Task force seeks VMGR-252 flight refuels HMX-1 volunteers for during trans-Atlantic mission male/female ground combat integration study

Female Marines stationed at Cherry Point have an opportunity to become pioneers as the Marine Corps takes the next step in its deliberate, measured approach to achieving integration of females into combat arms units and occupational fields. The Ground Combat Element Integrated Task Force recruiting team will present briefs at the Two Rivers Theater here today seeking volunteers to become members of an experimental GCE to study the unit’s performance in realistic training environments per Marine Administrative Message 252/14. Briefs will be conducted for eligible noncommissioned officers from 8 – 10 a.m. and from 1 – 3 p.m. Separate briefs will be conducted for eligible E-1 to E-3 Marines from 10 a.m. – noon and from 3 ¬ 5 p.m. The Ground Combat Element Integrated Task Force, which was announced March 2014, will be made up of approximately 500 male and female Marines and is slated to activate at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., June 2014. Male and female Marines will take part in a research study that will assess performance of integrated ground combat arms units and establish physical, physiological and performance standards for assignment to ground combat arms occupational specialties. The GCEITF is one of the efforts of the Marine Corps Force Integration Plan to integrate female Marines into combat arms units and occupational specialties. During the recruiting briefs, eligible Marines will receive an overview of the initiative as well as an informed consent brief where they will learn exactly what will be expected of them and learn the insand-outs of the mission before making the decision to volunteer. Following the brief there will be a question and answer session where Marines can review, ask questions and make an informed decision on whether participation in the program is right for them. Note that only those who fall into the eligible population will be allowed to attend the informed consent briefs that follow the overview. Enlisted Marines must be sergeants or below and have less than nine years of service in order to be eligible to volunteer. Male Marines may only volunteer to participate within their primary military occupational specialty. Female Marines can volunteer to participate in any one of the following combat arms occupations: rifleman, light armored vehicle crewman, machine gunner, mortarman, infantry assaultman, antitank missileman, field artillery cannoneer, amphibious assault vehicle See VOLUNTEERS page A7

Koltick, commanding officer of VMGR-252. “Not only did we provide the aerial refueling for the Ospreys, but we also assisted them in traversing the long distance and helped them with long range navigation.” The seven-hour flight is easily accomplished by the Marine Corps’ largest aircraft, but the smaller Ospreys need assistance to make the trip due to their

Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s VPP recognizes and partners with businesses and worksites that show excellence in occupational safety and health. VPP is a voluntary partnership with OSHA developed in 1982 to address worker safety and health issues and expand worker protection through the implementation of proactive, performance based elements. The four main components of a VPP are management leadership and employee involvement; worksite analysis; hazard prevention and control; and safety and health training. With the four components in place, leaders can focus on creating a proactive environment instead of a reactive safety environment. “These programs create an exemplary workplace by allowing everyone to get involved,” said Edward Scott, the deputy director of safety and standardization aboard the air station. “Our goal with this program is to make our workplaces the safest places we can for everyone.”

Three KC-130J Super Hercules from Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 left Cherry Point May 27 for a week-long deployment in support of Marine Helicopter Squadron 1 as the helicopter squadron completed its first trans-Atlantic flight in the squadron’s MV-22B Ospreys. Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point’s Fire and Emergency Services Division recently earned the title Small Fire Department of the Year in the Marine Corps for their hard work and dedication throughout fiscal year 2013. Fire departments across the Department of Defense submitted compilations of accomplishments for the year, and each service branch and the Defense Logistics Agency selected one winner each who then went on to compete for the title of Department of Defense Small Fire Department of the Year. The annual award recognizes the DoD’s most outstanding small fire department for achieving the highest degree of excellence in mission support and fire protection management. “The department has achieved so many great things this year, but you have one page of bulleted statements to prove to the Marine Corps and the Department of Defense that your fire department deserves to win,” said Chief R.T. Completing tasks and procedures in all areas of the criteria heightened the department’s chances of being chosen for the award, and more importantly, the firefighters ensured the safety of the air station. CenturyLink wins MCCS contract CenturyLink, Inc. recently won a contract sponsored by the Marine Corps Community Services headquarters in Quantico, Va., to design, procure, configure and upgrade all equipment necessary to provide MCCS with a virtual private network. The one-year contract, which includes four one-year options, is valued at up to $3.5 million over the next five years. 53rd Interservice Riﬂe Championship The 53rd Annual Interservice Rifle Championship Match will be held from July 5-13 at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., in order to promote the competition-in-arms program. The championship will be held at the Calvin A. Lloyd Range Complex, Weapons Training Battalion, Training Command. Phase one will begin today from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Phase two will begin Friday at 8 a.m. Phase three will be held July 13 at 6 p.m. as part of the interservice banquet and presentation of awards. All teams and individual competitors must confirm intent to participate in the matches by registering via the civilian marksmanship website at www.odcmp.com no later than 3 p.m. today.

