A

s we go to press with our bumper February issue in mid-January, a flurry of trade shows have already kicked off the year for both suppliers and retailers, with freezing temperatures not deterring gift buyers - eager to refill their shelves after the Christmas trading period - from travelling to London’s Top Drawer in the south, Harrogate Christmas & Gift in the north, and Giving & Living in the West Country. Still to come this month are Scotland’s Trade Fair Spring in Glasgow, and the January Furniture Show at the NEC. The great thing about trade shows – apart from new launches of course! – is the networking, the people you bump into in the aisles, the seminars you take time out to sit in on, and who you find yourself sitting next to when you stop for a coffee. For Ali Farrell and myself, it’s been great to meet up with so many of you in the industry this month – both new and familiar faces - and to catch up with some of the companies that have been shortlisted in this year’s Gift of the Year competition too. Turn to the GA’s Sarah Ward column on page 37 where she highlights the key trends she’s spotted across this year’s shortlist, and to Products of Change’s Rob Hutchins’ column on page 103, who spotlights which companies have caught his eye in the Ethical & Sustainable Gift category. Of course, the question on everyone’s lips these past few weeks has been ‘how was Christmas trading?’ with gift retailers up

Gift Of The Year Shortlist Announced

After a nail-biting few months, the shortlist for this year’s Gift of the Year competition, organised by The Giftware Association, has been announced, with entries seen and judged by over 100 judges comprising retailers and buyers. “The selected entries have demonstrated exceptional quality, design, and a true understanding of market trends,” comments The Giftware Association’s marketing and PR manager Chris Workman. “Being shortlisted for the Gift of the Year Awards is a remarkable accomplishment and reflects the dedication and talent of those involved in bringing these products to market.” Adds Chris: “Spanning 20 categories, the shortlisted companies showcase the diversity and innovation within our creative sector. Rain Dampened Festive Spend Disappointing consumer spending over the festive season saw sales decrease by 5%, according to figures from the British Retail Consortium (BRC). “December’s heavy rain left many shoppers reluctant to brave the elements, who instead opted to browse online before making final purchases, or shop online altogether,” stated Helen Dickinson, the BRC’s chief executive. “This led to a substantial decline in footfall levels compared to December 2022, when there was significant pent-up demand for in-store shopping post Covid restrictions.” However, she added that some cities, such as Edinburgh, bucked the trend, seeing footfall levels rise in December thanks to recent investment in new shopping destinations. Other Speakers Include ‘Dragon’ Theo Paphitis Pioneering British fashion and textile designer Dame Zandra Rhodes (known as the Princess of Punk), will take to the Inspiring Retail Stage at Spring Fair (NEC, 4-7 February) in conversation with retail analyst Natalie Berg, exploring her remarkable journey in design, leadership and innovation. The Fabric of Success: Dame Zandra Rhodes on Reinventing Fashion and Retail Leadership, will take place at 12.30pm on Wednesday 7 February in Hall 2 within Spring Fair’s fashion destination Moda. Other keynote speakers who will be taking to the Inspiring Retail Stage which also features the Moda catwalks - include retail entrepreneur and former ‘Dragon’ Theo Paphitis, Kris Hamer of the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and ESG pioneer Paul Wright. Bira’s High Street Predictions The British Independent Retailers Association (Bira) says that contrary to the digital trend, there has been a surprising shift recently, with ceo Andrew Goodacre explaining: "The penetration of internet shopping declined in 2023, and we do not expect it to increase in 2024 – most people will want to buy in shops. This insight underscores the enduring importance of brick-and-mortar stores in the retail landscape.” He adds that the older generation represents a real business opportunity for retailers, thanks to higher levels of wealth and disposable income. “Retailers need to recognise the potential of this demographic and not to ignore the often retired generation's significant purchasing power," he emphasised, adding, "other opportunities will still be local shopping and business communities working together to create a vibrant, diverse high street that people want to visit and where they want to spend time and money." Commenting on the recent BRC figures (see Rain Dampened High Street Spend below left) Andrew concurred that the footfall figures are very disappointing and confirm the challenging year it has been for so many independent retailers. “The only silver lining to this footfall cloud is the fact that high streets have done better than other locations, showing that people still prefer to visit shops on the high street. As well as needing some luck with the weather, looking into 2024 we need the government to focus on improving consumer confidence.” (See Championing The High Street on pages 80-81). Spring Fair Unveils Licensed Line-Up A host of licensed products will be showcased at Spring Fair, including Disney, Marvel, Harry Potter and Barbie. “The huge rise in popularity for licensed products in the retail sector continues unabated with Spring Fair playing host to an enormous array of bestselling designs,” enthuses event director Soraya Gadelrab. 2024 is a special year for Enesco, as the company will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. “Having purchased two small companies in the North of England and South West Scotland - Lilliput Lane and Border Fine Arts - the company was registered as Enesco European Giftware Group now known as Enesco,” says the company’s trade marketing manager Aylish Ellwood. “Together, the two companies joined forces and moved to a new headquarters in Carlisle in Cumbria that remains Enesco’s home today.” The start of the company’s journey began at the

height of the collectables era, with brands such as Cherished Teddies, Lilliput Lane and Border Fine Arts part of the Enesco portfolio, along with Beatrix Potter. “We are proud to have been a trusted licensee since 1987, still preserving the magic and charm of Beatrix Potter’s world for generations to come,” states Aylish. She adds that while times may have changed, the narrative around Enesco’s vision and values has not. “Through the art of storytelling, we aspire to bring joy and happiness to every home.” Today, the company’s portfolio has expanded to include licensed products from big name brands such as Disney, Harry Potter, The Grinch and Lolita. In addition, Enesco is the exclusive distribution of Yankee Candle, Willow Tree and Kloche. “While some things stay the same, Enesco’s story continues, and we look forward to the next chapter in our history,” says Aylish.

Enesco Announces A New Pricing Strategy Enesco has announced a strategic initiative aimed at benefiting the company’s retail partners nationwide. The company has introduced a more competitive pricing model, along with improved retail margins. With immediate effect, last year’s 2.2 mark-up will be improved to 2.4, with the exception of the company’s home fragrance brands: Yankee Candle, WoodWick, Chesapeake Bay, Eau Lovely, Irish Botanicals, Herb Dublin and Fern. In addition, for industry leading brands such as Disney, Warner Bros., Jim Shore, Beatrix Potter and Willow Tree, the company’s focus is on standardising pricing and aggressively achieving crucial retail price points. Retailers will see a large number of reductions in RRPs, along with the improved margin, with the changes offering better value to both the retailer and the end consumer.

