WELCOME...

...to Progressive Gifts & Home’s special Spring/Summer home fragrancing publication, Guide To Home Fragrance, which tells you everything you need to know about the home fragrancing sector and then some!

Welcome to Progressive Gifts & Home’s third Spring 2024 Guide To Home Fragrance supplement which gives a true insight into the many strands that encapsulate a sector that is continuing to go from strength to strength.

For the second consecutive year, we asked retailers to tell us how the sector fared last year: what they look for when they’re sourcing product, what their customers are looking for, and what they like to fragrance their own homes with. To read the findings of this unique Guide To Home Fragrance survey, turn to pages 9-11.

Few would disagree that one of the biggest trends this year is vessels, with home fragrance suppliers putting an emphasis on ensuring that they make a style statement in the home, with vibrant, summery colours a focus. Plus, size matters too, with Lesser & Pavey fanfaring the success of their 1 litre diffuser vessels. On the fragrance front, the buzzword seems to be oud, alongside refreshing citrus scents, as well as summery florals and fruity fragrances, all of which will be helping to bring the scents of the season into the home.

In addition, showing no signs of abating is the emphasis on mental health, and ways to help people to relax, re-energise, sleep better and improve their mood, with suppliers reporting that wellbeing continues to be a growth sector. To find out more about what’s trending, turn to pages 15-17.

We also caught up with James Mountfield, sales director at Designworks Collective, to discover more about American candle and home fragrance brand Paddywax, where repurposing is in the company’s DNA. The vessels, often already repurposed, can be re-used again and again in the home after the candle has stopped burning, re-emerging as, for example, cocktail glasses, bowls and even a self-watering planter! Turn to pages 12-13 to read about the company’s brand new launches this year.

But first, turn to pages 5-7 for all the latest, home fragrancing industry news and views.

Enjoy reading!

The National Gallery x Marmalade Masterpiece Collection

Iconic Paintings Reimagined As Fragrance

Among the finalists in the Gift of the Year 2024 competition’s Heritage category is Marmalade of London’s exclusive collaboration with The National Gallery.

The National Gallery x Marmalade Masterpiece Collection has reimagined iconic paintings as fragrance, with the collection available in candle and diffuser formats from the end of March.

The company is the first home fragrance brand to collaborate with The National Gallery, with the collection featuring four uniquely blended candles that bring masterpieces - including Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Monet’s Water Lily Pond - to life by lighting them from within.

“Each flicker reveals a new brushstroke or a hidden detail, while blended aromas add a multi-sensory dimension to the experience,” explains Marmalade’s managing director Piers Flook.

A second licensing partnership for the company is the new Emily Smith x Marmalade of London collection, featuring vibrant colours and playful scents, with Marmalade matching Emily’s bold colours, whimsical motifs and energy with a specially blended range of naturally scented candles and diffusers. The collection features four of her iconic designs and will be available from March.

“We are excited to unveil our new collections and are proud that The National Gallery and Emily Smith have both chosen us to work with them on these exclusive ranges,” states Piers.

Tying in second place are price point and fragrance. Made in Britain was also shown to be a driver for 41% of those surveyed, with over a third (35%) looking for product that is ethical/sustainable (a drop from 64% last year).

DO YOU CURRENTLY STOCK, AND ARE YOU CONSIDERING EXPANDING YOUR SUPPLIERS THIS YEAR?

On average, the majority of retailers surveyed reported that they stock between three and five different home fragrance brands, going up to nine or ten for more specialist fragrance gift shops. The majority of respondents said that they were pleased with the brands that they offer.

DO YOU USE TESTERS INTO YOUR SHOP TO ENCOURAGE CUSTOMERS TO ‘TRY BEFORE THEY BUY’?

All responders confirmed that that they offered customers testers in store, allowing them to smell the fragrances before purchasing.

DO YOUR CUSTOMERS MOSTLY BUY HOME FRAGRANCING AS A GIFT, A SELF-PURCHASE OR BOTH?

Creating a double sale for gift shops, the findings of this year’s survey revealed that there’s been a big jump in people not only treating a friend to a home fragrancing product as a gift, but also purchasing something for themselves.

WHAT’S TRENDING AT THE MOMENT?

As with last year’s survey, wellness, relaxation and mood enhancing home fragrances continue to be the biggest sellers according to almost two thirds of respondents (65%) – slightly up on last year, with just under a fifth (18%) highlighting seasonal fragrances.