Female Marines and dress blues As a part of the Marine Corps’ expanding field testing, in the upcoming months, more female Marines will wear a version of the male dress blue coat with the mandarin collar during a test of the new prototype. Depending on the results of the uniform wear test, the Marine Corps Uniform Board will determine whether the look should become the service-wide standard. Women in the National Capital Region who serve in Marine Corps bands, as Marine recruiters or who work at Marine Barracks Washington will wear the new prototype jacket beginning in late summer or early fall of this year and continue for approximately six months. The test was designed to achieve uniformity in appearance and improve functionality during ceremonies and parades. The results of the expanded coat testing will be reported to the Marine Corps Uniform Board who will forward recommendations to the commandant for his approval. If the new jacket is approved, female Marines everywhere could be wearing them as early as 2015.

Three food service specialists who support Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point’s mess hall competed in the Chef of the Quarter competition here May 29. The competition is designed to test the abilities of food service specialists from units at Cherry Point including Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Wing Support Squadron 271 and Marine Wing Support Squadron 274. The chefs are required to prepare, cook and display food for judges. The purpose of the competition is to allow food service personnel who excel at their job to display their skills, said Master Sgt. Dwain M. Johnson, the field mess chief with MWSS-271. When the Marines are not actively engaged in the competition, they feed more than 2,000 Marines every day. During the competition, attendees sampled a variety of foods prepared by the chefs prepared with themes like “Backyard Barbeque” and “Cinco de Mayo,” but the one that won the judges over was “Beach and Ocean Frenzy.” Dazzling the judges with seashells, shrimp kabobs and a tea made with the extract of an orchid was Lance Cpl. Bianca Sanders. Sanders earned the first place trophy for this quarter’s competition. Sanders prepared rice, spicy shrimp and vegetable medley with pineapples and green and red bell peppers in seashells, stuffed clams and a stuffed sugar cookie for dessert. A first time competitor, the Fayetteville, N.C., native got her inspiration from times she spent with her family on the beach, experiences she had while deployed with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and her overall love for the beach. “I wanted (the menu) to be close and true to my heart,” said Sanders. “I also wanted it to be simple enough for me to actually carry out.”

“When the going gets tough, the tough get going,” is a saying that many of us have probably heard a time or two before, I often ponder on how the tough get going. The cliché phrase leaves room for the “tough” to choose one of two paths, they can chose to flee with their tail between their legs and cower down or they can face the impending challenge head on with full determination to succeed. We are much like the “tough” in our phrase of discussion. Life is full of challenges, we can back down and let our circumstances get the best of us or we can batten down the hatches and face the storms of life boldly. Oftentimes in life we fail to complete given objectives and receive our reward because we are afraid or uncertain of what lies before us. Life is full of questions that we must ask ourselves on a daily basis. However, there is one question that I believe everyone needs to ask themselves on a daily basis and that is, “Are you willing to complete the task by any means necessary?” When I think about the question above, I cannot help but think about Jesus and his moment of contemplation in the garden of Gethsemane while praying to His father. Jesus had a very dif-

ficult task before Him, He was to be humiliated, tortured and crucified on an old rugged cross for the sins of the world, even the very ones that set up his capture. While Jesus was in prayer He asked, that the cup, his death on the cross be taken away from him. In the midst of deciding whether or not to complete the difficult task that was before him, Jesus uttered the following to the Father, “not my will but your will be done.” Jesus could have very well passed the buck to Peter who was there waiting on him while he prayed, however that task that was given was specific to him and he knew that he had to complete that task no matter what. We must not pass off tasks that are specific to us when the job seems to be difficult and the outcome bleak. Jesus completed his assigned task and was ultimately rewarded for his due diligence and the same applies to us, in the long run we will be rewarded for our perseverance. We must operate at our fullest capacity and set out to accomplish that which is before us and complete that task by any means necessary. This does not mean take shortcuts, it simply means that we must pull up our bootstraps and prepare for the challenges before us and push to the desired outcome. Sergeant Major Golf Tournament returns to Cherry Point