Floss & Rock Receive King’s Award Children’s toy brand Floss & Rock was recognised with a prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise last year, a commendation for the company’s excellence in International Trade, with the LordLieutenant, the Mayor of Fylde and consort, recently attending the company’s Blackpool offices to officially present the award. “It was a huge honour to welcome the Lord-Lieutenant and her party into the office,” comments co-founder and managing director Tim Hislop. “This award reflects the huge efforts our entire team has made, especially over the past six years, to grow our sales network across the world despite the many challenges - including a global pandemic and international war. Joe Davies Gets Lippy Joe Davies has been appointed by Amber House as the exclusive distributor for the Read My Lips brand of licensed lip balms across independent retail. The full collection of Read My Lips products, featuring bestselling licensed brands such as Pepsi, Jelly Belly, Hershey’s, Reese’s, Fruit-tella and Mentos will be available from Joe Davies in February and will be launched at Spring Fair on the Joe Davies stand (Hall 4 Stand C10-D11). For some indie gift retailers, Christmas 2023 started as early as late summer, while for others, it was a race to the finish and into Twixmas to get the tills jingling. A handful of gift retailers reflect on the festive season and share what was on the up, and which products won’t be on their Christmas buying list for 2024.

A Very Busy Christmas Christmas cracker or Christmas turkey? “Christmas started as Halloween ended - if not before - and kicked off with Christmas decorations being really strong, which never slowed down,” confirmed Samantha Gibbs, owner of three Nest gift stores in Stoneygate, Stoughton Grange, and Thurlaston Garden Centre and Tearoom, “with the last week far busier than I had anticipated.” Continued Samantha: “Our ordering had been confident, so we were covered, but there was a longer surge of orders and customers than I had expected, and with Christmas falling on a Monday, it certainly kept sales coming in. If only every year Christmas could fall on a Monday! We didn't really know what to expect with Christmas Eve falling on a Sunday, but that certainly worked in our favour, as all three shops were open and all were busy. Many weren't last minute shoppers but organised people who came in for a browse and spent, so it was a win, win!” Added Samantha: “I do think some very, very wet and windy days made a huge difference to footfall though, and as frustrating as that always is, I was equally glad that it wasn’t the frost and snow we’ve seen in previous years. “Year on year, November was the weaker month, and although December finished

well, it did come down to the last week before Christmas. However, our postChristmas sale started very strongly, which brought December up nicely.” Festive favourites? “Women’s accessories, toys, games and puzzles, as well as jewellery, were our strongest categories, along with Christmas decorations.” Any lessons learned? “I have already started my Christmas 2024 buying and have decided not to buy any less than in 2023, but to specifically concentrate our attention on new lines, despite some current lines having been very successful,” explains Samantha. “I think that if we are facing yet another year of tough sales, customers will enjoy seeing something very fresh and new. “The breadth of companies we are buying from is constantly expanding so I will be looking at suppliers who have grown their ranges over the last couple of years. Hopefully it will feel like it’s a confident and large enough collection to commit to.” Added Samantha: “Re Q4, I think the best lesson I have learned over the past few years is to be conscious of which companies are able to fulfil orders and turnaround their stock quickly. With those companies that I know we can get stock from on a very regular basis - every few days - I will be extending the range we buy from them and committing more of the budget. I don’t tend to re-order from companies that can’t send their stock quickly.”

Tills Were Jingling In August Christmas cracker or Christmas turkey? “We received our first Christmas order from Shoeless Joe towards the end of August and almost as fast as we were unpacking the boxes we were selling the items,” confirmed Janet Hartree, owner of Ewe and Me and Ewe and Me Too in Grantown-on-Spey. “Therefore, for us, Christmas started at the end of August, and the joy was that it never really stopped. The first two weeks in November were a little quieter, but that gave us a chance to check stock and re-order. We then branched out with our Christmas stock and cards, selling up on last year.” Added Janet: “During the two months leading up to Christmas, the weather was pretty awful, with rain almost every day. However, that did not deter people coming out and spending. We had visitors to our town - mostly Europeans - almost all of the time, and they were very appreciative of our shop and what we had to offer. Our Christmas buying was based on the financial climate at the time, keeping an eye on prices and quantities. However that meant we had to keep reordering as stock was selling! “We had a wonderful late night shopping evening, with free gift wrapping, a free raffle and refreshments. It was our best ever, along with a special Sunday opening. People seemed to enjoy shopping more locally this Christmas and appreciated the care that they received.” Festive favourites? “Sales were across the board - scarves, jewellery, toiletries, games and children’s gifts. Only candles seemed

to be a slower sale until we received an assorted order of Christmas garlands which we dressed the window with, to include candles. Another sale! It did appear that if people liked it they bought it, much to our expectations. So all in all a good Christmas, and far better than expectations.” Any lessons learned? “l don’t think we would do anything differently. We were cautious, but starting early gave us the opportunity to restock as was needed, and caution is never a bad thing.”

Better Than Expected Christmas cracker or Christmas turkey? “Christmas was better than expected with a last minute flurry in the week leading up to Christmas Day,” reported Jon May, coowner of Mooch Gifts & Home in Bewdley and Stourport on Severn. “As we predicted, the value of money spent on individuals was down, due to the cost-of-living crisis taking a hit on people’s purses. However, the volume of people through our doors, and individual transactions, was up, with people making a concentrated effort to ‘shop local'. Our main windows supported the Greeting Card Association’s #cardmitment PROGRESSIVE

campaign, with wild animals sending cards, and graphics saying ‘This Christmas Send A Card Deliver A Smile’.” Festive favourites? “Candles from The Bewdley Candle Co, jigsaws from Gibsons and Moorland Pottery mugs, along with Village Pottery and LED mushroom lamps from Joe Davies, were our bestselling lines.” Any lessons learned?“I think we have learned not to re-stock on seasonal Christmas lines that sell out early, and to offer more seasonal homeware lines and fewer tree decorations that are sold in garden centres. A point of difference to garden centres and chains is key, especially when some of our customers are so savvy on price.”

Twixmas Was Great For Business

Christmas cracker or Christmas turkey? “Christmas at Brocante was a slow burn until the last week, but the time between the big day and New Year was very good for us, with an influx of visitors to the West Country,” confirms Kieron Cockley, co-owner of gift and lifestyle store Brocante, which has seven shops in Cornwall and one in Devon. “To encourage trade before December we

did an evening event in our Charlestown shop (that was formerly an old Chapel). We had a choir singing carols to create a festive atmosphere, and we also played some disco tunes. This is something we will do more of as it was great fun, and I think that it’s the point of difference that people want from independents at the moment.” Festive favourites? “Good sellers were candles and diffusers, in traditional Christmas scents and packaging, along with our range of Christmas mugs and jugs. Tree decorations always sell through. Strangely, we found larger items of furniture, mirrors and prints sold well after Christmas, as people wanted to treat themselves. Perhaps consumers are now making more considered purchases.” Any lessons learned? “Christmas gonks seem to have had their day, as so many are available on the high street. Additionally, we’ve noticed that the Christmas markets are now not as important in attracting people to the towns. The ones that attract the most footfall to the towns are the early ones.”

Christmas decorations, lights and cards seemed to be the norm across the high street for the whole month and was almost expected from customers. Overall, for the Christmas period, we were 1% up on last year. However, Christmas was ‘saved’ by our website, which delivered the biggest month we’ve ever had, a whopping 191% increase on 2023.” Festive favourites? “Jellycat continued to be the biggest sales driver, alongside pet gifts such as the new dog bones from History & Heraldry. We sold 500 in December alone which really helped to keep the tills ringing.” Any lessons learned? “The worst area for us was Christmas decorations, so much so that we have decided not to range any core decorations or lights in 2024. There’s no point when you have to sell them all discounted. We will be looking to replace this category with more food gifts, as we saw a significant rise in demand for unique gifts for foodies.”

