VMU-2 reunites with families, loved ones Windsock winds to change soon

LANCE CPL. GRACE L. WALADKEWICS MCAS CHERRY POINT

Approximately 45 Marines and Sailors with Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 2 returned to Cherry Point May 22 after a seven-month deployment to Afghanistan. “It feels great to be back in the states,” said Master Sgt. Jose Gonzalez, the detachment senior enlisted UAV operator, with VMU-2. During the deployment, the Marines used the squadron’s unmanned aerial vehicles to provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance to the Marine ground forces who were assisting the Afghan National Army and training them to take over once the Marines were gone, explained Gonzalez. “We completed our mission,” said Gonzalez. “But most importantly, we brought all of our Marines home to their families.” The returning service members were greeted by a cheering crowd of proud friends and loved ones at the squadron’s hangar. “This was my first deployment, and the months have been long,” said Staff Sgt. Daryl Ward, a UAV operator with VMU2. “Now that I’m back, I feel so relieved, excited and numb; it feels like it’s not really happening.” Ward and his wife Brittany echoed what nearly every other family was saying about their Marine returning – that they are proud of what the unit accomplished and are looking forward to spending time together as a family again. “I couldn’t put in to words how well the Marines performed,” said Gonzalez. “It is time for the Marines to return to their families. The mission was a success and all the work the Marines did was incredibly valued.”

MWSS-271 conducts company field exercise LANCE CPL. UNIQUE B. ROBERTS MCAS CHERRY POINT

More than 100 Engineers with Marine Wing Support Squadron 271 stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., traveled to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune to engage in a company field exercise May 27 through Monday. MWSS-271, also known as the “Workhorse of the Wing”, strives to provide essential ground support assets to fixed-wing components of an Aviation Combat Element and Marine Air Control Groups. The squadron is made up of four different companies including, Motor Transport, Engineers, Air Operations and Headquarters Company. The quarterly field exercise fosters an environment for Marines in the supporting companies to develop new skills and refresh skills learned during previous exercises or operations. “The purpose of this field training is to focus our training to encompass those vital tasks that are necessary to achieve proficiency in survivability and force protection,” said Master Sgt. Kent Corbett, the engineer company operations chief with MWSS-271. The exercise is also a preparation tool for an upcoming squadron field training exercise where the Marines will support not only the company to which they are assigned but the whole squadron, according to Corbett. Before going to Camp Lejeune, the Marines attended classes and engaged in practical application scenarios to prepare for the exercise. During the exercise, the Marines are scheduled to conduct a variety of training missions including demolition projects, tank ditch construction and route reconnaissance, Corbett said. Corbett expects his Marines to perform exceptionally well during their stay at Camp Lejeune and anticipates their hard work and mission accomplishment will serve to closely bond the unit. “I’m looking forward to attending the field exercise,” said Lance Cpl. Miguel A. Romero, an engineer equipment operator with the squadron. “It’s a good opportunity to learn new techniques on how to complete different projects and become proficient in our different military occupational specialties.”

Lt. Col. Charles E. Smith is scheduled to assume command of Marine Air Control Squadron 2 from Lt. Col. Jeffrey D. Hanson during a ceremony aboard the air station today. “I’m extremely proud of the MACS-2 Marines and families for their hard work and dedication to the unit and to each other during my time here,” said Hanson. Hanson joined MACS-2 Dec. 13, 2012. He is overjoyed at what the squadron has accomplished and takes great pride in turning over the squadron to the new commander. “My goals upon taking command of the squadron were to safely and successfully deploy two detachments of Marines to Afghanistan, support II Marine Expeditionary Force by performing all mission essential tasks proficiently and professionally, increase our training and readiness, maximize unit cohesion, provide care and support to the families of MACS-2 Marines,” said Hanson. “I am happy to say that the Marines of MACS-2 not only met the goals, they greatly exceeded all my expectations.” Hanson will continue his career as a