American brand Paddywax started “burnin’ wicks in ‘96”, founded on the same principles that the company upholds today – daring to be different, and bringing fun and innovation to the candle and home fragrancing sector. All products are designed to be repurposed, living on in the home as everything from a cocktail glass to a self-watering planter!

Part of Designworks Collective since 2021, Guide To Home Fragrance put sales director James Mountfield into the hot seat to find out more.

DARING TO BE DIFFERENT

Designworks Collective is a vibrant assortment of consumer brands, privately owned by ceo Joe Moore, with its HQ in Nashville, Tennessee. “We are makers and curators of premium gifts, home fragrance, stationery, grooming/personal care and coffee,” explains sales director James Mountfield who is based in Bath, the company’s UK office.

several key senior managers and directors from Wild & Wolf, to include James Mountfield, now the company’s sales director for the UK and Ireland.

(Other offices are based in The Hague and Melbourne).

Focusing on Paddywax, James emphasises a unique concept of crafting premium quality, natural, vegan-friendly, clean-burning soy wax candles that are designed to be repurposed and live on in the home long after burning.

Paddywax, developed by teams in Nashville, was acquired by Joe in 2011, where the brand was available internationally through distributors. However, four years ago, Joe seized an opportunity to acquire Wild & Wolf’s flagship Gentlemen’s Hardware brand as a strategic driver to change the business model, internationalise the business, and establish a direct presence and infrastructure in the UK, Europe and Australia, taking with him

“Sustainability is in Paddywax’s DNA, and has been for over 25 years,”

James explains. “Every candle starts with a story, which the brand’s teams in Nashville build around to create collections that add warmth and nostalgia to the home. All feature a mix of materials, textures and shapes as well as unique fragrances and designs, positioned as a unique juxtaposition to design ‘more than just another glass jar candle’. The vessels can be repurposed to be used again and again as coffee cups, cocktail glasses, serving dishes, dipping bowls, vases, storage – even a self-watering planter! “We have ceramic

l Designworks’ portfolio of brands includes Designworks Ink, Paddywax and Gentlemen’s Hardware, alongside Paddywax Candle Bar retail outlets, Barrel & Oak personal care and Good Citizen coffee.

vessels that you can drink out of, bowls you can eat from, and everything is, of course, tested very specifically. Importantly, a vessel may well have been something else before it was repurposed by Paddywax,” adds James.

So, what’s brand new from Paddywax for 2024? “Earlier this year we launched A Dopo, which is inspired by the Mediterranean,” he highlights. “It features quirky, colourful, hand painted ceramic vessels, hand-poured with soy wax, that include two of Paddywax’s best selling fine fragrances, Lush Palms and Cactus Flower. There is nothing like it in the current candle market, with the collection selling out in under four weeks, and Spring/Summer already proving to be a season like no other,” James underlines.

Paddywax has also followed on from the phenomenal success of its Cowboy Boot match holders with the launch of a quintessentially British version for Spring/Summer in the shape of ceramic wellington boots which come with 25 safety matches and a striker on the sole. “They’re proving to be another incredible best seller,” enthuses James.

Plus, Paddywax’s ceramic incense houses have proved such a huge success for Christmas over the past few years that the company has developed and launched a range of collectable incense houses that come with 20 incense cones and a tealight. New options for Spring/Summer include an Amsterdam townhouse, Nordic A Frame, Sante Fe Adobe and, of course, an English cottage.

And with tablescaping still a strong trend, the brand’s Insta-ready glass taper holders and taper candles have been making a tabletop statement. “It’s a really easy way to refresh colour without the investment in new linen,” James points out. “We’ve extended the range of colours we offer in our taper candles and are developing new innovative ceramic holders for 2025. Additionally, Paddywax does especially well in Autumn/Winter with its collection of

Paddywax Candle Bars Expand

shaped ceramic and wax trees that are particularly good for seasonal/Christmas tablescaping.”

With a continuing cost of living crisis, and the uncertainty around a General Election, how is James feeling about the rest of this year? “So far, it’s been a very strong start, particularly for Paddywax, with the success of A Dopo and matches - unlike anything I have known in the last five years in terms of product launch and performance.

“But aside from these hero lines, business is generally very good, thanks to our growing network of independent retailers which are at the core of our business and our lifeblood. We are therefore doing everything we can to support the business and work together with our customers. There’s always uncertainty, but we believe this is a time for us to grow together. As long as we continue to invest in innovative new product and stock, I believe we have all the ingredients we need for success.”