Saved By Our Website Christmas cracker or Christmas turkey? “Christmas was impossibly tough for us this year,” admits Greg Rose, co-owner of Maybugs, which has gift and lifestyle stores in Bexhill on Sea, Eastbourne and Hailsham. “It didn’t seem to kick off until mid-December, and even then, sales were sluggish at best. The endless wet weather in November saw a significant decline in sales for us which we hoped we’d pull back in December. However, it felt like we had to work twice as hard to deliver the same sales as last year. Plus, discounting on core

Widdop & Co has long been renowned for its show-stopping stand at Spring Fair which, this year, is set to raise the bar yet again, along with a myriad of some 2,000 brand new products across the board – from gifting, licensed and non-licensed - and the addition of furniture in the re-launched Hestia range, to a refreshed clocks category and three new distributorships. But that’s far from all, as PG&H discovered.

aving undergone an MBO last summer, Stephen and Dan Illingworth are now at the helm of the family business that’s going into its 141st year, with Widdop & Co hitting the ground running this year. New products galore have been, and will be, showcased at a raft of trade shows that included Top Drawer, Harrogate Christmas & Gift and Giving & Living in Exeter, with Spring Fair and Ambiente still to come.

Brand new licensed gifting includes Baby Shark, Peppa Pig, Monopoly, SpongeBob, PAW Patrol, Top Gun, Batman, RAF and the show-stopping Disney collection featuring over 500 items. “We also have some amazing new distributorships from America in the form of Spongelle & Crazy Socks,” confirms Stephen, “while Christmas 24 will include over 1,500 new products, focusing on seven themes, offering a style for everyone. We have spent a lot of time curating a selection of beautiful, fun items that will give a point of difference to our customers and their Christmas offering, catering for different trends, from whimsical to traditionally regal.” The company has also been busy relaunching some of its existing brands, such as Best of Breed, with a fresh new style guide and product categories. Nature Craft is expanding into complementary gifting, the Cottage Garden range is venturing into more homeware with a new quirky selection of tableware, and Country Living is going al fresco with a new picnic PROGRESSIVE

offering. “Our leading signature homeware brand, Hestia, is moving into an incredible new collection of furniture including tables and chairs, sideboards and cabinets, along with sofas, for the first time ever in our range,” states Stephen. “Plus, in our most historically famous category of all, clocks, we are launching a brand new, trend-led, UK designed brand of premium finished clocks

Spring Fair Highlights Visitors to the Widdop & Co stand at Spring Fair will discover a ‘village’ of the company’s brands in February. “It’s as we had always planned it to be, and with strong storytelling, and over 2,000 new products to share, there certainly are a lot of stories to tell!” states Stephen. Instead of a single showstopper, (last year’s it was a Harry Potter-themed steam train!), there will be lots of small things, from life-size and real PAW Patrol and Peppa Pig characters to live artwork, live personalisation and a plush new hospitality area. “Every couple of hours we are going to have an activity going on across the various brands, licences and distributions,” explains Stephen. “There will be some exciting giveaways and talks, and we just might just have some photo opportunities with a few licence characters too. Therefore, visitors need to keep abreast of our socials to find out more!” he advises.

governance work to continue leading our field, with over 95% of our spend coming from Sedex and BSCI audited factories. All of this costs money and takes time, but we spent all of 2023 planning for this.” As for Widdop’s biggest opportunities in 2024, Stephen reels them off: “In our rapidly changing industry, there are so many opportunities for us going forward, both alone and collaborating with our licensing and distributorship partners, as well as new suppliers from over ten new countries. We are opening our brand new office and sourcing facility in Shenzhen, and we are expanding our finishing options and capability from our UK facility. Plus, our drop shipping capability is expanding to more customers and product categories having delivered over 120k pieces direct to consumers in 2023. As licensed properties expand, our bespoke sourcing and product development for national retailers is growing too, and we are broadening our reach internationally by offering unique and exclusive products in different languages.”

Gifts On Demand Expands As for gifts on demand, Widdop’s UK manufactured and finished Now or Never range of blanks – launched a year ago following a £250,000 investment, and growing exponentially - will expand further into apparel, stationery, housewares and tabletop along with unique Christmas blanks in 2024. The Now Or Never Studios facility is based at Widdop’s Manchester HQ, enabling companies to personalise their own products, thereby ensuring that they are exclusive. “We leased our first machine a year ago and now have eight,” Stephen highlights. Customers are able to select from some 2,000 different blank formats, choosing artwork from Widdop’s partnered artists as well as the company’s brands and licences. “We can provide retailers with three different artwork packs which are licensed to us,” confirms Stephen. “Alternatively, companies can supply us with their own artwork.” He says that one of the many benefits is that companies can have the products finished in the UK, cutting out the need for international product suppliers and long shipping times. “Innovation in technology has allowed us to rapidly expand this exciting new side to the business. With very low order quantities, retailers can have an exclusive item for 20-30 pieces. Ultimately, it comes down to having product that is commercially successful or not doing it at all.”

With so much fast paced ambition, it’s clearly going to be another hectic year for the company as Stephen and Dan take it forward into its 16th decade, with growth and expansion, both in the UK and internationally, the watchwords. GIFT OF THE YEAR Top Trends With the eagerly awaited Gift of The Year shortlist published at the beginning of January, Sarah Ward, ceo of The Giftware Association, looks back at this year’s competition, highlighting some of the tips she would pass on to future entrants, as well as the key trends she’s spotted going into 2024.

M

yself, Chris Workman and the team could not be any prouder of the Gift of the Year website featuring this year’s shortlisted products, with an even split of newness vs companies that have entered previously. We had a steady flow of entries this year, instead of the usual peaks and troughs, and it was evident right from the start how much effort people had put into their entries – from marketing and PR, to quality, lifestyle photography in particular, all of which counts hugely when it comes to the judging process. It was also interesting to see how many companies invested in entering more than one category, realising that their product or products would fit into multiple categories. In doing so, they have given themselves a higher profile and more retailer awareness, with examples including Cotton & Grey, Best Kept Secrets, Clarity Blend, Fox Under The Moon, AllGoodThings (a newcomer and winner last year) and Fruu. We also feel that this is, arguably, the prettiest GOTY competition, with florals, nature and light touch designs all trending, alongside themes that include wellness, mindfulness, relaxation, cosiness and sustainability, all of which can be found across the board. There are bees aplenty, as well as hanging indoor and outdoor signs and boxes that bring the outside in and vice versa. Licensed household name brands too – to include Barbie, Bagpuss, Harry Potter, “