The Marine Corps, and 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, take flight leadership very seriously. In order to qualify in certain leadership positions such as mission commander, pilots must complete a program of instruction that tests and validates their abilities and knowledge. The Flight Leadership Standardization Evaluators program allows developing flight leaders to have a fresh set of eyes to observe and offer insight and instruction on technical skills, tactics and weapons employment beyond standard levels, according to Maj. Nicholas Waldron, an FLSE program coordinator for EA-6B Prowler pilots with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. “A great benefit to the program is that it also allows us as evaluators to provide insight to pilots that they might not get if the squadron were to go at it alone,” said Waldron. Each squadron maintains flight leadership coordinators

Readers of The Windsock may notice some changes in design and content in coming issues as the Joint Public Affairs Office and its civilian publishing partners redistribute responsibilities for layout and design of the newspaper. The local changes come as part of a Corps-wide reorganization of the entire public affairs field. Under the reorganization, base and station newspapers across the service are making significant changes or being discontinued entirely. Here at Cherry Point, the reallocation of responsibilities will allow JPAO to continue to provide public affairs support to local commands despite significant reductions in manning while ensuring uninterrupted publication of the newspaper. “Our internal processes will change, but we hope it will be mostly transparent to our readers,” said Mike Barton, acting director of public affairs. “But we will also use this as an opportunity to work with some real newspaper professionals to make updates and improvements to our station newspaper, which has been in production for more than 70 years. Newspapers still have a place in today’s social media and internet age, but they must continue to adapt to survive.” Public affairs Marines will continue to provide coverage of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point news and activities. However, staff members at Havelock News, one of 35 newspapers and affiliated websites belonging to Halifax Media Group, will assume primary responsibility for layout and design of The Windsock beginning with the June 5 issue. The changes will not affect the way units request or receive coverage from PA personnel. Re-

who have the ability to qualify other pilots within their squadron, according to Waldron. The difference between coordinators and evaluators are that the evaluators can qualify the coordinators as well as potential flight leaders. “It is our job as flight leadership standardization evaluators to give an extra check to ensure everything is safely and effectively conducted across (all the different types of aircraft) within the wing,” said Waldron. The program also provides the commanding general insight into the flight leadership and development throughout 2nd MAW to ensure combat readiness and operation excellence, he said. Each evaluator is a highly skilled and experienced aviator with specialized training in tactics and flight leadership, according to Barry R. Fetzer, the deputy director of 2nd MAW’s Aviation Training System. Fetzer is also the overall manager of the United States Marine Corps FLSE program.

What is ‘Liturgical’? CMDR. J. S. PLUMMER 2ND MARINE AIRCRAFT WING DEPUTY CHAPLAIN

When I tell people that I’m serving as the pastor of the 9 a.m. Liturgical Protestant Worship Service that gathers Sunday mornings at the MCAS Cherry Point Chapel most people ask me, “What’s liturgical?” I tell them it’s a word that comes from the Greek meaning “a public work.” It is particularly associated with the celebrating of Holy Communion, coming to the Lord’s table, which we do at that service on a weekly basis. I tell people it’s a traditional Holy Communion worship service with the singing of traditional hymns like “Amazing Grace,” scripture readings, preaching and coming to the Lord’s table like we may find at a Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, United Church of Christ, or Episcopal worship service. All people are welcome to attend, and everybody is welcome at the communion table, but the people who mostly come are people who enjoy good traditional worship. It’s a worship service that a lot of Marines and Sailors might enjoy, but they don’t come because they don’t know what the word “liturgical” means. It’s interesting that one simple word can generate so much confusion, and perhaps even keep Marines and Sailors away from enjoying a wonderful worship experience, and hearing God’s word read from the Bible, and hearing preaching that brings words of God’s grace and forgiveness, and even challenge, and then coming to the communion table to be strengthened in faith

