know how to tell time,” West said. Kids with ADHD need something “in their face, since their sense of time is not as strong; they start daydreaming and get distracted. A list in front of you is a gentle reminder of the next thing.”

Working memory, West adds, can be poor, meaning they can’t hold many things in their mind at once, so use posters and charts so they can see what’s next, that they haven’t got their lunch, haven’t fed the dog, etc.

chaos GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP What time does bedtime have to be? Teens in particular need more sleep than they typically get. Everyone’s brain needs to wind down to ensure a restful night, and using electronics such as computers, video games

and TVs — i.e., “screen time” — has the opposite effect. Set a time to unplug and stick to it. For overall stress relief and focus, yoga and/ or a mindfulness practice — i.e., meditation — is soothing. Reading out loud before bed also helps everyone wind down, so they can rest up for the next day.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT There are other strategies in addition to organizing you can try to help manage ADD/ ADHD. Dr. Robin Bruck of Bedford Chiropractic Associates said chiropractic treatment can help eliminate things that stress the nervous system. “ADHD is a combination of an overactive nervous system (which controls the function of every cell, organ and tissue in the body), and a brain difference (where it’s tough to filter out other distracting sounds, thoughts and emotions). “When your spine is misaligned due to injury, poor posture and/or muscle weakness, these ‘subluxations’ irritate your nervous system and interfere with signals to the brain. Allergies, food sensitivities and exposure to

toxins also stress the nervous system,” said Dr. Bruck. “Chiropractic care keeps your spine and nervous system healthy.” Plus, Dr. Bruck adds, certain foods lead to poor health, such as refined carbohydrates and most sugars, processed foods and those with additives. “The entire family should enjoy mostly lean proteins, nuts, vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. If you don’t eat salmon or tuna, supplements of Omega-3 and -6 fatty acids are helpful because they provide fuel to your cells.” “Enjoying food in its most natural state,” she said, “is an important element of a wellness lifestyle.” Alan Brown is an ADD coach who blogs and gives advice on his website, ADDCrusher.com. He said the ADD/ADHD person’s brain wiring is best fueled by a highprotein breakfast to last until lunch, and calls omega-3 and omega-6 supplements “brain boosters.” You can also talk to your family physician about exploring an elimination diet to see if taking something out of their diet or a different way of eating could help your child.

For parents who have ADD/ADHD (or think they do) In adults, many of whom have never been diagnosed with ADD, Sue West said, their memories are affected. Multitasking is self-defeating. “Many don’t want to take medication,” according to West, so strategies like getting exercise and meditation can help. Coaching in “executive functions” such as planning and time management helps, too. Chaotic brains need clutter-free environments; get help from a professional organizer if necessary. Alan Brown said his ADD causes him to be “addictive” in his use of screen time, whether gaming, TV or the computer. This inhibits restorative sleep. But he’s broken the habit. If you get sucked into the Internet vortex via Facebook, or are hooked on latenight TV, Brown suggests listing your electronic habits in order of the time you spend on them. Identify which one you can reduce or eliminate. Then “assign a new, more productive or enriching activity to take its place,” Brown said. Minding your use of media and gadgets is important. “Research shows that kids are stressed by the feeling of having to compete for attention with their parents’ iPhones, Facebook feeds and so on,” he said. Brown adds that when he needs to focus, he “labels” it "what I’m doing now." When his attention wanders, he asks himself if this is a trivial distraction, is it something that’s important but not urgent, or is it “what I’m doing now” to bring himself back to the task at hand.

after school, so Professor Connell doesn’t like the idea of doing homework just then. Activities such as sports, martial arts, and Girl or Boy Scouts are great outlets. “Scouts and martial arts once a week are structured programs, where kids earn badges or belts. Plus there is the social component,” she said. Many kids have trouble with boundaries, so the structure and emphasis on respect in these activities, and in sports, help them gain control of their minds and bodies.

summer camp You can afford

(Hint: It pays to be an early bird)

Look for early registration discounts before the summer season. Attend camp fairs and open houses for discounts and raffles. Send siblings to the same camp; most offer sibling discounts. Apply for financial aid. Many organizations, from the Boys & Girls Club to Girl Scouts to Y camps, offer camperships or partial scholarships.

S

ummer camp, whether day or overnight (“sleepaway” or “residential”), offers so many benefits for all children: new experiences and friendships, and “unplugged” adventures in nature.