Golfers from all over the United States cleaned their clubs for the annual Sergeants Major Golf Tournament held at the Sound of Freedom Golf Course here. The tournament was played in four-person super ball format, meaning after every player takes a swing, the team plays the best lie. The sold-out event was open to the public and hosted more than 100 participants. “I believe they call this event the Sergeants Major Golf Tournament because sergeants major embrace everyone,” said Sgt. Maj. Christopher G. Robinson of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. “Everyone who comes out is a part of the family.” The golf tournament gave participants a chance to build camaraderie and to meet the Cherry Point sergeant major, Sgt. Maj. Benjamin L. Pangborn, and Robinson, who welcomed golfers to the event. “The goal is to come out and share our experiences from life,” said Robinson. “In my foursome alone, we have a retired gunnery sergeant, a sergeant major, a newly-promoted sergeant and me.” Each year, the event creates a type of reunion for Marines past and present to meet up and swap stories, according to Pangborn. After the opening remarks, golf carts sped out for the shotgun start; each team started at the same time but from different holes. There were plenty of chances to win prizes within the tournament as well. Each par 3 hole served as a location for closest to the pin competitions. There were also longest drive, straightest drive and longest putt holes. At the end of play Matthew Lindauer, Jimmy Hicks, William Smith and Joshua Gloye won the tournament with a score of 59, hitting 13 strokes under par earning $60 each. “Even if you are not the best golfer, a bad day at the gold course is better than any day at work,” said Pangborn with a grin.

F-35 achieves three major flight test milestones on same day

COURTESY STORY EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., May 29, 2014 - In three separate flight tests on May 27, F-35 Lightning II aircraft demonstrated air-to-air combat capability, completed the first flight test with the next level software load and accomplished a landing at the maximum test speed and drop rate. In the Point Mugu Sea Test Range airspace off the Central California coast, an F-35B demonstrated the jet’s air-to-air combat capability when it sequentially engaged two aerial targets with two AIM-120 advanced medium range air-to-air missiles during a weapon delivery accuracy mission. Test pilot Lt. Col. Andrew Allen tracked two maneuvering drone targets, making the very first dual AMRAAM shot from any F-35 variant, and the first live AMRAAM shot from the F-35B short take off and vertical landing variant. “The U.S. Marine Corps, which operates F-35Bs, will be the first military service branch to attain combat-ready initial operational capability in 2015,” said J.D. McFarlan, Lockheed

Martin’s vice president for F-35 Test & Verification. “This weapon delivery accuracy test highlighted the air combat capability that will give Marine aviators a decisive combat edge in contested airspace.” The F-35’s internally-carried AIM-120 AMRAAMs are a beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile capable of all-weather day-and-night operations and considered a “fire-and-forget” missile using active target radar guidance. Flying from Edwards Air Force Base, an F-35A flew a 2hour mission with the first-ever load of Block 3i hardware and software. Block 3i is the next level of capability and is planned to support U.S. Air Force F-35A IOC in 2016. The F-35C, designed for aircraft carrier operations, completed a landing at its maximum sink speed to test the aircraft’s landing gear, airframe and arrestment system at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md. “Five sorties were conducted, building up the maximum sink rate test condition of 21.4 feet per second, which represents the maximum sink speed planned for this

test,” McFarlan said. During the tests, the F-35C did three arrestments, several touch and goes and one bolter. The landings demonstrated structural readiness for arrested landings on an aircraft carrier at sea. Fleet-wide, the F-35 has, to date, amassed more than 17,000 flight hours, with all three variant aircraft at the F-35 Integrated Training Center at Eglin AFB, Fla., surpassing the 5,000-hour milestone this week. The F-35 Lightning II, a 5th generation fighter, combines advanced low observable stealth technology with fighter speed and agility, fully fused sensor information, network-enabled operations and advanced sustainment. Three distinct variants of the F-35 will replace the A-10 and F-16 for the U.S. Air Force, the F/A-18 for the U.S. Navy, the F/A-18 and AV-8B Harrier for the U.S. Marine Corps, and a variety of fighters for at least 10 other countries. Following the U.S. Marine Corps’ planned 2015 IOC, the U.S. Air Force and Navy intend to attain IOC in 2016 and 2018, respectively.