to face the week ahead. But that one word and misunderstanding of it may keep people away – people who might otherwise very much enjoy the service. Such is the power of the words we use. Consider for a moment that the words we use with a friend, co-worker or loved one could break a person’s heart, or hurt a person’s feelings or insult him or her; or consider that a word of kindness or encouragement can make a person’s day. Words have great power! As I reflect upon the use of one word that seems to be greatly misunderstood, “liturgical,” I can’t help but ponder the power of words and their use, and then wonder how often we use words thoughtlessly. I wonder how often we are misunderstood, or even worse, how often we insult or hurt someone’s feelings. I’m going to use whatever little influence I have to seek to change the name of the Liturgical Protestant Worship Service so there might not be any misunderstanding of what we’re about. I would hope whatever name the service takes, it communicates that it is a loving place of Christian community where all people are welcome and gather to hear God’s word and find and share God’s grace and forgiveness, and come to the communion table on a weekly basis to be strengthened in their Christian faith and to be the best possible Marine or Sailor God has called us to be. I hope to see you at the chapel, whatever worship service you might enjoy. Take care and God bless.

PFC. DAVIDSON RODRIGUEZ Job Title: Postal Clerk Unit: Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron Age: 22 Hometown: Brooklyn, N.Y. Date Joined: Oct. 28, 2013 Sorting and distributing mail across the various units aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point is Pfc. Davidson Rodriguez’ primary focus. “I handle all mail that comes into Cherry Point, and sort the mail by unit so it is ready when the clerks come to pick it up,” said Rodriguez. According to Rodriguez, the most challenging part of his job is keeping an accurate record of every piece of mail that comes in and goes out of the post office. “I would never want to be the reason someone doesn’t get an important package or letter they have been waiting for,” said the 22-year-old, Brooklyn, N.Y., native. When he is not in the mail room, Rodriguez enjoys volunteering through church activities and served as a teacher’s aide, teaching chess and photography to children prior to enlisting in the Marine Corps. “Even though I didn’t join the Marine Corps expecting to be a postal clerk, I really love my job, and the more I learn, the more I enjoy being a postal clerk,” said Rodriguez. Rodriguez described his job as very fulfilling, because the postal clerks working efficiently and caring for each piece of mail ensures everyone gets what they are looking for when they need it most. “Understanding the mechanics, organization and attention to detail needed behind the scenes is my favorite part of my job,” said Rodriguez. “The little things, even just a single piece of mail, is really important because that may be all someone is holding on to to keep them going.” Rodriguez said he is looking forward to advancing in his career in the Marine Corps and hopes to continue learning about his job, serving in his community and helping people wherever he goes.

From Marine to Corsair pilot: Chris Avery wows crowd

When Chris Avery was only 12 years old his passion for aviation landed him in the cockpit of a plane. Taking lessons in his father’s Aeronca Chief, Avery was ready to fly from the start. “My dad was a pilot so I was around airplanes for a long time. It definitely interested me and encouraged me to pursue the same thing,” said Avery, a commemorative air force Corsair pilot from Vero Beach, Fla. “I started flying when I was 12 and have been doing it for more than 30 years.” On his 17th birthday, Avery made a bold decision to drop out of high school to pursue a career in the Marine Corps. As an infantryman and later a scout sniper, Avery saw action during Operation Desert Storm before leaving the Marine Corps at the

age of 29. Avery’s life landed him back with the Marines during the 2014 MCAS Cherry Point “Inspiration to Innovation” Air Show May 16-18. “I spent 12 years in the Marine Corps and four in the Army National Guard,” he said. “I guess I pursued my dad because he was in the Army during World War II.” Avery is now an airline pilot who occasionally performs aerobatic air shows in a F4U Corsair, an aircraft used during World War II. It was the last aircraft to use three-bladed propeller technology. According to Avery, the Corsair is the first American aircraft to exceed 400 mph and was used primarily during World War II and the Korean War. It was designed by Vought in 16 separate models, the longest production run of any piston-engined fighter in U.S. history.