Spiderman, Shaun the Sheep, Stitch and Spiderman – are another strong feature of this year’s competition, with branded, contemporary giftware ranging from books to LED lights. On the games front - a category we introduced for the first time last year - we definitely spotted an increasing trend for family and educational games that tie-in with consumer demand, while our new Health, Wellbeing & Accessible Gifts category has also championed inclusivity and diversity - reflecting societal change with Dotty About Braille’s A6 Christmas cards for the blind and visually impaired among the products that made it to the shortlist. Sustainability too, was evident across all categories, not only in the products submitted for Ethical & Sustainable Gifts, but in every category. A good example is Art on Scarves, whose recycled bottle scarves made it into the Contemporary Gift category. Food & Drink saw a plethora of new names, to include Drivers Pickles and Cajunel, while Design & Craft produced the largest shortlist the GOTY competition has ever seen, with several companies receiving the same number of votes. In the Pets category, companies such as Big Potato Games and Gift Republic have taken activities for humans, such as bowling and scratch cards, and translated them into another concept, making them relevant as pet gifts. Interestingly, with over 800 entries this year, nothing we received was oversized. Products had clearly been created not only to make it easy for retailers to display for maximum visual effect, but also to ensure that they are easily transportable by consumers, with packaging, always a key driver, attractive and good quality. I’m often asked if I have a favourite product, something I’m rooting for. Well, this year, I’d like to highlight Worrywarts by Cured, which are tactile concrete worry monsters, hand crafted by artist Zoe Scott and made in Scotland. They are an innovative way of tapping into the trend for mental health issues, and it’s been great to see them make the shortlist in the Design & Craft category. Finally, I’d like to urge everyone not to look at the shortlisted Gift of the Year products in isolation. Take time out to have a good look at all the selected products this year, as well as the links, to pick up on the trends and much else besides. As you’ll discover, there’s a message for us all. Springing into As visitors get ready to head off to Spring Fair (NEC, February 4-7), exhibitors tell PG&H how they are approaching the show this year, as well as highlighting their showstoppers. They also share some practical tips for visitors. Celebrating 30 Years Approach: “This year’s Spring Fair will see Enesco celebrating 30 years, so we will be telling our story as we look back, highlighting previous milestones and success stories of collections from the past,” confirms the company’s trade marketing manager Aylish Ellwood. Showstoppers: “The newly designed stand is bigger than in 2023, creating a buying experience for retailers. Born from a shared passion for the natural world, the collaboration between the Natural History Museum and Dunelm is a commercial and creative success story. Having exceeded expectations in terms of sales, it has expanded the reach of both brands while raising awareness of key issues facing the natural world – and bagged a B&LLA award into the bargain.

licensed partnership between the renowned Natural History Museum (NHM) and leading homeware retailer Dunelm was first mooted during lockdown by the Museum’s licensing agency IPR. “We recognised early on that both brands shared a synergy,” recalls the Museum’s head of licensing Maxine Lister, “particularly when it came to our approach to sustainability. We

were impressed with how much Dunelm was already doing in this area and were keen to join them on this journey.” The Museum had already experienced early success in the homewares category with its collaboration with Farrow & Ball, as well as its luxury wallpaper collection with Divine Savages. “We knew that there was an appetite for the brand in this area, but we hadn’t yet fully explored the category,”

explains Maxine. “We realised that working with Dunelm would allow us to introduce the brand and our message about the work we do to the mass market while simultaneously exploring other product areas beyond just paint and wallpaper.” Dunelm’s head of design and product development, Emma Anthony, recalls how the partnership “clicked into place for a number of reasons,” in addition to both brands’ shared sustainability goals. “Obviously, we recognised the wealth of inspiration within the Museum – it’s home to 80 million specimens – but also, the team are just such fun people to work with,” she says. Early on, it was decided that the first NHM x Dunelm collections would focus on different habitats and the biodiversity within them. The Wetlands Collection, featuring a bestselling kingfisher print, launched in 2022 alongside a ‘Signature’ range inspired by the Victorian décor of the Museum itself, and a dinosaur-themed children’s collection. Subsequent collections, released each season, have shone a spotlight on woodlands, shorelines and moorlands. Huge care is taken to ensure the designs are as authentic as possible, with Dunelm’s

LICENSING: NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM X DUNELM designers working closely with experts at the Museum. “One designer spent a day with the Museum’s mollusc curator, illustrating shells, which went on to inspire stunning products from the shoreline collection,” says Emma, “while one of the Museum palaeontologists helped in the development of both the Stegosaurus and Diplodocus plush toys.” Emma points out that the handles used on the cabinets of its Signature furniture are exact replicas of the ones found at the Museum. “It’s a lovely touch, because if you buy into that range of furniture, you're really getting a piece of the Museum to keep in your own home.” The 300+ NHM products currently available to customers range from cushions embroidered with delicate marsh botanicals and Mini Beasts wallpaper to quirky pieces like a gold-coloured octopus glasses holder. “We have a whole vein of product that runs through our collection that we affectionately call ‘Products with Personality’,” says Dunelm design director Debbie Drake. “We know our customers have a sense of humour, and anything with a sense of fun works for us. “The collaboration has definitely over-achieved the sales forecasts that we put in place. We also know that it’s raised our credibility with a new group of customers who maybe wouldn't have considered Dunelm previously, and we’re seeing an uptick in people buying coordinated products across the range. Our data shows that customers buying into the Natural History Museum collection are some of our most loyal and frequent customers.” For the Museum, the collaboration has provided an opportunity to explore new categories such as home fragrance. “We have developed a series of beautiful ranges with Dunelm that take inspiration from exquisite botanical artwork from our archives, which Dunelm have then matched in scent to create home diffusers, candles and room sprays,” explains Maxine. Additionally, it has also brought environmental issues to the attention of a wide consumer base, aligning with the Museum’s mission to create advocates for the planet. Maxine adds: “Dunelm takes great care to ensure that it engages with all regions across the country.

“We have actively engaged with its regional Facebook groups in diverse ways, including running competitions. The SS24 NHM X Dunelm collection is “the boldest collection yet”, says Maxine. “We’ve turned our attention to the Museum itself and the treasures that are housed there and the secrets about our planet that they reveal. We’ve given artworks by historic naturalists a modern twist to create maximalist prints that will appeal to nature lovers looking to make a statement. B&LLA Success The NHM x Dunelm collaboration took home the Sustainability Brand Licensed Product or Range Award at the 2023 B&LLAs. “One of the key synergies between both brands has been our commitment to more sustainable practices, from supply chains right through to the end of a product’s lifecycle,” says Maxine. “We are working together to continue to make even more improvements as the partnership grows. Some examples include the use of responsibly sourced cotton and/or recycled polyester for all bedding and curtains, only using FSC certified wood and paper, using traceable sourced mango wood for furniture, and minimising all packaging and providing second-life options wherever possible. We also use recycled materials where possible across categories - for example, our luxury notebooks are made from recycled leather.”

PG&H puts a focus on five businesses that have good reasons to celebrate as they’ve all recently reached, or are about to reach, an allimportant milestone in 2024.