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION BEAUFORT, S.C. - Marine Attack Training Squadron 203 detached from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, for training aboard MCAS Beaufort, May 9 through May 22. The training benefited both Marine Aircraft Group 31 and VMAT203. Because MCAS Cherry Point hosted a three-day air show May 16-18, VMAT-203 wouldn’t have had the freedom of open skies to train. “The value in this exercise is that we are able to continue training pilots on the platform,” said Sgt. Maj. Michael Johnson, the sergeant major of VMAT-203. “We probably would have lost three or four days’ worth of training at minimum without coming here.” VMAT-203 is a training squadron for AV-8B Harriers, which are single-engine ground-attack aircraft with vertical or short takeoff and landing capabilities. Despite

primarily functioning as attack aircraft, pilots are required to be proficient in air-to-air fighter combat as well. The squadron brought instructor pilots, student pilots and familiarization student for the exercise. Familiarization students flew with instructors in the two-seater trainer version of Harriers, TAV-8B, to get experience with the aircraft before flying on their own. “This detachment helped us get not only the air to air training that we needed, but also allowed for familiarization training with newer pilots,” said Maj. Trevor Felter, operations officer for VMAT203. “This detachment also helps MCAS Beaufort and Marine Aircraft Group 31 prepare for the F35 Joint Strike Fighter through an understanding of the vertical takeoff and landing patterns which the Harrier shares with the JSF.” The mission of the squadron is to effectively prepare aviators to operate the Harrier in the Fleet Marine Force.

Maintaining a military lifestyle is sometimes stressful and a little overwhelming, but with the help of Marine Corps Family Team Building, military spouses got a day off to explore nature during a Spouses Outdoor Exploration Day May 30 at Ordnance Point Park here. MCFTB is a department under Cherry Point Marine and Family Programs that provides Marines and their families with resources to aid in the development of personal growth and readiness for challenges associated with the Marine Corps. More than 50 spouses came to participate in the different activities available to them. Some of the events included kayaking, paddle boarding and yoga. “What I liked about the exploration day was that I was able to do things that I have never done before,” said Valerie Howell, a military spouse from Cherry Point. “I got to do yoga, and the paddle boards were awesome. I think I could have been on the paddle boards all day.” Amy Zier, the readiness and deployment support trainer with MCFTB said she wants to encourage spouses to try new things, experience

new ways to stay healthy, reduce stress, escape from daily grind, learn a new hobby and gain self-confidence. Zier prides herself in offering these services to the residents of Cherry Point. She said she loves seeing all the spouses come together and having a good time. “In my role as the readiness and deployment support program trainer for MCFTB Cherry Point, my goal is to offer workshops and special events that empower and educate as well as provide opportunities for fun and networking before, during and after deployments,” she said. The spouses who attended the event laughed, experienced new things and made new friends. “This was my first time attending the outdoor exploration day and I most definitely would attend again,” said Howell. “I think an event like this gives spouses an opportunity to get out and meet other people and to step out of their comfort zone and try something new.” MCFTB worked hard to provide the military spouses with a unique experience, and the spouses recognized their efforts. “I think the Marine Corps Family Team Building did a fantastic job at this event,” said Howell. “It was very relaxing and exciting and I absolutely

Future of communications: Increasing situational awareness for ground Marines

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Communication is an essential piece of the Marine Air Ground Task Force. Commanders rely on the effectiveness of the communication equipment available to their unit to collect information and make timely decisions during the developments of ongoing operations. Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Marine Aircraft Group 29 participated in a brief and demonstration discussing potential communications capabilities available for Lockheed Martin KC-130J May 28. The capability enables internet access and live video streaming from the KC-130’s cameras to troops on the ground or abroad via satellite. Captain Robert A. Doss III, the 26th MEU assistant communications officer and a brief attend-

ee, said “The ability to provide situational awareness at the squad leader level is important.” Live video streaming would enable squad leaders to adjust plans and brief their subordinates based on information they receive as a situation changes during an operation. “The demo presented an option that can provide more bandwidth and give us more options during long distance operations,” said Doss. Using satellites to access the internet from the KC-130s, the communications Marines aboard the aircraft have a higher bandwidth, which enables more reliable internet access and a larger amount of data to be transferred from the aircraft to the ground. “Right now all we have for operations is voice communication,” said Doss. “Training has proven that is too small.” Troops on the ground rely on a pilot’s first-hand account and perspective during

an operation to try and understand the events and pieces of the mission. “What we have right now is a thin straw to pass information through, so the information isn’t a continuous and reliable stream,” said Doss. “This capability we’re looking into is more like a garden hose. It isn’t perfect, but it provides more information at a steadier rate.” Major Russell A. Belt, the 26th MEU communications officer and another brief attendee, said there is still potential to improve beyond this available technology, but right now this is what’s available and reliable. “[The Marine Corps] view ourselves as the nation’s crisis response force,” said Belt. “It’s important that we figure out how to maximize that transfer of information to Marines before they hit the ground during an operation, so those Marines will have improved situational awareness.”