The good news is there are affordable options for everyone. Jacob Kaiser, Camp and Family Director at the YMCA Allard Center and Camp HalfMoon in Goffstown, says that Camp HalfMoon offers “lots of variety under the same banner,” so you don’t have to move your child from day camp to day camp all summer to find something they’ll love, and the chance to try something new. “We offer sports, arts and humanities, gym and tennis, plus field trips, etc. Although you don’t have to be a member of the YMCA, there are discounts for Y Youth members,” he adds. Plus, buses and before- and after-care (from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.) are included in the price. But Kaiser cautions that cost shouldn’t be the primary reason for choosing a camp. “You want a quality program for the best outcome for your kids. At Camp HalfMoon we use our core values to run the program, and have a one-to-six staff ratio.” Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains offers one resident camp and several day camps. Camperships are offered on the basis of need, but also

Most camps offer a discount if you register for multiple weeks up front. This also saves a spot in the program you want so your kids aren't disappointed. If your child needs to ride the bus to day camp, is the cost included? If extra, can you carpool? Consider camps near your workplace instead of home. If lunch, snacks, field trips and before or after care are included in the price, that may be a better deal, though initially more expensive, than a day camp where those items cost extra or are unavailable. Can you volunteer, work at camp, or barter services? All camps need nurses, for example. Is your child old enough to be a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) or a certified lifeguard?

LinkedIn means

business How to get connected so you don’t miss out • By Mary Ellen Hettinger

I

f you had 24/7 access to the best networking tool and could get another professional to introduce and refer you, wouldn’t you?

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES & RETAIL SALES

The powerful tool that can do all this is as close as your mobile device and computer: LinkedIn. It’s free. And if you’re not on it, whether job hunting or growing a business, you’re missing out on a major opportunity. Who’s on LinkedIn? Some 330 million users in 200-plus companies worldwide, who are educated, affluent and influential businesspeople. Ninety-three percent of American members are college graduates.

WHY CONNECT ON LINKEDIN? The best networking and social media happens one-to-one. On LinkedIn, through your connections and their connections, you’re only a few degrees from other professionals you’d like to meet. LI lets you leverage this powerful network. 73 percent of members belong to network with other professionals 70 percent are on LI to foster their professional identity Two out of three members use LI to keep up with industry news and trends Here are six reasons why you should be on LinkedIn, according to Lisa Landry of Savvy Workshop in Manchester: Develop a professional brand and identity Expand your network; stay in touch as people change companies Interact with other professionals It is a business intelligence tool Receive targeted news delivered daily Stay on top of industry trends by following and participating in groups J. T. O’Donnell, found of Careerealism. com, said 90 percent of companies looking to hire go to LI first, and 97 percent of recruiters.

YOUR PROFILE, YOUR BRAND LinkedIn profiles typically appear in the top search results when people search by name. To create a savvy LI profile, include summary, experience, education, awards, skills, recommendations, endorsements, and a professional headshot

family resource book 2016 www.parentingnh.com 39

5 steps to LinkedIn success Turn off activity broadcasts while editing your profile. Afterward, go back to Privacy Controls and turn them back on. Have a compelling headline; keep it short but succinct and use keywords. Share the love! Endorse your connections. Give and get recommendations. Have a professional, recent headshot.

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES & RETAIL SALES

O’Donnell said your headline should be compelling and keyword optimized. Your summary is your “value proposition.” Your profile is your virtual or digital resume and gives you credentials. It tells your professional story: your goals, objective, background, interests and aspirations. Landry suggests writing in the first person as if introducing yourself. Landry, who gives presentations for corporations and nonprofits on LinkedIn, said LI takes you through the process and helps you “populate” each section. “Think of your profile page as your web page; use keywords, mention your skills,” she said. When writing your skills, “Think about how you want to be known, because LI will use these terms to suggest related skills -- and invite your connections to endorse you for these skills.” Activities include anything you’ve done on LI: updated profile, invited people to connect, added professional works or volunteer activities, joined LI Groups, commented or shared an article. Your activities can be seen by your connections. So, when adding to or reworking your profile, “turn off” your activity broadcast until the new one is saved. If you’re looking for a new job, for example, you don’t want your current employer to see. Simply move your cursor over your profile photo in the top right corner of your home page, to see Privacy and Settings, and click Manage. Then move down to see Settings options.

MAKE THE CONNECTION Many users get connected to LinkedIn by being invited, but you don’t have to be. Just go to www.linkedin. com to get started. After that, you can look for people to connect to, and invite others you know to join. LI has a stock message for extending invitations to connect—don’t just use that. By clicking on the small “down” arrow next to a person’s name, you’ll get an expanded spot to explain how you know them, and personalize the invitation. Use it! It’s fun to rack up connections, but remember why you’re on this site: to promote your brand, be thought of as an influencer in your industry, etc. The best practice is only to connect with someone you would recommend or introduce to someone else. If you get an invitation to connect with someone you

don’t know, there’s nothing wrong with replying, “How do I know you?” or indicating that you don’t connect until you know someone or have worked with them. (Your credibility is on the line.) This also goes back to the importance of personalizing invitations: “We met at the social media summit, etc.” (By the way, you can disconnect from someone, and they won’t know that you removed them.)