Wild Things Gifts: Celebrating 40 Years “All good stories begin before the beginning, and the Wild things Gifts story is no exception, with its beginnings in the creative fermament that was Berkeley California in the 1970s, home to shops which would one day become global brands: North Face, Body Shop, Peets Coffee, where the joke had it that under every bush was an artist or a musician,” recalls Jules Vahrman, founder of Wild Things. “A stall on Telegraph Avenue in the daily craft market, under the sunshine and the trees. A way of making an easy living, making and selling holographic jewellery while ‘deciding what to do next.’ In the immortal words of John Lennon ‘Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.’” By May 1979 I was divorced, at a loose end, with no money. I headed to the UK to recuperate, settling in the East End of London at the height of the punk scene. I started making ‘shiny badges’ on the kitchen table, with a friend selling them in clubs from his coat lining then – magic! John Lewis bought 1000 heart pins and A.H. Prismatic was born – a nice corporate sounding name for what, in fact, stood for ‘Ageing Hippy’! As winter drew in, and homesick for California, I returned on a handshake deal, pottering along. But in 1983 I made a permanent return to the UK after Vicky (now my wife) arrived on the scene. A.H. Prismatic was thriving – and in July 1984 I formed Wild Things to supply them with

holographic laser earrings. The ups were selling zillions of laser earrings, as well as supplying a ‘designer’ brooch and cufflink range to Liberty’s British craft department. The downs meanwhile, were A.H. Prismatic going under and Liberty’s British craft department closing. Plus, the decorative holographic industry closed down after being taken over by the security industry so there were no suppliers to make ‘laser earrings’. In addition, with interest rates at 15%, I had to sell the house, subsequently moving down to Devon in 1998 to start all over again. But out of the ashes came crystals, and designs which combined and mutated to become the incredibly successful Crystal Fantasies range, which has since been copied worldwide. And so to 2024 and 40 years on! We have a great team of 30 skilled homeworkers, many of whom have been with us for years. Wild Things Gifts is a service business with great suppliers and customers and a big US distributor.

The emphasis is on quality and design, and continuous improvement – kaizen. We focus on making the best product we can, to the extent of making a huge investment with our wellknown crystal supplier (who had closed its lighting department) to make some shapes exclusively for us in order to sustain the high quality that sets us apart from the copyists. The 40th anniversary, along with our flagship display booths and our new floor spinners, is an opportunity to take stock and build on our foundation, taking the business to the next level. Spring Fair will therefore be a great opportunity to meet with customers, many of whom we regard as friends, and show off what will be our biggest new product launch in years, which includes a limited edition Ruby version of our ever-popular Heart Of Hearts to mark the occasion. In 2024, we also want to realise some of those other products which have been gestating over the years. We started last summer with our Pretty Little Birds range – started three years ago which has proved a massive success, with some of our new products in gestation for 10 years or more! We are also developing a new website and will be releasing new products throughout the year.”

Enesco: Celebrating 30 Years Enesco will celebrating the company’s 30th anniversary in 2024 at Ambiente, Spring Fair and other trade shows. “The biggest change, among many changes, is the product we offer,” says Enesco’s sales director Greg Waters. “Thirty years ago, our offering was led by Lilliput Lane and Border Fine Arts with many thousands of dedicated collectors. Over the last three decades however, we have seen our customers and consumers move away from this more traditional product and fall in love with products such as Willow Tree and the Disney ranges introduced in this period. While the collector market is still out

there, they would nowadays call themselves ‘fans’ or ‘followers’ rather than collectors, but it is still true that consumers fall in love with ranges or artists and love to show their support by ‘collecting’ the products.”

Caroline Gardner: Celebrating 30 Years “If you wind the clock back 30 years to the dog days of 1993 and when Caroline Gardner first started trading, an Apple was still just a fruit, and a Mac was something you wore when it rained,” reminiscences Caroline Gardner, founder of her eponymous company. “In those days our accounts were managed in a big book with black and red writing, our designs were drawn by hand, and I worked into the night.” She continues: “We remain a small family-run independent business, but the company has evolved, grown and matured into what it is today by embracing change - which is just as well, as 30 years is quite a long time to stay the same! While it is always fun to look back at what has gone, to still be relevant in a much evolved industry speaks of a business that looks firmly forward – but most of all it speaks of a great deal of effort. It speaks of the consistent hard work from the fantastic CG team, of the unending effort from the staff at our warehouse and suppliers and, of course, the loyalty and commitment of our fabulous customers and sales agents here in the UK and around the world. In so many cases these relationships have continued unabated, with plenty of fabulous new ones being added along the way.”

The Olive Branch, Billericay: Celebrating 25 Years “The difference between when I started out and now is the way in which products have evolved. For example, we used to sell traditional teddy bears for adults, but the only plush we sell now is for babies,” points out Tracy Holden (who retired on 1 December. The store has been taken over by her daughter Libby Holden). “Today, there’s far more choice, and people are conscious of the environment and packaging. However, you can’t re-invent the wheel, so we have continued to sell the same kind of products. Candles, for example, will go on for eternity! With people continuing to take a vested interest in their homes we also expanded into home interiors and home accessories. A core line is heartfelt, sentiment gifts, with greeting cards very much a growth sector.”

Carrie Elspeth Jewellery: Celebrating 25 Years “It’s been a long time since 1999 when I first started selling jewellery, greeting cards and wrapping paper from a single room studio in rural South Wales,” recalls Carrie Shapiro, founder and creative director of Carrie Elspeth. “It makes me proud that I have been in business longer than Facebook, and have designs predating the iPhone and the euro! I’ve still got retailers selling my jewellery today that I got on my first ever sales trip such as Lizzies in Bridgend.” She continues, “There’s well over 2,000 accounts on my books now from all around the world, stretching as far away as Pennsylvania, the Falkland Islands and Australia. I’ve sold to some prestigious accounts over the years too, such as Barney’s in New York and the V&A museum. “Back on my first sales trip I was selling greeting cards, wrapping paper and jewellery. My first necklace design, a blue glass cube beaded necklace had a trade price of £3.85 with a retail price of £7.99. I’ve now designed over 1,800 jewellery ranges in the last 25 years, usually made with glass, but I have used all manner of materials in the beads from coconut shells to pearls, leather and even feathers. To this day, people still like my more classic designs which tend to be colourful glass beaded bracelets and necklaces. I source beads from all over the world but have become known for my Czech glass from Bohemia. There’s a chance my 2000th design will come sometime this year too. It’s going to be something special and for sure it will be colourful, beaded and made here in Wales!” Some of Carrie’s major milestones have been receiving an invitation to meet the late Queen as part of a celebration of British Design. “This was way back in 2004 and the day before, I won the World Young Business Achiever of 2004 which was hosted in Sophia, Bulgaria. This award was presented by the then prime minister Simeon Borisov Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, who as a child was the last King of Bulgaria. I’d met two monarchs in a few days!” Adds Carrie: “My first GOTY was in 2000 and presented by Jonny Vaughan, and my most recent was in 2021 with my Stay-Safe-Stay-Strong range of sentiment bracelets. Plus, I was luckily enough to win a local award this year for most creative business in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales.” Adds Carrie: “I’m so grateful to all the retailers who have supported me over the past quarter century. I still get excited when I see people wearing my jewellery on TV. You’ll often see my designs on a certain well known BBC weather presenter who is quite a collector! However, my biggest buzz is seeing people wearing my designs in the high street or in the windows of my retailers!”

With Christmas done and dusted, it’s time to look forward to Spring Fair and Valentine’s Day, says Libby Holden, owner of Lovely Libby’s in Rayleigh, who has recently taken over The Olive Branch in Billericay following her mum’s retirement after 25 years at the helm.