“Flying the airplane gives me such an adrenaline rush,” said Avery. “The only other time I’ve had anywhere close to that kind of rush was when I was a scout sniper.” With a streak of white smoke behind him, Avery gave audience members an adrenaline rush as well. “I think it was nice having a piece of history at the air show,” said Ruth Reels, a participant at the air show. “I think a lot of people really enjoyed seeing the Corsair and it was just a great addition to have for the show.” Showcasing a piece of history on a Marine Corps installation and being in familiar territory is always a nice gift, said Avery. “Being a Marine and being on the air station with this aircraft is a double whammy for me,” he said.

Otiuridze plans to stay in the Corps and further his career to help others the way he did at the games by lateral moving into another military occupational specialty such as counter-intelligence.

When Cpl. Lasha Otiuridze enlisted in the Marine Corps in February of 2011, he never expected to be assisting his home country in the 2014 Marine Corps Trials, a paralympics event held at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. Otiuridze, a native of Tbilisi, the capital of the country Georgia, spent his childhood learning several languages including Georgian ,Russian, English and German. “(Headquarters Marine Corps) told me they needed help and the next thing I knew, I was in California translating for the Georgian team,” he said. Otiuridze, an aircraft maintenance administrative specialist at Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 2, was one of only two qualified Marines available to translate during the games.

While deployed to Japan in 2013, he was offered the chance to be recognized for his language skills and scored well on a test to qualify him as a Georgian translator. “I took the test and didn’t think much of it,” said Otiuridze. “Now the Marine Corps knows I’m able to speak my native language.” At the games, Otiuridze did everything he could to make sure his home country had zero disadvantages when it came to understanding the games. “I would wake up earlier than everyone else to learn the schedule for the game,” said Otiuridze. “I would meet the judges and coordinators and review anything and everything.” Some of the different events that Otiuridze translated during his trip included running, swimming, archery and shooting. “It was an extremely motivating experience,” said Otiuridze. “I felt tremendously proud to assist veterans, some of whom com-

“Each evaluator must have a reputation and proven abilities that precede their squadron, followed by an endorsement by their Marine aircraft group commanding officer before they can be designated as a 2nd MAW FLSE,” said Fetzer. The program has enhanced flight leadership standardization, evaluation and accountability throughout Marine Corps aviation, according to Fetzer. “The FLSE is important to the Marine Corps overall because every Marine and every aircraft is a national asset,” said Fetzer. “We must do everything we can to enhance leadership and reduce the risk to protect the investment the American people have made in their corps of Marines. The evaluators program helps that endeavor.”

COMMAND from page A1 student at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. Hanson said leaving the squadron is bittersweet but he is excited to see what the Marine Corps has in store for him. Before joining the unit, Smith served as the Marine Air Control Group 28 (Forward) commanding officer while deployed to Afghanistan in June 2013 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Smith plans to reinvigorate the squadron by reinforcing the basics and strengthening the unit’s cohesion. “My goals and aspirations are to continue to build upon the extraordinary reputation of MACS2, to function as a team to achieve personal and professional balanced excellence and to ensure all members of the command are treated with dignity and respect,” said Smith. Smith looks forward to commanding the squadron and the great times ahead with his fellow Marines. “I look forward to meeting all the men and women of MACS-2 and their families and being part of their Marine Corps career.”