RECOMMENDATIONS AND ENDORSEMENTS The more endorsements for specific skills that you have, the more search engine optimization (SEO) you’ll trigger, because skills also act as keywords. Share the love by endorsing others. J.T. O’Donnell recommends “endorsement Mondays,” where you endorse 10 connections each week. LI “suggests” endorsements that connections can click on or ignore. But you’ll have to ask for recommendations, which are valuable for “credentialing” your profile. Ask someone you know well. All they need to do is write is a few sentences, and you can give them suggestions. Reciprocate, and the recommendations will show as activity on both profiles. Be proactive and recommend someone; they’ll usually reciprocate. Just as with invitations to connect, your credibility is on the line. Only endorse or recommend someone whom you would happily introduce to others.

GROUPS EXPAND THE LINKEDIN EXPERIENCE EXPONENTIALLY LI Groups offer so many opportunities for driving intelligence. Going to a conference? Events and trade shows are excellent places to improve relationships, make new connections and expand your network. If the trade show has a group, you can join to prenetwork and invite people to your booth. Will your competitors be there? What are they doing? Who do you want to meet? Afterward, continue the conversation by inviting those you’ve met to connect. Personalize the invitation by reminding them where you met (within a few days of the event).

VIRTUAL WATERCOOLER Trade shows and conferences are great opportunities to network, find like-minded people and share best practices. Mine these connections throughout the year when you have a question or need help. LI can be your virtual watercooler for sharing and interacting. To be competitive and credible in today’s virtual, 24/7 business environment, you must be on LinkedIn. It’s the best, easiest, and most respected forum, and most of the features are free. Mary Ellen Hettinger, APR, is an award-winning reporter, editor and writer, and is an accredited public relations professional.

40 www.parentingnh.com family resource book 2016

How to take a professional headshot Whether you need it for LinkedIn or a company website, a recent professional photo is important. People must be able to recognize you. Facebook-style pictures or selfies are too informal, and won’t do anything for your credibility. But why not have an informal shot taken in the same session for personal use? Our resident expert is Kendal J. Bush of Kendal J. Bush Photography. She shoots the covers for Parenting New Hampshire. A flattering haircut a must, but not too short — the photo will look more like you if it has “grown in” just a bit. Be careful with your makeup — you want a professional, not evening, look. Even if your style is all natural, Bush recommends extra emphasis to bring out your eyes. Apply concealer under foundation to even out skin tone and cover up blemishes. Bush likes to frame women’s skin with a white background to brighten complexions with a warm glow. Now it’s time for your closeup!

What to wear: If your profession tends to be more formal (law, for example), dress appropriately. • Women should wear a solid dark or black blouse, not a white one. V-necks are most flattering. • Men should wear a dark blue or black jacket with a button-down, light-colored shirt. “I have clients bring a few different tops for a headshot, to see what works best. Or maybe they want one informal shirt and then a dressier blouse,” Bush said. No turtlenecks — they make your neck disappear. Have at least one open neckline. Accessories are fine, but not too many or too large — shiny earrings the size of salad plates will compete with your face. If you wear eyeglasses, have some shots taken with and some without. If you wear them all the time, you’ll look more like yourself if they’re on. But if your eyeglasses don’t have an anti-glare coating, you may do better without them. The photographer can tell you what’s best. BTW, your Pekinese is adorbs, but Pikachu doesn’t belong in your picture — unless you’re a pet groomer. The great thing about digital photography is the instant gratification. Although they won’t be finished photos, the photographer can show you different angles as they are shot to give you ideas and make suggestions for poses. Finally, LinkedIn is all about showing your best, most professional and businesslike self to the world, so smile!

BEST COMFORT FOOD DISH: MR. MAC’S MACARONI AND CHEESE Winter is still here and that means it is time for comfort food. Not just any comfort food – I’m talking about macaroni and cheese, that ooey gooey, carbohydrate-loaded, yummy, delicious family favorite. No one makes better macaroni and cheese than Mr. Mac’s in Hooksett (sorry, Ma) and believe me, I’ve tried them all. You can choose from the classic cheesy pasta dish to varieties that include meat, vegetables, even jalapenos and “lobstah.” My favorite is the Cheese Please!, a combination of shredded cheddar, muenster, gruyere, and a touch of Pecorino and topped with American Cheese. Throw your diet out the window for a day and indulge. Besides, you know the kids will love it.

BEST NEW WINTER TRADITION: TOURING THE ICE CASTLES This winter, for the third consecutive year, the place to be seen (and perhaps the best place to take a winter family photo) was the Ice Castles in Lincoln. The acre-sized winter wonderland is hand-crafted using only icicles and water, and resembles organic formations found in nature, like those of frozen waterfalls, glaciers or ice caves. Kids love exploring the ice maze and tunnels. And when the glaciers are lit up at night with LED lights, the effect is breathtaking. The ice castles are constructed and open depending on the weather. Details for winter 2017 have not yet been announced. This attraction is so awesome, you may be able to forget how much you hate winter for a while.