Comparing our takings on the days the windows were empty, compared to the completion of the first window, just proves the impact it has on sales for us. With the first window having the theme of New Year’s glitz and glam, the second will be dedicated to the next big event in the retail calendar – Valentine’s Day. While it’s not a landmark celebration for us like Mother’s Day, it is something that we have started to invest in more and more each year. We tend to buy into more ‘add on’ gifts for Valentine’s that aren’t specifically branded to the event and can be carried on into every day stock should they not sell. This includes trinkets with more versatile phrases such as ‘love you to the moon and back’, and things adorned with hearts. We are super excited to receive our Valentine’s Day order from My Doris. Their hand-beaded cosmetic bags and pouches were some of our best-selling lines for Christmas, and they’ve released a gorgeous range that is going to be the focus of our Valentine’s window this year which features beaded hearts, lips and cherries. Meanwhile, Spring Fair is going to be an even bigger show for us this year, as Georgia and I have also recently taken on my mum Tracy’s shop, The Olive Branch in Billericay, Essex, after she took the decision to retire after celebrating 25 years on 1 December. Therefore, this will be the first year we will be collectively buying for both shops. As our first big show of the year, we are already eager to get there and get started on buying for the year ahead. 2024, here we come!”

LOOKING FORWARD

nd just like that, the fairy lights are down, fake snow is hoovered away, and the shop is ready and refreshed for the new year. Looking back, that final week before Christmas seems like an absolute whirlwind. As we predicted last month, there definitely seemed to be a final panic as people had the sudden realisation of just how close the big day was! It was interesting to see that the pattern of panic buying wasn’t overly affected by the current cost-of- living crisis. Our male customers in particular, (the main suspects for panic buying!) were still very much in the mindset of blindly shopping without much consideration of the price tag. Plus, the way the festive period fell in 2023 certainly helped our sales. Having a weekend directly before Christmas had the effect of bringing more customers out. We found a lot of customers were coming to pick up last minute extras, even though they had ‘finished’ their Christmas shopping. It’s as if that free period of time that lots of people had before the festivities commenced, almost provided customers with an additional gap in time that they felt the need to fill, in turn benefitting independents such as ourselves with purchases that the working week may have prohibited. I think everyone can agree that there is always a bit of dread going back to work during the Twixmas period, and we were certainly no different. The task of dismantling all the Christmas windows, packing away stock for next year, documenting what sold and what did not, and sorting the sale is a huge and daunting task, but so satisfying when it's done! We always do a half-price sale on any Christmas cards and decorations that we do not want to carry over to next Christmas, as well us doing our famous ‘flash sales’, where we heavily discount certain older lines exclusively for our followers on social media. Not only does this benefit us in keeping our stock refreshed Christmas after Christmas, the hype around the shop it creates on social media allows us to stay at the forefront of customers minds in a month that can be deadly for retail! Having a double-fronted shop, we’ve already started to redo our huge windows for the new year, as filling them

hristmas 2023 may have come and gone, but for Lesser & Pavey so far this year, the push is on for Christmas 2024, with many buyers already eager to place their Christmas orders for delivery in August/September. “With the exception of around a dozen of our evergreen best sellers, all of the 600 or so Christmas items are brand new,” confirms Julian. “This is something our customers have come to expect of us, as we strive to give them better designs and even more exciting new products year on year.” All of the company’s Christmas products will be on show at February’s Spring Fair PROGRESSIVE

(Hall 5; stand number 5D10-E11 and 5D20E21) along with many brand new everyday products for immediate delivery. “Reactions so far to our new Macneil Studio, Jennifer Rose and Bug Art Kooks Christmas products have been fantastic,” confirms Jonny. “In addition to the best sellers, we are introducing a number of totally new and original items. Without spoiling the surprise, suffice it to say we have new novelty products that will delight chocolate lovers!”

FACE TO FACE: LESSER & PAVEY Adds Julian: “Our 2023 sales on our Christmas Cozy & Comfy range of socks, gloves, hats and scarves was better than ever, and we sold out earlier than anticipated due to the increased demand. Our range for Christmas 2024 is therefore bigger and more diverse than ever.” Reflecting on Christmas 2023, Julian confirmed it was another solid year, with all Christmas stock selling out and feedback from customers confirming it was a good festive season. “Customers are telling us they sold out of Lesser & Pavey products, and overall, their customers were spending more than expected, given the ongoing cost of living concerns, so it’s been very encouraging feedback.” Aside from Christmas, the company is launching over 1,500 new everyday products for spring/summer 2024. “As our business with garden centres and similar outlets continues to increase, we have launched more products to meet this demand,” explains Jonny. “Our Green Fingers collection, designed in-house by our art department, is a great example of this. As the name suggests, it covers everything any keen gardener could possibility need, from a stylish mug to a To Do List, and a Bits & Bobs toolbox.” As for home fragrance, this is a sector that is continuing to grow for the company, not only with new products, but also with fresh, bespoke fragrances and innovative gift packaging. Lesser & Pavey attributes the success and rapid growth of the Desire range to the fact that candles and diffusers in nice gift packaging, at affordable prices, are an easy, popular purchase for any occasion. As Julian says: “Who doesn’t love a beautifully scented soy candle or diffuser?” New additions include more 500ml and 1 litre reed diffusers which are proving to be very popular since their initial launch last autumn. Explains Jonny: “For all sizes of diffusers we have added a tester to the side of the gift box which allows you to smell the fragrance without having to unpack and open the bottle – very simple and effective.” Meanwhile, the company is further increasing its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. As well as eliminating the use of plastics wherever possible, Lesser & Pavey is introducing products made out of 100% recycled materials. “We have two notable new collections - our Cute ‘n’ Soft RPET Pals – a collection of

supersoft plush toys - and RPET travel mugs which we are introducing to replace the hugely popular bamboo-based travel mugs,” explains Jonny. As for the challenges in 2024, Julian comments: “Since 2020 and the spread of Covid, we have undoubtedly faced more new and very different challenges than ever before, and I’m sure 2024 will be no different. Having coped with so much recently, we are confident we will do so with whatever the future holds.” Nevertheless, Julian and Jonny confirm they are feeling optimistic about 2024. recently strengthened its senior management team with the appointment of a new director, Matt Slade, who has been with the company for six years. Lesser & Pavey has also expanded its sales force adding Paul Knight and Harry Lovegrove to the sales team. With all this in mind, Julian concludes: “We are launching more new products at Spring Fair than ever, and firmly believe there is more diversity and originality than before. We therefore very much look forward to welcoming customers to our stand which is right at the front of Hall 5.”

A

s the home fragrancing sector continues to evolve in line with consumer demand, suppliers are becoming increasingly innovative across fragrance, formats, colours and vessels. A Best Kept Secrets, a highlight of the company’s Spring/Summer 2024 collections is the introduction of a brand new vessel design, housed in decorative glass with an ombre effect, designed as a statement piece for the home. “The vessels offer a touch of luxury but without the premium price tag,” points out managing director Vanessa Curry. Additionally, having always been passionate about colour, the company is taking a new direction in 2024, focusing on a more muted and sophisticated palette and embracing the latest trends that favour pastel tones, with Vanessa explaining: “We want to bring an element of subtle elegance to homes and create a tranquil ambience.” Plus, four new fragrances will be unveiled at Spring Fair, with Vanessa explaining: “the new fragrances will not only work seasonally, but also ensure that there is something new for our customers.”