Building on the success of the first Paddywax Candle Bar retail outlet, which opened in Bath in August 2022, Designworks Collective is opening a second, flagship branch in Edinburgh this April which will be a much larger space than Bath, and includes a repour station as well as fragrance discovery section.

“Our retail concept is typical of Paddywax,” comments James. “it’s something different, an experience, somewhere where friends can meet up to make a candle that’s unique to them, enjoy a drink and shop. This has been really popular in Bath and we’re excited to launch in Edinburgh and The Hague. It gives customers an opportunity to make an easy ‘waste less’ decision, recycle their candle vessel and enjoy it all over again. Plus, Candle Bar consumers can return any Paddywax candle to us for a repour.”

Offering one hour workshops, customers choose their own vessel and their own fragrance, and then create their own candle. “It’s a great way for us to communicate our brand values to consumers, and it doesn’t compete or conflict with our core wholesale business and our independent customers as we also use this as space to host our national account and independent retailers to educate them about what we do.”

He emphasises that the concept has worked really well in Bath, even in the traditionally quieter periods of the retail calendar. “We’ve constantly been busy, and year-to-day our workshop bookings have doubled compared to last year. In February alone, we held over 1,000 workshops.”

According to home fragrance suppliers, one of the most popular fragrances this summer is going to be oud, which features in many of the new collections that will be rolling out from March.

So what else is going to be trending fragrance-wise, and also making a style statement in people’s homes over the coming months?

SCENTS OF THE SEASON

Leaving wintery, festive scents behind, Spring/Summer is the season when floral, fruity and citrus-y fragrances come to the fore, with colour all to play for, and statement vessels reflecting the trends and the summer vibe.

“Fragrances, colours and vessels all play a pivotal role in shaping the ambience of living spaces, offering a fresh perspective on home decor and lifestyle,” says Kate Winch, marketing director at Candlelight. “For Spring/Summer, we’re seeing a surge in demand for refreshing, invigorating scents that evoke the essence of the season. They range from zesty citrus notes to lush floral bouquets, with fragrances that capture the vitality of nature dominating the scene. They awaken the senses and infuse spaces with energy and warmth.”

Kate highlights that bright, vibrant hues are taking centre stage, infusing spaces with joy and optimism. “From sunny yellows to lush greens and tropical blues, the palette of Spring/Summer is alive with colour,” she emphasises, which can be seen in the company’s Two Tone Brights collection. “It boasts a riot of hues that celebrate the vibrancy of the season along with fruity aromas.”

brand new vessel design, with decorative glass containers revealing an ombre effect. There are four new fragrances to include Midnight Rose & Oud.

“A key fragrance trend in the collection is that of beautiful summer garden florals and botanicals,” says managing director Vanessa Curry.

As she points out, vessels have become not just containers for fragrances but statements of style and sophistication. “Our Spring/Summer ranges feature vessels that are as visually striking as they are functional, adding a touch of glamour to the home.”

A highlight of Best Kept Secrets’ upcoming Spring/Summer 2024 collections is the launch of Luminescence featuring a

“Scents such as patchouli, for example, is reminiscent of a summer woodland walk. Plus, for us, a significant trend in the gifting landscape is the demand for quality products priced at under £10, where we have seen a surge in sales of our reed diffusers, particularly in our Just Because range.”

Also fanfaring oud this Spring is Marmalade, with Oud & Black Cherry joining the Marmalade core home range, where it’s available in glass and tin candle formats, alongside a luxury large diffuser.

“This season we’re focusing on fresh and botanical fragrances,” confirms Freckleface’s managing director Tara Carlile-Swift. “Our true-to-life scents, such as Wild Meadow, Lemon, Thyme & Lettuce, Earl Grey & Cucumber, and English Rose & Raspberry, have all come into play since early Spring, with our RHS Heritage Citrus Burst fragrance very much oozing all things summer.”

Epitomising the summer months, Shifa Aromas new Butterfly House reed diffuser collection launches at the end of April, inspired by the beauty of British butterflies. “It’s been created with premium perfume grade oils that are both long-lasting and aromatic,” says

Also putting a focus on citrus fragrances is FYG. “Following the musks and woods, as well as the awful weather this year, our citrus and fruity fragrances have started with a bang,” confirms founder and managing director Demi Pendakis.

“Looking ahead, we’ll be offering Autumn-themed candles and fragrances, with seasonal graphics – mushrooms and pumpkins - featuring on our boxed candles with fragrances that will be warm and rich with cinnamon notes,” confirms director Piers Croke.