Situations can change and adjust rapidly as an operation evolves. A Marines situational awareness provides him with an understanding of those changes and he is able to make timely decisions in accordance with the new situation. “We want to continue to improve our effectiveness and keep Marines prepared for operations, because traveling from one objective to another a situation can change dramatically, particularly during long flights,” said Belt. The capability provides a continuous stream of information to squad leaders over a long distance. This keeps them aware no matter the distance they are from the objective. “It’s more robust communication and it significantly increases command and control for commanders,” said Doss.

Volunteers will be screened after their volunteer submission has been submitted to ensure they meet the prerequisites of the task force and Headquarters Marine Corps. If selected, the volunteers will be notified of their selection no later than June 13, 2014. Selected female volunteers will receive orders to appropriate entry-level schools during July 2014. Following graduation, the female Marines will receive orders to report to the task force in September 2014. Female and male Marine volunteers are authorized to request to be dropped from training or from the task force at any time. This request will not lead to consequences to future retention, assignment or promotion opportunities. The Marine Corps will assess the task force from July 1, 2014 to June 20, 2015 in order to help better inform and assign female Marines to ground combat arms units and jobs in the future. While it is still too early to tell if workplace injuries on Cherry Point have decreased, Cmdr. Alejandro Alvarado, the installation’s safety manager, believes VPP is essential in reducing the number of workplace accidents, he said. “From my experience at other commands using the VPP, I have seen that the program works and I have seen that the numbers go down,” said Alvarado. Cherry Point, which currently holds “merit site” status, is now on its way to earning a “star” status through the program, said Scott. Merit sites are evaluated every 18-24 months. Star status is the highest and most challenging VPP participation category only given to sites that achieve and maintain injury and illness rates at or below the national average in their respective industries. Some of the benefits of earning star status include dramatic decreases in workplace injury and reduced frequency of mandatory OSHA safety inspections due to the workplace’s proven, sustained record of excellence. “Every three years after earning a star status, OSHA comes back and reexamines businesses to make sure all requirements are still being complied with,” said Scott. “The good thing about VPP is that it gets the employees involved,” said Scott. “If every employee is involved in safety then we can get the best process going to get our numbers under the national average.”

The department received dozens of awards, accreditation and certifications for their quick response, community engagement, professionalism and department readiness. “We hope to continue improving our department through training to improve quality of knowledge and responses to situations,” said Wade. “It took a lot of hard work from every member of the department and it was because of that hard work that we won. Winning this award was a great kickoff for 2014 and we plan to continue pushing forward with more training and innovation, and who knows, maybe we will win the whole thing this year.”

One of the most difficult parts of conducting an aerial refuel is the danger that comes with flying the aircraft so close to one other, according to Searcy. “We send out hoses from the KC-130 that the Ospreys hook up to, but they still have to get pretty close to get the fuel,” he said. “Communication is important during the process. The Marines in the back of the plane are constantly communicating between me and the pilots, letting us know the Ospreys location.” “Communication is what makes for a successful aerial refuel mission,” said Searcy.

The training provided the Marines with an opportunity to actually put into practice what they have been trained in their MOS to do, according to Wuori. “This is just training to build (the HESCO Bunker),” said Wuori. “We are going to test its defenses when we conduct both a demolition and .50 caliber machine gun ranges later

in the exercise.” As the day came to a close, the Marines looked on all that they accomplished and felt great pride in the work that had been done, according to Wuori. “The company comes out here, we work, learn and strengthen, not just the unit, but ourselves and in turn, the squadron is successful and that’s what’s it all about — strengthening the Corps,” said Wuoir.