Candlelight too, will be offering retailers a range of fragrances, vessels, and colours that align with emerging trends. “Our Brights collection is a fusion of two-tone themed fragrances featuring fruity scents and vibrant hues that creates an immersive experience,” highlights marketing manager Kate Winch, “while New Destinations takes its inspiration from locations around the globe, blending

diverse scents that transport users to far-off places. Each fragrance is named after its thematic origin, providing a sensory journey for users.” She adds that in response to the growing demand for sophisticated aesthetics, the company’s Frosted Hues collection introduces pastel-coloured fragrances encased in frosted glass vessels, featuring four distinct scents. “Additionally, recognising the importance of holistic wellbeing, our Wellness collection combines coloured glass vessels with invigorating fruity scents Revitalize, Harmony, Serenity, and Tranquil integrating aromatherapy into consumers' daily lives and promoting a sense of balance

Looking into the broader home fragrancing sector for 2024, we anticipate a continued emphasis on experiential and wellness-oriented products, with consumers seeking both aesthetic appeal and therapeutic benefits.” At Henry & Co, the company has four new fragrances joining its Everyday range for Spring/Summer 2024 - Spring Flowers, Fresh Daisies, Pear & White Freesia and Earl Grey & Bergamot, with the new additions available across all formats. “Florals are always popular for Spring when the weather changes and consumers want to lift the fragrances around the home,” says managing director Mark Rees. “We are also officially launching our new Artisan wax melt bar, a solid bar of wax offering the consumer an opportunity to break off wax melt size pieces to use in our wax melt burners. It’s available in all fragrances in the Artisan range in a great packaging concept, making it easy to display with an attractive price point too.” As Freckleface’s Inset: Floral Bouquet is managing director Tara a new addition to Freckleface’s RHS Carlile Swift explains: Heritage range. “Fragrance is linked to forming core memories. My parents were keen gardeners and I spent a lot of time in

the garden with them, so for our RHS heritage range we created a scent that is reminiscent of an English country garden in bloom in the Spring. Named Floral Bouquet, it is a fresh floral scent that is uplifted with notes of citrus and vanilla.” All products in the range are packaged in designs inspired by artwork from the RHS Lindley Collection, with the Floral Bouquet packaging bringing to life dusky pink flowers and earthy leaves. “We have more new products due to launch in 2024 for the RHS, which build on our existing heritage range,” Tara confirms. than just a pleasant scent.” He continues: “This spring and summer we will be looking to uplift and energise, offering fragrant, uplifting notes of juniper berry, yuzu fruit and sweet orange merged with therapeutic kaffir lime, amyris and lemon to brighten the mood after a dreary winter, while lemon verbena, amber and sandalwood help to uplift and restore.” David adds that the company has also seen a move towards a simplification in consumer demand for vessels and colour, as well as a stronger focus on the healing and therapeutic power of natural fragrance. “Our Wellness range for example, has moved from a new launch 18 months ago to the dominant products across the board. The core product has not slipped at all, but the aromatherapy range has comfortably overtaken them.”

At Aromatize, marketing and customer care manager, Sophie Aldred, says that the company’s most popular range is a 3-in-1 tealight wax melter, which features a silhouette pattern, and can also be used as a jar hugger and tealight holder.” She adds that reed diffusers continue to be strong sellers too, with the consumer conscientiously selecting refillable bottles. “This means less waste, plus users can enjoy a more opulent design. Our new marble collection, which has a naturally toned colour palette, has a wide appeal.” Enesco’s trade marketing manager, Aylish Ellwood, says that for Spring/Summer 24, emerging fragrance trends have inspired the introduction of new seasonal scents, based on key trending ingredients such as mineral woods and vibrant fruits, combining fragrances such as salty sea spray and cedar with clementine and apricot, fresh peach with honeycomb, and warm vanilla and soft floral notes. “As colour becomes more personal than ever, we expect colours with depth to be trending this season to include strong apricots, blues and browns. Neutrals will never go out of style but they will be warming up with stronger tones.” She also highlights that a big trend going into 2024 is the need to reuse and repurpose vessels. “Many candle vessels live on as storage jars, plant pots, and even tumblers if they are food safe,” Aylish points out. With Spring in mind, Lesser & Pavey meanwhile, is launching a new range of diffusers as part of the company’s Desire range, featuring pastel coloured containers, bamboo reeds and matching floral features. Championing The High Street The British Independent Retailers Association (BIRA) was set up in 1903 to represent small and independent retail businesses. Today, it has over 6,000 members across the UK, to include many gift shops. At the helm is ceo Andrew Goodacre, who talked to PG&H about the Association’s passion for seeing independent retailers – and high streets – not only survive but thrive in 2024 and beyond.

hen I joined BIRA in 2018 I was told that retail would never be boring, and that has very much proved to be the case,” states BIRA’s ceo Andrew Goodacre. “There was Covid-19 to contend with, followed by the current - even more damaging – cost-of-living crisis, and throughout this time BIRA has campaigned for the reform of business rates to reduce the burden on indie shop owners. In fact, it was

because of our campaigning that we saw the retail discount introduced in 2019. This was used to good effect during Covid - free rates in 2020 - currently offering a 75% discount, confirmed once again by the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement. As an Association, we are constantly in discussion with the Treasury to make this discount a permanent feature of the rates system, instead of something we wait anxiously for every year.” Andrew says the other big issue has been, and continues to be, shop theft. “We support an allparty parliamentary group (APPG) and, in November, we held an excellent event between retailers, MPs and senior police to better understand the problem. Retail crime should be called ‘retail harm’, as it damages retail and the communities that rely on small retailers. It is also about keeping the streets safe and attractive, streets that people want to use.” PROGRESSIVE

He points out that in addition, no year seems to be short of new regulatory burdens, with BIRA regularly engaged in discussing new plans with the relevant government departments. “Our main aim is to ensure that there is minimal disruption and cost to smaller retailers. In the past few months for example, we have had to address the sale of knives, the ban on single use plastics and anti-terrorism measures in the form of ‘Martyn’s Law’. We are not against good regulations, but they must always be proportionate,” he emphasises. His overview of retail, and particularly the world of independents, is that it is a very varied one. (BIRA’S members range from single independent retail outlets and small multiples to large department stores). “Consequently, I have become an expert on many issues,” he confirms. “To return to business rates, they are a consistent topic for lobbying. Since day one, members have told me that this is their number one bugbear. Everyone involved with retail knows that this an unfair tax burden on retailers with physical premises. In addition, the issue of retail theft has really come to the fore with all retailers in all sectors suffering from retail crime – theft, abuse of employees etc. This is a national issue of course, but we also lobby locally on issues such as car parking and accessibility. It seems that local authorities are intent on making it harder for people of all ages to use the town’s facilities, and then wonder why shops close down! “With so much happening, it is therefore crucial for us to show we have ‘an ear to the ground’ and to respond quickly to the concerns as they arise. The many forms of

FACE TO FACE: ANDREW GOODACRE, BIRA media today expect quick responses and availability, and it is why we have raised our media profile.” As for the many, and regular, surveys that the Association carries out, Andrew is passionate about looking after its 6,000 members. “I truly care about them. We must never forget that, because members pay a subscription fee, we are able to do the work that we do. It is crucial that they tell us what is happening to them locally, and the impact of national issues. It’s the reason we do surveys on a regular basis in order to capture this information.