on noncombatant evacuation operations aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., May 12 -14. During a NEO, an evacuation control center is established and serves to provide essential services including contraband search, medical screening, administrative processing and transportation of U.S. citizens, Department of Defense civilian personnel, and designated host nation and third country nationals to a designated safe haven. Evacuation operations are characterized by uncertainty and may be directed without warning due to sudden changes in a country’s government, reoriented diplomatic or military relationships with the United States, a sudden hostile threat to United States citizens from a force within or external to a host nation, or a devastating natural or man-made disaster. “We’re practicing and training to set up an ECC, designed to facilitate the process of taking noncombatant evacuees out of an unstable area and bringing them to a safe haven,” said 2nd Lt. James Blake, the ECC officer in charge. “Not only are we here to demonstrate the mission capability of [conducting a NEO], but we’re here to enhance the integration with the rest of the Marine Air Ground Task Force.” In order to make the training more realistic, 90 Marines and Sailors with CLB-2, dressed in civilian attire, performed the role of evacuees. This gave them a better understanding of an ECC and aided the ECC Marines in their training. The ECC team flew in on two MV-22B Ospreys to simulate deploying to evacuate an embassy. Additional realism was injected into the NEO training scenario by Marines from the Marine Corps Embassy Security Group. The Marines interacted with the ECC team and

role players to enhance training vignettes and to improve ECC techniques based on real life scenarios each of them experienced while stationed at various U.S. embassies. “We’re role playing to help these guys set up for any kind of evacuation that may have to happen for this upcoming deployment,” said Cpl. Ryan Rapp, a motor transportation mechanic with CLB-2. “[This exercise] helps give these guys a baseline to go off of and tells them what they’re going to need to do, how they’re going to need to do it and see where improvements need to be made.” Unit leaders rely upon noncommissioned officers’ experiences and abilities to adapt to the fluid nature of the missions. “Sergeants and corporals make things happen,” said Lt. Col. William Stophel, the commanding officer of CLB-2. “It’s an exciting time. You put a lot of strength in what the noncommissioned officers can do for you because that’s the source of strength for any organization. Marines are rising to the occasion, and that’s good to see.” CLB-2 will be fulfilling a unique role during its upcoming deployment. The logistics unit will not only perform their usual duties, but will also serve as the command element for SPMAGTF Africa, which is a first for the battalion.

Atlantic Beach hosts Memorial Day fireworks LANCE CPL. JOSHUA R. HEINS MCAS CHERRY POINT

Friends and families from across Eastern North Carolina came together at Atlantic Beach May 24 for bright lights and the crackling pops of a free fireworks show given in tribute to those who have given their lives in our nation’s wars. Many of Cherry Point’s own Marines attended the event, swarming the beach in groups to enjoy the night’s event. “We came out early so we could relax on the beach before the show got started,” said Lance Cpl. Travis Stafford, a station property clerk with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron. “We were ecstatic for the fireworks to start.” The show started at 9 p.m. just after sunset, the final sparkles of the sun’s rays kissing off the water on the warm Saturday evening. Fireworks are a great way to kick off the holiday weekend and remember all the veterans who sacrificed their lives while serving, according to Stafford. “It’s important that we take a moment and remember why we’re celebrating,” said Stafford. Although there were nearly a thousand people in attendance, the show fostered a family friendly atmosphere and left audience members smiling and gasping for more. “My wife and I came out to enjoy the show, and the atmosphere was great to bring out the family to as well,” said Dawson. Both the Stafford and Dawson families intend to return next year to see the fireworks again. “The show was a blast, and we can’t wait to come out to see it again next year,” said Dawson.

People of all ages from across Eastern North Carolina came together during a Memorial Day event held at the New Bern National Cemetery May 26 in remembrance of the men and women who sacrificed their lives fighting to protect America’s most prized possession – civil liberties.

The event was held in remembrance of the men and women who sacrificed their lives fighting to protect America’s most prized possession – civil liberties. “Today is a great day to reflect on why we have those freedoms,” said keynote speaker, retired Maj. Gen. Thomas Braaten. Braaten was formerly a commanding general of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point.

During the event, members of local veterans organizations came together with community members to reflect on the selflessness of service members who died in conflict protecting the nation. “Nobody gave us our freedom,” said retired Maj. Gen. Thomas Braaten, a former commanding general of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. “It was earned 237 plus years ago and has been maintained ever since by good citizens who stepped forward when their country called and fought the battles and wars necessary to maintain our freedom.”