The Marines were tasked with demolition, providing hygiene and power needs, conducting route reconnaissance, and building timber framed shelters, HESCO Bunkers and tank ditches. Marines depend on each other to complete a mission, which builds camaraderie and strengthens unit cohesion, according to Corbett. Each individual Marine played a key role in supporting the mission. During the exercise, the water support technicians purified almost 2,500 gallons of water a day for the Marines to use for hygiene, cooking and hydration. “Out here we are purifying water using our light weight water purifying system,” said Lance Cpl. Quentin J. Stallings, a water support technician with MWSS-271. “We pull the water from the ocean that contains non drinkable materials and we turn it into water that’s safe for drinking so the Marines can complete what they have to do.” The water support technicians with the squadron use the Tactical Water Purification System to meet water needs. The system includes a high pressure pump, a reverse osmosis module, cartridge filtration and a raw water intake system that ensure Marines have safe, usable supply of water to support

Morehead City provided food, music and fishing for more than 500 service members and their families as part of Military Appreciation Day May 31. MAD is an event organized and executed completely by volunteers to provide a day of fishing for active duty, guard and reserve service members. The event also includes activities for families and a Southern-style cookout. More than 100 boats participated in fishing activities, including 114 volunteers and three chartered fishing vessels. “A lot of good people came together to help show their support for our military,” said John Polosky, a coordinator for the MAD. The Morehead City MAD event came with spectacular weather, tremendous fishing and record-breaking attendance, according to Polosky, who is an Army Vietnam War veteran. “I am nowhere near a great fisher, but I had a blast,” said Lance Cpl. Kurtis Anderson, a computer repair technician with Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28. “I am lucky my buddies dragged me out of bed to come out with them.” Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point’s Single Marine Program boarded the Carolina Princess, one of the three chartered fishing vessels. The vessel traveled for nearly two hours to reach its first fishing spot nearly 50 miles out at sea. The ride out gave everyone plenty of time to find their sea legs, according to Anderson. Once the boat stopped all the fishers manned the rails, loading the hooks with bait and casting into the dark blue ocean. “It seemed like the fish were jumping into the boat at how fast people were catching them,” said Anderson. The boat visited six prime fishing spots before bringing the party back to shore. “My favorite part by far was reeling one in or watching some guys try to catch the big ones that were hiding right below the surface,” he said. The crew of the ship roamed around checking the length of fish determining whether they were large enough to keep. “We had a lot of keepers,” said Lance Cpl. The crew even cleaned all the catches for the group back ashore. “It was worth getting up early,” said Dees. “There are not many other things I can think of doing on the weekend better than just kicking back with some friends in the middle of the ocean.” The day continued for the group after docking, as they joined the

festivities taking place on land and enjoying the Southern cookout that was waiting for them. “All we want to do is just give all the service members a simple thank you for what they do and sacrifice for us every day,” said Polosky.

Cherry Pointâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s safety office wants to remind air station personnel to always wear proper personal protective equipment to ensure personal safety and the safety of those around them. According to Air Station Order P5560.3D, all runners, joggers, skaters, bicyclists, and those performing physical training outdoors during periods of reduced visibility, before morning colors and after evening colors are required to wear authorized retro-reflective clothing, vests or belts. Other personal reflective gear such as wristbands, ankle bands, gloves and hats may be worn to provide additional visibility but by themselves do not provide sufficient visibility to meet the required standards for approved reflective gear.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;All personnel on the station are required to wear the glow belt during inclement weather and before and after colors so that drivers can pick up on Marines, Sailors and civilians running or working out near the road,â&#x20AC;? said Sgt. Maj. Benjamin Pangborn, air station sergeant major. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a matter of safety and providing another avenue of situational awareness for drivers.â&#x20AC;? Those looking to purchase reflective gear can find authorized reflective clothing, vests and belts at the various Marine Marts located around the station, at the main Marine Corps Exchange or online. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even I wear the glow belt,â&#x20AC;? said Pangborn. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have two situated in my office so I have to see them on my way out, to remind me when I PT to always wear my belt.â&#x20AC;? Marine Corps Order 5100.19F states that an appropriate fluorescent or retro-reflec-

tive form of PPE will be used by all Marine Corps personnel under certain conditions. Personnel exposed to vehicle traffic in their assigned duties and when within six feet of any traveled portion of a roadway, highway, parking lot, or where vehicles congregate or assemble are required to wear approved reflective gear. These personnel may include, but are not limited to marching troops, road guards, all traffic control personnel, and roadway and telephone repair personnel. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wearing reflective gear is a good practice to get into all the time when PTing,â&#x20AC;? said Pangborn. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is for the safety of everyone on the station to try and help eliminate low light and foul weather-related mishaps.â&#x20AC;? Requires experience with family assessment, crisis intervention, and comprehensive service planning. Bachelor’s Degree in a human service or related field with at least one year experience preferred. Experience providing services to meet pervasive needs of low-income families with children. Experience with Head Start and Self-Sufficiency Programs preferred. Bilingual in Spanish preferred. Must be willing to travel to work sites in Carteret, Craven, Jones and Pamlico counties.