Member Support As well as representing the independent retail sector, BIRA also provides important business services to its members to include insurance, a free legal helpline and, uniquely for an Association, a buying group. “Whether it is providing essential business support or lobbying for a better deal for indie retailers, we only have one objective – to make independents successful,” underlines Andrew.

“We also have several member directors who provide fantastic feedback into their respective retail sectors. The results of the surveys have been really useful in providing hard evidence to the policy makers. “For example, over the past 12 months we have been able to highlight the poor behaviour of energy suppliers, the impact of supply chain inflation and the impact of higher wages - and these are just a few of the areas of concern.” As BIRA engages with so many government departments and is also a member of the Retail Sector Council, (RSC), and the Welsh Retail Forum, (WRF), while also chairing the Independent Retailers Confederation, (IRC), this feedback is naturally invaluable. ith the dark winter months almost behind us, it comes as no surprise that jewellery companies are looking forward to a bright new season, with Joma Jewellery’s latest collection not only sentimental, but bursting with colour. Gifting remains the company’s focal point, with the arrival of new concept sterling silver 925 bracelets and necklaces. “Our A Little brand has also leant into self-gifting with this new collection, putting its own spin on viral jewellery trends, including gold-plated designs, friendship bracelets and micro charm jewellery, with fashion forward Happy Little Moments, Boho eBads, and Mini Charms,” explains founder and creative director Katie Loxton. The coming season also sees further delicate pieces joining Joma’s Stacks Of Style family, including brand new rings, as well an entirely new collection, Solaria, which pairs textured chains with organic pearl charms to create modern, asymmetric designs. Plus, under the Katie Loxton brand, there is also the addition of waterproof jewellery this season. “Spring/Summer 2024 literally shimmers and shines with the stand-out accent of all shades of gold,” states Hot Tomato’s director Alex Machin. “Natural elements will be at the fore, cosied up with heavenly metallic vibes, so retailers should keep an eye out for the warming glow of natural stone paired with soft, warm gold, as well as cork accessories, embellished with foil printing. Also trending are simplified flower motifs which take centre stage as the go to shape of the season,” adds Alex. “Gold, as opposed to rose gold, is definitely coming back strongly for 2024,” concurs Lila

Colour is one of the biggest trends coming through for jewellery this Spring/Summer, with gold too, back in the spotlight and lots of pearls. PG&H asked a selection of leading suppliers to tell us more about their new launches for the coming season. Jewellery’s Frank Ross, with the company responding to the trend with the launch of a new collection of Birthstone Bees. “We also have new designs in our Poppy collection that will be launching at Spring Fair – so far, we have donated just shy of £300,000 to military charities – along with new ideas and collections showcasing for the first time, to include our new acrylic display racks.” CME’s new ranges include sparkling moissanite, along with necklaces and bracelets featuring semi-precious stones, ranging from amethyst and blue agate to quartz. “They make eye catching collections and pick up on the trend for colour in jewellery,” says the company’s general manager Debbie Hunt. At Life Charms, graphic designer Agata Werycha highlights that Angel Numbers will be the company’s first new collection of 2024. “These popular numbers are believed to carry messages from the spiritual universe,” explains Agata. “We have also introduced more pastel colours in our packaging, making the designs ideal for Spring season.” Also new from Life Charms is Especially For You. “It features a range of bracelets and necklaces suitable for all giftgiving occasions,” Agata highlights. For Coral & Mint’s director Kate Banks, the focus for Spring is on the company’s new Stories collection, a customisable range that allows consumers to create their own jewellery in store. “They’re pieces of jewellery that hold memories, tell a story and ignite nostalgia,” she explains. “It allows the wearer to build pieces significant to their own story or that of a loved one, with retailers able to select the charms and chains they’d like to

CHAMPIONING POSITIVE CHANGE

T

here’s something rather special about Spring Fair that, without getting altogether too hippy on you, all aligns wonderfully with the planetary rhythms of nature’s cycle. I like to think of this season as ‘pregnant with potential’ for what Spring will eventually deliver. Which is why Spring Fair is more than just a trade show. And it’s why the Gift of the Year Awards’ Ethical and Sustainable Gifts category is, today, more than just a competition. It has, in a short space of time, become a breeding ground of innovation reflective of the cultural zeitgeist we find ourselves within. We are at a time when listening to, responding to, and looking after the planet better has become more important to us than ever. As such, we have seen a steady increase in the type of products to encourage regenerative and less consumptive, more thoughtful behaviours. And what better time to acknowledge such behaviour than in the prelude to spring, when the world comes back to colourful life? What this means, of course, is that the entry list for this year’s Ethical and Sustainable Products category has become a bubbling cauldron of exciting concoctions representative of an industry developing a real flavour for positive change. We’re talking new blueprints for zero waste; slow fashion; gifts to encourage biodiversity and an affinity with nature (Wildlife World’s Fair Trade Artisan Bird Nesters handmade from recycled saris and natural seagrass); DIY Bee Hotel Kits produced using sustainably sourced panguaneta poplar wood by Beevive, and Willsow’s first leap into licensing with its Shaun the Sheep plantable children’s book, produced in partnership with Aardman. It feels like a category that this year has really captured the heart of ‘gift-giving’. “The Gift of the Year competition, much like the home and gift industry, is evolving to reflect the shifting values and priorities of consumers,” says Chris Workman, marketing and PR manager of The Gift Association. “In the modern world, consumers are more conscious than ever about the environmental and ethical impact of their purchases. They are seeking out products that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also aligned with their values.”

Pajama Pantry’s Zero Waste Patchwork Slippers, among the shortlisted products, is an example of this in action, redesigning the traditional garment-making model to cut waste completely out of its processes, while the application of an artisan twist to its collection could just be the cherry on top of what has the potential to be a new blueprint for ethical and sustainable fashion. Doing exactly what they say on the tin, the slippers are made entirely from the fabric offcuts and scraps reclaimed from the production process behind Pajama Pantry’s regular clothing collection – a range that itself has a uniquely sustainable story woven into its very fabric. It begins with the textiles that company founder, Alice Meynell, sources from her trusted supplier in Jaipur. Hand painted on natural cottons, using predominantly vegetable dyes, Pajama Pantry deals exclusively with end of roll and deadstock textiles. As part of the company’s approach to keep its environmental impact to a minimum, Alice ensures she purchases “a maximum of 30 metres” of each fabric, never taking more than she needs. When the clothing they produce is shipped from Bangalore to the UK, it is packaged with “every last piece” of waste material to be used “in the most inventive ways imaginable.” In this instance, it is in the production of a collection of Zero Waste Patchwork Slippers, all hand-stitched by the company’s second sewing team in Scotland. It is in the discovery of gems like this that both Spring Fair and the annual Gift of the Year Awards ought to be celebrated.