At Henry & Co, creative director Jo Ashton has been developing new fragrances to add newness into the brand’s

Stay Well, Feel Good

Since the pandemic, wellbeing has been a mainstay of the home fragrancing marketplace. Continuing to see growth in the sector is Enesco, with trade marketing manager Aylish Ellwood predicting that the trend will continue to go from strength to strength over the next 12 months. “Relaxing fragrances, which evoke a feeling of calm, and products which are natural and simple, are all part of our Eau Lovely collection,” she highlights.

“With gifting in mind, and a continued and growing appetite for mindfulness and wellbeing in the candle and home fragrance sector, our You’re Lovely collection, launched this Spring, offers relation titles with sentiment to spread the word of self-care to those close to you,” says Cotton & Grey’s co-founder Claire Sowden.

Ashleigh & Burwood meanwhile, will be launching a new Wellbeing range this September, available in four key fragrances which cover the key wellbeing areas of relax, sleep, re-fresh and breathe. They include 120ml reed diffusers, scented candles, essential oils, ultrasonic diffuser, room sprays, a fragrance lamp and lamp fragrances.

Comments Ashleigh & Burwood’s ceo Jed Kenrick: “Wellbeing is a key growth area and we believe there is a space in the market for a high-quality brand that is both premium and offers a strong value for money proposition. We are delighted with how the range has been received by our retail partners.”

Fragrances include Gatekeeper (Jasmine, Melon & Musk), Painted Lady (English Pear, Lily & Amber) and Brimstone (Bergamot, Rose & Orange Blossom). “Products are made in Sheffield, and we use ecofriendly ingredients utilising natural plant-based diffuser solutions, packaged in recyclable materials,” adds Jabar, with the company also donating a percentage of its profits annually to KORT (Kashmir Orphans Relief Trust).

At CAHM, fresh fragrances will be taking centre stage this Spring, to include a re-launch of the company’s Wood Sage & Sea Salt which is available in previously un-released formats, including the best-selling bunny tail luxury reed diffusers. "We have multiple new product launches this year that have been much-requested, including fragrance oils and wax melts,” says founder Amy Hogarth. candles and diffusers has a distinctive black ombre look. “It provides a clear point of difference in the market,” says the company’s UK commercial director Ben Parkhouse. “We believe that the consumer is looking for something a little different, with the black vessels giving our customers something different to display.”

“Colour trends for Spring/Summer 2024 are an eclectic mix of vivid brights with rich nature-based tones stretching the consumer’s imagination as they transition from Spring into summer,” says Enesco’s trade marketing manager Aylish Ellwood. “Fragrance from across our Spring/Summer 2024 launch, such as aloe and agave, and bergamot and eucalyptus, have been created in line with the trend to include launches from Herb Dublin, Irish Botanicals, Yankee Candle and WoodWick.”

By contrast, Ashleigh & Burwood’s recently launched Signature range of

Watercolour artist Meg Hawkins has also launched a Signature Collection, offering a sensory journey through fragrance, story and design, with the packaging for each fragrance featuring Meg's artwork. "It’s a celebration of the intricate stories woven into the fabric of our natural surroundings," explains Meg. "I want to transport individuals to different landscapes, allowing them to experience the magic of nature through their senses."

Fragrance-wise, with men in mind - but with appeal to women too - scents are stronger reflecting aftershaves. “There are spicier, woody scents coming through, found in Tobacco & Rum, Tuscan Leather, Oud & Bergamot, Amber & Sandalwood,” Julian points out, with softer scents including fresher fragrances such as Oud & Sandalwood, Pomegranate & Peony, Rose & Bergamot and Cocoa & Cashmere.

With summer on its way, and people wanting to bring the scents of the season into their homes, both retailers and their customers are going to be spoilt for choice, not only with fragrance, but also with the vessels themselves.

With diffusers becoming statement items in home décor, Lesser & Pavey says the bigger the better. “We tested the market with our 1 litre diffusers at Autumn Fair, followed by the main launch at Spring Fair, and received a fantastic response,” says managing director Julian Hunt. “They come in attractive packaging and are priced to be appealing.”

Henry & Co. revealed a brand-new home fragrance concept which moves on its wax melt offering a step further with the brand’s successful artisan range, with a new Melt Bar. Its fun, aesthetic appeal and gift worthy packaging made the Artisan Wax Melt Bar a big hit at Spring Fair 2024.
